Tropical Vibrations at Menlo Summerfest – Festival Ups the Ante Bigtime on the Music Saturday After-Hours Concert Returns! Petty Theft Headlines the Cool Down Concert, 5-7 p.m.
L
ive music fans will be pumped up to hear that festival organizers are making a major statement and turning up the heat in a big way with Tropical Vibrations, the vastly improved musical showcase for the all-new Menlo Summerfest, coming up July 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park. “Musically, this year is a quantum leap in quality with the return of the popular Saturday After-Hours Cool Down Concert, our significantly upgraded Soundwaves Stage in Fremont Park plus we added a second stage, the Aloha Stage at El Camino,” says festival entertainment director Steve Bajor of Team Pro Event. “The festival is all about tropical summer fun. We have a nice flow of tropical sounds from surf music to hot rod music to big band. Also, we have the real deal Cuban band with the great Fito Reinoso; his salsa is absolutely off the hook.” Tapping into the festive, tropical sound, the Aloha Stage will showcase several island-inspired entertainers. “We’ll put our steel drums and surf band there, as well as ukulele entertainment and Polynesian dancers. We’re making it fresh and exciting,” Bajor said.
SOUNDWAVES STAGE IN FREMONT PARK Pacific Soul Band, a 10-piece powerhouse of talent, will rock you to the core with funk, old school rock, pop, Top 40 tunes. Members of this San Francisco family band have played with Earth, Wind & Fire and Sheila E. Saturday’s Summerfest Cool Down Concert is back, this year featuring Petty Theft, the Bay Area’s premiere Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers cover band. The Cool Down Concert runs from 5-7 p.m. Press your zoot suit and shine up your swing dancing shoes for Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88s. They bringing the swinging little big bands of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s to life. Pankind’s lyrical steel drum music will transport you to a paradise where you’ll imagine your toes in the sand and an umbrella drink in your hand. The Houserockers, a 10-piece rock & soul band from Los Gatos, will close out the show with two solid hours of high energy rock. This band was named “Best Cover Band in the Bay Area” by KFOX Radio’s Last Band Standing contest. From urban Havana grooves to timba, Cuban-born Felix “Fito” Reinoso and his 7-piece band set the perfect mood for this summertime celebration. Fito’s beautiful voice has been compared to the late and beloved Beny More. Nothing says summer like the infectious twangy tones of surf music. Brought to you by the Reefriders from Pacifica, you’ll have a blast and grooving to Pipeline,

Mobile Eats at Menlo Summerfest
F
Hot Fun in the Summertime
or some delicious street fare and some world-class summer fun, head out to Mobile Eats, the fabulous food feature of the all-new Menlo Summerfest. Bring a hearty appetite and enjoy from an array of fresh, festive, summery food, much rooted in tropical, warm-weather destinations to celebrate the festival’s fun in the sun, summer-vacation theme. Fresh Catch, a food truck, brings the best of traditional Hawaiian poke by using the freshest high-quality ingredients from around the world. Grab a bowl of fresh poke served over rice or salad accompanied with a flavorful seaweed salad then choose a flavor: The Californian – Shoyu flavored poke topped with onions and avocado, Too Hot to Handle – Spicy Ahi flavored poke top with tobiko and green onions, and The Pomeranian Ponzu flavored poke. Delicious and nutritious! Real Cool Frozen Treats, from Sonoma County, makes all-natural frozen dessert novelties (ice pops and ice cream sandwiches) using local, organic, and fair-trade fruits, vegetables, herbs and flavoring ingredients. Sorry, no coconut or pineapple pops from Real Cool!
Instead you’ll get unique flavors like: Snickerdoodle-Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwiches, Blueberry Cheesecake pops, Cucumber-Lime Cooler pops, Peaches & Cream pops and the Strawberry Refresher (a cooling blend of organic strawberries, lime juice and Thai basil). In the foothills of the Mexican Sierra Madre, the city of Oaxaca is known for its rich moles, made from a complex blend of peppers, seeds, spices and a multitude of savory ingredients. Oaxaca Kitchen Mobile, a popular food truck often seen at Stanford, will feature its signature mole negro blanketed over chicken tamales and drizzled atop Oaxacan nachos. The extensive menu also includes burritos, tacos and a Wa-ha-ka bowl with organic veggies, rice, beans, guacamole, queso fresco and salsa. Mexican fare will also be prepared by family-run Carmen’s Taqueria of Salinas, offering carne asada and veggie tacos and burritos as well as super nachos with meat and beans. They’ll also prepare the traditional summertime treat found on practically every street corner in Mexico— colorful fruit cups with watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, and jicama—as
well as juicy mango-on-a-stick. A taste of Thailand can be found at Thai Stick, where the ever-popular barbecue chicken comes on a stick, in a bowl or a wrap, or over noodles. Sonoma Teriyaki also delivers Asian flavors with a hearty teriyaki chicken veggie chow mein, as well as a nod to the most prolific of summer vegetables with deep-fried zucchini. Aroma Concessions celebrates the season with decadent barbecued oysters, sandwiches stuffed with Portobello mushrooms or succulent tri-tip, giant turkey legs, hot dogs, and garlic fries. B Food International brings the Middle East and Mediterranean to Menlo with falafel and gyros, plus sausages, Philly cheese steaks, and hot dogs. Succulent seafood is on the menu at Gourmet Faire, with a choice of tender calamari or crab fries, along with garlic fries and corndogs. Sausage Kingpin Mike Hutslar’s smoked pork and beef sausages come in at a hefty half-pound, made even heftier when topped with grilled onions and sauerkraut. His curly fries and fried zucchini make tasty accompaniments. Old-time American goodies can be found at Ear-Good Corn Roast, where
freshly roasted corn awaits with melted butter and baked potatoes come with all the toppings. And Suitcase Ron returns with his addictively sweet-salty kettle corn, a perfect primer for Barrett’s Lemonade. Kids will be eager to check out Mariah’s Fair Treats’ bright yellow ice cream truck. Not your typical ice cream, her peppercorn-sized Dippin’ Dots are chilled to a super-freezing -40 degrees to maintain their tiny bead shapes while spooned out of a bowl. She offers cookies and cream, rainbow ice, mint chip, banana split, and cookie dough. Sugar and Ice and All Things Nice will make a visual splash with its tall oval trailer wrapped in blue glass. Here Hawaiian shave ice and cotton candy are what it’s all about. Customers take their plain shave ice to a flavor station and mix and match flavors. Favorites include cherry, tiger’s blood (berries and coconut), mango, French vanilla and piña colada. Another opportunity for self-serve shave ice will come from the folks with the cheerful Kona Ice truck. Their Flavorwave dispenser has every imaginable option, from grape and strawberry to watermelon, pineapple and mango, with an added infusion of vitamins C and D.

Artsplash Debuts at Menlo Summerfest A Nirvana For Shoppers, Fun in the Sun
merica’s finest artists and craftmakers transform Menlo Park’s downtown into a spectacular visual feast for Artsplash, the fine arts component of the Menlo Summerfest. Shop and browse among more than 200 booths filled with on-trend fashions, dazzling jewelry, exceptional paintings, functional ceramics, shimmering glass vessels, leather goods, beautiful photography, wood carvings, mixed media creations and much more.
Fine Art Alain Fastre has been able to combine his passion for painting with a successful international business career. He has worked in 29 different countries and enjoys painting the iconic places that have left indelible memories in his mind. The artist recently started painting with oils and acrylics, but he prefers
Rebecca Nie painting “Poppy”
watercolors. Contemporary painter Rebecca Nie creates a Zen dialogue between the artist and viewer through visual beauty. She strives to express the Eastern ideal of harmony with nature and humanity through layers of symbolism. Her abstract realism paintings illustrate poppies, magnolias and other natural wonders. Photographer Eric Lusignan used to work for the family of Ansel Adams. Today, he scours national parks in the United States and Canada to shoot interesting subjects. Paula Riley paints from the heart. Inspired by the Impressionist painters, she uses a palette knife to depict interesting objects and landscapes.
Sculpture and Mixed Media Nobe Babayan’s bronze sculptures are deeply sensitive and imaginative. His work is spiritual and thought-provoking, and it has been displayed in exhibitions throughout Europe. Contemporary artist Stuart Ratcliff’s pencil, charcoal and pen drawings capture life’s magical moments. From eerie moonlit evenings to spindly tree branches swaying in a summer breeze, his work is unusual and mysterious. Deborah and Casey Bridges are a mother and son team. They carve ceramic sculptures and stone garden art, inspired by deities of the East and ancient sculptures from temple carvings. Erik Nelson uses recycled paint, shellac, studio debris, found objects and other
raw materials to create incredible works of art. He scrapes, burns and sands his surfaces to create textures and contemporary designs.
Functional Art
What’s your favorite city? Jack Charney designs dinnerware depicting his contemporary vision of New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, Seattle and (our favorite!) San Francisco. His ceramic designs will add an exciting pop of color to any kitchen. According to glassblower Robert Kahl, “Manipulating glass is like playing a game of chess. Each move must be thought out well in advance in order to achieve masterful execution.” It’s no wonder that his sparkling glass vases, paperweights, garden art and jewelry are so popular. Calling all cat lovers: John Conroy says he doodles, creates art and moves 24/7. His customers are delighted by his amusing greeting cards and stationery, pillows, tote bags and giclée canvas wraps. Michael Dickinson’s shimmering glass champagne flutes, wine stoppers and desk sculptures are inspired by classic and timeless art found in Northern California plants and an ever-changing society.
Wearable Art
Connie Gunderson designs highquality handbags and creates her own patterns. The handbags are constructed from upholstery-grade fabrics. Connie also makes gorgeous brooches from ribbon, yarn, feathers and fabric. Inspired by the Northern California coast, Nancy Wilder is a painter and felter who enjoys exploring various textures and luminous colors. She layers fine strands of colored wool fiber on ethereal, sheer silk to make soft scarves, ponchos and accessories. Lorna Ritter remembers spending hours on her mother’s Singer Featherweight sewing machine. Today, 35 years later, she sews beautiful hand-painted clothing and accessories. Her whimsical line includes jackets, dresses, vests, handbags and jewelry. After traveling the world for five years, Hester Van Diggelen became an accomplished jeweler. She works primarily with sterling silver but also incorporates gems, felt, enamel and gold into her pendants, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. sunny Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. With amazing skill and good humor, this talented band of artists excels at quickly rendering guests with one-of-a-kind, keepsake caricature art. Have some fun with a temporary tattoo by California’s award-winning henna artist Renu Lal. Henna painting is an ancient, all-natural, pain-free cosmetic and healing art. Dried leaves from the henna plant are crushed into a powder, then made into a paste that is applied to the body to safely dye the skin. This is done in elaborate patterns and designs, traditionally on hands and feet. The henna dyes the skin with a maroon stain which lasts 1-2 weeks and fades away leaving no visible marks. From the sweetest of looks to more daring designs, “It’s Fun Face Painting” brings an extra sparkle to the event! Face painting and body art, fun henna designs, glitter tattoos and hair bling are among their unique wearable art offerings. Want something that lasts a little longer? Enhance your tresses with colorful hair feathers that will stay the course or a nontraditional festival henna tattoo design. Learn the art and feel the joy of hula hooping! Experienced hoop dance performer Helga Holoubek will be providing a fun-filled hula hooping experience with performances, demos and activities. Come join us ... hula hooping fun for everyone!
