2 X Palo Alto Festival of the Arts X 2016
A сne art celebration
on University Avenue
T
his vibrant city will show off its artful side when the renowned Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, nestled along tree-lined University Avenue, will return to the downtown area to celebrate its 35th anniversary August 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p. m. Hosted by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce and its Presenting sponsor: the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, they invite you to join in all the festivities. Festival-goers and art collectors will enjoy this multi-faceted arts celebration featuring 300 high quality artists from all over the United States. Artists will be showcasing unique and many one-of-a-kind works of art from stunning bronze sculptures to elegant contemporary hand-crafted home furnishings to whimsical ceramic garden totems. Two-dimensional paintings and mixed media artwork will amaze the public by the variety of styles, use of colors and the exploration of subject matter. According to a local patron of the arts, “This festival consistently has had the highest percentage of fine artists that I’ve seen at any of the festivals I’ve been to; and I go to a lot of festivals on the peninsula and the South Bay.” To compliment the exceptional art seen along University Avenue will be the Italian Street Painting
Expo on Tasso. Here festival-goers will view 60 artists creating impressive pastel chalk paintings on the hot pavement, some as large as 144 square feet. And, for budding young Picassos, visit the Chalk-A-Lot area where every child has an opportunity to create their own masterpiece sideby-side with the professionals. At the corner of Kipling and University, the Kids’ Art Studio will be offering free art activities so children can take home their own creations as a festival memento. The plaza at Cowper and University this year will feature a new festival component titled “Chopin & Chandeliers”. A colorful array of contestants’ chandelier entries will surround the festival’s “Play Me a Tune” piano….a chance for anyone wandering by to stop, settle, and let your inner Chopin take over. The larger-than-life chandeliers, inspired by Dale Chihuly’s amazing glass chandelier installations, were created by festival contestants who were restricted to using recycled plastic bottles as the basis. This creative and unique art sculpture contest is part of the festival’s effort to unite art with cleaning up the environment. Also new this year is the Joseph George Napa Valley Wine booth located at the Bryant Street intersection. Wine connoisseurs can enjoy a selection of hand-picked premium California wines and unique varietals while listening to the stories told by Bert George, this year’s guest sommelier and owner of Joseph George Fine Wines of San Jose. Featured wines will be: Joseph George Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Rombauer Chardonnay 2014, Kennedy Lateral 2012, Duckhorn Merlot 2012, Goldeneye Pinot Noir 2013, and Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet 2012 Continuous entertainment at the Waverley & Webster stages will showcase exciting new performances featuring folk, country, acoustic rock, rhythm & blues, dueling pianos, high energy Latin fusion and toe-tappin’ Cajun sounds. Alluring music from each street corner concert musician will also
captivate and entertain you as you roam throughout the festival. And, back by popular demand, The Great Morgani, accordionist and costume-designer extraordinaire, will be performing twice daily at the Cowper intersection. Definitely a live performing work of art. Public transit and free parking make visiting this fine art festival easy, convenient and worth a day’s visit. Free admission. And, for everyone’s safety, please leave pets at home. For public transit information: www.511.org. Call (650) 324-3121 or visit www.mlaproductions. com for more information.

Chopin and Chandeliers
T
hese are not your typical chandeliers as seen in many homes or lavish atriums. Instead, these decorative chandeliers are better known as the art of up-cycling. The process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. Now add a street piano for attendees to play and you have “Chopin and Chandeliers”…an inviting outlet for festival virtuosos or free styling performers to participate at will.
A perfect blend of fine art meets fine wines at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts.
Together, these modern unique sculptures inspired by and resembling famous glass chandeliers created by renowned artist Dale Chihuly are crafted from recycled plastic bottles to form an artistic sculptural display. The performing artists compliment the visual aspect and evoke a spontaneous interaction of the senses as fingers glide across the keyboard surrounded by a graceful dance of color.
For more information on these fine wines visit Joseph George Fine Wines.
Stop by “Chopin and Chandeliers” at Cowper Street plaza to see, to hear and to perform.
Joseph George is a 3rd generation family company that has been in the business of distributing wine for 75 years. Their premier wine shop is located in San Jose.

painting created from Jim DeWitt can simply be described as “capturing excitement”. Rich vivid colors draw you into a wonderment filled with joy and expressed through a contemporary abstract style. DeWitt’s passion of art and sailing started at 5-years old when he saw his father building a sailboat and dreamed about someday becoming her skipper. Years later dreams came true and he became a renowned artist, sailor and nautical innovator; not to mention, he himself was a sailing champion on the San Francisco Bay and aboard. Born in Oakland he now lives in Point Richmond with his wife and their dog. Even though he is no longer out on the water, DeWitt is happiest painting colorful, joyful subject matters that tells a story. His artist statement says it all: “He hopes you enjoy his artwork as much as he enjoys creating it.”

The hot spot in Oakland
T
he oldest running glass blowing studio in Oakland, Pizzichillo-Gordon Glass Studio was established in 1984, where the artists reside today. Bruce Pizzichillo and Dari Gordon are internationally known artists who create large, colorful hand-blown glass vases, sculptural vessels and bowls as well as intriguing glass and mixed media sculptures. “We want to create art that will bring beauty and joy into people’s lives. We work with a process we created years ago of creating a drawing made of pieces of glass, and, during the blowing process, encasing it between layers of clear glass as we blow the vessel; a technique requiring great precision. We make one piece at a time. We strive to create a visual balance with each form; its transparency, its color and its imagery,” says Gordon.
This process alone can take a week or more to complete. Then additional paint applications are applied to the intricate glass design, many with circle imagery and mosaic techniques. “As an artist, I like the contrast of the vibrant technologically-based effect of dichroic glass in relation to the very earthy tones of the acrylic paint. It represents our current place in the history of the earth where we are striving to find a balance between technology and conservation,” says Hausserman. Harmony and balance Self-described as “once a competitive snowboard half-pipe athlete with artistic tendencies”, Christine Hausserman’s artistic journey began by making dichroic glass jewelry. This later evolved into a mixed-media glass and acrylic artist. In her studio in San Diego, she begins with specialized dichroic glass which she cuts to shape

Born in Japan, Eri Sugimoto learned the art of hand-building pottery as she worked as an industrial designer. Now living in Orange County, she concentrates on wheel throwing techniques where she creates these uniquely made art pieces with an Asian influence. “The techniques of asymmetry and dynamic composition in my work may have been influenced by her experience studying Japanese Middle Ages art on folding screens, ink paintings, sliding screen paintings, and illustrated scrolls in her early days as an art history student,” she writes in her artist statement.
“My inspiration for these abstract designs come either from forms in nature or have a geometric basis. I am currently using a new technique that combines cloisonné and champlevé. This method allows for a more streamlined piece compared to the traditional method of making a separate setting for the cloisonné piece that is set after all fabrication is completed”, says Tai. Be sure to visit her booth to view these one-of-akind and limited production art pieces. Visit annataienamels.com to view more exciting work.
“Most of my works are functional things for daily use like tableware pieces and vases. I hope that each piece will become one of the joyful elements in someone’s life,” says Sugimoto. Visit her website at www.erisugimoto.com to view more work.
A fascination of insects
A
former architect, Jennifer Ivory, now full-time bug enthusiast creates very realistic bug collages from her home in Corvallis, OR. In fact, you may find a disclaimer that no insects were harmed in the making of the artwork on her web site and display. Each perfectly sculpted insect is created using archival paper, illustration ink, transparency film and acrylic paint.

nique, one-of-a-kind, handmade cloisonné enameled jewelry, may have started as a hobby for Anna Tai, only to become a career years later. Majoring in physics at Harvard University, Tai received her BA, MA, and PH.D. Had a successful career at Intel and after having her twins, she did not return to the tech world but instead moved into the world of enamel. She now resides in Menlo Park where she designs and creates her abstract jewelry.
“I want my artwork to positively influence people to respect insects and perhaps even contemplate the dependency we humans have upon them. I usually end art show conversations with friendly encouragement to “go plant some milkweed” or similar insect habitat pro-activeness in hopes that the people who have admired my work will take away an increased sense of responsibility toward the tiny creatures living in their backyards,” says Ivory. Even for those that get goosebumps when talking about bugs will enjoy this display. For more information, visit www.insectworks.com. 2016 X Palo Alto Festival of the Arts X 21
