“My husband and I line the bucket with newspaper, then layer food scraps with used paper napkins to keep it neat.” — Grace G.

“We bought our own stainless steel container with a filter and line it with compostable bags.” — Elizabeth G.

WELCOME TO INFO PALO ALTO Since its founding more than 100 years ago, Palo Alto has played a pivotal role in the arts, education, politics, technology and science, becoming the address of choice for dozens of Nobel Prize winners, tech visionaries, leaders of major arts movements and even a U.S. president. In recent months, it has evolved into ground zero for innovation in the automobile industry, become a home to a blue-chip gallery with museum-quality art shows and has nearly completed a newly expanded state-of-the-art children’s hospital that will be the largest in terms of children’s hospital operating rooms in Northern California. This tight-knit community’s ongoing entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and zest for pushing beyond the established boundaries have made the city not only a great place to call home, but a recognized leader that other communities strive to mimic worldwide. Our annual Info Palo Alto publication aims to make it easier for residents to maintain this spirit of collaboration by capturing key resources and data needed to connect with neighborhood leaders, participate in the community and create positive change. Within its pages you will find information about the community from how to contact the mayor to where to find advocates for seniors and those in need. Our education section offers comparative information on public and private schools. The outdoors chapter maps out where you can swim, skateboard and play tennis. The government chapter provides information on the boards and commissions that guide the city. In addition to Info Palo Alto, you can visit PaloAltoOnline.com to stay up to date on Palo Alto news. Subscribe to Express, an email sent every weekday with news delivered right to your inbox. Or check out Weekend Express, emailed on Thursday, for the scoop on arts and entertainment. Both are free: sign up at PaloAltoOnline.com/express. If you have a suggestion for next year’s Info, please email editor@paweekly.com. We appreciate your feedback. Rodin reinstallation celebrates artist 100 years after his death

T

his fall, the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University will unveil the reinstallation of its collection of sculptures by Auguste Rodin to mark the centenary of the French artist’s death. The center’s internationally recognized collection includes more than 200 works executed in bronze, plaster, terra-cotta, wax and stone displayed in three galleries, including: The Susan and John Diekman Rotunda, which features Rodin’s most famous sculpture, "The Thinker;" The Eugénie B. Taylor Gallery, which will introduce Rodin’s life and artistic vision through a selection of portrait busts and early achievements, such as "The Age of Bronze;" and the Rodin Gallery, which will be devoted to exploring his greatest monument projects, including “The Gates of Hell.” The reinstallation opens Sept. 15. It’s no coincidence that Stanford University has emerged as a leading arts destination along the Peninsula. Since 2006, Stanford has been on a hectic pace to create a concentration of museums, galleries and performance spaces around Palm Drive, opening a new arts building every year from 2013 to 2015, as well as renovating existing facilities. The new Arts District provides ample opportunities to admire and (if you’re a student) create art. It’s a good place to spend the day exploring the sculpture garden, free museums and modern architecture of the newest facilities, or take in a performance.

New Children’s Hospital nears completion

T

he new $1.1 billion Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is scheduled to open

in December after five years of construction. It will house a cancer center, acute-care and intensive-care units, and a surgical treatment center that will make Packard the largest in terms of children’s hospital operating rooms in Northern California. The hospital will include interactive wildlife art, more than 3.5 acres of gardens and green spaces, California ecosystem-themed floors, and sustainable and cutting-edge technological features. The older hospital will be joined by enclosed bridges on each floor to the new “Main” hospital. The project is part of the multibillion-dollar Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which also includes the new 824,000-square-foot Stanford Health Care hospital, which is slated to open in 2018.

The Midpeninsula has a variety of grocery-shopping options to suit every taste, but Piazza’s Fine Foods has been named the cream of the crop. With its delicious deli, old-fashioned market feel (still owned and operated by the Piazza family, whose patriarch modeled the store after those he used to love in his homeland of Sicily) and high-quality food choices, it’s no wonder why shoppers love it. Piazza’s carries a large variety of organic and supreme quality produce. What’s more, this family market supported eco-friendly practices more than two decades before San Francisco’s first hippie even thought about hugging a tree. Piazza’s supports the dietary desires of their customers by supplying plenty of organic, Kosher and gluten-free options and promoting healthy eating. After all, the motto is “Chi mangia bene, vive bene!” (He/she who eats well, lives well.)

Stanford memory researchers looking for volunteers Dozens of Stanford researchers from multiple disciplines have teamed up with the Stanford Alzheimer’s Research Center to conduct interdisciplinary research on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders through a $7.3 million grant from the National Institute of Health. As part of the push to better understand the onset of the disease, the Research Center is recruiting those with early stage diagnosed Alzheimer’s as well as healthy volunteers without memory issues for multiple clinical trials. Stanford neurologist and biotechnology pioneer Frank Longo, who co-leads the new Stanford Neuroscience Health Center, said the greatest barrier to getting effective therapies to people “is that it’s so hard to know what’s going on in the brain with Alzheimer’s disease. If we understood that, we’d be developing therapies at tenfold the rate we are now, and they’d have a greater chance of being effective.” IF YOU ARE INTERESTED... alo Alto is poised to open its fourth park dedicated to dogs in early 2018.

Peers Park are set to be finalized this fall, and construction is anticipated to begin as early as January. The park, as proposed, would lie along the northeastern fence, adjacent to the train tracks. It would have separate enclosures for large and small dogs, a sliding 12-foot gate between the two areas and water fountains for dogs, among other features. The city, which currently has three dedicated dog parks, has been working to increase that number and has identified 11 sites as potential locations for future dog parks. The city’s other dog parks are located at Greer, Hoover and Mitchell parks.

Talk about your Harker experience. It’s been amazing. Coming from a public middle school I feel like I’ve had more opportunities to do more things and it’s probably been the best decision I made, ever.

What’s your favorite class? I love chemistry and biology. I plan to continue studying marine biology.

Harker wants to bring out the best in your child across all areas - academic, extracurricular and personal - so that students can discover their passions and make a positive impact on the world. We invite you to learn more about how Harker can inspire your children. Visit our website or

Describe the Harker community. It’s very welcoming and it’s so diverse. It’s so cool to see how different people get along really well together. Harker students and faculty always supporting each other is awesome.

What surprises you most about Harker? I’ve been surprised at how far teachers will go to help you to succeed – they are really passionate about that.

contact us! Founded in 1893, The Harker School is a Pre-12, college preparatory school in San Jose that has earned international recognition for its top academics, quality teachers and students’ achievements.

New! Peninsula Shuttle Service For the convenience of our many families on the Peninsula we have added a bus service to Harker from Portola Valley and Los Altos.
