Roots in the community? You betcha. There are locals, and then there is the local’s local – which is Brian. He was raised in Palo Alto, and in turn, is raising his family here as well. It’s a deep relationship with the area, as evidenced by Brian’s 25 years in real estate on the Peninsula and his role as an active, lifelong community volunteer. So it’s no wonder people far and wide look to him for his deep local knowledge, expertise, integrity, and network. You and Brian Chancellor; it’s an opportunity to grow together.

WELCOME TO INFO PALO ALTO From its earliest beginnings, Palo Alto cemented itself as a tight-knit community with an entrepreneurial spirit that thrives on innovation and pushing beyond the established boundaries. The city has played a pivotal role in the arts, education, politics, technology and science, and yet its residents recognize that it is the plentiful civic amenities and culture of braininess (cultivated through close ties to Stanford University) that have fostered the dynamic life they so enjoy. Our annual Info Palo Alto publication aims to make it easier for residents to maintain this spirit of collaboration by capturing key resources and data needed to connect with neighborhood leaders, participate in the community and create positive change. Within its pages you will find information about the community from how to contact the mayor to where to find advocates for seniors and those in need. Our education section offers comparative information on public and private schools. The outdoors chapter maps out where you can swim, skateboard and play tennis. The government chapter provides information on the boards and commissions that guide the city. In addition to Info Palo Alto, you can visit PaloAltoOnline.com to stay up to date on Palo Alto news. Subscribe to Express, a daily email, and have the news delivered right to your inbox. Or check out Weekend Express, emailed on Thursday, for the scoop on arts and entertainment. Both are free: sign up at Palo AltoOnline.com/express. If you’ve got suggestions for next year’s Info, please email editor@paweekly.com. We appreciate your feedback. P

alo Alto’s Public Art Program has transformed eight magnolia trees in front of City Hall into cobalt blue sculptures as part of the temporary environmental art installation “The Blue Trees.” Artist Konstantin Dimopoulos colored the trees’ bark with an eco-friendly, non-toxic colorant last May to bring attention to global deforestation. The installation — expected to remain on display through the beginning of 2019 depending on weather conditions — is part of the art program’s approximately 300 permanent and portable works spread throughout the city. “Go with the Flow” (below) is another new work that the city recently unveiled at the Louis Road-Fielding Drive intersection. EXPLORING STANFORD’S ARTS DISTRICT Stanford University’s Arts District provides ample opportunities to admire and (if you’re a student) create art. Since 2006, Stanford has been on a hectic pace to create a concentration of museums, galleries and performance spaces around Palm Drive, opening new arts buildings as well as renovating existing facilities. Visitors can easily spend the entire day exploring the district’s sculpture garden, free museums and modern architecture of the newest facilities, or taking in a performance.

Improv show with Indian flavor Naatak, the Midpeninsula nonprofit theater group that bills itself as the largest Indian-American theater company in the United States, added a new genre to its repertoire in 2017 with the launch of “Improv Masala,” an unscripted comedy program performed in “Hinglish” (Hindi + English). The group launched in 1995, when Stanford students — most of whom were engineers from India — decided they needed a creative outlet and began practicing the works of Indian playwrights in a member’s Palo Alto home.

Groundbreaking shelter program

HEALTH & SUPPORT SERVICES

East Palo Alto is set launch a groundbreaking shelter program in November that will use city-owned land at 1798 Bay Road for a one-year pilot program to allow people to park their RVs overnight while receiving support services, with the goal of moving the people into transitional housing. The East Palo Alto nonprofit Project WeHope, which provides shelter and services to homeless persons, will manage the program and lease the property. The site will have portable toilets, security guards, meals at Project WeHope’s gym, and laundry and shower services. The program will utilize $118,000 from the city’s general fund surplus and $200,000 from a voter-approved residential rental business-license tax.

SENIORS ACTIVITIES, RESOURCES, MEDICAL SERVICES

Boxing gym helps seniors fight tremors

The list below includes a broad range of resources to help older adults navigate housing, legal, health, transportation and social services available to them in the area. Services are located in Palo Alto, unless otherwise noted.

SENIOR CENTERS

A growing number of seniors with Parkinson’s are turning to Rock Steady Boxing Silicon Valley in Mountain View to fight the tremors, unsteady gait and speech issues that often accompany the disease. The nonprofit gym opened in 2017 as part of a fast-growing movement that uses boxing to reduce the disease’s symptoms. Several days a week, members stretch, jog, jump, kick, jab, punch and shout their way through a rigorous 90-minute workout under the upbeat tutelage of professional boxing coach Freddy Silva. “A lot of the things we learn in boxing — agility, footwork, balance, flexibility and rhythm — happen to be really helpful to people with Parkinson’s,” Silva said. A new ‘Dementia-friendly City’ Palo Alto is exploring how to become a Dementia-friendly City dedicated to fostering quality of life for those with memory loss. City leaders teamed up with Avenidas, Age-Friendly Silicon Valley and the Alzheimer’s Association in March to look at how government, businesses and residents can work together to provide better resources — like training for first responders, community support networks and policies that better aid employees who are also caregivers. • Back to school after 60 Former Stanford Medical School dean Philip Pizzo is helping older adults reinvent their lives through the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute that he founded in 2014 to study whether people who are given the opportunity to renew their purpose will live better and longer. Since its launch, nearly 75 tuition-paying “fellows” have gone through the one-year program to study anything they choose. Pizzo currently is exploring ways to expand the program to community colleges and use the lessons learned at Stanford to change the way society thinks about age and aging. alo Alto’s redesigned municipal golf course, now called Baylands

Golf Links, opened in May following a $12-million-plus reconfiguration of all 18 holes that included bringing in nearly half a million cubic yards of soil from Stanford University to transform what was once a flat, green expanse into a hilly landscape. The ditches that once populated the course have been extended, reshaped and turned into 55 acres of wetlands with natural grasses and other native vegetation. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED: Baylands Golf Links is located at 1875 Embarcadero Road. For more information, call 650856-0881 or go to baylandsgolflinks.com. Baylands boardwalk to reopen in December

T

he replacement of the plank boardwalk at Baylands Nature Preserve that stretches out a quarter-mile across the marshland to an observation platform over San Francisco Bay, is proceeding a year ahead of schedule, with construction set to finish by December. In June, the City of Palo Alto approved a $1-million contract to replace the 1969 boardwalk, which closed to the public in 2014 because of structural damage (a 200-foot segment was reopened after minor repairs). The new 850-foot boardwalk will be slightly wider (5 feet versus 4 feet), with redwood railings and decking, four outlook points, an observation platform at the far end and benches. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED: The boardwalk is located near the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center and Preserve, 2775 Embarcadero Road (along the San Francisquito Creek Trail). For more information, call 650-329-2506.

From our Reggio-inspired early childhood program to our innovative middle school, we believe that students learn to their potential when they are inspired. Woodland School takes a joyful approach to learning and places an emphasis on inquiry-based projects, empowering and encouraging students to be active and engaged learners. Our small class sizes translate into more individualized attention for our students and enhance the learning environment. Woodland School is situated on 10.5 acres just west of Stanford University at highway 280. Our spacious and idyllic environment gives children room to breathe, space to play, and freedom to explore the environment around them— all beneficial to their social, emotional, and cognitive growth.

CONSIDER AN ALTERNATIVE TO MYLAR BALLOONS WHEN PLANNING YOUR PARTY. Otherwise, please keep track of those balloons.

The City of Palo Alto Utilities values your safety. Here are some helpful tips for handling balloons: •

Make sure helium-filled Mylar balloons are securely tied to a heavy weight to prevent them from floating away.

Never release Mylar balloons outside.

Do not bundle Mylar balloons together.

Never attempt to retrieve anything that becomes caught in a power line.

Avoid a power line that has fallen to the ground or is dangling in the air. Always assume downed electric lines are energized and extremely dangerous. Keep far away and immediately alert 911.

Thank you for your efforts to help keep us all safe. Visit cityofpaloalto.org/safeutility to learn how to contact us in the event of an emergency, stay prepared before a hazard strikes, and access free helpful resources for safety and emergency preparedness.

In the event of a power outage, check cityofpaloalto.org/outagemap for immediate updates. Follow us on Twitter @PAUtilities or Facebook @PaloAltoUtilities for important news and information. City launches bike-share program

R

enting bikes and electric scooters for short rides through Palo Alto is set to get

easier. The city approved a bike-share pilot program in March, allowing an unlimited number of vendors to bring fleets equipped with GPS-tracking devices that don’t require docking stations to city streets. This means riders can locate, rent and drop off bikes/ scooters pretty much anywhere in the city. During the one-year program, city officials plan to monitor results and then determine whether the program is worth continuing. .
