Traditional Products for Shipwrights and Riggers

Product Catalog #1

Wooden Boat Chandlery Traditional Products for Shipwrights and Riggers Since the age of sail, chandleries have supplied ships in port with everything needed to sail across the seas or complete their upcoming refit. With its good anchorage at the entrance of the Puget Sound, the Port Townsend waterfront has been home to a number of chandleries since it was founded in 1851. In the same tradition the Wooden Boat Chandlery offers traditional fittings, rope and marine products for shipwrights, riggers, and boat builders of all stripes.

How can we help you? It has been said that one of the highest forms of art produced by the twentieth century were the classic yachts produced during its middle years. Many would include the working sailing ships that enjoyed a wonderful resurgence and today sail all over the world. We are pleased to serve those who appreciate these remarkable vessels—those sailed for pleasure or for work. This catalogue contains our growing collection of cordage, blocks and hardware for use aloft and alow.

Rope

Throughout history, sailors have wanted the same things from their standing and running rigging as they do today. If a rigger from 1640 could sit down with the team outfitting a modern racing yacht, they would understand each other. Strength, good hand, long wearing resistance to chafe, friendliness to marlinspike work, elasticity or inelasticity depending on application—these are characteristics that sailors have always demanded of rope. Today the choices in material are wider than ever. We are pleased to offer a range of both synthetic and natural fiber ropes chosen for their virtues in rigging applications.

Buff Polyester and Posh II

The result of lessons learned from sea service and lab analysis, Posh II and Buff Polyester are our premium spun polyester three-strand ropes. Polyester as a fiber is unmatched for UV resistance. Spun fibers give it superior hand, and being pre-stretched and heat-treated at the factory, its strength and stretch resistance are good. Buff Polyester tends to be slightly harder laid, making it a good choice for halyards; the slightly softer Posh II makes it a good choice for sheets.

Poseidon Double Braid

Posh II

This is a premium filament polyester braided rope that combines superior strength, hand and stretch characteristics with the look of braided Italian hemp rope which was coming into use in yachts after the Second World War.

Hempex Poseidon Double Braid

Hempex is the most like real hemp of all the rope we carry. Made of spun polypropylene, its hand is good, its lay firm, and it is the best of our ropes with regard to marlinspike work. Light and inexpensive, Hempex is a good choice for applications where authenticity is particularly important.

Hemp Natural Three‑Strand Hempex 3-strand

This is the real thing, not the prickly stuff many sailors have come to associate with the term “natural fiber.” Firmly laid of long strand hemp, this three-strand rope is strong and stretch resistant. As in the old days, it requires care in order to retain its qualities in service, but for those wishing to use what would have been used back then, this rope will not disappoint.

Filament Polyester Three‑Strand Hemp Natural

Made from long strand filament (as opposed to spun fibers which are shorter), this three-strand rope has superior strength and stretch resistance, making it particularly good for halyards, braces and running backstay falls. This rope is available in hemp color, or black for use as deadeye lanyards or light standing rigging in historic vessels where the appearance of tarred line is an asset.

Tarred Hemp Marline

The real thing! Strong long fiber hemp tarred to the correct saturation with pine tar. This marline is available in two-ply (particularly well suited for serving standing rigging, block strops, etc.) and three-ply, which is often preferred for lashing and seizing. Available in one-pound or five-pound tube-wound units. Five-ply available by special request.

Rigging & Sail Handling

As the North American distributor for Davey & Company, we offer bronze as the favored material to use for traditional boat fittings because it is immensely strong, durable and incredibly resistant to salt water. Bronze is well suited to casting, machining, and polishing. If you desire iron and steel material, please inquire with us for galvanized products that are available by special order.

Blocks

Among the specific trades that subdivide the rigger’s arts, block making is one of the most interesting and also most demanding. The Wooden Boat Chandlery is proud to introduce Townsend Blocks™, made by our craftsmen and to specifications to suit any yacht or working sail application. If you don’t see what you need on our list, please ask for a quote on a custom job. No haul too small, no rig too big.

Townsend Blocks

Strength and Beauty Combined. These wood shell blocks are crafted in a traditional design that embodies strength and quality. Cheeks are made of black locust with a linseed oil and beeswax finish. Delrin sheaves with bronze bushings, with 316L stainless steel bindings and pins for optimal longevity and performance. Singles, doubles and triples in a range of sizes are available. The blocks are produced in Port Townsend and carry the Made in USA certification. Independent breaking load testing done by Obert Marine, Seattle. Custom blocks can be made to your specifications. Tufnol Blocks

6687

Our Tufnol blocks are made of linen compressed at high temperatures in phenolic resin, producing a remarkably durable, strong and self-lubricating material that was the preferred choice for high performance blocks from the 1940s till the 1970s. Tufnol is exceptionally resistant to marine environments. Sailing a wooden yacht from that period or perhaps a ‘classic plastic’ built later in that era? Chances are these blocks are what she was fitted with when she was new. All breaking loads are certified by Germanischer Lloyd in Hamburg. 1 daN ~ 1 kg. Larger blocks up to 22 mm are available by special order. (See next page.)

Deck Hardware Cleats

Cleats are among the first boat fittings invented. Here’s a useful tip: The length of a cleat should ideally be 12 times the diameter of the rope used with it. Cleats should be fastened by bolt at an angle of about 15 degrees to the direction of pull on the line; otherwise, the line tends to ride over itself and jam. We offer a full line of bronze and wooden cleats from Davey & Company. If you don’t see what you need, please inquire.

Bosun’s Locker For The Hull And Deck Caulking Cotton in Batts or Stranded

The caulking of any traditional carvel-planked wooden vessel requires the use of cotton or tarred oakum. We carry soft, top quality caulking cotton from two sources: Davey & Company, which offers the British style made of 8 strands yielding a 5⁄16˝ (8 mm) diameter; and Cancord brand from Canada, which supplies batts of 120-grain traditional boat caulking cotton. BOAT SOUP RECIPE

Once upon a time, much of the oakum used for caulking ships came from the laborious unpicking of old hemp rope, basically recycled from old tarry ropes and cordage. Prisoners and orphaned children in workhouses in London, England provided the labor. Today, oakum is made from properly carded and appropriately tarred real hemp fiber—the best available now and every bit as good as the best available in days gone by. We carry extremely fine oakum steeped in Stockholm Tar, Oakum used primarily below the water line. Available in coils, or burlap wrapped bales. The oakum bale has four 9 lb coils, measuring approximately 1866 ft per 37 lb bale.

A tried and true concoction to coat the hull inside and out, the rigging if it’s parceled and served, and even the deck if you don’t mind sticky feet!

Jeffery’s No. 2 Black Marine Glue

equal parts boiled linseed oil and turpentine half part pine tar splash of black paint dash of japan drier

Ahh, the aromatic smell of an open jar of this thick liquid conjures up images of a long voyage for chandlery customers—they love it. This traditional substance is used for preserving natural cordage, oakum and timber.

Apply generously and inhale often. Nectar of the gods.

Still produced in England from the original formula, this is the preferred choice for paying over caulked deck seams for more than 120 years. It remains flexible in low temperatures and withstands softening at high temps.

We carry the three major types of Japanese saws differentiated by the type of blade which in turn qualifies its function: DOZUKI translates as a saw with a stiffening spine. It has a spine along one edge of the blade, and allows shallow but accurate cuts. RYOBA has a two-sided blade (two cutting edges); one side has rip-saw blade teeth and the other is a cross-cut toothed blade. KATAHA (KATABA) is a spineless, single edged saw. It allows for deeper cuts. Most saws have replaceable blades, and some have handles sold separately. If you do not see what you are looking for please call us. NOTE: The Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke only! ITEM #

We are pleased to represent companies that produce high quality products, including small individual craftsmen in the USA, and the reputable companies listed below. DAVEY & COMPANY, ENGLAND

Davey & Company was established in 1885 and is one of the oldest marine suppliers of traditional yacht and ship fittings. Hardware is made today from various alloys of bronze using the same patterns as times past. If you are building a traditional vessel or restoring a classic, it is likely that the orgininal equipment came from Davey & Co. The product range that we carry includes Tufnol blocks, bronze hardware, copper fasteners, navigation lights, portlights, and prisms.

LANGMAN ROPE, HOLLAND

The Langman family has been making high performance rope specifically for the rigging of ships in the same town in Holland since 1638. Their original rope walk equipment stands today in the Nijkerk museum, a short distance from their modern rope walk and rope making facility. The integrity with which they build rope, the reliability with which they supply and stand behind what they produce is everything one would expect of one of the world’s leading manufacturers. We are proud to represent Langman products, both traditional and modern, in North America.

ENGLISH BRAIDS, ENGLAND

English Braids is an established ropemaker renowned for their high technology cordage. They are the original manufactures of spun polyester hemp look-alike.

E.S. SORENSEN, DENMARK

The company produces a breadth of lighting of ageless design, aiming for the perfect aesthetic look and functionality. We are pleased to carry their line of classic lighting of exceptional quality for small and large boats, which includes tealight lamps, oil lamps, gimbaled lighting and replacement parts.

Hand-built in the USA, Shipmate Stoves have been reliably and admirably serving those who go to sea for nearly 150 years. With a choice of two different models and a variety of colors, Shipmate Stoves’ legendary quality sets the standard by which all other shipboard stoves are judged. 34 WOODEN BOAT CHANDLERY CATALOG
