Hello and a warm welcome to the June issue of PALS Magazine. Summer is on the way and a little more activity is now being observed in Polis and Latchi Harbor. Certainly we are hearing a lot of talk about the future plans for Latch Harbor/Marina.

Recently the Port Authorities have presented their very expensive plans about how they plan to develop Latchi Harbor. We will now have to wait for the CTO to present their own plans about how they wish to develop the Harbor and I imagine a few more years will pass before a decision is made as to how things will be redeveloped. We are hearing a lot of talk about the plans but the facts remain that work undertaken in the Harbor still remains outstanding and all the time we are talking about these plans, some boating people that cannot fulfill their boating needs here leave Latchi and find more satisfactory boating facilities in Turkish Marinas.

The big discussion is whether to develop the area into a Harbor or a Marina. Some people think that if it is developed into a Marina it will be very expensive, very exclusive with high fences around it excluding some of the local population. Other people believe if it is developed into a Harbor it will lack facilities and services. As a very keen boater myself and having visited numerous Harbors and Marinas all over the world. I have found it very difficult to differentiate between a Harbor and a Marina and it is only when I have read the official notices that I know whether I am in a Harbor or a Marina. What is of paramount importance is that the development is sympathetic and in harmony with the area around it, it provides access to visitors, meets the local needs, is clean, tidy, safe, secure and therefore provides adequate facilities for the boats themselves, the owners, their guests and visitors etc. Lets stop talking about it and get on with the task in hand. Please write to us with your views because at the end of the day it will be a Government decision as to how the area is developed and we should have a say in how the Government decides. Have fun, happy reading and happy boating! All the very best,

4 Cover Story Plans for the New Harbor

Andy Papaiacovou

So far, Paphos Harbor and Latchi Harbor have been developed as Harbors and fishing boat refuges and they have been under the management of the Port Authorities. In November 2007 the Government decided to change these into Marinas. Since then there have been a number of objections by the Port Authorities and by some of the public with regard to the proposed changes. Due to these objections the Government has requested the Port Authorities and the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO) to supply new studies and plans in order for the Government to decide whether they will continue with the Port Authorities or move to the CTO. Both these organisations have already presented their plans to the public with regard to their ideas for the development of Paphos Harbor and recently the Port Authorities have presented their plans for the development of Latchi Harbour.

Phase 3 would be concerned with extending and completing the wall around the Harbor along with the creation of a new pontoon to allow cruise ships to visit. The Situation Now! After studying the original plans again, the Port Authorities have established that some of the facilities they were proposing would not be sustainable regarding visiting cruise ships. Therefore a new plan has been devised which will increase the number of pontoons available and improve the quality and quantity of the facilities available. These revised plans would cost â‚Ź26 million. The new plans would be developed in two phases:

Outlined below are the original plans proposed by the Port Authorities.

Short term plans would include some of the project work already carried out, ie a fixed pontoon is now available. General Aims of the Port The renovation of two Authorities derelict warehouses in the old Their aim is for Latchi Harbor and the existing Harbour to remain as a Harbor Harbor Police Station to be with a traditional character and developed into a traditional they should continue to Coffee Shop. 6 Polis People New Business - Akamas Design and Typesetting - the Dream and the Reality There's a new business in Polis Square – Akamas Design & Typesetting which is based at The Noticeboard. Set up in early 2010, Natalie Allen, Artist and Graphic Designer and Jenny Avis, Typesetter, have combined their talents to great effect and can offer a completely unique range of design, typesetting, translation and office services at affordable rates to the local Polis area and beyond. Natalie came to live in Cyprus almost 2 years ago for that more relaxed and less stressful lifestyle that we all crave. After entering a Youth Training Scheme in Graphic Design, Natalie learned everything from vinyl graphics for vehicles and shop fronts to sign writing and 4 colour processing. This led to further jobs which included working on the magazines and catalogues for Toys R Us and designing office stationery, posters, leaflets, banners and lots more. A partnership followed whereby her biggest commission was the design and livery of a double decker bus! Since then Natalie has continued to take on commissions for friends and family and prior to leaving the UK worked as an Art Technician. Having already achieved a Diploma in Art and Design in 2006 she began an Arts Degree at Bournmouth Arts Institute which she hopes to complete sometime in the future. Natalie's business partner is Jenny Avis who relocated to Cyprus in September 2007 with her husband Geoff, also looking for that more relaxed lifestyle whilst doing some tennis coaching in her spare time. Jenny's passion in life is tennis but her working life whilst in the UK has involved working with the MOD as a Scientist and Administrator and after playing tennis on the UK national tennis circuit and typesetting part time for 4 years, she started her own Typesetting and Graphic Design Business which she owned for 13 years. This offered services that included foreign language, engineering and mathematical books and brochures. Since arriving in Cyprus she had been thinking of starting up another design and typesetting business so that she could produce all her own material for her tennis coaching business, Topspin Tennis, and also it was a business that wouldn't be dependant on the

weather! Jenny met Natalie whilst she was working in the Noticeboard they listened to one anothers stories and their combined talents have evolved into Akamas Design and Typesetting. For further information about the services that Akamas Design and Typesetting can offer, contact Natalie on 97 738649 or Jenny on 97 681998 or email Akamasdesigntypesetting@hotamail.com. After a successful concert performed by the Orphean Singers at the Polis Cultural Centre on 9th April 2010, two cheques were presented to H.O.P.E. (Hospital of Polis Equipment) and P.A.R (Polis Animal Rescue). They each received Ă„500 for their worthy causes. Our thanks to the Orphean Singers for bringing their performance to Polis and for their generous donation to the two Polis charities that help so much in this area.

Cookery Corner 7

Cyprus Dips! Melitzanosalata/Aubergine Salad

Skordalia 1/2 kg. potatoes, boiled 10 cloves of garlic, minced Extra virgin olive oil Red wine vinegar Salt Freshly ground black pepper

Four medium sized eggplants/aubergines Three garlic cloves 1/2 cup of olive oil

Skordalia can be prepared both by blender/mixer and by hand. Any kind of mixer definitely makes the process of making skordalia faster and easier but there is some subtle difference if you eat one made by hand. Which ever method you use, boil potatoes in a lot of salted water. Be sure that they are well done, drain and peel them. Using mixer or blender, add potatoes and garlic cloves and purĂŠe them together at the lowest speed until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy. It should be thick but not too much ( add a little water and keep mixing it if the mixture becomes too thick). Oil and vinegar are added at the end, slowly, then salt and pepper to taste.

Put the aubergines in the oven and cook until they feel very soft (about 40 minutes in a medium/high oven). Slice in half and spoon out the flesh and place in a bowl. If the aubergines are cooked well the flesh should come out easily. Put the garlic cloves in a press and add to the aubergine. Using a fork mix the garlic into the aubergine and add the oil, a little at a time. When all the oil has been absorbed the salad is ready. Place in a fridge until ready to serve and spinkle with chopped parsley. Delicious eaten with pitta bread.

Perfect to eat with warm pitta bread or as an accompaniment to fish.

TZATZIKI 180ml strained natural yoghurt 2 cloves garlic, crushed juice of 1 large lemon 2 small cucumbers, finely chopped 1 tablespoon flat leafed parsley or mint, finely chopped black pepper 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Put your yoghurt and garlic in a small bowl. Add the cucumber, parsley and lemon juice and beat well. Add pepper to taste then finally add the olive oil and mix once more. Drizzle some olive oil on top plus a shake of paprika for an added zing. Delicious as a dip or served with fish.
