At last, the days are getting cooler. The unbearable heat and humidity we endured in August seems to be slowly moving away and the more comfortable and mellow days of September are with us at last. Whilst we all love the sunshine and warm weather we all have our limits. Even my two cats have been paddling in the pool in an attempt to cool down. The crazy days in Latchi Harbour are now over and the visitors have returned to their homes. This year it’s seemed as though the whole of Nicosia have descended on Polis and Latchi for their Summer Holiday, but who can blame them! We are always looking for new stories to share with our readers and this month sees the launch of our photographic competition. So dig out any old photographs that you have, they may even have a story to tell which you’d like to share with us. Or why not start snapping now, you may be lucky! Thank you all for continuing to contribute to the magazine with your stories, letters and personal experiences. Keep them coming. All the best and have a good September.

4 One Tipi, Three Horses and Two Sunsets. A Honeymoon in Anadhiou Caroline Grossmith

Photographs by Luke Grossmith and Pawel Sikorski The creaking of leather and stamping of hooves, evening sun glowing through dusty swirls trailing the lovers' horses …. laughter dancing on the cool breeze. Guy had taken 10 weeks of secret riding lessons so he could surprise Pippa, his horse mad bride, with a romantic ride to spend t h e n i g ht i n a T i p i overlooking the forested hills of Cyprus and far from the madding crowd!

As their horses picked their way deep into the forest and along the cool tree lined river bed, Guy's horse, Harry suddenly lifted his head with pricked ears and stopped, snorting softly …… there in front of them were five Moufflon, hovering motionless in silent study of the riders, before galloping up the vertical cliff and off into the forest. What a snapshot of nature – uninhibited, beautiful, wild. Down in the valley, the evening sun had slipped behind the sharp outline of the mountains, but as the riders cantered up the soft track to Anadhiou it's golden orb reappeared behind them casting long shadows as they approached the awaiting Tipi and a welcomed Brandy Sour.

course candlelit dinner, prepared in the field by the multi talented Pawel! D res s ed b u tterf ly prawns, garlic ciabatta, many marinaded kebabs, crunchy salads and death by chocolate desert, coffee, the works! Mmmm! The most delicious organic halloumi ever was specially prepared by Niki and Leonidas (99 65 48 65) at the nearby village of Kritou Marottou – which, incidentally is well worth a visit - you'll see the direction signs in the village (…in Greek but the logo is obviously for halloumi!) The starlit stillness of the night was replaced by the watery first light of dawn and a relaxed croissant and coffee for the newly weds……. (trifilli, barley, chaff and sugarbeet for the horses!) Saddled and off before the sun cranked up her heat, Guy and Pippa embarked on the return leg of their romantic adventure, back through the abandoned Turkish villages and the Sarama plain and home to the stables near Lysos and a welcomed second breakfast at the Paradisos Hills Hotel, where the honeymooners were spending their last night.

The first Tipis were designed by the Buffalo hunters of the Great Plains. The painting designs on the tipi traditionally told the story of the lodge owner – and the rideincyprus Tipi follows this tradition! The top third represents the sky and the spirit worlds and may show constellations, swirling winds or moon phases. Ours shows the golden sun of Cyprus … The middle section of the tipi represents the here and now and hopes and would often depict running bison, sioux horses, dancing people or eagles. Of course ours is the rideincyprus horse! …. and the bottom third shows places, the land, Earth our design incorporates the arches of the Venetian Bridges in the blue of the rivers and the green of the mountains and forests in this area. As the horses were washed down and fed in the corral nearby, our honeymooners showered and dressed for a delicious 3 PALS Magazine September 2010 www.palsmagazine.com

Saudi Arabian Royal Billionaire holidays in Latchi If you were around and about Latchi Harbour at the end of July you won’t have failed to notice the presence of a 90 metre long luxury yacht just off the coastline near the Anassa Hotel. It belonged to Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, a member of the Saudi Royal Family and nephew of Saudi Arabian King Abdullah. According to Forbes Magazine his net worth is estimated at $13.3 billion making him the 22nd richest person in the world He is reported to have gained his fortune through investments in real estate and the stock market Unfortunately the yacht was so large that it was unable to dock in Latchi Marina and a special jetty had to be built on the beach so that a 10 metre boat could be used to transport him to and from the yacht. There is also a helicopter on board. During his stay local police took measures to protect him in addition to the Prince’s own private security. The yacht was built in 1980 by the yacht builder Bennetti at a cost of $100 million. It was originally built as the “Nabila” for Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi and at the time of its construction it was one of the largest yachts in the world. It featured as the Flying Saucer, the yacht of James Bond villain, Largo, in the film Never Say Never Again. The yacht was later sold in 1988 to the Sultan of Brunei who in turn sold it to Donald Trump who renamed her Trump Princess. It was then bought by the Prince in 1991. The yacht’s latest name, Kingdom 5KR stems from the Prince’s investment company, Kingdom Holding Company, his lucky number (5) and his children’s initials (K and R).

Helicopter, accompanied by a Police helicopter from his yacht to Kellaki in Limassol district to meet with President Demetris Christofias before he left Cyprus. It has also been confirmed that A r c h b i s h o p Chrysostomos and Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas also met with the Prince during his stay here. The Archbisop was spotted dining at the 5 star luxury hotel, the Anassa on Saturday before boarding the super yacht belonging to the Prince. It has also been reported that a local taxi firm assisted the Prince and his entourage in their travel arrangements whilst out and about in the Paphos area. The Prince left Paphos Airport amid speculation that the prime reason for his visit was to investigate potential investment in leisure and tourism on the island. We shall have to wait and see!

7 John and Penny Smith are Returning to Nepal As regular readers will know, we spent time last winter in Nepal working as volunteers and we are delighted to be going back in January. We will again share our time and skills to help Early Years teachers in Nepal and will also run lessons to give young people a chance to practice speaking English. It is amazing how much can develop from a single opportunity in Nepal – the land where less is so very much more. Last time, thanks to everyone's generosity, we set off with over €4,000 to spend on charitable projects. We will take funds this time too for new projects in rural areas. We will return to the nursery class at Pushpanjali School to meet the student we sponsored and pay the fees for his next school year. There is an opportunity to renew our friendship with The Chitra Sari Villagers where our funds were used to improve their village. This time we will be working at their local school teaching English and establishing an after school club in a spare classroom. We need funds to furnish and equip the club so the youngsters get the chance to learn to use computers, have access to English books, arts and crafts materials and sports equipment that they will enjoy using with volunteers to help them.

We also need to create a similar club for deaf children who live away from their families in a foster home in Nuwakot during term time so that they can attend a specialist deaf school. A new foster home is being built for them this summer by local people with the help of Venture Scouts from the UK. The deaf children can then have fun there together with volunteers after school work is done each day to learn new skills and their quality of life will be so much improved. A s b e fo re , Himalayan Encounters will guide us in making our purchases locally, employ local people to do the work associated with the projects and will then organise future volunteers and local people to carry on what we start so we are sure the projects are sustainable.

craft work etc. Could you and your friends think of a novel way to enjoy time together and collect some money for Nepal m a y b e a collection at a significant birthday or a Christmas party, a special get together or sponsored event, perhaps? If you would like us to tell you more or show a few pictures we would be happy to come along so please contact us. We will make photo albums to leave at the new After School Clubs so everyone will know how, thanks to you, their club came about. The one thing you can count on is that the people who will benefit will treasure your gift from the bottom of their hearts. We do hope you will be able to help us. Thank you. John & Penny. 99 266853.

Friday 22 October – Pasta Evening Saturday 12 November – Curry evening Saturday 26 November – Fish evening Why not get together with a group of your friends and come and join us?

11 God Speaks... Through His Word Michael Wright

acceptance that Jesus did what was necessary for me, on the cross.

“…through Jesus, the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through Him, everyone who believes is justified…” (Acts 13:38-39)

Here's a story that Jesus Himself told, that shows God's way better than I could. You will find it in Luke 18:9-14

Guilt is a dreadful thing. We have all done wrong at times in our lives (that's what God calls sin!), and sometimes our wrong brings a lot of guilt with it. Sometimes it eats us up inside. Sometimes it affects our sleep. Sometimes it makes us think about whether God can ever accept us. We try to atone for it. We try to forget it. But do we ever feel totally comfortable with God.

Jesus told this parable to some who were confident of their own righteousness, and looked down on everyone else. Two men went up to the temple to pray, One a Pharisee (a self-righteous religious leader) and the other a tax collector (a traitor and a swindler in those days – not like tax collectors today!). The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself, “God, I thank you that I am not like other men – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.”

Read those words from God to you again….and again….and again! Yes! There is forgiveness, but more than that – there is justification! That's the word that tells us that our sinfulness is not only forgiven, but also cleaned away. God will make us as if we had never sinned! Too good to be true? - actually no! Is it offered to me? - actually yes! What do I have to do? - believe in Jesus Actually,God does ask for a humbling acknowledgement of my sinfulness, a willingness to let Him change me, and an

FORZA 9 GALLERY Exhibition

But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. That's God's way – will you come to Him now?

12 The Journey - Part 7

Sue de Groot

Last month, I told you about our visit to the holy sites of Jerusalem, and that Avi the guide, had herded us through the important sites, but when we walked through the Souk, we had strict instructions not to stop. In the Old City where we walk back through the Souk, it soon becomes apparent that some people want to stop and shop. Avi says No but there are sounds of discord amongst the group, since the main objective in life for most Americans is to Shop til you Drop. The Souk is a myriad of colours and objects to buy. The pace of the group slows down much to Avi's annoyance, and some of us manage to whip in and out of the various shops, haggle and come away with desirable purchases. Avi is becoming very irate, and stamps his foot again, saying he has a programme to follow, he has to stick to it, and what can he do? June and I are quite expert at nipping in and out of shops and haggling since we have been to the souks in Damascus, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey (Grand Bazaar), we know what we want and how much we want to pay for it. One of the best lessons I have ever learnt in life was from a Chinese girl friend of mine, whose husband worked for the UN and were at one time stationed in Yemen. What I found out later about the Chinese was that they would never buy anything that was not offered to him at a “DISCOUNT”. I digress here to give you the benefit of her advice. When she was in Yemen she had a local driver who would take her to the markets and shops for purchases. She never paid the amount she was asked for. Her first reaction to the price was “Kali” which means too expensive. From that day on she was known as Mrs. Kali. What she told me has forever stood me in good stead. Haggle over the price by any means, but before you start haggling, have in your hand, the exact amount in cash for what you are willing to pay, and when the haggling reaches a stalemate, hold out your hand and say “Here you are, this is what I will pay”. She said that once a trader saw the cash in front of his eyes, his business acumen would overcome his greed, and the sale was yours. This actually works. Try it. Haggling is not demeaning in these countries, it is an accepted way of buying and selling. It is expected of you. We return to our story. We have returned to Coach 7. We are on the way back to the Ship, but, of course, Avi has a trick up his sleeve. Our next unscheduled stop is at The Souk of Farouk for 20 minutes to buy postcards, carpets or whatever. Avi explains that we were not allowed to stop in the Old Souk, at the risk of again losing his flock, but that he had planned this especially to compensate. In other words, he had prearranged this stop because he got commission on anything sold there. We all troop into the Souk of Farouk. At the beginning of this so-called spontaneous visit, the proprietors Abdul and Achmed (not seemingly Jewish names) give us a diatribe over their goods, offering us a one-off 20% discount. June is taken by the arm by Achmed into the Back Room (wow, serious worries about whether she would be abducted and

sold into the white slave market), but it turns out that this is where Achmed has his “best” carpets, and so we are pressured into “maybe we want a good carpet?” But we decline so Achmed asks where we come from, and we say Cyprus, whereupon he asks what we do for a living (trying to find out whether it would be worth his while to move to Cyprus, supposedly), and when he learns that we are retired folk, he shrugs his shoulders and says okay, take a photo of me with June, which I did. We are now getting towards the end of our Day in Jerusalem. We buy a Methusalah, which is what Jewish people hang on their doors to touch every time they enter a house. It contains a script from the Torah, in the sense of May All Who Enter This House Live A Long Life”. Our Methusalah is in gilt and silver, with intricate carving, about the size of a fountain pen, and a singularly beautiful object. The prices of methusalahs can go into the thousands, but ours are quite modestly priced and a lovely souvenir. Mine is hanging in the inside of my front door and I now touch it every time I enter the house. We buy postcards, and a book on Jerusalem, and a book on Israel, only by now we are all being hurried up, so June grabs a book on Israel, only to discover later that it is in French. A wonderful day, so many impressions, feelings of empathy with the difficult lives that Israelis lead, their vulnerability, their unmistakable feelings of xenophobia and the ever present danger on their doorsteps. It is easy to discard their sentiments of using every effort available to protect themselves, but when you have been there and seen the foe at close range, it is easier to understand why they are as they are. It has been a memorable excursion, and it is time to go back to the ship. We must make a list tomorrow for Mario, the concierge of the items we want to ship back home from Dubai. We arrive at the ship, there is no time to change for dinner, so we eat Tapas in the Tapas Bar There is a half day excursion tomorrow to Alexandria, Egypt, and the day after a full day excursion to the Pyramids. We are scheduled to sail from the dock at Ashdod tonight and sail for the whole night and should dock tomorrow in Alexandria at 11 a.m. We take a photo of the map of the planned route of the ship which is showing on the cctv in our room and we go to bed. Next month: Alexandria, Egypt, Driving along the Corniche, King Farouk and Brandy Sours, and a Revolutionist Guide called Nevine.

Closing date for entries 15th October 2010.

This weekend we took our boat out of the Marina for a short trip (hours), and while we were out, another yacht attempted to moor in our space, and while doing so, caught our permanent mooring line in their propellor, cut our line, and then cleared off!! On our return we were in grave danger of damaging ourselves, and other yachts because of the lack of our mooring line (our boat is 65 feet). Our neighbours told us that they had heard some-one shouting in Greek that they had caught our line, so they were fully aware of what they had done. We are still trying to establish the identity of the boat concerned because they are legally obliged to correct the damage that they had caused. The presence of a Harbourmaster on duty could have a) prevented the other boat from trying to moor in our space in the first place, and b) officially identified the vessel concerned so that appropriate action could be taken. Thankfully other owners were on hand to assist us and provide temporary mooring lines. We had to use a scuba diver to recover our mooring line from the bottom of the marina. I can't think of any other Marina that does not have management "cover" over the weekend. We are being "short-changed" because we do not have enough CPA presence and the situation is becoming chaotic as they try to cram in more and more vessels (some of which are far too big for this Marina!). Concerned of Latchi.

Karen Cunningham Karen’s Café formerly situated on the Steni Rd opposite Damianos Nissan garage has now completed its relocation to the entrance to Latchi Marina, next door to Zouk. Sadly we choose the heat wave to move and carry out some fairly substantial work on the new premises. Rural Cyprus

Sandra Dobson

Rural Cyprus is one of the most beautiful places anyone could choose to live, and Kathikas is one of the jewels in the Cypriot crown. It is a beautiful, traditional village and has welcoming and supportive local people, seven excellent Tavernas and a thriving Residents Association. Like most of Cyprus, it also has the odd snake! Well, perhaps a few more than that! Although I have lived here for the past six years, I have actually seen very few. I know they are there though, lurking in the undergrowth, waiting for me to walk past in all innocence, ready to pounce and bite me, thus hastening my demise! At least that was my misconception. And as you will see below, I am not alone with my fascination and fear of these reptiles:-

behave if we accidentally come across a snake. He explained how they live, what their needs are and how those needs do not have to conflict with ours. George is very willing to speak to any groups, and I would thoroughly recommend him. George himself was impressed with our Village Mayor for supporting us with our organization and with welcoming visitors as speakers. I guess here I should apologize here to our Mayor who, perhaps, I have taken for granted. He has always supported us and always attends our monthly meetings, as I had expected, but obviously not all Village Mayors are of a similar ilk. So take note Village Mayors, model yourselves on the Kathikas Village Mayor, and you will go far! If you are interested in our Association and would like to come along to our meetings, you would be very welcome. We meet usually, on the last Tuesday of each month at 10am at the Community Centre in the Village (opposite the Church). For further details, please ring Sandra on 99122630

The Petz Stuff Grooming Academy Shirley Velloza Do you use a groomer but would prefer to groom your dog yourself? Would you like to know how to trim his nails or clean his ears safe in the knowledge that you will not hurt him? Why not pop into the Petz Stuff Grooming Academy in Chlorakas, and learn from a professional. The Academy is cool, bright and spacious (large enough to groom 4 dogs at any one time), and is fully equipped with all the necessary grooming tools such as salon professional clippers, powerful dryers, dematters and all the ancillaries required for individual tasks. This facility is the first of its kind in Cyprus, and I asked Geoff (the owner) how the idea was born. “We have sold grooming equipment since we opened two years ago. This includes anything from brushes and combs right through to nail clippers and full grooming kits. Although some people are happy using this equipment, others are a little wary of certain tasks like cutting nails and this is something the Academy can help with. We have a choice of mini courses (covering specific areas like ears and paws), or full day courses (including lunch) that cover all aspects of grooming a dog. On non course days clients can rent a table and make full use of all the equipment available for only €12 for the first hour and €6 for each additional hour. Due to popular demand, we now offer a grooming service as well. “The courses are friendly and informal, with a relaxed approach that allows clients to learn at their own pace. These are very 'hands on'

which means bringing your pet along is essential! Both clients and pets are catered for, with ample rest breaks, and somewhere for your pet to have a drink and treat while the owner enjoys a well deserved coffee.” “A seasoned professional runs the courses. She has a huge amount of knowledge and can give clients the expertise and confidence to groom their own dogs. Pauline is already well known in the UK and Cyprus for her championship Beagles and American Cocker Spaniels. Pauline has over 40 years experience in dog breeding, and has been grooming dogs since the early 70”s. She was trained by the famous Gill East, and passed the Groomers Diploma with Distinction in 1976. She owned her own successful grooming salon in the Channel Islands for many years. As well as being a founder member of the British Groomers Association and the Pet Care Trust, Pauline is also a founder member of the UK Kennel Club Accredited Breeders Scheme. She holds the Canine Judging Diploma, and has groomed and handled many dogs for Crufts and Cypriot dog shows. Basically, if Pauline doesn't know something, it's not worth knowing! She is the ideal person to manage the Academy for us. So why not learn how to groom your own dog, have fun and save Euros? The Academy is located right next door to Petz Stuff on Eleftherias Avenue in Chlorakas. For course bookings, please call Pauline on 97789381. Since doing this I have been unable to put the computer into hibernate mode. How can I get hibernation to work again? A. To re-enable hibernation Click the Start menu and type cmd. Right-click on the cmd entry in the search results, choose Run as Administrator, then click Continue when the User Account Control (UAC) window appears. Type powercfg.exe/hibernate on and press Enter, then type exit and press Enter. Hibernation will now reappear in the power options windows. Vista won't play DVDs Q. I used to be able to play DVD movies in my Windows XP computer, but when I put them in my new PC it says “Windows Media Player cannot play DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on the computer”. What's wrong? A. Vista Home Premium and Ultimate can play DVDs without any extra software, but Vista Basic cannot. To play DVDs you'll need a decoding program. Returning to Windows XP? Q. I've purchased a Windows Vista computer, but I want to install Windows XP on it as well. I've read that to use both systems at once Windows XP must be installed first, is that true? A. Sadly, it is true. 23 Glorious gardens Blue - What a “Cool” Colour Whilst musing about what to write about for September, whilst sitting in a very hot and sticky room in August, I thought how nice it would be to be cool! I am not wishing Winter here of course – I love the Summer too much for that, but just to be a little cooler! In turn I thought about what colours have that cool feel, and naturally I was led to 'blue'. I do know that it is a favourite colour of many of you, (I myself have an herb garden that is all blue and white – I just love it). Blue has a long and topsy-turvy history in the Western world. Once considered a hot colour, it is now icy cool. The ancient Greeks scorned it as ugly and barbaric, but most Americans and Europeans now pick it as their favourite colour. In an entertaining history, the renowned medievalist Michel Pastoureau traces the changing meanings of blue from its rare appearances in prehistoric art to its international ubiquity today in blue jeans and Gauloises cigarette packs. Whilst in religious symbolism, blue signifies truth and is associated with the creative power of God. It has been used by priests at the grave, for it is symbolic of heaven. In ancient Rome, blue was worn by the public servants, thus marking the beginning of the idea for today's police uniforms. The expression "true blue" for constancy and fidelity perhaps originated with mariners, who associated the blue sky with freedom from storms. "Something blue" in the wedding jingle comes from the early Israelites, to whom blue symbolized love, fidelity, and purity. To the Navaho, the southern mountains are blue and have created the dawn. However, enough of it's history and back to plants, I thought it might be useful for you to have a record of blue plants that will do well here in Cyprus and then when friends admire them you can recount the history of the colour and they will be amazed by your incredible knowledge!!!

Sandra Dobson

bought in one of two types, either evergreen or deciduous Ceratostigma willmottianum is a deciduous drought-resistant shrub with bright blue flowers a n d i s e a s y t o g r o w. Rosmarinus officinalis is a wellknown quick-growing evergreen, pretty and a useful herb in cooking. It is aromatic and a pretty blue colour. Amongst the climbers, Clematis springs to mind. It likes full sun, but is better with it's roots in the shade, if you are looking for a blue colour, 'Lord Nevill' is a deep blue and 'The President' is a midnight blue. Thunbergia grandiflora or the 'Bengal clock vine' is an excellent climber and grows very easily, it has pale-blue trumpet flowers which are prolific. Moving on to the perennials, Felicia amelloides is a pretty plant, more often known as a 'Blue Marguerite', the foliage forms a mound which support many daisy-like flowers of pale blue with a yellow centre. I couldn't of course leave out Lavandula dentata, this particular species is the best, I think, for our dry Summers it is more drought resistant and has a longer blooming season. Vinca mayor the 'greater periwinkle' will naturalise easily, but it can become invasive, it might be useful as ground cover and I know you will love the blue flowers. Lastly I feel I should include Viola Odorata (perhaps in memory of my Mother whose name was Violet) this 'Sweet Violet' is excellent for ground cover in the shade, perhaps by a wall, or shaded bed. It is easy to grow, and it will flower from early Spring to mid-Summer, it has fragrant violet-coloured flowers – perfect! Should you have any thoughts or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Neil on 99117553 or email Sandra at Glorious.Gardens@hotmail.com

Cercis siliquastrum is a tree which tradition suggests that Judas hanged himself from, but the weak branches indicates that this is improbable. It is though a spectacular small tree which in Spring, before the leaves appear covers itself with clusters of purple peaflowers which can be eaten in salads or fritters One of the most beautiful blue flowering trees is the Jacaranda mimosifolia the foliage is fern-like which offers wonderful dappled shade in the Summer. It's only drawback is the mess it leaves that the spent flowers and leaflets make after they drop throughout the Winter, although many folk feel it is worth the mess to enjoy the stunning flowers. Beddleia davidii offers a semi-deciduous shrub with long flower spikes of purple (white and pink too if you prefer) 'Black Knight' is deep violet and 'Opera' has mauve flowers with a yellow eye. Ceanothus is a delightful blue-flowered shrub and grows well in full sun and it can be PALS Magazine September 2010 www.palsmagazine.com

The machine is made up of a compressor and pump that mix a gentle abrasion with suction to peel the outer skin layer (also know as the Stratum Corneum). This layer is home to many minor skin imperfections like fine wrinkle lines, blemishes and skin pigmentation caused by the sun. By removal or break up of the Stratum Corneum the body naturally replaces the lost skin cells with new and healthy ones. The skin's surface is now improved, the healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Also, without the Stratum Corneum acting as a barrier all those moisturisers and lotions we spend so much money on are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin. There are of course other facial treatments, such as the non-surgical facial which uses small currents of electricity on the facial muscles. These facials are also beneficial, however they do not tackle pigmentation, acne scars or age spots. At the Nail Bar & PALS Magazine September 2010 www.palsmagazine.com

26 PROSTATE FACTS Mr. P.N. Rao, M.B., Ch.M., F.R.C.S. (ed) What is a prostate gland and what does it do? Prostate is a small “wall-nut” size gland situated at the base of the bladder). The urinary pipe (urethra) passes through the middle of the prostate. Two separate glands (one on either side) called seminal vesicles are located behind the prostate. The tubes that carry sperms from the testicles (vas) join the ducts of seminal vesicles and that duct “called ejaculatory duct” passes through the prostate and opens into the urethra. The prostate gland is not essential for life. It produces enzymes which, along with the secretions of the seminal vesicles are essential for fertility. Seminal fluid is made up of secretions from seminal vesicles (60%), prostate (30%) and sperms from testicles (10%). During orgasm all these fluids enter the urethra in the prostate and are then ejaculated. What is a prostate problem? There is no single condition called “prostate problem”. Some urinary symptoms in men have nothing to do with prostate but are labelled as “prostate problem”. There are, however, three main conditions that affect the prostate. They are (1) Benign enlargement of the prostate (2) Cancer and (3) Prostatitis. In some men all these can coexist (particularly 1 & 2). Benign Prostate Enlargement Since prostate is a sexual organ essential for fertility, it is under the influence of testosterone, the male sex hormone. Under this hormone's influence, the prostate starts to increase in size from puberty. Most of this occurs in the part of the prostate that surrounds the urethra. The increase in size is variable occurring more in some men and less in others. Because the urethra goes through the centre of the prostate, this enlargement causes narrowing of the urethra. The restriction thus produced causes symptoms such as urinary frequency, having to get up in the night to pass urine, urgency (wanting to pass urine as soon as the urge develops) and poor urinary flow. Contrary to popular belief (even by some specialists), there is no correlation between the size of the prostate and the severity of symptoms as other factors play an important role. There is also no need at all to have any treatment just because the prostate is enlarged. Once it is established that there is no cancer and the enlargement of the prostate is not causing any complications (eg. such as urine infections, stones in the bladder), the only reason for intervention (either medical or surgical) is the degree of inconvenience, socially and personally the symptoms produce. PROSTATE CANCER Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.The presence of cancer in the prostate increases with age. Indeed, nearly 70% of men over the age of 80 harbour cancer in their prostate. Therefore, most men with prostate cancer do not die from the cancer (they die from other cause such as heart attack or stroke). For example, although nearly 25,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK (there are probably more cases that are not diagnosed) only 10,000 men die from it every year. It is very important to remember that not all men with prostate cancer need treatment.

How is prostate cancer diagnosed? The two most important diagnostic tools are (1) the good old method of examining the prostate and (2) PSA test, but neither of these two is diagnostic. If one of these is abnormal, your doctor may recommend a biopsy of prostate (obtaining a small sample of the prostate for examination under the microscope). Only 10% of the biopsies come back as showing cancer. In these situations, your doctor may recommend a repeat biopsy, monitoring the PSA or a recently introduced (but expensive) test called measuring PCA3 levels in the urine. What is PSA? PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a substance made by prostate and prostate only. It is essential for the optimal performance of the sperms and most of it goes into the ejaculate. However, a very tiny amount “leaks” into the blood and a simple blood test can determine the level. PSA is prostate specific and not prostate cancer specific (i.e. any problem in the prostate such as benign enlargement, infection and of course, cancer can increase the level of PSA in the blood). Prostate Infection (Prostatitis) There are two types of Prostatitis, Acute and Chronic. Acute Prostatitis, as the name implies, occurs quite rapidly with symptoms such as fever, chills and rigours, burning sensation in the urethra while passing urine, urinary frequency. Examination of urine may not necessarily show infection (as it is in the prostate and not in the bladder or the kidney). Acute Prostatitis responds well to antibiotics, although in some cases the antibiotics may need to be given in the hospital intravenously. It is also important to treat the condition with a long course of oral antibiotics (at least a month) to reduce the risk of relapse, as it is not uncommon for the symptoms to recur and in some cases, the antibiotics are given long-term, for a year or two. Chronic Prostatitis is a very frustrating condition to treat (for both the patients and the doctors). The symptoms consist of discomfort in the urethra while passing urine, pain/discomfort in the groin, testicles, behind the scrotum, lower part of the back, pain in the above areas during ejaculation, urinary frequency and some times erectile failure. The word Chronic Prostatitis is used somewhat loosely for the symptoms mentioned as in many cases there is no evidence of infection in the prostate at all. It is now recognised that in the absence of any evidence of infection in the prostate, the symptom complex should be called “chronic pelvic pain syndrome”.

The Goodness of Olive Oil

help to reduce the severity of arthritis and asthma. A study carried out by the British Journal of Nutrition indicated that a significant loss of body weight can be achieved by making only one change in eating habits, the substitution of olive oil for saturated fats. Two groups consumed the same amount of calories but one group ate more saturated than unsaturated fats. At the end of four weeks the group who ate the unsaturated fats were lighter. However we should remember that there is a great difference of opinion about oils and health. It is generally agreed that less fat is better and unsaturated fats are better than saturated ones. So if you're going to use oil in your diet, then olive oil is the one to choose but remember that from a calorie point of view olive oil is no better and no worse than any other oil so if you need to watch your weight then you also need to watch your calorie intake. There are 120 calories in a tablespoon of olive oil. Olive oil should always be stored in a cool dark cupboard and we should buy oil that is sold in darkly tinted bottles. Exposure to light and heat can turn the oil rancid. There are various grades of oil and extra virgin olive oil is produced from the first pressing of the olives. It's got the lightest flavor and contains the richest array of antioxidants. The next pressing of the olives produces virgin oil. If you see the word refined, it means that chemicals were used to extract the oil instead of pressing so these should be avoided. Pure olive oil is a combination of refined and virgin, so again this ought to be avoided. The words “cold pressed' on a bottle of olive oil is good as it means that heat was not used during its extraction. Of course we've all seen bottles of olive oil in the supermarkets and the huge range in prices. However there are some things that are worth the money and you get what you pay for. Olive oil is one of them! PALS Magazine September 2010 www.palsmagazine.com

News from Dipper Roger Gibson

Hello everyone, it's me Dipper the Guide Dog. I left off last time where I was nearing the end of my harness training and had a new 'Mum' to partner. Having finished my retraining to work on the right, there was yet another medical, which I passed. I was then taken to a house where my new mum lived, we went inside and the humans chatted about me and I was left to sniff around and inspect the place for a while. I was then taken in to the garden where I met Kandy, my mums retired Guide Dog. We took a few minutes, and a few sniffs around each other, before deciding we would get on alright as house mates. That's me on the left of the picture.

That’s how it went for a couple of weeks, harder and harder, more shops, people and distractions. The lessons taught the human half of the partnership how to care for the canine half, to groom me properly so I looked smart and didn’t smell, give me pills (YUK), what to do if I injure myself or eat something inappropriate. A fit and happy dog is a willing worker. Even though I was Mum’s fourth Guide Dog she was having a refresher course and learning new ideas. Well, that’s enough for now. See you next month. Dipper

I thought this was great, no work for the weekend so we co u l d ge t to know each other. Monday morning came and it was down to earth with a bang. We all got in to the car and drove to a conference centre near Watford. Dad had a cup of tea and Kandy told me I had better do as good a job as she had done – or else!! Then they said goodbye and left us Mum and I spent the rest of the day learning our way around the building and grounds. That evening after dinner we, and other new partnerships, were told to be in the 'student lounge' by 0900, having had breakfast, cleaned and groomed me, and taken me to 'spend' (a penny) ready to begin work. Just before going to bed mum took me to be 'busy', that's the cue to spend, we had a doggie 'portaloo' as a spending area, which was a wire mesh fence, with a gate, around some paving slabs. Mum had a bit of trouble undoing the gate so she put me inside and told me to get busy, she just held the gate shut and was not impressed when I 'watered' her feet, apparently her three previous Guide Dogs had been bitches and squatted where as I cock my leg, oops another lesson learnt by us both!! She quickly forgave me and we have both made sure it's not happened again. Next day we were up bright and early ready to begin work. I was fitted with my white harness, after Mum had assembled it. Now I was a professional Guide Dog, almost. We went by car to a housing estate and were given our instructions. Harness on, go straight ahead for X down kerbs (that’s when we go from pavement to road, (then turn left, or right as appropriate. We walked and worked for about an hour then it was back in the cars and to the centre for elevenses. We then had lessons until lunch, well Mum did, I snoozed. The afternoon was much the same but a different and busie area.

32 Vanishing Cyprus Developers’ Bonanza Andreas C Chrysafis Considered the “Father of Urban Planning”, Hippodamus of Miletos (498 BC – 408 BC) was the first city-planner to introduce the city grid plan: a quite revolutionary concept at its time! A visionary, physician, mathematician and a philosopher he had achieved an impeccable, if not, eccentric reputation and set forth a new trend of urban planning for cities and communities alike. Most nations, particularly North America, use the grid system extensively, recognizing that it is one of the most efficient urban planning systems to this day. Are today's city-planners, blessed with such visionary talents in the scale of Hippodamus? The public's perception affirms the view, that, the record of city-planners has certainly not been so successful… in fact it has been a complete letdown! A great number of projects across the island, especially in the area of Paphos, have turned out to be mishmash of ecologically inefficient concrete structures and certainly not in harmony with the environment.

Aphrodite Hills; and many other similar developments. No villas, no golf courses!

Because of non-transparency within the public sector, the “right to inform”, has also suffered due to the ongoing apathy of planners who refuse to respect citizens' opinions. All planning decisions are taken in private and kept away from public scrutiny, unless one is influential and has political cloud. Some of those influential groups are none other than Developers, Banks and their Solicitors.

Under those terms, the government relaxed the zoning laws, so developers can build their villa-resorts on cheap worthless land and to stock up their “Land Banks”. But the truth of the matter is, that, most of these exclusive projects are specifically designed and aimed for the privileged outsiders; Cypriot homebuyers are not part of that equation!

This privileged group has been given a free reign for years, and because of this cosy relationship the Cyprus property market due to shady deals - has received a bad reputation. In the UK for example, angry property owners have publicly protested to highlight the fraudulent behaviour of a number of developers. The European Union is now in the process of investigating the situation. But this multifaceted billion-Euro real-estate industry has friends in high places and powerful lobbies with a strong financial backing to grease the wheels and stop any opposition.

Golf is a wonderful sport, but in a country where water is so dangerously scarce, developing these golf courses with hundreds of villas complete with swimming pools does not make ecological sense, but sheer madness! Adding to the dilemma, these resorts will certainly cause a serious strain upon the local infrastructure, the water supply, hospitals, schools and other facilities. Yet, developers exonerate themselves and claim they have no social responsibility or accountability on such matters, but simply to build their resorts, sell them and move on!

One of those contentious practices involves the matter of Title Deeds. It has been estimated that over 130,000 property owners on the island do not have Deeds to their properties; certainly a disgraceful act indeed and we should name and shame any government who has failed to resolve the issue so far. It's easy to get into the habit of doing nothing, but to implement reforms that may jeopardise the cozy relationship between the government and powerful Land Development Groups. It takes courage and determination: the one thing that is badly missing!

Last year, Cyprus had to import water from Greece to keep the taps of the nation flowing thus exemplifying the need for a sustainable environmental policy. Over 1.2 billion poor people worldwide do not have access to clean water and building 14 extra golf courses for the super-rich, is absolutely a waste of valuable resources that Cyprus cannot really afford to squander. A single golf course can use as much as 6.500 cubic meters of water per day, enough to service hundreds of homes. For the maintenance of its well-trimmed grass, the amount of pesticides used, is estimated to be 12.0 kilos per acre, per year, in comparison to 1.2 kilos per acre used in agriculture. A small pool on the other hand, can hold as much as 70 cubic meters of water. There is also a greater danger looming; the possibility of contaminating the agriculture industry on spreading genetically modified organisms by using GMO grass.

Anxious to reduce its enormous deficit, a frantic government has rushed through the licensing of 14 new golf courses to bigname developers with no public consultation beforehand. As an integral part to the “golf deal”, these developers and their banking partners, would be allowed to build luxurious resorts the size of small cities like the Limni Mines project, which shall offer over 1000 homes for sale; the Ha Potami project; PALS Magazine September 2010 www.palsmagazine.com

33 These private holiday resorts (offering villas between 2.5 5.0M Euros) in close proximity to local towns or neighborhoods, could ultimately create a two-tier “them and us” society with unforeseeable social consequences. This kind of selective mass housing policy is not only discriminatory but also reminiscent to the old colonial days, were wealthy foreigners cocooned themselves in secured surroundings amongst their own, to enjoy their lavish lifestyle without any social consciousness towards the rest of the people. On the positive note, it is recognized that in some progressive countries, developers are held responsible for the extra financial burden imposed upon the community due to their massive projects or housing complexes. By law, developers must fulfill their financial responsibility and social obligation, if not, their building permits may well be revoked. If a similar fairminded policy is adopted on the island, it is one positive step towards a sustainable urban strategy and could help to improve communities, the infrastructure, recreational and health centers as well as the long-term social and ecological health of the nation. Most importantly, on such massive projects the government

could introduce a policy for mixed housing projects, which shall include a percentage of homes to be allocated for Cypriots at affordable prices. Developers and banks cannot simply build for outsiders by ignoring the housing needs of the country. There are many arguments, pro and against such a revolutionary concept, but ultimately, the long-term prosperity of the nation surpasses corporate financial gains. Bending the rules to assist the Land Development Groups to secure permits for their huge developments, such as golf courses with its housing projects, hotels and marinas is not the job of a government but it's a matter of respecting and following the Laws of the Land. Practicing favoritism unquestionably is a form of institutional corruption with all its implications. Such behaviour it's certainly the wrong way on resolving the nation's shortfalls. They're may be a sliver of hope in the horizon and that is resurrecting Hippodamus of Miletos! He can then show the government and planning departments the ways of a great visionary for a healthier ecosystem and the introduction of fairer social policies so desperately needed on this trapped little island… Andreas C Chrysafis (info@evandia.com)

Happy 5th Birthday Open Studios From a small core of organisers with a big dream of seeing the general public engage in an ongoing dialogue with artistic creators working across Cyprus, we have grown into an established annual event. This exciting concept has naturally spread to encompass three regions, from mountainside to seaside and town centres and is clearly just getting steam up for the long haul. It is our hope that studio visitors will continue to enjoy an ever expanding directory of artist and artisan disciplines while also becoming more familiar with the people and places of this special island. We thank our sponsors and advertisers, many of whom have supported us continually since our inception and we hope that you will use their services whenever possible. 35 News from Elegant Hair and Beauty Denise Caskey Gallinio Products Gallinio has developed a premium base of Vitamin C formulas for all skin types designed to provide the most advanced protection from environmental aging. The cutting edge of skin care research shows that aging skin is the result of more than just on the calendar. Exposure to environmental elements like sunlight, smoke and air pollution causes photo-aging in skin. Not only does this lead to the formation of lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, it can lead to more serious skin conditions including skin cancer. Tropical Vitamin C has now been show to provide up to eight times the skins natural protection from UV damage. Vitamin C protects your skin from the sun in ways that sunscreens can't. 37 Stop the Value of your Pension from Decreasing Charles Purdy

Many Brits in Cyprus unknowingly lose money when receiving their monthly pension payment. Often, a pension is paid in sterling at a UK (or off-shore) bank, exchanged to Euros and then sent to the pension holder's Cyprus bank account. Alternatively, pensions are paid into a Sterling account in their Cyprus bank account and then exchanged into Euros for use. By using the standard banking system, money saving options are overlooked, unnecessary charges are made and poor currency conversion rates are applied. In the end, the pension holder loses around £50 - £100 unnecessarily on every transfer. In some cases, the pension holder can lose much more. The solution is to use an international payment specialist rather than a bank.

Charles Purdy is a Director at Smart Currency Exchange Limited – the o n l y i n t e r n a t i o n a l p ay m e n t specialists in the UK that work specifically to help people moving money for property purchases or for regular payments such as mortgage or pension payments. To move money overseas or repatriate back t o t h e U K g o t o www.SmartCurrencyCyprus.com for further information - or simply call us locally on (00 357) 26 030 213.

The money saving option – fix the currency exchange rate Take Mr Benson, who retired to Cyprus in the middle of 2009. In July 2009, he contacted us, explained that his monthly pension amounted to £1,134 and wanted to know what options were available. After a chat, he decided to set up a regular payment with a fixed exchange rate of 1.16 for the full year. In July, he received €1,315.44 in his overseas bank account and will continue to do so every month for the next twelve months. To set up this facility, Mr Benson set a standing order from his bank to us and paid a small administration fee. If Mr Benson had decided against fixing a currency exchange rate, his monthly amount would have decreased along with the weakening sterling rate - and by October, his payment would have fallen to €1,179.36 - a 10% drop in value. Banks often fail to offer, or even to mention the option of fixing a currency exchange rate for use in the future. Avoid Charges Banks in the UK and Cyprus seem to charge for anything they can get away with. When working with an international payment specialist they will help to reduce and often eliminate most bank sending and receiving charges. Why pay a fee if you don't have to? Get good exchange rates International payment specialists offer exchange rates that beat the rates provided by the bank. Banks often set their buying and selling rates for currency in the morning – when you visit a branch, you'll see them hanging on the wall. Specialists, however, don't set the rates in advance but call into the market floor to get you the best rate possible at the time of transaction. Watching the value of your pension depreciate can be souldestroying. Receiving €1,180 rather than €1,315 can cause great anxiety. But both situations can easily be avoided when discussing matters with an international payment specialist.

38 A Guide to Funerals in Cyprus - Part 5 Kim Brown Last month was the fourth edition in a series covering funerals in Cyprus, where I outlined information about repatriation and the costs involved. Moving forward, this final edition will cover returning ashes to Cyprus, how funerals are conducted and some hints and tips you may not be aware of. If the repatriated body has been cremated, how do I get the ashes back to Cyprus if I want to? Well, this leads me on to quite an interesting story. A lady here in Cyprus repatriated her husband for cremation to the UK. All went according to plan, until she was told what it would cost to bring him back to Cyprus in a titanium casket. She decided that “her Fred” just wouldn't accept the price she had to pay to return him home, so she decided to take matters into her own hands. Unbeknown to anyone but her, she made the decision to pop his ashes into a bacofoil dish, put the lid on it and pack him in her suitcase! Well, “her Fred” arrived back in Cyprus according to her plan. How she managed it, no one really knows - but she did - because she said he would “turn in his grave” if she spent any more money on his funeral. This is probably not the way to do it, but it just goes to show what can happen…. What do I wear to a funeral in Cyprus? Normally the same as you would wear in the UK. However, in the summer months, it is perfectly acceptable to wear lighter clothing due to the heat. I have attended a summer funeral where the gentlemen wore short-sleeved shirts with a black tie and lightweight trousers. Ladies dress varies, but as a mark of respect, usually involves covering shoulders in church. It really is up to the individual to choose and of course respect the deceased wishes, who do sometimes request that no one is to wear black. At the funeral, can I choose the hymns? Of course you can. You can do exactly what you would do in the UK. You can ask someone to give a reading, ask for specific music to be played, organise a collection for charity (which is often preferred as flowers die so quickly particularly in the summer months) and so on. The Anglican Church will help arrange all of this for you so don't worry. ? Is there anything else I should know?

Yes, a couple of hints and tips that could prove useful to you:

? :Ensure you are registered here for Income Tax whether you pay it or not. There are numerous cases where a spouse dies and the remaining partner finds their pension is then suddenly taxed by the UK. You can register for tax after the event, but everything takes time – particularly here in Cyprus – and in the meantime, your income is reduced when you need it the most. ? Check your Cyprus bank account set up. Even if it is a joint account, it can still be frozen.

To avoid this, make sure if it is a joint account, it is set up “either to sign” not “both to sign”. If you are a couple, the best advice is to make an appointment to see your Bank Manager and ask what would happen to the account if one of you died. Then at least if you discover the bank account has been set up incorrectly, you can change it immediately. I know of many instances where the bank account has been frozen due to the account being set up incorrectly. The knock on effect of this is that the remaining partner is then left with no money available to them – at a time when they most need it. Can you imagine how awful that would be? I have also been told that when this has happened, the surviving partner has quickly withdrawn all the money from the account before telling the bank about the deceased - so they are not destitute. But really, all this can be avoided - just check your bank account set up and change it if it's wrong. At least if you ask the question, you can make any changes necessary before a problem could potentially arise. I do hope you found this information useful. And finally…. I am indebted to Tim Sabben-Clare and Keith Shonfield from The Anglican Church in Paphos, Helena at Othella Health Services in Nicosia and Iain Steel from Richard Steel and Partners in Winchester for all the immensely valuable information they have provided for this series.
