The Bega Valley Shire Council, the Cobargo Showground Land Manager, Cobargo Show Society, the Cobargo Co-operative and the Cobargo Public School for their continuing help and support. ABC for their media partnership. Bega District News for their ongoing support of this event run by the local community. ALL the volunteers who help put up, pack down, organise and manage the huge variety of tasks necessary to run the Festival and who have helped in so many ways with Festival promotion and management and whose lives have been impacted by “festival fever”. All our many supporters, sponsors, grant funding bodies particularly Bega Valley Shire Council, patrons, performers, caterers, stallholders, sound and lighting engineers who make this Festival such a wonderful experience.

Special Thanks and our very Best Wishes to those who are moving on: Graeme Fryer Over the past 20 years Graeme Fryer has been one of the key people who have nurtured the Festival and ensured its place on the national and international festival map. We don’t have enough space here to cover all of his roles over the years but there probably isn’t a job he hasn’t done. Graeme’s financial acumen, built over many decades as a successful manager, has been vital to keeping our volunteer-based Festival running and solvent. Dave Crowden A highly respected music teacher and musician in the Bega Valley, Dave has decided that 2019 will be his last as Artistic Director. Dave’s appreciation of a diverse range of music genres has ensured that the Festival has had a varied and engaging program of music, dance and spoken word in the years he has programmed the artistic content. He has used his extensive knowledge and contacts in the local music scene to promote musical development in the region and to support new and emerging artists throughout the South Coast. Reg Dew Known in the staging community world-wide as “Mr Fixit”, Reg has finally put away his tool kit after many years as head of what is perhaps the toughest Festival job - Construction and Staging. Reg’s amazing life as a rigger for some of the world’s top acts (Rolling Stones, U2, Elton John, Madonna, Metallica etc) will soon be recorded in book form. It will be a great read. Brian Myers Behind the scenes at every festival are many unacknowledged heroes. This year we would like to acknowledge Brian Myers. Brian has worked tirelessly for the Festival for many years, making sure the bar, the shop and the ticket office and other Festival business practices run smoothly. Hopefully this year, with some new hands on board to assist, Brian will actually get to see the Festival! Vic Grantham And finally thanks to Vic, who has also FOLK FES TIV RGO resigned from Committee work, but BA AL O A huge, C remains closely involved in the allheartfelt important Festival build. To all of those moving on, and to others who in recent years have stepped back nk from the intensity of Festival planning tha E LO E and delivery, we thank you for your VE TE OUR VOLUN efforts, value and appreciate what you have done and hope that you’ll continue to be involved with the Festival at whatever level you like. WELCOME

Acknowledgement of Country

The Yuin Folk Club acknowledges the Djirringanj people of the Yuin Tribal Nation who are the traditional custodians of this land where we live and where we gather to celebrate the Cobargo Folk Festival. Here in Cobargo we gather on Country of which members and Elders of the local Yuin community and their forebears have been custodians for many centuries and on which Aboriginal people have performed age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal. We acknowledge their living culture and unique role in the life of the region. Permission to use the name “Yuin” for our Club was given by Yuin Elder Auntie Eileen Morgan (dec), in consultation with Elders of the Yuin community, when we set up the Club.

Message from the Mayor - Bega Valley Shire Council

Just mention the words ‘Cobargo Folkie’ and watch people’s faces light up. The Bega Valley Shire Council is proud to be a long-term supporter of the Cobargo Folk Festival – a home-grown success story and a significant event in our region’s annual calendar. Now in its 24th year, the Festival showcases high quality music, dance, performance and spoken word acts, attracting performers, volunteers and audiences of all ages, from all over Australia and indeed, the world. In true folk tradition, festival-goers can participate in workshops, choirs and other activities and have a go at being creative themselves. Who knows what spark will be ignited in, perhaps, a future performer. Last year’s video initiative, The Cobargo Sessions, will be continued this year, supporting burgeoning film production companies and forming the basis of an important online Festival archive. We are proud of our local musical, artistic and creative talent and the Festival provides a great avenue for sharing and fostering that talent. Festival organisers, volunteers and sponsors have again produced an exciting and diverse line-up of performances and activities. I congratulate you all for your dedication, hard work and your contribution towards making the Bega Valley a vibrant and fun place to visit and live in. I wish the 2019 Cobargo Folk Festival every success!

Cr Kristy McBain From our Executive Director

Welcome to the 2019 Cobargo Folk Festival. Our focus this year has been on creating a fantastic program, the launch of our new video series The Cobargo Sessions and more site improvements. We continue to work closely with the Show Society and the Showground Land Manager to improve the site, not just for our Festival but for the whole Cobargo community. This year, your support of the Festival has enabled us to help fund the landscaping of more level camping areas, contribute funds to a new coolroom, by refrigeration for the bar, and an extension to the Narira shed. We are part of a great community and are very grateful for the support we receive from everyone in Cobargo and the surrounding region. You can thank them by shopping locally for supplies, arts and crafts, enjoying a coffee and a cake from the bakery or at one of the village cafes or buy a meal at the pub. Check out the new supermarket and deli in the main street run by Alf and Jane, who have been regulars at our Festival with their Cobargo ice cream. Pop in and say hi and let everyone know that you’re here for the Festival. Finally, I’d like to say a special thank you to Dave Crowden who is moving on from the role as Artistic Director. He leaves big shoes to fill.

Zena Armstrong

From Our Artistic Director

Welcome to the 24th annual and consecutive Cobargo Folk Festival. The Festival continues to grow in numbers attending and artistic quality. This year we have a large number of musicians coming from Scotland (Skerryvore), Ireland (Sharon Shannon), the USA (The Western Flyers, Richard Gilewitz, The Rayos, Melissa Crabtree), Canada (Scott Cook) and Germany (Mensch Monique!). It could also be the year of the singer/songwriter/storyteller, with a line up that includes Shane Howard, Jordie Lane, Jodi Martin, Melanie Horsnell, Luke O’Shea, Scott Cook and Michael Menager. There will be several special concerts over the weekend – Songwriters Concert on Friday evening, Indigenous Concert early Saturday afternoon, Fiddle Concert and Guitar Concert on Sunday afternoon. I’m particularly looking forward to the Under the Influence shows – the first one on Saturday night with John Shortis and Moya Simpson and the second on Sunday morning with John and Moya interviewing guests Shane Howard, Laura Bishop and Daniel Champagne. All in addition to our comprehensive dance program, workshops, Ideas from the Edge, youth and kid’s programs, blackboards and sessions. I have now been involved in the organisation of this Festival since 2009 as Festival Director then Artistic Director from 2014. I said then that it should be for five years, so this is my last year. I would like to thank the following for all their help and support during the past decade: Richard, Coral, Graeme, Alf, Reg, Jenny, Tim, Vic, Brian, Shirleyanne, Helen, Bob, John, Sam, Norma, Robert, Harry, Peter, Zena, Carolyn, Catherine, Dave, Mike, Carly.

Dave Crowden

From the Yuin Folk Club President

An important part of a managing a sustainable community festival is taking good care of all the volunteers who make it happen, avoiding volunteer burnout and ensuring that the Festival organisation is renewing itself for the future. This year, several of our longestserving volunteers, including Dave Crowden our Artistic Director for the last five years, have decided it’s time for some new blood in the organisation and are stepping aside from high level involvement. The Club wishes to acknowledge their contributions to the success of the Cobargo Folk Festival - please see Page 2 for further information. On page 1 and 2, you’ll see some new names of people who have stepped up as Organising Committee Members and Festival Team Leaders. If you see them about the Festival make them welcome. Without these amazing volunteers, a community festival such as ours just wouldn’t be possible. Enjoy the 2019 Festival - next year is our 25th anniversary. We plan to make it an absolute ripper.

FESTIVAL 2019 - OVERVIEW FESTIVAL 2019 We’ve a great line-up of entertainment scheduled for the weekend. In addition to a plethora of highly accomplished Australian talent, we welcome our overseas artists: Sharon Shannon with Susan O’Neill (Ireland); Skerryvore (Scotland); The Western Flyers (USA); Scott Cook and the She’ll Be Rights (Canada); Melissa Crabtree with Dayan Kai (USA); The Rayos (USA); Richard Gilewitz (USA) and Mensch Monique! (Germany). A BIG welcome to our overseas guests and to the many Australian performers (young and old) who will fill your days and nights with music, dance, education and numerous opportunities to participate in all the wonderful elements that make for a great folk festival. We’ve had to make a few changes to camping arrangements this year. The Arena camping areas (Acacia and Hakea) will no longer cater for large caravans and RVs that are over 7 metres in length (which includes the drawbar). These larger vehicles can still be placed in the Banksia, Waratah, Casuarina or Boronia camping areas - please follow instructions given to you by our helpful Camping and Gates volunteers. We’ve listened to feedback and will be trialling extra toilets in a camping area. These will be monitored to help us determine future requirements. Again, we’ve listened to feedback and have been able to arrange an ATM on site. This will be located in the Spooners Bar area.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS Tradition and recognition of those who helped grow the Cobargo Folk Festival are important parts of the Folk Music ethos. Each year we remember those people and also recognise the importance of the Yuin People to our Festival and to the region. Our artist biographies will tell you more about each act but below are some of the shows and presentations we think are special this year.

Jim Lay Memorial Songwriters Concert Fri 7pm Magpie

Remembering singer-songwriter and Cobargo stalwart, Jim Lay, this is the tenth memorial concert that gives Festival goers a look at some of the best of local, national and international experts in the craft of performing their own songs. Hosted by prolific Candelo songwriter and traveller, Melanie Horsnell, the show also features Canadian Scott Cook, making a welcome return to the area, Jodi Martin with her songs from the WA coastal desert region and multi-Tamworth Golden Guitar winner, Luke O’Shea.

Welcome to Country & Festival Opening. Sat 11.00 am Magpie Commemorating Eileen Morgan, our first Yuin Folk Club Patron who died in 2011, come along and be welcomed to Yuin Country by local performers, the Djaadjawan Dancers, Chelsy Atkins, Gabadoo, Robbie Bundle and the Stiff Gins.

Shortis and Simpson – Under the Influence - Sat 9:15pm Gulaga & Sun 11:00am Mumbulla Anyone who has been to previous Cobargo Festivals will know of the amazing talents of Canberra duo, John Shortis and Moya Simpson. This year they present Under the Influence - a tribute to the singers, songwriters and seminal moments that have inspired Shortis and Simpson, and informed their long careers in the music industry. It’s funny, touching, personal, and runs the gamut from hymns and Bulgarian choirs to musicals, Beatles, Dylan, Gracie Fields, Joan Baez, original songs and much more. On Sunday at 11:00am in the Mumbulla, Shortis and Simpson will also lead a fascinating glimpse into the influences of some of the other acts appearing the Festival (Shane Howard, Laura Bishop and Daniel Champagne) with songs and anecdotes - an eye-opener about what contributes to the music of a folk artist.

The Jim MacQuarrie Award

For the second year, the Yuin Folk Club is joining with Jim’s partner, Ros Marion, in presenting a $500 award to the best young act or solo performer in our youth venue, The Crossing. Last year’s winner was local talent, Judith Browne. Jim, who died in 2016, was a great friend of the Cobargo Festival, in good times and in bad, bringing some of the great talented performers from Canada and performing himself. He is much missed.

The Good Girl Song Project Fri 6pm & Sat 9:30pm Yuin Plus Workshop Sat 10am Nariria

We are delighted to be able to present an engaging and moving show that has been acclaimed around the country. In this theatrical song cycle, “Voyage”, four of Australia’s leading folk musicians recount the stories of the young women immigrants who voyaged from Gravesend to Sydney heading to a new life in Australia in the 1830s. The original songs are based on the research of Liz Rushen, drawn from eyewitness accounts and source material of the time, and bring a fresh female perspective to the experiences of these young women. Not to be missed.

Instrumental Concerts

Fiddle and guitar are, no doubt, the most popular instruments at folk festivals. Each year we present a special concert on each of these instruments – illustrating the range and musical variation they can achieve in the hands of experts.

FESTIVAL 2019 - OVERVIEW Fiddle Concert Sun 12:00 noon Gulaga Hosted by expert fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, Dave O’Neill, this year’s concert features Ewen Baker (a soulful fiddler who has played – among others - with Shane Howard, Archie Roach and Mary Black), Jacqui Bradley, Canberra-based multi-instrumentalist at the Festival with the Black Mountain String Band, Katie Glassman, an exponent of the “swing” style of playing and here with The Western Flyers and, one of the great Australian-Scottish Fiddlers and a Cobargo favourite, Bob McInnes.

Guitar Concert Sun 12:30pm Mumbulla Hosted by the Festival Artistic Director and highly regarded guitar teacher, Dave Crowden, this year we feature the finger-picking styles of Aussie Nick Charles, Richard Gilewitz from the United States, the unique style of Daniel Champagne (who was a student of Dave’s) and blues-influenced John Hudson, from the Shane Howard Band. Lots of guitar talk, as well as some blistering playing.

But We Protest Sun 4:30pm Gulaga

Protest songs have been the lifeblood of the folk music scene for many decades from the likes of Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez in the US and John Dengate, Warren Fahey, Dennis Kevans and Chris Kempster in Australia. What started off as a workshop idea has now expanded into a special presentation featuring Melissa Crabtree and Dayan Kai from the US and Margaret and Bob Fagan. Melissa and Dayan will sing and perform their own songs as well as the work of people like Pete Seeger and Odetta. Get along and sing the songs that will shake the established order. Now’s a good time to protest.

CD Launches

We are very lucky that artists are happy to launch their latest recordings at our Festival. This year we have three CD launches: Sat 6:16pm Yuin - Barry “Baz” Cooper is an accordion and keyboard wizard and has been a stalwart of the Australian music scene for decades, coming from a background playing light classical music and rock and roll and jazz in Europe. In Australia he moved into a playing more folk and world music, including Cajun, Zydeco, French Musette and Gypsy jazz. A frequent performer at festivals he has now done a CD reflecting his wide range of musical tastes and featuring guest appearances from some of the country’s best known folk and rock musicians. Reflecting his eclectic musical tastes, the CD is titled Mad Woman’s Breakfast. Sat 5pm The Yarnin’ - Bob and Margaret Fagan have been singing together for just over 50 years, as a duo and with the talented family band The Fagans, featuring folk superstars James and Kate. They are marking that half century of musical partnership with the release of Landmarks on the Journey. Those landmarks include homage to the writers they admire and the songs and stories they love. It includes one of the first songs Bob sang to Margaret some 50 years ago, The Bells of Rhymney, and a new song written by daughter Kate for the album, The Garden. They are delighted to be launching it here in Cobargo. Sat 3pm Mumbulla - Originating in the Deep South of the US, Blues music had its roots in the work songs, spirituals of Africa and some of the folk music from Europe. Local musician Corey Legge has been a regular at the Festival. Corey will be launching his brand new 9-track album Driving Out of Eden with a special one-off solo acoustic performance on Saturday 2nd March. The album was recorded in New Zealand with world-renowned producer/engineer Ben Edwards, who recently worked with Julia Jacklin and Marlon Williams. Corey recently received funding from the Yuin Folk Club and was a recipient of the CreateNSW ‘Young Regional Artist Scholarship’, which helped bring this project to life. It is fitting that the first show of the album launch tour is in the Bega Valley where Corey grew up. Don’t miss out on being the first to see the new show and buy the album!

PARTICIPATION Sessions - Spooners Bar

We’ve known quite a few people over the years who go along to folk festivals who never leave the session bar or tent. They just want to play with old and new friends, revisit old tunes and songs and play new ones. Have a look in the program for the specially led sessions to be held in Spooners, the bar dedicated to the late great Danny Spooner who played his last earthly festival in Cobargo in 2017. For players who want their tunes slow, Ray Mulligan runs a great session in the Bush Tradition on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9:00am. If you want beautiful tunes together with fast and furious, look out for the duelling concertinas of Jamie Molloy and Jo Cresswell, along with Bob McInnes and many more in the Celtic Tunes session on Sunday from 1:00pm. For those into Old Timey Music, have a look out for Peter Hisco and Wendy Jackson – aka Passionate Fools on Saturday from 2:00pm. Saturday also offers opportunities to join Lainey Keir and friends for an Acoustic Music Session sharing Lainey’s favourite tunes at 6:00pm, or Judy Pinder and friends for a Singing Session from 9:30pm.

Festival Choir - Shortis & Simpson

And as if they weren’t busy enough, John and Moya will direct the Festival choir, with two rehearsals in the Yuin venue on Saturday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 1pm and a performance in the Brolga on Sunday afternoon at 3:45pm. Loosen your larynx, oil your vocal chords and come along and sing.

Workshops

For a full schedule of workshops see pages 16 to 18. Workshops are a valued element of the Festival, giving people of all ages and abilities opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people, interact and step out of their comfort zones. Our varied program includes dance, yoga, Tai Chi, craft, forums and instrumental and voice classes. There’s something for everyone’s mind, body and spirit.

Blackboards

Our Blackboard venues offer anyone an opportunity to strut their stuff and perform in front of an audience. Singers, dancers, musicians, magicians, poets - whatever your passion, have a go! You can register from 4pm Friday and from 10am Saturday and Sunday at the Festival Shop and for the Saturday evening Blackboard in The Yarnin’ with Peter Hisco, register at the venue). Note: Preference will be given to non-booked performers.

SPOKEN WORD Poets’ Supper Fri 5:45pm The Yarnin’

A great way to start your Festival. Join our hosts Numbugga Dumb Bugger as they spruik the prose and cons of spoken word. Share your own poem or just observe those who do. Tim Metcalf is also launching his new book Numbugga Dumb Bugger featuring poems celebrating the characters and quirks of the Bega Shire.

We’d like everyone to have a great time. In addition to our Terms and Conditions of Entry, here are a few tips to make everyone’s experience enjoyable: * Our Festival is a family friendly event. Don’t be a boofhead! Intoxicated, disruptive and abusive behaviour will not be tolerated anywhere on the Festival grounds; * Know your limits and watch the booze - remember to eat, and drink plenty of water, especially in hot weather; * Illicit drugs are not permitted; * Please put your phone on “silent” during concerts; * Be mindful of our Showground site by respecting the environment. Pick up your waste, sort your rubbish and place in the bins provided; * Respect others and their property; * From 10pm onwards, noise in camping areas designated as quiet zones (Fowls) must be kept to a minimum. In other areas of the campsite, if you are requested to shut down late night sessions please do so; * Campers – please don’t get territorial about your pitch (like putting up barriers around your site) – it’s not your land – you are only there temporarily. PLEASE be respectful of Security and Volunteers who are there for your wellbeing and safety - without them we wouldn’t have a Festival.

Poets’ Breakfasts Sat & Sun 8:00am The Yarnin’

Future Resilience is about how we prepare ourselves and our community ahead of change. What is Bega Valley Shire Council doing to facilitate these innovative, and collaborative responses to the housing crisis. ARTIST BIOS Cobargo Sessions a Huge Hit Baz Cooper Fri 7:00pm Sat 10:00am Sat 6:15pm

Most small and medium sized folk festivals like ours struggle to pay performers as much as they are worth, when you take into account travel and other costs that most acts have to meet out of their own pockets. Many performers also can’t afford the huge costs of producing a high quality video of their work for use in applications and as show reels. Last year, with a grant from Destination New South Wales, the Yuin Folk Club allocated $10,000 for the production of a series of video recordings from the 2018 Cobargo Folk Festival. The primary aims were to: create an online video channel with strong content that would appeal to performers and supporters of Cobargo Folk Festival audience and be shared among friends; build an archive of quality content featuring performers at the Cobargo Folk Festival, to attract people to learn about the event, the diversity and quality of the acts at the event, and promote Cobargo; and, allow the Yuin Folk Club to demonstrate its active and practical support of the music community that provides the creative talent for the Festival. It was decided to name the video series “The Cobargo Sessions”, to identify them as originating from Cobargo. Two video production companies assisted the development and implementation of the project proposal: PegLeg Productions, Cudgewa, Vic and Crewcible, from Canberra. Both companies provided their services at a generous discount from normal commercial fees. Filming During the Festival, the team filmed around ten bands and performers and shot a Festival highlights reel. The bands/ performers were chosen by the Executive Director in consultation with the producers and others in the Festival organisation. They included local, national and international performers, were gender representative and ethnically diverse. You can find links to the videos and our YouTube channel via our Facebook page and website: www.cobargofolkfestival.com We hope to continue this project for many years to come so that the folk community can have a showcase that demonstrates the depth and quality of the music available at our Festival and beyond.

The Yarnin’ Yuin (Workshop) The Yarnin’ (CD Launch)

Baz has a long history of playing music of many genres in many parts of the world, from successful rock bands, to folk, blues and world music and has become something of a musical chameleon. All these influences come out in original songs and tunes and the music in Baz’s solo shows. Everything from piano boogie, to sparkling accordion features, to soulful ballads and songs that reveal his sense of humour - you never know what’s coming next! Don’t miss his CD launch - Mad Woman’s Breakfast.

Brolga Brolga

The simple act of singing can evoke joy and connection. It bridges the differences between people and creates a sense of unity. This is the core idea behind the Timor Leste Belun Malu Choirs Project, a musical cultural exchange program between the Bega Valley and the Natarbora region of Timor Leste where, in Tetun, Belun Malu means “friendship”. This Belun Malu Choir is from all over South East NSW from Kiah to Bermagui. Conducted by David Francis, it has been purposely formed to travel to, and perform in, Timor Leste in July 2019.

Making a return visit to Cobargo, The Black Mountain String Band is a celebration of string band music in all its forms. They combine fiddles and banjos along with guitar and double bass to draw from the well of tradition, while adding timeless sounding originals. Donal Baylor, Jacqueline Bradley, Matt Nightingale and Pablo Shopen - who’s father pioneered old time picking in Canberra with his band of the same name in the 1980s – cleverly arrange this wide range of material in a seamless presentation and will delight aficionados and new audiences alike.

Sat 11:00am Sat 4:30pm Sun 1:00pm

Charlie & Jensen is a musical conversation between acoustic artists Hunter Beasley and Luke Wright. They journey through genres, shifting from vocally charged original songs, to virtuosic instrumental tunes. They take a stripped-back, raw approach to music and performance mixing bluegrass, gypsy jazz, country and spontaneity. Their musical chemistry is evident in their debut album Whiskey Before Breakfast, a collection of single take recordings, unedited and undeniable.

Fusing the strong traditions of Blues, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation. The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills, he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” The Calgary Herald, Canada”. “Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in their thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper.” The Firefly Column, USA. Make sure you see him and make up your own mind.

The Michael Menager Trio was born at Cobargo Folk Festival in 2017. Sam Martin (guitar) and Michael Menager (vocals, guitar) signed up for the Festival as a duo. But at Sam’s last minute invitation, Dan Efraemson (violin) - from Malumba, a World Music band that Sam also plays in – jumped up on stage. And so it began. Michael’s lyrics cut along a philosophical edge, his rhythms and melodies cut across the spectrum of bluegrass, folk and blues, and his stories cut across the inner landscape of a poet and traveller. And Martin and Efraemson’s improvisations weave a framework for it all.

The Novellas In 2015 The Figmentz performed their Ska/Funk show at Cobargo and in 2017 they brought their Soul Show to the Festival. Wandella Wet Hopped Pale Ale

Wandella Wet Hopped Pale Ale is a special collaborative brew created for the Cobargo Folk Festival. Fresh Chinook and Cascade hops were hand-picked by the Cobargo Folk Festival and Capital Brewing Company teams in mid-February at the recently established Ryefield Hops farm in nearby Bemboka. Hops were transported to Capital’s Canberra brewhouse and added to the brew on the day of picking. Kegged only days before the Festival, this beer is as fresh as it gets! Much-lauded wet hopped beers can only be created at one time of year when the cones of the hop plant ripen. The timing of the Festival presented an amazing opportunity to work with a local hop grower to bring such a brew to fruition. The team at Capital are thrilled to debut this special beer at the Festival. The smooth, easy-drinking Pale Ale has a biscuity malt backbone with hints of caramel that give way to resinous aromas of grapefruit, pine and a hint of freshly cut grass - a highly desirable trademark of wet-hoped beers.
