THE INGALL’S RESIDENCE Their Story Chapter 1

Sometime during the early 1980’s, a famous local pioneering female architect named Lois Jane Hastings (The Hastings Group) set out to design a home plan for her brother-in-law on a spectacular Seattle city view building lot measuring only 3285 SF in size. After achieving plan approval from the city, her brother-in-law had a change of heart, and thus the lot and plans were sold in 1983. During that same year, The Reed Residence was constructed. Five years later, the Reeds sold the home to the current owners Richard and Marjorie Ingalls. Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls purchased the home to be closer to family and to resume creating and publishing Tour Maps for their beloved city Seattle (as well as other cities including Paris, Rio de Janiero, Rome, and Honolulu). They have enjoyed publishing this culturally enriching business for many ensuing years.

During the 1990’s, significant renovations were made to the home, including the addition of an interior atrium with a water feature and Koi pond, an elevator was installed to serve all 3 floors, and the addition of a library was made to house and display their many books collected from around the world. The Ingalls sought European inspiration for their kitchen remodel. They procured the expertise of the world’s famous Harrods for design and materials for their kitchen which they imported from London and had installed. The result is a fabulous one-of-akind exquisite and high-end Chef’s kitchen in quality, character, graced with Gaggenau dual oven built ins, stainless cabinetry and appliances Sub-Zero refrigerators with pullout freezer drawers for access ease. Once a meal is prepared– the ironwood deck invites one to enjoy their meal out of doors to enjoy the magnificent views of the Seattle city skyline, Puget Sound, and Space Needle. A nice evening stroll might lead one to enjoy Seacrest Beach park to stroll along the beach or from which to catch a water taxi for a 25 minute ride to downtown Seattle. There are shops and coffee houses along Harbor Avenue from which to enjoy the sights, and for bicycle enthusiasts— Alki Beach is but a few bike strokes away.

Architects around the world, and particularly women architects in Seattle and Washington, have long looked to L. Jane Hastings as an exemplar and professional leader -- and often the first to achieve key professional aspirations. She began her career studies in 1946 as the only female in her University of Washington architecture class of 200; and in 1953 became the eighth woman licensed as an architect in Washington since the state began licensing architects in 1923. Jane Hastings went on to become the principal of Washington’s oldest woman-owned architecture firm in 1959, an influential member of the International Union of Women Architects (UIFA) in its formative years, in 1975 the first woman president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Seattle Chapter, and in 1992 the first woman Chancellor of the AIA’s prestigious national honorary society, the College of Fellows.

IN THE MEDIA Editorial & Accolades

In 1968, The Seattle Times selected Hastings’s design for the Quam Residence as the Home of the Month annual award; and in 1973 it selected the Stevens Residence. Indeed, during the years 1962 to 1984, the Times featured 10 Hastingsdesigned residences as Homes of the Month; a total of 30 Hastings-designed residences appeared in Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer pictorial sections from 1963 to 1996. In 1971 the Karrow Residence took a national award from the AIA in conjunction with House & Home magazine. In 1977, Hastings’s design for the N. Johnston Residence in Laurelhurst (where the couple resided until 1995) received an Honor Award from AIA Seattle.

An archival assessment of the import of her architectural achievement notes: “Hastings’s concern for energy efficiency predates the energy crisis era of alarm and was evident when she was the architect for several solar homes and remodels.” Referring to Hastings’s numerous residential projects around the Northwest, the report continues, “She has dealt successfully with the environmental factors and severe climates of sites as diverse as Kodiak, Alaska, cascade ski areas, and beaches assailed by gale-force winds” (International Archive of Women in Architecture).
