I am pleased to share with you the 10th Anniversary Issue of our InCharge magazine! As we began to pull together our slate of cover honorees for this issue, a theme emerged – as it always does. The theme is LEGACIES. We’re all here doing the best work we can and some days we may stop and think, “What will I leave behind?”

No doubt one of the biggest legacies coming out of Memphis, Tennessee, is that of the great Elvis Presley. As I write this, we are celebrating his 88th birthday and people from around the world still flock to his Memphis home, Graceland, nearly 50 years after his death in 1977. Elvis’ legacy is of course the music he brought to us with over 500 million records sold worldwide. And just a note of encouragement, if you haven’t been to Graceland recently – go! It’s definitely worth the trip.

Just ask our five cover honorees who met there recently to be photographed in Elvis’ wardrobe exhibit. Each of these five honorees has a legacy of their own which you will read about in the pages that follow. They are seasoned healthcare executives whose legacy includes the contribution each has made right here in Memphis. I am honored to introduce you to them: Dr. Peter Buckley, the new (well he’s been on the job for a year) chancellor of UTHSC is just a delightful guy. Hailing from Dublin, he’s bringing a whole new vibrant energy to our Memphis medical college campus. If you haven’t met him – make a point to do so – you’re in for a treat.

David Elliott has been on the scene in Memphis healthcare for over a quarter of a century! He has been a faithful servant to Baptist Memorial Healthcare Corporation and serves as their Vice President of Managed Care Services and CEO of Baptist Health Services. When I entered the picture in 2008 as the new publisher of Memphis Medical News and was trying to meet key market players, David took the time to meet with me and he was very kind and helpful. To me it is a hallmark of a good leader who takes time to help someone else just getting started. I am happy to honor him in this issue.

There may be only one greater Memphis legacy than Elvis, and that is the legacy that Danny Thomas brought to us in 1962 with the establishment of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. For a while now, I’ve had my eye on Dr. Carlos Rodriguez -Galindo, director of St. Jude Global. He travels a lot, as you can imagine, and I’ve tried to interview him on more than one occasion. I’m so pleased that he was able to be a part of this 10th Anniversary issue! He is proof positive that Danny Thomas’ mission – to let no child die in the dawn of life – is being carried out to this day on a global scale.

Dr. Hollis Halford III, is also a living legend in Memphis healthcare. He’s never been my physician but I can tell you after spending a little time with him at Graceland – he has a wonderful bedside manner. Genuine kindness and compassion are two characteristics that are hard to fake. But what may be the most interesting to you is that he was just involved in some serious negotiations with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee and you’re not going to want to miss his comments about that in our cover story.

Special thanks to Jack Soden and Alicia Dean at Graceland for the hospitality they extended us during our InCharge photo shoot. In addition, Memphis Medical News would like to extend our sincere condolences to Graceland and the family of Lisa Marie Presley whose untimely death occurred during the production of this magazine.

But don’t turn the page yet, because we have to talk about Linda Hughlett, Chief Nursing Officer of Regional One Health. She also has an extraordinary personality and a rich career in nursing and midwifery. Linda is the kind of nurse you want to show up at your bedside –whether you are sick or about to deliver a baby. And it makes me happy for all the nurses she is leading in her role at Regional One today. If one ounce of her persona rubs off on them, they will be better nurses.

Five extraordinary people, and many pages to follow of the people who are leading Memphis healthcare today. On a personal note, this is my legacy. To bring them and their stories to you in every issue. And while InCharge is 10 years old, Memphis Medical News is over 20 years old. I was hired in 2008 to “revive” this market as the publisher before me was sick and unable. I’m proud of my work so far and I look forward to serving the Memphis medical community in 2023! Please keep in touch and may you all have a Happy & Healthy New Year!
