BEERS& CHEERS Old Bust Head Brewing Company
A guy walks into Vint Hill with the dream of opening a pub… three and a half years later with two additional business partners, an excellent brewery business plan and a lot of hard work, Old Bust Head Brewing Company is officially serving Fauquier County and the surrounding area. Brew Master Charles Kling along with locals Ike and Julie Broaddus have opened up one of the larger breweries in Virginia. “Somewhere along the way, I went to Julie and told her this was what I wanted to do in the next phase of our lives,” Broaddus explained. “It took her few months to get into the plan and once she agreed we made a go of it.” It took a steady year of working together to refine the original plan and find the perfect space to open the brew house. “We knew we wanted to be in Fauquier County,” Broaddus mentioned. “We looked everywhere, Warrenton, Vint Hill, New Baltimore and eventually outside of Fauquier with no luck.” Broaddus reached out to Carter Wiley with Vint Hill Economic Authority and asked for his recommendation after their diligent search for a location was coming up short. Interestingly enough, Wiley brought the dream of the brewery back to Vint Hill. A defense contractor and longterm tenant, who rented the space for ten years, was leaving and he suggested taking a look at the space with an open mind.

“I brought Julie and Charlie over and we looked at these buildings,” Broaddus explained. “Together we said this really could work.” An offer was placed and within three months the offer was accepted - that has almost been a year ago. Immediately they started purchasing equipment and worked to get things started. “I never thought I’d be working at a brew company - never,” Broaddus laughed. “We would have never gone into brewing without the right partner, because I’ve only been a craft beer liker for 20 years.” Kling has a very interesting history and his experiences have molded him into a superb brewer. Being raised in the Ozarks he learned early on how to make moonshine and it was that craftsmanship

that even today he still can’t shake. He moved on from the Ozarks to go to college but wound up making wines and eventually beers. Broaddus said, “Charlie is one of the best brewers in the world.” He completed a beer certificate program and a few internships. From there he progressed to Abita Brewing Company in Louisiana. Kling eventually worked his way up to one of the three Head Brewers. His interest in craftsmanship and independence would take him to Arkansas and to a smaller place called Diamond Bear Brewing Company. In his four years there he developed Diamond Bears portfolio – his English Pale Ale was the best in the world at the World Cup in 2004 and again in 2006. It’s safe to say he knows his craft very well. Kling and his family relocated to the area a few years ago for his wife’s job. Kling worked initially at the U.S. Patent Office but he wouldn’t be able to suppress his desire to create for long. It was then that Kling met Broaddus at Vint Hill inquiring about a potential pub. Fast forward almost four years and Old Bust Head is now bricks and mortar. Broaddus mentioned that Old Bust Head will start out as a very large microbrewery. Compared to other infantile breweries they are massive in size, Broaddus is confident in Kling’s ability to make award-winning beers and believes that they will grow into the space accordingly. “We wanted a business that was Fauquier-based and where we could somehow leverage our love for farmland and preservation into the business,” Broaddus mentioned. “Julie especially was interested in getting to know the history of the area as well.” The business provided M ay 2014
them the opportunity to incorporate all of those things into one. The brewery has already connected with local farmers to provide them with spent grain for their livestock. Broaddus expressed hope in building better connections with farmers and would love to work with local sources for barley and hops. “As soon as we can we’d really like to develop an all Fauquier beer,” he said. “It would be really, really neat!” The name Old Bust Head Brewing Company comes from a few old anecdotes which keeps this a truly Fauquier County inspired business. In researching Old Bust Head Road, the current location of the Broaddus property they found the inital land grant from the original owners of the property that totalled over 5,000 acres. The Norris family (the original owners) had a couple commercial buildings that included a post office, blacksmith shop and wheelwright shop. At the time this area was known as the Town of Norris located on what is now called Old Bust Head Road. “We asked a few old timers and they mentioned that the old wheelwright shop was transformed into a tavern,” Broaddus explained. “One story said that the stuff they were selling there was so rough that in the morning you would wake up with a busted head, another saying people would get drunk and ride their horses home and fall off and bust their head.” The third story that they heard several times which was equally as colorful was that the tavern would hold drunken fights on Saturdays – essentially giving the participants busted heads. “I don’t know which story it is but they are all great,” Broaddus smiled.
Eventually, the tavern became known as Bust Head, then the area turned into Bust Head Corner, then Bust Head Road and then finally due to its age it settled as Old Bust Head Road. “We thought we needed to somehow honor that history,” Broaddus explained. “So Old Bust Head lives on!” The brewery released their first tastings to the public in early February, just in time for the Super Bowl. Available for tasting and purchasing is their flagship brew Bust Head – English Pale Ale as well as their Wild Cat Mountain IPA. Broaddus mentioned that they are looking forward to distributing their bottles to local grocery stores but is really excited to see their taps at restaurants. “The best way to drink any beer is on tap, especially ours,” Broaddus smiled. Two more releases aren’t far behind including the Chinquapin Chestnut Porter and a Czech Pilsner called Chukker. Their Tap Room is under construction and is scheduled to be completed and open in April just in time for the spring. In the mean time, they’ll be open on the weekends to continue sharing their Fauquier brewed beers. Old Bust Head Brewing Company is located at 7134 Lineweaver Road at Vint Hill Farms near the Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts. They hold regular office hours during the week and on the weekends throughout March will be open for tastings, tours, growlers and souvenirs. The best way to keep in touch with them is through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay on top of their available weekend hours and upcoming events. Dark Horse Theatre Company Embraces New Home
he Theatre on the Green at Vint Hill will welcome the troupe from the newly relocated Dark Horse Theatre Company this month. This former northern Virginia theater company has been providing highlevel performances in Adams Morgan at the D.C. Art Center since 2009. Each performance calls together a collection of actors, directors, designers, writers, visual artists and specialists to develop engaging theatrical work. Lucky for Fauquier County, Dark Horse Theatre Company is now calling Warrenton home and will offer the same level of expertise and exciting opportunities. “One of our missions is to keep professional theater affordable for everyone,” said founder Natasha Parnian. “I wanted to have all different kinds of artists involved in these productions.” Feeling a little lost in the crowd of boutique theater groups, Parnian longed for a home within a community that would embrace an arts-based organization. Personally having just relocated to Warrenton with her husband, she began looking for a new base for the company, which would need to include a performance space. Her search efforts brought her to Vint Hill where she fell in love with the nostalgic theater and its proximity to Northern Virginia. “I’ve talked to so many people just getting a feel for the arts community out here and there is such a rich artistic appreciation,” Parnian mentioned. “They deserve a great 8

group of performing artists; quality and professional.” Dark Horse utilizes a studio theater philosophy meaning each show is developed under a workshop atmosphere. Parnian, who is also the Managing Artistic Director, explained that each production will evolve from the first reading through closing night which allows for growth and development. She said that she works with the actors and places emphasis on table work early in the process as well as homework and research. With such a thorough operation, they have an average production time of four months from casting to opening night. This helps ensure the artistry for each show.
“We select the top actors we can get for each part,” Parnian began to explain. “We spend a month doing table work by analyzing the script and really understanding what is going on before the actors even go on their feet. They are to know why they are doing something physically before they present.” The new space will allow Dark Horse to offer our community accessible and affordable shows, an idea that Parnian finds extremely important. Traditionally, professional performances can cost about $60 per ticket but they will be offering them at $20. unbridled continued from page 8 purchase to closing curtain and can expect provocative productions that include classical, contemporary and original works. “We do a new play every year and the playwright this time is local and it’s set locally which is really neat,” Parnian explained. “The next show we are doing is a comedy and then we are going to do a classic and kind of see what sticks. Evaluate and adjust, adjust, adjust - because I want people to come see us.” The May performance, Sunday’s Child, is a world premier. The playwright Jennifer S. Jones (located in Alexandria) wrote this play with a dollhouse view into a sensationalized family on television that has a child missing. “It’s every parents worst nightmare. Two years ago the Blakemore’s four year old son Toby disappeared from their backyard. Now it is Christmas and they have gathered again to try to make sense of what happened. A play about the power of family and the length we will go to protect those we love, Sunday’s Child ask the question: In a similar situation, what would you do? These families have press coverage on them day and night and you experience how their family has been broken apart.”
A couple of laughs front row before the real work begins.
Although the setting is stressful and highly emotional the play also offers some very light and funny moments. Parnian thinks that it will really make the audience question whether they can laugh or remain solemn. She hopes that by opening with a play that is essentially local she will capture the attention of those in the community with an appreciation or interest in the arts. “I really hope people give us a chance,” Parnian said. In addition to entertainment Parnian is excited to offer educational opportunities to the community. They’ve partnered with Fauquier County Parks and Recreation to offer acting classes for children (ages 7-12), teens (ages 13-17) and adults. “We are an education theater company,” Parnian stated. “If someone comes in and says ‘I want to learn sound design’ we will teach them, get them up and running and they will be doing sound for the next show. It’s important to us – how else are people going to learn?” Dark Horse is already becoming attuned to the lifestyle and the people in the area. They are showing promising signs of making our community richer with their offerings. “I’m looking forward to future shows and getting the community more involved. I don’t want us to be an untouchable professional theater - that

sounds scary - I want us to be inclusive and welcoming.” Dark Horse Theatre Company will present Sunday’s Child from May 23, 2014 through June 7, 2014 at The Theatre on the Green at Vint Hill. Tickets are $20 but with a student, senior or military i.d. they are $15. Make sure to check the calendar as Saturday performances will feature playwright Jennifer S. Jones, she will be available for post show talkback. Here audiences can ask questions and get further insight into the play. &Love It This time I am going to offer you a different angle on my yearly rant against ordering from plant catalogs. I really do love it when they all start showing up in my mailbox. Pages and pages of beautiful, healthy and perfect growing things: flowers and shrubs and vegetables and trees, promising me that there will be another growing season. I like discovering what’s new, what the hybridizers have been working on, what I might want to look for and plant this year. Then I get frustrated and angry. Sometimes the pictures are not accurate in their depiction of colors or bloom mass. Sometimes the descriptions are so inaccurate that I have to check the plant name again to make sure I am reading the right one. Sometimes they leave out important information like how much deer enjoy eating a particular plant, or how one plant might cover your whole garden in two years, or how only an expert with lots of free time could possibly get this plant to establish and grow. That is why I read the catalogs but I buy my plants at our local garden stores. I have researched three favorites and I will share with you why I love them.
The Farm at Broad Run 12
Meadows Farms is the oldest and has the most locations. In 1960, Farmer Meadows was a High School Coach making summer money by selling tomatoes door to door out of a red wagon. With hard work, a good product and good prices, he grew from the wagon to a roadside market. By the mid 60’s he added plants to the vegetables. In 1972 he opened the first full time nursery in
by Lynn Galluzzo
Sterling, now there are 22 locations including a landscaping division and an imaginative golf course. Seasonally, Meadows Farms employs about 2,500 people with 600 to 700 year round, full time jobs. When I asked Ron Meadows what he thought made Meadows Farms special he said, “Selection, quality and price.” I agree. I shop at a few locations, thankfully Prince William County has two locations (Manassas and Woodbridge), and I can usually find everything on my list or a good substitute. It is a manageable size, well laid out and someone is always available to push a cart heavy with plants and help me load my truck. The prices are fair and their specials are good. My guilty pleasure at this Meadows location is walking through the Stone Center. They have rocks that I never knew existed. There are decorative rocks in all sorts of colors and sizes, rock stepping stones in a variety of colors, giant boulders, river rock and manufactured pavers. I can select the perfect piece for my purpose, one or several, pay for it, and get help loading. When I lived in Centreville I went to the Merrifields location on 29 as often as possible. When we moved to Haymarket that location was too far away to be time efficient for my business. You can only imagine my joy when I learned they were opening in Gainesville. I was so excited that I started going there when it was just a trailer, a few plants and some bags buy local continued on page 14

of mulch. It has grown into such an amazing place. I was so overwhelmed on my first visit that I left with just one little annual. I was like Robin Williams in the movie Moscow On Hudson when he goes to an American supermarket for the first time and is paralyzed by choice. All of this began April 9, 1971 when Bob Warhurst and Buddy Williams opened the Gallows Road store on a half acre of land. They grew, bought, grew, rented, grew and bought some more until that original store occupies over 9 acres in the heart of Fairfax. In the late 80’s, early 90’s they expanded to the store near Centreville on Route 29 and then recently to the Gainesville store on Wellington Road. They have a wide variety of plant material and sales staff who know and love plants. Kevin Warhurst told me that quality is so important to them that their buyers go to growers all over the country and personally tag items for Merrifields. One of the things that I value the most about Merrifields is the Help Desk. I have asked questions about pruning and weed control. I have brought in cuttings for identification and diseased cuttings for analysis. They never make me feel stupid and I always leave with an answer or solution that works. That to me is invaluable. They also offer free seminars on an interesting variety of topics. Merrifields boosts the region’s economy by employing 700 people in season and 320 year round.
In contrast to these big, multi location garden stores, The Farm at Broad Run is as small and personal as you can get. The single, retail location on Route 55 is like Cheers – everybody knows your name. In 1992 the owner, Bill Dewitt, started with a landscape company. By 1998 he had expanded to wholesale plant sales. In 2007 The Farm opened its retail store and in 2008 welcomed Thomas Buckley Jr. who became the manager. Buckley has worked to create a well organized, well stocked, friendly and fun place to visit. The homegrown produce, eggs and organic meats are so popular that sometimes I have to put my name on a waitlist. My family counts on a “Farm Turkey” for Thanksgiving every year. The Pavilion is a popular party rental for events ranging from business parties to weddings. Families enjoy stopping by to visit because they can feed the farm animals while stocking up on plants. Birthday parties and school classes are all given fun projects and special attention. For a small location the plant choices are varied and interesting. They are well cared for and the prices are great. Thomas and his staff have years of experience with plants and are very helpful with suggestions of what would be the right thing for the right place. Two new employees have come out of retirement from Meadowlark Gardens. Thomas says future plans include reestablishing the wholesale business, offering more hardscape installation, increasing
Merrifield Garden Center
the use of the pavilion and offering monthly classes. Right now The Farm at Broad Run has 300 seasonal workers and 30 year round people and it sounds like that will be increasing. I love and frequent all three of these places. Their unique differences make each one special to me and a destination for specific reasons. They all have wonderful staff that try very hard to help me with anything I need. I have fantasized about quitting the pressures of running The Garden Lady and working at each of them although I strongly suspect I would never bring home a paycheck. How could I spend all day working among all of those great plants and not want to take all of them home? Although I am usually on a mission to find plants for one or more jobs I almost always spend additional time walking around, seeing what is new, what is blooming, and learning more by reading descriptions and talking with sales people. When I do select plants I enjoy and value the process of choosing my own instead of having a faceless catalog worker make the choice for me. Buy local. Its way more fun and the plants will be stronger, cheaper and far more likely to thrive in our area. A short note on the benefits of the cold snowy winter – it has killed or seriously depleted several species of harmful bugs and nourished many of our native trees that struggled with the warmer winters.
Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz.

Effee’s
FROZEN FAVORITES
A cheerful pop of color catches commuters and passersby while cruising down Route 29 near New Baltimore, Effee’s Frozen Favorites has been a destination as well as a much-needed rest stop when on the road. Long time friends Mike and Leslie Farris and Darryl and Roz Eadi opened the business in the spring of 2003 with a quaint trailer. Now celebrating their eleventh season, Effee’s has a beautiful building with a porch, stools and surrounding picnic tables with umbrellas and benches. Their employees are bubbly, their customers are loyal and, some would argue, the best ice cream around. “I think what makes us special is that we have this country feel,” Leslie mentioned. “People come on the weekends and open their tailgates, kids are chasing fireflies and playing in the creek. We have a backyard quality.” Pair the casual environment of a backyard with creamy, delightful soft-serve ice cream and you’ve got a perfect afternoon. Effee’s carries three traditional flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry as well as one flavor of the week. The flavor of the week varies from fruity, to savory, to decadent. Options like Black Raspberry, Blueberry & Lemon, Butter Pecan, Salted Caramel, Cappuccino and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut are all popular features. “Black Raspberry is number one; it’s always been a favorite,” Mark said.
“ We do our specials of the week based on the flavor of the week like the Raspberry Truffle and that’s to die for!” While four flavors might not sound like an expansive menu, your opportunities for a sweet treat are abundant. For those who enjoy simplicity, cones and cups are the way to go. Get your ice cream topped with a combination of candy bars, peanuts, gummi bears, brownie bites, toasted coconut or nerds. Many more toppings are available like dips and sprinkles to personalize your favorite creation. “We customize a lot for people,” Leslie explained. “We always ask if the customer wants ‘traditional’ or, if they need it customized, we’ll do that for them,” Roz added. Grab a specialty shake like the Marshmallow Crispy Treat, Banana Pudding, S’More or Capt’n Crunch. They offer nineteen sundae choices with classics like Hot Fudge and Hot Caramel – all are topped with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. Their everpopular Famous Brownie Sundae is a customer favorite as well as the Funnel Cake Sundae. In addition they have an Iceberg which is a half shake and half sundae, an Avalanche with toppings mixed directly into the ice cream, Floats like Root Beer, Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite, and Penguin Pies – Effee’s take on ice cream sandwiches! Effee’s Frozen Favorites is located
The old and new Effee’s at 5051 Lee Highway sandwiched in between Spitony’s Pizza and Northside 29 Restaurant. They are open seven days a week starting Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 10:00pm and Sunday 11:00am to 9:00pm. Find them on Facebook to keep up with the flavor of the week, other tasty creations and fun happenings.

Lifting Your Spirits
THE WINERY AT LA GRANGE Oh the Taste of a Local Wine! If you’re looking for a nice place to sit and relax or take the family to that’s local, look no further than The Winery at La Grange. Located on Antioch Road, it sits on an old estate. Local winemaker Chris Pearmund started the winery in 2005, planted vines and built a new facility behind the existing house. The result is an estate house and surrounding grounds where visitors can come to relax and taste local wines. The 2012 purchase by a Hong Kong based corporation injected new capital to update and repair the facilities. Original General Manager, Fletcher Henderson, returned as winemaker with help from Doug Fabbioli. Henderson notes that the winery has grown and thrived under the new owners, enabling the planting of additional acreage of Petite Verdot and Petite Mensang to supplement the Cabernet Sauvignon already planted.
The wines reflect Henderson’s goal of creating a softer European style. He admits that the higher quality of local grapes means a better wine that is unique to Virginia. Fletcher’s Chardonnay, for example, does not have any buttery finish, making it a perfect complement for shellfish, boiled shrimp, crab and omelets. Viognier and Cuvee Blanc provide softer, sweeter tastes, which are great for warm evenings on the patio or with lighter dishes. Red wines include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Virginia’s own Norton, Tannat, Meritage and the acclaimed General’s Battlefield Red. To finish off your tasting, try the port-style Snort with dark chocolate. Visitors are encouraged to come and stay. Picnic baskets, children and dogs are welcome. Summers feature sangrias and the winter months feature mulled cider spiked with wine.
