Cranberry White Chocolate Chip Cookies BY ROBERT MCDERMID PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOK TIME: 10 MINUTES

½ cup butter, softened (1 stick)

3. Add the flours,

baking soda, and salt, and mix until just combined, about 1 minute.

2 tablespoons milk

4. Add the cranberries

½ cup light brown sugar ½ cup sugar

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour ¾ cup bread flour* 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup white chocolate chips 1 cup dried cranberries

1. In the bowl of a

stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on low speed until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the sugars and mix on medium-high speed until creamed and well combined, about 2-3 minutes. Stop and scrape down the sides of your bowl.

2. Add the egg, milk,

and vanilla and beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 4-5 minutes. Stop and scrape the sides of the bowl.

and white chocolate chips and mix until just combined, or you can fold them in by hand. Transfer dough to an airtight container for at least 3 hours. The dough can be stored for up to 5 days.

5. Preheat your oven

to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. Drop a little less

than ¼ cup of dough onto your baking sheet 2 inches apart.

7. Bake for 8-10

minutes, or until pale golden and the edges have just set. For a crunchier cookie, bake an extra 1-2 minutes.

8. Allow cookies to cool for about 10 minutes before removing them from the baking sheet. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

*you can use solely all-purpose flour, but using part bread flour gives a greater rise and results in a chewier cookie.

Haymarket Christmases of Years Past The Haymarket Museum takes a look back at

or the last three years, the Haymarket Museum has exhibited holiday displays to show the many different ways in which Haymarket residents have celebrated this festive season over the past 200 years. Visitors to the museum have already experienced Haymarket Christmases in 1825, 1850, and 1945; this year, the museum will celebrate a year that remains in living memory for many of us, and that took place in a cultural environment much like that of the present: 1975. Though Haymarket’s character has remained much the same for the duration of its history, ideas and traditions from the larger world have often been reflected in the way that its residents celebrate the holidays. The 1825 exhibit introduced us to colonial games and recipes that had been carried here from England, while 1850 — the first year the Museum exhibit had a Christmas tree — showed the influences of new waves of people who enriched our society and diversified our traditions. 1945 showed us Haymarket on the home front of World War II, and shared how residents here in America worked to support the soldiers fighting overseas.

The years of the 1970s, much like the America of today, were exhausted by long military conflict, wars of ideas at home and abroad, sensational politics, and civil unrest. They swung from the scandal of the Watergate coverup and disillusionment from the subsequent trials to the patriotism and pride that characterized the nation’s bicentennial year. They forced Americans to see themselves at their best and at their worst, and to re-examine how, as the Founding Fathers wrote in the Constitution’s preamble, “to form a more perfect union.” This year’s holiday exhibit is very timely in this respect. Perhaps “Christmas in 1975: A Haymarket Holiday” will remind us that there

is still much to do. But first, dust off your platform shoes! Echoes of current events are always amplified during the holiday season; it is when we gather together to exchange ideas, catch up with our loved ones, and show off the newest trends. As far as holiday cooking is concerned, the 1970s were a time unlike any that Haymarket had seen before. Though Saigon had fallen in the spring of 1975 and the troops were coming home, the prolonged deployment of American soldiers to Vietnam led to a resurgence of cooking ingredients and techniques that have since become infamous. These familiar standbys were enhanced by exotic ingredients that

had not been available during the ration programs of World War II. Many of the more creative recipes consisted of preserved vegetables and meats (canned, tinned, and frozen) encased in mayonnaise, gelatin, or aspic. The dishes were finished in a festive mold and decorated with as much color and exotic accompaniment as possible, with mixed results. Embodying all of these qualities was the “Watergate Salad.” Created by General Foods as a marketing vehicle for its products, the salad is made with pistachio pudding, canned pineapple, whipped topping, and marshmallows chilled together and served out of a decorative mold.

Originally styled the “Pistachio Pineapple Delight,” the salad eventually assumed the name of that time’s defining political event. The decade’s later years brought a new emphasis on fresh ingredients, but in such a traditional environment as the holiday season the old favorites tended to linger. Holiday recipes from the era included such notorious classics as the Noel Glazed Ham, the Glazed Potato Ring, General Foods’ Vegetable and Tuna Jell-O Wreath, Cranberry Candles, and Bon Appetit Magazine’s Chicken in a Pineapple. Some less startling holiday standards included fondues, Swedish meatballs, and lots of mousses.

Stretch Armstrong was a popular toy of the 70s, notorious for its gel filling that was exposed if the toy was damaged.

The town holiday celebration on Saturday, December 2 will kick off with performances from local students, dance groups, and musicians in front of town hall. S’mores kits will be sold to benefit the Serve Our Willing Warriors (SOWW) project, a local nonprofit that serves wounded and ill soldiers and their families. Town restaurants will have delicious menu items for purchase in our heated dining tent. A bonfire, cookie decoration station, the Reindeer Snack Shop, craft station, and holiday music will make this a day to remember! A special treat will be the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. After parading down Washington Street, they will visit with families in the Museum courtyard. As the sun goes down, the town tree will be lit at 5:30 p.m. to start the holiday season.

Fortunately, the holiday seasons of the 1970s were filled with wonderful new toys and technology, which happily eclipsed many of the more troubling recipes served at holiday dinners. Improved manufacturing and the incorporation of man-made compounds led to an abundance of relatively inexpensive, durable toys. Some of these were adaptations of older favorites, such as the newly improved skateboard and plastic dollhouses like the popular Weebles play sets. Others, like Nerf Balls and Stretch Armstrong, were the first of their kind. The 1970s also introduced the world to the first generations of arcade video games, such as Pong and Space Invaders. When people gathered to celebrate the season, they danced to records by the Jackson 5 and The Carpenters, as well as to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. The museum will be playing period Christmas records during the exhibit’s open hours; if you have a record from that time, bring it along! Christmas in 1975 will open from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on November 18th and 19th and by appointment through the New Year, as well as for extended hours on the weekend of December 2nd to coincide with the town’s annual holiday celebration. Winter Offers Solitude & Peace Hiking and overnight cabin stays provide more than exercise

iking in the winter, especially overnight, is one of my favorite things. It's this time of year the parks and trails turn into magical fairy lands that are perfect to explore and cherish. I'm assuming your hiking boots are not packed away — they should be on your feet during all four seasons so you can enjoy the different colors, smells, and sights of the ever-changing landscapes. The crowds are gone, bears are hibernating, and the pesky bugs are not around; you can truly appreciate the wilderness, solitude, pervading peacefulness and the sounds of your breath and the crunch of your boot. Wintertime demands different skills and gear than summertime for an enjoyable hike. Wear layers: Layering is key to staying warm and maintaining a consistent body temperature. A base layer will wick moisture

off your body, a ﬂeece jacket will provide warmth, and a shell will protect you from the wind and rain. Cotton clothing should be avoided, because once it becomes wet it no longer insulates; instead, it pulls out your body heat. Do not forget a warm hat, a balaclava, gloves, and an extra pair of socks. It is important to keep your feet warm and dry on the trail — wear gaiters to keep snow out of your shoes. Also, consider using hiking poles as they assist with balance, especially on any treacherous or icy trails. Stay fueled: According to Napoleon, an army marches on its stomach. He knew that marching in the cold, especially in snow, burns up to 50 percent more calories. Without enough food in your belly you can get cold fast. Bring plenty of food with you on the trail and pack it so that it cannot freeze. Stay hydrated: Dry winter air can easily lead to dehydration and possibly hypothermia. Drink a lot of ﬂuids to prevent

Think safety: Check the weather before you start your hike. This is VERY important. Unexpected storms may come on fast, and snow and ice may cover the trails. Be sure you know the area where you are hiking very well. Always bring a map and compass with you, as well as a ﬁrst aid kit, a ﬁre starter and matches, a pocket knife, and an emergency blanket. It is also very important someone knows where you are hiking and when you are expected back. CABIN HIKING

Hiking in winter opens up new vistas and adventures, especially when you turn it into an overnight cabin hike. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) has 40 cabins available for rent along the trail from Charlottesville to Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. Even if you are not a member, you have the opportunity to enjoy the woods and mountains along the Appalachian Trail and trails and forests in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Each PATC cabin has a rich history: some were the homes of early settlers, and some were built by the Club, forest rangers, or the Civilian Conservation Corps. Each building is unique. Most are primitive or semi-primitive, while others are modern. Most require a hike in. Plan your cabin hike on their website at patc.net. ❖

There have been quite a few but the most memorable was having a family come to me who, at the time, was living in a hotel room because they had sold their current home and they were buying another. Their loan officer denied their loan and wouldn’t return calls as they searched for an alternative situation. I was able to hear the clients out and find a way to help them get financed. House of Mercy. They are a thrift store that provides help for local families to get on their feet. I have actually toured their facility and learned a lot about what they do. I have donated clothes, household items, and funds. They have a food pantry, they provide clothes, and at Christmas they collect toys to provide to children that may not otherwise receive anything on Christmas day.

Yes, I was born and raised in Prince William County. I also lived in Fauquier for 16 years. A few months ago I moved back to my hometown of Nokesville so my children could grow up closer to my family.

What is your favorite season in this area, and why? I love all the seasons around here but if I have to pick a favorite it would probably be fall. This area in the fall is absolutely beautiful! A few of my favorite things occur in the fall as well, such as bonfires, hunting, watching the Redskins, and watching my two boys play little league tackle football.

Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why?

What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I have been in mortgage banking for over 20 years. My first job was at Joe’s Pizza in Nokesville when I was 14 years old. I waited tables twice a week for extra spending money in the summer. ❖

Health Insurance Enrollment Happening

NOW There are big changes in the ACA for 2018. Five things you need to know BY ASHTON MILLER

ast year, 410,000 Virginians enrolled in a health insurance marketplace plan. On Nov. 1, the marketplace opened for 2018 enrollment and there are some important changes. Whether you plan to sign up for the first time or renew last year’s plan, here are five things you’ll want to know.

The dates are different this year. Open enrollment began Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 15, making the enrollment period shorter than last year. To have 2018 health insurance coverage that starts on Jan. 1, you must enroll in a marketplace plan by Dec. 15. The shorter window for enrollment makes a very important difference for those who already have ACA insurance. If you already have a plan under ACA and do nothing, on Dec. 16 you will be auto-enrolled in the same plan, but it will be too late to change your plan because the enrollment period will already have closed.

Make sure your doctor is included in the plan you choose. Marketplace plan options can change from year to year, so it’s important to review all 2018 plans available to make sure you find one that meets your needs. Before you buy, ask or check online to see which doctors and hospitals are included in the plan. If you already have a regular doctor, check to see if that doctor is part of the plan. “It’s important to note the health care network your plan allows so you can continue using your current provider and keep your out-ofpocket costs down,” said Bob Seehausen, senior vice president of business development and sales for Novant Health. You may be eligible for a lower premium. What you pay for insurance depends on your income. Depending on your income and household size, you may be eligible for a subsidy that lowers your premium. “The majority of people who buy insurance on the health

exchange qualify for subsidies, which can make a policy very affordable,” Seehausen said. “It’s important to do your research. Go to Healthcare.gov and put in your income information to see what your actual premium will be. It could be a lot less than you expect.” In 2017, 84 percent of all marketplace enrollees received tax credits to cover a share of their premium and 57 percent received cost sharing reductions, according to Kaiser Health News. Learn if you qualify for savings by reviewing the health care savings chart on Healthcare.gov.

Preventive care like vaccines and screenings are free. All health insurance plans offered on the Marketplace must cover preventive care services without charging a copayment or coinsurance.

Using urgent and express care clinics, as well as MyChart, can help save you money. You can lower your health care costs by knowing when to access the right type of care. Find yourself sick or injured when your doctor’s office is closed? Instead of heading straight to the emergency room, look for a nearby express care or urgent care clinic. They can provide treatment after hours for many non-lifethreatening health needs and are less expensive than hospital emergency rooms. There may be times when what you need does not require going into the doctor’s office at all. By signing up for MyChart, an online patient tool, you can send a message to your provider, schedule appointments, request prescription refills, pay bills, view laboratory test results and download your medical records. orchestra — all right here in our own backyard. “This is a thoroughly professional production on every level and element right here in backyard. Local residents don’t have to drive all the way to the the Kennedy Center for this caliber of performance,” said Amy Grant Wolfe, MBT’s artistic director.

Anchored by the professional dancers of MBT, Northern Virginia’s largest professional ballet company with 29 full-time dancers from around the globe, the dreamy story comes alive with the help of an ensemble cast of local student dancers of the Manassas Ballet Academy. MBT’s Nutcracker is the only regional production which is performed to live music provided by the professional in-house musicians of Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra. The orchestra, along with exquisite costumes, dazzling custom scenery, and fresh choreography are the hallmarks of MBT’s portrayal of this holiday tradition. “There are always spectacular new elements each year,” says Wolfe, who returned to leading the choreography for this year’s production. “As the company grows, so does our Nutcracker!” This year, newly refreshed backdrops and a brand new hand-painted border (curtains along the top of the set in front of the stage lights and in the wings of the stage) will give the set more depth and make it even more magical. The themes and colors from the set are echoed in the costumes which are designed, maintained, and added to by in-house costume mistress Christina Brooks. “All our costumes are unique and custom-made,” says Wolfe. “They are not ordered online from companies that supply many studios with costumes.” The in-house lighting designer choreographs the light sequences that are unique to MBT’s Nutcracker. The Manassas Ballet Academy’s students and company members are a big part of the production. The number of performances necessitates two dancers alternating in the coveted role of Clara. This year, the role is being played by local students Lexi Brooks, a high school senior, and Emma Rose Palladino, a high school junior. Lexi says, “I have watched Clara from the side of the stage for 10 years, so the feeling of doing it myself is dreamlike. I can't wait to share it with the audience.” Preparation for the Nutcracker takes most of the year. The professional dancers audition in January, and

contracts for the year are awarded in the spring. Auditions for student dancer roles start in May, and they rehearse all summer for this holiday favorite. Choreography, set design, and costumes also begin in late spring. Once MBT’s fall performance ends, the professionals start rehearsing in earnest, and the show really starts to come together in November when the entire cast starts rehearsing together. There are all levels of students from Manassas Ballet Academy in the cast, from the

study in college or abroad. By the time they are 12 years old, students are dancing 5-6 days per week — an exhausting schedule. Emma Rose, one of the local dancers portraying Clara, says, “I want to be a professional dancer, and that takes a tremendous amount of work. Every day I train is one day closer to achieving my goals. Nutcracker is special for me this year because I have an opportunity to be Clara, and it’s also my last Nutcracker before I leave to study ballet abroad.” Opening night every year is started off with MBT’s Salute to the Military, a ceremony that celebrates and thanks all military members and branches for their service, featuring the Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra playing the National Anthem and the four service anthems as well as other forms of tribute. Do I need additional coverage? How much do I have to pay out of pocket? These are all legitimate concerns, but a great way to help with the costs is through a flexible spending account, or FSA. A lot of people are unsure how to manage their budget to pay for dental expenses. Sure, insurance benefits do help, but there still is an out-of-pocket component that must be covered in order to

get treatment completed. If your employer offers flexible spending accounts, this is an ideal way to help cover your costs tax free. What is a Flexible Spending Account?

According to Healthcare.gov, a flexible spending account is a special account where you set aside money that can be used to help pay for health care costs. It can be used to pay co-pays and deductibles, is tax-free, and can be used to cover up to $2600 per year. If you are married and you and your spouse have different employers, both of you can have an account to manage dental and medical expenses.

3. Know your FSA balance. Once you have established the account, know when you must have all of the funds spent, and keep track of your balance. If you do not use the money in the account on qualified expenses before the deadline set by your employer, you will lose the remaining balance. Consider purchasing electric toothbrushes or fluoride adjuncts dispensed from your dental office if you have any remaining dollars in your account. They make great gifts and can have a huge impact on the dental health of your family. Being able to participate in a flexible spending account is an awesome benefit offered by some employers. Take advantage of the opportunity to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible — tax free! ❖

There’s No Place Like Home ….in a House of Worship finding the right one for you BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

t was Christmas Eve and I was home with my son while my husband was working at his job in a profession that doesn’t distinguish between holidays and normal days. Although we had been living in Haymarket for over 10 years and had bounced around to different churches at random times and on select holidays, there had never been one that we called home...yet. My husband wasn’t crazy about the informal atmosphere and ultra-contemporary feel of some of the nondenominational places we had visited. But I wasn’t quite comfortable with the unfamiliar traditions and ultra-large congregation at some of the other churches we had tried. I began searching online for a service in our area that had the latest Christmas Eve service times in the hopes that we could attend as a family when my husband got off work. Although we hadn’t

been regular church attendees, it was important to me that my family honored this Christian holiday. The latest evening service was at a place where I already had made friends from previous interactions in the Haymarket community for so many years. Happy to have found one that fit our schedule, we put on our Christmas finery and headed to the service. The congregation was humble in size. Check. The people knew us and welcomed us at the door. Bonus. The pastor knew me by name. Impressive. As the service began, little bits from our childhoods in our respective denominations began to stand out to both me and my husband. During a specific prayer, I saw him smiling. The music, although contemporary songs that I knew from the radio, were sang in a way that made them feel traditional. The ending of the service brought tears to my eyes as we sang and one lit candle began a path to each parishioner until the whole

room glowed with the most beautiful light. That feeling… this was it. We felt at home then, and still feel the same almost three years later. So how do you find the house of worship, whether it be church, synagogue, or other faith based congregation that is right for YOU? Many would say the very first step is finding out if the particular house of worship you are considering shares your core religious values and teaches from the religious text you believe in. That may be the easy part. A 2014 Pew Research Center study, U.S. Religious Landscapes, says that about half of U.S. adults search for a new congregation usually because their families have moved to a new town or city, something many families in our local area may relate to. The very first factor these families consider is the quality of the preaching, followed by the tone they felt coming from the congregation, meaning how welcoming they are and comfortable they make visitors feel. The style of worship services was another of the top factors that influenced visitors. I asked Pastor Tim MacGowan of Living Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Haymarket for some insight about what makes people decide which church is right for their family. He explains that many families factor in the availability of childcare or the quality of the youth group program for their teens. For some, it’s tradition and they want to attend the denomination they were raised in. For others, it may be how the leaders handle the religious texts: do they teach directly from the stories of the Bible, for example, or do they focus on the general topics instead? Sister Joanna Burley, Director of Mission Integration and Communication for the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia in Bristow, emphasizes the fact that “prayer is deeply individual and private, and at the same time shared and social.” For that reason, it is imperative that parishioners feel a sense of belonging, fitting in. And even within denominations, each service is unique from the others. It is not possible for everything to be perfect, Sister Joanna says, but “when one’s soul rests, when a sense of peace and welcome and familiarity spreads like warmth through one’s heart and the mind is both comforted and challenged, then the place is right.”

“It’s a connection that you have with the pastor and the congregation” Rabbi Schmuly Perlstein, of the Chabad of Greater Gainesville and Manassas, echoes these sentiments, saying that “if someone is walking into a synagogue, he or she is looking for something.” A place of worship should be the last place anyone should feel uncomfortable, he adds, since the primary purpose of being there is to get away from your environment and connect with God on a personal level. So this explains how people seek out a home house of worship but doesn’t answer the question why. Pastor MacGowan points out one element of our modern world that leads people to seek out a religious home and family is the impact social media has had on our lives. Because there are becoming fewer and fewer opportunities for adults — and teens too — to cultivate personal relationships face-to-face, church becomes one of those places. If you do not have a network of support through work or your neighborhood, and your family lives far away, your place of worship can become that for you. In our society, most people who have not been raised with religion do not suddenly make the decision to pursue it, Pastor MacGowan says. It is often triggered by an event, he says, like a marriage, the birth of a child, the loss of a loved one, or a health crisis. And this trigger causes the person to begin to question his or her spirituality. Families also may flock to houses of worship during religious holidays. Sister Joanna says there is something deeply sacred about the holidays, and even those who don’t attend regular services feel a pull to acknowledge their faith during these times. Rabbi Schmuly says that in this day and age, religion is not always a priority but these holiday times are when people feel a ‘gutcheck’ and begin to examine exactly what is taking priority over their lives. “We have to be where our heart and souls find meaning; our souls tell us where to be,” he says. “Holidays are a marking point,” Pastor MacGowan says, especially if someone has lost someone. Christmas without my mom’ and people feel a void in their lives and begin to look for a support system. And because the holidays bring up questions about what they believe, church becomes a way to seek out help answering those questions. “God put in us a desire for real, meaningful relationships,” says Pastor MacGowan, adding that if you find a good church, you can have those relationships with people and with God, and they become very important in your life. When I asked people in our community

how they knew when they had found “the one” they all responded in different ways. Jenifer Griffin of Gainesville said her realization happened when she wanted to go to church, not had to. Jill Moser of Haymarket explained: “I knew we found the right church when Nancy [director of Student Ministries] scooped my newborn out of my hands and said ‘go eat, I’ll take care of him for a bit.’ ” Jill’s husband Dave found the content of the sermons was the biggest factor for him. “It’s a connection that you have with the pastor and the congregation,” said Amanda Murphy of Haymarket, who feels that you know when you know but “it’s definitely not an easy journey finding the right place to worship.” A few others reported they felt like the pastor was talking directly to them at times. A Gainesville resident who attends church in Haymarket, Laura Newman feels connected to the pastor and members but also leaves feeling “full and inspired.” At first, Manassas resident Donna Dailey didn’t

feel anything when attending some “nice churches,” but one particular visit changed all that. “By the time I left, I knew,” she says, adding that she finally felt comfortable to be herself and “it just felt right.” At times, feeling moved to tears, or laughing or nodding in agreement, Kim Williams of Manassas, says she “can’t wait to go back because I might have walked in empty but I left with a full tank.” There were many reasons for my and my husband’s desire to find a home church, among them raising our children with faith and having a place for worship as a family each week. But we quickly found out that it meant so much more than that. After our first year of attending, in the midst of one of the most difficult times of our lives, our home church wrapped their arms around us and never let us go. They provided meals, support, encouragement, and most of all, love and prayers. To this day, my church family shows how much they care for me every single time I see them. My pastor maintains a personal relationship with my family through the years we’ve been attending. He has visited me in the hospital, christened my baby girl, and has been providing emotional support while communicating with me to assure me he is ready and available to help in any way, whenever my family may need it. To say that we don’t know how we would have made it through our crisis without them is an understatement. You might not know right way that you have found your home. It may take several visits. It may take years to gain that kind of comfort. But when it happens, your life will be enhanced in ways you may not realize immediately. Your religious family will celebrate your successes and cry with your failures. They will be there in the midst of difficulty and when your life is at the highest point of happiness. awn Gardner, a local photographer, was enthralled with the television show Bewitched during her formative years. “I thought Darrin Stevens [one of the main characters] had the best job ever! He created slogans and ad campaigns combining imagery and words. I began using a camera at around nine years old and would photograph my own [pretend] marketing shots,” shared Gardner. Her love for the art of advertising and photography as a youngster morphed into a passion for capturing images of people. “I loved telling their stories with

photographs. I was part of the yearbook staff in high school and photography editor my senior year. Little did I know, this was foreshadowing what was to come in my career,” noted Gardner. In 2007, she started her photography business on a part-time basis while she was still a full-time graphic designer. Then in 2013 she became focused solely on her photography career. Her studio specializes in contemporary portraits of women of all ages. “I love photographing women and their relationships to other women — mothers, daughters, sisters, best friends, grandmothers — there is

such a beautiful thread through these relationships,” she explained. “We women are typically so hard on ourselves. When we look at ourselves in a mirror we bring to that reflection all the things we don’t like, and/or the things we have been told we lack. We instantly start to self criticize,” noted Gardner. Inherently she believes culture, people, and imagery — especially on social platforms — have created falsehoods in the way beauty is defined. “All woman are uniquely beautiful and it is time we realize this. My hope is that each woman can see herself as beautiful. I find through my art I am able to get past the untruth and capture the beauty that radiates from within each person I photograph.” Gardner’s mission is to to offer empowerment. “Almost every client

“embrace who you are right this minute” I work with thinks they don’t look great in photographs,” she shared. “All our past experiences affect what we see in our image. When the selfjudgment goes away, it makes a huge difference,” described Gardner. “The experience of seeing how someone truly shines when they exhibit their inner self is something that gives me goosebumps every single time.” Her approach to capturing everyone’s inner brilliance is to create a relaxing, comfortable environment. Clients then let down their barriers, and once those obstacles are removed, Gardner captures the effect with her camera. Her clients are positively amazed with results. Another philosophy of Gardner’s is to “embrace who you are right this minute.” Gardner thinks too many individuals won’t have photographs taken because they are waiting until they lose weight, or they have too

many wrinkles, or for a variety of other reasons. Some clients come to her with negative perceptions related to aging. “I’m on an antiaging campaign; it is not to be dreaded, it is to be embraced. You can still look beautiful, and sexy. Embrace the wrinkles, you don’t need to hide them,” she remarked. “Culture imposes on us,” Gardner explained. “It is important to love

yourself, not your number or size.” And there is no doubt she will continue to empower and help improve a client's self image. This is a lesson for all of us: view yourself for who you really are, not what others have said you are.
