s a kid and as a young mom, I loved Christmas. I loved getting gifts from Santa, and then I loved watching my sons get gifts from Santa (and plenty from mom and dad, too). I loved the busyness of the season; the last-minute shopping, the all-night wrapping, even the two-in-the-morning attempts to put some toy together that my husband and I couldn’t figure out until, at last, we did. Whew! I’m not a kid anymore, and I’m certainly not a young mom, and honestly, I don’t miss the busyness that Christmas brings. I’ve even come to believe that being so busy detracts from the holiday. I take the season at a slower pace now, savoring the opportunity to buy gifts for children tagged on an Angel Tree and the chance to do something good for someone else. It’s the good deeds and giving back stuff that resonates with me now, and the reason this issue celebrates those in our community who are making a difference in the lives of others – at Christmas time and all the time. I hope you’ll take a moment to read “A Chance Christmas Encounter” and “Kids Who Make a Difference.” I truly believe that both will fill your heart with the spirit of the season and make you thankful to live in a community that so actively cares. Happy Holidays!

y t f cra Christmas Traditions GET CREATIVE WITH KERRY MOLINA
BY KERRY MOLINA
I love everything about the Christmas season. I love all of the common Christmas traditions; the tree, the stockings, the cookies, the presents. Bring it on. As an artsy person, I try to make sure that there are homemade elements to my holidays. Here are a few fun, easy and inexpensive ways to get Christmas-crafty.
Recycled Christmas Cards Ornaments

Water-colored Gift Tags

Here’s a fun and easy way to make your own colorful gift tags. On a large piece of watercolor paper, use watercolor paints to paint a variety of stripes, circles or other abstract patterns in holiday colors of your choice. You could even add rubber stamping or drawings if you want. Don’t worry about perfection as the sheet is going to get cut up. Let it dry. Turn it over so you are working with the blank side. Trace a gift tag that has a shape you like. Or, simply divide the sheet up into strips and then draw rectangles with a pencil. Cut these out and you have your tags. Round the corners and punch a hole into the top, if you like. Thread some ribbon through for an extra finished look and your gift recipients will be so impressed with your homemade tags. You’ll have a new yearly tradition!
This crafty tradition could be ornaments or tags! All you have to do is save the Christmas cards you get and maybe ask others to save theirs for you too. Again, work from the blank side. Draw or trace some holiday shapes that you like. It could be as basic as a circle or—my favorite—the shape of a sweater. Cut them out. These instant “ugly sweaters” are funny and really adorable. Embellish to your heart’s content with glitter, stickers, etc. Punch holes in the top and thread some ribbon through. You’ll wind up with some unique gift tags or ornaments for your tree (don’t forget to write the date on the back before you hang them).
Mitten Ornaments with Hidden Note I’m always on the lookout for Christmas ornaments that are mittens that actually have an opening. They look darling on the tree and give a warm, cozy feel. But more than that, the opening gives me the opportunity to tuck inside a note that I write every year at the end of the season. This is a fun tradition you could easily add to your family’s. I write the date at the top and then I just write all about the things we did that year during the holiday season. Then, the following year, it is so much fun to find these ornaments, open up the notes and read about past Christmases. You’ll be surprised at how much you had forgotten. My kids love it. To get crafty with this tradition, why not make your own mitten ornaments? You could find some child-sized ones at a dollar or thrift store and glue on strips of ribbon and pom poms for decoration. Or you could purchase some felt sheets at a craft store. Draw a mitten shape and cut out two. Glue or hand stitch around the edges, remembering to leave the opening. Decorate and poke an ornament hook through for hanging.
As you know, I am all about giving your creativity ways to come out and play. What better time than the holidays? Show your kids that you don’t have to be an artist to enjoy making things. Encourage them to make little gifts for others at this time. I hope you’ll add some Christmas craftiness to your holiday traditions. Feel free to share what you’ve made to kerryc627@yahoo.com. Happy Holidays!

CASUAL DINNER PARTY If you have been invited to a casual dinner party, consider bringing a bottle of wine or sparkling non-alcoholic beverage or a box of chocolates. Flowers already arranged in a Mason jar are also perfect. When you bring a food or beverage items to the host of a dinner party don’t expect it to be served while you are there. This is a gift not to be used with the meal.

FORMAL DINNER PARTY
BY KATHLEEN GENEVA
T
he holidays are stressful enough without having to decide what to bring to the host of a dinner party or event to which you’ve been invited. The fact is though, that when invited to someone's home during the holidays, it is proper etiquette to bring a token of appreciation in exchange for the invite. Of course, it’s also a fact that these gifts should not be extravagant or overly personalized, and they certainly don’t need to be expensive. The key is simply to show gratitude and appreciation. As Emily Post said, “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.” So, the basic premise is: just do something and don’t show up empty handed! To help you, here are a few tips of what to bring when:
{ DECEMBER 2019 |
GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
If you are invited to a formal dinner party and you don’t know the host, gifts are usually not taken but a nice thank-you note to follow up would be most appropriate.
WEEKEND VISIT If you are invited for a weekend visit, sending a fresh garland or wreath in advance is lovely gesture that expresses that you are looking forward to your host’s hospitality. A nice small tree to plant is also a great and different idea. Other
gifts include fresh fruit, candles, a spa basket, his and her robes, restaurant gift cards, dish towels or a basket of homemade treats.
AFTER THE DINNER, PATRY, OR WEEKEND VISIT After a dinner, party, or overnight stay, send a handwritten thank you note to the host and hostess as soon as you can. You will want to do this even if you brought a gift. The note should be short but heartfelt. As the great Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Enjoy the dinners, events, and parties you’re sure to attend this holiday season and practice the etiquette of giving to others. It will make you feel good and you will be remembered for your generosity and thoughtfulness. ❖

ith the holidays upon us, we needed to put some bling in our lives. Details for the Home, 2019 Best Of winner in the jewelry category in the Gainesville/Haymarket area was the perfect spot to find a gift for that special someone. This time I brought my trusty friend, Eileen Carlucci, life coach and founder of Redesign Your Life, whose impeccable style and flair could not have been more suited to be my cohost this go-round. Eileen and I met with the owner, Barbara Diebus, who explained that Details for the Home was opened 17 years ago selling home accessories, but has since evolved to a
place to purchase personal accessories such as clothing, jewelry and amazing gifts. Between gold, silver, a combination of the two, as well as pieces that burst with color, they carry such a wide array of lines you are sure to find something to please. And it's not only the jewelry that keeps folks coming back, it's the experience. Barbara and her team have a wish list program so you can always be certain of getting a gift that you love. They also keep a list of customers who receive texts when new merchandise arrives so they can be the first to snatch up their favorite finds! Finally, what makes this experience over the top is the

FESTIVE HOLIDAY DRINKS FROM THREE LOCAL FAVORITES STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
TRUMMER’S COFFEE & WINE BAR
DUNBRI’S DESSERT CAFE
Niq Lemanski, Coffee Coordinator at Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar is also the creative vision behind the establishment’s 12 days of Christmas tradition continuing this year. From December 1-12, Trummer’s will offer a different specialty holiday drink each day. One choice is the salted caramel hot chocolate, a decadent selection that will delight lovers of hot chocolate and coffee alike. The floating cloud of whipped cream with caramel drizzle hits your lips at the same instant as the sweet warm chocolate liquid. The result is a warming, delicious sweet and salty concoction that you will want more of. The selections will be mostly coffee, with some cold drinks mixed in. The exact recipes are a secret for now, but Lemanski does say she will be including some more original creations, possibly with pear flavors and other unique combinations. Oh, and if you’re an eggnog lover, Trummer’s is offering an eggnog latte for the entire month of December. (Put stopping in for one of those on your holiday schedule, pronto!)
Dunbri’s is already known for their Pure Barry. If you don’t know what that is, you must find out. But for the holiday season, the Maclean family has created some magic selections that are sure to become some of the most talked about new desserts of the year. There is a gingerbread milkshake, flavored with gingerbread cookies, and a peppermint shake which uses peppermint ice cream and flakes of peppermint candy pieces. Yum. Hot chocolate fans won’t want to miss Dunbri’s hot chocolate flight. Served in the most adorable mini-mason jars with your choice of hot chocolate flavors, including gingerbread, candycane, toasted marshmallow, salted caramel, praline, toffee nut, raspberry, and more, the possibilities are endless. Customers can also order the hot chocolate float, which is vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate poured over and topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Looking for something more to accompany your festive drink? Order a sweet mince pie on the side. Delicious!
TRUMMER’S COFFEE & WINE BAR, 14013 PROMENADE COMMONS ST
HIDDEN JULLES Hidden Julles Cafe is known for their natural and organic ingredients, and this year they are offering healthy, specialty drinks for the holidays. Apple cider is the hot drink of the season. The combination of fresh, juiced apples with maple syrup, and cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, results in a soothing, sweet drink that is sure to become a new favorite. But those who want a cold drink can enjoy something too. Owner Aaron Lynch wanted to create a housemade ginger ale, using fresh juiced ginger and celery, maple syrup, and fresh squeezed lemon or lime. These ingredients are mixed together and then topped with Pellegrino or another choice of bubbly water. It’s a refreshing and healthy twist on an old classic. DESIGN 101:
One Good Turn... BY YARON LINETT
“What should I do with my old stuff when I renovate? How can I make my office feel less sterile?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. This month’s column focuses on small and not so small acts of kindness.

I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REDECORATING MY HOUSE. WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY OLD FURNITURE? It would be a shame to throw perfectly usable items away just because they no longer fit your aesthetic. Donating furniture saves you the time of trying to sell pieces or the hassle of arranging to give them away. Plus, places like Goodwill and the Salvation Army will come and pick them up for you. While the Salvation Army maintains a donation value guide on their website we suggest you speak with your Interior Designer to generate a more accurate valuation for your specific pieces. PRO TIP
WHAT IF I’M RENOVATING AS OPPOSED TO DECORATING? Then you are in luck, because while some places will charge you to move

your appliances, and some will charge you to dispose of them, try giving Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore a call. They can come out and take away those heavy appliances and save you money on the front end as well as provide a tax deduction on the back. Demolition is not as fun as certain television shows make it seem, and it is certainly not free...but the aforementioned ReStore can uninstall your cabinets and take them away just like the appliances. legged friends at the SPCA one bit. Either way, your donations will have a new home where they are needed. When looking for replacement pieces we suggest trying cotton towels with a microfiber core. They feel amazing, hold significantly more water, and dry faster than a conventional towel. When replacing blankets, we suggest faux-fur lined cashmere for warmth or backed with synthetic suede for a cooler feel. PRO TIP
IF I DON’T HAVE ANYTHING BIG IS THERE SOMETHING MEANINGFUL I CAN DONATE?
I WOULD LIKE TO DO SOMETHING NICE, BUT DON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DONATE. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?
Sure is. No doubt you have old towels and blankets. Much like clothing, there is significant demand for these items in charitable circuits. New items are easy to donate and can be used by numerous organizations. Older items that are not as pristine won’t bother our four-

Make sure you give them reusable containers. Not only are they more ecologically friendly, but if they are the kind of guests who do enjoy cooking, you can expect to get them back filled with something yummy on the next visit! PRO TIP
ARE THERE WAYS TO APPLY THESE PRINCIPLES TO MY OFFICE? Absolutely. We consider hospitality a critical component of our corporate culture. Anyone who visits our office - client, neighbor, or even employee - is offered a drink and something to eat. If they have a four legged companion we stock treats for them as well. Additionally when we have older items that we can no longer use they get donated just the same as a residence. It never hurts to make sure that a guest’s blood sugar doesn’t dip too low. Whether in a long meeting or a short one people who feel better are generally in a better mood and easier to deal with. We normally suggest chocolate and caffeine, but your brand values may dictate something else. ❖ PRO TIP

ONE ACT OF KINDNESS SETS IN MOTION A RIPPLE EFFECT OF COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FOR A BROAD RUN RESIDENT BY FRANNIE BARNES

Would you know if someone living near you was in need of assistance? It might come as a surprise, but there are members of our community who have ‘fallen off the radar’ and need help. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to ask for help, or are too proud to. But during this season of giving it’s good to be reminded that our simple acts of kindness can cause ripples of change for others. On December 25, 2018, Carla Vergot and her husband Rick were headed to the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy for their traditional Christmas Day hike, when their day took an unexpected turn that would forever change many people’s lives. As they drove down Beverly Mill Drive, a man stumbled into the road and almost fell in front of their car. Carla could tell the gentleman was unsteady and got out to check on him. That is when she met Tom Davenport, a legally blind Broad Run resident who’s spent the last two years living alone. Despite the fact that Tom went for a walk daily, he had a hard time that particular day and it seemed fate intervened when Carla and Rick passed him. Tom thanked Carla for helping to walk him home and as they talked, she learned he had been living alone and as of late, struggling to keep on top of his mail due to his vision loss. In fact, he expressed concern that he needed to sign some legal documents, but wasn’t sure which line to sign. Carla offered to come back at a later date to help him go through the documents. This one simple act of kindness became the catalyst for a much larger, community-based effort to help a neighbor in need. Tom is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Surface Line Officer. He is also an accomplished academic, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s in urban studies. He has worked in the private sector for Radio Shack and the Washington Metro Transit Authority. It is fair to say the rigors of his career demanded good vision. On July 5, 2016, while working as a station manager for Metro, an object hit his eye which caused clouding at first. Thinking he had a cataract, he began to lose vision in the one eye. He was diagnosed with optic neuropathy. He went on short term disability and later had to quit his job. (Although he reported his injury and had been on disability, there was little to no follow up after.) He was later declared legally blind, although he thankfully he can see shadows and some shapes. His wife had been ill, and was moved to a medical facility in Staunton, leaving Tom living alone. For over two years, he lived with his compromised vision, making do as he could. He took Ubers to the

grocery store and was always met with compassion. He fondly shared how the produce manager at the nearby Food Lion would greet him with a hug and help him shop for groceries. But as time went on, his mail piled up, and staying on top of household chores became increasingly challenging. By December 2018, he needed help. During Carla’s visit with Tom after Christmas, it quickly became apparent the legal documents that needed attention were out of her purview, and were only a small part of the big picture. He also needed help with other challenges. Carla started the ball rolling. She arranged for a cleaning crew to clean and organize Tom’s kitchen, which she felt was an immediate need. She also took Tom’s dog Midnight to the vet for a check-up and the vet donated the needed shots, supplements, and care. While helping with the mail, she noticed that Tom and his wife of 27 years were Catholic, so she reached out to St. Stephen the Martyr parish in Middleburg to see if they could assist. She contacted the Pastor, Father Christopher Murphy, who consulted with the Legion of Mary. The Legion of Mary (LoM) is a group of parishioners dedicated to visiting the homebound. Several members of the LoM are very experienced in helping the homebound as they’ve had careers in social work. Carol Kardash is a nurse and former case manager for a large health care company
“TOM IS A DELIGHTFUL PERSON. WE WONDERED FOR MANY MONTHS AFTER MEETING HIM, ‘HOW MANY TOMS ARE OUT THERE WHO ARE BEING OVERLOOKED AND NEED HELP?” and Margie Bocchichio is a former case manager for Fairfax County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). This experience was especially helpful as they knew how to apply for HIPPA advocacy which would later expedite arranging Tom’s medical appointments. This was an important missing piece for Tom – having an advocate to help him navigate medical appointments and legal documents. When Carol and Margie visited Tom’s home to assess the situation they quickly saw that living alone with limited sight presented several issues requiring attention. “Everyone had great ideas, but finding the right organization to gather this information to move forward [was the challenge],” Margie said. Tom’s safety was deemed priority number one. His faithful companion, Midnight, as well as a house cat, were also of concern. Over time, and with much convincing, they were able to eventually get Tom to accept grace from community members and rehome the animals where they could best be served. Margie took Tom grocery shopping; cleaning crews donated their time and resources to clean the entire house. Food drives were held to ensure Tom could receive food without the hassle and money spent getting Ubers to take him out, and entire meals were cooked and delivered. Another LoM volunteer took all of Tom’s clothes to a laundry facility in Manassas, while another rearranged his furniture to make it easier for him to move around his home. The kindness displayed by community members was overwhelming. Margie also contacted the St. Katharine Drexel Mission Knights of Columbus Council #16793 who gathered a group of volunteers to do the ‘heavy lifting.’ They brought in Serve Pro to assess the home to check for safety issues. In April 2019, volunteers from the Knights of Columbus began working on the outside of Tom’s home. In July, 27 men worked for five hours sawing tree limbs and clearing brush. Margie contacted the Office of Veteran’s Affairs to inquire into what assistance they could provide. And Margie and Carol met with the Virginia Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired, who discussed the option of a seven-month program in Richmond at the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Center. This program can assist Tom by teaching him to better cope with the challenges of blindness,

and train him to get an appropriate job given his impaired vision. And that is exactly what Tom wants, to be back at a job working with and surrounded by people. Tom’s acceptance into the program is conditional on medical independence. Margie and the other LoM members organized various medical appointments to make sure he qualified, which centered around sleep studies and his use of a CPAP machine, his knee brace, and a sudden, unexpected bout with appendicitis shortly before the paperwork was complete. Now healthy, Tom is currently in the final stage of approval for the program, and is hopeful to begin soon. Finally, in addition to Tom’s own immediate medical needs, Margie and the LoM were able to arrange for Tom’s wife to be moved to a closer facility in Warrenton, making it easier for him to visit her. Tom has re-joined the church and now attends St. Katharine Drexel Mission in Haymarket. Margie’s husband, a member of the Knights of Columbus, regularly drives Tom to Mass now, and he joins in the parish men’s choir practice. “Tom is a very social person who has maintained his sense of humor the entire time. He has a lot of gratitude, and is very glad to be involved in the community again and not so isolated.” Margie said. “Tom is a delightful person. We wondered for many months after meeting him, ‘How many Toms are out there who are being overlooked and need help?” Carla said. “When you walk past a person or greet someone, know that there is a story there. By simply asking, ‘What can I do for you? Is there anything you need?’ you might be able to help. And the need may be simple, such as opening the mail,” Margie said. From a fateful drive on Christmas morning, one person began a movement in our community. Over the past 11 months, nearly 60 people have volunteered their time, resources, food, and services to help a neighbor in need. “This is a great example of what is happening in our community,” said Father Murphy. “It has been wonderful. It really restores your faith in humanity when you see how much good people will do. I can’t thank them enough. They’ve changed my life,” Tom said. ❖

t is Christmas Eve, and the party guests begin to arrive. The tree is lit, the dancing begins, the chef prepares a holiday dinner and treats, and everyone is in a festive mood. The scene is set for The Nutcracker, the treasured ballet and family holiday favorite. The Centre Performing Arts Company, the non-profit affiliate of Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts in Vint Hill, presents their rendition of this classic, full-length production for three shows December 7 and 8. One of the ballet world’s brightest stars, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Principal Dancer Cory Stearns, returns for the second year to dance the parts of both Cavalier and the Nutcracker. “Cory is not only a beautiful and
artistic dancer at one of the world’s top ballet companies, but also an extraordinary person,” said Artistic Director Kalie Lasley. “His kindness with our students, parents and faculty make for a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and what an amazing treat for the audience to have him dance here locally.” Born on Long Island, New York, Cory Stearns began his classical training at the age of five with Mme. Valia Seiskaya at the Seiskaya Ballet. At fifteen, he participated in the Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition and was offered a full scholarship to The Royal Ballet School in London, one of the top programs in the world. Stearns performed in Madrid, Moscow, Milan, Düsseldorf and London while at The Royal, graduating with honors. Stearns joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in September 2004, the main Company as an apprentice in January 2005, and became a member of the corps de ballet in January 2006. He was appointed a Soloist in January 2009 and a Principal Dancer in January 2011. His repertoire includes the top ballet roles for male dancers from the classics and beyond. As with last year’s production, the Sugar Plum Fairy is danced by former Lasley student and current Orlando Ballet trainee Julia Carlson of Warrenton. Other casting includes Samantha Dumais of Gainesville as Clara, Annabelle Luna of Nokesville as Snow Queen and Flower Soloist, Lasley
Ballet Master Mark Rubin as Drosselmeyer, and Elly-Anne Chavez of Warrenton as Naughty Mouse. There is an interesting connection between Lasley Centre and this ballet -The Nutcracker premiered in Russia in 1892 but was first performed in the United States in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet, the same company that Ms. Lasley danced with in her days as a professional ballet dancer. The magic of The Nutcracker is a wonderful introduction to the arts for younger children and those new to ballet or live performance in general. The lovely dream sequence in The Land of Sweets, the gorgeous, colorful costumes, and the recognizable score by Tchaikovsky speak to all ages, and it is the Company’s hope that their production will continue to be a cherished tradition for area families. Even those with very young children are encouraged to attend and share the experience. Local mother of three daughters Sylvia Updegraff attended several Nutcrackers in the region in search of a ballet studio for her family, settling on Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts because of the quality of the presentation. “There is amazing production value with this Nutcracker,” she said. “The choreography, costumes and level of dancing are top-notch. This is the perfect familyfriendly way to enjoy a beautiful production of The Nutcracker!” ❖

‘Tis the Season to Celebrate... Kids Who Make a Difference STORY BY FRANNIE BARNES | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

hen it comes to doing good deeds, we could all learn from children. These good deeds seem to come naturally to youth. Children see simple acts of kindness as just doing the right thing and their innocence and action can have a profound impact on the lives of others. Here are three remarkable kids who have made our community stronger by giving back not just at the holidays, but every day. Lead by Example When Max Renzi was in fourth grade, he began experiencing intermittent hair loss. It first appeared as nickel-sized spots of hair missing from his head. Max was
24

diagnosed with Alopecia, an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes other areas of the body. It affects as many as 6 million people in the US and often appears during childhood. Max’s alopecia appeared to subside, but when he entered middle school, he began to experience symptoms again. In November of 2018, his hair began to fall out all over his body. Max received wonderful support from his brothers Aidan and Noah and his teachers at Bull Run Middle School and Principal Phythian, who granted approval to wear a hat in school. But despite their support, Max wasn’t ready to

share with his friends and schoolmates that he was losing his hair. And he was physically uncomfortable not having hair on his head and body, a feeling that many of us who have never lost hair, take for granted. As a baseball player who often wears baseball caps, it was at times painful. Max’s parents, Lauren and Alex, did extensive research to find therapies, even traveling to New York Medical Center and consulting with a leading practitioner in alopecia hoping for answers and options to regrow his hair. One option called for a series of needles in Max’s head, which none of the Renzi’s thought was viable. Unfortunately,

there is no cure, and most therapies involve immunosuppressants, which is less than ideal for a young, growing boy. After some time and many questions from classmates, Max decided to confront the topic. He took some painful questions and comments and used them to fuel his courage to remove his hat and in April of this year launched his awareness campaign aptly named Max’s Mission. “Don’t give up,” said Max. “even if people are rude to you. Let it give you fuel. At that moment it might not make you feel good, but then it helps give you energy to keep going and prove them wrong. Speak out.” So that’s just what he did. By presenting on the morning announcements, Max explained what he was going through. He also created a fundraising campaign with all the proceeds benefiting the National Alopecia Awareness Foundation (NAAF). T-shirts were created and sold with half of the proceeds going to NAAF. There was a challenge to wear the shirt, or shave your

head or cut your hair as part of the mission. Max’s physical education teacher Mr. Paul Mongillo shaved his head in support. 20 kids and three teachers (including Mr. M.) shaved their heads and two girls donated their hair. And it didn’t stop at Bull Run Middle. Alyson Satterwhite invited Max to attend the Prince William County School Board meeting to present. Mr. Phythian, Mr. Mongillo and Mrs. D’Amico joined to support him. Battlefield High School’s baseball team invited Max to attend a game and throw out the first pitch. Even friends and family in Rhode Island joined the mission – a family friend’s barber shop donated 100% of his proceeds one day to Max’s Mission and the local baseball farm team invited Max to throw out the first pitch as they joined the mission to spread awareness. Even his favorite pro football player, Rob Gronkowski, donated a signed jersey for auction (which Max’s family friend won at auction and gave to him). Max and his mission have made an impact on many.

“The stories people shared were so inspiring. Max was calling people to thank them for sharing their stories. It really gets you through difficult times by sharing. The support was tremendous,” mom Lauren shared. Max’s goal of raising $1,000 was far exceeded. In total he raised more than $7,000. Max’s Mission is not over. For more information, see the sidebar accompanying this article. You’ve Got a Friend When Braedan White started first grade at Haymarket Elementary School, he didn’t know many children. He attended Haymarket Baptist Preschool for preschool and Kindergarten and going from the small class size and smaller school to a large new school felt overwhelming. Described by his parents as “a heart with arms and legs,” Braedan is an empathetic and loving child who likes to play with others and is always looking

to make sure those around him are happy. “When I first came to my elementary school, I had no friends. So, I told my mom I wish I had a buddy bench like I did at my preschool,” Braedan said. A buddy bench is a simple idea designed to ensure every kid has a friend to play with. According to Braedan, the rules of the buddy bench are simple: Rule number one: If someone is sitting on the bench, go ask if they want to play and make a new friend. Rule number two: If you want to meet a new friend and don’t have someone to play with, sit on the bench. After discussing the idea with his parents, Braedan asked his principal, Mr. Baldwin, if he could make a buddy bench for HMES. Mr. Baldwin asked him to devise a plan, which Braedan discussed over several lunches with the principal. After Mr. Baldwin was convinced it was a good fit for their school, he told Braedan that he would take it to the PTO to get funding and a bench. But Braedan had other plans – he wanted to make it himself. Braedan’s dad is a woodworker and often builds things from scratch. With his father’s supervision, and some help with the larger pieces and large saws, Braedan built the bench with his own hands. When the bench was completed, he gave a presentation over the morning announcements and it was later unveiled at school. The PTO did get

involved by adding two additional buddy benches to the playground. “There are a whole bunch of kids at school you could be friends with, no matter how big or how old they are. It doesn’t matter. Find a friend and be happy you have one,” Braedan said. Very wise advice from a third grader. Building Blocks of Love Niko Chavarriaga is your typical eightyear old boy who loves to play with LEGOs, loves his little sister, sports and superheroes. Little does he know that he has become a super hero to many children at Inova Fairfax Hospital with his mission to provide LEGO sets to patients having treatment. Niko was in Kindergarten at Haymarket Elementary School when he was diagnosed with B Cell ALL Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He has had many treatments for leukemia and at times needed to be homeschooled. He understands what it is like to be in a hospital room and found that Lego’s were the only thing that helped to distract him and keep his hands busy. Naturally, he wanted to help others find a way to feel better while undergoing their treatments. His family also wanted to raise awareness in the community that kids get cancer too, and funding and research is needed to find a cure. Thus began Niko’s #Nikostrong mission to collect new LEGO sets and donate them to Inova Fairfax Children’s hospital.
Molly Maids of Western Fairfax
“Niko is really one of the most kind and compassionate kids I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Niko is often not feeling 100%, but he always gives 200% in class when I see him,” Anna Collins-Walker, his teacher and tutor shared. Last year was the first year he collected Legos and received a whopping 49 new sets. This year, Niko decided to set the bar higher. Dressed in his Forky costume from Toy Story 4, he greeted parents at Back to School night, handed out fliers and has collected more than 200 sets. Mrs. Collins created a YouTube video to spread the word of his goal to classmates, family and friends, and the result is that people from as far away as Japan have helped him. “Niko is truly the bravest kid I’ve ever met. He’s always thinking of others and is completely selfless,” said his mom, Karla. Niko has no plans of stopping. Even though his treatment will end in December of next year, he plans to continue to collect and distribute LEGO sets to the children at Inova Fairfax Children’s Hospital. This second grader has aspirations as big as his heart and will continue to be a hero to the many kids he helps. Max, Braedan and Niko, thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to help those around you. Each one of you is an inspiration and your community appreciates you! ❖

Wine

have a sweet tooth. Several of them, actually. And ‘tis the season when they all emerge at once, jockeying for position, to get first dibs of whatever sacchariferous morsel I have to offer. I try not to disappoint them, as they’re all I got… They know I love wine. Acidic, tannic, bold, bone-dry wine. But, in keeping our relationship intact, especially during pumpkin pie and fruit cake season, I reward my choppers with Kohleresque showers of vino dulce, giving thanks for their tolerating the countless gallons of droughty bottlings they endure all year long. Now, dessert wines and I go way back. In fact, my first experience with the great Alsatian (France) grape

gewürztraminer, one of the finest noble rot grapes in the world, was when I foolishly poured it all over my vanilla bean ice cream. I was young and not so smart. But, once I took a proper sip of the wine on its own, it was game over. There are numerous, fabulous dessert wines that can be found all around the world, including France, Germany, Canada, Hungary and, of course, the USA. Grapes that are picked late in the harvest, when sugars are most concentrated - hence the moniker, ‘late-harvest’ wines are many, including the above mentioned ‘gewurtz,’ riesling, chenin blanc, viognier and, of course, muscadelle, as well as the entire muscat family of grapes. And styles can range from sparkling to a complex collection of rich, still offerings of both sweet white and red wine grapes...I’ve enjoyed them all. As you know, I love Italian wine; so, it only makes sense that one of my favorite dessert wines is Moscato d’Asti. A relative of the ancient muscat family of grapes, Moscato is the premier Italian dessert wine, and Asti is considered its true home. For this final column of 2019, I’ll introduce you to a small family who produces beautiful dessert wines, and hopefully they will make their way to your table for the holidays. Elio Perrone is the name of both the father and son of Stefano Perrone. A former motorcycle racer who took over his father’s domain in 1989, Stefano has emerged as one of the brightest stars

in Piemonte’s wine galaxy, and his Asti winery is an “oenological tailor's shop” known for its unique attention to detail with each harvest, wine, and label. Because of its delicacy and dependence on perfect balance, great moscato is difficult to make. Stefano knows this well. While he carefully tends to vines and cellar, his wife and business partner Giuliana is involved with other facets of the family operation, including the creative needs, crafting the labels for Stefano’s bottle choices. Even little Elio helps around the place, getting ready for what will perhaps one day be his turn. Back to moscato… The most widely planted white wine grape in all of Piemonte, moscato is predominately used for the
“Because of its delicacy and dependence on perfect balance, great moscato is difficult to make.” production of the world’s most popular sweet sparkling wine Asti Spumante. It is also used to craft the still white wine Moscato d’Asti, an aromatic and palate-enveloping jewel of a wine. Stefano captures all of this magic in his beautiful bottling called Sourgal Moscato d’Asti. Taking its name from one of
the vineyards in an area called Castiglione Tinella, Sourgal is pure in its essentials. Grape colors moving from yellows to greens are vivid and brilliant. In the glass, Sourgal is intense with orange flowers, yellow peach and sage…a blend of nuances unlike anything else. Sweet and harmonic, it is well balanced, with great acidity. It’s a delight with cookies, tarts, and even savory finger foods. It can be enjoyed any time of the day, any day of the year. One of the other great surprises of Piemonte dessert wines comes from a grape called brachetto. An aromatic red varietal, brachetto’s origins are uncertain, although most consider the town of Acqui Terme in the province of Alessandria as its home. As a wine, brachetto finds its best expression in sweet red sparkling wines, where the floral notes and fresh wild strawberry and raspberry aromas shine. Staying true to his art, Stefano has created a fabulous wine called Bigarò, a magical blend of both the brachetto
and moscato grapes. As he states, “When I thought of Bigarò (mottled in Piedmontese dialect), I wanted to create something new and exciting.” He’s certainly done that, as both grapes interweave, providing the best of what each has to offer; moscato acquires the red fragrance and flavors, brachetto absorbs all the fruit nuances of its companion. Bigarò is bright cherry in color, with purplish tinges. Scents of wild strawberry, raspberry and rose petals dominate, while mouthwatering acidity defines the palate. This is a clean, fresh wine, balanced in all the right ways. Both wines retail for about $20 and have holidays written all over them. I hope you’ve had a fantastic wine year. It’s been a true pleasure to try and bring you something new every month and I look forward to the great wines of 2020. Have a great end of the year and Happy Vino’ing! ❖

Scott Abell: Grateful Heart Patient BY SUSAN TULINO
W
hen 49-year-old Scott Abell, a northern-Virginia-based financial advisor, husband and father of three, experienced a heart attack, he first thought it was just a cold. He was active and in good health, but unknown to him, Scott had two blocked arteries: one 80% blocked and the other 100% blocked. As Scott experienced pain that felt like “acid being poured into his chest,” his wife drove him to the emergency room at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center. “The receptionist must have known something was seriously wrong because a nurse came to get me immediately,” said Scott. “I started to lose consciousness, and within a couple of minutes I learned I was having a massive heart attack.”
Transport to the Cath Lab Fortunately, Haymarket Medical Center is just 10 miles from Prince William Medical Center, a sister facility equipped with a full-service diagnostic and interventional heart catheterization lab (cath lab). Scott was transported there and met by a cardiologist and a team of cardiovascular invasive specialists waiting to begin treatment. “Forty percent of patients who experience a heart attack have no prior symptoms,” said Hamid Taheri, MD, medical director of heart and vascular services at Prince William Medical Center. “The sooner we can open

an occluded artery, the higher the chance of survival and recovery. In fact, data suggests that if we can get to these patients in the first hour of symptom onset, the patient should make a full recovery.” All Prince William County, Manassas Park and City of Manassas ambulances are equipped with LifeNet electrocardiogram (EKG) monitors, so EMTs can begin treatment immediately upon arrival and continue during transport to the hospital. EKG results are transmitted to awaiting cardiovascular physicians, who begin to diagnose the problem and prepare the cath lab before even meeting the patient. According to James Pena, RCIS,
kick in — which evoked a laugh and an explanation that they were already halfway done with his procedure. “I couldn’t believe it. The doctors had been working to remove my blockages before I even realized what was going on.” The case was done via the radial artery in Scott’s wrist, which is considered a safer avenue to access blockages than the traditional femoral approach and has been shown to foster shorter recovery times. “I was blown away by the treatment — my chest pain and pressure were relieved immediately. I am forever grateful for the skills the team used to save my life,” said Scott. Scott’s sentiment seems to be shared by the

With its efficient cath lab team, services and transport program, Prince William Medical Center’s 53 minute average is almost half that time.

Prince William County community. According to Pena, cath lab services at Prince William Medical Center have seen a 15–20 percent growth year after year and the hospital will soon be opening a second facility. Unfortunately, Scott’s story is not uncommon. Heart attacks can strike even the healthiest individuals and do not always manifest in the stereotypical chest and arm pain. Scott, for example, noticed feelings of agitation triggered by his body’s “fight or flight” response to his artery blockages. If you suspect you’re having a heart attack, call 911 immediately for help. ❖

HGBA MEMBER MEET & GREET
Maria Uriyo, Ph.D. & Newland Agbenowosi, Ph.D. ABACUS ROBOTICS CORPORATION 14600 WASHINGTON ST, SUITE 152, HAYMARKET 571-436-3147 | MURIYO@ABACUSROBOTICS.COM | WWW.ABACUSROBOTICS.COM
When and why did you decide to start your own company? We decided to start our own company in 2018 and moved into our current location this April. Prior to our move, we had been coaching a robotics competition team. While coaching, we realized a need for students to be introduced to STEM as well as the need for them to have the foundational knowledge necessary in order to develop their interests in STEM. As a way of addressing these needs, we started offering robotics camps. The effort progressed into the diversification of our services to include camps in Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing, and independent mentoring programs. How does your business serve the local community? We offer formal programs to students in grade 3 and higher. We also work with parents to tailor programs for Pre-K to second grade students. Our offerings include camps, after-school programs, birthday parties, explorer-hour activities, one-on-one tutorial sessions and mentored research projects. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. Last April, our robotics team, the IronMechs, won the middle school level computer aided design (CAD) award at the VEX World Championships. The winner is determined based on designs of VEX robotics parts submitted by middle school students from all over the world. We were very honored that our team’s design was selected as the winner.
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? Having recently joined the HGBA, I got the chance to network and meet other businesses. I was invited by Carried to Full Term and on my first visit our business won the chance to be featured in this spotlight! What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? Build a diverse community of supporters, network, and create standardized processes to enable others to help you and your team. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? Newland is originally from Ghana and I from Tanzania. We both graduated from Virginia Tech, but moved to California for work. We returned to Virginia in 2006 and have lived in Haymarket for 13 years. We like this area for its proximity to nature and easy access to urban amenities. What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Fall. The changes in color, the cooler weather and festivities that surround the season make it a beautiful time of the year. What are some hobbies you enjoy? I enjoy hiking, drawing/sketching, and racquetball. Newland likes ping pong, racquetball, designing/crafting/3D printing, and tinkering with mechanisms and electronics. What is your favorite local high school sports team? Well, since robotics is now considered a sport, our favorite teams are our own IronMechs VEX robotics teams.
Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which ones and why? Tyke Foundation (Leesburg), AHEAD Inc. (Rockville, MD), Carried To Full Term (Haymarket), and Future Kings (Woodbridge). These nonprofits have youth centered missions and we are honored to collaborate with them. What was your most interesting job prior to your current profession? In the mid 2000s, we had a business developing digital maps of cities in Africa for use in Garmin GPS devices. We worked with local partners to create maps of the cities of Accra, Ghana; Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania; and Nairobi, Kenya. We sold and distributed our maps on SD cards for users to insert into their Garmin GPS devices. It was a fantastic experience. ❖
The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area.
