hope you’re having a wonderful summer. Mine’s been great so far, filled with rugby matches and road trips to their far-flung locations. I like this time of year; I get to see my son play and I get to discover the towns and cities he’s playing in. He runs up and down the pitch in spectacular physical condition, and I eat my way through Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the City of Philadelphia and, most recently, Atlantic City. Please, no one talk to me about bathing suit season! When my sons were younger, though, we kept our road trips and summer excursions closer to home. I think that’s why I absolutely love, and hope you’ll love, the features in this issue’s special Summer Fun section. From Christine Craddock’s heartwarming piece on family camping trips, to a roundup of the food trucks delivering summer’s favorite dishes, to Frannie Barnes’ “Summer of LOVE” recap of her family’s road trips to several of the LOVE signs across our region, each reminds me of things we did when my boys were younger and inspires me to suggest we do them now. (They’re 27 and 20, so I’m unsure they’ll want to explore LOVE signs with me, but you can bet I’m going to ask!) Happy reading, happy summer. Stay safe, wear sunscreen, and enjoy!

weet, sweet summertime. For kids and teenagers, summer break means three months of glorious freedom from homework, studying and early wake up calls. Adults and kids alike hear “summer” and think of vacations, pool parties, grilling out and general time outside — what’s not to like, right? Well, as the saying goes, “it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.” Karla Lacayo, MD, an emergency medicine provider at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center and Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center, discusses some of the injuries emergency departments see during the summer months and tips for preventing them.

Sports Injuries No kid wants to be stuck in a cast in the summer heat, but according to Dr. Lacayo, some of the most frequently treated summer injuries are for sports-related accidents. Kids and families are outside riding bikes, skateboards and hoverboards (yes, hoverboard injuries have skyrocketed in recent years). Those who aren’t paying attention or riding without protective gear put themselves at high risk for accidents and injuries. “As soon as summer rolls around, we treat a large number of broken bones, contusions and head injuries,” said Dr. Lacayo. “It’s important to wear helmets and knee/elbow pads, obey the rules of the road and be aware of your surroundings.” Heat-related Illness Speaking of being aware of

your environment, check the forecast before heading outside. “When temperatures hit 90plus degrees, we advise people to ease into physical activity and make sure they stay hydrated with not only water, but also electrolyte replacement fluids,” said Dr. Lacayo. “Even with increased intake of fluids, intense physical activity in extreme temperatures can be dangerous. Nausea, headaches, dizziness and cramping are all signs that you should slow down.” In some instances, heat exhaustion and dehydration can warrant visits to the emergency room. Heat strokes, however, always require immediate medical attention. Signs of heat stroke include vomiting, confusion, hallucinations and gait imbalance. Insect Bites Though not necessarily an injury, Dr. Lacayo also notes that emergency departments treat more symptoms and diseases related to bug bites in the warmer months, when insect populations thrive. “Virginia is an endemic area for Lyme disease. If you find a tick on your body, remove it immediately and monitor the area for rashes, which are an early sign of Lyme disease. We also see cases of the mosquito-transmitted West Nile virus every summer. Get in the habit of applying insect repellent when you’re outside, especially in wooded or grassy areas, or near water sources,” said Dr. Lacayo. If you experience vomiting, difficulty breathing, fever or a rash after contact with an insect, visit the nearest emergency room immediately. Burns Fireworks and grilling out are fun ways to celebrate

Independence Day. Unfortunately, unsafe behaviors also make them two of the biggest causes of emergency room visits for burn treatment. “People set off fireworks and sparklers to celebrate the Fourth of July and sadly, we usually see a few cases of children with burns.” said Dr. Lacayo. “It’s also a big holiday for grilling, so we also see injuries from improper grill use or accidental contact with the hot surface.” For your safety, and the safety of others, neither fireworks nor grills should be used under the influence of alcohol. Water-Related Injuries Dr. Lacayo also advises avoiding alcohol around water. Though she says drowning incidents are relatively infrequent, being near the water in an intoxicated or drowsy state puts people at higher risk for drowning or other injuries. Boats, jet skis, water skis or other water-sport equipment should never be operated after you’ve been drinking. The old folk wisdom that says, “don’t swim for 30 minutes after you eat,” isn’t entirely factual. Light snacking before swimming is generally well tolerated, Dr. Lacayo confirmed, but heavy meals that could cause cramping or drowsiness should be avoided or given plenty of time to digest. Summer is a fun time of year, but it comes with its share of risks. Spend more time enjoying the season and less time in the emergency room by making safety and preparedness a priority this summer. Vein Care: Regaining Confidence in Your Legs BY JAIMEE COUNCIL

e all know that veins are a crucial part of our vascular system, that they’re vital to carrying blood and oxygen throughout our body and are of critical importance in getting blood to our heart. For this, we deeply appreciate our veins. What we don’t appreciate is when they show up on our legs. Gnarled, unsightly, and sometimes painful veins effect 25 million Americans making them self-conscious at least, and uncomfortable at worst. There is, however, treatment and the chance to regain confidence in your legs. Let’s start by taking a look at the most common forms of venous disorder: varicose veins and spider veins. Varicose veins. Varicose veins are often the result of

dysfunctional valves, meaning the veins no longer effectively carry blood back to the heart. Blood then flows backward or collects in the veins, causing them to become enlarged. For this reason, varicose veins are often bulging and cord-like in appearance. If you have varicose veins, you may also experience leg swelling, itching, or an achy or heavy feeling in your legs. Spider veins. Spider veins are small capillary veins that appear as a red, purple, or blue web of veins just below the surface of the skin and can sometimes cause pain or an itching sensation. While spider veins are similar to varicose veins, they are not usually accompanied by deeper circulation issues. However, spider veins can be just as unsightly as varicose

veins and cause people to feel uncomfortable about the appearance of their legs. So, now that we know a little more about what we’re dealing with, what kind of treatment options are available? One treatment for varicose veins is Endovenous Laser Therapy, or EVLT. This is a minimally invasive procedure during which a thin flexible tube with a small laser attached to the tip is inserted into one of the abnormal veins in the leg. The laser is used to seal off the abnormal vein. This causes the blood to be redirected and to circulate more efficiently through other healthy veins. As a result, patients often experience a significant reduction in symptoms along with improved appearance of their legs.

Sclerotherapy is another minimally invasive treatment offered for spider veins. During this procedure, a small needle is used to inject an irritant solution into the vein, causing it to collapse and be reabsorbed so that it is no longer visible on the surface of the skin. Both sclerotherapy and endovenous laser therapy require no sedation and usually take less than an hour. This means patients are back to their lives with a lot more confidence in their legs in no time. HGBA MEMBER MEET & GREET

Lynda Kummelt KEEP PRINCE WILLIAM BEAUTIFUL

When and why did you decide to join this organization?

I chanced upon Keep Prince William Beautiful in 2017 when I was looking for a site to do my internship. As luck would have it, I was chosen for the environmental education internship. Toward the end of it, the programs manager left. I applied and got the job. Fast forward to May, 2018, our executive director left and I stepped in as interim director. My position became permanent last September. If I had to do it all over again, I would happily choose KPWB because the work we do really makes a difference. How does KPWB serve the local community? Keep Prince William Beautiful oversees several programs, including Adopt-A-Spot, Community Cleanups, Beautification, and Educational Outreach. Last year, our volunteers picked up over 33,000 pounds of litter and recycling. In addition, two pollinator gardens were installed with native Virginia plants and hives for native bees and honey bees.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession.

County Landfill. After receiving a generous grant from Keep America Beautiful and Lowes, it was amazing to watch the garden take the place of a grassy area filled with non-native plants. People donated old canoes and tires to use as planters, old pallets were repurposed as fences and native bee hotels, and close to 200 volunteers came out over two Saturday mornings to help organize and plant the garden. Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you and your organization?

I am amazed how so many HGBA members go out of their way to approach you and ask about your business. Being welcomed with open arms has helped me spread the word about our programs, and it is encouraging to see so many people in the local business community supporting small non-profits like KPWB. What’s one business tip you can offer other professionals?

Always follow up with people. Be it a highschool student in need of service hours or a potential program sponsor, I make sure to follow up quickly because anyone who reaches out to us deserves our full attention.

What is your favorite season in this area, and why?

My favorite season in this area is spring. After the cold weather, KPWB ramps up all our programs and our fundraiser. Volunteers come out of hibernation to help with our Great Prince William Cleanup in April, along with many community cleanups organized by communities all over the county. Our fundraiser takes place at the beautiful Winery at La Grange and gives us a chance to showcase all the great work we have done over the past year, not to mention sit

back and enjoy good food and wine with our incredible group of supporters. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession?

My first job was at a flower shop where I made deliveries and helped make the arrangements. Since then, I’ve worked as a forklift driver, veterinary assistant, and combat medic in the Army. Each of these has helped prepare me in different ways to grow KPWB into an even more impactful organization. ❖

’m just going to assume that you don’t go to craft stores as often as I do. When I walk in, they shout, “Kerry!” like “Norm!” on Cheers. And it’s really hard for me to not go up and down every single aisle every time I go. I don’t think I’ve ever gone into a craft store looking for a certain item, gone straight to that item, picked it up, walked to the cashier and purchased it. The focus and discipline that would take! I can’t even. But it occurs to me that most people might walk into a craft store, like our local Michael’s, and feel overwhelmed. So, I thought I’d create a guide to help you navigate the store and put together a basic art kit. Afterall, I want everyone to have some art supplies in their home to keep that creativity going. Let’s start with paint. There are some high-quality paints like Golden brand that are great for artists who are selling their work. But for a basic set that is still good quality, I suggest the Deco Art paints in aisle 65. Another option is an Artist’s Loft set of 12 for $13.49. You don’t need to buy

paint brushes individually. Find the Craftsmart set of 18 brushes on the endcap of the aisle near the paints. This way you’ll get a variety of shapes, sizes and bristles all at once. It’s $8.99. I can see how the paper section (aisle 58) could be very overwhelming. So, here’s the deal: Canson and Strathmore are nice brands, but you don’t need to start there in the beginning. Again, Artist’s Loft is great. If a pad says “Sketch” the paper is quite thin and really only good for pencil drawing. Paper goes by what is called “weight.” Sketch paper is 50-pound. By comparison, Drawing paper is 70-pound, meaning stronger. This could handle markers better. I personally buy Watercolor or Mixed Media paper, between 90 – 140-pound, as it’s much heavier and can

withstand all the paint and collage I do. Lastly, you can pick the size of the paper you want and whether the pages pull out or stay in a spiralbound pad. If you’d like to paint on canvas, check out Artist’s Loft canvases, which are often packaged in multiples called “Value Packs.” Many are located on the far-left wall of the store and come in three levels of quality: 1) academic, 2) artist and 3) professional.

It is a matter of preference really, but beginners can start with the first level. Lastly, I can’t help but share with you my favorite aisle: #93. Brands like Recollection, Tim Holtz and Art-C get my creative juices flowing. Art journals, stamps, and embellishments, oh my! This summer, I hope you’ll put together an art kit for yourself and your children, and I hope that this little guide through the Gainesville Michael’s will make you feel less daunted by a store full of possibilities.

You can find them at wineries, breweries, private parties, country clubs, and sometimes parked right outside your office. To whet your appetite, we’ve profiled three of our favorites here. regular appearances across the region. After studying accounting, Pryce noticed the trend in food trucks. “My mom had a catering business. I invited her over and she shared her experience and expertise with me.” The concept for his menu became “blending American favorites with popular Caribbean dishes.” Jerk seasoning is an integral ingredient in Caribbean cuisine, so once he had perfected his homemade jerk sauce, tacos and wraps became a standout menu item, suitable to all tastes. “A lot of people assume that Caribbean food is spicy,” says Pryce,” but it’s actually very mild.” He seasons chicken thighs, slow cooked and pulled apart, served over flour tortillas with provolone cheese, jerk sauce, spinach and shredded cabbage. Most dishes are served with plantains, red beans and rice or fries. Red Bone’s menu is available in the Haymarket area through GrubHub, but look for the truck at Quantico Marine base, Dominion Valley Country Club and at this year’s Haymarket Day on October 19th. JOHNNY MONARCH’S Passing through Marshall, some may do a double-take when they see a British double-decker bus parked back off the main road. Look closer and notice that the long-hauler, which used to run the Yorkshire to Manchester route, has been converted to a “bustaurant” as owner Brian Lichorowic likes to call it. Lichorowic has lived in Middleburg for over 25 years. He calls himself “an old internet guy,” describing his earlier career; this, he says, is his “2.0 in life.” Serving a fun menu, Johnny Monarch’s offers both foods that are “really good for you, and really, really bad for you.” Lichorowic and co-owner Lorie Addison took inspiration for some of the lighter menu options from the United States Olympic Committee training table including recipes suitable for a vegan water polo player alongside more calorific options like “Steak Me Away” ($18), three quarters of a pound of shaved ribeye with cheese and grilled mushrooms, onions and peppers served with Johnny cakes drizzled with local honey made by his brother. Lichorowic and Addison are planning the arrival of a second bus on the premises – this one will be a bar area with an open platform on top, situated around an outdoor dining area and stage. A list of summer events, concerts and performances are already being planned for what Lichorowic describes as a “unique piece of community” in the middle of Marshall. Keep up with the truck! Founded in Historic Manassas and serving hot spots across the DMV, the idea for The Frenchman Food Truck was born at a window seat in a French bistro on a snowy Saturday afternoon in New York City in February 2015. Owner Johnnie Thomas and his wife, Marie, were on vacation and he was contemplating becoming his own boss. During lunch, sitting behind them at the bistro, an elderly French gentleman was alone and fully enjoying life. Johnnie was inspired by the man’s lively energy and spirit. He leaned over to his wife and whispered, "If I open a business of our own, I'm going to name it after him." To which she replied, "You don't know his name." “Yes, I do,” said Johnnie. “He's The Frenchman." Since that fateful day, The Frenchman has been crafting French food with a Virginia accent much to the delight of all who’ve experienced it. LOVEwork at Luray Caverns Truth be told, our first foray with the LOVEworks signs began six years ago at Luray Caverns. The kids were much younger and loved climbing on it, and we loved the new and fun photo op.

f you’ve traveled on major highways like Route 66, I-95, I-64 you’ve seen the white metal LOVE signs at the rest stops. Even downtown Manassas has one at the train tracks. We’ve been known to take a family selfie at these signs, and two summers ago I was inspired to research their origin and our state’s slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers.” I discovered that Virginia’s “LOVEworks” campaign is comprised of more than 140 LOVE signs and each represents the culture of its community. Always trying to keep my family active (or as my husband might argue, not letting anyone rest), I decided in June of 2017 that we were going to hit as many LOVE signs as we could within a two-hour drive. Thus began our “Summer of Love.”

LOVEwork at Airlie Airie is a hotel and conference center in Warrenton that, in addition to being a historic building, is a pioneer among environmentally friendly hotels. Their LOVEwork sign was the first in Warrenton, and true to its reputation, is constructed with 95% recycled material. In the L are wine bottles, the O is an old farm tractor tire, the V is a trellis with vines growing in it and reminiscent of the Pont des Art Bridge in Paris, the E allows ‘love locks’ to be attached. After couples bring their lock and attach it, there is a special box in the tractor tire used to throw away the key. (Very romantic!)

LOVEwork at Culpeper Depot Despite its incorrectly spelled name (there really ought to be two p’s in pepper), Culpeper has a fascinating history. It was originally named Fairfax; was a crossroads for armies marching through Virginia during the Civil War; and is home to The State Theater, an art deco theater opened in 1938. Congress. It is currently closed but shines a light on the fact that movies and the arts have always been a part of the city’s history. We discovered a quaint walking town, and a historic train station. Across from the train station is the Culpeper Loveworks sign called “Reel LOVE” because it is made of movie reels. There is a train that can take you from Manassas to Culpeper if you’re curious.

LOVEwork in Leesburg In Leesburg, there’s an entrance to the W&OD (Washington & Old Dominion Railroad) trail, well-known for bikers and trail runners. The LOVE sign here was designed by a local artist and metal fabricator and is made of wheels and tire spokes.

LOVEwork in Purcellville At the end of the W&OD trail is Purcellville. The Purcellville LOVEworks sign represents Loudoun County’s winery industry and has wine labels and corks from all 35 Loudoun wineries and art from local artists as well. Purcellville is an old town, founded in the 1740s, and we found that it was chock full of boutiques and antique stores that our entire family enjoyed exploring. (It must be noted that the adults did not care so much for finding relics from our childhood in said “antique” stores.) It too was a critical

juncture in the Civil War and as such, the “Great Road” was constructed to connect the city to Leesburg and eventually on to Alexandria, as the precursor to the W&OD trail. Sadly many of Purcellville’s historic buildings were destroyed in two fires, but the town was able to survive thanks to the railroad. The historic train station was a treat and you can learn more about the city in it.

LOVEwork at Morias Vineyard Bonus - we went to a winery and it had a LOVEwork sign! No history here, but, this particular winery is constructed completely out of cement, even the sign.

Orange County is best known for being home to James Madison, father of our Constitution and his home, Montpelier. The LOVE sign was constructed by a local blacksmith and the L is representative of the Constitution, the O represents the civil war and the county’s involvement in it, the V has vines representing Orange County’s wine industry and the E has horseshoes representing the equestrian history and culture of the area. The sign and Orange County’s beautiful historic buildings were fun to explore.

LOVEwork in Liberty Mills Farm This LOVEwork sign was a tricky one to find. Waze steered us in the wrong direction and we were driving around farmland for quite some time until we located it. Set on Virginia’s largest corn maze (25 acres!), Liberty Mills Farm also has pick your own strawberries and produce. The sign is a nod to Virginia’s agricultural heritage and growing agri-tourism.

I’ll admit that I now understand our state slogan. Virginia is full of rich history, agriculture, emerging environmental efforts and let’s not forget the wineries. I encourage you map out a trip like this. We spent countless hours in the car without staring at screens, actually talking to each other (except for the occasional car nap), and at times it felt like we were driving through a movie set – the towns were so beautiful! It’s one of the best memories I have of time spent with my family and what’s not to LOVE about family time? ❖

o be completely honest, the first time we decided to go camping I wasn’t quite sold on the idea. We stayed in a basic cabin at a campground halfway between Haymarket and Baltimore, where my family lives. The cabin was primitive but charming - two beds inside and not much more. It snowed and I froze. I’m the kind of person who would rather sweat to death than freeze. And that’s exactly what happened on our next camping trip. It was sweltering hot so we spent the weekend in bathing suits and I loved every minute of it.

My family began camping more often and whoever was able to join us would meet at whatever campground was decided on in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania. This became a way for us to get together away from all of our busy, life responsibilities. With no distractions, there is nothing standing in the way of conversations and making memories. My parents then purchased a camper, which

only cemented the fact that we were now official camping people. The most exciting part about a camping weekend is waiting for everyone to arrive and getting things set up. most interested in. We make a tentative plan to get everyone where they need to be to take advantage of as many activities as possible. But in between these activities is where the magic happens. The area that surrounds your campsite is a treasure trove of things for kids to explore. We bring a yard-sale purchased metal detector that has created so much fun for them in finding objects and running back to show us what they dug up. The best part there isn’t a single Kindle or iPad or any connected device in sight and they don’t ask for them. In my family, there are six cousins ranging in age from three to 11. But even with this age range, they all find ways to play together and explore. They catch frogs, carve sticks, gather wood for the fire, and collect rocks. The older ones make sure the younger ones are safe while the adults check in but mostly let them roam. The daylight hours are mostly spent doing what the kids want to do but when darkness comes, it’s adult time. Exhausted from the full day, the kids settle in to watch a movie or retire to their sleeping areas. By this time, the fire is roaring and we form a circle around it in our chairs. The conversation flows and the laughs are endless. Unlike a beach vacation that you wait all year for, these weekends can be enjoyed more often. And while I would love to camp with friends too, the fact that it allows me to be with my family really seals the deal for me. My favorite time of camping is the morning. While the rest of my extended family stays in their campers, my husband and I, our two kids and two dogs sleep in a big tent. There is just something

about waking up in nature, with the birds chirping and the sounds of a campground awakening. The smell of fresh coffee brewing makes you want to get up early and we all gather around in our pajamas and messy hair to enjoy the best part of waking up. If we’re lucky, the kids sleep a little bit longer and then appear and begin asking for breakfast. By now, you can smell which fellow campers are making bacon over the fire or frying eggs. My dad’s coffee and my mom’s biscuits and gravy are the best breakfast for me though. Once the food is hot, we all line up and fill our plates and talk about what the day will bring. Before a trip, we plan out meals and make sure we have what we need and that everyone contributes and commits to making a lunch or dinner. The recipes we choose are designed to spend the least amount of time cooking, which has been much easier now with the portable Instant Pot - a staple for camping - and electric skillets. One favorite camp food is walking tacos. While the recipes vary, it is basically a delicious twist on tacos that involves eating out of individual chip bags. Everyone makes their own version by choosing which toppings they want. Kids love it too because… well… tacos. One of our family traditions is taking a Halloween camping trip each Fall. Many campgrounds host Halloween-themed weekends in October. The kids dress up and trick-or-treat through the whole campground, and then participate in costume contests, pumpkin carving, crafts, and so much more. Nature is particularly beautiful in the fall, and just being in it makes the weekend that much more enjoyable. When choosing a campground, there are a few factors that will make your decision for you. One is location. Here in Virginia, there are so many within a reasonable drive that this might not narrow it down for you. Seasoned campers know the ins and outs of each campground and even where the best sites are. But for beginners, sometimes you just have to start slow and learn as you go. I never would have thought I’d enjoy tent camping so for years we stayed in cabins. Some campgrounds have many cabin options, but others don’t. Some cabins have the bare minimum while others have refrigerators and bathrooms. And don’t let anyone tell you this is ‘glamping’ - the time spent outdoors is still time well spent. For tent camping and basic cabins, proximity to the bathhouse is pretty essential. For cabins with more amenities, you may want to look at the campground map and choose the one closest to where you think you’ll spend more of your time or decide whether you want to be in a quiet area or a more busy one. At Yogi Bear’s Jellystone in Luray, we loved the cabins at the edge of a large field near the outdoor movie theatre and playground. But at Harpers Ferry KOA, we stayed conveniently close to the pool. Greenville Family Farm right here in Haymarket may be a great option for trying out camping but there are no cabins. Our first tent camping experience was at Ramblin Pines in Maryland where we were down the street from the jumping pillow but close to the bathhouse. More recently we camped in Bull Run Regional Park on a cul-de-sac near the bathhouse and the playground. The kids rode bikes and played for hours. There is a nighttime nature walk through the trails and animal adventure groups. My 11-year-old son talked for weeks about the snake he held around his neck and the many creatures we saw in the woods. At least once a week my three-year-old asks when we are going camping again. I was happy to tell her about the reservations we booked at the Cape Charles KOA this July. Our long weekend at this resort campground with a private beach on the Chesapeake Bay is sure to be another opportunity to make cherished memories with the ones we love most. ❖

ith our close proximity to Washington, D.C., many of us take for granted the myriad of historical and free activities available all year round. But right in our backyard is a historical gem with nearly 5,100 acres, 40 miles of hiking over eight different trails, historic buildings, cemeteries, statues, informational placards and cannon, that you can visit time and time again and find something new each visit. Each season the Manassas National Battlefield Park offers new activities and the National Park Service offers a multitude of educational opportunities for adults and children alike. In addition

to the obligatory cannon photos, you’d be surprised how many other things your kids might find photo- (maybe even Instagram-) worthy at the Battlefield. Some of the best kept secrets about the Battlefield are its kids programs designed to get kids unplugged and outdoors. But shhhh, don’t tell them they’ll also learn about history, it might just spoil the fun.

It’s summertime and frogs and tadpoles fill the vernal pools, streams, ponds, and wetlands throughout the battlefield. Be kind and dispose of trash properly to protect them. Plan a trip to the Battlefield this summer and and see what (and who) you and your family can discover.

TRACK Trails

TRACK Trails is a partnership with Kids in Parks where kids can earn prizes by completing and registering their adventures on kidsinparks.com. The Manassas National Battlefield offers two TRACK Trail adventures. The Stone Bridge TRACK Trail Adventure is a 1.3-mile loop along the Bull Run. It showcases the biodiversity of the park and offers history lessons along the way. There are four adventures your kids can track on this trail: Manassas Birds, Nature’s Hide and Seek, Manassas Need for Trees and the Stone Bridge Trail War Tales.

The Manassas National Battlefield

The Brownsville Picnic Area TRACK Trail Adventure is an easy .4-mile loop featuring open field, wetland, and woodland habitat with views of Young’s Branch. The three adventures to track on this trail include Nature’s Hide n’ Seek, Birds of the Greater Washington, D.C. Area and Manassas Need for Trees. The brochures for each trail and adventure can be found online at kidsinparks.com. And if your family likes to travel, they can even find other TRACK Trails across the country to add to their collection. You can grab a trail map at the visitor’s center that highlights the eight different trails and their mileage. Hikes at the Battlefield aren’t technical or steep and most all are easily accessible to young children. There are also horse trails, picnic areas, public restrooms and drinking water accessible to all.

The Scout Ranger Programs provide lots of opportunities for summer fun.

Junior Ranger Program

The Manassas National Battlefield Park Junior Ranger Program is a fun way to keep your child learning about history while exploring the park. This program is for kids three to 12-years-old and takes between one and two hours to complete. There are different activities suggested for different ages. The Junior Ranger book is free and available at the Henry Hill Visitor’s Center, where a guide will explain the book to your child. The book features activities like word searches and puzzles and takes your child through the park to find the answers. When your child finishes the assignments and turns in their completed book, they are sworn in as an official Junior Ranger and receive a badge. Their journey doesn’t end there. The National Park Service has a website called WebRangers that is specifically for kids to learn more about the National Parks. The park volunteers truly love what they do and enjoy answering questions from curious kids.

Scout Ranger Programs

The Scout Ranger Programs are a collaboration of the National Park

Service, Girl Scouts of the United States of America and Boy Scouts of America/Scouts BSA to encourage scouts to participate in educational and/or volunteer service projects in National Parks; to increase awareness of the National Parks; and to provide the opportunity to protect our natural and cultural resources. Through these programs scouts can earn a Resource Stewardship Certificate or Badge at Manassas Battlefield by completing 10 hours of service and the respective requirements for each badge/certificate. Opportunities offered to scouts for these programs include: • Attending a Ranger Lead Tour of the Manassas National Battlefield Park • Attending an environmental educational program • Volunteering for service projects • Completing the Junior Ranger program, and/or • Hiking one or both TRACK Trails

Since these programs are in partnership with the National Parks Service, they don’t need to be completed at the same National Park. Your scout can begin at Manassas National Battlefield and finish at another park. The Scout programs offer additional options that can be tailored to meet a scout or troop’s needs. Living History

If your kids are interested in really seeing what it was like on the Battlefield during the Civil War, there are numerous Living History demonstrations that take place on Henry Hill throughout the summer. Historical reenactors dress in authentic uniforms and this summer the Battlefield offers the 158th anniversary commemoration of the First Manassas [Battle] and the 157th anniversary commemoration of the Second Manassas [Battle]. Rockwood is the eighth restaurant concept owned and operated by the group, each with its own theme and menu. Rockwood serves American cuisine with a menu created by owner and head chef, Mike Cordero. We want to cater to everyone,” said Anthony Cordero. House label wine, family owned, chef-inspired menu, these are not the only things that make Rockwood stand out. All of the food is made-to-order. This means there is no large freezer in the back housing pre-made foods. Each prime rib is cut to order and even the deviled eggs burst with filling made only when ordered. More news on Measles Measles reports have been cropping up in communities across the nation, and Haymarket’s hospital was included in one recent alert in Northern Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health issued a health alert after a patient who visited Haymarket Medical Center on Sunday, June 2, tested positive for measles. Measles is a highly contagious illness that is spread through coughing, sneezing, and contact with droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of an infected individual, health officials noted. The New York Yankees picked Battlefield High School graduate Jake Agnos in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Agnos, a junior left-hander at East Carolina University, was the 135th player taken overall. After a standout season as the Pirates' No. 1 starter, Agnos was projected to go among the top five rounds. Named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and a first-team all-American by Collegiate Baseball, Agnos is 11-2 with 140 strikeouts, 42 walks and a 2.02 ERA in 98 innings.

Agnos also got the win at the doubleelimination NCAA Greenville Regional hosted by top-seeded ECU. He pitched eight innings and struck out nine in the Pirates' 9-2 victory over second-seeded N.C. State. Though he won’t sign until after ECU’s season is over, by being selected where he was by the Yankees, Agnos is slotted to receive a signing bonus of $414,000. Agnos is the seventh Battlefield graduate to be drafted. His selection also marks the third straight season a Battlefield graduate has been drafted.

Residents of Gainesville’s Carver Road community are getting support from Prince William County officials in their effort to preserve the history of the area Carver Road, Old Carolina Road and U.S. Route 29. In June, the county’s planning department will release a draft of the small area plan for the U.S. 29 corridor, including Carver Road, and will host a public hearing in late July, said Planning Director Rebecca Horner. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors is also expected to vote shortly on a proposal by Supervisor Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville, to allocate $55,000 to the Carver Road community to collect oral histories, conduct research and apply for a historic site or district designation. “We have the opportunity now to showcase this historic African-American settlement in Prince William County and preserve the rich history for future generations,” Lawson said.
