ummertime and the living is, well, wary. Wear a mask and venture out or stay home, fight boredom, and stay safe. It’s a conundrum, although even in the best of times I always err on the side of safety. I’m happy to watch my friends zip line, throw themselves out of planes, and bungee jump, but I’m not joining them. I like my fun on the ground, and that’s one of the reasons I love the Summer Fun feature you’ll find on the following pages. It’s filled with great ways to get the kids outside safely so they can play and learn and save their sanity. And parents can save theirs. Despite the fact that the pandemic has put our lives on hold, lots of us are doing a darn good job of making the best of it and even making others’ lives better. Case in point, 11-year-old Zoe Moser of Gainesville. When the stay-at-home order prevented Zoe from visiting nursing homes with members of her church, the award-winning artist and author took it upon herself to create and send greeting cards to residents and the healthcare professionals caring for them. Said Zoe, “I know that some people during this pandemic are sad and lonely. I just wanted to cheer them up.” We’re certain she did. In closing, I want to take one last opportunity to congratulate the Class of 2020 and thank all the parents and grandparents who responded to our survey and shared photos of their beloved graduates. I can’t tell you how much we love seeing their smiling faces! Until next month, stay cool and stay safe.

Summer Writing Challenge at Camp NaNoWriMo BY MATT MCCLELAND

Who can participate?

F

Technically, the age range for participants is 13-17. It has to do with being able to engage with other people in an online forum, which younger writers should do with care and parental supervision. It is also geared toward teenagers who are out of school for the summer and looking for something to do. Does that mean that you can’t participate if you are older or younger than the recommended age? Of course not. Tons of writers find Camp NaNoWriMo to be a valuable writing challenge and outlet. There are also different ways for younger writers to participate which can be found in the NaNoWriMo FAQ on their website, www. nanowrimo.org.

or as long as I can remember, I have wanted to try my hand at writing. I have always loved to read books of all different subjects, but hadn’t really taken the leap into crafting my own. It wasn’t until Fall 2019 that I found out about NaNoWriMo, which stands for National Novel Writing Month. So, what is NaNoWriMo? It’s an annual event that challenges participants to write a 50,000-word novel over the month of November. What you write is completely up to you. All that matters is hitting the 50,000-word mark. Now you might be wondering, “What does an event that takes place in November have to do with a writing camp conducted cover the summer?” Well, I’ll tell you. If NaNoWriMo is the main event of a boxing match, Camp NaNoWriMo is like training for the fight. It is the less stressful midyear preparation that gets you ready for the main challenge at the end of the year. Rather than working toward completing the set goal of 50,000 words in a month, Camp NaNoWriMo allows participants to pick their own goal and then work to achieve it over the month of July. The goal can be anything you want: the real purpose of the camp is to learn to establish a schedule and actually get writing.

{ JULY 2020 |

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

I’m in. What do I do? If you want to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo, go to the NaNoWriMo website and create a free account. Once you are signed up, there will be a spot on the website to announce your project and create your goal. This is known as joining a Cabin. No one is required to join the forums or writing groups that are available, but some participants find it useful to have the support from other writers to talk to during the event. On July 1, you begin. Start working

}

on your project and logging your progress on the website. Once you reach your goal at the end of the month, you will receive a celebration certificate and other goodies that acknowledge your accomplishment. Learning to write on a schedule is difficult, but this challenge makes it easy to come up with a plan and stick to it.

Final thoughts I attempted Camp NaNoWriMo last year and was not able to complete it. While I was discouraged, I felt that it gave me the knowledge I needed for the NaNoWriMo event in November which I completed successfully, writing over 50,000 words. This summer, I am looking forward to accomplishing my goal at Camp NaNoWriMo, and I encourage anyone interested in participating in the main event in November to join me. Not only will it give aspiring writers the chance to challenge themselves to stick to a schedule, write daily, and reach whatever word count they set, but it will give everyone a fun and creative exercise to work on. And if nothing else, it is an excuse to stay inside during those hot July days. ❖ For more about Camp NaNoWriMo and to sign up for an account, visit www.nanowrimo.org.

When and why did you decide to start your own company? KO Distilling was formed on May 31, 2013 by Bill Karlson (the “K”) and John O’Mara (the “O”), who were classmates at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Lovers of gin and bourbon, respectively, John and I wanted to launch our third careers and do something rewarding. KO opened to the public on September 12, 2015.

and look forward to riding it throughout the community.

How does your business serve the local community? KO employs 16 local residents to make and sell our spirits. We are a great travel/tourism destination. We provide guided tours, tastings, bottle sales, and special events at our distillery. Since April, KO has been mass-producing hand sanitizer to help with the COVID-19 crisis. To date, KO has donated over $20,000 worth of hand sanitizer to the local community. We have plenty if any local business needs some.

Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? I’m a Board Member of the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Distillers Association, and Greater Prince William Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) – Children’s Intervention Services (CIS). KO Distilling also supports numerous local nonprofits because we want to give something back, but also make people aware of what we do in the community.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. By far, the best moment is seeing a customer smiling when he/she tastes our spirits for the first time. Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? After my wife Theresa and I moved to Piedmont a year ago, I joined the HGBA. I have enjoyed

What is your favorite restaurant? My wife Theresa and I are big fans of Jimbo’s Grill. What is your favorite local high school sports team? I’ll have to go with Battlefield. Have not yet had a chance to go to any games yet though.

Laurel and Bowie, MD, respectively. KO Distilling brought us here. We love the Piedmont community. Personally, I love a 10-mile commute, which I never had before.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? (1) location, location, location; (2) be prepared to play the longgame, which is definitely true in the whiskey business as it takes years to age spirits, and (3) never sacrifice quality over quantity.

What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Spring. As a lifelong Orioles fan, I relish the start of baseball season, although COVID has made spring less enjoyable this year for all of us.

Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? My wife Theresa and I are from

What are some hobbies you enjoy? Golf. I also just bought a new bike from Haymarket Bicycles

What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job out of college was working on a deep-sea tugboat in the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and California. My most interesting job though was working for Stanley, Inc. for 26 years. Watching Stanley grow from a handful of employees to a publicly traded one with 5,000 employees was quite a ride. ❖

THROW SOME SHADE We miss the sun when it’s not out, and while it’s crucial in keeping us warm and helping produce vitamin D, too much sun can also get you in a lot of trouble. It’s easy to forget how long you have been basking in it while drinking mimosas and enjoying your meal. That is why shade at your table is so important. Whether sticking up through your table or hanging over from the side, a market umbrella is a necessity for extended outdoor dining. They’re available in numerous colors and styles and, if you have a question about how large an umbrella you need, consider getting the next size up. PRO TIP

12

{ JULY 2020 |

There are a lot of options on the market, but no matter which you choose make sure to get a really solid anchor/base. The force generated by a sufficiently strong wind can cause significant damage should your umbrella come loose. Other good upgrades include a tilt option and upgraded fabric. If your umbrella has a replaceable cover consider getting an extra at the time of order. It is no fun trying to find a replacement a few years after the model has been discontinued.

This is an excellent option for commercial establishments with distinctive branding they wish to reinforce.

STAY SAFE OUT THERE Safety is as always a primary concern. Make sure that your grill or other cooking device is located a safe distance from the house. Often we see warped siding where someone disregarded that advice, and they were lucky to damage only the siding. Live flame from a candle can be very romantic, but consider replacing it with a floating wick drawing olive oil sitting on top of water. Not only does the oil not catch on fire, but if knocked over the water will extinguish the small flame on the wick. Fire bowls are a portable alternative to a fire pit. Easy to move and typically safer, you can add a decorative ring and watch the flickering flame dance ephemerally into the night making whatever shapes are cut into it. PRO TIP

Zoe Moser spreads cheer during the pandemic BY HANNAH SAMLALL

T

here have been many community responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants are offering delivery and curbside pick-up. Businesses are offering complimentary services to first responders. Teachers are giving lessons virtually. Retired healthcare professionals are coming out of retirement to help fight the virus. The list of stories goes on and on. Every small gesture has helped to remind us that there are always people helping in the darkest of times. Those people all deserve to be recognized, but we’ll start with Zoe Moser. Zoe is an 11-year-old who has taken it upon herself to do something to lift spirits during these trying times. Born in North Carolina, Zoe started visiting local nursing homes with her church when she was just 4 years old.”They would go make cards and do crafts with the elderly,” Shamika Moser, Zoe’s mom, said. “We moved to Gainesville five years ago and our home church has the same type of program.” The Mosers attend Word Alive Church in Manassas. Since the mandated shutdown caused by the coronavirus, Zoe and the other members of the church were no longer able to visit those in the nursing homes. Zoe, who is passionate about art and has won several art awards through school, knew she had to do something to make sure the residents knew that someone was thinking about them.”I wanted to make the cards for nursing home residents and healthcare professionals because I know that some people during this pandemic are sad and lonely,” Zoe said. “I just wanted to cheer them up.” Once the residents and healthcare professionals received the first cards, Zoe’s initiative began to snowball. Requests started coming in asking her to send cards all over the country. At this point, Zoe has sent cards to Texas, California, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Tennessee, and Maryland. In addition to nursing homes, Zoe has sent cards to healthcare professionals, incarcerated individuals, and residents of homeless shelters in Washington D.C. But how would she keep it up? Zoe knew she needed to find a way to fund her project in order to keep purchasing supplies.

“I wanted to make cards for nursing home residents and healthcare professionals because I know that some people during this pandemic are sad and lonely,” said 11 year-old Zoe Moser of Gainesville. “I just wanted to cheer them up.”

That’s when she got the idea to sell the goal planning workbook she’d written two years ago. Called “The Million Dollar Project,” the workbook is the result of “a vision board activity Zoe did at church,” said her mom. “From her vision board, she created a step-by-step process to help people of all ages achieve their goals.” All proceeds from purchases of the book go toward buying craft and shipping supplies for the card initiative. “I wanted to write The Million Dollar Project to help people achieve success in seven easy steps like I did,” Zoe said. “And I want people to know that if you join The Zoe Project we can spread cheer and change the world one card at a time.” When Zoe isn’t making cards or doing her school work, you can find her packing up book orders, working on her website, reading, baking, dancing, singing, or going to church. Her favorite subject is math. “In 10 years, I see myself in college being successful,” Zoe said. You can follow along with and participate in The Zoe Project on Instagram (@_thezoeproject_) and on Facebook. The Million Dollar Project is available for purchase on her website at the thamosers.com and is also for sale on Amazon Prime. Customers who order on the website pay shipping, but receive free personalized gifts as a thank you. Amazon Prime members receive free shipping. ❖

sweet sweet summertime

BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

I

t’s pretty much a guarantee that this summer will be unlike any we’ve had in previous years. All of us moms and dads have already had months and months of trying to entertain our children, long before summer began. Since many of us are probably suffering “creativity fatigue,” we asked Julia Carney of Mountainside Montessori School in Marshall for her suggestions on fun stuff to do this summer. For starters, says Carney, it’s important to understand your child’s stages of development when planning activities. “Younger children live in the present and don’t realize what is missing. They play and

A combination of old fashioned fun and today’s technology will get you, and your kids, through the summer.

learn through movement. Older kids need the feeling of being part of a community.” Try to maintain social interaction for middle schoolers as much as you can, says Carney, even if it’s by video chat. This is also a great time for them to deepen connections with family and connecting with adults in their lives. It can be very hard to get older kids involved in activities, but enlisting them to help teach younger siblings things like how to jump rope or hopscotch can draw the teens in and they’ll even have a good time. She urges parents to sometimes take a step back and let kids figure out things themselves. “It gives them a sense of accomplishment,” she explains. “Kids are used to being busy with structure, and some kids will be bored because they aren’t used to it. But sometimes boredom is what fuels creativity,” says Carney. But for some things, it might be necessary to show them how to enjoy offline activities. For instance, they’ll probably be thrilled to spray their brother with the hose once they see you do it. Here are a few more thoughts for summer fun in case you are completely out of ideas.

give back: Consider

volunteer work in a way that is safe. Volunteer at a food pantry or bring an elderly neighbor dinner. Express appreciation for grocery store employees, the mailman, etc. Older kids can give parents of younger children a break by video chatting with the little ones for a while; they will be delighted to have someone besides their parents to talk to. These kinds of activities will make kids feel more connected to their community.

use technology: Make

use of technology to give new life to old fashioned, fun, offline experiences. Remember lemonade stands? Replace it with an Etsy shop selling crafts. Order crafts and supplies for friendship bracelets and origami, then learn to make them through Youtube videos. Remember putting on plays as a child? Older children can make their own videos of their own parts and digitally compile them with their friends’ for a complete performance. Kids desperately need this kind of social, collaborative experience right now.

bonding with pets: The benefits of

children owning pets — of any size — cannot be overstated. Pets awaken them to a whole new world of living beings that are so different from humans. Caring for something that is totally dependent on them teaches kids responsibility, empathy, and how to show affection. They have been shown to relieve stress and have a positive correlation with academic success. We’re not suggesting going out and getting a first time pet (unless you want one!), but if you have a pet already, kids can spend more time with them by grooming, walking, reading to them, and playing ball. Older kids can dive into the world of animal training by learning how to teach the dog new tricks. And don’t forget your big pets — horses and other farm animals can always use the extra attention too. Big or small, your pet will relish the extra time with their humans! ❖

Landon, Grayson, & Hudson Norman exploring nature. “We’ve been taking a lot of short shaded hikes to creeks we can splash in” said mom Lindsey.

water games: Running

through the sprinkler in the yard and experimenting with all the settings. With parental supervision, fill a plastic pool with water and have boat races. Maybe they can even make the boats themselves by learning origami.

fishing and nature walks:

With state and local parks opening up, there are a host of opportunities for families to take day trips. Silver Lake in Gainesville is a great place to fish or let kids play in the little beach section where they can see tiny fish and search for turtles. There is a huge, very old turtle who mysteriously appears near the pier when and if he feels like sticking his head out of the water. In Fauquier County, try the Riverside Preserve.

gardening: Growing things in the

garden is appropriate for all age groups. Herbs are great — younger children will be thrilled to see the seed sprout and grow, and older children can smell and taste them and decide how to use them in cooking.

cooking: Make homemade

lemonade and popsicles with younger kids. Older ones can help plan and make dinner. This makes them feel like a valuable member of the family and increases confidence, says Carney.

fort building: Indoor pillow forts are

great for younger kids, and more complicated and creative outdoor ones are fun as they get older. Parents should resist helping, other than making sure no dangerous materials are involved. Let them figure it out themselves with their imagination. Don’t go buy your kid a playhouse from Walmart…the building and creating of the fort is the fun part, and it’s beneficial to their development. A playhouse plunked in the yard will grow old very quickly.

socially distance games with neighbors: Flashlight tag can be played

from afar, as well as hopscotch when each kid draws in their own driveway. “Mother May I” and “Simon Says” can be played together from across the street. Jump roping, hula hoops, and scooter races can be competitions from afar.

rock painting: Rock painting is a craft families have enjoyed for years. Now, some are taking it a step further by painting words of kindness on the rocks and leaving them around the neighborhood for others to discover. obstacle course: One year we found

a Ninja Warrior Course kit on sale and set it up for my son’s birthday party; they had so much fun. But you don’t need a kit to create an obstacle course. Cones, ropes or yarn, hoola hoops, and whatever you can find in the garage can be used to create a course to let kids get their energy out.

Claire, Ashton, and Graham Everett spend lots of time in the summer tending their chickens and manning their neighborhood egg stand.

What to DIY, and what not to DIY? THAT IS THE QUESTION. You’re home. You have access to YouTube and its zillions of tutorials. But should you really install that ceiling fan or replace the bathroom faucet by yourself? There are many for whom the answer to those questions would be “heck yes!” But there are just as many others (like me) who can’t do something as simple as hang a curtain rod without assistance. So which projects should you leave to the pros and which could you probably do yourself? We posed that question — and several others — to six local home improvement pros. Here’s what they had to say.

Lifestyle Magazine (LM): What are some of the most common kinds of home improvement projects your company handles? TIM BURCH (TB): Our most common remodeling projects are whole house remodels. DAVID ELPHEE (DE): Our company

offers plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical services.

VALERIE GIBSON (VG): The most

common projects we complete include bathroom and kitchen remodels, deck and porch projects, trim carpentry projects, exterior maintenance such as

painting, caulking, and trim repairs, and handyman/home maintenance repairs.

KIM JENKINS (KJ): Bathrooms, roofing, siding, window replacements, decks and insurance restoration.

STEPHANIE KENNEDY (SK):

Large scale additions, kitchen and master bath remodels.

CHURCH MATTHEWS (CM):

We handle everything from a simple appliance replacement to a full kitchen design with cabinets and appliances.

DANIEL SOUTHARD (DS): Interior and exterior paint, rotten wood repair, kitchen and bath remodels.

What are some of the more specialized or unique services your company offers? TB: We have some of the best trim carpenters in the nation on our in-house staff. Detailed, one of a kind interiors are unique to us. DE: Our specialty in all three trades is service itself. The feedback we hear from our customers time and time again is how much they liked our people, their skill and knowledge as well as how friendly, courteous, clean, and professional they are. If a customer has a problem with any of our work, we will correct it, simple as that. We have been around for 44 years, we are easy to reach, and we are here to stay. When we say that we will stand behind our work, that really means something. VG: We offer a variety of services to help homeowners care for

and improve their homes. One of our main specialties is helping homeowners plan and prioritize their projects to help them balance between the “must-dos” and the “want-tos,” so they maximize the return on their home improvement dollars. Some of the more unique projects we have completed include a custom Italian marble tile floor, built-in mudroom lockers, a creek bridge, and an outdoor screened shed that served as a screened-in porch for a client’s weekend property.

KJ: Disinfectant services along with water mitigation, mold remediation and

insurance loss clean up. We are able to show up at the scene, secure the client’s home and belongings, work with their insurance agency and adjusters, complete the demo and the repairs. Having one company stand by you during such a time ensures you don't miss a step in the process, protects you by having all repairs that you are entitled to be paid for by the insurance company and gives you one point of contact from beginning to end.

SK: Aging in place/universal design and NKBA (National Kitchen Bath Association)

certified people on staff which ensures the most efficient and ADA compliant (accessible) space – which enables individuals with physical handicaps to live as comfortably as possible. Our architectural department is full of talented designers and craftsmen who are passionate about the projects they work on.

CM: We offer a wide offering of brands of appliances and cabinetry. We sell more

appliance brands than we show on the floor. We have a wide variety of cabinet lines that represent entry level to high end. It is a one stop shop for cabinetry and appliances. We also offer all types of countertops.

DS: Custom build out, custom crown molding, custom tile.

What are some of the most common kinds of home improvement projects you see homeowners attempt to tackle themselves, only to end up calling you in to save the day? TB: Rescues: We have an entire division of the company dedicated to rescue projects

that homeowners or bad contractors have gotten into trouble trying to complete. My advice is to call the pros.

DE: We often get called in after a do-it-yourselfer has tried to install a new fixture, like a faucet, ceiling fan, or thermostat. Oftentimes homeowners don’t have the right tools, or their tools aren’t quite up to the job. Not only do we have the right tools, we have the expertise and know-how to do the job right. VG: Bathroom remodels are definitely the most common. They often appear to be

deceivingly easy and simple and many television shows add to that simplistic view. Once they are in the throes of the project, many homeowners find it’s more timeconsuming and labor-intensive than they thought. And it requires a lot of patience. Some stages also require more experience and skill sets than meets the eye. Another common project is interior painting. It can take more time and effort than you might think. We have had many homeowners tell us that they have painted themselves in the past and will never go through the headache again.

KJ: Bathrooms seem to be a big one! How can a little room be so challenging? Well, TV makes it look easier than it is. Once the demo is started, plywood may be rotted, the floor may not be level, mold may be discovered....the list goes on. The second would be decks. Decks must be built to code and be secured to the home properly with flashing to avoid water damage inside or built free standing with the proper structural components in place for safety. Many homeowners who purchase a home with a deck want to have it resurfaced. Oftentimes this can be done but sometimes the existing deck is in no shape to resurface and therefore a new one needs to be built in its place.

SK: Installing cabinetry or removing walls. There is so much skill and engineering knowledge that is needed to take on these projects efficiently and safely. If you plan to do something yourself make sure everything is planned and ordered prior to starting. CM: Most of our DIY customers are fairly savvy. Where we see a lot of challenges

though is when they try to cut corners, use the same hoses or the same wiring. The other area that is often overlooked is surge protection. Not all surge protectors are alike. Strip surge protectors must be divided by the number of outlets. Appliance surge protectors prevent the small surges that are usually unnoticeable and over time degrade the electronics in the appliances. We suggest one for microwaves, washers, dishwashers, washers, and freezers.

DS: Plumbing and electric, roof leaks.

What kind of projects should do-it-yourselfers never undertake on their own? TB: DIY-ers should never try to handle the

MEP's (mechanical, electrical and plumbing). Those jobs done incorrectly are dangerous.

DE: There are several things to consider here. Skill level, proper tools, and weighing the consequences of a job gone wrong. It is important to understand that there can be tragic outcomes when a job of any trade is not done right. Natural gas and propane can be explosive under the right conditions. Refrigerant gases can asphyxiate. Plumbing can become unsanitary, and a flood can devastate a home. Miswired circuits or appliances can start a fire or electrocute. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work is best left to professionals. VG: Unless they happen to be very handy, I

would advise against bathroom and kitchen remodels. They really are quite complicated and require a great deal of skill and time. If your skills and experience are limited, they end up taking even more time or may not be possible to complete. Quality can also suffer as many of the skill sets involved in a kitchen or bath remodel take years of experience to develop.

KJ: Additions. They’re very extensive and

need architects, engineering, and can be dangerous if not tied into the existing home. Additionally, anything electrical could be dangerous and all of this has to be tied into your main panel so you need to know if the addition will support it. Roofing is another "get a pro" project. Most roofs are fairly high off of the ground plus there are so many components of the roof and if anything is done incorrectly or left out, it could result in serious water damage. The deck of the roof is also important. If plywood isn’t in good condition and the house is not ventilated properly, the heat can cause damage and in rare cases fire. SK: Trades like plumbing and electrical should be subbed out when possible.

CM: As I said before, there are a lot of capable individuals around here but if they are going to do a project and there is any doubt, they should have a professional do it. Appliances today are more sophisticated, more expensive, and more susceptible to installation errors. DS: Replacement windows and doors, electric and plumbing, roof repair, gutter cleaning.

KJ: Be patient with yourself and what you may find. You may discover things that are not up to code so have a contingency fund. Do your research. Be sure to know the products you are using. You can save on labor but be cautious about saving on material. Know the age of your home and make sure you test for lead paint and asbestos in plaster or popcorn ceilings. Construction is a craft, have fun with it. And finally, don't forget to admire your accomplishment!

Any words of advice for homeowners determined to “do-it-themselves”? TB: Determined to do it yourself? Pull a

building permit so at the very least the job can be inspected by a trained municipal inspector.

DE: If you must do it yourself, do your homework first. Make sure you fully understand the process and each step of what you are going to attempt. Also, check with your local building authority to see if you need a permit. Use the proper tools. Put safety first. VG: If you ever plan to sell your home, be very careful of the projects you take on yourself. If your intention is to increase the value of your home, you may end up doing the opposite. It’s a great rule of thumb to always view your home projects through the eye of a discerning buyer. They are often looking for a quality level that a non-professional would not be able to achieve. If the quality is lacking, buyers may be deterred from buying your home or view it as a project that needs to be redone and may offer less or request money towards repairs.

SK: If you do plan to do something

Porch Portraits Snapshots of love and positivity during the pandemic

BY FRANNIE BARNES PHOTOS COURTESY BROOKE ELIZABETH ARTISTRY

W

hen you look through your social media feeds, you can’t help but notice the sweet pictures of families sitting together on their front stoop or front lawn, arms around one another. These “porch portraits” as they’re known, have become the norm during this time of quarantine. Nuclear families, stuck in the house together, get gussied up for a fun and appropriately socially distanced photo session they’ll never forget. Brooke Elizabeth is one of the photographers committed to capturing these porch portraits. She is also the manager of Three Ways Beautiful Salon in Gainesville and when the stay-at-home orders were implemented and small businesses shuttered, she felt compelled to do something to help. Understanding the needs of small businesses, she knew that closing doors could lead to potential disaster for many – not just the businesses themselves – but the many staff they employ. She decided to use her talent as a way to spread the word to support local business. Each porch portrait she has taken has been free of charge with one request: that the family photographed support a local business by grabbing take out, purchasing something for pick up, or simply buying a gift card. All she asks is that people simply pay it forward. Brooke started her hobby about twenty years ago. She loves the art of photography, and uses it as a tool for her salon as well, snapping pics of freshly colored and styled works of art. But it’s also been a creative tool to connect with younger clients or daughters of clients. She has been working with teens and tweens doing hair and makeup while spending time talking and helping them with self-esteem. She takes photos after they’ve worked together so they can see themselves through different eyes.

Brooke took portraits of families in Ashburn, Bristow, Centreville, Haymarket, Gainesville, and Woodbridge. Maybe more, but she can’t recall. She does, however, recall sweet Dylan, shown here hugging his brother. Dylan was wrapping up his chemotherapy treatments when his parents asked her to photograph him on their front lawn. They got sweet photos. Dylan got a two-hour parade led by the fire department!

Everyone Has a Story Brooke has learned some very unique stories of what this pandemic has taken from, given to, or taught people. Through her porch project, Brooke has found a way to capture these stories in special ways. There are the teens who didn’t have their high school graduation but still have signs in the yard. There are the neighbors who’ve bonded together and hang out in their driveways to have some social normalcy since they can’t go inside each other’s homes. It all started though, with a young boy named Dylan who was nowhere near his family’s front porch. Dylan was in the hospital wrapping up his chemo treatments when his parents contacted Brooke about taking photos of him and his brother on the family’s front steps. Because of the COVID-19 safety restrictions, when Dylan was done in the hospital, he didn’t get the opportunity to ring the bell, a customary tradition signifying the end of treatment. But what seemed like a loss turned into a gift, as the neighborhood gathered

for an almost two-hour parade led by first responders including members of the fire department who made sure, since he missed out on ringing the hospital bell, that he got to ring the fire bell. Brooke and her fiancé were honored to be part of Dylan’s parade – something she said might not have happened if it weren’t for the porch project. “People have been so nice and so kind,” she said.

Strike a Pose You’ll notice that some photos are themed while others are simple. Brooke works with the families and tells them they can keep it as simple or as creative as they want. And speaking of creativity, nothing has stopped Brooke from taking a picture. Her fiancé has driven her all over Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, and Fairfax counties to take pictures. She’s had to create maps with a strategy to hit everyone she can in an efficient way and even the rain hasn’t held her back. She’s taken some from the passenger side with her zoom lens! “It’s such an odd time for everybody and it has affected people in many different ways. People are together 24 hours a day and their daily lives have changed. I hope the families will keep the photos, frame them,

From families with cute pups to graduates with big plans, Brooke’s porch portraits capture our hope and positivity despite the pandemic. and remember the positivity and unity of family. There’s always a silver lining to every unfortunate situation,” Brooke said. Brooke has a huge heart and finds joy by helping others however she can. As I interviewed her, I mentioned a local mom who was about to undergo chemotherapy and wanted to capture the time before she

begins treatment. Brooke jumped at the chance to help, rearranged her schedule, and made it happen the very next day. They say that during times like these you see people’s true colors. It’s rare to see a rainbow, but if you’ve had the opportunity to meet, have photos taken by, or speak with Brooke, you understand that feeling. ❖

Tap Into A Healthier Life. Safe water is better. Chlorine protects water from bacteria until you are ready to drink it - much like how plastic wrap protects your packaged food. But you get rid of the wrapper before you eat the food, right? So why drink the chlorine? While chlorine does a great job of eliminating most pathogens from the water we drink, this powerful chemical has a downside when it comes to drinking it.
