MOLES, MALIGNANCY AND MELANOMA Know the signs of melanoma and how to protect your skin BY SUSAN TULINO, NOVANT HEALTH UVA HEALTH SYSTEM
H
eading into the warm summer months means exchanging our winter clothes for t-shirts and swimwear. In Virginia’s hot, humid summer months, many of us share the same mindset: the less fabric we have to wear, the better. But this means that we’re exposing more of our skin to potentially harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Though dangerous sun exposure can happen year-round, the temptation to bare skin in the summer prompts Michael Perez, MD, a family medicine and aesthetics physician at Novant Health UVA Health System Bull Run Family Medicine – Manassas, to remind us of the signs and symptoms of melanoma. WHAT IS MELANOMA? Melanoma is a skin cancer that typically begins within a melanocyte skin cell in the top layer of skin, the epidermis. It is commonly caused by UV rays, which can damage the DNA in our skin cells. Damage to the DNA can affect certain genes that control how skin cells grow and divide. When these genes don’t work properly, the affected cells may become cancerous. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that rates of

melanoma have been rising for the last 30 years, and estimates that nearly 96,500 Americans will be diagnosed with some form of the disease this year. Risk factors that might make someone more prone to melanoma include: • Frequent UV exposure • Moles • Fair skin, freckles and light hair • Family or personal history • Weakened immune system Despite these factors, skin cancer is not discriminatory — anyone of any age, ethnicity or gender can get melanoma. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Fortunately, many cases of melanoma can be detected early through regular self-exams and by paying attention to any new moles or dark spots on the body. Dr. Perez recommends using the “ABCDE rule” as a guide, and seeing your doctor if any of the following apply to a new or changing mole: • Asymmetry • Border is irregular, ragged or blurry • Color is not consistent • Diameter is larger than 6 millimeters across • Evolving in size, shape and/or color “Melanoma doesn’t always manifest in these ways and

can be surprisingly subtle, so it’s important to visit a doctor with any uncertainties,” said Moira Sutton, MD, a radiation oncologist at Novant Health UVA Health System Cancer Center at Lake Manassas. “If skin cancer is diagnosed early enough, it usually means less invasive treatments — malignant moles can be removed in quick outpatient procedures by a physician or a dermatologist — and have a very high likelihood of survival. Early detection also means a much lower chance that the cancer has spread, which is where more aggressive treatment becomes necessary.” In fact, the ACS reports that the five-year relative survival rate is 98 percent for localized melanoma — melanoma that hasn’t spread beyond the skin where it began. “Despite high survival rates, melanoma is not to be taken lightly,” said Dr. Sutton. “It’s a serious diagnosis that takes thousands of lives each year.” PREVENTION MEASURES “One of the easiest ways to prevent melanoma is to take precautions against UV rays and limiting direct sun exposure,” said Dr. Perez. “Sun exposure adds up day after day, so shelter and clothing are your first lines
of defense. Seek out shady spots, wear hats, keep your skin covered with light materials and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them,” said Perez. “Avoiding the sun altogether isn’t a realistic option for most of us, but getting in the habit of wearing sunscreen every day is your second line of defense,” said Dr. Perez. “Be sure to read labels and fully understand the strength and limitations of the sunscreen you’re using. Applying a sunscreen/ sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 provides the best protection. It is also important to select a product that blocks both UVA and UVB light such as Titanium Dioxide with Oxxybenzone.” Dr. Perez reminds us that even waterproof sunscreens should be reapplied after taking a dip. While sunscreen doesn’t block all UV rays, do your skin and overall health a favor and slather it on before you head outside. There is no 100 percent foolproof way to avoid melanoma. Unfortunately, even the most vigilant can receive a diagnosis. But, by taking steps to protect your skin all year, and especially in the summer, you can greatly reduce your chances of a melanoma diagnosis. ❖

PRINTING WITH RECYCLABLES
s an art teacher, I’m always saving things that might otherwise be tossed right into the garbage. I figure that if I get one more use out of something, it’s better for the environment. Styrofoam trays are a perfect example. I’ve read that they don’t decompose for 500 years. Eek! So, let’s teach children about reducing, recycling, and in this case, reusing. For this activity, wash and set aside some items that would otherwise be tossed or recycled. We’re going to be printing with these odds and ends. Look for things that will make a variety of interesting shapes. Anything you can dip into paint and press onto a surface is printmaking! Now, the thicker the paper you use, the less wrinkling you’ll have after the projects are dry. That being said, this craft can be done on any type of paper. So, if all you have is basic printer paper, use that. For added fun, purchase a set of blank cards and envelopes and print on those. You’ll need craft paint and a paper plate or Styrofoam tray for a palette. Put some small amounts of paint on your palette, then press the found objects into the paint and then onto the paper. My best tip here is to use a thin layer of paint! Too much and you’ll wind up with unwanted blobs. Practice on scrap paper to get the feel of it. Then you’ll feel ready to go to your nicer paper. Be creative with color and pattern. Experiment with putting more than one color on your object. If you’re decorating blank cards, try printing stripes and borders. I love the idea of making stationery because it enhances the notion of spreading joy as you send some snail-mail to friends and family. I’d love to see what you and your family make. BATTLE SUMMER BOREDOM AT THE LIBRARY BY MELINDA CASILLI
E
very summer when our kids were little, my husband and I would place bets on how long it would take before one of them moaned they were bored. When my youngest was still in elementary school, I was shocked when she ran excitedly off the bus on the last day of school and two and a half hours later announced she was bored. Really? Already? If she was bored after a couple of hours, it was going to be a very long summer. Instead, that year, we took full advantage of the Prince William County Library System’s Summer Reading program. We read all kinds of “Just for Fun” books and attended many special programs. We busted boredom and the library programs have been a summer staple for our family ever since. This year’s Summer Reading theme is “A Universe of Stories.” The program runs from June 11 to August 11. Each week, we will have free activities and special programs scheduled. Participants can sign up by going to the library website, pwcgov. org/library, or when visiting the library. Once registered, participants 0 to 18 years receive a game card to track their progress. The cards have 25 squares, each with a different activity. Simply mark an “X” on completed squares to track progress. For those who prefer a digital method of tracking progress, Beanstack is available online or by downloading the mobile app. Prizes are given when participants first sign up, then beginning June 17, prizes will be awarded after five activity squares are completed and then after 10 activity squares, participants get a free book and an entry into the grand prize drawing. They’ll receive a bonus entry into the grand prize drawing after completing the entire game card. The grand prize for children is a littleBits set and for teens it’s a Target gift card. ❖

Haymarket preschool celebrates 30 years of childhood education STAFF CONTRIBUTED
H
aymarket Baptist Church Preschool celebrated its 30th anniversary in May and director Laurie Frasz and her team didn’t let it pass without an appropriate fuss. A party gathered current and former students and their families for a celebratory blowout on May 18. “We started in 1989 as a ministry of the church, with two classrooms, two teachers and one teaching assistant,” said Frasz. One hundred and forty students were on the rolls when Frasz started at the school in 2004. Now, 300 children attend. Twenty classes of students – 2, 3, 4, and 5 years old – use ten classrooms. There are morning, afternoon and all-day classes available; some are two days a week, some three days and some five days a week. At the request (or maybe, demand) of pre-school parents, kindergarten was added in 2006. Three classrooms of 12 kindergarten students currently attend the Haymarket Baptist school. “Those first kindergarten kids are graduating from high school this year,” said Frasz. Core values Frasz and her staff have a clear vision for the preschool. “Number one, parents need to know you love their children, and they need to feel, ‘my child is safe here.’ “ In 2018, Haymarket Baptist Preschool received its second
five-year accreditation by the Association of Christian Schools International. “We took three years to prepare for that first accreditation,” said Frasz. “We wanted to make sure that we thought through everything and had all our T’s crossed. It was an intense process.” All teachers have some early education training. Several earned degrees in other specialties – business or journalism, for instance – then returned to school for early childhood education. Several teachers have master’s degrees and all pursue annual continuing education credits. Frasz said that teachers strive to give their students a good foundation; they hope to instill a joy in learning and a love of God. The goal is to serve their students’ spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical needs, she said. A place for learning All classrooms at Haymarket Baptist are neatly organized. They have to be. Most serve double duty, hosting one group of kids in the morning and
another in the afternoon. Between sessions, everything is put back in its place, ready for the next class of eager learners. It’s clear that spaces are designed to encourage equal portions of fun and learning. Bible stories adorn the walls, alongside colorful cartoon-y drawings featuring letters, numbers and science lessons. Two playgrounds, one for little ones and one for older children, offer a safe, exciting place to run, jump and play. There is even a figure-eight bike track and kidsized bikes and trikes. Families are welcome at Haymarket Baptist Preschool. In fact, parents are required to provide a certain number of volunteer hours to the school each year. “One of my favorite things that we do are our seasonal programs,” Frasz said. Moms arrive at school for “Muffins with Mom,” a “Mommy and Me Spa” or a Mother’s Day tea. Dads get plenty of love to, at “Dessert with
Daddy,” an arts and crafts project where Dad and child create a “World’s Best Dad” tie and a “Decorate with Dad” Christmas decorating session. In addition to teachers and parents, students have another partner on their team – Haymarket Baptist Church. Frasz said that although the school, a separate 501-c3, controls its own finances, the school and the church work together often. Pastor Mark Olson meets with teachers to pray each morning and visits with the children several times a month. Pastor Olson’s office is next to the school’s music room. “I love to listen to the children singing,” he said. An extra-special feature of the school is an after-school enrichment program. Parents can choose to register their children for gymnastics, Spanish, tae kwon do, or fun science lessons. A running club, Lego club, art and cooking classes or Daisy Troop are other options. The 30th anniversary celebration on May 18 had the feel of a family reunion, as teachers welcomed back more than a dozen members of the school’s first kindergarten class, now graduating from high school. Frasz gushed over each one; she remembered them as they were when they were “littles.” All those students who attended are heading to college – James Madison, Virginia Tech, Radford, Liberty University – and one will be heading to West Point. Frasz marveled at how much the students have grown since they started kindergarten in 2004. Just like the students, she said, “Our school has changed so much over the years. We grew as the community grew.”❖

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to help a mother of four. She was in need of clothing for her children. I reached out to friends and neighbors and before I knew it, I had enough clothes to fill my SUV twice! After this experience I realized there are lots of families who could truly benefit from receiving quality clothing, and there are amazing people willing and eager to give. Thus, the idea for Boxes of Basics was born. How does Boxes of Basics serve the local community?
We provide local children in need with a box of new and gently used clothing in their size. Each box contains an entire seasonal wardrobe: five school outfits, three play outfits, one Sunday “best” outfit, three pairs of pajamas, a jacket, new socks and underwear. Clothing donations are collected from the community, and volunteers sort and pack each box, wrapping each outfit individually so the child feels like they’re opening a gift when they receive their box.

I’m a new member and have already benefited from my membership. Other members are so supportive and willing to lend a hand. Several have connected me to other people in the community that have supported Boxes of Basics. It’s like having my own marketing and networking team!
What are some hobbies you enjoy?
I love spending time with my family, exploring new places locally and traveling. I also love reading and any activity near or on the water.
What are the top three business tips and tricks you can offer other professionals?
Be brave. Starting a new venture is scary, but you have to put yourself and your ideas out there. Gather the facts. Before making a decision or jumping to a conclusion make sure you gather all of the facts. Practice grace and patience. Life and business often present you with challenging situations. I met my husband while working as a lifeguard in high school. He bet that I couldn’t save him if he sank to the bottom of the diving well. I took on the challenge, l “saved” him and we have been married almost 15 years. ❖

Ingredients: 2 cups water 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon corn syrup

Ingredients - Pickled Red Onions: 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup rice vinegar 1/2 cup water 1 jalapeno, halved lengthwise 2 medium red onions, sliced DIRECTIONS: Combine sugar, vinegar and water in a saucepan and heat until the sugar is dissolved. Add jalapeno and red onions and remove from heat. Allow to cool, then place in a covered dish and chill. Ingredients – Burgers: 1 poblano chile 1 tablespoon milk 1 slice of bread, torn
CILANTRO GUACAMOLE RECIPE BY HAYLEY WHITE
into pieces 1 1/2 tablespoons minced cilantro 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1lb 80/20 ground beef DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the broiler. Place the chiles on a foil-lined baking sheet and broil for 8 minutes, turning after 6 minutes. They’ll be blackened. Place the peppers in a zip top bag let them stand for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes open the bags, remove the peppers, and peel the skins. They will come off easily. Remove the ribs and seeds and chop up the peppers. 2. In a bowl combine the milk, bread, chopped chiles, 1 1/2
tablespoons cilantro, cumin, paprika, and salt and pepper to taste. Add beef and combine, then form 4 patties. Grill 3-5 minutes per side. Ingredients - Chipotle Cream Sauce: 1/2 cup light sour cream 1 lime- zested and juiced 1 chipotle chile in adobo, minced 1 teaspoon of the sauce from the chiles in adobo
¼ cup packed fresh Genovese or Italian basil leaves
DIRECTIONS 1. Bring water to boil. 2. Drop the basil leaves in for 20 seconds, then remove. 3. Add sugar and corn syrup to the water, bring to boil until the sugar and corn syrup are dissolved. 4. Let cool a bit. Transfer into a plastic container, and put in the fridge to cool down. 5. Mash the blanched basil with a mortar and pestle, or blend in a small blender or ninja, until it is a paste consistency. 6. Once the syrup is completely cool (refrigerator temperature), add the basil paste and stir to combine. 7. Transfer to ice cream or sorbet machine and process, or, if you don’t have one: 8. Pour a very thin layer of the mixture onto a cookie sheet. Place in freezer until completely frozen. 9. Shave the frozen mixture from the cookie sheet with a metal scraper. 10. Serve immediately with a slice of watermelon.
DIRECTIONS: Combine sour cream, lemon zest and juice, chile and sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir and set aside until the burgers are ready.
Ingredients: 4 ripe avocados 1 bunch of cilantro 3 roma tomatoes 1 yellow or red onion 2 fresh or pickled jalapenos juice of 2 limes garlic powder salt pepper DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare your ingredients: dice the onion, tomatoes, and jalapenos, and mince the cilantro leaves. Slice the limes in half. Remove the avocado from the skin and remove the pits (reserve one pit) 2. Slice the avocado and mash in a bowl to your desired consistency. 3. Fold the cilantro, onion, jalapeno, and tomatoes in gently so as not to crush the tomatoes. 4. Squeeze in the lime juice and season to taste with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. 5. Stir thoroughly but gently. 6. If you find that the guacamole is too acidic, blend in a sprinkle of sugar. 7. Store leftovers with the reserved pit to prevent browning.

ROSEMARY GREYHOUNDS Ingredients: 2oz vodka 5oz rosemary simple syrup 4oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice rosemary sprigs club soda (optional)
1. Mix vodka, rosemary simple syrup, and grapefruit juice. 2. Pour over ice, add a sprig of rosemary for garnish, and serve. 3. Add a splash of club soda for some fizz!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Trim the leaves off the rosemary sprigs, leaving only those at the top for decorative and aromatic purposes. 2. Cut chicken into cubes and combine in a bowl with the vegetables suggested here or those of your choosing. 3. Marinade for at least an hour in a ready-made Italian salad dressing or one you prefer, then skewer your ingredients on the rosemary sprig and grill. Makes a great appetizer, too!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Cube the watermelon and toss it in a bowl with the juice and zest of 2 limes. You can allow this to marinate for several hours or for as long as it takes you to assemble everything else. In another bowl toss the arugula with the feta and mint. 2. In a mason jar, combine the juice of the other 2 limes, their zest, vinegar, olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. 3. Right before serving top the greens with the watermelon, then add the dressing. Toss well and serve immediately.

Ingredients - Lemon Vinaigrette dressing: 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon dijon mustard 2 teaspoons maple syrup 1 lemon, juiced 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil Ingredients - Salad: 2-4 pieces of salmon, skin on preferably 1 bag of spring mix salad 4 radishes, sliced 2 small cucumbers, sliced 3 tablespoons rinsed and drained chickpeas

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place a cast iron skillet, large enough for your salmon, on the middle rack of the oven. Turn oven to 500 degrees. 2. Next, make your dressing. It’ll keep for several days when refrigerated and goes nicely over rice, too. 3. When Oven Reaches 500 Degrees: Remove cast iron skillet and turn off the oven. 4. Gently rub both sides of the salmon with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Put the skillet on your stovetop at medium high heat and place the fish flesh side down. 6. Cook

for 3-4 minutes depending on thickness. Don’t move it, just let it cook. 7. After 3-4 minutes, flip the salmon and turn the heat to medium
low. You want the skin to get nice and crispy and for the salmon to cook. It’ll take anywhere between 9 to 12 minutes and technically
should be 125 degrees for medium rare. 8. Test for doneness with a fork. If the pieces come apart easily, it’s done. ❖

s the story goes, way back in a little town in Scotland, two teenagers met, dated, and ultimately married. Their hearts desired to travel the world so they embarked on a trip to the United States, arriving first in New Orleans, then Roanoke, eventually settling in our little town of Haymarket three children later. The Maclean family consists of Karen, Graham, and their three girls, Chloe, Emma, and Mia. Karen, whose personality exudes kindness and openness, and Graham, whose twinkly blue eyes and friendly demeanor make him immediately approachable, have set up shop at Dunbri’s Dessert Cafe, bringing a little bit of Scotland with them. While they both desired to one day own a business, neither one of them knew what that would look like when it happened. But then the space where a former yogurt shop existed became available for sale in the Trading Square shopping center and the pair seized the opportunity. Both Karen and Graham wanted this business to fill a gap in Haymarket. They also wanted something that used their individual skill sets but that would also be totally different for both of them. Karen is a physical therapist by day and Graham a soccer coach. Building

on the already existing fro-yo (short for frozen yogurt) setup, they transformed the space into a comfortable, relaxing environment people would enjoy. Karen says she and their three daughters really enjoyed working together to design the cafe’s industrial/antique/rustic atmosphere. In Scotland, people go out for coffee and cake, says Karen. It’s an event; a time where people meet to chat, hang out, and lounge. And that’s what they wanted Dunbri’s to be for our community. The bonus is that there is something for everyone: ice cream, cakes, donuts, coffee, tea, and even soups and sandwiches. Once the vision was decided, then came the decision about naming it. Graham spent his childhood in Dunblane, while Karen’s was in Bridge of Allan. By taking the first three letters of each of these town names, they created Dunbri’s -- a reflection of both their backgrounds and influences on the business. While the menu and the design of the space will always evolve to keep it fresh, the feel will stay the same, and visitors will have the opportunity to experience even more Scottish items, like jams and other touches, from the family’s travels. One such item, the Pure Barry, is a dessert the family experienced while on holiday in London. Picture this: vanilla soft serve ice cream in a waffle cone, surrounded by a fluffy colorful circle of cotton candy. Named after a Scottish slang term, “pure

W
hen it comes to personal style, nothing is more individual than one’s hair. Who doesn’t love the feeling you get when you’re thrilled with your new haircut (even if it’s followed by a moment of panic when you wonder if you can replicate it tomorrow). Of course it can take time to find a salon where you feel comfortable, and a stylist who understands your style and ability (or not) to do your hair at home. Sometimes it’s an exercise in trial and error. And while we tend to see more hair magazines and commercials directed at women, men are just as particular when it comes to their ‘do. (And these days, even their quaffed beards. But more on that later!) Haymarket lucked out when Tyrone and Candie Davis opened the town’s newest shop, Mane Masters Barbershop and Blowout Studio on Costello Way. If a barbershop and a high-end salon had a stylish baby, it would look just like Mane Masters. The décor is that of a chic, yet comfortable living room and the waiting area tempts clients with cookies, a coffee bar, bottled water, and a chess board begging to be played. And let’s not forget the sincerely warm greeting you get as you walk through the door – it’s like you’re family.

The concept came from their time working together in a barbershop where they learned the nuances of that particular business. Barbershops are more than just a place to get a haircut. They are also a cultural experience; historically maledominated places where men hang out and get to know everyone – barbers and clients alike. And while Candie had a chair in the barbershop, she knew that some of her female clients didn’t feel as comfortable as she wanted them to be. Thus the Davises decided to create a place where men, women, and kids could come and have that relaxed, comfortable barbershop experience at an elevated level. The result is a unisex barbershop and salon where everyone feels included. And it’s a family affair. Tyrone and Meeko, their 17-year-old son, currently have the barber chairs, and Candie, along with another stylist, work on the salon side. Overseeing the entire operation is Caesar, the family schnauzer, who greets each customer with glee. Haymarket is no stranger to salons and barbershops, so why did the Davises choose to land here? They loved the feel of Haymarket, and recognized the need for a shop like theirs. There simply isn’t a barbershop or salon that offers the same diverse, yet inclusive services. Did they choose wisely? It certainly looks it. At times they have entire families, mom, dad, teens and kids who book at the same time and hang out while they each have their turn in the chair. “We are so grateful to be part of the Haymarket community. We’ve been warmly welcomed and people in town are always referring customers to us,” Candie said. “The vibe has been superb, very welcoming,” Tyrone added. But back to the beards, the trendy, trendy beards. On the menu at Mane Masters you’ll see a variety of services, including several just for beards. Tyrone, Candie and Meeko are on top of trends in this department, and have many customers who come in just to have their beards shaped and expertly cared for. As for what’s next, Tyrone has been fielding questions from kids interested in becoming barbers, (he’d love to offer apprenticeships down the road), and Candie has been toying with the idea of adding another salon component, maybe a nail technician or a lash specialist, or both. One thing is clear though, with the success they’ve seen in the past six months alone, there’s no doubt Mane Masters will be growing. ❖

Thoroughly clean up the area because pests breed beneath fallen leaves, limbs, and debris; remove any bugs lurking under rocks, boards, or planters. Choose healthy nursery plants and pest-resistant cultivars, avoiding distressed or damaged specimens.
ou look out at your garden with immense satisfaction: your seedlings matured into full-grown plants and everything is thriving. In the spring, you followed all the rules for soil preparation and planting, and now you admire the fruits of your labor. You walk through the garden to enjoy a closer look and revel in its beauty when … wait … why are there holes in those leaves? What’s all the fuzzy stuff on that stem? And what is that hideous thing on the tomato plant? The bugs have arrived. It’s as if one of them posted your place on Facebug or Insectagram and they all showed up, ready to party. Because last winter was so mild, this summer is likely to be prolific, bug-wise. While you may be tempted to deploy the mother-ofall-pesticides to wipe out the buggy flash mob, there are safer measures to rid your garden of pests.
PRACTICE EARLY PREVENTION
If you didn’t do this in the spring, you’ll remember for next year. Start with healthy soil that has been

This requires fortitude, high tolerance for ickyness, and really good gardening gloves. That hideous thing on the tomato plant? It’s the hornworm, which can strip a giant plant down to bare stems. Pluck the squishy thing and drop it into soapy water to drown; ditto for other caterpillars, large beetles, and slugs. Smaller pests like aphids and spider mites can be blasted off plants with a strong spray from the garden hose. You can also gently shake a branch or stem over a sticky board to dislodge pests.

Not all bugs are bad; some are so good they should have their own national holidays. Ladybugs devour aphids, mealybugs, scale and other small, soft-bodied pests and eggs. Lacewings look like emissaries from fairyland, but their larvae consume mass quantities of nasty leafhoppers, thrips, whiteflies, and other pests. Parasitic wasps lay eggs on hosts, which are devoured by the hatching
larvae; if you see rows of tiny white bumps on the back of that hideous hornworm, its days are numbered. And then there’s the heavy artillery -“predatory true bugs” with fabulous names like assassin bug, spined soldier bug, pirate bug, and mealybug destroyer. You can order good bugs online, and should also install pollenor nectar-producing plants to keep them around.
USE A NATURAL, ORGANIC SPRAY
Spraying should be a last resort; it can destroy the beneficial insects and pollinators you want to keep in your garden. Certain pests require certain formulations: Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is a bacterium effective on caterpillars; a solution of neem oil and insecticidal soap works on small bugs like aphids, mites, scale, and gnats, among others. An all-purpose agent can be made by grinding up a garlic bulb and an onion, adding a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and a quart of water, steeping the mixture for an hour, then straining it into a clean spray bottle and adding a tablespoon of liquid dish soap. To be effective, sprays must come in contact with bugs and should be applied late in the day so that the sun doesn’t cook your plants. Together, these practices form a system known as “integrated pest management” or IPM which, depending on your garden, could be a full-time job – after all, there are jillions of the little buggers out there. One helpful resource is the Master Gardener program of the local County Extension office, providing trained volunteers to diagnose plant problems and suggest solutions. Chabad Center dedicates new Torah
According to OpenTable, it’s Carmello’s of Old Town Manassas. The family-owned restaurant recently earned OpenTable’s Diner’s Choice and Tastemaker awards for “most romantic” and “best Italian restaurant” for its food and ambience. Said owner Alice Pires, “We’re grateful for all of our OpenTable diners who nominated us. We know Carmello’s has been a special place for so many throughout its 30-year history.” Established in 1987 and the recipient of Wine Spectator magazine’s Award of Excellence for nine consecutive years, Carmello’s serves contemporary American cuisine with Portuguese and Mediterranean influences. Sounds like the perfect place for a romantic dinner on date night!
Recently the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in greater Gainesville and Manassas celebrated the completion of and dedication ceremony for its new Sefer Torah. The Torah (the five books of Moses hand written on parchment), is the most sacred Jewish article and takes over a year to be written. “It is not every day a community has such an opportunity to welcome a New Torah and the celebration is very special and joyful,” said Rabbi Shmuly Perlstein. Ancient dictums require a certified Torah scribe, and everything from the character of the scribe to the quality of the parchment and type of ink are taken into account, Perlstein said. Also, each of the 304,808 letters and notations must be scripted to perfection. The slightest error voids the entire 54-portion parchment, he said.

The program began with the scribe filling in the last few lines of the Torah, and participants had the opportunity to fill in a letter of the Torah, alongside the scribe during the ceremony. “We celebrated by dancing with, and parading the Torah outside, welcoming it to our community and celebrating the joy of such a special moment,” Perlstein said. The Torah was escorted under a chuppah, or "canopy" by several members of the congregation who placed it in its home in the Ark.

foot facility was made possible through a $50 million gift by Dwight and Martha Schar. “A community the size of Northern Virginia should have its own stand-alone cancer center. We’re proud to be making that happen,” Inova President and CEO J. Stephen Jones said in a news release. The institute plans to use genomic treatment options based on patient DNA and will enable patients the opportunity to receive all care in a single location, from imaging to
medical consultations and prescriptions. Inspired by Inova’s longtime plans to create a cancer research center focused on personalized treatment, Dwight Schar — the founder of Reston-based homebuilding company NVR Inc. — helped Inova acquire the property on the former ExxonMobil corporate campus. The Schars’ gift is the largest single donation Inova has ever received and spurred a campaign to recruit leading physicians and scientists to the center.
