Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?

greet How does your business serve the local community? I am very active on the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. I enjoy interacting with the various schools in Prince William County and in the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. I often assist the Chamber in signing up other business leaders in the area for various education events such as National Young Readers Day and the annual area high school Speed Networking event. I also am one of the annual judges for the three $2,500 scholarships awarded by the Chamber to graduating high school seniors.
Steve Kubin Primerica Financial Services 8700 Centreville Road, Suite 8696 Manassas, Virginia 703-330-4533 primerica.com/kubin When and why did you decide to join this company/firm? OR when and why did you decide to start your own company? I owned a Travel Network travel agency in Manassas from 1985 until 1988. After I sold my travel agency, I was approached by someone who worked for Primerica. He explained the company to me and it was exactly what I was looking for. With my travel business I was able to assist people with planning their dream vacations. With my financial services business I am able to assist individuals and families plan for their dream retirement and other financial goals.
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. My greatest satisfaction is being thanked by clients who have reached their financial goals that I helped them set up in the past. I have recently obtained my first three generations of clients within the same family.
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? I enjoy being a member of the HGBA. I have made several friends through the HGBA as well well as obtained several clients, both directly and indirectly through referrals. Their monthly meetings and breakfasts are always a lot of fun to attend.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? My three business tips are: 1. Always follow through and follow up with your clients. 2. Be passionate about what you do. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals.
I am originally from Queens in New York City, New York and my wife is from Lodi, New Jersey. We relocated to Northern Virginia in 1980 with my job at the time. We then purchased a house in Manassas and have lived here ever since. At the time we liked that it was strategically located. It was close enough to Washington D.C. and the surrounding area, but we also liked what Prince William County and Manassas offered. We have always loved Old Town Manassas as well as Occoquan and Haymarket.
What is your favorite season in this area, and why? My favorite season is the spring. That is when I am able to start gardening and enjoying the outdoors every year.
What are some hobbies you enjoy? I enjoy vegetable gardening and especially trying to grow different vegetables each year. I enjoy swimming and snorkeling and I try to do each of those as often as possible. My wife, Denise, and I both love to travel and we have been to many destinations both within and outside the USA. We also love classic rock music and we enjoy going to rock concerts.
What is your favorite restaurant? We have been going to Carmello’s Restaurant in Manassas ever since it first opened over thirty years ago. We enjoy going there for special events and we like the fact that they are always updating their menu.
What is your favorite local high school sports team? I support the Osbourn Eagles.
Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? My wife, Denise, and I sponsor a child in Haiti through World Vision. We have been to Haiti twice in the past during cruise vacations and have seen the poverty in that island nation. We enjoy corresponding with our sponsored child and in providing special assistance for his community.
What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? As I have previously mentioned, I owned a travel agency for three and a half years and enjoyed helping people plan their vacations. I especially enjoyed helping engaged couples plan their honeymoons. ❖

Caitlin Nguyen How one Battlefield student’s service is shaping the community BY JULIETA DENTONE

ike many Haymarket teenagers, Caitlin Nguyen is a driven, committed student at Battlefield High School. What separates her from the other 3,000 students, though, is her passion for volunteering and helping others. As the vice president of Key Club, many people look up to her for her kindness and compassion towards others, and how she is able to balance everything she does. In addition to having a major role in Key Club, she is part of Big Brothers and Sisters, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society, where she is the secretary. Caitlin is always ready to help others. She focuses most of her time on volunteering, and it shows, as she talks about it eagerly and with so much emotion. “What’s so important about volunteering is that it builds character,

not only leadership. You don’t have to hold a title to be a leader, you are a leader in your own way.” Caitlin motivates others to get involved and loves when people join Key Club and other services for volunteering. She adds that all of the members coming together is one of her favorite things about helping out in the community, as “we’re all working together to make a positive impact with this amazing organization.” Pam Barrett, who is the secretary and sophomore representative of Key Club, is one of the many students who look up to Caitlin and love her passion for community service. “Caitlin is such a wonderful person,” Barrett states. “She has such a kind heart and she implements leadership in everything she does.” This year Caitlin was project lead for a very important service, Wreaths across

America. Since she was the lead, she wanted to make it more engaging for the community, and to raise awareness and funds. To do that, Caitlin put her own little spin on it. She and her sister took 12 hours to bake hundreds of cookies and decorated them to look like wreaths, and handed them out to passers-by to encourage them to to donate a wreath to a fallen soldier. She then came back on wreath laying day with more cookies and gave them out to the volunteers. Caitlin puts all of her energy to make the most out of the projects and services. Caitlin has a real passion for volunteering, and she has been doing it since she was 10. Since she started at a young age, she wants to encourage other kids to do the same. Every Monday, Caitlin visits her old school, Tyler Elementary. When she gets there, she helps run an after school STEM program that they offer for kids from kindergarten up to fifth grade. Caitlin is the lead mentor for the robotics aspect of the program, and she loves to see the kids start STEM young. Going to Tyler Elementary School really makes her happy, as both she and the kids are doing something they love. Mrs. Bereczki, who advises Key Club, talks about how great Caitlin is with her work: “She bleeds volunteerism.” She adds, “she is one of the most humble humans I have ever met.” Caitlin is always volunteering, and so far she has 92 hours of community service, and those are just the hours that have been documented. As Mrs. Bereczki puts it, “she goes above and beyond, and even beyond that.” As she continues into her senior year and into college, Caitlin hopes to continue to volunteer and inspire people to do what they truly love. Regardless of where she ends up, Caitlin will be a great asset to whatever community she joins. ❖

10 most common pregnancy myths
MYTH No hot baths. FACT “It’s fine to take baths as long as the water isn’t too hot,” Lavery said. “Avoid saunas and whirlpool spas which can raise your body temperature over 102 degrees. A temperature that high could become dangerous for both you and your baby.”
Breaking down the do’s and don’ts when you’re expecting hen it comes to pregnancy, everything from web articles and books to relatives and strangers have advice for mom on the do’s and don’ts. Some of the advice may be pretty sound, but some of it is complete nonsense. With all the pregnancy “advice” out there, it’s hard to know what – or whom – to believe. Dr. Elizabeth Lavery of Novant Health UVA Health System Lake Manassas OB/GYN in Manassas, Virginia, gives us her take on ten of the most popular pregnancy myths.
MYTH Skip the coffee. FACT “One 12-ounce cup of coffee a day is perfectly fine,” Lavery said. “Caffeine in moderation has never been shown to be dangerous in pregnancy. Just don’t drink the whole pot!”
MYTH You can’t color your
hair while you’re pregnant.
FACT “Hair dyes and perms and things like that are completely fine, though we usually tell people to wait until after the first trimester,” Lavery said.
12
{ MARCH 2018 |
MYTH Don’t lift your
hands over your head.
FACT “A popular wives’ tale says that if a woman lifts her arms above her head while pregnant, the cord could get wrapped around the baby’s neck,” Lavery said. “You won’t do any harm to your baby by lifting your arms.”
“The skin absorption of chemicals in hair dye is minimal, but make sure the space is well ventilated so you aren’t breathing in the fumes.”
MYTH Manicures are out. FACT “Manicures and pedicures are no problem during pregnancy,” Lavery said. “In any case, make sure you’re in a well ventilated space to avoid breathing in fumes.”
MYTH It’s okay to
have a drink.
FACT “No amount of alcohol use is safe during pregnancy,” Lavery said. “The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends no alcohol during pregnancy.”
GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
MYTH You can’t fly during your
first or third trimester.
FACT “This is simply not true,” Lavery said. “If you have a low-risk, healthy pregnancy, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to fly before 36 weeks. However, always discuss your travel plans with your doctor before booking a flight.”
MYTH Say no to fish. FACT “Fish that have low levels of mercury, such as tilapia and salmon, are actually good for women during pregnancy,” Lavery said. “Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for both mother and baby.” Lavery suggests skipping raw sushi and avoiding fish like mackerel, shark, tilefish, and swordfish, all of which are high in mercury.
MYTH I’m eating for two! FACT “On average, pregnant women only need about 300 extra calories a day,” Lavery said. “Eat to your hunger, but follow your normal habits with maybe a little more snacking to get those extra calories in. Talk with your doctor if you feel you have a diminished or supercharged appetite.”
MYTH You cannot exercise
during pregnancy.
FACT “Regular exercise has many benefits in pregnancy, including decreasing the chances of developing gestational diabetes or delivering by cesarean section,” Lavery said. “There are some pregnancy complications where exercise is not recommended, and even healthy women may need to make some modifications so be sure to discuss your plans with your doctor.” ❖

Tomlinson, who is unveiling a new group travel offering to the community, views travel as a spiritual experience. It is her personal passion, and it has grown into a business that is more about love of travel and service to the community than profit. “I am at a place in my

life now where I am able to do what I want to do, what I feel I’m meant to do, follow my dreams, which is to share this tour operator service with the community.” “The whole sense of traveling, being away from your day to day life… you’re more alive, more receptive to everything, more open to wonder ‘what is my divine purpose, why am I here?’ I believe I really feel that when we pause and take in the world around us we are much more receptive to be inspired and to inspire others…to figure out how we fit into our world.” Tomlinson has a lifetime of travel under her belt. Born and raised in Long Beach, California, her parents would regularly embark with the family on cross-country trips to visit relatives. Since then, Tomlinson has traveled to every state in the U.S. Continuing to travel into adulthood with two close friends, the trio was nicknamed “Charlie’s Angels” at a resort in the Bahamas, and the name has stuck. various meticulously-planned trips all over the world show the three friends in the Charlie’s Angel pose. Tomlinson was first exposed to the motor coach tour concept of travel when she traveled on a Cavalier tour to New York City with her mother in law in 1999. This was her first experience traveling in a group as a community. “I loved it,” she said, “and I thought, ‘we need that here in Northern Virginia, but we don’t have it.’” Tomlinson realized that her skills gained in the workplace in years of professional services and project management in government contracting positioned her perfectly for travel planning. The complexity of the trips Tomlinson plans is daunting. They are huge projects, involving 80 hours or more of behindthe-desk planning and countless hours of travel in preparation. Therein lies the value of Tomlinson’s service. With the internet and all the travel sites, anyone can plan a vacation. But the time and

background knowledge it takes for that kind of extensive research is frequently prohibitive, especially for those less web-savvy. Tomlinson’s connections through industry knowledge and membership in professional travel organizations serve her well in planning the trips and obtaining value for her guests, which she calls a labor of love. “As a group, we have access to a whole lot more amenities than you would as an individual,” she said. With these organizations behind her, she can negotiate lower costs, upgrades, and luxury amenities with hotels, restaurants, and airlines that are only available to members. She is proud to be a member of the National Association of Career Travel Agents (NACTA) and both the Signature Travel and Travel Leaders Networks® consortiums, as well as an affiliate of Nexion Travel, a host travel agency. If you’ve planned a vacation, you know there’s a lot of time and detail that goes into the planning. There’s a lot of work involved in making reservations for hotels and transportation and arranging transfers. The second part is then you have to worry about everything… making connections, keeping track of your bags, and when you get to your destination you are not familiar with the area, you don’t know your way around… you end up wasting time looking at maps and figuring out where to go instead of enjoying a mint julep or appreciating the beautiful fountains and architecture. With Spirited Travel, you don’t have to think at all. You just show up.” What Tomlinson is offering is completely stress-free, luxury travel. Imagine a vacation in which every aspect is taken care of, every detail addressed. After parking your car right here in Haymarket, you are whisked away with your group on a comfort coach to your destination… all your transportation has been arranged, reservations have been made, transfers scheduled, there is nothing to worry about. Your bags are taken care of and will be delivered to you upon reaching your destination. You are accompanied by a tour

director — Tomlinson herself (and sometimes her husband) accompanies every group — who has meticulously designed this vacation for her guests to experience the very best the destination area has to offer. Your vacation is insured, and every cost, all the way down to taxes, gratuities, and most meals, is included to make the stressful details of travel nonexistent. “This is red carpet all the way,” she added. The groups stay in luxury hotels and travel in deluxe motorcoaches with reclining seats, flat screens, and wifi. There is no opportunity for disappointment in Tomlinson’s tours. Every single experience her guests will enjoy on their trip has been personally evaluated by Tomlinson herself, all the way down to the pretzels from the street vendors in Lancaster, PA. She has stayed in every hotel, eaten in every restaurant, ridden on the coach, flown with the airlines, and toured all the destinations that she plans for her guests. Nothing is left unchartered. Tomlinson says, “You are getting the value and cost savings of a group rate, with additional amenities, upgrades and benefits. But more than cost savings, it’s about value. If you want a real experience which has been handpicked by someone who has been there and done it, then you come to me.” Spirited Travel’s 2018 itinerary starts off with “Lancaster Sights and Sounds,” featuring a production of JESUS, departing on May 4. This inaugural vacation is followed by other offerings every month such as “Patriot’s Holiday” to Gettysburg and Philadelphia in July; “Crabs and Maritime” to Annapolis and St. Michaels in August; “Tastes and Lyrics” to Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans in September; “Southern Grace” to Wilmington, Savannah, and Charleston in October; and “Christmas Markets” to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in November, in time for Christmas shopping. “Can you hear me now?
“
...what you’re really saying to your dog
BY ANDREW HORAN
they trust us when we tell them that a situation is not worthy of fear or stress. When a dog is overly stressed, or in a highly agitated state, people often try to soothe them using human psychology. If a young child falls and scrapes their knee, a parent’s immediate instinct is to pick them up, rock them, and calmly express to them that everything will be alright. This works because the child is wired to understand that when mom or dad are present and comforting them, everything is in fact going to be ok. They understand what the words mean, and know that they’re no longer in danger, but dogs don’t have that same level of comprehension. For example, an insecure dog that is scared of strangers will cower behind you when someone unfamiliar approaches. If you respond by using your high-pitched happy voice in an attempt to reassure your dog that “he is a nice guy,” or “it’s ok,” what is your tone really communicating? It’s telling
W
e know a dog’s hearing is much better than ours, but are they really hearing what we think they are? Many dog owners — and trainers, for that matter — think that using soft, soothing tones will help a dog better understand us. Actually, it doesn’t. Dogs understand words. Basic commands like sit, down, stay, etc. all have meaning if the dog has been conditioned to understand what behavior is expected when they hear them. More than likely, however, the dog was never taught that the words “it’s ok” have a specific behavior attached to them. When we say those words to our dogs, we want them to understand that they should be calm and unstressed. To do this, we must be an authority figure to our dogs, so

them that the way they are feeling and behaving in that moment is acceptable, because it’s the same voice and tone we use when rewarding our dogs. They don’t understand your words, but they interpret your tone. If we use the same style of communication when trying to stop behaviors that we do to reinforce them, we inadvertently reinforce negative behaviors or validate their feelings of fear or stress. You can be the calming voice to your dog by keeping your tone even, and not overreacting when your dog is overly stressed or attempting to aggress towards a stimulus. There is a reason that the clicker is a very effective training tool, that’s because the click always sounds the same. Through repetition that sound will come to mean something. Your voice and tone should be used in the same manner. Keep the words you use, and the manner in which you say them as consistent as possible.

“Dogs want, and need, clarity about rules, structure, and knowing where they stand within the family.” RELATIONSHIP AND RESPECT
In order to control a potentially volatile situation when your dog is in a stressed state, and have him listen and trust your calming words and tone, you first need to have his respect above all else. If your dog views you as a roommate, and not an authority figure, then it may not matter what you say or how you say it. Dogs want, and need, clarity about rules, structure, and knowing where they stand within the family. If they have an inflated sense of their status, they will not listen as well. The dog is still part of the family, and we love them, but their place is at the bottom of the family hierarchy. Here are a few tell tale signs that your dog has a false sense of status. • They claim space: for instance, they get on furniture and resist when told to get off it. • They try to control walks and pull you where they want to go. • They are possessive of food/toys/ beds. • They are possessive of people. (It may seem like they just really like the person and want to be around them, but being possessive is something different). • They try to control situations or people by barking, growling, or nipping. • They are insistent when they want attention and petting. If you see any of these traits in your dog, it’s time for a plan to train them and instill new behaviors. Such a plan requires implementing new rules for everything from how feedings are

done to how we prepare to go for a walk. You will get some push back from your dog when you start your new regimen, but this clarity about what you expect will actually reduce your dog’s anxiety in the long run. It’s not one big thing that makes the difference, it’s the 10 little things we change that paint a clear picture of how the relationship is supposed to be. Start with adopting a ‘nothing in life is free’ policy by making your dog work for every reward. “Work” can be a sit, down, stay, or any trick you have taught them. As long as they have to execute something in order to get what they want, it will start to become clear that you’re in charge, which is what your dog prefers anyway. DON’T USE TEN WORDS WHEN ONE WILL DO
In addition to using a confusing tone of voice, dog owners also sometimes talk too much. We have all seen that person attempting to get their dog to sit. “Sit Pepper.... sit....sit....sssiiiiit.....Pepper SIT..... SIT PEPPER....SIT (dog finally sits), what a good boy!!!!!” When giving a command, the dog should be conditioned to execute that command the first time it is given, regardless of any distractions in the area. A dog like Pepper has been conditioned to sit when he feels like it — there is no sense of urgency to do as the owner commands. If you find yourself in a risky situation, you need to be able to redirect your dog in 3 words or less. Screaming “NO” and yanking on
GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
the leash will only exacerbate the situation. You should be able to draw your dog’s attention from a stimulus, redirect it to you, and then be able to give them an alternative. When I work with reactive dogs, we do not go out into the real world until I know we have developed a good rapport, and a “sit-stay” (when the dog will sit by my side until released) that will hold up in a high stress situation. When we come across a potentially high-stress situation, I know the dog will look to me for guidance. When I calmly and evenly give the command to ‘sit,’ the dog knows that I have the situation under control, and it is in their best interest to follow my direction. At that point, it is up to me to ensure that I do not allow the stressor to go any further, either by defusing the situation or moving the dog to a safe distance from the stimulus. LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Your dog should look to you for guidance on how to respond to a variety of scenarios. Speaking in an even tone when in a high stress situations demonstrates that you are not panicked or stressed by the scenario, thus sending the message that your dog should not be either. The majority of dogs are born followers. However, if they sense weakness, insecurity, or are in a home with inconsistent structure, they may try to take control. Dogs like knowing what to expect — it makes them feel secure. Having the situation under control is communicated not only by what you say, but how you say it. ❖

A Man on a Mission Shawn Daley and his bulldog are devoted to veterans and community STORY BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
S
hawn Daley is a recently retired Marine Corps Major who is devoted to veterans and inspiring “everyday” people to get the most out of life and opportunities. He and his bulldog Gunny visit retirement homes to honor, inspire, and show respect to retired veterans, their spouses, and the other residents. An energetic man who exudes positive vibes, he has started spreading his exuberance through motivational speaking. Maj. (ret) Daley humbly says, “I’m nobody special, just a man on a mission to honor the sacrifice of our veterans, to respect democracy and never forget the cost of that democracy and freedom. My intent is to honor and assist veterans and anyone else who is willing to listen. I enjoy giving back to my community, making people smile, and I do this in ways I feel like I can make the biggest impact. Motivational speaking, advocating for veterans, and living in the “right now” moment is how I do it.” We sat down with Shawn and Gunny and asked them to tell us about what they do and why they do it. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF.
I define myself as a father first, of my two sons Shawn Jr. and Aiden. I’ve served 28 years in the Marine Corps and recently retired. I’m a golf and mountain bike enthusiast and the proud owner of Gunny. I currently live in Haymarket and am engaged to be married to my high school sweetheart, Kathy Gibbons.

BEING A MARINE…THAT’S WHERE YOU INTEREST IN THE VETERANS CAME FROM?
Absolutely. The Marines are not a branch of the military, we’re a breed. So the Marine Corps has been a lifestyle for me, not a living or a job. My family. In making sure I respect that family, I try each and every day to live by the words “honor, courage and commitment” which are the core values of the Marine Corps. I also believe that this is a great example to be set for my children. None of us are perfect, but if I can provide a positive example of character and behavior for my boys, then I have succeeded. TELL ME ABOUT GUNNY.
He’s an Old English Bulldog; I got him from a breeder in Pennsylvania, and he’ll be four in April. He weighs about 60 pounds. He

just loves people, and he’s a great family dog. People just can’t keep from petting him… he just lights people’s faces up. He just lets people rub all over him and pet him. One of my buddies has a 3 year old daughter, and she comes over and they just play and have fun, she just pulls at him and he just takes it and nudges her. They have so much fun. They are very gentle, loving dogs. IS GUNNY A CERTIFIED THERAPY DOG?
No, he’s not certified in anything but being a great dog! HOW DID HE GET HIS NAME?
When we got him as a puppy, we considered three names for him: Leatherneck, Jarhead, or Gunny. These are all references to the Marine Corps. Our family voted, and “Gunny” it was.
WHY THE NICKNAMES FROM THE MARINE CORPS?
The Old English Bulldog is the breed most associated with the United States Marine Corps, which unofficially adopted the breed as its mascot in 1922. The tough, muscular, fearlessness of the breed has come to epitomize the fighting spirit and tenacity of a U.S. Marine. HOW DID YOU START WITH VISITING RETIREMENT HOMES?
I started about five years ago, just visiting and speaking with veterans on Veterans Day. I just wanted to volunteer my time. So every
I’m nobody special, just a man on a mission to honor the sacrifice of our veterans, to respect democracy and never forget the cost of that democracy and freedom. Veterans Day I’d get in my uniform and I’d go and then that turned into bringing Gunny, and then it grew into a family affair. Kathy and Aiden joined Gunny and I on our last few visits. Our visits turn into a mixture of both inspiration and encouragement, which always include emotional and heartfelt moments. WHEN DO YOU USUALLY VISIT VETERANS?
Memorial Day weekend and Veterans Day. Every place [retirement home] we visit is unique. Some of them, we show up to packed crowds and they’ll have flags, a cake, and a party. Some visits are visiting individual rooms, and spending time with veterans, spouses, and residents. Our visits have grown more frequent, and we go on holidays on some other weekends too. WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL PURPOSE IN VISITING RETIREMENT HOMES?
A lot of this has to do with thanking the vets, and acknowledging their sacrifice. Being a veteran myself, I was interested in anything to do with veterans, so it started that way. But now, even if they’re not veterans, it doesn’t matter to me any more. I realized that we are
making an impact on everyone. When I see their faces light up because you spend time with them, that kind of gift is so rewarding. I will tell you that spending that 10 minutes… it's not inventive, scientific, or going to change the world, but it is changing the world for someone in that moment and making life a little easier for someone. And isn’t that what we should all strive for? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TAKE AIDEN WITH YOU ON YOUR VISITS?
It’s been so good for him. I’m really proud of the way he’s taken to it. As I watch him to do it more, I observe that he feels more comfortable each time we visit and interact with the elderly. It just gives me such a sense of fulfillment. My son has really taken the rein with that… he’s kind of on his own… he used
to be right by my side, but now I’ll look around and he’ll be two or three people over, just having his own little conversation and it just warms my heart to see that. HOW DO YOU TAILOR YOUR SPEAKING TO THE OLDER GENERATION, THE VETERANS?
I invoke feelings about what it is to be a veteran, what it is to live in America today. How hard it has been in the past… like after Vietnam when vets would get off the plane and get spit on, you know. Luckily, today’s Marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen, they have the support of the American people behind them. So I just talk about the state of our country, I discuss current events if they want, like where the military is now, the Department of Defense budget, what the challenges of the Marines are today. And then I just listen. A long time ago

WHAT IS THERE IN THE FUTURE?
We have had such a warm reception and enjoyment doing this so we are looking forward to more opportunities to lend a hand in whatever fashion we can. Giving back to the local community is very important. What about a conversation with neighbors about our community? Those are the conversations where neighbors becomes friends, and friends become family, and family helps family. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING. HOW DID IT START?
I have been motivational speaking for about two years. It actually started just on my personal Facebook page. One day I put a video out there, about 30-45 seconds of just talking about what I think is important, next thing you knew it had like 2,000 views. Then I did another one and that had 9,000 views. People were sharing and responding and commenting. It was inspiring. And so it just kind of took off from there. My videos, in total, now have reached about 25,000 people.
my daddy told me, “God gave us two ears and only one mouth, and that was for a reason.” So a lot of times I do a lot of listening. Some of the elderly, they really love to talk, and that’s ok. I feel like I don’t have to say anything, I feel like they’re inspired, the minute you just look into their eyes and pay attention to them and really actively listen. HOW DOES GUNNY HELP WITH THAT?
He genuinely and enthusiastically interacts with them. Gunny makes an impact both emotionally and psychologically; just his enjoyment of the moment brings a sense of calmness to those we visit. When you add Gunny to the mix it’s obvious that his ability to bring a sense of peace and happiness to those who need it is irreplaceable. THERE’S NO CREATURE THAT IS BETTER AT LISTENING THAN A DOG, IS THERE?
No there is not. I’m glad you said that because I don't think there's another creature on this earth so pure... all he wants is unconditional love, and all he contributes, he demonstrates it every day. But it’s much more than that, the connection or relationship that is built is as important as any human relationship. A relationship built on trust, unconditional love, admiration, and respect. Gunny can form that bond instantly with strangers, almost like a sixth sense. Another amazing thing about dogs is they live in the moment. He doesn’t worry about yesterday or tomorrow or dinner tonight. He is living in the moment, even right here during this interview. We could all learn from that. I try everyday to remind myself to live in the moment. Gunny is always there to remind me. IS THIS PERSONALLY FULFILLING ALSO?
Absolutely. It’s just amazing when you sit and you spend a little time with them [the residents]… When Gunny, Aiden, Kathy, and
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FIRST SPEECHES TO AN AUDIENCE.
Above: Shawn with his son Aiden, fiancé Kathy, and Gunny.
I visit the rooms, you just see their faces light up, and it just feels so good. I make so many personal connections. There was this elderly lady whose husband died in the Korean War, I really felt a connection with her; she was just the sweetest lady. Another memory I have was meeting a 94-year-old gentleman who was at D-Day, that was pretty exciting. It lifts my spirits when I go there, and God willing I’m lifting theirs too. SO THEY PROBABLY HAVE SOME PRETTY GOOD STORIES?
Oh, amazing, incredible stories. Meeting someone who was at D-Day, I mean, how incredible is that? A few years ago I met a gentlemen who was the oldest African American World War II Veteran at 101 years old. I remember him just telling me stories about Mussolini and Italy, and I was just amazed at realizing all the history he has witnessed… what he has seen in a lifetime… I mean, WWII and Korea, and all the social issues he has seen and endured, it’s remarkable.
For now, It has all been all tied into the veterans. My first one was at a retirement community in Fairfax. And I’ve had a couple invitations to speak at military retirement ceremonies which is really an honor, to speak at a Marine’s retirement ceremony. AND WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO FROM HERE?
Kathy and I are opening a small business founded on our own core values of character, leadership, team building, love, and hope. We like to encourage everyone to focus on what’s important. I can do individual life coaching, and I’d like to work with sports teams too. I’d do a healthy mental and physical boot camp for them, with work on leadership roles and team building exercises. Currently my immediate goal is to focus on my local community, and go from there. WHAT ARE 3 THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO IMPART TO PEOPLE WHEN YOU SPEAK?
• The problems you are having today are not going to be the same problems you’ll have a year from now. • Failures really define us: its ok to fail but it's not ok to quit. • It’s all about your relationships with other people, not material things but real relationships. ❖

Questioning our Generosity… Good for our soul, good for humanity BY ROBERT MOON
generosity can be practiced at any level of wealth and at any time if we are willing to ask ourselves some key questions. Why would we want to be generous? Generosity has many origins. A feeling of gratitude. Paying off a sense of debt. Wanting to make a difference. Religious convictions. A feeling of guilt. An obligation to society. Continuing a family legacy. Wanting to be liked or recognized. If we want to be generous and we claim that desire, many of the obstacles to generosity are easily surmounted. If, on the other hand, we are resistant to being generous, every challenge will be considered another reason or excuse not to be generous. Assuming that we have some inclination to be generous, the “why” must be considered. Knowing and owning our motivation will help us to understand what we are expecting our generosity to accomplish.
H
ave you ever imagined what you would do if you won the lottery? Whenever the lottery is in the news, I drift into fantasies of taking care of my future then giving away much of my winnings, should I be so lucky. We often seem to think that only special events like winning the lottery or receiving a windfall are the occasion for generosity. I propose that

How generous can we be and when? Business management is the art of maximizing the use of limited resources. Generosity management is the art of directing abundance in the context of many factors. It is nonsense to give away everything only to become so needy that we in turn must depend on the generosity of others to survive. Good

budgeting and financial planning can help us determine how much we can afford to give now and what we might want to give as a bequest of our estate. If we know we have a certain amount that we will never use, that is the starting place to know how generous we can be. We can also determine what adjustments in lifestyle will allow us to be more generous. The key is to have a framework for both discipline and continuity so that our generosity does not lapse or become haphazard. Where do we wish to express generosity? Our generosity typically resides amid three circles. The first circle includes those closest to us, a family member or friend. The next circle outward is our community, such as our church or a local charity. The third circle lies beyond our immediate contact, such as an institution like our alma mater, or a global concern like the environment or world health. Another approach to determine where we direct our generosity has to do with what we want to accomplish. This is also divided into three categories. Our generosity could address an immediate need such as a serious illness or a catastrophic disaster like a fire. The idea here is a onetime infusion of support to relieve immediate suffering. However, rehabilitation might be more attractive, such as helping someone return to full employment or overcome long term disability through education or training. A third purpose of our generosity might

be prevention, i.e., giving toward the future. Examples would include conservation of land, inoculations for diseases, or medical research. How do we structure our generosity? After we have confirmed that we wish to be generous, how generous we can be, and then where we are most inclined to direct our generosity, our next step is planning the best strategy to make our resources as impactful as possible. This phase considers tax benefits, estate planning, perhaps the use of instruments such as insurance policies, or the direct donation of assets such as stocks or property. A financial planner and estate planning attorney can help us construct the methods most applicable to our desires or situation. Why not now? This final question addresses the actual implementation, putting our desire to be generous into action. Generosity is often imagined as a dream of what we would do “if only.” Moving through these questions will bring our generosity into the present and allow us to act now. ❖

ugust 10, 2012. Everyone who lived in the Gainesville area before that date remembers the illuminated blue cross of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church on Route 29 in Gainesville. It served as a beacon to some, a waypoint to travelers, an orientation point for local pilots, and a beloved symbol of the church to its parishioners and the general community. Early that morning, an arsonist severely damaged the church building, rendering it uninhabitable. Janet Robinson, church treasurer and vice chair of the trustee ministry, says, “The cross remained illuminated until almost the very end, [when the firefighters gained control of the fire]. When the cross went out, I knew it was bad.” But the church community didn’t miss a beat. In their grief, they found another location to worship and continued with their ministries. “Nothing has decreased or changed over the years. In fact I would say that afterward we are still full steam ahead, we have all of our ministries still functioning, community programs, fundraising events, scholarships… everything… all the prior functions that the church participated in before the fire, we have continued to do that. We are feeding the homeless, having back to school drives,” says Pastor George Carlisle, who has led the church for almost eight years. “I think that’s because the church community, the people that come to Mt. Pleasant, they’re resilient, they really understand that being a believer, being a christian, is service, sacrifice. And we teach according to the scripture that if anyone wants to be like Christ… you will experience persecution, you will experience hardship, difficulty,” says Pastor Carlisle. The church is deeply ingrained in the local non-secular community also. After the fire, Pastor Carlisle was instrumental in starting a local “town hall” involving

interfaith and non-secular parts of the community coming together to increase communication and better understanding among all people. Of the trustees, Pastor Carlisle says, “They are a very dedicated and committed group of servants who have demonstrated their determination and passion for the restoration and legacy of the church. They have been serving long before I was installed as Pastor, and they have a passion for the people of the community and for the people of the church, more so than I could have imagined… we just thought we were a little church on the side of the road. But what we’ve learned from the community… the biggest question we get is ‘are you guys coming back?’ And the second question we get is ‘WHEN are you guys coming back?’ This is from everybody [in the area], not just the African American community.” The history of MPBC is deeply rooted and fascinating. According to Henry Peterson, Chairman of Trustees and Deacon, the church community began shortly after the Civil War, when freed African Americans settled in the area of Old Carolina Road and Route 29. The community was called “The Settlement.” With the need for a church foremost in devoted Christians’ minds, a meeting was arranged in the home of Mrs. Sally Grayson, whose descendant, Trustee Yolanda King, still attends MPBC. The result was a small log cabin built on Old Carolina Road as the first church. The log

cabin church was displaced in 1882 when the Highway Department appropriated the land. It was disassembled and reassembled on Lee Highway, the present site of the church, on 3 acres, which was purchased by the church community for $10 from an owner in bankruptcy. It was a great price for the land, but even so it was a huge amount of money to African Americans of the day. “When you think about it, these people probably worked for a nickel a day,” says Robinson. Through the years changes occurred, and the present building was built in 1928. The cemetery behind the church contains one of the oldest graves of an African American that has been buried in a recorded marked location. Since the arson, the church community has never given up on their church home. The building and location they consider hallowed ground. They never considered a new location or a new church building. Robinson says, “I don’t think that God’s plan for Mt. Pleasant.” And Pastor Carlisle adds, “It’s more than a building, it is a place of community, and so many lives have been touched through that building on those grounds.” The legacy of the church building and its location are important. King says, “My family is so deep as far as the lineage of the church and how far it goes back. My great-grandmother was involved in that meeting at her house to start the church. Nowadays it is so important for people to look back at their families… when I can

sit down with some of the church books from the past and I can show my kids how my family was part of the church I can take my kids to the cemetery and show them [their ancestors’ graves], that’s very important to me. I am so dedicated and so grateful that I have a spot to go and show them and tell them, ‘this is where you come from.’” Many of the trustees have attended the church their entire lives and can remember when the church bell would ring to call them to Sunday School, and Route 29 was a two lane road that was safe for children to cross by themselves. So what now? The church community is still as determined today to restore the church building as they were after the fire, and have even planned some improvements. Pastor Carlisle says, “I really feel that it is God’s will for this church to be restored.” But that costs money, and the building was underinsured due to its value at the time of appraisal. So far, through gofundme donations, they have raised $23,000 of the $600,000 needed to complete the restoration. Slowly and surely they are working toward that goal. A large part of the expense of the restoration is bringing the building and property up to current codes, and the number of necessary county permits and fees is daunting and expensive. They have had to connect to the county water and sewer, which is not on Route 29 close to the church, but at the back of the three-acre property. Currently, with the money raised so far,

they have been able to complete this project. When more money is raised, they can start on the interior of the building itself, which had no structural damage but significant water and smoke damage. Peterson, an engineer, has planned the interior of the church and produced the blueprints. They are thankful that their congregation contained someone whose time and talent could help so much in providing significant cost savings to the planned restoration. And the arsonist? He lived and worked in the community, so had knowledge of the church and the building. He was a minor at the time of the crime, and had no criminal record. He pleaded guilty to felony arson, unlawfully entering property of another with the intent to damage, and maliciously destroying or defacing church property. He received and served two-and-a-half years in jail and is paying a court ordered restitution of $250 per month to the church. He was not charged with a hate crime, and whether or not the crime was racially motivated did not come out in the trial. But, the group agrees, to attack a religious house of worship he must have had some hate in his heart towards something MPBC represents. Is there forgiveness? A chorus of “of course” and “absolutely” followed this question. “The first thing I did was render forgiveness, for the gospel of Luke
6:27 says, ‘Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.’ Therefore we forgave him and we prayed for him. We decided that once we left it in the hands of the state prosecutor, whatever decision that was rendered down, we were going to accept that this was God’s will,” says Pastor Carlisle. “There are two parts to this… the church, we are victims, and this created a hardship for our congregation, the congregation had no financial problems prior to this. Not only is it a hardship for the church, I [think about] this young man… he had no record, he ruined his life as a Christian. We have to think about what this young man has done to his life, and what he has to do to repent.” says Robinson. The faith, resilience and hope represented by the congregation is inspiring. In spite of such a debilitating disaster, they think of nothing but the positives in the situation, hope for the future and ways of moving forward and carrying on Christ’s gospel message and teachings. “The holy spirit told me, ‘don’t think of this as a setback, think of this as a way of going forward,’” says Peterson. And Peterson and Pastor Carlisle agree, “A lot of good things have come out of the fire, a lot of coming together in the whole community. We have great hopes for Mt. Pleasant and we believe the best years are still ahead.” ❖

Foster’s Grille: a mainstay in the Haymarket community BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

business have given him the experience to oversee the 12 Foster’s Grille locations that exist in Florida, North Carolina, and Maryland, with the bulk of them in Northern Virginia. What makes him passionate about his job is his desire to pass on learning experiences to the often younger generations of employees who work at these locations. His philosophy is this: “There is no reason you can’t have a fine dining experience at a casual establishment.” He encourages his employees to look customers in the eye and give them the experience of a personal, courteous, and sincere interaction when they are dining at a Foster’s Grille. Keeping in mind that these teens often are gaining their first experience at any place of employment and that it can be challenging, he wants to make sure it is a positive one. “The employees are the lifeblood of our business,” Cerny says. Grille is a locally owned business that continues to be heavily involved and supportive of our community at the school and athletic level, among other avenues. Visitors will often find athletes gathered for team parties, teens grabbing a bite after hockey practice, or families gathered for a quick dinner. The decor that reflects that community support includes murals that adorn the walls painted by local artists. Frequent diners will know why Foster’s Grille is known for their burgers. The Olde Fashioned Charburger includes a half pound of meat — that is eight ounces of delicious, fresh, U.S.A. beef with no preservatives — in one sandwich. But what may surprise some is that Foster’s chicken sandwiches are also one of the most popular items on the menu, along with the wings and chicken fingers. Cerny emphasizes that Foster’s uses only all-natural, white breast
meat from farm-raised chickens. And the wings are jumbo-sized and always fresh, never frozen. Some other options on the sandwich side of Foster’s Grille include a Philly Cheesesteak, Turkey Burger, Oven Roasted Turkey Sandwich, Backyard Garden Burger, and the Foster’s Famous All-Beef Grilled Hot Dog. he concept of Foster’s Grille as a place for those in the Haymarket neighborhood to gather for fresh, casual food began in 1999. And for many of the intervening years — 13 exactly — the Haymarket location has served that purpose for our community. While the restaurant’s core values have remained the same, Mike Cerny, president of Foster’s Grille, is pleased to show off the extensive renovations, including a completely remodeled bar, that have fine-tuned our local “Home of the Charburger” in the recent months with the goal of making guests even more comfortable at this family-friendly spot. salad topped with chicken, and sides of fries or onion rings. Cerny also makes sure that the restaurant changes to accommodate the modern family’s needs; menu items, such as the turkey burger, have been added over time to meet demand. In addition to the famous Charburger, Foster’s specializes in extra thick milkshakes. You know, the kind that you can savor for a while after your meal or take it with you to finish at home. For a change though, make sure to check out the current limited time specials which may include a unique shake flavor that could turn out to be your new favorite. There are new bar offerings also, with the addition of frozen daiquiris coming this spring. Cerny says that he strives to BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
use local vendors as much as possible; they feature local wine by Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery, and about 90 percent of their beer is from local craft breweries. Catering is yet another option at Foster’s Grille. Their Backyard BBQ catering menu offers wings, platters, meatballs, fruit, and entrees like burgers, sausage, bbq ribs, and grilled chicken. Cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, and green salads are some choices for sides, and sheet cakes, cookies, and brownies are available for dessert. Cerny is proud of the high standards and quality customer service that have always existed at the Foster’s Grille locations, and that customer service is carrying over into the digital world. The restaurants are now equipped with technology that allows the customer to view menu options, sports, and other events on digital screens. Customers can now order through the Foster’s Grille app and on their website. Cerny is working to increase social media presence so that families don’t forget about this casual dining experience that may get lost sometimes in the blur of new businesses. There is always a contest giveaway each month on Foster’s Facebook page. Our Haymarket Foster’s Grille was built by a local family and was born and raised exactly where it still exists today. Stop in and see the new ambiance and grab yourself a juicy charburger, chocolate milkshake, or craft beer. You won’t be disappointed. ❖

Know the
BASICS Cyclists should prepare for the riding season by checking equipment BY JARED NIETERS
T
he days are getting longer and warmer, which means riding season is approaching. As you venture outside on your bike, it’s important to keep safety high on the priority list. Making sure your equipment is in proper working order, as well as having the tools and knowledge to maintain the equipment, is essential for a safe and fun experience. Pre-ride safety check. Before each ride, take a minute to examine the wheels, brakes, chain, saddle, pedals, and cockpit. WHEELS. Make sure the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure (imprinted on the sidewall of the tire). Spin the wheel and make sure the tire doesn’t show any cuts, embedded debris, or any other irregularity that could cause you trouble out on the road. At the same time, check and make sure the wheel is properly secured in the frame (with a closed quick release lever or a tightened axle bolt). BRAKES. Give each the front and rear brake lever a squeeze while pushing the bike forward in order to ensure each brake will have stopping power. CHAIN. Chains should be clean, lubed, and free of rust and debris. The the gears and crank should spin freely as well so the chain doesn’t skip while pedaling. SADDLE, PEDALS, & COCKPIT.
Check to to see if the seat post is secure in the frame and the saddle

is secured to the post. The pedals should be threaded all the way in, and spin freely on their spindles. The cockpit consists of the grips, levers, handlebar, and stem – all of which should be snug. CARRY THE ESSENTIALS. In the era of modern technology, a cell phone has become an extremely important piece of equipment; carried in a pocket or bag affixed to the bike. But a phone isn’t the only thing you should carry. Your bag (most commonly secured underneath the seat or located on the handlebar) should have a basic multi-tool, tire levers, replacement inner tube, patch kit, and a tire inflator. A tire inflator can either be a more traditional hand pump, or a CO2 inflator, which

uses a cartridge of compressed air to inflate a tire quickly. A bottle of water in a holder on the bike is also an important piece of safety equipment, and shouldn’t be overlooked. LEARN THE BASICS. Just having the tools isn’t enough to take care of potential roadside issues. Every cyclist should know the basics. The number one problem encountered by recreational cyclists is punctures. While repairing a flat tire the first time can be intimidating, it’s a simple process that takes under an hour to learn. At bare minimum find a short instructional video online if you don’t know how to repair a flat, but nothing can beat a hands-on class offered by local professionals.

Still on the fence about summer camps?
Not only can camps provide a much needed break for parents during the long summer days, but the benefits for children are undeniable. Summer camps often provide experiences kids would never get at home or school. Exposing children to a variety of people, places and activities helps them gain independence and develop life-long skills. Not only that, camps get kids unplugged and physically active... something experts agree is crucial for kids nowadays. So go ahead and get a head start by checking out these great summer camp providers on this page.

Lions, Lambs and other March Madness(es) Choosing wines in the changing spring weather BY MARK LUNA
I
n like a lion, out like a lamb, right? Let’s face it, March just can’t make up its mind. It’s officially winter until the 20th, although the weather experts say that the meteorological spring — whatever that is — actually starts on March 1, which makes no sense to this weather non-expert. It’s cold, then it’s not, then it’s cold again, with wind and rain this time, followed by warming sunshine, bringing big rays of hope, at least for a day. Through all this madness, what wine are you supposed to drink?! Well, for you winter lions out there, this is still a great time to hibernate with some big reds and heavy whites. And for those who are bound and determined to “wine your way” into spring no matter the temperature, there are some great choices for you, too…including rosé! For a weighty white, BELLE PENTE’S 2013 WILLAMETTE VALLEY CHAR-
DONNAY is a gorgeous take on a classic varietal, coming from the
hottest Chardonnay growing region around: Oregon. Consisting of all estate-grown fruit, both fermented and aged in French oak barrels, this wine is rich in color, bold in aromatics, and luscious on the palate with citrus tones, tropical fruit characteristics and a nuttiness reminiscent of an old burgundy blanc. It’s the best sub$25 chardonnay I’ve had in a very long time and goes perfectly with cream sauce dishes, poultry and seafood. On the lighter side, with a spring calling, there’s 2016 GUILHEM ROSÉ from the Languedoc-Roussillon area of southern France. From one of the most presti-
gious wineries west of Provence, Mas de Daumas Gassac, Guilhem is a 50/50 blend of syrah & carignan, with a salmon color that shines. Its fresh berry fruit scents and red currant undertones make this the perfect fit for grilled meats, creative salads, and tart desserts. It lets you know that there are warm days close ahead. For you red wine fans with spring in mind, spice is the name of the game with the 2016 XILOCA GARNACHA, the bottle with the big “X” on it. Pronounced “the-LOca,” this racy red from Calatayud, Spain is 100 percent garnacha, the most widely planted grape in Spain. It has an intense blackberry
color and captivating aromas of ripe red fruits wrapped around an earthy core. The freshness and well integrated tannins invite a second sip, as the intensity continues in a mouth-filling palate and a lingering fruit-
filled finish. And the best part? It’s only $15. And finally, for the heavyweight winter red wine fan, look no further than the 2014 TIKAL PATRIOTA RED from Argentina. Founded by Ernest Catena, a fourth-generation winemaker of Italian descent, Tikal represents all that is perfect about malbec with a healthy complement of “patriotic” old vine Bonarda. This wine made the
Wine Spectator’s list of Top 100 Wines of 2015, and for very good reason. The color is a deep reddish purple, and the aromas of bright berry and cherry fruit explode. It’s big bodied, yet very balanced with luscious layers of raspberry, cherry, and cocoa flavors, with a hint of baking spice at the end that brings it all together. This is a big wine for grilled or smoked meats such as beef, pork, and yes, lamb. Yes, March is the “month of two seasons.” But, there’s a lot more than just a couple of wines to get you through it, so head down to your local wine shop…they’re waiting for you. Until next time, Happy vino’ing! ❖
