lowers. We welcome them eagerly in the spring after a long, cold winter, and by May the early ones are in full bloom, and the daffodils and tulips may already have come and gone. Flowers and gardens make me think of my own mother. When we lived in New England, she gardened extensively, and our yard looked absolutely gorgeous with a masterful mix of perennials and annuals. She lives in Florida now, in a maintained community, so she doesn’t have the opportunity to get out in the dirt anymore, and may even be glad of it; it was a lot of work! I did not inherit her talent, or perhaps it is that I didn’t inherit her patience for flowers, so my yard doesn’t look nearly as nice. But I am attached to some plants she gave me as roots which I have managed to propagate: some lily of the valley, bleeding hearts, and

Flowers are a classic Mother’s Day gift, so for this special day consider a houseplant or outside plant for Mom, maybe a perennial so it comes back year after year to remind her of your gift. Who’s Your Book Mom? A look at mothers in literature BY WHITNEY ARCHER

very May, we celebrate and thank our mothers and grandmothers. Everybody has a mom, who, for good or bad, shapes not only our entry into the world, but our lives afterward. We picture the ideal mother as nurturing and creative — she loves baking, crafts, and volunteering at school. But just like any other human, moms are more than mothers: they are individuals, with good and bad bound together. Indeed, what we think of as mothering should be as unique as the women themselves. And it’s no different in books. The stories we tell about mothers matter. Who do we want to be? Whom do we fear? Our literature usually tells us, if we look closely enough. I asked the librarians and staff at the Haymarket Gainesville Community Library about their favorite book moms to get a closer look at the fictional and real-life women in our lives. And their answers, like women in real life, are diverse and fascinating.

I would have to say Molly Weasley [from the Harry Potter series]. She’s fabulous and who wouldn’t want a big family like hers?” Mrs. Weasley is a loving, if overprotective, mother. And besides, who doesn’t want a few household spells to wash the dishes and make matching sweaters?

Ways the New Tax Law May Impact You BY GARY HOWARD

he most sweeping tax reform legislation in decades was enacted into law at the end of 2017. If you pay federal income taxes, you are likely to see an impact this year. As you plan your 2018 tax strategy, here are five key changes to know about the tax reform law:

Tax rates and brackets have changed Federal income tax rates progressively increase as your income rises. These are known as tax brackets. The new tax code reduces most of the ordinary tax rates and adjusts the tax brackets, applicable from 2018 to 2025. However, the

number of brackets for individual tax filers and married couples filing jointly remains at seven. For instance, in 2018 the first $19,050 of taxable income for a married couple filing a joint return is subject to a 10 percent federal income tax. For income the couple earns between $19,050 and $77,400, the ordinary tax rate for 2018 is 12 percent, lower than the 15 percent seen under the previous law. The highest ordinary income tax rate, which was previously 39.6 percent, was reduced to 37 percent and starts at $600,000 of taxable income for couples who file jointly. filing a joint return in 2017. Under the new law, the standard deduction has increased to $12,000 for a single taxpayer and $24,000 for a married couple filing a joint return. These changes are effective from 2018 through 2025, unless Congress acts to extend them.

Changes in itemized deductions For those who itemize deductions in 2018 (and through 2025), there are some significant changes, even considering the increased standard deduction. Among the most notable:

Standard deduction is nearly doubled

· The deduction for state and local taxes, including property taxes, is generally limited to a maximum of $10,000 per year. Under previous law, no maximum limit applied.

When you prepare your tax return, you have a choice of either a standard deduction, or itemizing deductions such as mortgage interest, charitable gifts, or state, local and property taxes. Under the new law, more people will use the standard deduction. (Itemized deductions are changing as well – see item number three.) The standard deduction stood at $6,350 for a single taxpayer and $12,700 for a married couple

· The ability to deduct interest on home mortgage remains, but the $1,000,000 debt limit under previous law is generally reduced to a $750,000 debt limit for home mortgages created after December 15, 2017. Also, deductions on interest paid on home equity loans (whether new or existing loans) is no longer allowed. This may make home equity loans less attractive as a borrowing option.

· Miscellaneous itemized deductions, such as investment expenses and tax preparation fees, are no longer allowed.

Personal exemptions are suspended and child tax credit is increased Under long-standing tax law prior to the new legislation, individuals could also claim personal exemptions for themselves and their dependents when filing their tax return. That exempted a portion of income from taxes. In 2017, the personal exemption was $4,050 per person. Under the new law, effective in 2018 through 2025, the personal exemptions no longer apply. If you have children, you may qualify to claim a $2,000 tax credit per qualifying child beginning in 2018 (and through 2025), double what was allowed in prior law. That is a dollarfor-dollar reduction of the taxes owed. It’s expected that more people will be able to take the credits because income limitations have been raised. Another credit of $500 is now allowed for dependents you may claim who are not qualifying children.

Expanded use of 529 plans To this point, 529 plans have provided a tax-advantaged way to save money for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition, room and board, and fees. The new law allows you to withdraw up to $10,000 tax-free per year per child from a 529 plan to help cover the K-12 tuition at a public, private or religious school. These are only some of the changes that may affect individual taxpayers. Consult with your tax advisor to understand how the new legislation may affect your circumstances. own a horse. In fact, in our family, we have three horses. And though my riding skills were once (and only) intermediate at best, I confess that I have fantasized often, flying down the stretch, finishing first, and having dozens of roses draped across my champion thoroughbred’s long, sinewy crest. And to celebrate my victory, of course, I’d open a bottle of wine… but that’s me. It’s true, if there’s one thing for which the month of May is known, it is horse racing. From the racetracks to the steeplechase yards, horse lovers and race fans alike gather at this time every year to celebrate the equine, in all its beauty, power and glory. And when they’re not sipping on the obligatory Mint Julep, a chilled bottle of rosé is the choice of the purist, for it also has its own beauty, power and glory. Sea, Domaine Sorin’s 32-acre vineyard is classified as both Bandol and Cotes de Provence… that’s as South-of-France as it gets. Organically farmed, the soils are nourished with natural compost and worked without any chemical products so as to gain the best expression of what many consider the most famous terroir in the world. The vineyard was acquired in 1994 by Luc Sorin, whom Robert Parker once labeled “the most exciting winegrower in the South of France.” Sadly, Luc recently passed away, but his legacy continues on with his children now at the helm. This year’s Terre Amata Rosé is comprised of the quintessential Provence varietals grenache, syrah, cinsault, mourvedre and carignan, yet also includes the local grape rolle and the main grape of Cognac, ugni blanc. It’s pale pink in color, with just a tinge of orange showing at the bottom of the glass. On the nose, glorious fragrances of strawberry skin, ripe watermelon, and just a hint of the sea will bring a smile to your face. At 13 percent ABV, this is a very dry rosé, but incredibly refreshing and very easy to drink either by itself or with an array of Mediterranean foods. Priced around $18, it’s also a wonderful value.

Like many of their award-winning pinot noir wines, this year’s rosé is hand-harvested. The very ripe grapes are gently whole-bunch pressed with limited skin crushing, which makes virtually a “white pinot noir.” The wine is cool fermented in stainless steel tanks. From there, carefully selected

lots of fermented red pinot noir juice are blended back for both color and texture. It’s a very unique wine, with assorted cherry fruit accents, ripe tannins, and a completely dry finish. Only 4000 cases were made and, at $20, it’s a must-have for the rosé season. Finally, we journey south to sunny California and to Sidebar Cellars, a boutique companion label to the famed Ramey Wine Cellars’ bottlings. THE SIDEBAR ROSÉ RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY 2016 is David Ramey’s first

rosé under his new label, and like the spirit of the label itself, it is a casual, but serious wine, dedicated to both quality and enjoyment. What makes this particular rosé distinctly Californian is the fact that it’s 100 percent syrah, the epic Rhone varietal. Syrah has been produced in California for years, making some of the biggest and best red wines around, but to find it in a rosé is truly unique, something only the ambitious Ramey team can achieve. It’s a richly colored wine, with both aromas and palate flavors of raspberry, cranberry, and pepper. The 2016 vintage also received “Top 100 Wines” status in Sonoma Magazine, and because of its sole syrah grape composition, it’s an age-worthy rosé, making it an outstanding, serious food wine. Priced under $25, it’s also a great value. So yes, May is indeed horse racing season, and the mint julep is certainly a traditional part of the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports. But, that’s only two minutes, and after it’s all over, it’s time to kick back, celebrate the race, and enjoy the great pink juice that has become both the spring and summer go-to bottle, known all over the world. Don’t let headaches ruin your life

eadaches may be one of the most common afflictions we share as humans. But beneath that everyday description lies a more complex web of disorders and causes. Some headaches may cause minor discomfort, but some can be extremely painful and debilitating. Some headaches may also indicate the presence of other serious health problems. Dr. Duane Campbell, a neurologist at Novant Health UVA Health System, helps explain the differences and why people who’ve suffered migraines shouldn’t give up on getting help. TYPES OF HEADACHE

Headache disorders fall into two broad categories. A primary

headache is one due to the headache condition itself and not brought on by another cause. A secondary headache is one caused by another condition. Primary headaches include tension-type headaches, migraines and cluster headaches. TENSION-TYPE HEADACHES

are often described as pain that can feel like a tight band is squeezing your head. It is the most common type of headache and accounts for about 90 percent of all headaches. Causes of tension-type headaches include emotional stress, anxiety, depression, poor posture and lack of sleep. Tension-type headaches can become disabling when they are chronic. Overusing painkillers to treat tension-type headaches

can cause daily chronic headaches. Campbell said the most common headache type he sees are migraines. “Almost two-thirds of all headaches are migraines, especially in younger patients ages 20 to 50.” MIGRAINES are well-known for being more debilitating headaches. The International Headache Society notes that migraines can take place with or without an “aura.” An aura is a warning sign that can occur hours or even a day before the onset of a migraine. Women are more likely than men to suffer from migraines. MIGRAINES WITHOUT AURA are recurrent headaches

that last anywhere between four to 72 hours.

Patients describe the moderate to severe pain as throbbing in one area of the head. During an episode, patients are very sensitive to light and sound and they may also experience nausea and vomiting. Routine physical activity such as walking can aggravate the pain. “The reality is that a lot of people may not realize they have migraines,” Campbell said. “They may think its sinus or tension. But headaches affect a lot of Americans.” “For healthy people between the ages of 20 and 50, migraines are one of the top reasons people miss work,” Campbell said. “They can be debilitating and miserable.” In cases of migraines with aura, patients experience warning symptoms hours or even a day before the attack including fatigue, sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, or blurred vision. The migraine will develop gradually over five to 20 minutes and usually last less than hour. CLUSTER HEADACHES cause intense, repeated bouts of pain on one side of the head. During a bout with cluster headaches, the pain can occur at the same time each day, often at night, and become intense for half an hour to an hour. Episodes occur regularly for a week to a year and are separated by periods without pain. Patients may also experience watery eyes and a stuffy nose during an attack. “Cluster headaches can be pretty severe, and may even be confused with having a stroke because the pupil may dilate on one side,” Campbell said.

are caused by other conditions such as high blood pressure or infections such as sinusitis or meningitis. A mild head injury can cause a headache and so can tumors in the head. Blood vessel problems, such as a hemorrhage following the rupture of an aneurysm, can also cause a severe headache. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF A HEADACHE? A number of

factors can trigger a tensiontype headache, including stress, depression, anxiety, a head injury, or holding your head and neck in an abnormal position. The pain in a tension headache usually affects both sides of the head, starting at the back and spreading forward. It can be accompanied by soreness in the shoulders, neck or jaw. Researchers are not certain what causes migraines, but most people have some triggers. “Different seasons can trigger migraines – especially if someone’s trigger is an allergic

reaction to something that blooms during specific times of the year,” Campbell said. “Different levels of caffeine or alcohol can also trigger migraines.” Foods that can trigger migraines may include chocolate or certain types of cheese or seasonings such as monosodium glutamate or nitrites in processed meats. FUTURE TREATMENT FOR MIGRAINES Currently,

migraines are treated with triptan medications, which are prescribed by a physician and available in pill, nasal spray and injection form. “You have to take these drugs in a tight time window in the early phases of a migraine in order to be effective,” Campbell said. “We know migraines happen at the worst possible time and when they happen, you only have an hour or so to get these pain-relieving drugs in your system.” New research is being done for a new class of medications that don’t require a specific time window. “For those who feel frustrated with their current options, there may be hope on the horizon,” Campbell said. He encourages those who have had migraines for years and given up on treatment to try again. “You shouldn’t have to grin and bear it, or work through the pain,” Campbell said. “There are many treatment options now and I’d encourage patients to see a neurologist about what options would work best for them.” ❖

f you aren’t passionate, or being challenged, or having fun, you will not make a change to your life, according to Kayla Stauffer and Heather Weaver, co-owners of REVive Studio in Gainesville. These two women believe in empowerment of the mind and body and have used that philosophy to build a space where friendships have flourished and Spin, TRX, and Barre classes have participants leaving feeling better than when they came in. A lifelong athlete with childhood musical interests, Stauffer discovered a love for spin class when she realized it incorporated everything she loves.

She could see and feel how motivating the combination of music and exercise was and knew right away that this was perfect for her. “Sharing this with the community and spreading positivity throughout each and every class is what makes me who I am — strong, motivating, supportive, energetic, caring, and all over electric,” she says. Now, having taught over 300 classes in just 10 short months, you’d never know she had just discovered her new passion less than two years ago. “As a health and fitness coach, I discovered my love for helping others find their own happiness within themselves through healthy living, and wanted to continue spreading that positive change throughout my community,” she says. These high-school classmates followed each other’s fitness journeys online for years. Stauffer, a previous studio owner in Pennsylvania, would come back to Virginia to visit her family and seek out an exercise class to take. She quickly realized there weren’t any places that quite fit her needs. The two friends’ mutual interests sparked an idea and they began to talk about the possibility of opening a studio. They visualized what it would look and, more importantly, feel like. With some encouragement from their families, they decided to go for it. When a space in the Madison Crescent shopping center in Gainesville became available, Weaver and Stauffer jumped at the opportunity and began to transform it into their dream studio. There were a few factors that were on top of the list of priorities that Weaver and Stauffer wanted to incorporate. One was to provide affordable child care so that parents would not have to sacrifice their fitness goals for their budget. Another was to make sure REVive was built in a way to allow members to gather and get to know one another on a more personal level; they wanted an intimate feel. They felt it should also be a place where people could come to push themselves both physically and mentally, connect their minds and bodies, and just let go to focus on themselves. they have formed with their members. “It’s the best workout I’ve ever had” is commonly heard from the mostly women clients at REVive Studio. It validates that Weaver and Stauffer are succeeding in their mission to change the mindset and erase the negative stigma that surrounds the exercise community for some people. Instead of dreading their time at the gym, these members often report they can’t wait to get to class. Weaver and Stauffer feel privileged to be able to witness the life changes that are happening daily at REVive Studio. When clients’ bodies and moods change, their outlook also changes. The women have witnessed the friendships that have formed between members and also between members and instructors. The members rely on the instructors to help them get to where they want to be. ulips. Squirrels dig up the bulbs before they have a chance to bloom. If a bulb does manage to produce a bud, chances are good that when we go out to check on that potential flower the deer have eaten the bud in the meantime and left us a stem. If, by some miracle, we actually get to see a tall, colorful, fragrant tulip bloom by the next year, it is a flower half the expected size on a flimsy stem. And yet, every year I buy bulbs because I fall in love with their pictures and hope that maybe I will get to see those beautiful flowers in my own yard. Why? Because they are tulips. I have hundreds of deer-proof bulbs: daffodils, crocus, different types of hyacinths, snowdrops, and others. I truly look forward to seeing all of them bloom but the small group of tulip leaves in a tight corner behind the boxwoods is what I am watching most closely. Maybe I will get blooms which look like the picture on the package when I selected these eight white lumps in thin brown papery wrappings last fall. Just maybe. I might really like tulips and wish that I had fields of them but no one has ever loved, no, coveted, tulips like the Dutch did between 1634 and 1637. Let’s look into the flower’s fascinating history. Originally cultivated in the Ottoman Empire, the tulip was introduced to Europe when the Austrian ambassador to the court of Suleyman the Magnificent sent a small shipment of bulbs back to the Hapsburg court in 1554. The Turks had taken tulips from the wild and bred them to be something very different. In the wild they were short with open, starlike flowers; the Turks bred them to be long and slim, with petals that were almost dagger-like. They had patience and enthusiasm and enjoyed the tulip’s propensity to mature differently than the original flower the seed derived from. In fact, it was the constant changing nature of tulips that

caused them to be thought of as the flower that is the most blessed by Nature because she played with it more than any other bloom. In the Ottoman Empire at the time, tulips flourished as natural selection came into play: bees were attracted to the biggest and brightest flowers, and the Turks were selecting and reproducing the biggest and brightest blooms. Man and nature worked together at producing an abundance of amazing flowers. During the “Tulip Era” from 1718 to 1730, the Ottoman Empire’s Sultan Ahmed III’s love of tulips was so great that he held extravagant celebrations with the gardens filled with candles, music, lights and dancing girls every night the tulips were in bloom. These celebrations were so over-the-top that it was one of the factors leading to his being overthrown in 1730. Let’s go back to Europe. As it traveled from one royal court to another, the tulip was already seen as something special to be valued. As with all things royal, tulips were something rare and sought after by the wealthy. In 1593, a famous bulb specialist, horticulturalist Carolus Clusius, took some Viennese bulbs with him to Holland. Because he was so boastful and covetous of his tulip bulbs and because he refused to part with them at any price, some angry but enterprising tulip enthusiasts banded together and stole the bulbs from him. Clusius was so broken from this that he gave up cultivating bulbs completely. However, the thieves embarked on tulip production at full throttle. Because the seeds from one

tulip can produce many different varieties of flowers, Holland was soon filled with hundreds of different varieties. Sometimes one tulip in a garden of perhaps a hundred would bloom differently than the rest. It would unfurl with streaks of a contrasting color on the main body, often called flames, or feathers. That one unusual bulb was the prize bulb that could be sold for large amounts of money; a single bulb could even be used as currency to buy things of value like a house. Legends abound, including one about a miller that exchanged his whole mill for one bulb and a bridegroom that accepted one tulip as sufficient dowry. The Dutch tried some crazy things to increase the frequency of these special blooms, including sprinkling dry pigment powder over beds of white tulip bulbs. Unknown to them, the variations actually came from a virus that was spread from tulip to tulip by aphids. Because the prized, unusual bulbs were caused by a virus, the flowers were beautiful, but sick, and produced less-than-healthy bulbs. Trading in tulip bulbs became so intense that people left thriving occupations to become bulb traders. Where the actual bulbs were once the currency, promissory notes for future bulbs were starting to be traded. Then on February 2, 1637, the auction market opened and there was no one willing to speculate with enormous amounts of money on the pieces of paper that represented a possible future bulb with a special flower. And just like a stock market crashing from over inflated values, the Dutch tulip market tanked. The only thing that survived was

the Dutch knowledge and love for growing tulips. Holland is still a major producer of tulip bulbs. A tulip growers year starts in October when the bulbs are planted, and then a winter cover is put on in November. In the spring the flowers are cut off so the bulbs can grow larger. In July, the bulbs are dug up and then graded by size. In August and September they are checked, packed, crated for shipping and then checked again by the USDA before being loaded for shipping from Rotterdam. From September to December they are re-inspected before being sent to distributors and sales rooms. Two things are important to note here in this calendar. First, if you see bulbs for sale before September they are probably inferior in size or leftover from last year; the big colorful bags that are full of peat moss and subgrade bulbs are not worth buying. Wait until you can select the bulbs yourself, or order from a reputable catalog. Second, be grateful for all of the inspections. These ensure that we are getting healthy bulbs and not bringing unwanted diseases into our gardens. I wish I could tell you how to have a fabulous tulip display, but I can’t. There are several products and home remedies that promise success, like wire cages for the bulbs and various powders to toss them in before planting. One year, I put a daffodil bulb in each hole on top of the tulip bulb to throw the marauders off the scent. It actually did keep them from digging them up but did not keep them from eating the flowers. Try all of the things you use to save your roses, lilies, phlox and hostas: spray, sprinkle, and wire. The big spring display at my house is from all different kinds of daffodils, mixed with lots of other bulbs that deer do not like. But I’m still really hoping that the clump of tulip leaves in the sheltered corner actually turns out to be the glorious salmon-pink tulips from the bulbs I planted last fall. or garden. Hydrangeas, azaleas, and azalea topiaries are popular for Mother’s Day. A perennial for the garden that comes back year after year is always a nice remembrance. Maybe a selection of potted herbs in a basket or a pot? Sometimes the best bouquets are the ones picked by children; take them out into the yard or wildflower fields and let them select what they think is prettiest for Mom!

tips: Communicate directly with your local flower shop rather than ordering from an online company. You will get better service, and it is easier to communicate what you’d like. They will also be able to recommend the freshest flowers.

A live hydrangea can be enjoyed for years to come once planted in the garden! But try waiting until early fall to plant. Summer conditions can sometimes be too harsh for newly planted shrubs.

Choose a vase over a basket for your arrangement. The flowers will last longer; the baskets use an oasis (the green foam block) for arrangements which is much less efficient in delivering water to the flower. If you do receive a basket with an oasis, be sure to keep it wet. Once it dries out, it will not reabsorb water.

If you receive a bouquet with the stems in small water pics, put them in water immediately. They will absorb that small amount of water overnight. The water in a vase should be changed (not just refilled) every 3 days. Every time you change the water cut a small bit off the bottoms of the stems to give the flower a clean opening to absorb the water.

Order your flowers by Monday or Tuesday of the week before Mother’s Day to allow for Saturday delivery. Flower shops in this area will be especially busy this year since prom falls on the day before Mother’s Day. Cut flowers should not be in sunlight or around heat.

hat photographer would even think of putting flour in a model’s hair and having her flip her head for a movement shot of the flour flying everywhere? Or take action shots of a model being splattered with paint? These are just some of the things high school senior and photographer Hannah Phillips has done for her creative photography portfolio. With a photography business, school, and volunteering with Serve our Willing Warriors in Haymarket, Hannah is quite a busy and accomplished young lady. While maintaining straight A’s in school and volunteering, she still has developed an impressive portfolio of her photography work. She is energetic, determined, and talented, and can’t wait to graduate from high school to see what life has in store for her. Recently, Hannah shared information about her life and aspirations with Piedmont Lifestyle.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY.

I started in 2014, just having fun doing small shoots with friends. As my client base grew, I realized it was more than just a hobby. I began to specialize in portraits with individuals and families. I developed the right techniques such as the perfect setting, lighting, and composition to capture memories and make the photos unique. With the help of YouTube tutorials, my inspiration grew and I developed my own style to enhance my photography. I’ve expanded my interest to collaborate with other creatives and start to capture edgy and elusive fashion lifestyle. One shoot included glass pyramids as the background and I experimented shooting at different angles and being more creative with my photography.

Beer Enthusiasts are Celebrating Even more micro-brew options are now available in the area BY DEBBIE EISELE

or those who know me, I enjoy a good beer. In my house there are two types of beer enthusiasts: the hops lover and wheat beer lover. Each inherently believes their option is the best. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment around us as we debate over the type of beer we think is better. Although our preferences don’t align with one another well, we do both enjoy a good brew. The IPA fever is popular these days, as are local breweries – especially those focusing on using regionally grown hops. Infused brews offer flavors unique to each creator; some are even infused with fruit, while others showcase the flavors of the season. No matter your preference, there truly is a beer for everyone to enjoy. Locally, Fauquier and Prince William county have followed the country’s enthusiasm for microbreweries. Within a short driving distance there are several options for brew enthusiasts to find just the “right” option. Here is a list of the area destinations for you to visit and sample the offerings. THE MAIN INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO CREATE BEER: Grain (barley, wheat, rye, rice, sorghum and others), hops, water, and yeast

WHAT ARE HOPS? Essentially, hops are a flower that grows on a vine (Humulus lupulus). Hops are the beer ingredient that is responsible for the bitter, malty flavor in many brews. There are many varieties of this plant, so the overall flavor will be different based upon which hops are utilized in the beer brewing. Hops are also used in brew because the plant has an innate ability to ward off bacteria, which helps in beer preservation. INTERESTING FACT: Hops is part of the Cannabinaceae plant family, as is Cannabis. If you wish to tout your knowledge about plant material, it may be a fun fact to share. The shop continues to thrive today in the same Haymarket location, selling only highend designer items. It is clear from their social media that The Very Thing for Her boutique brings with it a dedicated following of skilled shoppers who are keen on brands, fashion, and designer names. With a storefront property and an online shopping experience offered to its patrons, The Very Thing for Her brings the glamour of Neimen Marcus, the shine of Michael Kohrs, and the class of Chanel to the Piedmont at a discounted price. It is one of the only retailers in Virginia north of Charlottesville to sell exclusively these high-end fashions.

The store operates solely through consignments. It has a hefty list of do’s and don’ts for its consignors and a long list of brands that will not be accepted. This integrity and quality control maintain the excellence sought by its customers. Once Lisa and Terree select fashion items to be consigned, the agreement states the consignor will receive 50 percent of the sale. Items are sold at a dramatically reduced price off the standard retail price and customers are often given an additional promotional discount for holidays and sales. Last year’s Christmas sales boasted up to 40 percent off the consignment price.
