hope you’re enjoying the cooler weather we’ve begun to have. I know I am. Like many of us, I was weary of melting as soon as I walked out my door, and tired of entering the supermarket soaked in sweat only to freeze as soon as I stepped inside! It’s not only the drop in temperature that makes me love the fall, though. It’s the chance to visit my favorite cideries – several of which we’ve profiled here – and hand out treats on Halloween. I get such a kick out of the costumes. If you need creative, inexpensive ideas for your trick-or-treater this year, don’t miss Kerry Molina’s do-it-yourself-with-stuff-you-found-in-your-closet column inside. One of my other favorite things about this time of year is the rich color combinations - the burnt oranges, golden yellows, deep greens, and bright pinks. The pinks, of course, mean “schedule your mammogram, stat!” and if you haven’t, I hope you will. I also hope you’ll take a moment to read Christine Craddock’s terrific feature on Dr. John Williams. He’s the brains behind the Breast Cancer School for Patients and he’s committed to giving those with breast cancer the tools they need to make informed decisions about their care. Cheers!

Celebrate October with a Good Horror Book

BY MELINDA CASILLI

T

he first thing that comes to mind when most people think of October is Halloween. In my opinion, October is so much more. I think it epitomizes fall. The air is cool and crisp. The trees display their gorgeous leaves in hues of red and yellow. It’s the perfect month for pumpkin picking, finding your way out of a corn maze, or if you’re courageous enough, exploring a haunted house. Let’s not forget about all the delicious food and drinks available in pumpkin spice. All these things make October awesome, but my favorite is the beginning of cooler weather. I love curling up with a fuzzy blanket and a good book. This year, to fully celebrate fall and get into the spirit of Halloween, I decided to step out of my book comfort zone and read something from the horror genre. I thought it would be fun to try something new. But what constitutes a book as horror? Literaryterms. net defines horror as “a genre of fiction whose purpose is to create feelings of fear,

8

{ OCTOBER 2019 |

dread, repulsion, and terror in the audience—in other words, it develops an atmosphere of horror.” That’s not something I typically want to experience just for fun. But it is October, so in honor of the upcoming, ghoulish holiday, I’ll give a horror book a try. It’s only a book. I think I can handle a book. I’m not familiar with authors in this genre, besides Stephan King and Anne Rice. To help me find more authors, I pulled up the Prince William County Library System online card catalog at pwcgov.org/library. To get to the catalog: 1. Click on the third green square labeled “Books, Catalogs, and More.” 2. On the next page, click on the large blue rectangle labeled “Catalog Search” and type the word “horror” into the keyword search. 3. In the “Search By” field, click on the down arrow and select “Genre.” 4. The next field, “Limit By” can be left as-is to produce more results.

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

5. Finally, click “Go!” and more than 200 search results will come up along with a section on the side of the screen labeled “Narrow your search.” Here, you can narrow your selection by the type of material, subject, authors, publication date, popularity, target audience, language, or assigned branch. I narrowed my search by choosing a book for “Type of Material.” I thought ghost stories sounded interesting for “Subject” and then I picked Adult as the “Target Audience.” Narrowing my search gave me three books to choose from. I picked The Dead House by Billy O’Callaghan. It was available immediately as an ebook through hoopla digital which I can use for free because I have a library card. So far, I’m really enjoying it. Who knows? I might discover I really like horror… even if I have to read with all the lights on! If you’re not too scared to venture out of the house after reading some scary stories, we have some great Halloween-themed programs happening at our libraries. Join us for a Costume Swap at Haymarket Gainesville Community Library on Saturday, October 19 and a Howl-o-Week program on Monday, October 21 at 4:00 p.m. We’ll also have Halloween Story Times and Parades for the little ones on the following dates and times: • Potomac Community Library: Monday, October 28, 10:30 a.m. (ages 3 – 6); Wednesday, October 30, 10:30 a.m. (ages 18 – 36 months); Thursday, October 31, 6:30 p.m. (all ages/ families) • Montclair Community Library: Wednesday, October 30, 10:30 a.m. • Bull Run Regional Library: Thursday, October 31, 10:30 a.m. • Central Community Library: Thursday, October 31, 10:30 a.m. • Chinn Park Regional Library: Thursday, October 31, 10:30 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. • Nokesville Neighborhood Library: Thursday, October 31, 4:30 p.m. ❖

benefits of the harvest without having to get up with the chickens? Several local farms and orchards including Stribling Orchard, Yankey Farms, and Valley View Farm are open to the public for picking apples, pears, pumpkins, and the like. There is live entertainment provided at several, including every weekend at Stribling Orchard, but the intent is “for the families to unwind, unplug, and make memories.” All three farms are family-owned and represent the effort involved in maintaining family-run farms in an era of commercialized farming. In order to keep the farms solvent and within the family, they turned to “pick your own” farming after World War II. Pick your own farms charge flat rates per pound, depending on the produce. Now everyone in the Piedmont can experience life on the farm in their own laid back way.

abor Day has come and gone and it’s now time to turn our attention to the changing seasons, upcoming holidays and the perfect weather for being outdoors. Fall in Virginia is a great time to be outside with cooling temperatures, few insects, changing foliage, and ample sunshine. In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that the best time to visit our state is between September 3 and October 28, which also means that’s the best time for us locals to take advantage of living here. What better way to enjoy our area than to play the part of the farmer and reap the

The three farms are also varied enough that it would be a great fall if you could visit all three. The eighteenth-century Stribling Farm is a beautiful setting to pick apples then picnic, gaze at the Blue Ridge, check out the farm animals, listen to music, and stock up on bakery items, honey, and cider! At Yankey Farms, the Great Pumpkin Patch is available for self picking from the end of September to the end of October. There is also a corn maze scavenger hunt, cow train ride, hay piles, pedal tractors, and other activities for kids as well as thousands of pumpkins. You can also stock up on fresh corn and local sustainably-raised beef. Customer satisfaction is their goal and they believe they are “one of the most affordable fall events in Northern Virginia.” Valley View Farm has been under the stewardship of the Strother family for five generations now and has become a onestop weekend getaway. Not only do you have a great selection of apples, pears, and pumpkins to pick from this fall, but the family has recently partnered with Philip

In addition, there is also The Orchard Branch Collection of furniture and art handcrafted by local artisans. “We are thrilled to provide a complete destination experience for customers who appreciate locally produced edible products who we refer to as Locavores.” Like Stribling Orchard, the farm was first laid out in the eighteenth century and has a connection to none other than George Washington. The site also hosts weddings, corporate events, church outings, and other celebrations. There is even a retreat house capable of sleeping 14 guests. This fall is the time to get out of the house, away from the traffic and enjoy some quality time with family and friends before old man winter forces you indoors. DIRECTIONS: Puréed Pumpkin 1. Preheat oven to 350°F 2. Slice your pumpkin in half and remove the stem, seeds, and stringy portions, scraping the inside until clean, leaving the skin on. 3. Place the pumpkin halves cut side down on a baking sheet. 4. Roast until the inside of the pumpkin flesh is soft and the skin can be pierced with a fork, about 4045 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. 5. Scoop out the softened flesh and purée in a food processor until smooth.

Classic Pumpkin Pie — from real pumpkins RECIPE AND PHOTO BY NATALIE ORTIZ

ith the approach of harvest season for apples and pumpkins, it’s time to start thinking towards the holidays. Pumpkin pie is easy, right? Using those cans of pumpkin pie filling from the grocery store, you can whip it up in a snap, especially if you’re using store-bought pie crust. But maybe treat your family to something more authentic this holiday season. It’s really not hard to make pumpkin pie from actual pumpkins — it’s a simple matter of roasting them in the oven until the flesh is soft, and then puréeing it in a food processor. Using fresh pumpkin puree gives the pie a creamier mouth feel and a thicker, better texture, well worth the effort! Sugar pumpkins are the best pumpkins to use for roasting and pies. They are usually smaller than your regular jack-o-lantern variety, are less stringy, and have a firm, sweet-savory flesh that makes a smooth purée once roasted, making them ideal for soups or — in this instance — pies. A good rule of thumb is that one 3-4 pound roasted sugar pumpkin yields approximately 3-4 cups of pumpkin purée. They’ll be at your local farmers market soon!

INGREDIENTS For the crust: 12 tbsp. unsalted butter 3 cups all-purpose flour 1½ tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. kosher salt cup very cold vegetable shortening, such as Crisco ¼ cup ice water ¼ cup vodka, chilled For the pumpkin custard filling: 1 sugar pumpkin, ~3-4 lbs. ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup brown sugar 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour ½ tsp. sea salt 1½ tsp. ground ginger 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon ¾ tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. ground cloves 3 large eggs, beaten 1¼ cups evaporated milk

}

Pie Crust 1. Cut the butter & shortening into cubes (sized about ½ TBSP) and place in the freezer for 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, place the flour, sugar, and salt into a food processor using the blade insert and pulse a few times to mix. 3. Add the butter and shortening to the processor, and pulse until the butter is the size of small pebbles. Continue pulsing while simultaneously pouring the ice water and vodka down the feed tube until the dough begins to form a ball. 4. On a floured board, divide into two equal portions and roll into balls. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Note: You will only be using one ball of dough for this pie, so you can reserve the other for another use. Pie Filling 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugars, flour, salt, and spices. 2. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs, 2 cups of the pumpkin purée, and evaporated milk. Whisk into the dry ingredients. For best flavor, cover and refrigerate the filling overnight before baking. Assembling the pie 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Roll one dough ball out on a well-floured board into a circle. Be sure to roll the dough about 1” larger than the pie pan. 3. Fold the dough into quarters and gently transfer it into the pie pan, being careful not to stretch it. Unfold the crust to fit the pan. Cut the dough 1 inch larger around than the pan. Fold the edge under and crimp the edge with either your fingers or the tines of a fork. 4. When the oven is hot, place the pie pan on a baking sheet. Pour the filling into the unbaked pie shell and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The filling should be set 2" in from the edge, but the center will be wobbly. Remove the pie from the oven and cool on a rack; the center will finish cooking through as the pie rests. Overcooking will result in cracked custard filling. ❖

veryone loves apple pie, but when you come home from a morning of apple picking with the kids, you’ll be happy you’re making muffins instead. (No homemade pie crust required!) This recipe for Apple Crumb muffins is one of my favorites. It’s my “company is coming over and these will wow them” muffin, my “last minute playdate and I need muffins” muffin, and my “eek, the freezer is low on muffins so better make a bunch!” muffin. I think the crumb topping is what really sends them over the top and hope your family enjoys them as much as ours does.

INGREDIENTS: 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1 1/2 c. packed brown sugar 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 tsp. baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 1 cup whole milk buttermilk 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cup diced and peeled apples from about 2 apples

For the Crumb Topping 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup chopped pecans cup flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 T. melted butter

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat your oven to 375. Coat your muffin tin with baking spray or butter. If you’re using multiple racks, trying cooking on convection. 2. Mix the dry ingredients, flour through salt in one bowl and, in a separate bowl, mix the egg through vanilla. Combine the wet and dry ingredients then add the apples. Stir until just combined and then, using a little muffin scoop or tablespoon, divide into greased muffin tins. 3. Next, make the crumb topping. Mix the brown sugar through butter and spoon onto muffins evenly. 4. Bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes or until center comes out clean when tested with a toothpick. If you’re making larger muffins they will bake closer to 25 minutes.

BY KERRY MOLINA

alloween is but another chance to whip out your creativity and what a great opportunity to come up with something unique. Don’t spend a ton of money on a store-bought costume. Instead, start with items you already own and/or things that are easy to get your hands on locally at Dollar Tree, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or Goodwill. Here are a few ideas. Try one of these creative, fun and cost-effective get-ups, or let them inspire one of your own!

COSTUME: MARY POPPINS

COSTUME: SPAGHETTI

COSTUME: CHEF

COSTUME: CRAZY CAT LADY

There are lots of costumes you can build around an umbrella. Think about attaching items to the umbrella with fishing wire. How about little plastic cats and dogs and go as “Raining Cats and Dogs,” or photos of attractive male movie stars to go as “It’s Raining Men!” This Mary Poppins costume was built around the umbrella, too. You just need a black skirt, white shirt, red ribbon, hat and artificial flowers.

A chef and his spaghetti, the perfect couple. Wear red sweats. Purchase a mop. Trim off the ends and glue on bunches along with brown pom-pom “meatballs.” Put the rest of the mop on your head for hair and finalize the look with a colander as a hat. This costume is perfect for kids, too.

With a white apron, anyone can become a chef. Add a paper chef’s hat and a mustache and your husband is Chef Boyardee in no time. A wooden spoon, whisk and a menu in the apron pocket add a few nice finishing touches.

No one wants to spend a ton of money on costumes for toddlers. After all, they only wear them once. Dress your little one as a “Crazy Cat Lady” This even uses little stuffed animals (cats in this case) that your child probably already has. Put her hair in rollers, add some fuzzy slippers and you have a funny outfit. This could obviously work for adults as well. A guy in this get-up would be hilarious!

ITEM: UMBRELLA

ITEM: MOP

ITEM: APRON

ITEM: BATHROBE

I hope I’ve gotten your creative juices flowing. Here are a few other items around which you could build costumes: bandanas (cowboys, Rosie the Riveter), wings (butterfly, fairy, tooth fairy, social butterfly—complete with social media icons). Even a sash and a tiara could turn you into Miss Informed, Miss Behaved, Miss Understood…you get the idea. Have fun with creating your own costumes and have a safe and happy Halloween!

his October, as was last October, is Virginia Wine Month. I hope you enjoyed many of Virginia’s great wines this past year! For this year’s fall feature, however, the spotlight turns to another great Virginia libation, perfect for the autumnal season…hard cider. By traditional definition, hard cider is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples. Whereas apple cider and apple juice are essentially the same thing, separated only by filtration and pasteurization processes, hard cider is its own unique drink. An ancient beverage, hard cider has no discernible origins, which essentially holds true for apples as well. But, it’s been around seemingly forever and is produced all over the world. It’s wildly popular in Europe; in fact, the UK has the highest consumption rate in the world, plus many top producing hard cider companies are located there. Styles and flavors of hard cider can vary greatly, as well as the regulations imposed upon its production, depending on where and how it’s produced. For example, Canadian regulations state that cider can’t be called cider unless apples are used. Being that one can ferment juice from an array of fruits – pears for example – this is an important distinction. Also, alcohol levels and apple juice percentages help to define various styles, from dry and traditional to fruity and modern; and additional contents such as sugar or extra fruit juice can also come into play, giving hard cider that much more variance.

TOP, LEFT: Cider so good, even four-legged guests like it! BOTTOM: Mt. Defiance partner and cider maker, Marc Chretien, far right.

Closer to home… Virginia ranks 6th in the nation in apple production (by acreage) and has quietly become a haven for hard cider lovers, with more than twenty cideries peppered throughout the state. Ciders, in general, have a textural history in the Commonwealth, prominent

in Colonial times and in the 19th century. In more recent times, Virginia became the first state in the country to have “Cider Week,” as declared in 2012 by then Governor McDonnell. This year’s week of festivities will be November 15 – 24th, leading up to Thanksgiving, as is tradition. Around the greater NoVA region, there are several wonderful cideries to visit, and spending a weekend afternoon at one of the many is a fantastic way to get connected with the fall season. In Middleburg, the heart of horse country, there’s a beautiful cidery called Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery. Housed in a stunning barn - their Cidery Barn – Mt. Defiance partners Marc Chretien (cider maker) and Peter Ahlf (distiller) have created the perfect backdrop to enjoy their handcrafted, small batch ciders. There’s a separate distillery in downtown Middleburg that also functions as a tasting room for both their ciders and spirits. Back at the cidery, which sits atop a hill on the eastern edge of town, Mt. Defiance offers both classic and craft ciders, ranging from traditional farmhouse blends to single varieties. In addition to some tasty fruit-infused ciders, such as blueberry and ginger, they produce an English ale yeast influenced cider called Old Volstead’s, similar in both taste and finish reminiscent of, you guessed it, an English ale. Their featured cider is called General's Reserve Hard Cider, aged in an oak bourbon barrel. It’s strong, dark and complemented with whiskey notes plus hints of vanilla and caramel, and was named in honor of General John Allen, Commanding General of all forces in Afghanistan from 20112013, for whom Chretien served as political advisor while there. Head west on Highway 50 for about 35 miles and you wind up in Winchester. Just northwest of

town is Winchester Ciderworks. Stephen Schuurman, a British winemaker turned cider master, and Diane Kearns, a fifth generation orchardist of German/ English descent, partnered up less than a decade ago and created this jewel of a place. As they’ll tell you, “marrying old world tradition and new world knowhow” is what makes Winchester Ciderworks unique. Offering four different signature ciders and five barrelaged creations, there are plenty of great options to enjoy. Their flagship cider, Malice, is a ‘proper English cider,’ a slowly fermented and lightly effervescent blend of five apple varieties. The barrelaged ciders are called Wicked Wiles and are aged for more than nine months in oak barrels that were once used for the aging of different spirits, including bourbon, rye, brandy and rum… all of them are uniquely their own experience to be enjoyed. As is cider house tradition, WC also offers a reserve series of ciders called Thwaite's Reserve. Named after James Thwaite, who settled the family farm in 1880 and planted the first five hundred York Imperial and Baldwin apple trees, these ciders are slowly, naturally fermented using the yeasts abundant within the apples, and bottled with no filtration nor carbonation, as in the times of Thwaite himself. Mt. Defiance and Winchester Ciderworks are just two of the many great cideries in NoVA. Other notable stops include Cobbler Mountain (Delaplane), Wild Hare (Leesburg), Hinson Ford Cider & Mead (Amissville) and Lost Boy Cider (Alexandria). This fall get to know your ciders and visit a local cidery…it’s another great way to experience all that is wonderful about Virginia. Until next time, Happy Cider’ing and Vino’ing! ❖

GOING GAINESVILLE GOES TO PIEDMONT TIRE AND AUTO BY LESLEY SALMAN

W

ith our visit last issue to Eugene's Sausage and Fries under our belts, we stopped off to check out some other belts in town - timing and serpentine to be exact - at Piedmont Tire and Auto. Piedmont Tire and Auto has garnered the title of Best of Auto Repair for 2019, but that's no surprise. This is the ninth year in a row they’ve won! This time around, I was fortunate to have Bruce Potter as my co-host. Bruce is the chief operating officer of the amazing local news source InsideNova.com and, or course, Lifestyle Magazines. Together we sat down with none other than John Filipone, operations manager of both Piedmont Tire and Auto locations in Haymarket and Gainesville, who filled us in on all the services the

shop provides including tires, engines and transmissions, computers, safety and emissions, alignments, and even restorations. The only auto-related thing they don’t do is bodywork (so try not to hit a deer or anything else for that matter!). How has Piedmont Tire and Auto been able to stay on top for so long? It's all in the amazing customer service they consistently provide to their more than twohundred customers per day. And you know what? They don’t call them customers. They refer to them as family. That uber high level of caring customer service includes providing a shuttle service, offering loaner vehicles and occasionally making house calls. One of Piedmont Tire and Autos major goals - and one of the keys to its incredible popularity -

is to return your vehicle to you when you need it. So, when scheduling an appointment, let the shop know when you need your vehicle back by and they will make every effort to get it to you in your timeframe. And if all that is not enough, John runs the Western Prince William County Chatter Facebook page comprised of twenty-two thousand members. On it he and Piedmont Tire and Auto host the most generous giveaways. From performing free repairs for veterans and families impacted by cancer, to events for teachers, nurses and law enforcement. Piedmont Tire and Auto is more than the best in auto repair and service; they’re quite possibly the best at helping the community and giving back. So next time you hear a squeak, rattle or just want to confirm your car is safe to take on that big road trip, stop on in and see why Piedmont Tire and Auto has taken the Best of crown nine years in a row. And to catch our visit with John Filipone, go to Facebook.com/goinggainesvilleva, click on “Videos” then scroll down and click on the Piedmont Tire and Auto banner. Going Gainesville will be back next month to celebrate another of the Haymarket and Gainesville businesses you voted Best this year, so don’t miss this space or our video spotlights on all your local favorites on Facebook! ❖

DESIGN 101:

It’s Five O’clock Somewhere...

“What can I do to make entertaining more convenient? When should I start decorating for the holidays?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. This month’s column focuses on a simple option to make entertaining easier.

WHAT ELSE IS NEEDED FOR A WELL-STOCKED BAR CART?

IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO MAKE HAVING COMPANY OVER FOR THE EVENING SIMPLER?

It is important to remember a towel (often draped over the handle) in the event of condensation or accidents, an ice bucket, cocktail napkins, an assortment of the appropriate stemware and glasses, optionally a tray to present the items...and the often forgotten bottle opening device. For most of us it is a bottle opener and corkscrew, but we have seen sabers and other less conventional options.

Absolutely. One stylish option is to get and stock a bar cart. These space saving devices are significantly less expensive than putting in a full bar (especially a wet one) and being mobile can be brought out when needed and then put away. They are available in numerous styles and finishes, so coordinating with your decor is usually no problem.

A silver champagne chiller is not only a functional item in this regard, but it makes a beautiful centerpiece when filled with greenery. Several of the local estate and second hand establishments have them in from time to time at extremely reasonable prices. PRO TIP

If you are concerned that your floor is not entirely even, look for a model with two wheels. This way when you stop moving the cart it shouldn’t continue to roll. PRO TIP

I LIKE THE CONCEPT, BUT I NEED MORE SPACE THAN A CART. WHAT CAN I DO? In this case, we recommend getting a bar cabinet. Often mounted on taller legs to raise it to counter height, a bar cabinet is simply a larger immobile version of the bar cart. Traditionally mirrored and often internally lit it houses all the tools, decanters, and assorted accoutrement that are needed to prepare your preferred potation. If you purchase a bar cabinet, opt for “whiteglove” delivery. This way it will be brought into your residence and set up for you. Let someone else deal with the lifting and liability. You’ll thank us later. PRO TIP

WHAT IF I AM NOT A DRINKER? Assuming that your guests are also not drinkers, there are numerous non-alcoholic libations that can be brought out on the cart as well. There are fantastic and elaborate drinks that can be made with no alcohol at all under the heading “mock-tails.” These are normally served in the same glassware and use the same tools as any well stocked bar, so you’ll definitely want to have them on hand. PRO TIP

24

WHAT ABOUT IF I WANT SOMETHING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY? While normally we don’t recommend anything involving fire “for the whole family,” we are going to make an exception. There are personal sized indoor approved tabletop fire bowls. Grab a handful of bamboo skewers and marshmallows and when you wheel out the cart prepare for squeals of delight. Mini s’mores made on an easy to clean tray is a sure winner, and vegan marshmallows work just as well if that means that everyone can participate.

A beautiful tea service is another option, and a good chance to show off heirloom pieces that otherwise might sit in storage.

There are units that not only don’t smoke, but have built in tip sensors that automatically douse the flame in the event of an overly exuberant response. And... you can operate them with your smartphone.

ADVERTORIAL

Let’s Talk About Mammograms BY SUSAN TULINO

I

f you’re seeing pink throughout the month of October, it’s with good cause – it’s Breast Cancer Awareness month. During the month of October, companies and organizations across the globe help to remind women to take active steps in managing their breast health by getting “in the pink.” Maria E. Pace, MD, a breast-imaging specialist with Novant Health UVA Health System UVA Breast Care Center, explains the importance of mammogram screenings. “Scheduling a mammogram is an important first step for women in supporting their overall and breast health,” according to Dr. Pace. “As our knowledge of breast cancer and its causes, risk factors and treatments has expanded, so has our commitment to early detection,” said Dr. Pace. “All normal risk women beginning at age 40 should include mammograms in their routine health screenings.” According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity, with nearly 250,000 cases diagnosed through mammograms in 2016. Novant Health UVA Health System offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as 3D mammography, at both Prince William and Haymarket Medical Centers. 3D mammography is a relatively new advancement that supports early detection of breast cancer. 3D mammography is a state-of-the-art technology that allows radiologists to image the tissue inside a woman’s breast layer by layer. An X-ray arm sweeps over the patient and captures images one-millimeter at a time, which allows doctors to see fine details more clearly once it’s all pieced together. This helps lead to earlier detection, better visualization and fewer patient callbacks. “Mammograms are very important, especially as women get older,” said Dr. Pace. “The earlier we are able to detect abnormalities, the higher the likelihood

of the patient beating the disease. The hope is, if we catch cancerous tissue early enough, treatment will be quicker and have minimal effects on a woman’s livelihood.” “Just as important as having your mammogram done in the first place, however, is having it evaluated by a trained professional,” said Dr. Pace. “All mammograms done through Novant Health UVA Health System are read by UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists.” These radiologists have the proper training to detect small cancers in very early stages, which means they are more likely to get treated before they are able to spread or metastasize to another part of the body. Novant Health UVA Health System offers another unique service – the mobile mammography unit. This service aims to ensure all women have access to high-quality breast health services, regardless of ability to pay or travel to a full-service imaging center, by bringing mammography machines to women where they live and work. Local communities observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month by recognizing and honoring current breast cancer patients and survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Medical centers often host education and awareness events that invite local women to learn about breast health and receive their annual mammogram screenings in a supportive, informative and fun environment. “At Novant Health UVA Health System, we take our commitment to women’s health services and awareness very seriously,” said Dr. Pace. “Our mobile mammography unit has been a game-changer for women who previously didn’t have the means to get to an imaging center. We also host annual Ladies’ Night Out events to educate women on breast cancer screenings, treatments and other resources. Attendees are also given the option to receive a mammogram during the events. We try to make these important screenings easy and accessible for all.”❖

Ladies’ Night Out Events Date: Tuesday, October 1 Time: 5:30-8:00 pm Location: Prince William Medical Center – 8700 Sudley Road, Manassas Date: Thursday, October 10 Time: 5:30-8:00 pm Location: Heathcote Health Center Multi-office Building adjoining Haymarket Medical Center – 15195 Heathcote Boulevard, Haymarket

Dr. John Williams Changing Cancer Care for the Better

STORY AND PHOTO BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

T

here aren’t many of us who haven’t been affected by a cancer diagnosis, whether it’s us or someone we love. Even celebrities aren’t immune. Taylor Swift writes about her mother’s cancer journey in her new song “You’ll Get Better Soon.” “The buttons of my coat were tangled in my hair in doctor’s office lighting I didn’t tell you I was scared.” Hearing that dreaded diagnosis can leave someone reeling, without knowing where to begin or what the best choices are for treatment. The right doctor can make all the difference. Because of his unique philosophy about cancer care, for women diagnosed in our area, that person may very well be Dr. John Williams. “Why are we not - in the healthcare and medical field - teaching our patients what they need to know to make better decisions about their own care?” says Dr. Williams, a third generation physician who has worked in our community for over 20 years. This is a concept Dr. Williams realized was missing years ago, and he’s made it his life’s goal to fill that gap.

36

{ OCTOBER 2019 |

A surgeon at heart, Dr Williams explained his true mission this way: “Something I love more than cutting… sitting across the table from my patients helping them make crucial health decisions for their unique situation.” During the course of his career beginning in general surgery, he gravitated towards breast surgery while caring for breast cancer patients who made a lasting impression on him both personally and professionally. It was while treating these patients that he began to realize the need for educating them to make better decisions and guide their own care.

“It’s about helping people help themselves,” he says, explaining that it’s important that patients be well-informed and deeply involved in both the process and decisions about their care. “It is their right to make their own choices,” he explains, and even if he doesn’t agree with those choices, it is ultimately not up to him. Self-proclaimed ‘too empathetic’ for each of his patients’ personal conditions, he has no regrets about the bonds he has built with those he has come into contact with. It was these connections with his patients that led him to where he is today. A person sitting across from this distinguished man with twinkly eyes and a boyish smile may have no idea just how many accolades and achievements Dr. Williams has received over the course of his career, many of them just recently. Among the list is Founder of the NovantUVA Breast Center, a leader in the field of cancer care. He is also the creator of the Breast Cancer School for Patients, and a new appointee to the President’s Cancer Panel. When you specialize in breast cancer care, people flock to you for advice. Dr. Williams says family and friends would feel empowered, after a quick phone conversation with him, to ask their own doctors what they needed to know. This further cemented his conviction that the medical world doesn’t actually teach patients how to get the best quality care in their own communities. “This is a missing link in our collective efforts to provide better quality breast cancer care in the United States,” he says. He was determined to change that… and he did. In 2018, the Breast Cancer School for Patients was launched online and the response was instantaneous. In the first eight weeks, analytics of the site revealed that visitors were actively engaged in its content, with watch times of more than five minutes per view and 150,000 views. When a person is first diagnosed with breast cancer, he or she often goes straight to Google for more information, but this

information is scattered and hard to narrow down. In contrast, the Breast Cancer School for Patients uses a video format to explain each topic in layman’s terms. “What I say in these videos is exactly what I would say to my patients if they were sitting across from me,” Dr. Williams explains. He wanted the nonprofit site to translate the information in a way that everyone and anyone can understand. In two- to ten-minute video lessons, the school not only gives patients the tools they need, but also provides printable lesson notes and specific questions to ask their doctors about 50 cancer-related topics. There are also courses on each stage of treatment designed to guide patients through each decision they will have to make in the order they will have to make them, from biopsy to surgery, chemotherapy to radiation, hormone therapy and post-treatment care.

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

But the goal of creating this school for patients was not only for the field of breast cancer care. Dr. Williams hopes that medical professionals will consider using this concept in other fields - diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and more - so that patients with any diagnosis can feel educated and empowered no matter the situation. It was more than difficult to narrow down such a large concept - “his life’s work” - he says, but it is possible. “I am selling a concept,” he says, “better cancer care for everyone.” “When you do the right thing, it sometimes results in being rewarded in ways you never thought possible.” he says. He was invited to give a TEDx Tysons talk where he shared for three minutes his thoughts about why online schools for patients will revolutionize patient education. Although his idea wasn’t chosen to move on to the next round, he was asked to participate in the fall as a speaker trainer for the next TEDx Tysons event. Then in August, Dr. Williams received the official notice from the White House of his appointment as Chair of the President’s Cancer Panel, one of only two appointed advisory boards at the National Institutes of Health. “Cancer is a nonpartisan issue,” he says, and he feels privileged to be the voice for cancer patients and use this avenue to influence and make recommendations for improving outcomes for patients in our nation. “I spend too much time with my patients; I practice the way I want to; and I feel lucky to have this passion for cancer care,” says Dr. Williams. He credits his wife Christa and his family for always supporting him in his endeavors to make medicine and cancer care better for everyone. With a daughter in college and his son in middle school, it will be interesting to see what kind of changes they make in our world, after having been inspired by a lifetime of watching their dad make a difference. YOGA AND CANCER: helping to make those affected feel better

e all strive to live a more active, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle. This desire applies to us whether we are currently healthy or recovering from an illness such as cancer. Sadly, treatments for many illnesses are as toxic to the body as the illness itself. Yet yoga has been shown to support our goals for a healthy lifestyle and to help reduce the symptoms and side effects of cancer, including pain, fatigue, sleep problems and depression. There are many styles and forms of yoga practice: restorative yoga, hot yoga, vinyasa yoga, gentle yoga, yin yoga, and ashtanga yoga to name just a few. Different styles of yoga have multiple benefits. Choosing the style that will be beneficial to your needs depends upon your circumstances.

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Before beginning any form of exercise or health plan, it is important to speak with your doctor to confirm your readiness to do so. Engaging in a hot yoga class offers many benefits that may lead to a more active, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle. According to a recent report on Healthline.com, some of these benefits include improved flexibility, the ability to burn more calories, stronger bone density, improved cardiovascular health, and reduction in blood glucose levels. Hot yoga also helps reduce stress and depression. Many of the benefits described above also apply if you are undergoing treatment for cancer. Once your oncologist gives you the go ahead to try yoga, speak with your instructor to find the style of yoga that will best support your mind, body, and spirit. Yoga integrates the whole body for optimum health. A report from the National Institute of Health states that yoga, when used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment, may be helpful in relieving some symptoms linked to cancer. Recent studies of women who had breast cancer revealed that doing yoga helped improve their quality of life. Furthermore, it may also relieve symptoms of migraine headaches, asthma, diabetes, drug addiction, high blood pressure, and heart disease. For individuals battling cancer, yoga does more than build strength and improve flexibility. It addresses toxicities resulting from cancer and its treatment protocol. Such toxicities include anxiety, distress, mood swings, insomnia, fatigue, and muscular pain. Yoga may even help with memory. If you are receiving medical care for cancer, or any other illness, you should consider which style of yoga will best enhance your healing process. Hot yoga, which is briefly mentioned above, may or may not be the best style. Instead another form of yoga, such as restorative yoga, yin yoga, or gentle yoga, may be more appropriate while you are undergoing treatment. Again, you should consult with your doctor and you should seek a yoga studio that offers guidance and solid instruction. Your yoga studio can provide the encouragement and environment to enhance the healing process. Additionally, you should speak with your instructor about your concerns and needs. The instructor should be trained in the style of yoga you are seeking and should engage frequently in continuing education.â?–

For a fresh, authentic meal try Maaza 29 BY HANNAH SAMLALL

T

ucked away in a shopping center off of Rte. 29 in Gainesville is a hidden gem by the name of Maaza 29. From the outside looking in, it’s hard to imagine the atmosphere that you’ll find upon entering this establishment. “We seek to celebrate our cuisine in an upscale, sensual ambiance,” says owner Emanuel Reta. “Maaza 29 is where to come if you’re looking to enjoy handcrafted cocktails and classics with a twist.” What makes Maaza 29 unique, you ask? The list is never-ending. Reta, who is of Ethiopian and Italian descent, studied at culinary school in France. Bringing French techniques and Ethiopian spices to put a twist on traditional Italian dishes culminates in what can only be described as truly authentic cuisine. You can expect that consistently whenever you stop in, whether it be for a Chili Mango cocktail, Confit-style “fall off the bone” chicken wings, or Lamb Lollipops (a fan favorite). Part of that consistency comes from a staff of regulars. Don’t expect to see

new faces there every time you visit. Most of the staff at Maaza 29 have been working here for years. What else won’t you see? A microwave and a freezer, for starters. At Maaza 29 everything is prepared fresh. “We take our dedication to fresh even as far as our cocktails,” Reta says. “All of the sweetness you taste in our handmade cocktails is due to natural sugars from the fruits and other ingredients that are added.” You won’t see the same menu time and time again when visiting Maaza 29, either. The restaurant updates its selections seasonally in order to introduce customers to new flavors sourced from ingredients that are true to each season. “In the fall, people are looking for a heartier meal,” Reta says. “We want our menu to reflect the seasons so that we’re also able to source local, fresh ingredients whenever possible.” In addition to cocktails and authentic cuisine, Maaza 29 also offers an extensive and always evolving wine list. “I travel to Napa Valley twice a year to handpick wines that will pair best with our menu items,” Reta says. In fact, if you’re a fan of Scout’s Honor from Venge Vineyards, you’ll find it only at Maaza 29. And if you’re a wine lover in general, check out Maaza 29’s wine club and its variety of impressive perks. Maaza 29 hosts frequent events, such as wine and scotch tastings, and often has live music on Friday nights in addition to a unique “Beat the Clock”happy hour Monday through Thursday from 4:30 - 7:30pm. And when the staff at Maaza 29 isn’t serving up fresh, authentic cuisine, you can find them out and about in the community, participating in different events. In May, they tackled the Tough Mudder obstacle course together. “Maaza 29 is where I want people to be able to come and have a good time,” Reta said. “Our atmosphere is fancy, not formal. Come hang out and have some cocktails, come for a date night, or even bring your kids!” As you can imagine, there’s no

frozen chicken tenders for the kiddos on the menu. “I wouldn’t serve it to your kids if I wouldn’t feed it to my kids,” Reta said. “You can expect the same freshness on the kid's menu that you’ll see throughout the rest of the menu.” If you’re sensing a trend here, it’s not by accident. Fresh and authentic are the words Maaza 29 lives by. Stop in and taste it for yourself. ❖ Maaza 29, 14630 Lee Hwy., Gainesville / 703-753-2177 / Maaza29.com

Nature Lovers Mike and Leslie Larson bring Wild Birds to Gainesville BY FRANNIE BARNES | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

W

ild Birds Unlimited is a franchise of stores whose mission is to “bring people and nature together.” The stores offer a variety of bird food, feeders, houses and baths and they are dedicated to helping turn your yard into a bird habitat that benefits the environment but also brings wild birds and, in turn, songs, color and joy to your home. And we are lucky enough to now have our very own Wild Birds at Madison Crescent in Gainesville. Owners Mike and Leslie Larson know a thing or two about birds. They’ve always been outdoorsy types, both love riding horses and hiking, and Michael’s passion for photography created the perfect partnership of spending time observing and capturing nature. This love of the outdoors led them to research how to bring local nature into their own backyard. Over the past handful of years they’ve transformed their home into a National Wildlife Federation certified property that is full of exclusively native plants which means the flora on their property are beneficial to our ecosystem. Local plants attract local birds and animals. This natural evolution led Michael to become interested in Wild Birds Unlimited. They haven’t always been entrepreneurs. Michael spent his career in IT supporting various government agencies. He always enjoyed coming home and marveling at the beauty in his backyard and after enjoying that part of his day most, he realized it was time for a change. “You always hear people say, ‘do what you love’ and I realized it was time. When I found Wild Birds Unlimited I thought, this can’t be real,” he said. He researched the company and was amazed at the support and education they

Did You Know?

SEED BIRDS WILL ACTUALLY EAT

Many bird seed mixes found at chain stores only contain about 27% of seed that birds will actually eat! The other 73% are filler seeds that birds will kick to the ground to get to the good stuff.

FILLER SEED

Birds need more than just food to survive, they also need fresh water. Many homeowners shy away from bird feeders because of misconceptions about attracting mosquitoes. Simple solutions like a water wiggler or bubbler solve that problem. Add a bird bath with a wiggler near your bird feeder, sit back and when the word gets out – watch away! Birds need to be fed all year long. Spring and summer are their nesting season and they need calcium to grow and feed their babies. Don’t forget to fill your feeders in the fall and winter. Birds provide natural pest control. In addition to bird food, they eat insects – who needs pesticides? Bird houses should be at least 10 feet away from trees or shrubs (and not on fence posts!) and Michael recommends a predator guard be used as well.

provided and knew it was the right fit. More than just a store that sells bird seed and squirrel-proof feeders, Michael feels what makes Wild Birds Unlimited unique is that people come in because they want to, not just because they need to. Customers love to tell stories of the birds in their yards, share photos and discuss ways to invite more feathered friends to visit. Many bird watchers will agree that the hobby brings a sense of peace and joy into your life, which Michael and Leslie found to be a win-win situation. Michael always loved spotting birds, but since he was introduced to the franchise, he’s gone full speed ahead learning everything he can about every type of bird. If he doesn’t know, he researches. He has found that in this business, education is key. Whatever is happening in your yard, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, there are solutions to invite (or politely say vamoose to) local animals. Some examples include offering bear proof feeders, or advanced pole systems, called baffles, both of which keep local critters out of bird feeders. And local is the key word. As mentioned previously, Michael and Leslie worked hard to have their yard certified by the National Wildlife Federation. They started with a visit from Audobon.org who helped educate them and then, through their research, they learned that many of the beautiful shrubs and plants that are commonly planted in our area are not conducive to our local fauna. Take nandina for example. While it is a beautiful shrub, the berries are toxic to cedar

wax wings, which are native to Virginia. Replacing the non-native plants with those that are attracts fauna and pollinators (such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds), plus visitors of all types that you didn’t even know existed. Learning about our ecosystem “really opened my eyes about the impact of native plants and how they do or don’t support birds,” Michael said. Wild Birds Unlimited will offer educational classes twice a month and Michael plans on hosting guest speakers from the Virginia Plant Society and other organizations. Children will also have a chance to learn about birds and native plants. He plans to partner with the Clifton Nature Institute and the Warrenton-based Pollywog Kids program. After all his research, you’d expect Michael to have a favorite bird, and he does. The Eastern Bluebird is his favorite. The male has a bright blue color with a striking orange chest. These birds are easy to provide a nest for, in case you want to attract one to your yard. And they are savvy house hunters, too! The male will look for a new home, but it’s the female who ultimately chooses it. When she finds the home she wants, she leaves a deposit of a pine straw in it, to let the male know. Hmm. Except for the deposit of pine straw, it seems female humans have a whole lot in common with female Eastern Bluebirds! More than just a local store, Wild Birds Unlimited is a valuable resource to our community. ❖

Instead, she continued to finetune her writing skills while she majored in business. She has always felt inspired to write, but it wasn’t until late 2017 when she began her first book. Her inspiration came from a place you might not expect… her son’s kindergarten classroom. Carylee is the mother of a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. When her older son started kindergarten, it was his first time attending a public school. It was a larger, more diverse classroom than he had experienced prior to attending kindergarten. One day, “he was playing some friends and was told by one of them that he should be playing with children who are more of his complexion,” Carylee said.

“My husband and I hadn’t had the race discussion yet,” Carylee said. “My family is mixed, so that’s not a topic that really came up. My son came home and said why can’t everyone just be the same so we can all play together?” While Carylee could have taken this to heart and been angry, she decided instead to use it as a teaching opportunity. “I told him, everyone can play together. We don’t need to all be the same, we just need to know that we have good hearts. I wanted to try to instill in him to be friends with everyone, no matter what.”

“I WANT TO CREATE A KINDER FUTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN”

That night, Carylee went to sleep having no idea that when she woke up the next morning she’d suddenly be an author – with a majority of the book she had no idea she was about to write already finished. “I woke up in the middle of the night and I could not go back to sleep. I grabbed my cell phone and was typing away and two hours later, I had ninety-percent of the book done,” Carylee said. The topic? Not race. Everyone, Just Like Me is about a boy who has to get glasses. “Joshua feels sad. He must wear glasses, and he feels different than the other kids. He's the only one in his class with glasses. He thinks everyone will laugh at him. That night, Joshua finds a bright star and offers his wish. He wishes that everyone would be just like him. But when he gets to school the next day, things get a little crazy. He discovers there may be a problem with his request... A picture book for children, Everyone, Just Like Me, encourages kids to embrace their uniqueness. Through Joshua's special wish, readers learn that individual differences are what makes each person special.” After sending the book out to friends and family and receiving feedback, the response was an overwhelming “yes.” After researching

publishers, Carylee wasn’t sure how to move forward. “I know sometimes you can send your work in and it may sit on the shelves for years,” she said. “This is something I really wanted to get out, so I ended up researching self-publishing. That’s when I found Archway Publishing, the self-publishing arm of Simon & Schuster.” The decision was made. Since publishing Everyone, Just Like Me in 2018, Carylee has gone on to speak at several local schools and events. “I have the flexibility to travel to schools in the area to talk to students about embracing differences and being kind to each other,” Carylee said. “If people want to teach their children about embracing and respecting the differences of others and respecting the identities of themselves as well, this book will help them with that.” Carylee’s mission? “I want to create a kinder future for our children,” she said. “We’ve seen things get a little shaky in the past few years, and having a 4-yearold and a 7-year-old, I want things to be better. I believe that, in giving children the information to be better now, it is going to help to create a better future for all of us.” What can you expect next from Carylee? Not only does she have another book coming out, titled Pretty Hair, but Read With Carylee, a video podcast streamed at Jirani Coffee House in Old Town Manassas, begins airing November 9 through JiraniTV, YouTube and Carylee’s website at readwithcarylee.com. “I will be inviting authors from the area to come and read their books,” she said. “I’ll have a Q&A with them to try to promote the little-known authors in the area and also get them out there so that students and teachers will know them.” This “accidental author,” as Carylee refers to herself, doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. In the coming years, she hopes to continue to publish books with the mission of creating a kinder future for children everywhere.❖ For more about Carylee Carrington’s books and new podcast, follow her on Facebook at @ carywrites and visit caryleecarrington.com and readwithcarylee.com.

GUNS AND HOSES CHARITY HOCKEY GAME SCORES $1,350 IN DONATIONS Local police officers and firefighters took to the ice for the third annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game July 13 at the Prince William Ice Center. The police team won 9-8, and the event brought in over $1,350 that will be divided between two charities. The fire department team played for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which provides resources to assist the families of fallen firefighters and works within the fire service community to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries. Donations can be made directly to NFFF at https://www.firehero.org. The police department team played for Law Enforcement United Team Prince William. School’s back in session and Crossroads-Connection is back in action

Another school year has begun and Crossroads-Connection is once again providing food to local school children in Haymarket and Gainesville to curtail weekend hunger. Last year, 100 children participated from nine schools, and the non-profit anticipates even more to participate this year. Committed to alleviating hunger as an obstruction to classroom learning and sustained by a faithful and growing community of donors and volunteers, Crossroads-Connection operates as a chartered club of Heritage Hunt and a ministry of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church of Haymarket. To get involved as a volunteer or to make a donation, please visit crossroads-connection.org.

Balls Ford Road widening to decrease I-66 traffic? We’ll take it!

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors has approved the final design to widen 1.2 miles of Balls Ford Road from Doane Drive to Ashton Avenue. The project will widen the road to four lanes and will have a divided median, a sidewalk, and a shared use path. A signal will be added at the intersection of Notes Drive and Century Park Drive, and the existing signal at Ashton Avenue will be modified for the project. The goal of all this? To improve access to I-66, decrease traffic, and improve safety. Next steps: This fall, the county will begin acquiring right of way. Utility relocation is projected to begin in the spring of 2020 and the county is set to advertise for construction in the fall of that year. If all goes well, the project will be completed by fall 2022.
