Kwon’s Champion School

7605 Linton Hall Rd., Gainesville | P: 703-753-8231 │| E: kwonsgainesville@gmail.com | W: kwonschampionschool.com | FB: @KwonsChampionSchoolGainesville Master Eric Kwon, front and center, and the team at Kwon’s Champion School.

“I don’t see myself as an entrepreneur or a businessman. I truly love teaching martial arts and helping individuals become a better version of themselves. I don’t see my students as my clients. They are like my own family and I wish only the best for them. I also have an amazing staff that I believe feel the same way. I think this is why people openly and readily vote for us.” MASTER ERIC KWON

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT KWON’S CHAMPION SCHOOL. We are a martial arts school that not only provides the highest quality of instruction for both children and adults, but implements character building throughout our lessons as well. From combination martial arts instruction and intensive kickboxing lessons, both in-person and virtual, to year-long programs, we strive to ensure that students of all ages become their best selves. In addition, we have created a summer camp and a new afterschool program. Called the Kwon's Distance Learning (KDL) Program, it ensures our students continue their lessons virtually, and eases some of the stressors faced by parents. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? Yes and no. We have won the previous two years with the support of our amazing students and families! But with COVID-19, our industry was hit hard – including our school. We have had a very difficult time since the pandemic started and have had to reinvent our school from the ground up. Currently, we are working very hard to sustain our school and are developing new and exciting things along the way. This award is truly a blessing and has given us a boost of motivation to continue hustling during this time.

{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |

WHY DO YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN THE HAYMARKET AND GAINESVILLE AREAS, AND HOW LONG HAS KWON’S CHAMPION SCHOOL BEEN LOCATED HERE? We are the first martial arts school to open in the Gainesville/Haymarket area and this year we have been open for 21 years! The individuals within this community are not only wholehearted families but are friendly and genuine individuals that we have gotten the privilege to meet over the years. You just can't go wrong in this area.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT KWON’S, ANY FUTURE PLANS, OR ACTIVITIES YOU’RE HOSTING RIGHT NOW? With the health and safety of our students and staff as our first priority, we not only ensure a clean and safe environment but a virtual option for a majority of our programs as well. For families unsure of virtual training, we provide a Virtual Martial Arts Trial to all newcomers, consisting of two free classes! We want to make sure each of our students feel valued and cared for from the very beginning. On top of caring for our students, we strive to help the community in any way we can. Our new Kwon’s Distance Learning Program is designed to support as many families as possible during these difficult times. Above all, our goal is to continue enhancing our students’ social and emotional skills, along with greater confidence and discipline.

Royce Home Transformations, Nokesville

P: 571-437-5346 │| E: royceht@gmail.com FB: @RoyceHomeTransformations

TELL US A BIT ABOUT ROYCE HOME TRANSFORMATIONS. Royce Home Transformations is a small local business owned by me, Dan Royce. I'm a licensed residential remodeling and repair contractor. The majority of our projects involve kitchen, bath, and basement remodels, however we also do trim and door installation and repair, flooring installation, drywall installation and repair, interior and exterior painting, and many other handyman tasks from hanging pictures to changing out hardware and fixtures. I also work regularly alongside local designers to help my clients bring their visions to reality if they need some extra help in the design department. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? This is my second year winning Best Contractor and Handyman. While I have more than fifteen years of experience in the field, Royce Home Transformations is a relatively new company, not yet four years old. When I started RHT, I wanted to be the contractor that over delivered so that my clients would return for future projects. Now, not only do I have many repeat clients, I also almost exclusively receive new clients from word-of-mouth recommendations. Seeing the pride my clients have in their completed projects and having them share their excitement with their friends and family has been very rewarding. So while it was very surprising to win again, I feel honored because it means my clients are happy, and to me that’s so very important.

18

{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |

“It was very surprising to win again and I feel honored because it means my clients are happy, and to me that’s so very important.” DAN ROYCE

WHY DO YOU THINK READERS LOVE ROYCE HOME TRANSFORMATIONS ENOUGH TO KEEP VOTING IT BEST OF? I think that in the process of working in someone’s house, especially now that so many people are working from home, clients really get to know me. They know that I am very honest and that I work hard to make sure they are happy. I think that my clients appreciate these traits and want to see my business do well. WHY DO YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN THE HAYMARKET AND GAINESVILLE AREAS? I’ve lived in Northern Virginia my entire life and in the Haymarket/Gainesville area the past nine years. I love this area, it really has been the perfect place to raise a family, and I knew that when I started RHT that I wanted to primarily work in this area if possible.

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Luckily the people of Haymarket and Gainesville have enabled me to stay busy enough that I don’t have to do many projects outside of these communities. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT ROYCE HOME TRANSFORMATIONS? As a small local remodeling business, I’m the one the client communicates with from the time they request a quote through project completion. I do a majority of the work myself, and manage any subcontractors that are necessary for the job. So when a client hires me, they are hiring me and my expertise for the entirety of the project. I think this sets me apart from many of the larger firms, and it’s what my clients say they appreciate about my company.

for the community’s support. We truly never expected our business to receive the recognition it has in recent years. WHY DO YOU THINK READERS LOVE THE SPOTTED LEOPARD ENOUGH TO KEEP VOTING IT BEST OF? We love updating our followers on all the exciting new projects we work on every week through our social media platforms. It helps us feel connected to them and gives us an opportunity to interact with everyone! I think in doing so our followers feel the same way, as it gives them a chance to see the development and process of our work as if they’re part of the crew themselves! A lot of effort and attention to detail is involved in our work, and I think that really shines through in our social media. WHY DO YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN THE GAINESVILLE AND HAYMARKET AREA AND HOW LONG HAS THE SPOTTED LEOPARD BEEN LOCATED HERE? Our family has lived in this area for nearly 20 years now. This is where my husband and I raised our children, met lifelong friends, and experienced some of our most favorite memories. It was only fitting I start my dream job in the same location! Our business has been located here for an entire decade now.

Our business actively supports the Haymarket Food Pantry and its efforts to supply much-needed meals to those in need, as well as a local senior dog sanctuary called Gray Face Acres that is also here in Haymarket. In addition, we consistently provide a 10% discount to all emergency first responders and active military/veterans; we owe them our gratitude for granting us security and safety during these turbulent times.

Transform Power Yoga

15111 Washington St., Haymarket P: 703-753-2977 │ | E: transformpyoga@gmail.com W: transformpyoga.com│ | FB: @TPY20169

PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT TRANSFORM POWER YOGA. We are a yoga studio that primarily teaches Power Vinyasa yoga. We also offer other practice disciplines: Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Kids’ Yoga, and Ashtanga Yoga. The Vinyasa Yoga classes are heated to 95 degrees (however not now while in COVID-19 prevention). We offer 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, and also host yoga workshops. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? Although we have been named best yoga studio for the past two years, we were very surprised to win this year. No matter how many times you win an award, you can’t assume that you will win again. We are always humbled by this acknowledgement and always work to earn our members favor and respect. Also, every year other gyms, yoga studios and physical fitness businesses open in our area, so we are also grateful for having won in the category of best fitness center, which normally goes to the bigger gyms. Our family believes in a verse that states, “…do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Although this is in reference to charitable work, we believe it is a standard to live by. For three years we have not actively campaigned to our members for their vote, although we did mention that it was occurring and encouraged them to vote for their favorite local businesses. We want our acknowledgement to be organic. We don’t want to ask for support for just our business. This is why winning is truly a humbling experience for us. WHY DO YOU THINK READERS LOVE TRANSFORM POWER YOGA ENOUGH TO KEEP VOTING IT BEST OF? We opened our doors six years ago committed to being a place of non-judgement for anyone who walked through our door. We also want people to feel that they are part of a larger family when they walk into our studio. We remain diligent to these commitments. Transform Power Yoga was established to be a place of acceptance and peace. Our lobby, in pre-pandemic days, was a gathering place for discussions over coffee or tea, and friendships were formed. Now the challenge is to keep that community atmosphere through our online classes, in-studio

classes, and workshops. I believe that those commitments are the reason we have been chosen three years in a row. Our instructors are incredible. We are in awe of their dedication to offering challenging, thoughtful, high quality classes. In addition, they all continue their yoga education in order to bring even greater value to the classroom (and virtual classroom). WHY DO YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN THE GAINESVILLE AND HAYMARKET AREA? Haymarket is a unique, friendly town. Every business located here is special and contributes to the energy and vitality that keeps a small town feel to our thriving community. This area is also unique because of our proximity to D.C. The fast paced nature of our area creates a need for businesses that lower stress levels. Our delicious restaurants, unique shops, social gathering spots like wineries, breweries, coffee houses and cupcake shops, as well as our strong health and wellness businesses make this an exciting place to work and to raise our families. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT TRANSFORM POWER YOGA, ANY FUTURE PLANS, OR ACTIVITIES YOU’RE SUPPORTING IN THE COMMUNITY? We will be a center for yoga education, with two yoga practice rooms, and will offer an even greater variety of yoga disciplines to meet the needs of a wider range of people. Smiling Through the Pandemic: and daily updates on the ongoing impact of COVID-19, burying your head and mouth in the sand is not the answer. Viral particles migrate easily to the lungs through the nose and mouth. Wearing a mask will promote the reduction of these particles health experts state, and can protect your mouth from invasion. Your mouth is a part of your body and you must never forget this fact. Your mouth is like I-66—it is a wide highway that leads to other places in the body. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT NOW TO SEE YOUR DENTIST

3 Steps to COVID-Proof Your Mouth BY DR. TONTRA LOWE

U

nless you have been in a deep sleep for the last seven months, you know that the world has changed due to the COVID-19 virus. Did you know that according to published statistics over 18 million people have contracted the virus with over 600,000 deaths word-wide according to Johns Hopkins University? Research has shown that most deaths are among people with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. All of these medical conditions also have a love-hate relationship with your mouth. Never fret though! Using three simple tips can keep you smiling through the pandemic while keeping your teeth and gums healthy. LISTEN TO THE HEALTH EXPERTS

It is hard to make informed decisions about your oral health without adequate information. With tons of stats

With office closures for emergency treatment only from March-May for dental offices in Virginia, there is a huge backlog of patients that did not have their normal hygiene cleaning appointments, and those who were scheduled for traditional treatment. Additionally, lots of staff at dental offices did not return due to child-care issues, medical conditions, taking care of other family members, or other personal reasons. It will take months to catch up with patient care. It is paramount that you reschedule your appointments now and keep your appointment. Bleeding gums and gingivitis before have now turned into incurable gum disease. Small cavities are now large cavities and require crowns and cause pain. Call your dental office today and make your appointment even if it is weeks away. MAXIMIZE YOUR BENEFITS

Employers may modify future benefits due to the costs surrounding staying open at this time. You must maximize any benefits you have now. Since some people may see the dentist for their regular cleanings only once this year due to COVID-19 closings, call your insurance carrier and request to have all of your benefits restored. Ask them to waive the time limit clause in light of the pandemic. You can also reach out to your HR representative to assist. Regular professional cleanings, exams, and x-rays can help keep your teeth shiny and your gums healthy to help COVID-proof your mouth. MAKOplasty

The Future of Knee and Hip Replacements

“My orthopedic surgeon warned me that with my active lifestyle, I’d likely need a knee replacement by age 60,” said LeBleu. “When I began experiencing a lot of pain as I walked, I knew it was time to see a specialist.” Kim X-rayed LeBleu’s knee and determined that the deterioration of cartilage and torn tissue warranted a total knee replacement. “Dr. Kim walked me through the options for robotic and non-robotic surgeries, and I did a lot of research,” said LeBleu. “Technology has come a long way and I felt comfortable with Dr. Kim’s approach, so I decided to go the Mako route.”

few decades ago, the concept of performing surgeries with robots was little more than that: an idea. Fast forward to today, and robotic-assisted surgeries have become both commonplace and frequently preferred. MAKOplasty (Mako), for example, is a type of robotic surgery used in orthopedic procedures like knee or hip replacements. The robotic arm used in Mako utilizes 3D CT scans to place implants. This leads to smaller incisions than traditional joint-replacement surgery. “The goal is to fix the problem with the least amount of surgery,” said John J. Kim, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Novant Health UVA Health System. “Traditional surgery techniques often take longer and have higher likelihood of complications. Mako allows us to precisely perform total knee replacements in about ninety-minutes. It’s a great option for active individuals who are experiencing chronic pain from years of use.”

MEET CHARLES LEBLEU

One such individual is Charles LeBleu. The 59-yearold former commercial electrician suffered a tear to his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his latetwenties. While the ACL tear was successfully repaired with surgery, Charles was an avid athlete and years of playing sports eventually took their toll on his knee.

Surgeries like Mako allow the surgeon to use the robotic arm as a tool to make precise cuts to the joint with less dissection of soft tissues. This leads to less pain and improved range of motion in a replaced joint. “The robotic arm allows a heightened degree of accuracy,” said Kim. “This precision, combined with the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, can pose significant benefits to patients as they recover.” Those benefits include faster return to normal daily activities, shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring and lower risk of infection, blood loss and transfusions.

BACK TO NORMAL

Recovery times and recommendations vary by individual, but for LeBleu, the return to normal life took little more than a few days after his Mako procedure in December 2019. “There was a noticeable difference in my pain level almost immediately. Within three days I was walking without a cane, and I was able to do squats in Dr. Kim’s office at my two-week post-op appointment,” said LeBleu. “Before surgery, I worried every time I mounted my bicycle. Now, I’ve had to get used to not worrying quite so much,” he added. Although LeBleu was fortunate to be back to activity soon after surgery, he was careful not to rush his recovery. “A critical part of recovery from any surgery is having patience and following instructions,” said Kim. “With joint replacements in particular, we stress the importance of regaining a full range of motion before starting to rebuild muscle. If a patient rushes that process, they run the risk of injury.” Mako offers an innovative, state-of-the-art and more precise alternative to traditional joint replacements. Prince William Medical Center is the first hospital in Virginia to receive a gold seal of approval for hip and knee replacements from The Joint Commission, and now proudly offers Mako as an option for local knee and hip replacement candidates. ❖

Back to School with Special Needs

BY BETH LUNA

W

hile we most likely agree that every student is challenged in one way or another as we head into the 2020-21 school year, special education students face additional hurdles. Generally speaking, many special needs students require one-on-one assistance or small group learning to be successful in school, and they do better with multisensory methods of teaching. Because of this, many area parents were left hoping for at least some in-person learning for their kids come the new school year. While Prince William County Schools (PWCS) will open with an

32

all-virtual model for at least the first quarter, the system will be offering four day per week in-person services to special education students :Michelle Roper, with the input of their Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA. individual education Director, Office of plan (IEP) teams. Special Education, “The biggest Prince William challenge is that not County Schools every student is able to engage fully in the virtual format,” said Michelle Roper, Director, Office of Special Education for PWCS. “We will continue to be as creative as possible in these instances. We are all in for getting through this time together and ensuring that our families of students with disabilities know that we are here for them now and moving forward.” PWCS is currently working on IEPs for special needs students through virtual team meetings with parents, the goal being that everything will be processed by the start of school. At press time, information was not available on whether students would be at their current school with their known teachers. While many families are relieved, there are some questions. “Virtual learning with a familiar teacher versus in-person with someone unknown can be a tough choice to consider,” said one parent. “That is why all these decisions need to be made individually with the involvement of parents and teachers alike.” Another mother, while happy about the decision, was worried about sending her child back to a near-empty school, having them walk down quiet hallways past empty classrooms. The pivot to unplanned home learning last spring had some benefits to parents but was generally challenging. “Distance learning started great, reviewing the materials my son had learned,” said a parent with a rising fifth grader at J. W. Alvey in Haymarket. “Being a working mom, it was a great opportunity to enjoy being together and to observe his daily routine. We kept the same schedule, and lots of great resources were shared by parents and teachers. However, supplies ran low and were hard to find, and trying to work full time and teach full time was exhausting. My son needs one-on-one instruction or a small group, someone to sit next to him and remind him to focus.” Another parent, who works for PWCS and also has a rising fifth grader at J. W. Alvey had hoped for some in-person teaching for hands-on learning and behavioral support.

“One positive is that my daughter became more independent when working on a touch screen computer, but she still requires an adult sitting with her to stay on task.” she said. “Some weeks, I was so busy with work myself that I didn't have time to work with her, nor did my husband who works full time, so we supplemented by having a neighbor do lessons with her.” “Routines are something that benefit students and adults alike, and in many cases families were able to adjust to the new format, hard as it was,” Roper added. “We have learned a great deal about what works with our students that we can use in the future. We found that providing engaging activities and tools worked best, so we will increase our capacity to provide those to our students that need them.” All of the parents we spoke with benefited from seeing the day-to-day work that the teachers and their children undertake, which helps everyone moving forward, even to in-person school time. “I have always known that consistency, repetition and putting things to music are keys to her success,” said one parent, “but being her 'teacher' solidified how true that really is. And, when I watched videos where curriculum materials were put to music, I was amazed at the things she knew!” For kids with special learning styles and needs, the social interaction at school, even with its ups and downs, is irreplaceable. Another parent, who also has a rising fourth grader at J. W. Alvey, commented on how the lack of social interaction during at-home learning was hard on her son. “The situation was very challenging; the teachers were amazing but the social interaction and life skills they develop at school are key,” she said. “My daughter has tons of peers to turn to, but my son has a harder time finding playmates that really get him.” Parents praised the PWCS teachers and staff for their hard work with the students during athome time, as challenging as it was for everyone involved. “From senior administrators to teacher aides - their hearts were truly in their virtual jobs,” said one parent. “My son’s teachers went above and beyond to not only provide instruction, but also to provide the love and support our kids need!” In one way or another, all of our kids will be back at school in September. While it may look different, PWCS plans to offer the students with varied learning needs the same toolbox as before the pandemic, which is good news to these families. ❖

THE VIEW IS WORTH THE CLIMB AT

VERTICAL ROCK BY HANNAH SAMLALL

I

f you’ve ever driven down Route 28 in Nokesville, you may have noticed a large, but unassuming building sitting back a bit from the road. From the outside, you’d have no idea that this building houses a massive rock climbing gym and fitness center. For over ten years, Ian and Lindsay Colton have shared their passion for rock climbing with the community, while at the same time working to create an environment that is welcoming to those of all ages, backgrounds, and skill sets. “We started [the gym] based on our passion for climbing,” Ian said. “We came across this building and thought what an awesome, untapped market. The building is 50 feet high, open, and it made for the perfect place for an indoor climbing gym.” Vertical Rock offers a wide variety of programming, including indoor climbing lessons, yoga classes, krav maga, outdoor climbing instruction and expeditions, and more. “We offer all sorts of programs from beginner to expert, as well as all ages,” Ian said. “We can get anybody climbing depending on where they want to go with it. We’ve watched kids grow up through our programs and become part of the family we have here. We love that it’s a fun, family activity that’s fitness-oriented at the same time.” It’s also great that those of us in less than perfect shape can try it. “People might feel they have to be at a certain physical level to start. The truth is that there’s the ability to progress here. If you’re interested in trying, we encourage you to try,” Ian said. “There’s a

34

{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |

grade system that’s implemented so you can climb easier routes and progress to the more difficult climbs. We encourage you to start where you’re comfortable and push to where you feel you can’t go any further. Next time, try a little harder or get a little higher up on the climb. As you get into the sport, you’ll realize you have the ability to control the amount of endurance you put into it.” Their prime location also allows them the unique opportunity to offer outdoor climbing in scenic areas like Talking Headwall and Buzzard Rocks which are within an hour radius of the gym. The Coltons are particularly passionate about sharing outdoor climbing experiences with the Vertical Rock community. That is, after all, where their true love of climbing lies. “We have permits and our guides are licensed to take people to these places with amazing climbing views,” Ian said. “We love when people come to climb indoors as a family, but if the kids want to get outside, we can make that happen. It doesn’t matter where you are skill-wise, we can handle it.” You can think of the Vertical Rock community as multi-faceted fitness. “We offer many of the same services as a big gym, but a lot of people want something different in their workout routines,” Ian said. In addition to being a fitness center, Ian and Lindsay

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

pride themselves on having created a family at Vertical Rock. “People make lifelong friends here. We’ve had people meet their significant others, and even get married here.” When they talk about a tight-knit and passionate community of rock climbers, they mean it. Even their staff is composed of rock climbers. This aspect was especially important to the Coltons as they worked to create this positive and upbeat community. “People that come to work with us have a true passion for rock climbing. We don’t care if they’re the best rock climber out there,” Ian said. “We can teach that, but we care that they care about what they’re doing. They’re not just punching the clock; they want to be a member of the community and part of the team.” At the end of the day, Lindsay and Ian see this as so much more than a rock climbing gym and fitness center. They see it as a place where you can walk in and immediately feel lifted up by the positivity in the room. “The by-product of being here is improved mental health,” Ian said. “I’ve watched as so many people transform their physical health, that they also feel better mentally.” With 50-foot indoor ceilings and endless outdoor opportunities, the sky really is the limit at Vertical Rock. Taking Junk to a New Level Junkluggers and Remix Market turn trash into treasure BY AMANDA M. SOCCI

S

erving the community since January 2019, The Junkluggers of Gainesville offers junk removal as an eco friendly service to help customers clear homes, basements, garages, and offices of unwanted items and clutter that can overwhelm people both physically and mentally. Their easily recognizable large, neon green trucks are a familiar sight on the roads of northern Virginia. What separates Junkluggers from other junk removal services? With Junkluggers, the clutter is not just on a one way trip to the landfill. With the goal of reducing the volume of junk that ends up in our landfills, everything they pick up is evaluated for repair, recycle, donation, or upcycling opportunities before being deemed actual trash. Mark Harrington from Haymarket opened his franchise after specializing in business development in information technology for 20 years. “I grew bored. I took time off to investigate different business models, never intending to go into the junk business. It was recession-proof … we are a country of excess,” explained Harrington on why junk removal was the best business to get into. Impressed with all aspects of Connecticutbased The Junkluggers and particularly moved by its commitment to charitable causes, Harrington selected Mikey’s Way Foundation and Inova Children’s Hospital as the two main nonprofits to benefit from Junkluggers’ work in this community. Picking up junk is an easy job that is priced on the volume of the pickup. Not as easy is figuring out what happens to the junk once Junkluggers picks up. Harrington has several options and engages in higher-order thinking with his staff to come up with the best disposal solution. Should they donate the junk to a deserving community partner who can breathe new life into unwanted goods? Should they responsibly recycle items at state-commissioned environment

transfer stations when the useful life of junk has dried up? The answer depends on a lot of factors, including whether an item is broken, damaged or has missing parts, to name a few. With his main goal for Junkluggers to send the least amount of junk to the landfills by recycling and donating most items, Harrington began adding a third component to his junk disposal process earlier this year. He started dipping his entrepreneurial spirit in the art of upcycling and turning garbage-

bound items into beautiful and functional décor. Now, anything Junkluggers picks up may be donated, recycled, or potentially deconstructed and rebuilt into exciting new furnishings for home and office spaces. Using the same analytical skills in determining the fate of junk picked up by Junkluggers, Harrington expanded his business with a retail store to sell upcycled items as the next logical step in the junk removal business. In April 2020, just as the nationwide pandemic began forcing business

Below: The featured artist for the month of July, Julie Abrell, demonstrates oyster decoupage techniques to a group of children who registered to take a creative workshop at Remix. Right: Owner Mark Harrington shows off some of the materials his staff uses to do upcycling magic in an area closed off to the public. Remix has many in-progress upcycled projects in the queue.

closures and causing people to stay home, Harrington quietly opened sister company, the Remix Market of Warrenton, to sell many of the unique castoffs picked up by his Junkluggers staff. “We took an empty shell and wanted a rustic vibe … we wanted a fun and eclectic place that people wanted to come to,” beamed Harrington in describing the process of renovating a large empty warehouse space and converting it into a barn-like 5,000 square-foot visual display of refurbished furniture pieces and new creations made from junk. Eclectic indeed. As you walk into The Remix Market on the far left of the store is the charming vinyl room, an enclosed space containing vinyl records, just some of many unusual items picked up by Junkluggers. The wide-open space features a hodgepodge of large junk and upcycled pieces treated with fresh paint and new ideas. The tables, curio cabinets, chairs, and other furniture are angled carefully, allowing narrow paths for customers to browse, touch, and admire the craftsmanship and creativity used to embellish the junk. To the far right is a small open space dedicated to the workshops. The back of the store is closed to the public, allowing Remix staff ample space to work their upcycling magic.

38

{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |

Surprisingly, the relationship-focused Harrington who had trained himself to favor people over things became a DIYer, literally getting his hands dirty as he taught himself to use power tools, cut, disassemble, and construct new things out of old junk. With no background in design or previous experience working with art, Harrington became an excellent chief of staff responsible for making upcycling the focal point of Remix. However, Harrington is quick to give credit to others before himself. He hired Meghan O’Toole to manage Remix and frequently depends on her artistic eye to gauge which items should be upcycled and to what degree. Harrington also believes strongly in community involvement, ensuring that everything he does with Junkluggers and Remix benefits his local community in some way. For example, Remix hires local artists to share their talents

by offering workshops. Each month, a different featured artist teaches children and adults how to upcycle items by adding new, colorful elements to things that would be normally thrown away. Harrington feels proud to receive great feedback from the community about the work he is doing with Junkluggers. “People are receptive. They accumulate stuff over time. They feel refreshed [to get junk out of their homes]. Their stuff is treated the right way,” he noted. Now with the Remix Market open to the public, Harrington is even more excited about the future of junk. He has lofty goals to continue his mission to reduce landfill waste by increasing the quantity of things to upcycle and sell. And he’s not stopping there. With the goal of benefiting the community always in mind, his next big project is to build planter beds in the back of Remix, hire a master gardener to help plant crops, and donate the yield to local food pantries after harvest. What will he imagine next? ❖

A R I S ING B LACK VOICE: Meet Graelin C. Kimbrough, The Community Discussion Leader BY AMANDA M. SOCCI PHOTO BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

O

n May 25, police in Minnesota arrested and killed George Floyd, an unarmed Black man; this caused nationwide riots and jump started the Black Lives Matter movement. A Black man from Gainesville responded by establishing himself as a community discussion leader. Enter Graelin C. Kimbrough, a former police officer, father of three, and community activist who wants to create meaningful change by welcoming open and honest dialogue. On June 3, while the nation was bleeding with its open wound of racial division, Kimbrough quietly posted in the

Western Prince William Chatter Facebook group: “… many people have honest questions about … the Black experience. Too many people talk about us, not enough people talk to us… I am willing to give you the answers I have … Send me a message in my DM and I will respond here.” Just three days later, Kimbrough closed the chapter on his law enforcement career. By posting publicly on Facebook, Kimbrough pledged to help his local community in Gainesville by soothing the racial conflicts and encouraging questions in a safe, judgment-free forum. His initiative would soon lead him to be a guest panelist in race-based community discussions as he freely made himself available as a sounding board and moderator de facto of discussions about Black people. Born in San Diego, California into a military family, Kimbrough moved a lot in his youth, racking up some difficult life experiences among the gang culture in San Diego and college life as a single father in Detroit, Michigan. His parents divorced when he was 16, leading him to fend for himself. In 2006, Kimbrough moved to Virginia to work as a police officer for the state and later, in federal law enforcement, but after nearly ten years, he chose to leave the police force because “it has taken a lot out of my health,” noting that the BLM movement was a series of coincidences and that his mounting health problems most significantly contributed to him leaving his job. He experienced “structural problems in society with

race and discrimination” on the job and in his personal life, stating they were more than he could handle. On top of that, he felt his education was never enough to get him ahead. Closely bonded to his mother, Kimbrough accepted “mom pushing me to higher levels of education” and believing he “always had to do more to get promotions.” “Knowing I had to do more work than coworkers was very difficult. I had to show better metrics in performance to get equal treatment,” explained Kimbrough matter-of-factly. He also explained the difficulties of being a supervisor, having a team of Black officers to manage, and seeing his team underperform. Although he was “blessed to handle that, there was a lack of institutional support.” The words a senior officer had told him years before rang true: “I was too black to be blue, therefore, I was purple.” Kimbrough has lived through a lot: starting his adult journey at the ripe age of 16, experiencing his parents divorcing, moving and acclimating to dangerous cities, raising a child on his own, trying to improve his life through advanced education and a respectable career in law enforcement while dealing with internal problems and racism. Now married and a father of three, Kimbrough never let his life challenges define him. He used past difficulties to breathe new life into thoughtful conversation with his community. “Erudite conversations have been important to me for the last seven to eight years,” he noted, and after the George Floyd incident, “I saw all this angry fighting as misguided. People were trying to get at something.” Not prompted by anyone except his own conscience and a desire to effect a sort of peace and calmness that was sorely needed, Kimbrough posted a simple message on Facebook hoping people would ask open questions about the Black experience. He accepted questions privately and “reserved judgment and provided information with context and nuance.” “You just need to listen. People want to be heard.” Kimbrough learned those lessons in law enforcement and applied them with a modern context to what he perceived was confusion and unanswered questions about Black people. The community in the Facebook group supported Kimbrough and responded favorably to his open communications and peacemaking mission. Kimbrough is now a program administrator for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and will surely fulfill his duties with the same compassion and care he has exercised his entire life. Despite his success as a community discussion leader, Kimbrough is quick to humble himself as just “a contributing member of society” ready to do “community work” without pretentious labels. A sign of a great leader. ❖

A

ny fellow military brat can relate to the constant moving from place to place. With every new place comes a new routine, new friends, and new relationships. Samantha Spittle is one of those who can relate to the lifestyle. “Every place I moved I was creating relationships and connections,” Spittle said. “I always felt like people were put into my life who had a lot of wisdom to share, and I was eager to learn from their life experiences.” After moving around and constantly making new connections, it only made sense that Samantha would find herself in a profession with relationship building at its core. For almost 20 years, Spittle worked as a representative for Mary Kay. “I would go and have these amazing coffees, meetings, and lunches,” Spittle said. “I’d gather all of this insight and then go share it with my friends. I joked that I wished that I could record the conversations and share them.” Samantha stayed home for several years after having her two children. When she decided it was time to go back to work, “I told my friend, Amelia, that I had an idea for writing a book in which I’d revisit the different people I’ve met throughout my life,” Spittle said. “Everyone would be a different chapter. Under her suggestion, I ended up doing a Be the Change class, a 12-week course for women who want to start their own business. I called it my creative energy bubbling ground. During a break of one of the classes, I told a couple of stories including the one that’s become my signature story.” In 2012, Samantha had what we’ll call “the accident.” She vowed to never tell anyone about the day she pooped her pants and to take the secret to her grave. Well, that lasted for about four hours. “After sharing my story with my husband and a few friends, they all started telling me their stories and I felt like it was such a great example of how people hold onto things out of shame and make them much bigger than they really are,” Spittle said. Once she had shared the story and was past the shame business, an idea started to

form. She started appearing on podcasts as a guest and continued to get more comfortable with storytelling. “Cammie Fuller at Old Town Open Book did story slams, so I started doing those and realized it was exactly what I was looking for,” Samantha said. “Standup didn’t feel like the best fit, but this was the perfect hybrid.” All of her background experience, combined with her signature story, eventually culminated into Flushing It Out, the podcast she launched in the summer of 2019. “I was listening to Conan O’Brien’s podcast on a road trip and I thought, ‘Oh wow, he sits around and talks to people and other people can listen in’ and it just came to me,” Spittle said. “I felt like a podcast was the next right step that would lend itself to whatever I wanted to do after, writing a book, speaking, hosting things with people; whatever it may be, I feel like I’m meant to connect people.” That’s exactly what Flushing It Out is meant to do. “One of my goals is to help people to feel seen,” Spittle said. “Because I moved around so much, I can say with confidence that we all experience the same feelings, the same emotions, and we all want to feel seen.” Samantha’s mission is to help people feel connected, safe, and to find the right people to be open and vulnerable with. She believes that every person we meet has wisdom to offer and that by sharing stories, we will all feel more connected to the people around us. Don’t expect every podcast episode to be as lighthearted as Samantha’s signature story; frequently she and her guests address far weightier topics and situations that people go through. “By opening up to people, you give people the opportunity to encourage you and influence you, “ Samantha said. “Shame grows in the dark. I’ve had people tell me they’ve been carrying around things so long. When we walk in the light it’s a healthier place to be.” You can listen to Flushing It Out with Samantha Spittle on flushingitout.com, Spotify, and Apple Music. You can also follow the podcast on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. New episodes air weekly. ❖

College Planning Today The world is changing. Should your education plans change with it?

BY GARY CARROLL

W

hy do you want to go to college? This is the first question that College Planning Specialist and Coach Luanne Lee asks potential college applicants when she first meets them at her office. Surprisingly, she often sees blank expressions and hears only silence or vague answers, even though the response to that question sets the stage for all other aspects of the college preparation process. Answering that question is the first step along a challenging and complicated road. Speaking honestly, many students would admit the social aspects of what used to be “college life” and the chance to be independent and away from home make college attractive. But in today’s Covid pandemic environment, socializing, sports, dorm life, even use of bathrooms and showers will have severe restrictions. Most universities will offer only limited classroom instruction, and distance learning—sometimes from home—will dominate. This changes the whole college experience, and may change the way students, parents, and potential employers, think about it. Rather than a life experience, it becomes strictly an academic activity. If the student already has a career in mind that requires a degree, of course, move ahead with the application process. But if a student does not have a specific goal in mind, it is prudent to

44

{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |

slow down and think a bit more. When parents or students seek Luanne’s assistance, she begins the process by testing students to determine what career to pursue. She uses a combination of three assessments for career, personality, and communication to help a student identify strengths in careers for which they are well suited. Luanne then helps parents to connect with the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the education/ training required. In many cases, attending college may not be the best choice. Luanne says that changes in the job market indicate that employers in many professions no longer see college as an essential prerequisite to hiring. In fact, in some cases colleges might even sidetrack students away from preparing to do the job for which they are best suited. Luanne notes that it appears the job market is starting to turn, as there seems to be a growing interest in job seekers pursuing trades. She encourages students with an aptitude for trade work to investigate careers that don’t require a college education but rather can be learned through apprenticeships, job shadowing, and technical training. Early school classroom closures in the spring have complicated the college application process. Many students were unable to take SATs and colleges have minimized or eliminated its role in the selection process, often substituting

}

FairTest.org. Normal support from students’ secondary schools, securing recommendations and proper application material, has been complicated as well. The two most important things potential applicants need to realize are that college today is big business and college is not for everyone. There is intense competition from both American and foreign students for the most prestigious schools. Even outstanding academic students may be disappointed to learn that their first college choice may not accept them. Universities today may not necessarily look for the most well-rounded student, but rather for those that will fill a niche that will make the entering class as a whole more diverse— meeting diversity criteria and foreign student goals, meeting athletic needs, as well as finding the very best academic students, etc. Moreover, the cost of college has dramatically increased in recent years. Students and their families could easily find themselves using savings or loans well above $100,000 to pay for four years of undergraduate studies, even at schools with relatively modest price tags. Students can apply for a federal student aid loan (FAFSA) in their own name, in which case the parent has no financial responsibility at all. FAFSA currently will provide $5,500 to a freshman, $6,500 for sophomores, and $7,500 for juniors and seniors. In addition, many private charitable organizations also award scholarships based on merit and financial need. Students from families who have an annual income of less than $24,000 are eligible for a Pell Grant of over $6,000— the only free federal money available. Luanne notes that students with financial needs should not rule out looking at schools outside of the state which may offer scholarships for their desired area of study. In many cases, it makes good financial sense for students to spend their first two years of undergraduate study at nearby community colleges (be sure to check that the credits earned there will transfer to the college of choice), rather than spend so much for a four-year college away from home. What Students and Parents Can Do Now: • Research trends in the potential job market • Research possible professions to determine their requirements • Decide whether college is right for the student • Develop a financial plan on how to pay for college or technical training ❖ LUANNE LEE YCPCOACH.COM • LUANNE@YCPCOACH.COM 70 MAIN STREET, #23, WARRENTON TO LEARN MORE ABOUT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AID, CONTACT FINANCIALAIDTOOLKIT.ED.GOV/TK

Excuse-free early voting is here - and there!

The 34th edition of the WVBC will take place on Saturday, October 10 at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Post time is 7 p.m. This spectacular annual event has awarded purses of more than $28 million since its establishment in 1987. Carol Holden, president of the West Virginia Breeders, recalled the process of launching this racing venture 34 years ago. “We discussed opening the races to all West Virginia bred and sired horses, along with a group called “raisers”, which were horses brought into the state as weanlings and stabled there for one year,” she said. “Even including those three groups, we only had 154 horses nominated to the first year of the Classics in 1987. As president, Carol has demonstrated how women in racing play a significant role in the sport of Thoroughbred racing. Through the years, 26 women are credited with victories as trainers. This includes Susan Cooney, who trained Leva Mae in the 22nd running of the $125,000 West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic in 2008. For more information on the races: www.wvbc.com

Before the coronavirus disrupted the athletic landscape, Matt Binkowski planned on graduating from Battlefield High School in December and enrolling in the college of his choice the following month. The senior linebacker is still committed to that plan even though now it means his high school football career is over. Battlefield linebacker On July 15, Virginia High School Matt Binkowski. League executive director Billy Haun presented three models for the return of high school sports this upcoming school year. None of the models included football competing in the fall. “It’s definitely hard knowing you’ve played your last game even though you didn’t know it was your last game,” Binkowski said. But he's ready to move on and prepare for the next level as soon as possible. "I'm excited to get to [JMU]," Binkowski said. Although Binkowski had 25 offers, including offers from such schools as Air Force, Army, Elon, Furman, Harvard, Liberty, Navy, Old Dominion, Richmond, Temple, Towson and William & Mary, the one he wanted most was from JMU. Binkowski said he liked JMU’s proximity to his home, the program’s winning tradition and the defensive coaching staff.
