e’re combined, but we’re standing. This special, combo issue of Haymarket and Gainesville Lifestyle magazines is brought to you courtesy of the Coronavirus. COVID-19 is doing its best to take down everything in its path: local businesses, bustling neighborhoods, our economy and our lives. But, thanks to the advertisers that grace these pages, the tremendous efforts of our advertising sales staff, our contributors, and the entire Lifestyle team, we are able to continue bringing you the community news you love and need now more than ever. It may all be in one magazine, but that’s so much better than no magazine! So take a break from the doom and gloom. Curl up with your coffee or tea and meet Nicole Naples, founder of The Girl Link, an organization committed to helping moms and daughters better communicate. Don’t miss the chance to meet Dallas Ostergaard, too. The 87-year-old cashier at the Target in Gainesville is beloved by coworkers and customers alike, and has a life story that will leave you smiling. Yes, we address the Coronavirus here as well, but in our own way. Check out our special section called Coping with Covid. In it you’ll find the Coronavirus Survival Guide. It’s filled with things to do, watch, explore, and learn while we’re all on lockdown. And when you’re ready to refresh your tea (or coffee), move on to Afternoon Tea in Turbulent Times. I hope you find it as uplifting as we do.

From left to right: Christopher, Maria, Daniel, Donovan, and Dominic

Still the Boss: Amissville’s Maria McWhirt helps those with special needs live more independently

STORY AND PHOTO BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

W

hen Maria McWhirt’s son was graduating from high school, she thought she might lose her job. The ability to leave Dominic, who was diagnosed with autism at age 10, unattended at home was nearly impossible. Even with 25 years of experience as a trained social worker, McWhirt could not find services for her own kid once he transitioned out of special education supports available during the school years. Surprisingly, the solution came from within her own family. Out of McWhirt’s five sons from a blended family, Dominic is the only one with autism but her other son Daniel was born with vision impairment. At five-months old he was given experimental glasses and quickly began using technology, including mastering the use of a mouse before he could walk. At the age of 12, he was developing apps, including one he created to help Dominic remember the steps to playing minecraft. While Daniel was attending college, Dominic was graduating from high school, soon to be at home, needing someone there at all times to prompt him to complete tasks,

communicate, eat, and think. Maria called upon Daniel to create an app to prompt Dominic throughout each step of his day. Not only would this help give Dominic some independence, but it would take the conflict out of Maria and Domnic’s relationship by allowing Dominic to receive prompts from a device that he was more receptive to than his mother’s well-intentioned ‘nagging.’ “Dom responded to prompting from me with meltdowns, but responded positively to Daniel's app,” Maria said. The app takes Dominic through his day, leading him to brush his teeth, empty the trash, take his medicine, decide what he wants for lunch (it even helps him make it step by step). Once each step is completed, a report is sent to Maria so she knows he’s up and going about his day. Little did the family realize that in a few short years, this app would be helping other special needs parents and young adults far and wide. When McWhirt began to show others in the field, the clinicians loved it. She knew that her son wasn’t the only one who could benefit from this technology. McWhirt is the Founding Executive Director of MPower Me’s MyGuide, a technology-based intervention delivering custom interactive guides to a mobile device, such as a tablet or cell phone to empower people with special needs. This technology is the first and only electronic-based support covered by Virginia Medicaid. To obtain that coverage, the following three conditions must be present in the user: 1. He or she possesses a cognitive deficit;

2. He or she is prompt dependent; and 3. There are barriers to his or her ability to express thoughts, feelings, and activities. When these three conditions are certified by a clinician, Medicaid provides MyGuide on a device at no cost to the family. McWhirt knew MyGuide could not be a one-size-fits-all solution, since each person with a cognitive deficit is unique. Thus, the app is designed to be completely customized; special education teachers, parents, neighbors, mentors, coaches, and students can be trained to write and build new lessons. Technological Prompting, Enhanced Self Expression, and Remote Monitoring: three ways MyGuide supports users.

Technological Prompting

A glimpse at the MPower Me YouTube channel shows the MyGuide app in action. In one demonstration a young woman builds a lesson to combat her anxiety by showing a photo of something that calms her down. In another, we see a user putting his clothes away and moving on to the next task with a huge smile on his face. McWhirt tells of a younger child who has a dismissal lesson that pops up every day at 2:15. It features his mom’s voice calmly telling him to get on the bus and that she will see him soon. The mom can record a new greeting every day, if she’d like.

Enhanced Self Expression

According to McWhirt, clinicians and families have reported that the responses collected via the MyGuide app are more

My brain works differently than some people. MyGuide lessons are built the way my brain thinks. MyGuide helps me be more independent by allowing me to make choices and reminds me of what to do if I ever get stuck on something. When I first wake up, I turn on my MyGuide. I use morning routines and I take my medicine. On each page, there is a set of instructions that can be customized that will help me complete whatever task it is and when I am finished with that step, I swipe to the left and then it gives me a new step. And when I complete the task, it sends reports to MyGuide and my mom. It allows me to tell mom that I’m doing my stuff. I used to have mom annoy me. With MyGuide, she doesn’t have to ask me and she doesn’t have to drag me everywhere she goes. -

accurate than verbal responses to a trusted caregiver. By using this technology, people with special needs are able to communicate their choices, emotions, and opinions in more detail, regardless of their communication capabilities. There are a variety of ways a user can express how they feel, what they think, or what they’re doing at any given moment and in response to a situation, from selecting a photo to dictating a long story.

Remote Monitoring

Clinicians, caregivers, and especially families find that the live reporting feature is one of MyGuide’s most valuable tools. MyGuide collects data about each page the user views and how they respond to pre-programmed

D O M I N I C

M C W H I R T

questions. From a dashboard, caregivers and family members can view this data in real time or access reporting logs of previously completed guides. Clinicians analyze the reports and make treatment adjustments, while families use it to supervise the user. If you ask users though, MyGuide’s biggest benefit is the ability to be in control of their own world and gain independence. It shows them that “they are the boss of their own lives,” says McWhirt. And that’s not all. At the high school level, where neurotypical kids and special needs kids are using technology together, it is creating a sense of empathy and inclusion. MPower Me is truly a family company. Three of McWhirt’s sons work in different

ways to get the message into the community and increase awareness of the MyGuide app and how technology can help special needs kids and adults in general. In addition to Daniel who continues to develop cuttingedge software, Christopher brings his 10 years of experience as a group home manager to the effort, and Donovan hosts presentations and workshops where people can try MyGuide and ask questions. “I'm so proud of all of them,” McWhirt says. Clinicians are encouraged to reach out to MPower Me regarding MyGuide and families are encouraged to inquire about possible funding opportunities. GETTING REAL WITH GAINESVILLE’S

NICOLE NAPLES:

TACKLING TOUGH TOPICS FOR TEEN GIRLS & THEIR MOMS BY KRISTINE MELDRUM DENHOLM

N

icole Naples of Gainesville has always coached people how to get strong and fit. After studying kinesiology at Penn State and training athletes there, she’s taught exercise classes and has worked as a personal trainer in the area for the past two decades. An expert navigator of Wegmans produce aisle, the staunch nutrition advocate makes healthy, balanced meals for her family. She preaches the gospel of good clean eating to clients: lean protein, fruits and vegetables. Her advice is all, well, what you’d expect from a fitness and nutrition expert. Until the infamous brownie Incident with her daughter—livestreamed to hundreds of friends—and friends of friends. That’s

12

when things got real. Yet her own embarrassing moment turned into her game-changer--and Gainesville’s gain. “You didn’t see it?” she laughs. “It was horrifying.” She shakes her head, her eyes lit as she shares the story. She’d been building a brand offering nutrition and fitness coaching online, steadily gaining followers. She was live-streaming health and nutrition tips from her Lake Manassas kitchen, like how to fix healthy recipes, often with her daughter Gianna, now 13. With her jovial, energetic way, mother and daughter (with cameos by high-school-sweetheartturned husband Paul, and son Anthony, now 15, and dog Gino, 3, a maltichon) epitomized eating right. They were the faces of health. Then one day someone asked her daughter on a Facebook Live: “What’s your favorite after school snack?” Nicole wondered which of her healthy snacks she made she’d pick. “A box of brownies,” Gianna answered, as the rosy glow drained from her mom’s face. It wasn’t something she allowed in the home. Stunned, she watched her girl march to the dining room where she’d hid a stash of contraband: the processed, preservativeladen brownies we all may or may not enjoy.* Her daughter then ate them on-air. Nicole laughs: “It was a brilliant hiding spot; who goes to the dining room after Christmas?”

LEFT: Nicole Naples addresses attendees at the first Courage Conference. 75 moms and daughters attended the event dedicated to breaking down communication barriers between them. BELOW: Shelly Young, founder of Family Rx-Recovery for Families, Gianna Naples, and Nicole Naples at Girl Link’s first Courage Conference in 2019.

It went viral, viewed over 2500 times. And when Gianna became recognized as “the brownie girl” in Dick’s Sporting Goods, Naples realized what people were craving, even from a health coach: real. She began to think differently about her business. “People crave real-life parenting scenarios. People want to look in and see there’s chaos in other houses too. They’re looking for real.” “People responded,” she says. “When you admit your failing, it encourages someone else to do the same. It’s like author Brene Brown says, ‘this is how we help each other.’” Meanwhile, she was struggling with some difficult relationships, and she and her daughter were struggling to communicate. “I wanted a change in my life,” she recalls of a crossroad. “I wanted to be a mom who listened more, a person who communicated more, a wife who loved more, a friend who is there more. I could do better.” The motivator of others needed motivation; the inspiring person needed inspiration. She looked at her [late] mom’s picture and asked for a sign. Shortly thereafter, seeing the Rachel Hollis documentary, “Made for More,” gave her one. “I didn’t know how to help Gianna and me, but I said to my daughter, ‘We gotta do something bigger.’ More.’” The duo put out a Facebook call for other moms and daughters to meet at a cafe in January 2019. To their surprise, 45 mothers and daughters, ranging from middle to high school, showed up, half of whom they didn’t know. Talking about “The Fab 5,” the people you surround yourself with, she asked the group: “What are your qualifications for your friends? Who do you want to be? Then we turned it around: would someone pick us as their Fab 5?” As the group grew, and was kicked out of its meeting location for lack of space, Nicole retooled the idea, changing its name from Girl Code to Girl Link. The difference in this support group? It’s for both moms and daughters, what she saw as the missing link. In August 2019, Naples organized a “Courage Conference” at Evolution in Gainesville. Complete with workbooks and dinner, 75 people listened to guest speakers talking about peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, and creating an “X Plan.” “We’re just trying to break down communication barriers between moms and daughters,” she says. Turns out, bridging this gap between moms and girls isn’t a unique need to Gainesville. She’s gotten calls from as far as California. Hundreds have joined her free group online, and

she also leads a membership-only group ( $29.99/month) where experts talk tough topics. A human trafficking expert spoke, a trooper led a cybersafety talk about “the 6 clicks” of information people can find on you, and a domestic violence counselor spoke on teen dating violence and setting boundaries. A gynecologist will soon speak on breast self-exams. “How many times have you tried to bring up an uncomfortable topic and your daughter rolls her eyes, says, ‘Mom I don’t want to hear this!’ and bolts to her room? What if we can take the pressure off you, yet you’re there? The topics are discussed live, but it’s also recorded so you can watch the subject anytime with your daughter. It becomes ‘let’s see what the expert says’ and opens up that door for discussion together.” What do mothers most want for their daughters? Confidence, she says. “That can’t be given by everyone wearing t-shirts; you can’t bottle it and drink it. It’s won by educating people, sharing resources, strategies, moms telling their life stories, other girls like Gianna sharing what they’re going through.” Though she hopes to plan weekend retreats, right now Naples admits she’s challenged by developing the business, technology, and “keeping in front of the need,” but it’s been fulfilling. “We as parents always wait until there’s a problem, whether it be health, school, bullying, and then we find a solution. Why not arm our girls before?” ❖ *Hypothetically, should one run into Nicole in Wegman’s produce aisle, and should your cart hold said brownies, cookies, bread and cheese, writer suggests ducking into organic aisle next aisle over. Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home. Until you start getting antsy, of course, and feeling like every day is Groundhog Day*. To help you stave off the “antsies,” we asked our contributors, all of whom are local to the Fauquier and Prince William areas, for their ideas on things to do, watch, explore, and learn while we’re all on lockdown. They’ve come up with a great list with ideas that will appeal to adults and children alike, and we hope it helps the days pass happily for all of you. *Great movie, by the way. Fun for the whole family!

Afternoon Tea in Turbulent Times BY STELLA VERADUCCIA

A

h, tea – that simple, soothing infusion that calms our nerves and restores our spirits. And it’s not only the beverage, but the whole experience. For many of us, there is nothing better than a perfectly brewed tea, with some delectable sweet and savory treats, enjoyed with good friends in a relaxing social environment. Just give us dainty finger sandwiches, elegant pastries, warm scones with clotted cream, and a proper cuppa, and all is right with the world. Except, right now, it isn’t…. We are in the midst of a serious global public-health crisis, which will likely get worse before it gets better, and at the moment we in the U.S. are under-prepared. If you have any doubt about this, see the compelling article by Tomas Pueyo on Medium.com entitled “Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now” – it is a data-driven analysis of the viral spread and strategies to address it, the upshot of which is that our best hope for mitigation now depends on social distancing.

22

{ APRIL 2020 |

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

Businesses and governments at the federal, state and local levels have been scrambling to safeguard communities by discouraging or banning large social gatherings. In addition to the suspension of school terms, religious services, community activities, and sports and entertainment events, we’re finding that grocery shelves are bare and restaurants are closing. These are uncharted waters for all of us, and every day brings new revelations and guidelines. People are becoming more and more isolated, nervous and fearful … people need tea! But how can you possibly experience a soothing Afternoon Tea in these turbulent times? The three essential elements of a successful Afternoon Tea – indeed, of any enjoyable dining experience -- are good food, delightful company, and a pleasant ambiance. Good food is easy. Many eateries are now offering more menu items on a take-away basis; just be sure to call ahead to order, and confirm a time for pick-up. If you enjoy baking and food

“tea is balm for the soul, and that there is comfort in certain rituals that remind us of pleasant times in happier circumstances.” preparation at home, make a few of your favorite specialties or try your hand at something new. If you’re not that good in the kitchen and don’t want to order out, no problem – you do know how to make a sandwich, right? Just trim off the crusts and cut it into triangles, add a nice store-bought pastry and a hot cup of good tea, and Bob’s your uncle!** Delightful company even when sheltering in place is also possible. Set up a “virtual” tea date with one or more friends by agreeing on a certain day and time. Share menu suggestions and recipes, as well as the titles of books you are reading, your latest Netflix obsession, family photos, or whatever else you’d like to talk about. Prepare and plate your Afternoon Tea at home (see “Ambiance” below), and then connect at the appointed time via conference call, Skype, FaceTime, or other video-chat platform. Pinkies up! Very few of us think of the term “ambiance” when referring to our own homes, but perhaps we should, especially when everything outside our homes seems to be approaching an apocalyptic dystopia. Your home-based Afternoon Tea should be a tranquil respite from the rest of your day, especially if you have restless kids home from school, a teleworking significantother, or – horrors – both. Unless they are your actual tea partners, ask the other people in your home to leave you alone for an hour or so when you’re ready to sit down. That’s right, sit down: Afternoon Tea is not accomplished by standing at the kitchen sink with a mug of lukewarm something in one hand and an uncut sandwich in the other. Use your best china for once, set a pretty little table-for-one, and arrange the food attractively on a tray while you brew the tea. Sit down, breathe

deeply, give thanks for all you have, and tuck in. We do not know exactly what the next few months have in store for us, but we do know that they will be unsettling and perhaps chaotic, and we will need to do everything we can to keep calm and stay healthy. We also know that tea is balm for the soul, and that there is comfort in certain rituals that remind us of pleasant times in happier circumstances. So go ahead, have a nice cuppa, and take good care. ❖ ** If you are not familiar with this delightful British phrase, “Bob’s your uncle” means something like a combination of you’re all set, easy-peasy, and voila! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Stella Veraduccia is the pen-name of a popular writer who lives in Haymarket. In other lives, she has been an English teacher, nonprofit executive, tea-room proprietress, and founder of a fictitious organization called The International Sisterhood of Eccentric Aunties.

DESIGN 101:

tips, tricks, and

LESSONS LEARNED Not by age, but by experience is wisdom acquired, or so goes the saying. In our experience, the lessons that stick best are often the most costly. Below are a collection of lessons we’ve learned in the last 18 years in the industry. May they prevent you from learning the hard way. BY YARON LINETT

local expert THE EXPERT:

Yaron Linett

HIS EXPERTISE:

Interior Design

Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Northern Virginia. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.

Flooring is a big subject and there are many things to consider when making a decision, but no matter what you choose remember: if the subfloor is in poor condition you are going to have problems. It may be an unexpected expense, but when your installer wants to fix the subfloor you would be wise to listen. Above grade, below grade, light or dark, shiny or matte, wood or tile, no matter what you choose, an appropriate slip coefficient is always a top consideration. Safety first. PRO TIP

Aside from never doing your own electrical work (let someone whose insurance will cover it be liable), there are a world of things

26

{ APRIL 2020 |

to avoid when having new electrical work done. Were you aware that not all switches work with all bulbs? Congrats, you may have just saved hours of frustration wondering if you purchased a pack of dead bulbs. Put dimmers everywhere you might want light at night. Getting a face full of full intensity bulb during a late night bathroom trip is no fun. PRO TIP

Plumbing, like electrical work, is not something you should be doing yourself. When your water heater fails, (and they all will eventually), spring for the larger unit. Nobody ever said “We just have too much hot water.” The cost for

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

an extra ten gallons of capacity is negligible compared to the joy of not running out. Tankless water heaters have their place, but if it can’t handle the draw or initial temperature, you are pretty much out of luck. PRO TIP

Functional window treatments should “stack back” off the window to expose as much glass as possible. Preservation of view and transmission of light during the day are priorities. The easiest calculation for proper rod width is to add one third to the size of the window. Remember window treatments are not just for light control; a significant portion

of energy loss often happens at the windows. Adding an extra deep hem containing four to six inches of fabric will help ease the transition should you wish to take your custom window treatments to the next house. PRO TIP

The cost of upgrading to actual upholstery weight fabric is miniscule compared to the cost to reupholster furniture a second time. Stretch, seam slippage, pilling, dye-transfer, upcharges, and a whole host of other problems can easily be avoided by choosing an appropriate fabric. Choose an appropriate fabric. Trust us, this is not something you want to redo in a year. ❖ PRO TIP

FAMILIAR faces

“Smile and say ‘selfie!’” From left, contributor Tricia Driscoll, Dallas Ostergaard, and Dedra, in the photo that’s practically gone viral.

DALLAS OSTERGAARD Born in Nebraska, this Army Veteran is the Gainesville Target’s Most Beloved Cashier PHOTOS AND STORY BY TRICIA DRISCOLL

A

ny day now, 87-year-old Dallas Ostergaard of Gainesville is going to go viral. Since having his photo shared on several popular online forums, Dallas has been the subject of much talk and even more admiration over the last month. As it turns out, he’s well-known in Prince William County as the cheery Target cashier who makes fascinating banter with customers. Need proof? Read on. Here’s a snippet of conversation I caught between Dallas and a customer named Dedra. (I swear I wasn’t eavesdropping; I was simply standing behind her in line and couldn’t help but overhear!) Dedra, reading Dallas’ name tag: My name starts with D, too. Dallas, smiling: My parents gave nine of us names that start with D. Dedra, incredulous: Nine of you?

Dallas, nodding: Yes, but just us nine. My other five siblings have names that don’t start with D. Dedra, her eyes wide, turning to look at me and then back at Dallas: You’re one of 14 children? Once this story was shared on social media new stories emerged from people who had: sold Dallas a car, worked with him, gone through his cashier line, and grown up with him! Born in Nebraska in 1932, Dallas is the third of the aforementioned 14 children: nine boys and five girls. When he was 18, he saw an article in Time magazine about the value of Gregg Shorthand, so he learned the skill. He then went to Washington as a stenographer where he was drafted into the Army and sent to Korea. There, Dallas was assigned to assist a 3-star general near the DMZ. Not long after, he joined the Department of State and his long foreign service career began.

As a regional director, Dallas’ duties took him to Beirut, Yemen, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, and Jordan. He recounts brilliant stories of peace, and uprising, and his love of the different cultures and cuisines. When you sit with him, you’ll learn what it was like to dine with a Bedouin Tribe, narrowly miss the tumultuous overthrow of a King, and be present in the Middle East during the Six- Day War. Ultimately, Dallas transferred to Latin America and met his wife in Colombia. He went on to serve in Bolivia, retired, and did contract work in Costa Rica for 12 years. All told, Dallas has spent nearly 68 years in the workforce. 23 of those have been with Target. He credits his love of people and humor as the reason for his positive attitude. “I once saw a customer who lost her husband to cancer and it brought tears to my eyes. I hugged her. I had a lady in my line who was short on money, and the lady next in line paid for her, and let her keep the change. I saw a customer on her way out who really wanted a book, and a lady told me, ‘Dallas, ring that book up!’ and she ran after the stranger to give her the book.” Dallas continued, “We see so much on television of violence and hatred and terrible disunity, but then you see something like that….it restores my faith in humanity.” Now, Dallas has four children and 14 grandchildren who adore their beloved “Pampa.” Dallas is full of surprises, and he makes our community a better place. The next time you visit the Target store in Gainesville, look for him! ❖

Said Krissi Smith, manager of the Target in Gainesville,

HGBA MEMBER MEET & GREET

Russell Parker LEGALSHIELD & IDSHIELD, INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATE R U S S E L L PA R K E R @ L E G A L S H I E L D A S S O C I AT E . C O M | R U S S E L L PA R K E R . W E A R E L E G A L S H I E L D . C O M | 5 4 0 - 2 7 2 - 0 5 5 4

When and why did you decide to join this company?

How has the HGBA supported you in your business?

I’m a licensed independent insurance agent and when my customer couldn’t get their wills and estate planning done at a reasonable price, I started looking around. Then I found LegalShield & IDShield and the first thing I noticed was they would do your wills, financial durable power of attorney and medical directives for husband and wife at no extra cost. I immediately joined the company and it’s been more than four years now.

I’ve made some very good friends since I’ve been associated with HGBA. It hasn’t led to any new clients yet, but I believe that will change once people understand what my business can do for them and their families and most of all their businesses.

How does your business serve the local community? Everyone needs a will but only about 40% have them and of those, only 25% have updated them in the last three years. In addition, I have a service that addresses identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission, it’s been the number one crime for the past 17 years. I can help those impacted and have a complete restoration done by licensed private investigators and law firms, if needed. Businesses need to have this as a benefit to their employees, which can save the business money.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. It was having LegalShield for my wife and me. My wife was owed a large sum of money from a defense contractor and they didn’t want to pay because they didn’t get the contract. Once we contacted the law firm, she was paid within six weeks. And the best part about it is we didn’t owe anything to the law firm. It was part of our membership.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1. Know what you want and have a specific time to do it, so it is measurable. 2. Create a mission statement and treat your company like a Fortune 500 business, because to you, that’s what it is. 3. Set your goals using the SMART system: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound.

Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here? While stationed in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, I was offered a job in Fairfax. When I retired from the Navy in June 1996, I came here, started working at Information Spectrum and then found my soulmate. We’ve been together 23 years now.

What is your favorite season in this area, and why? I like spring and summer. Springtime you’re seeing new life blossoming all around and it gives people the opportunity to look at life through different lense. I also like the summertime because when it’s warm I get to drive my Thunderbird Sport Coupe with the top down!

What are some hobbies you enjoy? Spending time with my wife, my children and my six grandchildren. Playing golf with my best friends and spending time with my military brothers and sisters.

What is your favorite restaurant? I don’t have a favorite restaurant; if it has chicken, I’m ok. But it gives me pleasure to take my wife to L’Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls; she loves the food.

What was your most interesting job prior to your current profession? Being selected as the Army Corp of Engineers FEMA Disaster Officer while stationed in Hawaii. I got to help the people on Kauai when Hurricane Iniki destroyed the Island. My being there made a major impact in the service and response the people of Kauai received from all the contractors and Government Agencies involved in restoration of the Island. My sole focus was making sure their needs were met so they could get back to living again. ❖
