Erupting Color At Phran s ’ Azalea Trails Local couple transform an unruly landscape into an flowering sanctuary Phil and Frances Louer built a homemade sanctuary featuring azaleas at their home on their quaint five acres. The flowering shrubs aren’t just an amusing hobby; they have become a lifestyle for the Louer’s. The couple seeks, plants, grows, and shares their love for this brilliant flowering species. During the last two months of Spring, their garden is spectacular. The two began calling Haymarket their home in the 1980s after finding love in Arlington. With a move to the country, the new couple realized the planting potential on their property and each brought azaleas from their previous homes. Combined, Phil and Frances brought close to two hundred separate azalea plants to their new space and their private garden was started. “This area was total jungle when we moved in here with grape vines and honey suckle,” Phil explained. “And lots of poison ivy,” Frances playfully remembered. Phil continued, “It took us a while, after we cleaned out an area we starting putting plants in.” 6

Within two years they tamed their unruly landscape and created bedded sections to graciously host their azaleas. Each bed is set to hold ten to forty different plants with meandering trails in between to allow you to appreciate the beauty. “We call it Phran’s Azalea Trails,” Phil mentioned, being the combination of their names and their passion for a blossoming backyard. Phil claims they aren’t landscape artists but with Frances’ eye for color, her personal mixtures add a variety of textures and color-pop throughout their yard. It might cause a seasoned designer to be jealous. Their collection has greatly expanded from its humble beginnings as a personal garden with a few hundred plants to currently having well over nine thousand. The transformation from garden to trail was natural and unexpected. As the seasons passed new plants were added from local purchases or swaps with other azalea enthusiasts. Frances continued doing her annual cuttings (about thirteen hundred) and

Phil kept up by potting and planting. “You go to these gardens and you’ll see these pretty azaleas all shaped nicely - we don’t do that,” Phil pointed out. “Ours grow naturally, and a lot of people think that’s good!” Right now the Louer’s have five thousand azaleas planted on their property, including some of the original they brought over thirty years ago from Arlington. The other forty-five hundred are in pots near the barn, patiently waiting for their turn to be planted. “I can’t believe I did that,” Frances laughed at the number of pots they accumulated from her cuttings. “It’s hard to believe we did it at all,” Phil exclaimed. Along with her routine cuttings, Frances’ fondness for unusual hybrids contributed to their collection. She and Phil would purchase them from local hybridizers. Their collection features hundreds of varieties. With so many azaleas Phil recognized the need for organization. He started a spreadsheet Haymarket Lifestyle

and developed a map of the property with each bed precisely defined. “I’d go out and site what the area looked like and draw it,” Phil described his process of mapping. “Then I’d put little spots on it where the plants are and look at the names of them since there are name tags on the plants.” Phil developed an efficient way to keep track of each plant and its location, which has come in handy when Frances inquires about a plant. “Yeah, we know where our plants are,” Phil laughed. While the whole yard isn’t mapped yet it is still a great reference and can be added to in the future. Phran’s Azalea Trails has been

APRIL 2012

entertaining guests for years by hosting groups from the Azalea Society, local garden clubs, and the Rhododenron Society. Buses loaded with admirers stroll through the trails appreciating and photographing the Louer’s personal paradise. They’ve had visitors from the Norfolk Arboretum and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina stop by for specific cuttings to add to their respective collections. “The man from Norfolk said ‘I’m coming back next year when they are in bloom and taking cuttings all day’,” Frances said. Norfolk Arboretum connected with the couple to get a cutting from a specific species they

couldn’t get access to. The Louer’s have been told that they have the greatest selection of azaleas on the east coast. “I’ll tell you when the two of us got into this place it was just a natural thing,” Phil smiled. “There was just no stopping us.” April begins the azalea season and Phran’s Azalea Trails will be open as soon as they are in full bloom. The season is short, ending in the middle of June so make it a destination this spring. The Louer’s don’t keep regular business hours so give them a call at (703)754-2824 if you are planning on stopping by.

Care

S t r e t c h i n g Gas Dollars

by Harry Harth, Manager, Virginia Tire & Auto Gainesville

Gas prices are on the rise again, so drivers are looking for ways to get the maximum miles out of a tank of gas. In addition, improving fuel economy also benefits the environment by releasing fewer emissions into the air. Quality auto maintenance and care, sensible driving, a properly-tuned engine, and combining and scheduling trips, will each help to effectively get the best gas mileage a vehicle can provide. Here are some tips that will help stretch those gas dollars: 1. Drive safely and smoothly: Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 miles per hour. Avoid aggressive driving, speeding and rapid acceleration. Cruise control helps to maintain a constant speed. 2. Remove extra weight from your vehicle: It is estimated that 100 extra pounds can reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy by up to two percent.

3. Replace the air filter: Replacing a clogged air filter on vehicles with fuel-injected, computer-controlled gasoline engines (prevalent in most cars manufactured from the1980s forward) can improve fuel economy by 6 to 11 percent. Replacing a clogged air filter on an older car with a carbureted engine may improve fuel economy 2 to 6 percent under normal conditions. 4. Keep tires properly inflated and wheels aligned: By checking tire condition and air pressure during every oil change, gas mileage will increase, overall handling will improve and tire life will be extended. The Department of Energy estimates that 1.25 billion gallons of gasoline, approximately one percent of total consumption, are wasted each year on underinflated tires. 5. Use the recommended grade of oil and change it by following the vehicle’s suggested maintenance schedule. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by 1–2 percent.

6. Replace spark plugs and make sure they are not misfiring. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence reports that bad spark plugs can decrease fuel economy by up to 30 percent and can cost drivers up to about 94 cents per gallon. 7. Combine errands: Fuel is much more efficient when the engine is warm, so consider making stops to the grocery store, dry cleaner and gas station all in one outing. It is also recommended to fill the gas tank early in the morning or late at night; by avoiding the heat of the day, the fuel will be denser and the vehicle will get more gas for the same amount of money. 8. Avoid unnecessary idling: Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner use. It also pollutes the air and wastes money. By putting that errand list together, driving wisely and safely, and taking care of the vehicle, those gas dollars will be stretched to get the vehicle the best gas mileage!

Clean

KEEP PRINCE WILLIAM BEAUTIFUL by Kayne Karnbach

In 1982, a small group of dedicated volunteers organized a cleanup of litter and debris in Prince William County. Later that year, recognizing the need for an organized, volunteer-based group to help preserve the environment and keep the county clean and litter free, the Board of County Supervisors formalized that volunteer group into the Prince William County Litter Control Council. This group would serve as the official body charged with planning and implementing litter prevention in Prince William County. The Litter Control Council, later known as Prince William Clean Community Council and now Keep Prince William Beautiful, Inc. (KPWB), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Over the course of thirty years, KPWB has made many strides toward litter prevention and control. With the support and participation of Prince William County government, citizens and businesses, KPWB has grown from a group of eight volunteers in 1982, to a full time organization with 6,000 volunteers and 75 business participants each year. Currently, KPWB is kicking off the spring season with two major events. The first is their 2012 Spring Cleanup Campaign, which runs in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup. KPWB is a national affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. The second major event is their annual Route 1 Cleanup – a 10 mile stretch of highway from the Prince William County line to Joplin Road in Triangle, near Quantico Marine Base. Officially kicking off March 31 through June 30, the 2012 Spring Cleanup Campaign encourages neighborhoods, schools, 10

churches and businesses to get out and enjoy the spring weather by cleaning their yards, surrounding communities, parks, school campuses and roadways. There is no better time to explore your community, start planting a garden or picking up litter and debris so that your neighborhood can really shine! KPWB assists everyone who wants to get involved by providing free trash bags, publicity materials (banners and posters), give-aways and landfill vouchers (to help with trash disposal) through their registration form. To download the form, visit www. keepprincewilliambeautiful.org. KPWB’s annual Route 1 Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. They are currently recruiting volunteers for this major cleanup effort and asking for support from the local business community in the form of refreshments for volunteers. For more information, or to volunteer refreshments or manpower, contact Brenda or Kayne at (571) 285-3772. In addition to major cleanup events, KPWB has six core programs designed to remove and prevent litter. These programs also encourage and enlist citizen and business participation in keeping Prince William beautiful and safe. The programs are: Fall and Spring Cleanup Campaigns, Adopt-a-Spot, Clean Shopping Center Surveyors, County Litter Survey, Recycling Speakers Bureau and Storm Drain Labeling. If you absolutely hate seeing litter in your neighborhood or favorite spot, KPWB’s Adopt-A-Spot Program is perfect for you.

Through the program, volunteers are asked to “adopt” an area of Prince William County and agree to keep it clean and litter free. In exchange for their commitment, volunteers receive trash bags, gloves and safety vests. In addition, KPWB will even furnish a sign bearing the adopting individual or group’s name. Having a sign with your name plastered on it is not a vanity thing, the sign informs the public of the need, and communicates the fact that there are people who care about where they live and the condition of the environment. If you are concerned about litter and want to play a role not just in removal, but in helping to measure and reduce this problem over time, the Clean Shopping Center Surveyors Program is exactly what you are looking for. This program focuses on the increasing role commercial scale development plays in our everyday lives and its affect on the local environment. Through this program, volunteers agree to survey a shopping center (usually one they patronize) four times a year, filling out a 32-point checklist. The survey asks volunteers to rate everything from the overall condition of the center to whether illegal dumping is occurring. The data provided through these surveys is used to help property owners and Prince William County address and resolve environmental issues through collaboration and enforcement if necessary.

are the solutions to the litter problem. If this sounds like you, the Speakers Bureau on Recycling Program is a perfect fit. Through the program, volunteers have the opportunity to present to community groups and students about recycling and resource conservation. This year, the program will reach 750 people. In Prince William County, we are blessed to have many natural resources in the form of local rivers and streams. Even if we can’t identify every body of water, most of us are familiar with the Chesapeake Bay. KPWB’s Volunteer Storm Drain Labeling Program is designed to protect the Chesapeake Bay from pollutants that enter via smaller local bodies of water. Pollutants are a big problem, especially in older neighborhoods where storm drains lead directly to creeks such as Neabsco and Marumsco. From there, pollutants enter into major water supplies including the Occoquan Reservoir, the Potomac River, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. The program works to protect these resources by educating the public through school presentations and by placing storm drain labels with an anti-polluting message on them (in English and Spanish). This year, we expect volunteers in the program to label 1,690 storm drains.

Along those same lines, KPWB’s quarterly litter surveys focus not on commercial development, but on key roadways in Prince William County. The data provided from these surveys is used by KPWB, national anti-litter organizations such as Keep America Beautiful and by Prince William County to better address the issue of roadside litter. For many people, the continued increase in post consumer products and recycling itself

KPWB’s mission is to serve Prince William County by partnering with residents, businesses and government to educate and inspire people to be environmental stewards and keep Prince William beautiful. More information about Keep Prince William Beautiful can be found by visiting www.keepprincewilliambeautiful.org or by contacting Brenda or Kayne at (571) 285-3772.

History

The

Tylers

by John Toler

of Haymarket

Part 2: An influential family in war and peace In Western Prince William County, members of the Tyler family held positions of power and influence over the years, and owned some of the bestknown properties in the Haymarket area. The branch of the Tyler family that included Robert Horner Tyler (18381903) lived at The Shelter, on presentday Shelter Lane. This family is often referred to as the “Shelter Tylers.” George Grayson Tyler, for whom George G. Tyler Elementary School in Haymarket is named, was one of the “Shelter Tylers” (See Haymarket Lifestyle, March 2012). Another branch of the family lived at Woodlawn, on present-day Haymarket Drive near the intersection with Old Carolina Road (U.S. 15) for many years, and are remembered as the “Woodlawn Tylers.” The first Tyler to live at Woodlawn was William Tyler (1756-1816), the son of John Tyler and Margaret Gray Tyler. William Tyler served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1803-05 and 1808-12, and was married to the former Margaret Webb. At the time, Woodlawn consisted of 937 acres. One of their sons was John Webb Tyler (c. 1798-1862), a lawyer who became a judge in the Prince William Circuit Court in 1850. Judge Tyler’s first wife was his first cousin, Mary Tyler, the daughter of George Gray and Cecilia Ann Campbell Tyler. Mother-in-law Cecilia Tyler was the aPriL 2012

daughter of Rev. Isaac Campbell. According to Linda Wright, president of the Buckland Preservation Society, in 1797 George and Cecilia Tyler sold 20 acres of their combined estates to John Love for the establishment of the Town of Buckland. John and Mary Tyler raised 12 children at Woodlawn. Following Mary’s death in June 1840, Mr. Tyler moved to Warrenton and practiced law at the Warrenton bar before becoming a judge. About 1845, he married Miss Gwynetta Baylor Dade (1814-1883). The couple had

three children: Constance (1848-1922), Gwynetta (b. 1850) and John W. Jr. (b. 1853). Mother Gwynetta and daughter Constance are buried in the Warrenton Cemetery. According to Fauquier County, 1840-1919 compiled by Joseph A. Jeffries, “Judge Tyler was a power in his own county, and had already been a practitioner at the Warrenton Bar. He was certainly a conservator of its highest standing. He

was a dignified man, free of trifling and not easy to approach. Whatever may have been the impression he made, he came to this office to administer justice, and the effect of his decisions satisfy as how well he performed his duties.”

Notable Military Service Judge Tyler’s oldest son William Henry Tyler (b. 1822) graduated from the USMA at West Point, and participated in the Battle of Vera Cruz during the Mexican War. He died at Woodlawn in 1853. During the Civil War, four of his surviving sons served in the Confederate Army. Lt. Charles E. Tyler (1830-1912) served in the 49th Virginia Infantry, and Cpl. Madison C. Tyler rode with the Black Horse Cavalry. Charles Tyler survived the war and later returned home, but according to Gen. Lewis Marshall Helm in Black Horse Cavalry: Defend Our Beloved Country, Madison Tyler was killed in action in Prince William County July 1861 by friendly fire from a South Carolina regiment.

Lyttleton Tyler (b. 1836) enlisted in the Black Horse Cavalry in March 1863, and was captured by Union forces near Richmond in March 1865. He was confined in Ft. Monroe Prison until being released the following June, according to Gen. Helm. More is known about Grayson Tyler (1834-1897), who grew up in Warrenton and attended R. M. Smith’s Classical School in the Warren Green. When in his twenties, he took over management of his family’s properties in Prince William County and lived at Woodlawn. When the Civil War broke out, Grayson Tyler and Dr. George S. Hamilton organized the Prince William Riflemen; Grayson served as the company’s first lieutenant under Capt. Hamilton. The Prince William Riflemen later became part of the 17th Virginia Infantry, and Lt. Tyler soon rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

“As a soldier, Col. Tyler ranked with the best. He was ever to be found where duty called,” wrote Joseph Jeffries. “The deafness with which he was afflicted made keener his vision, and on the battlefield, none more than he could grasp quickly the situation.” After the war, Col. Tyler returned to Woodlawn. As Joseph Jeffries recalled, “Col. Tyler is holding the fort on his old tramping ground near Buckland in Prince William County, where he is maintaining the reputation of the Old Dominion by demonstrating that her soil will yield a support to those who faithfully and intelligently till it.” In 1876, Grayson married Annie Hunton (1847-1914), the daughter of Charles (b. 1813) and Ellen McNeil Hunton (18141904) of Cerro Gordo. Not long after their marriage, Grayson and Annie Tyler moved to Cerro Gordo, where their son, also named Grayson (1879-1970), was born. In 1914, young Grayson married Sallie Norton Tyler (1883-1961), George G. Tyler’s youngest sister.

Other Tyler Family Connections Judge Tyler’s uncle Charles Tyler (c. 17511815) and his wife, Sarah Brown Tyler, built Mill Park north of Haymarket in the early 1800s. Charles and Sarah had nine children, and Sarah survived her husband by 24 years, remaining at Mill Park. Their son James M. Tyler bought Mill Park from the estate after Sarah’s death in 1839. James died sometime before

Charles and Sarah Brown Tyler came to Haymarket in the early 1800s and built Mill Park, on the Old Carolina Road north of Haymarket.

Right: Rear of the main house at Woodlawn, as it appeared in the 1960s. Courtesy of the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC), Bull Run Regional Library.

Left: While he was practicing law in Warrenton, John Webb Tyler lived in this late 18th century house at 100 Main Street. Judge Tyler died in this house, which was later owned by Albert Fletcher and then his son, T.N. Fletcher. The house was demolished in 1939 to make way for a new grocery store.

1852 and another son, George Gray Tyler (1797-1856), stayed at the old homeplace until 1856, at which time he moved to Front Royal. He died a year later. Before coming to Mill Park, George Gray Tyler and his wife, the former Julia Anne Peake, had lived at Waterfall, in the village of Waterfall in the hills west of Haymarket. George and Julia had two sons who were officers in the Confederate army. Brig. Gen. Charles Humphrey Tyler (1826-1873) graduated from the USMA at West Point in 1848 and served in the Union army before the war. Capt. James M. Tyler (1831-1868) was badly wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, and left for dead. Remarkably, he was found in time and ended up in the care of Union Surgeon J. B. Wright, whose daughter happened to be married to one of James’ brothers. After recovering sufficiently from his wounds, he was returned through the lines to

Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard’s army. After George Gray Tyler’s death, Mill Park was sold to Enoch Pratt, who held onto the property until the end of the Civil War. Around 1866, it was purchased by Christian Heineken, who built a successful agricultural enterprise and winery on the property (See Haymarket Lifestyle, November 2010).

Changes Hide the Past Aside from the George G. Tyler Elementary School, few physical reminders of the Tyler family survive in Haymarket. Most of the old Tyler home places are gone. Descendants of the Tyler families still living in the Haymarket area include Ellie Ivancic, the great-granddaughter of Bailey Tyler (1866-1938) – the brother of George Grayson Tyler – and Anner Alrich Tyler (c. 1871-1914). A recognized

authority on local history, Mrs. Ivancic is also the Director of Research and Interpretation at the Haymarket Museum. Study of her Tyler roots is ongoing. Sallie Norton Tyler was George G. Tyler’s youngest sister. According to Mrs. Ivancic, she was known in later years as “Aunt Nort.” “When they were young, my older brothers and sisters would see ‘Aunt Nort’ and her husband (the younger Grayson Tyler), who was called ‘Uncle Buck’ walking around Haymarket,” Mrs. Ivancic recalls. “I don’t have any memory of either of them, but I do know that eventually the Tyler sisters lived together at The Highlands until they died.” Part 3, to be published in May, will focus on the historic properties around Haymarket once owned by the Tyler family, and what has become of them.

my favorite garden tools Gardening is fun and gardening is work. Having and using good tools makes gardening more fun than work. There are two that I consider essential so much so that I now have more than one of each so I have a back up if I lose or break one. The first is my soil knife. I discovered this only a few years ago when my sister and I were working in our mother’s garden. I was using a narrow trowel that I really liked for digging and weeding but Barbara was slipping weeds out faster and easier than me with a soil knife. I got one immediately upon returning home and now it is my primary garden tool. Not only does it weed well but it loosens packed dirt around roots, digs bulb holes with ease, slides into and breaks up packed mulch, and the serrated edge cuts through roots and vines. Another name for this tool is Hori Hori knife. These can be more expensive and I found the wood handle to be heavy and uncomfortable. Look for the one with the orange plastic handle. My other essential garden tool is my Joyce Chen scissors. Small and lightweight they are easy to use and easy to lose. Made of stainless steel they can cut through plant material with ease and then some. I almost lost the end of a finger two years ago. (Gloves are always a good idea.) Be sure to buy a pair that has bright colored handles. I like using these, when the task allows, as an alternative to pruners because the scissors motion is different from the pruning motion and gives my hand a break. Also, they can get into places that pruners can’t and they can be more precise. This brand is so popular and trusted that people don’t call them garden scissors – they are known simply as “Joyce Chens.”

Offering comprehensive gynecological and obstetrical services including: • Minimally invasive surgery • Infertility evaluation and counseling • High risk pregnancy care • Menopause management • Microsurgery / tubal Reconstruction

Of course, we all need good shovels and loppers and pruners and we all have favorite buckets and hose nozzles but I have duplicates of my soil knife and Joyce Chen scissors because to me they are as important as water and sunshine.

Cardiac Patients Find Peace of Mind Prince William Hospital enrolls patients in clinical study, expands heart and vascular services

According to the American Heart Association, one of every five deaths in the United States can be attributed to heart disease. Further, 50 percent of heart attack fatalities occur within one hour of symptom onset and occur before the patient even reaches a hospital. Mike Wynn, former pro golfer and Head Pro at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, had a long history of cardiovascular disease when he elected to participate in a new clinical study at Prince William Hospital. Wynn recently underwent a procedure with Hamid Taheri, MD, of Virginia Cardiovascular Associates, to implant the AngelMed Guardian cardiac monitor and alert system. Wynn is one of the first patients in Virginia to take part in the nationwide study. The AngelMed Guardian system is designed to track significant changes in the heart’s electrical signal and alerts patients to seek medical attention. “We are very excited to offer this potentially lifesaving modality to the community and to our patients,” said Shahram Yazdani, MD, of Virginia Cardiovascular Associates. “By detecting a heart attack about to happen, not only is there potential

to save lives but we can also potentially limit the degree of muscle damage, which directly correlates with the long-term outcome of the patient.” Wynn, an active 67 year old grandfather of three, had his first heart attack in 1993 and received more than 10 stents prior to getting the Guardian. Through close treatment of his disease, he and his wife Mary, have raised two daughters, Kim and Sandra, and enjoy their three grandkids and one great grandchild. His family keeps him going and seeking new ways to be watchful of his heart disease. “By participating in the study, I’ll have peace of mind, and be able to seek treatment right away if needed,” said Wynn. The AngelMed Guardian System is comprised of an internal implantable device about the size of a standard pacemaker with a lead into the heart, an external telemetry device, and a programmer that aids physicians in evaluating heart signals. When someone has a heart attack, it is typically the result of a blood clot closing one of the three major coronary arteries. “When this happens, there is a shift in the ST segment of the heart signal caused by the electrical difference between the portion of the heart muscle fed by the

closed artery and the rest of the heart that is still receiving oxygen,” said AngelMed CEO, David Fischell, Ph.D. “The ALERTS trial is designed to test the Guardian’s ability to detect this electrical shift in a clinical setting and then provide an early warning to patients that could potentially save lives.” Prince William Hospital is among the first medical facilities to participate in the AngelMed Guardian ALERTS study. To participate in the ALERTS study, patients must meet various inclusion criteria. For more information on the AngelMed Guardian system or the ALERTS study protocol, contact Clinical Research Coordinator Kathleen Morgan, RN at Virginia Cardiovascular Associates at (703)335-8750 ext. 127.

First Rate Cardiac Care in Your Community Before Prince William Hospital’s heart catheterization lab opened in January 2011, residents of western Prince William County had to travel out of the area to receive a heart catheterization procedure or emergency heart care. Now, they have the convenience of having this done close to home. Prince William’s expert physicians and staff are providing diagnostic and interventional heart catheterizations, pacemaker battery changes, and permanent implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and pacemaker insertions to patients, 24 hours a day, seven days a week in its state-of-the-art, 4334 square foot heart catheterization lab. The heart catheterization lab at Prince William Hospital is the only provider of this vital service in western Prince William County. In its first year of operation, Prince William physicians performed 50 percent more procedures than anticipated. Heart and vascular services will continue to expand in 2012 to continue serving the needs of the community with electrophysiology studies and procedures. Paradiso Pizza and Subs is a full service pizzeria whipping up classically crave-able pizzas and super-stacked subs. Together with his family, Amro opened Paradiso and has been giving customers quality dishes with a lot of personality. Tease your tongue with one of their hot appetizers or fresh salads. La Grange Cuvee Blanc 2012

The impact of a citrus and summer flower nose alongside a mouthful of tree ripened white peach are the first things to notice with this wine, followed by viscosity wrapped in a gossamer of honey glycerin. Delicious with spicy foods! Wine Information 40% Traminette 30% Vidal Blanc 20% Viognier 10% Riesling Alcohol Content: 12.5%

The Winery:

The Winery at La Grange is Prince William County’s premier winery nestled at the foot of the Bull Run Mountain. La Grange is a restored three and a half story red brick manor house built in the 1790s. In September 2006, it opened as a winery, thanks to an investment group led by wine industry icon Chris Pearmund. The 20-acre property offers two relaxing sitting rooms with fireplaces upstairs, additional indoor seating downstairs and plenty of outdoor seating. Rich in history, visitors can travel through time while looking through artifacts found on the property and hear the staff tell ghost stories.

Tasting Room:

Tastings are conducted daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm in the tasting room located in the Manor House. Tastings cost only $10 and presently include 4 whites, 1 rosé and 8 reds. Private tastings for large groups are available with a reservation and at a cost of $15 per person.
