Recently, I spent a few days in Florida watching one of our professional baseball clients (Brandon Snyder) play a few games in spring training. Before a home game, Brandon took a few minutes to show me around the facility. I had access to the strength and conditioning area of the World Champion Boston Red Sox! I watched a number of highlevel athletes working out prior to a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. This was really cool stuff. I was able to make a few key observations while I was there. My biggest takeaway was that the training systems that I’ve developed, borrowed and adapted from other practitioners are strikingly similar to what these pro athletes were doing. Contrary to what some might think, there wasn’t any yelling or throwing big weights around. For the most part, what I did observe was some extremely gifted athletes doing soft tissue work, mobility exercises and a ton of core strength and conditioning. The word “core” is overused these days by a lot of people that don’t really understand it; but if done correctly and with the right purpose, there’s no better “bang for your buck” 6

programming to keep your body strong and injury free. Brandon and I had a discussion over dinner one evening and I discovered that the life of a pro baseball player is not as glamorous as one might expect. Sure, there are a few of those guys making $20 million a year, flying around in private jets, living in mansions on the water and driving Lamborghinis. But most of them aren’t. It’s a job; a job that requires an abundance of talent, patience, hard work and passion. It’s different than the careers of most people because they make a living with their bodies and have an unbelievable amount of pressure just to keep their job and stay on a professional roster. Brandon explained, “Starting in February and continuing all the way through October, it’s a 7-daya-week grind. The demand on our bodies (physically, mentally and emotionally) is incredible, by midseason its survival of the fittest.” I then realized the number one priority beyond staying injury-free is focusing on moving better, feeling better and performing better.

I tried to relate his journey to our everyday adult clients and our high school athletes. I quickly realized that most of the training I observed athletes doing on the field and in the Red Sox weight room is the same as

what we use in our programming every day at Next Level. Validation!

Glute Bridge with alternating Leg extensions -5 second holds x 5 each side

Mini Band Walks –Forward, backward and side to side

Professional athletes need the same type of daily care that all of us need in everyday life just to endure the rigors of a long season. They need to move better, feel better and perform better; just like you and I. With that in mind, on these pages, I compiled a list of exercises and coaching points that we use every day just for that reason. I recommend doing all or some of these exercises daily. This routine is not particularly difficult. It’s designed to help improve your movement, general mobility and overall feeling.

Bird Dogs (5 second holds X 5 each side)

Body Weight Squats -weight in heels & hands up

Planks -15 seconds-1 minute holds Squat-to Stand –all four steps slowly (5 times)

World’s Greatest 3-way Stretch –hold each position for 3-5 seconds

Push-ups or push up holds – hands directly under shoulders

These are all exercises that our clients perform on a daily basis at Next Level. Along with strength training and interval cardio finishers, our safe and effective programs are designed to work with all clientele from beginners to advanced. Safe progressions are key!

Band, dumbbell or cable rows – finish with thumbs up in your arm pits

Whether you are a professional athlete trying to make a big-league roster, a computer programmer that sits 8 hours a day or a busy stay-at-home mom shuttling the kids from activity to activity; when attacking your fitness goals, be sure to include these exercises in order to keep your body moving better and feeling better.

History

Winterham, long remembered as ‘Dr. Payne’s house’ By John T. Toler

New regulations, public sentiment saved the historic home in the center of Haymarket Winterham, a Victorian-era home at 15101 Washington Street in Haymarket, has stood by quietly as commercial development has taken place elsewhere on the 3.4-acre lot it occupies. In the 120-or-so years of its existence, the old house has witnessed a lot of change, especially during the last decade. The site occupied by Winterham goes back to 1799 and the establishment of the Town of Haymarket, when the land at the corner of Washington and Fayette streets was designated as Lot 80. The first recorded owner was Thomas Fallup, who purchased the lot in 1801. Lot 80 was later owned by Dr. Cyrus C. Marsteller, who built a large brick home on the property, likely on the site of the existing house. Dr. Marsteller and his wife Eliza raised their seven children, while adding to his land holdings in Haymarket. winterham continued on page 14 By 2004, Winterham still remained much like it was when owned by Dr. Payne, with a broad lawn and large trees lining the driveway at the front of the house. In 1849, Dr. Marsteller sold his property – by then consisting of four town lots (80, 81, 88 and 89), and additional land in Haymarket, totaling 24½ acres – to Thomas A. Smith. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed when Union troops burned Haymarket in November 1862. In 1870, Mr. Smith sold the land to James A. Pattie for $980; it was sold again in late 1876 to David R. and Elizabeth R. Meade, who also owned Beale’s Mill near Haymarket. The next owner was William Sheid, a construction company owner from Washington, D.C., who purchased the property from the Meades in March 1890. Mr. Sheid wanted a summer home where his family could escape the heat and diseases of the city, and with the fresh country air and convenience of the nearby railway station, Haymarket was a good choice. Work started immediately on the

ently taking a large loss. After about four years, the property was sold again, this time to a widow, Mrs. William H. “Nannie” Selden, of Washington, D.C. for $2,300 in cash. It was Mrs. Selden who named the property “Winterham.” She died in October 1913 in Roanoke, and in her will, designated that Helen E. Shoemaker inherit the house and everything in it. Miss Shoemaker held on to Winterham until October 1917, when the property was sold by special court order to Dr. Wade Cleveland Payne (18851963) and his wife Roberta Boxley Payne (1885-1947). They paid $8,000 for the house and 24½ acres, and were issued a Special Warranty Deed.

Remembering Dr. Wade C. Payne Dr. Payne had earned his M.D. degree from the University of Virginia in 1907, and came to the Haymarket area in 1912. At the time, Dr. William Rod-

ham Tulloss was also practicing medicine in Haymarket, but he was gone by 1915, leaving Dr. Payne the only doctor between Warrenton and Manassas.

dents at his office at Winterham, and on thousands of house calls. Dr. and Mrs. Payne had three children while living in Haymarket: Wade C. Jr. (died c. 1990), who was married to Ann Carmines (1924-1955); Roberta (1918-1961), who married long-time Haymarket Postmaster Charles R. Jordan; and Stuart Boxley (1927-1951). In 1912, Dr. Payne became a member of Hay Market Masonic Lodge No. 313, A.F. & A.M., an affiliation he enjoyed for the rest of his life. An officer of the Hay Market Lodge for many years, he served as Master in 1925, 1935 and 1942, and as Deputy Grand Master of the 58th Masonic District in 1938. During World War I, Dr. Payne was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical corps, and was sent to France during that conflict. After completing his military service, he returned to Haymarket to continue his medical practice. Soon becoming involved in civic affairs, Dr. Payne served on the Haymarket Town Council, and was the first president of the Gainesville District Volunteer Fire Department. He was also active with the GainesvilleHaymarket Ruritan Club, as well as a member and vestryman of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Payne was also the president of the Bank of Haymarket, which opened in 1921, but closed in 1933 during the Great Depression. Throughout his long career as Haymarket’s physician, Dr. Payne is remembered as the archetypical country doctor – compassionate, knowledgeable and available. “Dr. Payne not only had office hours, he made house calls,” according to the late Louise Lightner Jamison. “He came out with his little black bag in all kinds of weather, day or night. He delivered all the children in our family. My sister, Charlotte Payne Lightner, was named for him.” Sadly, Dr. Payne was on a rare vacation when little George Lightner suffered appendicitis, and before he winterham continued on page 16 Haymarket Lifestyle

could get treatment his appendix ruptured, and he died. “We always felt that if we could have gotten George to Dr. Payne, he could have saved him,” recalled his sister, Helen Lightner Ray of Haymarket. Indeed, getting around during the early years of Dr. Payne’s practice was often difficult. Brownie Bass Tullous, a beloved citizen of Haymarket for many years, came to town in 1912, the same year as Dr. Payne. In a newspaper account published in 1953, she noted that, “One of the greatest improvements (in the Haymarket area) is the good road system we have. The younger generation cannot realize what this means when they have not known what bad roads were, but to Dr. Payne and our faithful mail carrier J. W. Garrett, and all of us ‘horse and buggy folks,’ good roads mean everything.” Mrs. Charles Gardner, of Haymarket, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Pickett, knew Dr. Payne well. She was born on March 14, 1931 at the family home, delivered by Dr. Payne, “In the first bedroom on the left in the house at Waterfall.” When Mrs. Gardner was just two years old, her mother was stricken with appendicitis, and before she could be taken to the hospital in Warrenton, her appendix burst, putting her in critical condition. “The hospital called my grandmother (Mrs. “Allie” Gossom), and told her to bring me to the hospital, because they didn’t think my mother would make it through the night,” she recalled. “Dr. Payne came to the hospital and sat up with her all night, giving her bourbon or whiskey or something – that’s all they had in those days – and she survived and lived into her 90s. I give Dr. Payne credit for saving her life.” When she was older, Mrs. Gardner visited Dr. Payne’s office on the first floor of the house at Winterham. “You went in through a side door, and there was a waiting room with a couple of chairs, and just one examining room,” 16

she recalled. “He had the dullest needles. I used to hate to get a shot from him, because in those days, the needles weren’t very sharp.” Lee Pearson of Haymarket was also a patient of Dr. Payne, and didn’t like the old injection needles either. “Winterham was Dr. Payne’s home and office. I got my first shot there. I knew he was correctly named,” he recalls. “He once asked me to find a hubcap that he lost off his car, and there was a dollar reward. I sure could have used the money. I looked for it for years. I think I still look for it sometimes.”

But Mrs. Strong knew Dr. Payne long before she arrived at Winterham. He delivered her and her brother, and later her children, James B. Strong and Joan D. Strong Duckett. “Dr. Payne was a wonderful man,” she recalled. “When you were sick, you would start to feel better as soon as he walked into the room.” In 1954, Haymarket was hit by a terrifying hurricane, and Mrs. Strong recalls seeing rain being driven in the front door of the tenant house, and the ceiling in the kitchen collapsing. Dr. Payne took care of a lot of people, and didn’t always get paid for his services, a situation described by historian Eugene M. Scheel in Crossroads and Corners (1996). “One patient, when approached for payment, would offer Dr. Payne a $1,000 bill and ask for change,” wrote Mr. Scheel. “After many replays of this scenario, Dr. Payne took the bill and wrote the patient a check for $990.” During Dr. Payne’s ownership, a generator and batteries When the U.S. in this small outbuilding provided electrical power Army first opened for Winterham’s lights. from the Grand Lodge of Virginia, in recognition of his half-century of service as a Mason and a doctor. Taken ill later that year, Dr. Payne died in Warrenton on Oct. 5, 1963, and was buried in the family plot at St. Paul’s. He was survived by his son, Wade C. Payne Jr., of Norfolk; his sister, Mrs. A. Stuart Jones, of Fredericksburg; and his grandchildren, William Wade Jordan (1955-2007) and Richard Boxley Jordan of Haymarket, and Roberta K. Payne of Norfolk. “Dr. Payne probably would have been voted Haymarket’s ‘Outstanding Citizen of the First Half-Century,’ had there been a vote for such worldly honors,” said Mr. Scheel in an account presented on April 1, 1996 at a public hearing concerning the rezoning of Winterham.

Winterham under new ownership No longer in need of a large house and medical office, in June 1960 Dr. Payne sold Winterham for $26,000 to John R. Friant, who had a lumber business in Manassas. It was during Mr. Friant’s ownership that the 24½- acre property was subdivided. The house at Winterham and 3.4 acres were sold to retired Col. Harry B. and Kathryn Vensel in June 1965 for $60,000, and the rest sold off by 1972. Col. Vensel “…had a concreteblock outbuilding built, where he refinished and worked on furniture, his hobby,” according to Mr. Scheel. “(Mrs. Vensel) ran an antique shop in the frame outbuilding, which may have been built close to the building date of the house. They really spruced the place up.” The Vensels owned the property until April 1972, when they sold Winterham to C. Gunderson and Muriel V. Gilbertson for $70,000. Mrs. Gilbertson was the Mayor of Haymarket from 1978 18

to1984, and for a time the property was known as “the Mayor’s House.” In May 1979, Winterham was photographed and surveyed by architectural historian Frances Jones, as part of the application to have Winterham registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark. Mrs. Jones described the exterior as “…covered with narrow-gauge weatherboards, painted white. The doors and windows are trimmed with plain, box trim with mitered corners. The windows, 2/2 sliding sash, have shutters, painted black. The house has several porches and bay windows, which appear to date from the first construction period.” Inside, the house had ten rooms, including four bedrooms, 1½ bathrooms, and three fireplaces. Mrs. Jones described the interior as, “…very ornately decorated, and is furnished with predominantly Victorian pieces. The hall contains a 4-flight, 2-landing closed-string stair having turned newels, turned balusters and a molded rail. The floors throughout are narrow-board tongue-and-groove, of pine or spruce and oak.” Mrs. Jones noted that the house

had a partial basement, and that the brick foundation was laid in 6-course American bond in two levels. Apparently, the original house was built in the 1890s, and the living room wing added in the early 1900s. She also described Winterham’s outbuildings, including the Delco shed, where “…in the early days of electricity, batteries and a generator to electrically light the house were kept,” until electrical service came to Haymarket. Empty by then, the Delco shed was used for storage, as was another small outbuilding with a flat roof. Surveying the rest of the setting, Mrs. Jones described Winterham as “surrounded by a great number of various trees… the grounds are like an arboretum,” adding that there were two wells on the property at the time. Also on the property was the tenant house, which likely was originally a barn or carriage house. One of the more interesting events to take place during the Gilbertsons’ ownership was the “Winterham Decorator’s Show House,” a fundraising event benefiting the Prince William Symphowinterham continued on page 20 Haymarket Lifestyle

It’s Nifty Being Thrifty Consignment Stores Provide Alternative Green Options for Fashionable Local Ladies Every April we are reminded of the importance of environmental protection – recycle, reduce and reuse – in order to keep our home beautiful. As most of you would agree, the Haymarket and Gainesville area is the best place to live with unique shops, highly rated restaurants and kind residents. We are lucky to live in a community that is supportive of keeping Haymarket and Gainesville’s eco footprint small and to have businesses that sustain that notion. Two businesses in particular are offering residents boutique-style service with designer brands at a fraction of the price…and it’s green! The concept of consignment has been around for a while and it’s an easy, painless process. Fashionable, gently-used, like-new items are brought in by appointment and carefully selected, priced and placed on the floor. The shop and the consigner enter an agreement, which is generally a sixty/forty split on the sale price. Items have a short shelf life of approximately 30-90 days with markdowns to help entice buyers. If an item doesn’t sell within the time period, the consigner can retrieve the item

or allow it to be donated to a local charity. Consignment has proven to be a great way to earn some extra cash, to save a little cash or to continue green efforts. Within Haymarket and Gainesville you’ll find four stores that specialize in women’s consignment, we’ve featured two. This month make a point to help us create a cleaner region and a healthier planet by perusing the aisles, shelves and racks of slighted loved pieces or by dropping off items for consignment.

Owner of both stores, Doris Buck kept getting requests for a ladies consignment shop tailored to designer brands and quality customer service. “Our customers and consignors asked and asked and asked,” Buck explained. “They had high end pieces that I just couldn’t display properly.” Beautiful purses and blouses at The Very Thing for Her.

Buck, with the help of her Store Manager Lisa Dalby, worked to create the store that has since been open for a little over a year and the first of it’s kind in the community. The old house is full - both first and second floors - with fun, fashionable and highly sought after items. Be prepared to find the brands you love that are normally at Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus as well as real and costume jewelry from designers like Stella & Dot. Their round racks are neatly displayed and organized by size so guests can easily thumb through their inventory. Sophistication is abundant here with rack top displays, mannequins and jewelry cases decorated accordingly. “Our consigners have traveled the world,” Buck said. “We’ve got military and State Department [consigners] so some of the things that come in you’ll never see again.” This store is ideal for women looking for elegant, conservative and classic looks. Dalby is super friendly and knows the layout and available items as if they were in her own closet. If you have a question or need help pulling something together she is definitely your girl. “It’s an easy, non-complicated process it doesn’t cost anything to try,” Buck mentioned. “If you are thinking of donating or throwing it away… let’s try to recycle it or reuse it or repurpose it first.” Their consignments are accepted by appointment only.

7937 Stonewall Shops Square, Gainesville (703)743-9577 Tuesday – Saturday 10:00am to 7:00pm; Sunday 1:00pm to 6:00pm www.chicenvy.com A hidden gem in the Stonewall Square Shopping Center, tucked away near Staples and Dunkin Donuts, Chic Envy is a hip consignment shop that offers the latest brands and trends. Christina Crawford and daughter Rhianna Dollar saw a huge opportunity to expand their Fairfax store to Gainesville. They opened their doors five days before Christmas in 2012 and have been busy since. “A lot of people are coming out here building houses, retiring, starting their families here and so for us it really is the best location,” Crawford said. Crawford and Dollar really looked at where their shoppers and consignors for their Fairfax store were located and surprisingly it was west. Opening the Gainesville store allowed them to have a larger inventory and a shorter wait list to consign items. “I’ve been consignment shopping since I was a kid in New Jersey,” Crawford mentioned. “I think a misconception is that it’s going to smell bad, you have to roll up your sleeves and dig with super low prices but we are upscale with items from Banana Republic, Anthropologie, J.Crew and all of the way up to Chanel and Gucci.”

Shoes and dresses line the wall at Chic Envy. 26

Their consignors have traveled all over the world including Paris, Dubai, a boutique in Florida or even Los Angeles. With that don’t be surprised to find special vintage pieces next to popular mass produced brands next to super expensive brands. Chic Envy has clothing items and accessories for every possible scenario: first date, job interview, prom or even a Sunday brunch. They’re knowledgeable, fashionable and not to mention friendly staff can certainly help. Chic Envy is quite eclectic with finds for all styles and prices. Connecting the Body’s Dots…. a Hand s On Appro ach You may have heard the terminology, “integrative medicine” or “integrative health” the past several years. Integrative medicine and integrative health focus on the whole person and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare practitioners and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing. In the current American culture of non-stop movement, individuals need a way to release the feelings of tension, stress and emotional build-up. When commuting and computing has your life out of balance, treatment modalities in therapeutic massage, Reiki, or health coaching are non-invasive, complementary integrative health options that help the body’s systems connect the dots toward healing. These modalities assist the body’s operation such as the musculoskeletal, digestive and endocrine systems get into balance. Repetitive stress injury, nervous dysfunction, digestive dysfunction, hormone imbalance, adrenal fatigue and weaken immune system can be addressed through multiple channels of healing. Integrative and holistic healing techniques, including massage therapy, rely on the body’s intuitive power to heal. 28

Massage can accomplish a range of purpose from relaxation and stress relief to recovery, pain cessation and rehabilitation. The massage modality used varies depending the desired result. A Swedish massage or hot stone massage allows the body to relax. Heat, long, gliding strokes and generalized muscle contact are what can be expected during a massage for relaxation. Reiki is another deep relaxation technique that can be used for stress reduction and pain management. Deep tissue massage targets specific muscular ailments allowing the therapist to palpitate deeper into the muscle with the goal of releasing tightness or impinging bands of muscle fibers. Many times the therapist will use thumbs, knuckles or the elbow to target the affected areas to further “break up” fibers and release tension. Neuromuscular therapy involves locating and releasing active trigger points in the body. The body has multiple trigger points. Depending on the type of activity, these points become irritated creating intense pain and limited range of motion such as when arms are lifted above the

head. In neuromuscular therapy, these points are compressed in order to alleviate pain and deactivate the trigger point. Pre and post event sports massage is a training asset athletes engage to maintain and improve athletic performance. Pre event massage provides blood and oxygen to muscles for optimum functioning. Post event massage, using long, gliding strokes, focuses on promoting the flow and excretion of built up hydrogen ions in the muscles thereby reducing muscular soreness. Additionally, sports massage can enhances recovery after an injury. This is by no means an exhaustive presentation of massage therapy techniques and the associated benefits. However, if a person is looking for a noninvasive and personal approach to healing, considering massage therapy can be a first stop to less pain, better movement and overall wellness. Jennifer Rader, CMT, is one of the practitioners at Medical Massage Specialties, LLC (MMS) in Manassas, VA. MMS provides the above listed therapies and wellness coaching and more. C untdown to the Upcoming Elections Town Candidates’ Profiles

There are only five weeks until the upcoming Town of Haymarket elections. Our staff asked the ten candidates to present a profile of themselves with a bit of their personal background. We worked with them to omit the politics; we will leave that to their campaigns and the journalism coverage in the newspapers and online. Candidates were limited to 300 words, given specific questions to answer and asked to provide a photo. They are listed in alphabetical order by last name. Take the time to get to know each of them. Research their politics, make your choice and vote on May 6th!

CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR

David M. Leake Family man. Public Servant. Trustworthy I am blessed with a loving wife, four wonderful children and an exceptional son-in-law. We have called Haymarket home for 17 years and had the privilege of raising our family here. My wife, Suzanne, is a teacher right here in town at Haymarket Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten. I enjoy spending my free time with my family and one of our favorite activities is hiking and walking together. Another favorite pastime is restoring and breathing life into old cars. I can still recall the afternoon Suzanne phoned to tell me she had just found our new home in a little town called Haymarket. It was charming, quaint, and out just far enough from the city. It has been exciting to see, and to be involved in, the transition of Haymarket as it grows and moves forward while respecting its historical past. It is the complete package of a small town community with big town advantages. I am honored to have an exceptional charitable organization right here in our town. The Haymarket Regional Food Pantry serves the town in many different ways. The Pantry is staffed solely by volunteers and feeds over 250 families per week. It also provides community service opportunities for many families, students and individuals thus providing the town with a common core of serving others. Our community belongs to all of us and we all should be involved in some way. Helping our community starts with shopping locally to support our town businesses. Residents also need to be informed on town issues, ask questions, and share their personal expertise. By partnering and working together we can make Haymarket be the place everyone wants to call home. www.VoteHaymarket.com 30

Josh M. Mattox Designer, Technical, Analytical My wonderful wife, Julia, and I will be celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary in July along with the birth of our first child. When we aren’t busy setting up the nursery and preparing for our new arrival, Julia and I tend to our own hobbies. She enjoys crocheting and baking while I spend my time creating game design concepts and bringing them to life. When we made the decision to buy a house, the first area we researched was Haymarket. We looked at houses within Dominion Valley and other nearby communities, but it wasn’t until we turned onto Washington Street when we felt more at home. The idea of living within walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants in a small historical town won us over. We also enjoy the Town’s annual events and celebrations that take place every year. The Haymarket Regional Food Pantry is an organization many families depend on. To pledge my support, I attended the 4th Annual Haymarket Hoe Down and worked as a guest bartender. Having the opportunity to pay it forward to those in need was such a great feeling! Become involved! Many of us are busy with work or prior commitments, but that shouldn’t discourage anyone from taking a moment to donate, even if it’s a small donation of food or money every bit helps. 8 CANDIDATES FOR TOWN COUNCIL elections continued from page 30

Steven C. Aitken Family man, volunteer, consensus builder My wife Debbie and I moved into Haymarket over 16 years ago. We have three children and one grandchild who love the area. We have two golden retrievers who I walk nearly every day which allows me to meet my neighbors all over town. I am a volunteer firefighter and the pool manager for my homeowners association. I am a computer geek who also helps out many of my family and neighbors with their PC issues. The small town feel Haymarket had. It was unique in this area. I stay because I have been a part of the growth and opportunity that this area enjoys. The Haymarket Food Pantry is one of the crown jewels of our town. It supports so many needy families and reminds us that we all need to work together to be a community. I became involved while on the town council when there was a faction who wanted to terminate their lease in a town owned building. I supported them staying and helped get them a new long term lease. Participate. All to many of us are too busy to enjoy the amenities we have in Haymarket. Everyone should take a little bit of time to find and enjoy these gems.

Matthew E. Caudle Husband, Father and Teacher My wife Beth and I have lived in the Town of Haymarket since 2003 and prior to that lived in Gainesville (Greenhill Crossing) for years. We have three children with two in college and one graduating high school this year. I like helping athletes in strength and speed training as well as coaching baseball. What brought us to Haymarket was the location and small town feel. My favorite local charity is Grace Life Community Church. Together my wife and I serve in the Young Adult Ministry there along with the visitation program. Residents can help our community by becoming involved in local government by attending the town council meetings to help provide direction for our community and running for office.

Milton Kenworthy Property Management Engineer, Honest I am widowed with one son with a granddaughter. I’ve lived in Haymarket for seventeen years. My favorite hobbies are sports, especially Nascar and helping people in need. I really liked the town and wanted to move out of Manassas. My favorite local charity of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry and I became involved through being on the Town Council. Join in the town and work together with a more positive approach. I do not have a website but I can be reached by email at mkenworthy@ townofhaymarket.org.

Chris Morris Bible Teacher, Neighborly and Hunter. I have been living in Haymarket with my wife Dalia and son Matthew since August 2007. We enjoy hiking, camping and spending time with friends. Dalia is that familiar face you see when you walk into Cupcake Heaven and our son, in addition to managing his small web designing company, is presently attending NOVA. After serving in full-time ministry for three years, God opened up a door for me to work at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg Virginia. As we looked for a house to purchase, we fell in love with the small town feeling of Haymarket because both Dalia and I are accustomed to living in this kind of neighborhood as she grew up in Venezuela and I grew up in Jamaica. As part of my responsibilities at Cornerstone Chapel, I serve with the Continuum of Care organization in Loudoun County which is comprised of ministries, churches and organization who care for the homeless in that county. I oversee a ministry that assists in construction and minor repairs to some of these organizations. I believe that main thing anyone can do is to participate in, not only the voting process, but the regular meetings of our town. Residents can also support the local businesses in our town so that they can continue to thrive here. Also, Haymarket is made up of small communities and residents can enhance the development of our town by participating in their communities. www.facebook.com/morrisforhaymarket

Joseph “Joe” R. Pasanello

Family-oriented, survivor, advocate/volunteer Cathy and I have been married for almost 37 years. We are the proud parents of two very accomplished young women, who have brought two wonderful men into our growing family. We are blessed with two beautiful grandchildren. Family is central to our lives and we enjoy spending time together when we are not working or volunteering. We also enjoy hiking, outdoor activities, DIY projects, reading and my favorite - watching movies. Seeking a community with a lot of potential for smart growth, while maintaining that small town appeal and charm, Cathy and I moved to Haymarket in October, 2011. Of course the biggest reason we are here is to be close to our family. But it was also important to find a community where we could meet and get to know our neighbors. We also like the concept of a walkable community with easy access to shops, stores and outdoor activities. In 2011 I was diagnosed with non-hogkin lymphoma, a blood cancer, specifically of the lymphatic system. For this reason I advocate and volunteer for the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) right here in the national capital region, as the LRF is the largest nonprofit in the country that is focused exclusively on eradicating lymphoma and serving those touched by this disease. Residents should take the time to get engaged in the discussion of the future of their community. They can do so by exercising their right to vote for the candidates that they feel best represent their interests and by engaging their council members by offering informed opinions. E-mail: Jcpasa@comcast.net.

Pam Swinford

Designer, Mother, Jack/Jill-of-all-Trades I have been a military spouse for 30 years, mother of 2 fabulous children, and have resided in Haymarket for close to 8 years now. I currently work at The Very Thing Consignment, but have held many different jobs across the country. I enjoy travel in my spare time. We were first brought to this area because of my spouse’s job in the Army, but chose to stay after he retired. Our daughter attends Christopher Newport University and our son is at Battlefield. I planted roots when my husband deployed and became involved in the town with the belief to always leave a place better than I found it. I like to be involved with any organization that supports the Armed Forces. I have always been involved in local schools and support scouting as well. The most significant contribution that local residents can make to everyone’s quality of life is to exercise their right to vote and have their voice heard. The support of local agencies, schools and businesses will help keep this a small, walking community. elections continued on page 36 34

Christ-Follower, Husband, Techie My wife and I bought our first home in Haymarket in 2013 and have lived in the Haymarket/Gainesville area since 2010. We had our first baby, a boy, last November and are loving parenthood. I enjoy music, tinkering and going on adventures. In 2010 I graduated from Cedarville University and moved to Haymarket from the Indianapolis area. We have stuck around because we love the unpretentious, quiet, small-town feeling of Haymarket. I am involved with the Prince William campus of McLean Bible Church. I love that everything it does is filtered through the lens of the gospel. They take the command to help the ‘least of these’ to heart by helping those with disabilities and always strive to be a good neighbor to the surrounding community. I started attending MBC not long after moving to the area. Be involved in the political process by voting and attending town hall meetings. Mother, Volunteer, Athletic I have lived in Haymarket since 2009. I reside with my Husband Daniel, My son Daniel 11 (Student at Reagan Middle), My Twin Girls Izabela and Natalia 8 ( Students at Buckland Mills). A lot of our hobbies are local, we enjoy spending time together as a family.. We were looking for a place to move to and I came across Haymarket. I loved how in Haymarket there was a small town feel. Yet we were not to far from the city. My husband and I loved that quality since we both lived in New Jersey for years. We wanted to find a place that our children could finish out there schooling and maintain long lasting relationships. We both coming from childhoods where we relocated and had to make new friends. Here in Haymarket it will be good for them and their memories. I have been involved with The Girl Scouts Organization and a Troop Leader for my girls troop for the last 3 years. This being our third year is exciting for our troop. I am so proud of our girls and enjoy the fact that I can help them during an important time in their development. I feel that the Girl Scouts provide a very empowering place for young women to learn that they can do anything. And that Helping and being involved in your community is a start to making the world a better place. I believe that Residents of Haymarket want what is best for our town. I think by participating in Town meetings and sharing what ideas and visions they see for the town. Could make a big change n this community. In order to grow as a community we need all our residents to be together and help make that kind of a change happen.

You Gotta Get Yogurt!

milk berry Bring in Spring by visiting one of Haymarket’s sweetest additions, Milkberry Yogurt. Owned and operated by Jonathan Mao and Peona Rath, this local husband and wife team created the entire shop from the name to the slogan to the finished store. The pair wanted a business that would benefit the community by providing a place where affordable family fun could be shared. The bright color palette, cheerful employees, color changing spoons, outdoor seating with sidewalk chalk, interactive floor and a wall of yogurt flavors makes for an enjoyable visit. “My wife and I decided to open a yogurt shop because creating a healthy dessert was fun and family oriented,” Mao explained. “Everyone is happy when they walk in and when they walk out!” Milkberry offers traditional do-it-yourself style serving. Their yogurt is made with 100% real dairy and it contains live and active cultures plus probiotics. Creamy and robust their yogurts come in 24 daily flavors. They have options for nonfat, low fat, tart, Greek, nondairy and sugar free. Grab a traditional flavor like Vanilla or Chocolate or go with a contemporary nonfat like Bubble Gum, Luscious Lemon or Cappuccino. Cake Batter tops the list of favorite low fat choices with Peanut Butter as a close second and Sweet Coconut (the owners go-to!) following at third. Fun options without sugar are Coffee, Raspberry and Strawberry.

“It’s important to mention we never use powders in our mix,” Mao said. “We like to let our customers know because it ties in with our name Milkberry.” The couple chose the name by selecting two of the healthy ingredients used to make their yogurt: milk and berries!

Their flavors are great when enjoyed separately but guests are invited to be bold and build a creation they would be proud of like mixing Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Island Banana. Be sure to look for their twisted flavors they feature regularly too. It doesn’t stop with fantastic yogurt flavors, guests can peruse their topping bar that boasts 80 distinct options. Fresh cut fruit, colorful cereal, candy pieces, chocolate syrup, nuts and more are available to decorate, smoother or sprinkle on your yogurt. “The yummiest yogurt on Earth is our slogan,” Mao mentioned. “And we really believe that, come in and try.”

Milkberry Yogurt is located in the Trading Square Shopping Center near Penn Station East Coast Subs and East Ocean Chinese Restaurant. They are open seven days a week Monday through Thursday 1:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 12:00pm to 9:30pm and Sunday 12:00pm to 9:00pm. They are available for birthday parties, celebrations and large get-togethers just give them a call to make arrangements. PARADISE SPRINGS WINERY

Oh the Taste of a Local Wine! One of Virginia’s largest wineries is also one of the area’s newest. Paradise Springs in Clifton has exploded in size after opening just four years ago. The establishment of the first winery in Fairfax County was a contentious one, featuring numerous lawsuits and court action to just open its doors. Started by Chris Pearmund, the winery is owned by Kirk and Jane Wiles on property that has been in Mrs. Wiles’ family for 300 years and is the fulfillment of a dream that has been in the family for generations. Since opening, the facilities have grown from the old log house featuring an addition by a student of the famous Frank Lloyd Wright to a huge, state of the art facility that allows visitors a chance to see winemakers at work while enjoying wines and snacks in a relaxed

atmosphere. Future plans call for an event center catering to an increasing demand for a wedding venue. The extensive list of wines constantly varies among the 17 wines made by veteran winemaker Rob Cox. Rotating wines in and out of the tasting sheet means you can return several times and have a different tasting each time you visit. Of the white wines offered, the 2012 Sommet Blanc is a lush, complex blend that pairs with a variety of dishes or by itself on a warm summer evening while the 2012 Cabernet Franc will challenge the finest Cabs with red meat. In addition to these two standout wines, Paradise Springs has several sparkling wines and a port aged in Bourbon barrels. Picnics, kids and dogs are welcomed. Friday evenings and weekend also feature live music.
