the garden

Lady

A rose STORY Bill Radler, the breeder of the Knockout Rose, revolutionized garden roses. Growing roses had become a hobby that required huge amounts of time, money, energy and patience. Even though Radler had been devoted to roses since he was nine and had a garden filled with fabulous blooms, he believed that there had to be a way to cut down on the endless spraying and fussing that his roses required.

Being short of cash when he was young he learned how to breed his own roses in order to expand his collection. He decided to focus use that knowledge to develop an attractive, hardy, carefree rose. Most rose hips have thirty seeds. The mother of the Knockout Rose had only one seed in the only usable rose hip. And just like Mom, the Knockout Rose came from a hip with only one seed. One seed. The plant didn’t even bloom under the lights in Radler’s basement and was kind of scraggly. Because he was

curious as well as thrifty, Radler did not throw it away but planted it outside. The rest is history. All of the Knockout Roses that we see planted in swoops of landscaping hedges, all of the Knockout Roses in the medians at shopping center parking lots, all of the Knockout Roses delighting us in our gardens came from one seed in one rose hip in a Wisconsin basement. From the first Red Knockout Bill Radler went on to create other colors and color blends, doubles and climbers. He has also bred roses that do not have the Knockout name but are easily as tough and lovely. You can find these other roses by looking carefully at the tag on the plant. Along with the name of the rose – Red Knockout, for instance, and growing instructions, you will see something that until now was probably a meaningless bunch of letters. It is the ICRAR code which means the International Cultivar

Registration Authority for Roses. It will look like this: RADrazz. That is the code for the Red Knockout. The important letters for you and me are the first three – RAD. These indicate the breeder, William Radler. David Austin Roses have AUS as their first three letters. One of the best roses in my garden is Carefree Sunshine. It made sense then when I looked at the tag (I save all of them) and saw RAD in the code. Bill Radler has added roses that are tough AND smell good to his list of breeding successes. Orchid Romance and Milwaukee’s Calatava are two of them. I found the latter one about a month ago and made a place for it. None of his roses do very well being cut and put in a vase but I am sure that during a winter, under grow lights in a basement in Wisconsin, a single seed from a single rose hip just might be the solution to that.

Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz.

RAPID CHANGE COMES TO Part 2: Old Family Farms GAINESVILLE and Businesses Disappear By John T. Toler

Robert Henry Florance and his wife Lillian raised their family in this house off Lee Highway, on part of a 500-acre farm where today’s Virginia Gateway shopping center is located. Courtesy of the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC.)

By the beginning of the 1900s, century, Gainesville had a variety of homes and businesses clustered along present-day Lee Highway (U.S. 29) and Galleher Road and the railroad tracks. In many ways, the village was still compact and close-knit. Among the businesses were the large store on the northeast corner of Lee Highway and Galleher Road owned and operated by V. Bronson Cave, and later, his son, Macon; another store and hotel owned by James A. Pattie; and the steam-powered gristmill run by Thomas L. Thorp and later taken over by George Washington Bartholomew & Son, according to historian Eugene M. Scheel in Crossroads and Corners: A Tour of the Villages, Towns and Post Offices of Prince William County, Virginia (1996). J. B. Ellis had an iron foundry and machine shop, and Dr. Thomas F. Tebb was the physician who took care of the 100 or so residents of Gainesville. Through the 1930s, Robert Ashton “Bub” Pearson was the town blacksmith. He also had a small grocery store on the eastern edge of town. In the first part of the 20th century, the Gainesville Post Office – centrally located in Cave’s store in the “business 8

district”– was run successively by members of the Cave family including Bronson Cave, and later his children Virginia, Mary and Macon. John R. Sweeney Jr. served as a rural mail carrier from 1917 to 1937, and was the postmaster from 1937 to 1948. At that time, the post office was moved to Mr. Sweeney’s store at the corner of Lee Highway and Galleher Road. Farming was the main industry in the region around Gainesville, and shipping cattle and produce by rail to the cities in the north was an important part of the local economy. The largest property owner in those days was Robert Henry Florance (1876-1944), whose property holdings amounted to 1,000 acres on the south side of Lee Highway. The spread went from Wellington Road west to present-day Virginia Oaks, and south down both sides of Linton Hall Road for about a mile. The Florance farm produced grain, beef cattle and milk. Mr. Florance married the former Lillian Catherine Hoffman (1884-1938) in 1910, and they had three children, Mary rapid change continued on page 10 Haymarket Lifestyle

father was going to default on the loan, and he would end up with the property.” The store was in operation until the 1970s. Vernon and Irene Wood lived in the Florance house while caring for her parents. Afterward, they moved to a house on Lee Highway, approximately where Piedmont Tire and Auto is located today. Later, they lived in a new house overlooking a lake built on Florance property off Linton Hall Road. In 1950, the old Florance homeplace – by then owned by Buster Florance – was picked up and moved 250 feet back from Lee Highway, placed on a new foundation, and remodeled. The last agricultural use of the property was as a dairy farm.

The Gardner property in Gainesville was originally called Hillcrest, and was later renamed Hillwood. This is how the c. 1903 main house at Hillwood looked when it was surveyed in 1979. Courtesy of RELIC. rapid change continued from page 8

Lee (1910-1938), Irene Othello (1918-1976), and Henry Atchison “Buster” Florance (1916-1988). They lived in an old house in Gainesville across Lee Highway from the Cave’s store, part of which pre-dated the Civil War. It is believed that the rear section of the house was used as a hospital during that conflict. Other parts of the home dated from 1880. Mr. Florance acquired the 500-acre farm from the heirs of John A. Dunbar in 1903; before the Dunbars, James A. Pattie owned the property. “A house directly west of this one was also owned by the Florance family, similar in plan and appearance, but built much later,” possibly 1915, according to a Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission (VHLC) survey done in 1970. The survey also mentions a small cemetery on the property, which was almost certainly the Shirley family burial ground (See Gainesville, Part 1 in the July issue of Haymarket Lifestyle).

Vernon Wood probably best remembered for his Barter Post, a used furniture and antique business he started in 1945. It was located on the south side of Lee Highway, at the entrance of today’s Virginia Oaks community. For years, he worked for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle and traveled all over the region, which allowed him to pick up some great “finds” along the way. “Buying, selling and trading were a big part of Dad’s life. He would travel around to different places and see a piece of furniture or other interesting things, and he would buy them and put them in his car,” recalled Robert Wood. “Further down the road, he might talk to someone else about something he had found, and sell it to them.” Lacking the funds to start another business, Vernon partnered with Buster Florance, who gave him the land on which to build the first Barter Post. “We actually built that building ourselves,” Robert recalled. “That’s why the floor was not level. It looked like something out of Amateur Night.” In the mid-1950s, Vernon Wood and Buster Florance bought property on Lee Highway from Henry Williams, and opened a garage and junkyard business, which they named A-1 Motors. It was located next to and behind Mr. Sweeney’s building on the corner of Lee Highway and Galleher Road, remembered by most as the Luke place, and later as the Christmas Shop. rapid change continued on page 12

The Wood Family Businesses

Vernon H. Wood (1914-1996), the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clay Wood of Nokesville, became part of the Florance family when he married Irene. First running the cattle scales in Gainesville for his father-in-law, he would later start and operate several businesses in Gainesville. Vernon Wood’s first commercial venture was acquiring the Cave’s store, which he purchased in 1938 with a $2,000 loan from R. H. Florance. “One of the stories my father would tell was that he had a year to pay off the loan, but did so well that he paid it off in three months,” recalled Vernon’s son Robert Wood, a retired engineer and international businessman now living in Huntsville, Ala. “When he gave his father-in-law the money, he looked at it, counted it, and said, ‘Well, I’ll be damned!’ He thought my 10

interesting challenge to the county school system, since many of the Amatucci family spoke little to no English,” Roy continued. “They had children in their late teens sitting in first through seventh grade in the elementary school at Haymarket. There was no English as a Second Language capability here back then.” “I remember Tom’s house,” added Robert Wood. “It was very large, and my father and I would often come there for a meal, which was always delicious.”

Sam’s Junkyard Another man whose business influenced Gainesville for many years was Sam Jones (1921-2001), who worked for the telephone company in Washington, D.C. before coming to Gainesville in the mid-1930s.

Because Robert liked mechanics and was very good at figuring things out, he worked at A-1 Motors while he was in high school. “I had my driver’s license then, and could drive the tow truck,” he recalled

Mr. Jones owned a 35-acre farm southwest of the town, and managed A-1 Auto after Robert Wood left for college. Thinking he could do better on his own, he opened Sam’s Junkyard on his farm property in 1938. A quarry was operated on the site in the 1960s as well.

When Lee Highway was four-laned through Gainesville in the early 1950s, the front of the Barter Post property was taken, and the building torn down. The business operated out of a smaller building that the family owned on Wellington Road until 1954, when a new, 7,700 square foot store was built off the highway near the original site.

Over the years, Mr. Jones added more acreage to the property, but had problems with Prince William County officials over the junkyard, which was considered by some to be an eyesore, and a threat to the local groundwater. But having been in existence for so long, the junkyard was “grandfathered” into the county zoning.

Vernon Wood eventually retired from the business, and his son and partner, Emory B. Wood (1945-2008) ran the Barter Post until it closed in 1989 and was later demolished to make way for a road into a proposed development. After the doors closed, remaining stock was taken to Manassas and sold by Laws Auction House.

Mr. Jones fought a number of lawsuits demanding that the junkyard be closed, but represented in court by Manassas attorney Turner Smith Sr., he always won, and the junkyard remained.

In 1994, Emory opened a store in Culpeper. “The reason Emory was such a good salesman was that he liked to talk, and when he ran out of the truth, he kept on talking,” recalled Robert Wood with a chuckle.

However, in April 1999, vandals set fire to the yard, causing a local emergency that lasted for twelve days before the smoke cleared. State, federal and local agencies rapid change continued on page 14

Involved in his community, Vernon Wood was a charter member of the board of directors of Prince William County Hospital in Manassas. When he resigned from the board, he was made a life member, and occasionally attended meetings. He also served as a Justice of the Peace in Gainesville for a time. One of Vernon Wood’s close friends was Thomas M. Amatucci (1922-2004), a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and Washington-area Chrysler dealer. “Our Dad probably met Tom through his job with the DMV,” recalled Robert’s brother Roy Wood, who lives in Indio, Ca. “After the war, Tom rounded up all of his family in Italy, and chartered a boat to bring them to America. They lived in a hotel-like building on his farm behind the VDOT Area Headquarters on Lee Highway.” Many of these immigrants chose to remain in the area, at least until they were ready to move on. “This presented an 12

The Barter Post on Lee Highway was an antique and used furniture business owned by Vernon Wood. This is a photograph taken in 1963 of the second structure built on the site. The business closed in 1989. Courtesy of Mrs. Rosia Wood. rapid change continued from page 12

became involved, and Mr. Jones was fined $282,900 by the Department of Environmental Quality and $40,000 by Prince William County for the fire and the illegal storage of 35,000 cubic yards of construction debris. The unburned portion of the debris – about 20,000 yards – was what had to be removed. Sam’s Junkyard was in the process of paying off the fines and dealing with the clean up when Mr. Jones died in January 2001. The junkyard closed, but the cleanup work continued until it was completed. The 66-acre property was eventually cleared of junk and environmentally restored, and is now owned in multiple parcels by Vistas at Lake Manassas, a private investment group. Today, there are clean businesses operating on the site, including Sam’s Junkyard Outdoor Storage (which is not a junkyard) and Remington Mulch Co.

It is believed that John Sweeney also built the main house on the Harrison property, which was described as “…similar to, though smaller than and not quite as elaborate as Hillcrest.” Another building on the Gardner property was the old Methodist Parsonage (VHLC file No. 76-194) a frame-onstone building built around 1900. It was replaced by a new parsonage located on property on Linton Hall Road donated by Vernon Wood, and built by Dave Boger in 1955. The old parsonage was acquired by the Gardners, and served as the Gainesville Mobile Home Park sales office for several years. It was demolished in 2010. rapid change continued on page 16

Hillwood Carl Gardner moved his family to Gainesville in 1946, living at Hillcrest Farm, a 100-acre property that they re-named Hillwood. The main house was built in 1903 by John Sweeney Sr., and according to the 1979 VHLC survey, “The U.S. Army had a mule training camp on this property during World War I, and to supply the animals with water, a 550-ft. well was dug. The well, it is said, later provided water for neighboring farms in the area in times of drought.” Mr. Gardner operated the farm, and with his sons Charles and Carl M. “Mickey” Gardner opened Hillwood Mobile Home Park in 1958, and started a recreational vehicle (RV) and mobile home business in 1964. They expanded their land holdings by about 20 acres in the mid-1960s, when they purchased the old Fannie Harrison estate just next door, to the west. Mrs. Harrison (1863-1950) was a long-time resident of Gainesville, and had owned the property since 1925. The old house was later torn down. 14

Growing up in Gainesville, Robert Wood has many memories of his father’s businesses and many friendships. He is shown standing at the entrance to Virginia Oaks, where the Barter Post once stood.

rapid change continued from page 14

Remarkably, most of the original land has remained in the Gardner family, while commercial development has sprung up all around it. The Fanny Harrison house and the old parsonage are gone, but the main house at Hillwood stands, a striking reminder of Gainesville’s past. Lakeview In the mid-1950s, development of the Lakeview subdivision by “Buster” Florance and Kennard C. Bolt along Linton Hall Road to Lakeview Drive brought new residential property to Gainesville. More property was developed in the late 1950s when Huron Drive north of Lakeview was added, and a third phase opened in 1962-63 with the extension of Huron Drive and Erie Court. The subdivision was built-out in the late 1960s with the houses on the west side of the lake.

Signs of Things to Come “The real surge of growth didn’t come then, but we were getting indications of it,” noted Robert Wood. “We used to say, ‘Where’s Gainesville? The corporate limits are on either side of the signpost!’ But if any of us had been more into the big picture, we would have been able to figure it out.” Large-scale development started when the Hazel-Petersen Cos. began buying up the property south of Lee Highway in the early 1980s. “Basically, they came in and offered just about any money you wanted for your property,” recalled Robert Wood. “We realized then that we were in an exploding real estate market.”

Eventually, all of the Florance property was sold, and the house torn down in favor of the old Atlas Iron Works, now the site of the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center. “My grandfather once had 1,000 acres in contiguous farmland,” recalled Robert Wood. “Today, not even a square inch is left of it.” Robert Wood’s daughter, Cindy Hontz, lives in the Waterfall area. She remembers the old Florance homeplace, and the farm that was there before the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center. She recalls talking with friends while shopping there. “They asked where my family’s old farm was, and I told them, ‘You’re standing there!’” Nearly all of the original structures that made up “Old Gainesville” are gone, and with the re-routing of Linton Hall Road and Galleher Road and the erection of the new overpasses, even the old sites are difficult, if not impossible to locate. Gainesville has witnessed many changes, and more are coming. The completion of the highway project and new business openings along Linton Hall Road and Route 55/I-66 promise a renewed quality of life in Gainesville – making it a lot different from the “…little hamlet made up of a filling station, a handful of houses, and a few stores,” described in the often-quoted 1941 Works Projects Administration’s (WPA) Writers Program.

PLASTIC SURGERY ANTI-AGING SECRETS Robert F. Centeno M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Novant Health 703-530-WELL Free physician referral

As a board certified Plastic Surgeon, patients often ask me what I think they need done. I typically respond that they don’t “need” anything, but how can I help? They also ask “What have you had done?” or “What would you recommend for a family member?” These questions crystallize the challenge that patients have when trying to make informed decisions about improving their appearance with a cosmetic treatment. Ironically, they are also a standard that many Aesthetic Surgeons use to guide clinical recommendations. Many of us are drawn to the specialty because of its ability to consistently deliver meaningful improvements in quality of life to our patients. By and large, we do not recommend treatments that we would not recommend for our own family members. 22

Research has documented significant improvements in quality of life, body image and self-esteem from cosmetic surgery treatments. From an ethical standpoint, it is appropriate to recommend a cosmetic treatment with objective benefit. It is the ultimate expression of autonomy and selfdetermination for a patient to research a treatment, to pre-qualify a provider, and to invest their hard earned dollars in improving their appearance. The decision to pursue an aesthetic treatment is entirely personal and driven by patient desire. If it is done to satisfy the patient’s internal drive to improve an objective physical feature, the chances of success are very high. The rapid pace of technological development is making cosmetic treatments more available to a wider

spectrum of patients. This trend makes decisions regarding surgery, nonsurgical treatments, skin care or laser treatments that much more difficult for the lay person. From a Plastic Surgery perspective, the adage that “an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure” certainly holds. Medical grade skincare for the prevention and correction of sun damage is an affordable option available to all. Topical Tretinoin nightly and daily SPF 30 sunscreen are two of the most powerful anti-aging treatments available. Prescription strength exfoliators, antioxidants, bleaching creams, and newer biopeptide creams can be added for specific problems. Avoiding the three “S’s”… Sun, Smoke & Stress through exercise, proper nutrition and contemplative relaxation are also very beneficial. Neuromodulators such as Dysport™, Botox™ or Xeomin™ to relax facial lines are also useful to prevent worsening of the signs of facial aging. Injectable Fillers or Fat are also very helpful to correct facial grooves and the volume loss of early aging. No downtime treatments including ForeverYoungBBL™ intense pulse light treatments for preservation of skin texture/tone and Ultherapy™ for non-surgical skin tightening are also very helpful. MicroLaserPeels™, light superficial laser peels

with low downtime, are very effective in re-freshing sun damaged skin with minimal downtime. Ultimately, some of the newer non-surgical body contouring options available will help with those unwanted pounds or loose body skin. At this point few non-surgical body treatments can compare to the value proposition of laser lipolysis and cellulite treatments. ProLipo Plus™ & CelluSmooth™ deliver almost immediate results with less downtime than traditional techniques. Patients can often return to work or social activities in 1-5 days even though they have had a procedure. These are all factors important to the average patient, whether a busy professional, retiree or “stay-a-home-mom.” So when asked, “What have you had done?” I am happy to share that I have used all of the aforementioned treatments at some point on myself or a family member. Prevention should be the first choice in anti-aging, but in certain instances surgical options represent the best choice for patients or family members. I do not have reservations about recommending surgical procedures such as facelifts, brow lifts, eyelid lifts, rhinoplasty, tummy tucks, liposuction or breast augmentation/reduction. These are also very effective treatments that we perform on family members regularly.

Shape Up Your Golf Game By Ron Stringfellow

The fairways are groomed, the putting greens are smooth and the tee boxes are set. Your favorite golf course is ready for another great golf season; but is your golf game up to par? Shape up for this year’s golf season with the following exercise tips to improve your fitness level and your game as you shoot for a season full of birdies and eagles!

Train Like An Athlete

The primary goal of training for athletes is to prevent injury, followed by improving performance. If you’re injured you can’t practice, you can’t play and you can’t make your game better. I believe that the first step of an athlete’s training program should be a personalized fitness assessment that tests range of motion, strength and flexibility. If you don’t have an established baseline to work from, then you won’t have a clear direction toward accomplishing your golf fitness goals this summer. “Golfers are athletes, so they should train like athletes,” says Ron. “You have to get fit to play, not play to get fit.”

Turn Up Cardio Conditioning

If you want to talk like the pros, then you have to walk like the pros. Since the PGA requires golfers to walk all 18 holes of the golf course during its tournaments, fit players need to focus on increasing cardiovascular fitness levels in the off season with exercises that are performed while standing up. “Golf is an expanding, explosive sport. So you need to train as functionally and effectively as possible,” Ron says. “This means that as much of your training exercises need to be done on your feet as possible and the training movements need to be as explosive and dynamic as possible.” Increasing your cardio and metabolic conditioning, though, doesn’t mean that you have to log double digits of running or walking miles each week. Instead, Ron suggests adding exercises into your fitness routine that mimic the explosive and repetitive nature of golf. Adding a circuit of sled pushing and pulling, battling ropes and medicine ball slams into your workout will not only help increase your overall fitness level, but prepare your body for a summer of powerful tee drives and strong golf swings. shape up continued on page 26 24

Build Total Body Strength, Power and Stability The golfer’s swing is one of the most critiqued movements of the game. If you only focus on strengthening the upper body portion of your swing, though, you miss out on a critical part of your golf game. “The swing is such an explosive total body movement,” Ron says. “You have to be able to control the forces of the swing or you’ll end up spending most of your time looking for your ball in the trees or, ultimately, injuring yourself.” The power of your golf swing comes from total body strength that starts with strong, explosive and flexible legs followed by strong back, shoulder and neck muscles and ending with powerful biceps, triceps and forearms to finish the swing. You can hit all of the key muscle groups in your body by adding total body strength and power training moves into your workout. Some total body movements for golfers include kettlebell swings, shoulder press squats, medicine ball throws and medicine ball lunges with a twist. Holding regular plank, side plank and Superman positions for one minute in duration for three or four repetitions at a time also are excellent exercises for building strong core and back muscles to stabilize your body, which can help you crush the ball off the tee and drive it down the fairway.

Stretch It Out

A limber, flexible body is an integral part to every golfer’s game. It’s important to stretch after hitting the greens to recover your muscles and prepare them for the next round. It’s also a good idea to stretch prior to teeing off to loosen tight muscles and prepare them for the torque and repetitive motion of a golf swing. Before you head out to the greens, warm up your lower and upper body muscles with dynamic stretches such as walking lunges, moving toe touches and foam rolling. After your golf game, static stretches at the course followed by foam rolling and even regular massage will help relax your tired muscles and prepare your mind and body for the next golf outing on your summer roster. As you prepare for a summer of walking down sun-drenched fairways, it’s important to focus on your body’s fitness level for the physical wear and tear of the golf season. By incorporating these four tips into your workout routine, you’ll be on your way to getting the most out of every day on the links. Also be certain to stay properly fueled and hydrated during your 18 hole adventure. You should have 64 to 96 ounces per day! To Your good Health.

Customer Service is the New Marketing CREATE RAVING FANS WITH THESE “9 RULES” Today’s marketing is about delighting customers who recommend your business to their friends. Implement these 9 customer service concepts and your customers will do your marketing and promotion for you. #1 - Deliver on your promises - Customers hate surprises. Be upfront about what to expect even if it means losing the work to a competitor. You’ll sleep better and in the end have more customers anyway. #2 - Choose Great Customers - Avoid the “big” deal when your instinct is a client will be difficult to work with. They’ll use up your resources and won’t be happy in the end. Meantime, your good clients will have suffered. #3 - Check your website and your invoice - These are the first and last impressions you make on your customer. Make sure visitors can quickly find answers to questions on your website. Optimize your website so it can be read on a mobile device. Write your invoice so it is easy to understand and matches your offer.

#4 - Always say “Yes!” Customers expect a business to listen to and accommodate special requests. Say Yes, then explain their options. This is the essence of customer service - getting the job done and making your customer look like a hero. #5 - Service your Customer’s Customer - A customer doesn’t buy a toaster, he buys the toasted bread. Be a partner in your customer’s business. Help him make his customers happy and he’ll reward you with more business. #6 - Handle Complaints, Quickly - When a problem is responded to in a few hours, customer satisfaction goes up! If you wait 24 hours or more, satisfaction goes down, even when 100% resolved. What customers want is to know you listen and care. Respond quickly - with empathy.

#7 - Protect your online reputation - Give clients a way to complain on your website first. Assign a monitor who can respond right away. Use Google Alerts or services that crawl the web to notify you of public comments. #8 -Follow-up after delivery - Mary Kay has a program called “2 days, 2 weeks and 2 months.” It says “Thank You” and “How did we do?” sincerely without asking for more business. Also consider inexpensive automated surveys like Survey Monkey for feedback. #9 - Remember Lifetime Value - It’s natural to want to push back on complaints. Consider the “lifetime value” of the relationship. By stepping back it’s easier to justify fixing the problem and satisfying the customer.

Conclusion: Walt Disney may have said it best: “Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and again and bring their friends.” Pat Ennis is the Regional Manager at American Solutions for Business in Nokesville. American Solutions helps businesses build their brand and get more customers with promotional products, embroidered apparel, mobile websites and email marketing. Pat is a Speaker and co-author of “Business Success With Ease” due out in December. Book time with Pat at 703-753-3733 or pat@asb-va.com. 28

Spirits EXIT Heritage Realty

www.EXITHERITAGE.com The Wine: Summer Lea is a slightly sweet traditional mead made from wildflower honey from Blacksnake Meadery’s beehives in Southwest Virginia. All of Blacksnake’s traditional meads are made by fermenting honey diluted with mountain well water. In Summer Lea, wildflower honey is diluted to produce a finished mead with 2% residual sugar and 13% alcohol by volume. The relatively low sugar content and aging in stainless steel allow the characters of the flowers that went into the honey to come through in the mead.

The Meadery: Blacksnake Meadery is one of few Virginia wineries dedicated to mead, the world’s oldest fermented beverage. The proprietors of this small family business take pride in carrying out the meadmaking process “from bee to bottle.” Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blacksnake Meadery is near the quaint town of Floyd, The Crooked Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Tastes of up to 10 varieties of mead are offered on the Sippin’ Porch on Saturdays and Sundays, 11-5, May through October.

“A bright, pale mead, Summer Lea greets you with a bouquet of wildflowers. A sweetness up front blends into herbal and citrus flavors, with a distinct grapefruit finish. As the mead matures, it develops notes of nuts and molasses.”
