Haymarket, Everyone’s Hometown An Update From Mayor Leake Haymarket, Everyone’s Hometown; this was the selected tagline by the Town Council during our retreat in the fall of 2014 in the creation of our Strategic Action Plan. Since its adoption in December of 2014, the Council and staff have been working diligently on trying to make this plan a reality. Granted, some strategic goals take longer than others, but in a little over 6 months, Council has had the ability to accomplish a lot, but this is only the beginning. Two of the most industrious projects that the Council is currently working on are the Town Center redevelopment and the Harrover Master Plan. The Town is moving forward with the Town Center Redevelopment at the intersection of Washington and Jefferson Street. The Town Center is the former

6

location of Gossom’s Grocery Store and Hardware Store and the Old Post Office and Pharmacy. The Town Council of 2012-2014 moved forward with the creation of a Town Center Master Plan which yielded a long term vision for the site, as it was currently being utilized. The current Council ultimately decided to design the Town Center site as one unified Government Center. The long term vision for the Town Center site is to create a centralized Town Green that can be utilized by residents as a small venue for smaller Town or public events and could be used for passive recreation. The main building will be transformed into a local government center. The Council envisions some regional government entities as part of the tenants and intends to utilize the lower floor for all Town Administrative needs, including the Police Department. When the Council made the decision to start pursuing this direction, it approached the new direction with the understanding and full intent to honor all of their existing lease agreements with tenants. In the spring of 2015, the long time tenant and owner of The Very Thing decided that it was time to move on from the business. The Town truly appreciated the business that Mrs. Doris Buck had brought to the Town and hated to see the stalwart business close its doors in Town. However, with this news brought new opportunities, and the Town will move forward with its plans to create new local government offices on the lower floor of the two story complex. The architecture and demolition have already begun and concepts should be coming to the Council in the fall of 2015. The outlying buildings will remain in place and are being worked into the long term plan of the Town Center and are currently occupied by “The Very Thing for Her” in the Hullfish House and “Washington Street Realty” in the Old Post Office. The building in the back left corner of the property currently houses the Haymarket Police Department and no determinations have been made with regard to the long term use of that building. The Council is also busy working on a Master Plan for the Town’s Harrover Property which currently houses the

Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, who currently rents one of the two 1920s craftsman style houses and the other house is currently vacant and formerly the Haymarket Police Department. This property has been envisioned as serving a public use. The Master Plan, which is not completed as of yet, is proposing the development of pavilions, playgrounds, trails and other passive recreation and potentially a large multi-use pavilion that could serve as a concert venue, ice skating rink, farmers market and many other any other uses. In July, the Town is having our landscaping contractor move forward with a cleanup effort that will remove overgrown brush, low hanging tree limbs and shaping up healthy bushes. In the fall of 2015, Council will be adopting the Harrover Master Plan. “Everyone’s Hometown”, sounds nice. This is a concept that we are striving to create for all residents and even neighboring residents that call the outlying areas of the Town, their home. These are two significant projects, but they are essential projects that establish a new direction for the Town. It demonstrates who this Town is and the importance of our public facilities is to use and create a sense of pride within our community. These renovation projects are long overdue and it is the goal that these projects would spur additional renovation projects of surrounding properties. Furthermore, the Council cannot stop there. It is the intent of the Council to begin working more directly with our local businesses and local property owners. By creating the position of the Main Street Coordinator, we are already beginning to reach businesses in ways that we had never had before. We are listening to our businesses and we are working on some innovative methods to address some of their concerns. Furthermore, we are beginning to look into ways that we can better engage citizen participation. Although our goal was to create a tagline that is catchy, we also see value in having citizens embrace Haymarket as their Hometown. Sincerely, Mayor, David M. Leake Haymarket Lifestyle

HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT

& CONSERVATION EFFORTS Inside & Out By Debbie Eisele

Mike Rolband, Vice President of Operations and Kelly Petrey, Senior Associate Engineer

Our region continues to go ‘green’. For some, it is recycling, for others they walk or bike to work, or incorporate rain barrels into their landscape. No matter what the efforts are, there are amazing choices the community is making on a daily basis to help sustain or improve our environment. One local business truly stands out in its sustainability efforts. Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) is one of the “greenest” businesses around our area and a leader in green building in the Commonwealth. The WSSI office structure is a solid testament to how new buildings can be incredibly beautiful, functional and have a very low impact on the environment. WSSI not only talks about sustainability, they act on methods to assist in low-impact development (LID). Plus, the WSSI’s office is the first LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified facility in Virginia. According to WSSI, this building “is 10

one of the Commonwealth’s ‘greenest’ buildings. The site is situated on 5.18 acres, including 1.75 acres of forested open space. Although the office was designed and built in 2005, WSSI adds new features annually to help keep the building on the cutting edge of sustainable design.” From solar panels on the top roof, to conservation of energy and natural resources, WSSI is definitely a “lead by example” organization. Michael S. Rolband, Vice President of Operations and Kelly Petrey, Senior Associate Engineer, of WSSI spent time discussing the building and their services and also granted me a tour. Throughout the entire building special lighting was installed. “The lights have built-in sensors that not only sense when people are in the room and automatically turn on, but they also will only turn on a portion of the light based upon how much daylight is available in the room,” Kelly explained. “Fluorescent lights and parabolic reflective fixtures (where lights are pointed upward and reflect off

the ceilings to generate more light) save energy throughout the building as well,” Petrey pointed out. Large and operational windows are also installed throughout the building that allow a significant amount of natural light and ventilation. Solar panels installed on the section of the roof that receives the most sun, began producing power for the building in 2011. Each panel has the capacity to produce 185 Watts of power and when it was installed, it was the largest solar photovoltaic system in Virginia. According to WSSI publications “this investment provides nearly 20% of their 640,000kWh annual demand.” Another section of the tour enable me to experience another “green” initiative they have implemented into the design of the building and it truly was inspiring. On the roof, there was a pathway constructed of permeable pavers (designed to allow water to flow through them, not run-off) and it led to a table and chairs in one direction and to a comfortable bench in the Haymarket Lifestyle

opposite direction. Surrounding the walkway there were native plants in bloom and ones about to bloom. There were slight variations to the topography and it felt as if you were on a tiny knoll planted with incredible vegetation to appease your sense of sight and smell. “There are two types of green rooftop designs that can be constructed. The first is an extensive green roof that has shallow soil and little organic matter. The second is an intensive green roof that has deeper soil and more organic matter to sustain a wider variety of species. Our roof contains a mix of intensive and extensive designs and even includes two wetland pods,” explained Rolband. “The two pods are constructed of an impermeable pond liner, organic soil and wetland plants. For this area moisture sensors and drip irrigation lines ensure the pods stay moist.” The beauty of this particular roof isn’t only in looks, but in its functionality. “Four inch (4”) roof drains convey runoff from the roof to the exterior cistern for irrigation, and the green roof provides

Internal cistern

12

additional insulation for the one-story building extension. Now that the plants are mature, we only need to irrigate the wetland pods, and all the plants are thriving,” said Mike. Typical rooftop temperatures are much hotter than the air temperature, but as Rolband explained their roof is typically “cooler than a traditional roof. It also improves habitat, air quality and water runoff.” After leaving the beautiful rooftop garden, I was taken to a room where an interior cistern was installed during the construction of the building. “WSSI uses 70% less potable water than a typical office building of the same size. We have about 100 employees and this cistern provides all the water to flush the toilets in the building.” When asked if it ever ran dry Rolband stated, “There was only one time the cistern became very low and that was several years ago in the summer when it was dry, but we never ran out of water.” Typically they have more water than required for the building’s needs and overflow is diverted to an exterior cistern.“ The interior cistern collects and stores water from only half of the roof,” explained Mike. “It is connected to two of the roof’s 5 downspouts and holds 4,000 gallons of water.” The water is not potable, so it was designed to run through a separate pipe network within the building and

is not mixed with the drinking water. The exterior cistern holds 8,000 gallons of water and is used to irrigate the turf and plants around the exterior of the building. This conservation effort offers a very efficient irrigation system by utilizing water nature provides. “Since all the landscaping is comprised of mature native vegetation now, it doesn’t require us to water much. Nature takes care of most of its

Demonstration of permeable concrete

watering needs,” explained Rolband. “In the event of large storms, this cistern is also designed to direct the overflow of water to the site’s rain garden via an underdrain network.” Pavers, gravel, concrete and asphalt all have a purpose on site that is not related to walking, driving or parking. All the materials in the back area of the complex and walkways throughout the property are permeable, allowing water to enter the ground beneath, instead of causing run-off. “Let’s have a demonstration,” said Kelly Petrey. She emptied a bucket of water onto both the concrete and asphalt surfaces. “On Haymarket Lifestyle

traditional asphalt or concrete, the water will run-off, but here the water soaks into the material,” she explained. The rain garden, also known as a bioretention basin, is a landscape feature that assists with stormwater management. Rain gardens are beneficial because they provide a destination for stormwater to collect and briefly be held, instead of running directly into storm drains or streams. This allows natural filtering, decreases the amount of water flowing into the streams that lessen and assist in the natural process of evaporation and plants absorbing the water for their own use. The soil in this garden is very precise. “It is composed of sand, organic leaf mulch and onsite topsoil,” said Mike. “The percentage of each ingredient used in the soil composition is very important for the proper growth of plants and to prevent mosquitoes from becoming an issue.” Petrey described how their exterior design maintains low impact on nature, “Through a series of small stormwater management practices that mimic the function of a forest we are able to produce a water runoff process, similar to what nature offers. Water evaporates, is absorbed and is filtered by vegetation and soil.” The flow path on the property provides water detention within a gravel substrate. Water is held by dams that are porous and in ponding areas that decrease the rate of flow from the site. The results allow for greater stream stability, with less sediment going into them. Additionally, native habitat is secure and less erosion occurs. Throughout my visit, I was struck with how concerned WSSI is for not only the preservation of natural resources, but the overall welfare of its staff. Employees not only enjoy the green technology, but are afforded other “perks” as well. Daily group workout sessions are offered in a very large training room with all the equipment you would find in a commercial gym. Additionally, staff members are able to bring their dogs to work. Three friendly dogs even accompanied us during the tour. An onsite kennel and outdoor pens are available for employees to use and staff members all pitch in and keep the area extremely clean for all the canine companions. There are even trails on the property staff and their four-legged companions may utilize for walks or runs. Wetland Studies & Solutions, Inc. was established in 1991 and joined The Davey Tree Expert Company in April of 2014. WSSI shares their knowledge and experience with the public. They offer hands-on workshops through CivilTraining, LLC and during the summer they sponsor a Wetlands Boot Camp at their Gainesville office. The full day workshops provide teachers (K-12), environmental educators and program directors information and tools on how to incorporate environmental education programs within the local school systems.

ARTS &Entertainment

THE CREATOR OF THE

TECHNO-IMPRESSIONIST MOVEMENT Tony Karp, The Man Behind The Art By Debbie Eisele

Tony Karp and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Haymarket from New York in 2004. They love Haymarket and said, “We moved here because it so incredibly beautiful and people are so nice. It’s clean, without trash littering the roads or sidewalks and it’s even a place where you can have political discussions politely.” When I arrived for our meeting, I was greeted not only by the very outgoing duo, but amazing pieces of art. Marilyn and Tony both eagerly shared Tony’s story, one I thought would revolve around just art, but I was wrong. The information behind Tony’s career is filled with so many interesting facts beyond his art. The Techno-Impressionist art movement was created in the 1990s by Tony Karp. The art is photography based, with a different approach. Technology is used as a tool to create unique pieces of work from the photograph. This movement was established to honor the first impressionist artists and show that impressionism is alive and part of the technologic movement of the 21st Century. “When I was 16 years old, I began to work, and I am 76 years old now,” proudly declared Tony. “I wasn’t always a photographer either. I started as a one, joined the Army, and then worked with computers before most people knew

16

what they were.” Karp was born in Illinois, and moved to New York when he became a teenager. When he was 16, he designed and built a Geiger counter and sold an article on how to build it to Mechanix Illustrated. His photo shoots led him to NBC, where he photographed Gene Kelly and other famous actors of that era. Life magazine utilized several of his photographs in their publication over the years. Duke Ellington, Prince Phillip and more recently, President Obama are also some of the famous subjects he had the honor of photographing. His career morphed into the new and inventive and away from strictly photography. “I was always wanting to find solutions to the complex problems,” he simply said. Karp even created a computer-controlled zoom lens used to shoot the opening scene of The Godfather. This was the first piece of equipment that utilized batteries (for up to 15 hours) and was made specifically for making motion picture films. Humble, is the word to describe Karp. When we met he did not even mention he was nominated for an Academy Award for this achievement. Karp put his photography career on hold and went into the Army. He served in Korea, specifically in the DMZ. While there, he continued taking photos but became so passionate about technology. When he finished serving his

When asked how he came to create techno-impressionist art he said, “I like to take big map images and transform them into postscript images. I will make shapes filled with color, but no shading. I love to build and make things - it’s a challenge. My friend told me that the trouble with my art is that I don’t have a style,” he laughed. “I don’t want a style. I don’t want to be spocked!” When asked who is favorite artist was he answered, “I don’t have one, I have three. Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.” These famous artists were all involved in the first impressionist art movement and Tony finds their techniques an inspiration for his work. Karp’s art is not static nor boring. When you peruse his work, one can see that anything and everything can truly become

18

art. From images of wildlife, children to statues - he uses his technological mind and tools to create impressive compositions. He feels the secret of his success is that he has never been “famous”. I asked him what he saw himself working on 5 years from now, “I have no idea. I won’t predict, because it depends on the ideas I have - it could be anything!” His wife, Marilyn, was quick to point out that if a computer program doesn’t do what he wants it to “he creates his own code and makes a program that will”. When asked what advice he would give to aspiring artists he said, “My advice is to be yourself and don’t be afraid. Many artists are told what they are good with and don’t stray from that genre. Don’t be afraid. Follow your own heart and spirit; it’ll be best.” He follows his own advice everyday and his art ranges from photography to technology to writing. His ultimate goal is to “make as much art as possible and have it be seen and experienced by as many as possible.” His latest “project” is to assist in making art (of all kinds, not just his) immortal. Creating online art museums

where everyone has access to art and is able to view it “up close” is important to him. “When artists die, that’s when they become famous and also forgotten over time - with the exception of a few,” Tony stated. “My goal is to not just let the private collectors and museums have all the art. Artists can create their own ‘MOO’ - stands for Museum of One’s Own. I keep trying new forms of the online museum because I want people to have access to art and study it. Technology is evolving and will enable this to happen,” he explained. “Art of the future will be technologically based in terms of viewing and creating.” Marilyn Karp is biggest supporter and is just as passionate as Tony is about telling his story, “He has always solved impossible problems in his tech career; it allows him to do things others wouldn’t know is possible. That’s what makes him unique as an artist. Tony shoots whatever is in front of him. Because he uses technology, art is everywhere. The tools he uses on the computer is like watching a sculptor using tools to sculpt. You cannot separate the art and technology components. It is all one form of art.” Community involvement is

important to the Karp’s and Marilyn is part of the Women League of Voters and was secretary of the HGBA when she first moved here. Marilyn even helped organize the first Earth Day celebration in Haymarket. “We have donated art to the local Red Cross, Evening Under The Stars (Warrenton) and we even conducted a program for S.A.C.C. in Fairfax. We want to love the community and I am involved with voter registration in our area,” says Marilyn. “We have worked with children by conducting school visits and letting them interact with art. They love using the technology and creating their own art. It is fun to watch their (children’s) enthusiasm.” Marilyn expressed, “In the future, there will be many more artists with technological backgrounds. It will be possible to fully integrate art the two. ‘Computer art’ is a prejudicial term that some critics make. It is the future as more and more generations are using computers to create.” The Karps are avid art supporters and encourage all artists to incorporate science into their art. “I remember when schools stressed the importance of science and art. They are important and go hand-in-hand,” said Tony. Since moving here, Karp’s work has been displayed in 12 different exhibits in Virginia. The Haymarket Town Hall was the location for his first exhibit. His work has also been shown in New York and Paris. Karp also has an Internet presence through a website (www.timeuseum. com), Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and a blog. For anyone interested in viewing or purchasing his art, please visit his website and items can be purchased online or by contacting him directly (tkarp@timuseum.com).

HOW TO HAVE FUN ON A BUDGET $avings Tips That Allow You To Enjoy By Emma Korynta I’ve always been thrifty. Even if I can afford to buy something, I tell myself it’s too expensive. I’ve survived for years on shopping clearance, and let me tell you, it works. Whether it’s during the last few weeks of summer or post your back-to-school blues, it pays to have fun on a budget! When your paycheck comes, I know that you think it’s cause to go buy that $100 outfit or go treat yourself to a night of expensive foods - but be strong! If you’re desperate for retail therapy, head to the clearance rack! Check out end-ofsummer sales to buy your basics for next summer. Bathing suit shopping in the fall or winter can be fun if you let it be! That expensive shirt you have your eye on will definitely be cheaper once the next seasons clothes come in, and it’ll feel so much better when you finally buy it if you know you earned it by waiting.

From one food-lover to (I’m sure) another, you can get just as full on an appetizer from that fancy restaurant as you would on an entire entrée. They’re as much as $10 cheaper, and let’s be honest, you aren’t really going to eat the leftovers from that strange sounding dish you ordered. I’m not saying you should just eat nachos for dinner every time you go out, but a lot of restaurants offer suitable meals in appetizer portions. To make it even better, you may even have enough room and change left over to finally order that dessert! Another savings tip targets one of the things dearest to me: coffee. Coffee may seem like a cheap splurge, but the coffee bills easily add up. The way I see it, there are two simple-ish ways to cut down the cost of your fuel. Either limit your intake, or consider a new order. Can’t get enough of your double shot latte with flavor? Try getting a flavorless American or Iced Coffee and adding flavor powder on your own. The few dimes that you’d

be saving will quickly add up and, before you know it, you’ve covered the price of tomorrow’s coffee! Can’t part ways with your signature drink? You can keep it, but consider limiting your weekly trips to the barista- your wallet will thank you. Still hoping to save some change? Think bigger! Instead of limiting what you spend while you’re out, change where you’re going! Try out activities that are cheaper (or even free) than your usual hangout spots! Instead of going out to see that new movie and splurging on a large popcorn and coke, have a few friends over for a movie marathon! You can provide the movies and snacks yourself, and the chairs will almost definitely be comfier! All of your friends want to go out for dinner? Hit the grocery store and pick up some essentials and throw a little picnic or potluck! If you set your mind to it, you can make any night both affordable and a night for the books. The fact of the matter is you don’t need to break the bank to have a good time. Even the smallest budget change helps more than you think, so put down your wallet and go make the most of your time with the least of your dime!

C a k e Decor a ti n g For A Chil d’ s Pa rt y You Don’t Need to Be An Artist or Pastry Chef - Just Determination By Debbie Eisele

Have you seen those incredibly beautiful birthday cakes at the bakery? Not only do your taste buds know they will be delicious, but you may be a little envious of how beautiful they look. This is what spurred me into action. Why can’t anyone make a cake that looks fun and tastes good? What I discovered is that anyone can - it just may not look quite as good as the professionals’ cake, but good just the same. I love to bake from scratch, but when I don’t have time I rely on my favorite brand of cake mix and even prepackaged icing. These ingredients coupled with a few food “accessories” can create a one-of-a-kind cake your child (and you) will remember. So even if you don’t feel your culinary skills are up to snuff, it’s not as hard as you think. Since I really wanted something unique, I searched the Internet for a concept. Multiple websites showed me decorating wasn’t that hard and not as scary as I thought it would be. The individuals that come up with the ideas are genius! They have completed the hard work and shared the process step-by-step for all of us to follow. My research led to instructions that astounded me with their simplicity. I opted to try baking and decorating a “guitar”. Armed with the list of ingredients and the size baking pans I needed (an 8” and 9” round

22

pan), I went to the store and gathered what I needed. Key ingredients besides the cake mix and icing were fudge dipped wafer cookies, thin pretzel rods, mini marshmallows, thin pretzel rods and food coloring. I didn’t even have to create the list -- it was as if I were using a “Cake Decorating For Dummies Book” in an online format. I baked the cakes in the evening and let them cool overnight. The next day, I followed the instructions from www.Parenting.com (just search Guitar Cake). The challenging step for me was cutting and sliding the cakes to form the guitar. My cakes were not cut perfectly and I wondered if it would be a disaster - it looked like 2 circles smushed together (Photo 1). The next step was to decorate. By mixing the icing with a little food dye, I was able to create something that actually resembled the photograph on the website. The food “accessories” then became my primary focus (marshmallows, pretzels, etc). An amazing transformation took place. Finally, I saw the cakes on my counter were similar to those on the Internet photos. Overall, the cake was a success for me and all the children. After that party, a friend of mine asked if I could recommend someone who baked birthday cakes, and I asked her what she wanted to do. “I really

want to have a cake that looks like a bubble gum machine, but don’t want to pay a lot,” my friend said to me. I of course said, “I’ll do it, but I am no expert.” She agreed and I went to work. Since I had success with the parenting.com site, I searched there and found a great tutorial on a bubble gum cake. For this cake, I used an 8” round and 9” square pan. The accessories also consisted of food dye mixed with icing and candy. I did modify the “accessories” slightly and used what was in my pantry or items I could easily find in the store. It’s amazing how a tootsie roll can transform into the handle of a bubble gum machine and some M&M’s can appear to look like gumballs. Cakes don’t have to be expensive or difficult. With a little research and determination, anyone can create a playful, appealing treat for a kid’s party. Use the knowledge shared by creative bakers and realize the fun is in creating memories. Even if you have some frustrations along the way it will be worth it when you finish. Who knows, maybe you will inspire a future generation of cake artists within your own family.

Change your Mindset -

Change your Life! by Colby Schreckengost

Recently, I was performing a health and fitness evaluation on a 53-year old female (let’s call her Jane) and she was really struggling with some basics. I really liked her from the onset but I could tell by the desperation in her eyes that her health was spiraling down and she needed my help. Life had gotten in the way and she was not taking care of herself. She had gained over 50 pounds in the last couple of years; she had almost completely lost her sense of balance, had very limited mobility, and could barely climb a flight of stairs. Getting up and down off of the floor had become almost impossible. She was faced with one of the biggest challenges of her life! What impressed me most though, was her showing up here. Many people in her situation simply accept that “life is downhill from here,” and they make the mistake of trying to make the best of their circumstances rather than changing them. Once I reviewed her health questionnaire, I began her evaluation with a posture assessment and functional movement screen then finished with her body measurements and analyzed her current nutritional habits. At this point, I had a pretty clear picture of her current physical health and fitness level. But what I really wanted to know more about was her mental and emotional state and what was really keeping her from taking care of herself. I started asking about her family life and support and as we really went deep. She told me, “I’m so down, I’m no use to my kids right now; I can’t even use my body.” When it comes to adult fitness and health it usually comes down to allowing yourself to focus on YOU. I believe that ninety percent of problems can be solved with the correct amount of focus. If you put most of your energy into your career, you will most likely be successful earning a good living. If you spend all of your non-working hours helping your kids be successful, they most likely will. The problem arises when your own health fails due to your lack of attention to it. If your health fails then you can’t support the most important people in your life. This is where my new friend Jane was on the day we met. Every waking moment of her current lifestyle was focused on helping others. It sounds noble and it sounds normal to most parents, especially Moms, but without a healthy YOU, the whole kingdom will crumble. And we’re not talking about the tired, overweight, “barely holding it together” YOU. We’re talking about the healthy, thriving, and 26

energetic, “I really like what I see in the mirror” YOU that you used to be! I can guarantee that if you were to focus on your health for the next 6-12 months; in 1 year you would be a totally different person. As a fitness professional, training has become much more to me than helping a client lose a few pounds for their high school reunion or helping a high school kid get bigger arms or 6-pack abs. It has become a matter of changing lives and restoring my client’s confidence so they

can thrive. We only get one chance at this life and barely getting by is not good enough! But in order to thrive, we must first change our mindset! It’s the most important piece of the puzzle when it comes to making positive changes in anything in life be it your health, career, family, relationships or faith. Mindset: Our collective thoughts that shape how we live our lives and how we approach our goals. Our mindset drives our thoughts. This is your “why” or “your purpose”. The way you want to see yourself, how

you want to look, and what are your priorities? Examples of your thoughts might be: I want to look good in my bathing suit this summer or I want to play better golf or I want to be healthy because I have young children or I just want to be active in my sixties and seventies and to be around to see my daughter get married and have kids. Our thoughts drive our choices. The first step is making a decision to change! If I’m going to be healthy, I have to start moving more and eating less. I need to hire a professional trainer to help me achieve my fitness goals. I should only eat out once per week. Our choices drive our actions. This is the defining moment of your new journey - TAKING ACTION. Today I’m going to move more. I’m going to the gym and working out with my trainer and tonight I’ll walk with my spouse after dinner. I do not eating anything after 7pm. I quit drinking soda and I drank half my bodyweight in ounces of water today. Our actions determine our success. I’ve lost 10 pounds in five weeks making these changes. My new goal is to drop another 10 pounds by September 1st. Because I’m in better shape, my family and I have planned a hiking trip this fall. Most times, we try to convince ourselves that changes are seismic in nature, but when it comes to our health we should think hourly, daily and weekly. Small changes are the ones that really add up. Here are a few examples: • Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water. • Give up empty calorie, high-carb cereals in exchange for real food like eggs or Greek yogurt. • Go for a walk everyday. • Hire a professional trainer (make sure you check their qualifications). • Hit the gym at least 2-3 times per week.

• • • •

Give up bread during the week. Eliminate sugar in your coffee. Only have one dessert per week. Drink alcohol (moderately) only one night per week. Changing your mindset and focusing on your own health instead of everyone else will give you the energy, confidence and happiness to support others around you. Your first step should be to talk to your family and get them to buy-in to your new journey. I bet that they love you and are willing to help!

By the way, after Jane’s evaluation, she entered our semi-private training program and joined our Spring 8-week Fat-Loss Challenge. She’s already lost 19 pounds and 6-inches in her waist. Although it hasn’t been easy, she has a smile on her face every time she comes in for her training session! She changed her mindset and not only is she seeing the benefits, so is her family. Anyone can change their MINDSET and their life!

History

Recalling Haymarket’s first “Piedmont” Prominent absentee ownership dated to Colonial times by John Toler Long before the Piedmont community was established near Haymarket, there was a home of that name that dated back to the late 1700s. Today, the closest landmark to the site is the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad on U.S. 15. The house at Piedmont was described in Prince William, the Story of Its Places and Its People (1941) as “…a low white frame house on a hill in full view of the mountains. A stalwart outside stone chimney tops the east end of the dormer-set gable roof, which extends out to cover a little veranda running the length of the house.” Until the late 20th century, the house at Piedmont stood just to the southwest of the firehouse. But the historic value of the house at Piedmont itself is less significant than the story of the early families that owned it – but never lived there. What became Piedmont was part of the large Bull Run Tract once held by Lewis Burwell, and adjoined the plantation later known as Oakland (See Haymarket Lifestyle, Oct. 2013). The tract amounted to about 1,400 acres, and was purchased by Ralph Wormeley (1715-1790) of Rosegill Plantation in Middlesex County, Va. The property passed to Ralph’s son, James Wormeley (c. 1755-1830), a native Virginian but a British loyalist who went to England prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution. There, James joined the British Army, and became a captain in the Staffordshire Regiment, stationed at Windsor. James was married to Ariana Randolph (1765-1794), the daughter of John Randolph (1728-1784), another loyalist who left Virginia for England before the war. While the loyalist sympathies of these branches of the Wormeley and Randolph families ran deep, it is remarkable that John was the brother Peyton Randolph (1721-1775), the first president of the Continental Congress; and the father of Edmund Randolph (1753-1813), who served as the governor of Virginia from 1786-1788, according to Prince William, the Story of Its Places and Its People. Edmund Randolph was later appointed the first U.S. Attorney General, and the second U.S. Secretary of State. 30

with large chimneys. This burned down, but the main house was saved. There is only one large fireplace in the house, the others having been closed up.” Homer S. Willie bought Piedmont in 1940. Mr. Willie sold the property, then up to 400 acres, to James Long Jr., of Bethesda, Md., who titled the property as Willie Properties Inc. In 1964, Miller & Long, a development company, purchased it and for several years, the open land was used for raising cattle, and the house rented out. The tenants included Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Blackburn, who lived there in the late 1970s. During their tenancy, another survey was done by Frances Jones for the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission in 1979. The property received the designation “76-105.” It was noted in the survey that the first floor rooms had 9 ½ foot ceilings, a large fireplace, four-panel doors and six-over-six windows. There was a center hallway with a winding staircase leading to the two upstairs rooms, which were of unequal height. “The present tenant, Mrs. Blackburn, claims that the house once had a log kitchen wing, which was torn down and replaced with the present one-story kitchen,” according to the VHLC survey. “Mrs. Blackburn said that the present brick and stone chimney on the west end replaced a large stone chimney corresponding to that on the east end.” Outbuildings included a large 20th century livestock barn, machinery barn, and several sheds. Miller & Long donated property on U.S. 15 in front of Piedmont for the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, organized in 1977, and the firehouse was complete and operational the following year. Not long afterward, the old house and outbuildings at Piedmont were demolished, the land cleared, and the Bull Run Country Club was established on the site.

Layout of the first floor, as drawn by architectural historian Frances Jones as part of the 1979 VHLC survey. A kitchen wing was added to the house at Piedmont in the 20th century, said to have replaced a much older log structure.

EVERGREEN VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE A Blend of Balance, Sacrifice, Passion & Personal Fulfillment By Christine Craddock The Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, which sits on Route 15 in North Haymarket, opened its doors on January 17, 1978. On that day, the newspaper headline read “Fire Company Opens Its Doors, Busy Already,” highlighting the work of many people, including the Evergreen Lions Club, to make this facility come to life. Today the station is equipped with 2 engines, 1 tanker, 1 brush truck, 2 command units, 2 ambulances, 1 EMS unit, and 1 utility truck as well as 25 volunteers, 15 firefighters, 10 EMTs, and a full-time volunteer chief and assistant chief to serve the Bull Run Mountain, Catharpin, and Evergreen areas. The volunteers who give their time to the station to help those in need are equipped and trained as equally as paid employees at other stations. Evergreen requested supplemental 24 hour staffing in 2004. This guaranteed that a minimum of two career firefighter/ EMT’s were at the station 24/7, in addition to the four person Monday through Friday crew. All of the career personnel were moved to the 24/7 schedule by 2010. This provides a minimum of four career firefighters/ EMTs at the station at all times. It’s been almost 20 years since Chief Kerrie Logsdon joined the station. As one of the only female volunteer chiefs in Prince William County, she knows all too well the sacrifices it takes to raise a family while pursuing a passion for 36

firefighting and even running a 25-acre farm. A casual visit to the station was all it took for her to get the firefighting itch. She spent her first year in class becoming a Virginia Firefighter 1 and 2. Then while pursuing becoming a paramedic, the chief position became available. As she says, the rest is history. When asked how she balances family life with her 2 eighteen-yearold sons and her work, she explains: “Sometimes the pendulum swings toward the family, sometimes toward the station and occasionally toward work. It’s always a work-in-progress and I don’t think it’s ever quite right, but life is about finding the balance. The boys believe that what I do is important and understand the sacrifices that go with that.” The farm life is how she originally envisioned supporting herself, which now has grown to including boarding horses and teaching riding lessons, along with collecting “quite the menagerie” of animals including 2 goats, 2 miniature donkeys, ducks, chickens, and a few dogs and cats. Chief Logsdon says she truly enjoys helping her community, especially since the people she serves are her neighbors, children’s friends at school, and people she sees every day. There are so many little stories in her memory over the years. One was a “sweet 94 year old who kept apologizing for bothering us when she fell and dislocated her shoulder.” But also, she reflects on the “helplessness when someone’s house was burning and when someone’s child was Haymarket Lifestyle

in an accident.” Even though there are stressful and sad moments, she emphasizes how the volunteers at Evergreen realize their passion for helping others. “These people learned how to help people in their darkest moments and decided that being there for them was a worthwhile and noble career,” she says. GET TO KNOW THE VOLUNTEERS “Volunteers are people just like them. They are individuals who take time away from their families to do this. They are people who struggle with the balance; they care enough to

38

get the balance wrong sometimes and then come back and try again. They do all of that because it’s important, not for the money or the glory,” says Chief Logsdon. And there are so many ways the community can help to support the station and also get to know the volunteers. The public is welcome to set up a tour of the station, which includes rides on the fire trucks, displays of the apparatus and equipment, trying on the firefighter gear, and some helpful fire prevention tips. The station also has a social hall that is available to rent for community events. Those looking to get involved with the station as a volunteer firefighter

or EMT can apply to complete shifts and work towards their certifications. The advantages of the programs are tremendous. Volunteers will be impacting the lives of others in such a positive way, while receiving free training and experience towards a career. Those desiring to help in a way that’s less intensive can help with fund raising, clerical work, and other special projects. Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue is located at 3510 James Madison Highway in Haymarket. To learn more, call 703.754.9097 or go to evergreenvolunteerfireandrescue.org.

ROAD RENAMING IN VINT HILL Elevates the Property’s Commitment to Preserving History and Heritage

Vint Hill, Virginia — Efforts to improve Vint Hill while honoring its rich heritage are taking another step forward, with the introduction of Farm Station Road as the new name for the soon-to-be-renovated and extended Watson Road. The new designation pays tribute to the property’s recent history as Vint Hill Farms Station army base as well as its early years as a horse and cattle farm. The renaming is part of a broader effort to improve the property and its infrastructure. “We’re encouraged by the feedback we are getting from the community about Vint Hill’s progress,” said Ed Moore, president of Vint Hill Village LLC. “While steps like renaming roads to reflect the property’s past may seem small, they are part of a broader vision to help create a place with the right mix of new features and touches that respect its heritage." The new Farm Station Road signs are slated to be installed the week of June 29, 2015. Work on improving the road is scheduled to begin this fall and last 9 months.

Garden Hacks! By Terri Aufmuth

Gardening can be so simple and here are some tips to help you along the way using everyday items you may already have at home. • Use Coffee filters in the bottom of pots to keep soil from flowing out of the drainage holes. The filters will allow water to drain but will save your soil. • Use car wax to lubricate your pruners, loppers, and shears. Easy inexpensive way to keep those tools from binding. • Store your garden tools in pots of sand to keep from rusting. • Use Oatmeal to keep slugs from your plants. Slugs love oatmeal and will devour it. Place in a shallow dish. SAVE YOUR BEER. • Crush eggshells and scatter around plants. The eggshells will add calcium to the soil but also discourage both beetles and slugs from your plants. They don’t like to crawl across the sharp eggshells. • A homemade weed killer- 1 quart vinegar, ¼ cup salt, 2 teaspoons bleach free dishwashing liquid. This will kill weeds, especially when applied during the hottest time of the day. It may only kill the tops or

greens of some weeds, may not kill to the root of perennial weeds. Be careful not to spray on a windy day or on desirable plants. • Sprinkle baking soda around your tomato plants. This will help remove the tartness from your tomatoes. • Don’t like to wear gloves but want to keep your nails clean? Drag your nails across a bar of soap before gardening, when finished, wash hands and nails to remove soap. • Use a hanging shoe rack (cloth) to create a vertical garden, fill shoe slots with soil and plants! Great for growing herbs, lettuce, and other seasonal crops or flowers! • Use ½ a carved out lemon, eggshells, or toilet paper tubes as seed starting containers, simply plant the entire container in the garden when it’s time • A one liter soft drink bottle makes a great sprinkler for a small space. Simply drill holes all over expect

what will be the bottom and attach to a garden hose. Or, use a 1 gallon milk container as a watering can by drilling holes in the cap of the milk jug. Fill with water and pour. • Gutters also make a great smallspace garden option. Attach to a wall or side of the house, drill some holes in the bottom of the gutter and plant! • Epsom salts can help rot a stump. Drill holes at least 8” deep and 3” apart around the perimeter of a stump pour Epsom salts in the holes, water to fill and damped the salts. The salt will pull moisture from the stump and help dry it out. Reapply every 2- 3 weeks as needed. Happy Planting! Hope some of these tips are helpful to you.

HGBA Member Spotlight Business name: Newventur Entertainment, LLC but am really known as Bingo the Clown and partyco-op HGBA Member name: Carol Collins HGBA member since: 9/17/07 Address: Heritage Hunt, 6570 Alderwood Way, Gainesville, VA 20155 Phone: 703 743 2596 Email: info@partyco-op.com Websites: www.partyco-op.com www.livelifewithlaughter.com When and why did you decide to start your own business?

Bingo the clown was born on Halloween 1976 while taking adopted Vietnamese daughter trick or treating with a borrowed costume. Never went back to teaching career after that. When married Malcolm in 1985 in MD , he became a magician and together we started a talent agency, Bingo and Buddies. In 1993 we sold the company and moved to Virginia. After we separated in 2004, I took over our Newventur agency and moved to Gainesville. Currently at 71 years young, I have 3 careers, entertainer mainly as Safari Bingo, agent for about 50 variety acts and my newest as a motivational speaker on “Live Life with Laughter for the Health of It!” How does your business serve the Haymarket-Gainesville community?

Besides doing various charity events, giving discounts to local day cares, I always try to bring smiles to those I meet everyday. I always carry balloons and tiny bottles of bubbles in my purse. When I see a child crying on the street or in a store, I walk by and just blow a bubble. Usually the child gets distracted and stops crying. I then give the mom the bottle saying “Bubbles turn tears to smiles”. Whenever someone helps me or a workman comes to my house, I send them home with balloons for their kids. With my new lecture business, I also hope to bring more stress relieving smiles to as many folks as I can. One of the greatest moments I’ve experienced in my business. ( I had trouble picking one!!!)

Being awarded a Lifetime Citizenship to the Town of Kensington, MD for bringing joy and laughter to the town. At a farewell party for us, all the children added notes and drew pictures on an 8 ft x 5 ft card and a local artist drew Bingo on front. Just recently a 26 year old lady saw me in clown and asked if I was the Bingo that did her 4th birthday! I was and really almost cried when she told me she still had a photo button I gave her and had remembered several things I did at the party!!! Wow nice to be remembered.

Carol Collins - Newventur Entertainment, LLC How have you been involved with HGBA?

I was a speaker at a meeting doing my Live Life With Laughter for the Health of It motivational presentation. I help contribute to and stuff the Haymarket Day goody bags. I try to encourage smiles at the meetings and donate balloon creations for prizes at meetings. Also, I trying to use the services of fellow members. For you, what is the primary benefit of being an HGBA member?

Networking and socializing with local businesses. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Wherever I could find a healthy environment, and friends with positive outlooks. If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and why?

If I could be a superpower, I would empower all people of all races and creeds to learn peaceful ways to settle their conflicts. If you could be famous, what would you want to be known for?

I would like to be known for helping others to smile and feel better about themselves-- to grin and share it! What is your favorite take-out food?

My favorite take out food is Sushi.

Jay DeCianno, Owner

FROM STOUT TO ALES Quattro Goomba Offers Delightful Beer Options By Steve Oviatt Quattro Goomba’s winemaker Jay DeCianno admits he enjoys beer as much as wine but never had the time or patience to make his own. Meanwhile, brewmaster Brandon Flanigin lost patience with his marketing job, loved to make his own beers and shared them with the DeCiannos and the staff during his time behind the counter at the winery. Additionally, DeCiannos’ children kept talking about new beers they enjoyed. When Flanigin quit his job and the building next to the winery became available, DeCianno convinced the other Goombas that a microbrewery could be profitable, allowing Flanigin to turn his hobby into a full-time job. Opening in May, Quattro Goomba’s Brewery succeeded beyond everyone’s wildest dreams. While still experimenting with various types of beers, six have proven to be popular enough to become regular offerings.

Lovers of dry white and sparkling wines will enjoy the Cake Eater, a very light, citrusy brew that pairs well with appetizers, shrimp cocktail or crab cakes. The traditional British IPA, Fanny’s Your Aunt, goes well with seafood, while its American equivalent, Rye Not, pairs wonderfully with beef. Brown Chicken Brown Cow is a brown sugar ale that is rich and complex, with hints of Root Beer. The Friar Nuts brown ale is similar but with hints of banana bread and caramel. Torque is a milk stout that will destroy all your preconceived notions of how a stout should taste with its sweet coffee and chocolate overtones. State law limits beer consumption to specific areas. Wine consumption from the adjacent winery is similarly limited to a separate area. However, picnics, kids and dogs are still welcomed. Fresh pizza is still available and football will be available this fall on the new wide screen TV’s.

Steve Oviatt is President of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association and runs his own consulting business in addition to working for a number of local wineries. Steve Acknowledges that his daughter has taught him everything he knows about wine. He lives in Catharpin with his wife, Nancy. 46
