As we enter the festive holiday season, it’s an honor to share this special time with you. As a local publisher, our focus is telling stories of the unique people, places and institutions that make where we live unique. So, it’s a great privilege to now publish the Lifestyle Magazines, which will continue to follow co-founders Tony and Holly Tedeschi’s goal of building a better community through information. I first came to Warrenton in the 1990s, when an editor at the then Fauquier Times-Democrat took a chance on having a young summer graphics intern. The garage that’s now home to Red Truck Bakery once resuscitated my tired little VW Rabbit. The big story that summer involved another one of our communities, Haymarket. Disney’s America theme park was on the drawing board (and never got off it). Our team’s local roots run far deeper. One of the founders of our company, Walter Nicklin, grew up in what reputedly is the oldest house in Warrenton. Editor Pam Kamphuis, senior editor Debbie Eisele, designer Kara Thorpe and sales representatives Susan Yankaitis and RaeMarie Gulan — along with dozens of talented contributing writers and photographers — will continue to make this magazine a reflection of the great places it serves. Between family, friends and faith, December can feel like a nonstop whirlwind. Thanks for spending time with the holiday issue of your local magazine. Season’s greetings,

& Human Horse A H I STO RY O F PA RT N E R S H I P By Mary Vardi
T
he history of humans’ partnership with horses goes back many centuries. They helped us tame the land, they carried and pulled us across continents and until modern times, fought at our side in battles, great and small. The working horse has faded from the landscape and the competitive and pleasure horse has taken his place. In the last sixty to seventy years a new working horse has come into being. That horse is the therapeutic riding horse. A horse with steady, even steps, a patient, empathetic character and a strong back to carry unsteady and unbalanced riders. Equine assisted activities are any specific center activity, e.g. therapeutic riding mounted or ground activities that are used with special needs children and adults for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs. There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man - WINSTON S. CHURCHILL
Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) certified instructors pair riders with well-trained horses and ponies. The movement of the horse is rhythmical and symmetrical and provides both physical and emotional benefits. An important part of the program is to build self-esteem by teaching effective riding skills so that each rider can progress to independent riding. This organization has a large group of volunteers that help students by providing support while they are engaged in mounted activities. Together with the instructors a team is formed: rider, horse, volunteers and instructor. Important social skills are learned as the team learns to work together. The team at the Center works with a wide variety of special needs including autism, hyperactivity disorders, cognitive delays and various physical challenges, such as individuals who have paralysis, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or have had an amputation. One Rainbow parent said, “Since our family was welcomed into the Rainbow Riding community, we have been blessed beyond our expectations. The staff has been wonderful and the teaching excellent. The majority of riders are children but adults also participate, including active duty military members undergoing rehabilitation at Walter Reed Medical Center. The soldiers, both men and
women, find working with the horses a very positive addition to their recovery process. Horse and soldier, side by side, is a powerful image and Rainbow supports it at no cost to the servicemen and women. Rainbow is planning for the future growth of the center with new and exciting programs. They are planning to start a veterans program for soldiers with ongoing issues that can be addressed after they have separated from the military. The team also wants to bring young women to the center in a program that empowers them to be the best that they can be by building their self-esteem with their equine partners. Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center is at the beginning phase of creating a mental health program that with the help of a horse, will assist those individuals with emotional struggles find peace in a nontraditional setting, with a licensed counselor. The working horse of the past has become the working horse of the present and future in the field of therapeutic riding. At Rainbow, they welcome the participation of our Virginia community as riders, volunteers and as donors to this non profit riding center by the beautiful Silver Lake. For more information on the services provided at Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center please email rainbow@ rainbowriding.org or call (703) 754-6159. â?–

If Not Now, When? By Liba Spyros
J
anuary 1 is the day of new beginnings and resolutions. Would it surprise you to know that only eight percent of people are successful with their New Year’s resolutions? With such a low number, the need to evaluate this disappointing percentage is clear. There is no magic day to start changing habits if the desire is real. Start now, why wait? Look 12 months into the future, and create a vision of what you want to achieve. Awareness is the start to healing. Ask yourself hard questions. Do you really want to get in shape? Are you comfortable where you are? You will need a plan to troubleshoot your areas of weakness. Write your desires down and then brainstorm a path of manageable steps to meet those goals. Formulate a path to reach these goals with smaller intentions. It is important to plan at least a year ahead. If you set unrealistic timeframes, you may become discouraged and give up. Habit patterns take time to shift. It takes 21 days to create a new habit, but 100 days for that new habit to stick. Keep in mind your plan may change along the way, but your end goals should remain the same. Flexibility is important: if you hold your intentions with a steel grip, then any challenges will give you feelings of defeat. The journey itself is a learning process that is valuable in its own right; learn to be resilient and bend with challenges that inevitably come up. The journey to your goals is the true gift of the process. Excuses to avoid working toward your end goal often exist. Life may get away from you and you may
place yourself last on the priority list. Time management issues and other commitments are often used as an excuse for why success is elusive. You need to make yourself and your health a priority. Is your time stretched too thin? Another stumbling block to reaching goals is self-sabotage. Your desire for change isn’t as strong as your comfort with life as you know it. The fear of success may cause excuses to not work on your fitness goals. An accountability partner is critical in achieving success. Usually this partner is not a member of your family or a close friend. The individual should be someone you don’t feel comfortable letting down. Text your partner when you finish your daily action plan, or meet them for a class. Thanks to technology, your accountability partner can even be across the country.
Yoga as a tool to reach your goals
Yoga is a strong physical practice that requires discipline, patience, and commitment. A daily yoga practice
not only creates a strong, subtle, and balanced body, but it will give you the mental skills to achieve a balanced life. If you practice yoga, you will notice that its effects will travel with you off the mat and into the other parts of your life. It teaches stress management and patience, and enables you to be comfortable with silence. With silence comes the ability to listen clearly to your inner thoughts, fears, desires, and dreams. In every yoga practice, there is at least one moment when the mind’s mental chatter lifts, and there is a clear, open state of peace. You will be able to tap into deep pools of strength, resilience, and perseverance, all of which are connected to your physical and spiritual health and happiness. As you read this article and see the new year a short month away, find a moment to plan your goals and intentions for your future. Don’t wait until January 1, because there is no better time than now. Don’t keep putting yourself on the bottom of your own priority list. Start to ask questions, visualize, plan, seek a partner, and watch your dreams unfold. Your relationship with your own physical body and your mind is the most important thing to nurture. If not now, when? You are worth being at the top of your own list. ❖

raindancer tradition was born. Every year—this year will be the fourth—a family is chosen for a special Christmas celebration, complete with carolers. Knight says that in 2015, a family was serenaded by over 200 carolers. This part of the night is uniquely special because it allows for kids and families to be a part of the blessing. Although one family every year is chosen for a special Christmas blessing, other families throughout the year are celebrated with special projects that often can enhance their lives in crucial ways. Recently a raindancer named John was gifted a handicap-accessible bathroom in his home. The project was completed with the help from corporate donors, individual donors, and volunteers. The gift was life changing for little John, who loves his “greatest room ever” because it has allowed him to be independent and excited about life on his own in the future. There are so many other stories about how the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation has provided families with a “moment in time” to be showered in love by their community. “Experience gives you wisdom,” says Knight, and she truly believes that what we learn is meant to be shared with others. That’s part of what makes the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation so

special. When a family of a child with medical or special needs is celebrated by the foundation, it doesn’t end there. “You are stuck with us,” Knight emphasizes, and the goal is for the foundation to be exactly what the families need and for them to know “you are not alone.” When members of a community find out about a family going through medical crisis, they often want to help but don’t know how. But this foundation, led by a mom who has gone through the storm already, can help by fully supporting each person in the family. Knight says that she and other raindancer moms can listen to a family tell their story and glean from it what the family needs without them being able to convey it themselves. A new part of the foundation is the Raindancer Mamas Program, which brings moms together into a sisterhood of support for those who often have no one else in their lives who truly know what they’re going through. Knight says the message of the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation has spread through word of mouth and social media but the mission is kept local so that the relationships can be nurtured for years to come. In the two years since the foundation has been active, over 30 raindancers have been celebrated—all in different ways—and 10 more families are in the

planning process. Knight likens it to an old-fashioned barn raising where neighbors help neighbors, but the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation then makes these families part of their larger family. What they do that is unique is to connect those who want to help and don’t know how to with those who need help and don’t know how to ask for it. For those looking to participate with this important cause, go to sweetjuliagracefoundation.org where details about how to get involved are listed, as well as how to refer a family who needs help. Visitors can also read stories about all the children who are part of the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation and the memorable and unique way their family was helped. “The goodness and love that comes out of it is above and beyond what we can imagine,” says Knight. What an amazing way to honor a little girl with a beautiful soul who continues to inspire people in this world long after she left it. ❖

1943: Christmas in
O
riginally built in 1883, the Haymarket Museum building has served the town as a two-room schoolhouse and town hall at various points in its history. After an electrical fire gutted its interior, the building was restored and opened as a town museum on Haymarket Day in 2002. For the past two years, the Haymarket Museum has presented the town with an exhibit that allows visitors to experience Christmas in a historical setting. 2014 EXHIBIT
“A Haymarket Christmas in 1825” exhibit gave visitors a glimpse into the life of an upper-class country family from the area. A dining table decorated with greenery and faux period food provided a centerpiece for the display, where well-known foods (local carrots, potatoes and peas) shared pride of place with dishes less familiar to a modern audience (such as roasted grouse and decorative jellies). The exhibit showed visitors the sort of finery that would have been present in the home of Haymarket’s founder, William Skinker, during Christmases at his Virginia estate, Green Hill Farm. 2015 EXHIBIT

Last year, the holiday exhibit moved ahead by 25 years, and museum-goers were able to see examples of the rich and diverse Christmas traditions that became popular in the United States thanks to the rising tide of mid-19th century immigrants. Visitors were surprised to learn that something as familiar as a Christmas tree actually had its roots in Germanic traditions, and reached our area during that time period as a result of its popularization by the United Kingdom’s Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Recipes for Christmas desserts, such as figgy pudding and plum pudding, were also popular at the time since they could be adapted to take advantage of local fruits and were prepared well in advance of the holidays. This antebellum display was, however, a picture of life that relatively few families were able

to enjoy due to their lower economic circumstances. 2016 EXHIBIT
The time period of this year’s exhibit, “Christmas in 1943: A Haymarket Holiday,” leaps forward by almost one hundred years, by which time life had changed dramatically in Haymarket and the United States. The focus is on the year 1943. In the intervening years since the era demonstrated in the 2015 exhibit, the United States had been torn in two by its Civil War and survived. Patriotism and duty were at the forefront of civic life as Americans came together to support the Allied troops fighting in World War II. The 1943 exhibit tells the story of a family for whom the war effort has come very close to home; with so many soldiers stationed in the European and Pacific theatres, many families were unable to be together at Christmas. Even our small town sent soldiers to fight in the war, though some of their names have been lost in the years since. By this time, modernized industrial and farming practices had made more goods and products available to more and more American families, but World
War II actually pushed many people back toward a more austere way of life. This is made very clear by the way that Americans at home celebrated Christmas that year — gifts tended toward the practical and the simple (hats, scarves, comic books) rather than the extravagant. Due to the government food rationing on sugar, dairy, and coffee, a celebratory Christmas dinner including some of these luxuries would have been a very special treat. Things may have seemed very somber during the 1943 holiday, but the following year brought critical strategic victories for the Allied forces, and a turning point in the long and difficult war. The Museum will have extended hours on Saturday, December 3 while the town hosts its annual holiday party and tree lighting ceremony. After the celebration, the exhibit will remain in place until after the new year and visitors will be able to view it by appointment for the duration of the holiday season. Should you wish to have a private showing, please contact Denise Andrews at 703.753.2600 or dhall@ townofhaymarket.org ❖
Denise Andrews is the Interim Town Clerk and Director of Business & Community Relations for the Town of Haymarket. Her passion for the town has enabled her to develop strong relationships in the business community while educating its visitors and citizens of the town’s rich history. Denise lives in Haymarket with her daughter Ciera and son Sean.
THE TOWN OF HAYMARKET'S ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY AND TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY The town holiday celebration on Saturday, December 3 will kick off with performances from local students, dance groups, and musicians in front of the town hall. Visitors will enjoy “A Taste of Haymarket” courtesy of local vendors, and s’mores kits will be sold to benefit the Serve Our Willing Warriors (SOWW) project, a local nonprofit that serves wounded and ill soldiers and their families. A bonfire, cookie decorating station, and holiday music will make this a day to remember! A special treat will be the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus — after parading down Washington Street, they will visit with families in the town park adjacent to the museum. As the sun goes down, the town tree will be lit to start the holiday season.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?
DENISE ANDREWS Director of Business & Community Relations Town of Haymarket 15000 Washington Street, Suite 100 703-753-2600 | townofhaymarket.org When and why did you decide to join this company/firm?
I began working for the Town part-time in August of 2012. Making the transition from project management to local government proved to be a great opportunity for me. How does your business serve the Haymarket-Gainesville community?
Although the Town of Haymarket is only a half square mile, it serves a much broader area; through our Town sponsored events, historic museum, local shops

and, restaurants, we provide a service and meet the needs of the surrounding area. Thus our tagline, “Haymarket … everyone’s hometown.” Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your business.
One of the greatest moments would have definitely been this year’s Haymarket Day. The excitement of the crowd as we honored Retired Sgt. Marcus Dandrea as our Grand Marshal was such a beautiful experience. One that brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

My top three business tips are: Listen more, speak less. God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. I’m a firm believer that if you spend more time listening and less speaking, you can truly address the needs and/ or concerns of your client. Greet everyone with energy and purpose! When you introduce yourself that way, your energy can only be infectious! Make it a point to build trust and a purposeful connection. When those around you trust you, you are more likely to build a relationship. Don’t over promise. I was once told by a former manager, “only promise what you can truly do.” If you always give 100% in your efforts, your client will appreciate your honesty and dedication. When did you join the HGBA and how have you been involved with the organization?
Since I began representing the Town of Haymarket in 2013, I attend most meetings and networking events as well as hosting an HGBA meeting at Town Hall. For you, what is the primary benefit of being a member of HGBA?
The primary benefit for the Town is actually twofold. First, it’s informational--it lets other HGBA members
.biz
know what’s happening here in the Town. Secondly, it draws potential new businesses to set up “brick & mortar” locations here in Haymarket. What do you enjoy about living in this area?
What I enjoy most is the great sense of community. Although some may still consider HaymarketGainesville rural, I don’t. We are a “melting pot” of diverse nationalities and ethnicities, which makes living here great! What do you love to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I am a diehard Cheer-Mom. After cheering myself and coaching for over six years, I now support my daughter, who is a varsity cheerleader at Battlefield High School. When cheer season is over, I switch gears to basketball where my son plays point guard for the Gainesville Griffins. I guess you can say I’m always cheering! Do you have a favorite Christmas memory to share?
My favorite Christmas memory would definitely be Christmas 2015. Marrying two days before Christmas last year was very special for me. Having my entire family at my home cooking, laughing, and sharing childhood stories with our children made it even more meaningful. ❖

The influenza viruses contained in flu shots are killed so they cannot cause infection. The most common flu shot side effect is injection site soreness, which can last a couple of days. Rare symptoms include low-grade fever, muscle aches and feelings of discomfort or weakness that last only a few days. As of June 2016, the CDC is no longer recommending the nasal spray form of the flu vaccine, stating it is “ineffective” and only protects against 3 percent of cases. In comparison, the flu shot is 63 percent effective. Everyone over 6 months old should receive a flu vaccine every season, as recommended by the CDC. Always consult your physician before getting a flu shot. There are rare instances in which you may be ineligible for vaccination, including a history of allergic reactions, especially to eggs, which are used to grow the vaccine.
Flu Shot
Myths
L
ess than 50 percent of Americans got the flu shot during the 2014-2015 flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The misconceptions surrounding influenza vaccinations can be as rampant and hard to fight as the virus itself. Each year, an average of 200,000 Americans are hospitalized with the flu, and it kills between 3,000 and 49,000 people. “Education is our No. 1 barrier,” said Dr. Gary DeRosa of Novant Health UVA Health System Bull Run Family Medicine. “The flu is an extremely dangerous virus and vaccination is the only safeguard we have to protect people from contracting it and spreading it further.” Here are three myths that circulate each year. { DECEMBER 2016 |

Three flu shot myths debunked
22
The flu vaccine can give you the flu.
}
Even with vaccination, flu infection is possible. You may be exposed to the flu virus shortly before getting vaccinated or before your body has built enough antibodies in the two weeks after you’ve received the shot to fight the infection. You may also be exposed to a strain of the flu that is not included in the seasonal flu vaccine. There are a multitude of flu viruses and the flu shot is only designed to protect against the three or four viruses that are expected to be most common that year. You may also become infected with a flu virus that your shot was designed to protect against, especially if you’re at higher risk for the flu. The flu shot is still your best defense against the flu and can decrease the severity of your symptoms if you do contract the virus.
MYTH
The influenza virus changes every year so getting vaccinated annually is important to make sure you have immunity to the strains most likely to cause an outbreak. The flu vaccine must be reformulated each year to protect against the most common viruses circulating that season.

Reading Together Christmas Family Traditions by Tracy McPeck

called “Home for Christmas” and dance around the Christmas tree. When we were tired out, we’d lay under the tree and gaze up at the twinkling lights. Every year, it had to be the same decorations, same music, and same cookies. So it is with books. Christmas is the perfect time to combine family tradition with an important component of family life: reading together. In general, reading with your children fosters a lifetime love of books and a positive association with reading, building the foundation for success when children get to school. Reading beloved Christmas books together helps strengthen family bonds and creates a lasting tradition. Prince William Public Library staff members were asked about their families’ traditions surrounding a well-loved Christmas book. Perhaps their stories, from poignant to funny, will help inspire you to begin your own.
t’s the most wonderful time of year, when storefronts sparkle, trees are gaily trimmed, and the air is filled with the scent of freshly-baked sugar cookies. People are a bit kinder, a bit more cheerful, and everywhere you go snippets of Christmas tunes waft from store speakers, car radios, and holiday shoppers’ mouths. Workplaces become festive with ugly-sweater parties, potluck lunches, and an overabundance of cookies and candy. The December air is crisp and often holds the scent of snow, even if a white northern Virginia Christmas is rare. Christmas is also the time to celebrate tradition. When I was a child, my Mom went all out decorating the tree with “tasteful” pieces such as the gold-shellacked, macaronicovered object I created in preschool. The mantel would be festooned with handpainted ceramics (that actually were tasteful). My sister and I would listen to an old album

When my two siblings and I were kids, our favorite version of The Night before Christmas was a pop-up book…I believe it was published in the 70s, and my mom said it was just an impulse buy at the grocery store. My dad would read it every Christmas Eve. My brother and sister and I would take turns pulling the tabs and turning the wheels. Of course, a few of the pages were favorites and all three of us would have to have a turn. The funniest one was Santa filling the stockings, with a little present-laden arm that flapped up and down when you pulled the tab. We all remember it very fondly. Sadly, this book is no longer in print, but two Christmases ago my mom gifted each of us with a second-hand copy! So now I carry on the tradition by reading it with my own children on Christmas Eve. I might have to buy another copy as a back up. My children like that flapping arm as much as we did, and Santa is looking a little peaked on that page.

Laura’s tradition is based on a movie A Christmas Story, derived from the book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd. Our Christmas tradition actually comes from the movie A Christmas Story. It all started from a time when businesses and restaurants closed for Christmas, and in the movie the Parker family went out for “Chinese Turkey” on Christmas Day because the neighbors’ dogs ate their Christmas turkey. When I was a kid, the only restaurants open on Christmas Eve in Maryland were Chinese restaurants. So now it is our family’s tradition to go out for Chinese food after church on Christmas Eve, even though there are many options available in 2016.

When my sister and I were growing up, our mom read the Christmas Story from St. Luke every Christmas Eve at midnight. The lights in the house were turned off, and the only light came from a few decorative candles and the Christmas tree lights. It was magical. I continued it with our son. Now my son’s little one is two this Christmas, and he has asked me to find a board book with a simplified version of the story so that he can continue this beloved tradition. My mom is no longer with us, but her legacy lives on.

When I was little, my mother had these two elves that were very similar to the Elf on the Shelf®. They were happy little elves with smiling faces, green little outfits, and tall hats. Every year at the beginning of December, my mom would bring them out of their box and place them on a high shelf. There they would sit, watching my older sister and me, supposedly reporting back to Santa every evening on our behavior. As I grew older, I still loved seeing our little elves every year. Years later, when I was pregnant with my second daughter and my first born was just three, I stumbled upon some elves in a craft store. Memories of Christmas and those elves flooded back to me. I walked out of the store with two little elves for my girls and a Christmas tradition began. Our elves show up on December 1st to help my girls count the days till Christmas. Every night they hide somewhere with treats, so in the morning my girls have to find them. My girls are now teenagers and still love this tradition.

“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.” I don’t think there is anything else that brings the meaning of Christmas closer to my family more than How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. Christmas is probably our favorite time. We love putting up the tree, shopping for gifts, and even making Roast-Beast. This treasured story helps us to remember the joy of family and friends with the welcoming of Christ in our lives. But it is very easy to lose sight of what is really important. The Christmas spirit is an extremely powerful feeling that brings all of us together for that special moment each year. Baby’s first Christmas, family not seen for quite some time, serving those in need in our community are all amazing memories we get create with those special to us. And this book is a reminder to all of us to make those unforgettable moments because, before you know it, they are gone. For my family, reading the book at night and then having the opportunity to bring the book to life with two wonderful movies only helps us continue the happiness this story gives our family. If you still haven’t brought this book into your family, you are missing a wonderful Christmas tradition; one that was passed down to me, and will be passed down to my children and so forth.
Tracy McPeck is the Programming and Outreach Coordinator for Prince William Public Libraries. A former youth services librarian, Tracy was the kid who was born with her nose in a book. If you still need some inspiration, I came across this blog post with an easy Christmas book tradition that you can start with books from our libraries. Simply take 24 Christmas books, wrap them in paper, and have your child/children open a new one each night to read together as a family. Of course, you might have to renew a few of those library books! Here’s the link to the blog: http://simpleasthatblog. com/2013/11/family-tradition-christmas-book-countdown.html All of the books mentioned above, save for Beth’s discontinued popup book, can be found in the Prince William Public Library System. Les Harlan began planting Christmas trees on his Harlan Tree Farm in Nokesville in 1989, and started selling them in 1996. Les recently retired from a career as a general contractor. He grew up on farm in the mountains of Pennsylvania, growing crops and raising animals. He remembers when he was a child, his family would head into the woods and fields each winter to cut a fresh tree for their holidays.
THE
Perfect CHRISTMAS TREE
Picking a healthy tree that is just right for you. By Les Harlan

A
s each winter approaches, many families who celebrate Christmas make a tradition of finding and bringing home the “perfect” Christmas tree. Some enjoy the simplicity of an artificial tree while others enjoy the convenience of a precut tree. Those seeking a true family experience will usually pick and cut a fresh tree from a local tree farm together.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING A TREE
Here are some tips for ensuring you obtain the best possible tree for your holiday season. Cut Fresh One of the greatest advantages of cutting your own tree is being able to rest assured that it’s going to last the whole season without drying out and dripping needles. With pre-cut trees, there is no way of knowing how long ago they were cut, nor how they’ve been watered or handled. A fresh-cut tree that is properly watered will last for months, unless it’s put near a fireplace or a heat register once in the house. Vibrancy of Color Color may be an indicator of a tree’s potential to last through the holiday season. Variations in the shades of green are normal, especially from one species to another. However, if the green of the needles has a dull
One of the greatest advantages of cutting your own tree is being able to rest assured that it’s going to last the whole season... or faded appearance, the tree may not last as long as a tree that has bright, vivid needles. All evergreens tend to lose a little vibrancy when winter starts because they go into a hibernation-like state to survive the harsh winter weather. Compare the tree to the other trees close by. If you see one that is noticeably less bright in color, know that it may only last a few weeks. You also might find that trees have differentcolored sides, based on their exposure to the sun. If one side of a tree absorbs the majority of the daylight, that side will be lighter than the shady side. Considering most people put their Christmas tree in a corner or against a wall and cover the tree with decorations, this usually isn’t a problem. Size & Shape The general shape of a tree doesn’t give any indication of its health. When I trim the trees each year, I try to follow
the shape that they are taking on naturally. I just groom them to keep their sides even and their top pointed. Some of them end up short and wide, others tall and thin. Size and shape is simply a personal preference. Just make sure that the tree fits through your doors and under your ceiling. Another thing to consider is the size and shape of the trunk. Measure your tree stand before heading to the farm so you can make sure that the tree you take home will fit. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF TREE TO BUY?
At my farm, I’ve tried planting all kinds of Christmas trees, from Douglas Firs to Fraser Firs to Colorado Blue Spruce, but they just don’t take to the soil and climate here. When selecting the type of tree for your home, you may want to consider a few characteristics that vary among different types of trees to determine your preference. Here are a few commonly grown trees readily available in our local area. White Pine White pine trees have flexible limbs with long, soft needles that are medium-green. They are the most lush of our trees, and probably the most fragrant. They are more likely bend under the weight of heavy ornaments. Heights of 5 - 12 feet are available.
{ DECEMBER 2016 |
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
37
Scotch Pine Scotch pine trees have firm branches with medium length needles, and are quite prickly. They have more of a bluish-green color, and are mildly fragrant. They do very well with heavy ornaments. Heights of 6 - 7 feet are available. Norway Spruce Norway Spruce trees have sturdy branches with short needles, and they look very elegant. They are a slightly darker green than white pines, and are mildly fragrant. They do well with heavy ornaments. Heights of 6 - 7 feet are available. CARING FOR YOUR TREE
Once you’ve chosen and cut your tree, it’s time to plan for its care before you set it up. If the tree isn’t going up right away, you need to be aware that for each day the tree isn’t in water, you’ll need to cut about ½-inch off the trunk. When the tree has been cut down, sap will begin to seal the cut trunk closed. After a day, it will have hardened, making the tree unable to absorb water. Cutting off ½-inch for each “down” day before setting the tree up will reopen the trunk and allow it to take on water again. There’s also an option that gives you a great selection of trees without forcing you to cut the tree right away. Some farms, including mine, allow you to tag a tree up to a month before Christmas, and you can come back to cut it closer to the holiday, ensuring its freshness. Some farms use netting to make the tree easier to transport. The netting applies pressure evenly around the entire tree and helps to keep the shape even. After cutting, the sooner you can get your tree upright and in water, the longer it will last. If at all possible, stand your tree up and put the trunk in water, even if you aren’t decorating right away. If you lay a tree down for more than a couple of hours between cutting it down and putting it up, you’ll need to give it some time to settle before decorating. When a tree lays on one side for too long, that side will flatten, making the shape of the tree uneven. Put the tree in the stand, give it water, and allow it to settle back into its full shape overnight before decorating. This can make decorating easier, and the end result more beautiful. WHAT MAKES A CHRISTMAS TREE PERFECT?
Top: White Pine. Bottom: Norway Spruce.

That is in the eye of the beholder. People like different kinds, sizes, shapes, and colors. Above all, the experience of being out on a farm with family, choosing a tree, getting it home, and decorating it all together should be memorable. Hopefully, these tips will help you select the “perfect” tree for your family this year. ❖

eaving through the maze of medical and dental insurance in today’s world can overwhelm any consumer. With the inclusion of pediatric dental coverage in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, making the right decision for your family’s dental health can require thoughtful consideration. A lot of people think medical and dental insurance coverages work the same, but they do not. The dental insurance annual benefit amount is there to assist in the payment for services, but should never serve as the sole basis for what treatment a patient receives. The amounts are arbitrary and can vary from $1,000 to $25,000 per year per person in the family. If you do not use the benefits, you lose them, and they do not “carry over” from one year to the next.
SECONDARY
DENTAL
What is Primary vs. Secondary Insurance? Primary dental insurance is the main policy that is used to cover dental treatment. If both spouses have dental insurance, each person has to designate to their company the plan that is primary and the plan that is secondary. Do not leave this to the insurance company to decide! Any discrepancies can lead to higher out-of-pocket co-pays for you due to delayed payments to your dentist for services already rendered. Secondary insurance is an additional plan purchased to help offset any remaining fees for treatment
INSURANCE Is it worth the cost?
{ DECEMBER 2016 |
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
Three Tips to Maximize Secondary Coverage 1) Know what treatment you need to get healthy. See your family dentist at least twice per year to determine a plan of action. It is much easier and costs less to repair small cavities than to have major treatment such as crowns, root canals, and extractions. If you have a large treatment plan with several tooth replacements, a secondary policy may not help as much as you think. If you have a smaller plan, it may be perfect for you. 2) Know if you have a dental rider on your medical plan. Most dental insurances will count a dental rider as your primary insurance—even if the company will pay nothing towards your dental treatment. Not knowing can cost you even more money. 3) Know your benefits. If you have a toothache today, do you have a waiting period? Do you have adult coverage for braces or Invisalign? Is your coverage for a denture or will your insurance help pay for bridges or implants that stay in the mouth? Navigating the maze of insurance is not always easy. However, your dental professional is a great source for help. ❖

after it is completed. However, not all secondary plans will pay additional costs. Some cover none if the first one has paid the maximum amount they would have covered for a service.

GOOD FOR THE SOUL Therapy dogs visit local hospital to bring comfort and love By Christine Craddock
J
anet Beese and Sue Smith are happy to play second fiddle to their dogs, Chloe and Brody, anytime they bring them out in public. The dogs take over the spotlight as soon as they step foot inside the lobby at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center. Smith and Beese liken it to when you have a child and all of a sudden your identity changes to ‘mom’ or ‘dad’ instead of your own name. Staff, visitors, doctors, nurses — they all flock to the dogs with smiles on their faces, the dogs’ handlers noticed and greeted second. Chloe and Brody are members of Manassas Therapy Dogs, an organization that was founded in 2003 by Shirley Way and her dog Dilly; the organization is now comprised of 50 dog and handler teams that visit local hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, and police stations to bring comfort to those who need it. Top: Chloe is a Shih Tzu who works with her owner, Janet Beese, to provide comfort to people. Bottom Left: Brody, the Welsh Terrier, has been providing pet therapy for 6 years with owner Sue Smith. Bottom Right: Brody the therapy dog gets some good pets from Carolina Craddock.

Often, ‘you made my day’ is the sentiment expressed when the dogs come to visit. Years ago, both Smith and Beese became immediately interested in pet therapy when they learned more about what therapy dogs could do for people. Beese was at the Gainesville PetSmart with Chloe, partaking in obedience classes, when she noticed how quickly the dog was picking up on the training. When she went online to search for more opportunities to maximize Chloe’s talents, Manassas Therapy Dogs was one of the first links she came across. It was “meant to be,” she says, and perfect timing because Beese was feeling like she needed to channel her time and efforts into volunteering. Smith
learned more about therapy dogs at a booth at a local event and thought Brody would be a great match for the job. The dog has to be a ‘people dog,’ says Smith and not every dog is suited for every venue — the situation has to be appropriate for the dog’s temperament. While the dogs that are involved with pet therapy range in size, there are certain aspects to each situation that may require a certain quality in a dog. For example, a smaller dog would be better at snuggle therapy. Canines have to pass many therapy tests that follow the guidelines of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and the testing

may include being confronted with wheelchairs, walkers, and loud noises — all designed to gauge the dog’s reactions to being in certain environments. Dogs and handlers must also undergo observed visits, in which the testers observe how the pets are handled, how the animals respond to people, whether or not they bark, and the dogs’ interest level in performing this kind of work. Once they pass the tests and observations, they become registered and earn their ‘red heart,’ signifying their important new job title. For six years, Smith and her Welsh Terrier, Brody, have been providing pet therapy while Beese and her Shih Tzu, Chloe, have been involved for a little over two years. Both Beese and Smith say there are many stories that stand out in their mind as special and memorable. Smith particularly remembers coming to visit with a woman who sat alone, her eyes and body language indicating that she was closed off emotionally to others in the room. But when Brody came in, she opened her eyes, reached for him, and “her face lit up.” And Brody, sitting at the edge of her bed, noticed the woman couldn’t reach far enough to pet him. Without being told, he scooted forward to be closer to her. This is an example of the many times the dogs seem to sense what each person in each unique situation needs from them, for instance, when a patient would like them to lie down on the bed with them. Another experience was with
a young man at a youth event, who was seemingly in despair with his head in his hands and unwilling to participate in the activities with others. Brody “kept pulling me to him,” says Smith, who eventually asked the boy if he would sit on the floor with the dog. Within 10 minutes the boy went from complete sadness to laughing out loud while Brody licked his face. At Haymarket Medical Center, the reactions from patients and staff are enthusiastic and appreciative. Lita Bartels, Volunteer Coordinator, says the dogs are just as important to the staff who work in the high-stress jobs as they are to the patients receiving care. Kate Edwards, a nurse in the Surgery Center, says “the unconditional love from an animal, the sheer joy and emotion . . . they just love you and they sense your need.” Often, “you made my day” is the sentiment expressed when the dogs come to visit. Others have said “she is good for my soul,” when encountering one of the therapy dogs at a rehab center. Without the need to finish the sentence, Beese and Smith say it perfectly: “The things these dogs can do….” Smith and Beese, with their canine companions, can be seen at many local libraries, nursing homes, and events. They visit every Wagging Wednesday at the Haymarket Medical Center. Hiking Opens Hearts Warrenton-Based Hiking Club Supports CureSearch for Children’s Cancer
Boots ’n Beer Inaugural CureSearch Ultimate Hike Saturday, December 10, 2016 Manassas National Battlefield Park

Tell Children’s Cancer To “Take A Hike”
s my feet tread the stony ridge of the vast Allegheny Mountains, I am struck by the fact that this stretch of landscape, this land I am actually stepping on, has been around for at least a half a billion years, pressured in place by giant continental tectonic shifts. A sense of awe slowly envelops me as I continue quietly hiking on one of the earth’s oldest mountain ranges. My thoughts wander from here, to yesterday, and tomorrow. At a slight outlook, I stop and let my eyes sweep over the near mountains to the far ridges of the Alleghenies on the bluish horizon. I take in a deep breath of this grand expansiveness, and as I do so the tranquility I see before me embraces my heart, and I am engulfed with a profound sense of absolute wonderment. As I sit down on a boulder of this magnificent mountain ridge that stretches from New York to the Deep South my thoughts leave my day-to-day life far behind and the vastness and grandeur of this panorama in front of me casts everything into perspective. Yes, John Muir’s words speak the truth: “… up here all the world’s prizes seem nothing.” I am glad I am here, disconnected from the digital world, surrounded by a gentle breeze with large birds gliding with the wind through the blue skies. The longer I sit grounded to this wondrous healing earth, emotions of freedom and gratitude well up in me
and ever so quietly the words “thank you” roll off my lips. On the way down the mountain, I am reminded of Meister Eckhart’s words, “If the only prayer you say in your life is ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” Boots ‘N Beer Charities supports CureSearch for Children’s Cancer Several years ago, Jim Carson, founder of Boots ’n Beer, which has the moniker “a drinking club with a hiking problem,” proposed to transform our hiking club into a charity to more consciously open our hearts and to extend our love of hiking to help others. In particular, and born out of personal tragedy, he selected CureSearch for Children’s Cancer as Boots ’n Beer’s first core charity. Their mission is to end children’s cancer by driving targeted and innovative research with measurable results in an accelerated time frame. In the past, Boots ’n Beer has helped CureSearch supporters in raising funds and hiking the Ultimate Hike in Dolly Sods, West Virginia. The goal of the hike is to “Tell Children’s Cancer to ‘Take a Hike.’” Each hiker’s goal is to raise a minimum of $2,500. Each year, members Jim Carson and Andreas Keller head the fundraising efforts and organize and train the hikers to get them ready for the 21-mile challenging trek. Last year, member Cooper Wright not only served as Trail Ambassador during the Ultimate Hike event, but

also raised over $5,000 to benefit CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. Many a hiker, humbled by nature, shares the same experience of a growing thankfulness that can often change the world he or she sees. Hikers become aware of their many blessings and are grateful for the natural abundance of life available to them to enjoy. Surely, practicing gratitude enhances happiness, resilience, health, and most importantly, opens one’s heart to others. This is what has happened in our own Boots ‘n Beer hiking club. ❖
