A Living Legacy:
St. Paul’s Anglican Church
Future plans for St. Paul’s include a two-story multi-purpose building, which would be located between the church and the rectory on Fayette Street. By John T. Toler
In addition to being the oldest church in continuous use in Prince William County, on many levels St. Paul’s Anglican Church is a link to the past, present and future of the Town Haymarket. The church has a unique legacy that the rector, the Rev. David N. Jones, his staff and congregation values and continues. “The Gospel continues to be proclaimed and the Holy Scriptures expounded.” Located on a gentle curve on presentday Fayette Street, the classical brick structure that is home to St. Paul’s was originally built in 1801 – two years after the founding of Haymarket – as the District Courthouse for Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier and Prince William counties. James Wren designed the building, and the style mirrored the original Fairfax County Courthouse. The building was situated in the village on a section of the Old Carolina Road, once the main north-south thoroughfare. January 2011
In 1807 the Commonwealth of Virginia adopted a Circuit Court system, and county court operations were moved to Dumfries. The last court session held in Haymarket took place on November 3, 1808, and in 1812, the commonwealth ordered the building sold. The building was bought by the Hygeia Academy in 1814, but after two years, the school failed. For several years, the building was used temporarily as a school and meetinghouse, as well as a church by various denominations, including Presbyterians and Episcopalians. It was purchased by prominent Haymarket property owner William Skinker, who in 1830 turned it over for use by the local worshipping congregation of Episcopalians. At the time, the Rev. “Parson Steele” served as rector. In the account written in 1934 for St. Paul’s Centennial, Alice Maude Ewell wrote that the church had “…a square, railed-in chancel in the west end, a high pulpit in the back of
this, and underneath this last in front, a small table with marble top used for Holy Communion. What had been a jury room was converted into a vestry and rector’s study. This opened into a gallery supported by pillars and was in the east end of the building.” Bishop William Meade (1789-1862) visited Haymarket on October 12-13, 1833. “The house in which I preached was an old, deserted courthouse, which, nevertheless, was capable of being converted into a comfortable church, at a very moderate expense. At the conclusion of the services, I addressed them on the condition of the neighborhood and the house in which we were assembled, and promised if they would convert the house into a becoming house of worship, I would visit them again in the month of July, and dedicate it to God, and perform all the holy ordinances of the church in it. “As I came down from the pulpit, two gentlemen assured me it should be done; continued on page 6 5
continued from page 5 I am happy to learn that their promise has already been sacredly fulfilled,” wrote Bishop Meade. He returned the following summer as promised, and later reported that the building had been “… secured by friends of the church, and very neatly and comfortably fitted up for public worship.” The church was consecrated by Bishop Meade on Aug. 8, 1834, and according to Miss Ewell, Haymarket Parish, formerly part of Leeds Parish, was established about that time. She also notes that Bishop Meade confirmed the first class presented in 1848.
St. Paul’s in the Civil War Antebellum days in Haymarket were relatively quiet, and at the outbreak of the Civil War, the Rev. John A. Towles was serving as the rector of St. Paul’s. He resigned early in the war to serve briefly in the Confederate Army. Rev. Towles had three sons who served in the Confederate Army as well; none would survive the war. Following the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, everything would be changed forever for St. Paul’s, and for Haymarket. Mistakenly told that the Confederates had lost the battle, “Everyone left the church at once, including the preacher (a visiting Confederate chaplain). This was the last service until after the war… four years,” wrote Miss Ewell. “Word came from Confederate headquarters to remove from the church everything possible that might interfere with its being used as a hospital.” In the meantime, St. Paul’s congregation met in private homes and other places. “The silver for Holy Communion was hidden by one of the vestrymen, Mr. Frederick Foote, in the cellar of his home, ‘Waverley,’” wrote Miss Ewell. “The Bible and other prized articles were secreted by the Misses (Ellen and Sarah) Gray, who lived near the church, and for many years were its faithful caretakers.” 6
St. Paul’s Church was soon filled with wounded men, who were cared for by the women of Haymarket. By the end of the ordeal, 80 Confederate soldiers died at St. Paul’s, and were buried in the churchyard and an adjoining lot.
vestry room converted to a gallery. A vestry room at the head of the church was also added. A more significant addition, the recess chancel was built on the rear of the church about 1897. It is noteworthy that the Rev. John
The situation became more desperate after the Second Battle of Manassas (Aug. 28-30, 1862), at which time St. Paul’s again became a hospital, but this time for wounded Union soldiers. The Federals treatment of the building was much harsher. After the wounded were gone, the church was used as a stable. Pews and the pulpit were torn up and used for firewood, and windows and doors knocked out. Union dead were buried in a trench along the extreme west side of the churchyard, and later reburied in Arlington National Cemetery. Once no longer of use to the Union occupation force, the building was burned, leaving only the walls standing – a fate that most of the rest of Haymarket had suffered earlier, during the Nov. 5, 1862 sacking and burning of the town.
Recovery and Rebuilding After the war, former residents of Haymarket began to return to the devastated village. The Rev. William A. Alrich, a native of Delaware who had served in the Confederate Army, became rector of St. Paul’s on March 1, 1867. Tapping his northern friends, Rev. Alrich managed to collect $600 to rebuild the church, and remarkably, the first service since the start of the war was held there on Sept. 1, 1867. “It must be added that when a claim for damages was afterwards presented, it was ultimately paid by the Federal Government,” wrote Miss Ewell. Over the next 50 years, the church building was improved and expanded, with the old arched courthouse porch enclosed for a vestibule, the old gallery torn down, and the former jury and

Ambler, great-nephew of Chief Justice John Marshall, served as rector of St. Paul’s from 1885-1871. He was the first rector to hold regular services at Grace Chapel at Hickory Grove, off the Old Carolina Road on present-day Loudoun Drive north of Haymarket. “For the first time we began to have a real church center,” wrote Miss Ewell. “Mr. Ambler was the one to build it up. He combined in remarkable degree the most sincere piety with worldly wisdom and knowledge of human nature.” By the beginning of the 20th century, St. Paul’s was the mother church or home church for several chapels located in the countryside around Haymarket. Dedicated lay people maintained the chapels, and made sure everything was ready for Sunday services. In addition to Grace Chapel, Rev. Carey Gamble held regular services at Holy Trinity Chapel at Thoroughfare (1906), St. Luke’s Chapel at Buckland (1906), and the Church of Our Saviour (Whittle Parish) at Little Georgetown. The old rectory was sold in 1900, and Haymarket Lifestyle
a new rectory built on the Beale lot next to the church later that year. Across Fayette Street, a new Parish Hall was built in 1912. Misses Ellen and Sarah Gray, both of whom had died in 1906, gave property for the hall to the church. The building was largely a gift of parishioner Col. Newland T. DePauw, of “Waverley.” In 1920, Rev. Thomas M. Browne proposed purchasing “Graphoscope” moving picture projection equipment for use in the Parish Hall, and since there was no electrical service, a Delco Light plant. A nominal admission was charged in order to make the movies self-supporting. The Haymarket community also used the Parish House for Haymarket High School graduation exercises, until the school was closed in 1940. To accommodate the increased activities, a large addition to the Parish Hall was built in 1962 at a cost of $27,000.
The Work Continues St. Paul’s congregation faced a serious crisis in 1974, when it was determined that the foundations under the chancel at the rear and the vestibule at the

front were collapsing. Estimates for a complete restoration ran as high as $100,000 – money the church did not have. In response, the vestry went to the congregation, asking if as much of the work as possible be done by the men of the parish. A work party of 21 men under Senior Warden Macon Piercy was organized, and work began on Feb. 22, 1975, with the men bringing tools and materials and the women preparing lunch. At the end of the first 11-hour workday, the building was stabilized, with $9,000 worth of repairs completed. Later, professionals were called in to do the plastering and other special work. For eight months, services were held in the Parish Hall. On Easter Sunday 1975, the congregation returned to the church, marching in a joyous procession. The Rev. David N. Jones, who previously served as the Director of College Ministry in the Diocese of South Carolina, was called to serve St. Paul’s in 1996, when Haymarket was beginning to experience great growth and change. The development of Green Hill Crossing was underway, and commercial development filling-in the open land between U.S. 15 at the west end and the middle of town. Since coming to St. Paul’s, Rev. Jones has seen changes in the old neighborhood Street as well, with the wooded area across Fayette Street from the church replaced by new homes. The changing demographics have brought new families to the church, joining parishioners who have called St. Paul’s their church for generations. Currently, St. Paul’s has about 200 members. Some members of the congregation had children enrolled in the “Back to Basics” preschool on Washington Street in Haymarket, and when it became known that the school was going to close in 2000, they approached the church leadership, asking that St. Paul’s take over the school as part of its ministry. They agreed, and a board of directors consisting of church members and parents was assembled, and bylaws and policies written. St. Paul’s Christian School started

with 34 students, and has continued to grow, and now includes grades Pre-K through second. Two years ago, the school moved from Washington Street to the Parish Hall, where now about 125 students attend classes, “…but not all at the same time, of course,” adds Rev. Jones. The principal of St. Paul’s Christian School is Dr. Katherine Rickwald.
The Future of St. Paul’s In recent years, all of the buildings, including the church, were renovated. With the school moving into the Parish Hall, the Rectory is now used for administrative offices, the nursery and meeting space. Rev. Jones lives in a nearby neighborhood. In order to meet future parish needs, in 2009, parish leaders launched a capital campaign to raise money to be used to improve existing facilities and build a new multi-purpose building in the next five to ten years. The new two-story building would be located between the church and rectory where a parking lot is now located, and would offer a nursery, children’s ministry space, administrative continued on page 8 7

Minns lives near Warrenton with his wife and four children. Throughout the past 176 years, St. Paul’s has faced many changes and challenges, but the mission of the church has remained the same: “… to share Jesus Christ’s love and saving grace through proclamation and service, teaching and discipleship in the power of the Holy Spirit so that all people may know, love, and serve God by responding to His love with all their hearts, minds, and strength.” For additional information about St. Paul’s Anglican Church, visit www.saintpaulschurchhaymarket.com, and to learn more about St. Paul’s Christian School, visit www. stpaulsschoolhaymarket.org.
St. Paul’s Christian School is in the c. 1912 Parish Hall, across Fayette Street from the church.
St. Paul’s origin as an early 19th century courthouse is evident in the different brickwork patterns, which show how the building has changed over the past 200 years.

We designed our company with you, the customer, in mind. Plenty of parking, convenient access, expanded hours, a larger digital copy center, private meeting areas and a robust presence on the Internet were all created to serve you better. Add to that over 300 years of industry experience, our commitment to the environment and that we are locally owned and operated by Tony & Holly Tedeschi with a team of dedicated, talented and good-natured folks from the Piedmont region.

Pithy Advice for the New Year by: Jerole Nelson
It’s a New Year, and as business owners we reflect on our hits and misses and resolve to improve. So, HGBA is distilling it down for you by offering sage wisdom and advice from our member spotlights. These are our top ten picks for Business Resolutions for 2011. We would love to hear more of yours for our next newsletter! Simply email info@hgba.biz.
Get Organized.
Reconnect.
The healthier the core business operations, the better the chances that your business will survive and thrive. When information is at your fingertips or a click away, it allows you to be either more productive or have more “me” time. Win-win.
The New Year is also a good time to reach out to your customers, new and old. Remind them that you are out there and ready to help. The squeaky wheel gets attention.
Learn Something New. You know that much of running business is on-the-job training. Try a class accredited or not in something that may or may not, relate directly to your business. You will wake up your unused brain cells and pump fresh inspiration into your venture.
Quality Internet Presence. a Given the choice between two identical business; clients to gravitate to the one that offers a smart, professional appearance and relevant content first. (Also true of brick and mortar). This includes web, social media and web tools. Educate yourself even if you are a “sole-preneur.”
Get Paid. Revamp your debt collection policy, institute progress billing instead of waiting for the job to be over. Accept credit cards and better yet, have one on-file for auto billing.
Network. Offer to speak, present, and provide your expertise to a local business groups, like the HGBA, The Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.

Fauquier Health Exercise is Food for Your Body - And Your Mind You probably know that physical activity is good for your physical health. It can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. And yes, research shows that exercise may boost mental health, too. For example, many studies have suggested that exercise reduces the risk for depression. In a recent study of almost 20,000 Scottish women and men, exercise was linked to lessened “psychological distress” — including depression, anxiety and sleep problems. Any exercise was beneficial, but higher activity levels, especially involving sports, seemed more protective. A new study provides more evidence that activity of any intensity might ward off depression. More than 40,000 Norwegian women and men were asked about their leisure activities, workplace activities and depression and anxiety symptoms. Those who engaged in both light and intense leisure activities were much less likely to have either depression alone or both depression and anxiety than their inactive peers. Workplace activities didn’t seem to have a protective effect. The evidence suggested that exercise’s social benefits play a larger role than its physical effects. So, how do you fit physical activity into your schedule? Even light activity is better than none at all, and changing the way you approach everyday tasks can make a big difference. Try these tips: Turn exercise into a family outing with a bike ride or nature walk. Bundle everybody up and head outdoors. Take up an active hobby, such as golf or yoga. Join a class or sports team whose members count on you to show up. That accountability can give you the nudge you need to stick to your new routine. Turn chores into a workout. Use a shovel instead of a snow blower, and do energetic housework. Pedal on a stationary bike or do sit-ups and lunges while watching TV. If you can work regular activity into your day, the research shows you may be less likely to experience depression or anxiety. Without even considering the other healthful benefits of regular exercise, that’s reason enough to get moving!
Know Your Numbers Before making any meaningful changes in your exercise routines or diet, it’s a good idea to see your doctor to ensure that your plans are in line with your fitness level and general health. Your primary care physician can test your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels so that you have baseline measurements. After you have been exercising for three months or so, have your levels tested again to monitor your progress. There’s no better incentive than success you can measure! Dr. Esther Bahk is an internist with Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas, at 7915 Lake Manassas Drive, Suite 101, in Gainesville. She can be reached at 703-743-7300. 38

Giuseppe’s Ristorante Italiano
Heartfelt & Handmade genuine italian cuisine
A Victorian-style building with green accents and a large covered front porch with stark white rails is the home of Giuseppe’s Ristorante Italiano. Beautifully decorated with European sophistication, the interior is warm and comfortable. Owners, Joe and Josie Russo wanted to bring the area a restaurant that would provide guests with affordable authentic Italian dishes in a family- like atmosphere.
Learning his culinary skills from his family in Palermo, Sicily, Joe also found his passion for quality homemade dishes.
The Mozzarella Squares are hand-cut and breaded, served with their house marinara sauce.
“I love pasta!” exclaimed Joe. “We take the time to make it right.”
Their lunch menu offers soups, salads, and subs on homemade bread. The Meatball or Chicken Parmigiana are both a delicious and filling choice. They have a daily lunch special for $6.99(call for special of the day). Pizza’s like Giuseppe’s Special featuring pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms
Open for almost four years, the Russo’s upgraded their pizza and sub shop that proudly served Western Prince William for over 25 years into an expanded restaurant that has a menu featuring homemade Sicilian dishes and specialty items. Both Joe and Josie were born in Italy; growing up Italian blessed them with the knowledge of the indulging culture. That experience has allowed them to recreate it successfully in Haymarket.
genuine Italian dishes created from family recipes. Their breads and desserts are made fresh daily.

His excitement is evident in the kitchen as he makes pasta noodles. Their fettuccini, lasagna, spaghetti, linguine, penne, capellini and others are all handcrafted. Giuseppe’s menu boasts
“It isn’t an expensive restaurant, we have really good prices for the style of food and love that is put into it,” said Josie. The Arancini is a true taste of Sicily. It is an award winning appetizer, a tasty deep fried rice ball delicately stuffed with beef, green peas, and prosciutto.
as well as others with regular or gourmet toppings are available. Lunch is served in the quiet, more romantic dining room or the bar area both providing Wi-Fi for those working through lunch. Dinner provides an expanded menu with baked dishes, specialty pasta, and a create-your-own pasta option. Chicken, Beef, Veal and Seafood Entrées grace the menu with bold flavor. Items like Lasagna alla Bolognese, Spaghetti with Meatballs Siciliane, Chicken Stuffed Haymarket Lifestyle
with Spinach, Crabmeat and Cheese and Seafood Canelloni add variety. Healthier options are available in “Josie’s Healthy Delight’s” which has low calorie, baked, and lightly salted choices. Whether it is romantic dinner for two, a few friends together or a family dinner, the dining room can accommodate everyone’s needs. Tastefully decorated and dimly lit with flickering candles it creates a peaceful ambience. A small and sinfully sweet dessert menu will not disappoint with a homemade Cannoli, Coconut Cake, Tiramisu, and Chocolate Mousse Cake. They make delightfully bold espresso and cappuccinos made with beans from Italy. Giuseppe’s menus is updated adding new items yearly. The couple makes one or two trips a year to Italy to help shape the menu with new Italian dining trends. They import Italian wine to compliment the menu. Creativity is encouraged in the kitchen. That’s how their popular Cannelloni with Chicken and White Lasagna were created. “If it’s not on the menu and it’s Italian we can accommodate you. If we can’t, we will suggest a dish to satisfy you,” Joe said. Giuseppe’s caters and has two private rooms available for various celebrations. Their Sicilian Room can accommodate 60-120 guests and their more intimate Hollywood Room can accommodate 20-50 guests. The menu is customizable and can include pasta, seafood, poultry, veal and various pastries. Giuseppe’s is located at 15120 Washington Street their hours are Mon-Sun 10am-11pm.
