History

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gibbons purchased La Grange in 1938, at a time when the main house had been abandoned and badly vandalized, as shown in this photo of the front of the house. Library of Congress.

La Grange: By John T. Toler

Part 2: La Grange, where history and wine intersect

Part 1, published in December 2013, dealt with the early history of La Grange, west of Haymarket, and its acquisition by Benoni Evans Harrison in 1827. Research by former Haymarket resident Ray Olszewski has revealed new information about Mr. Harrison and La Grange.

Two weeks after his 83rd birthday, Benoni E. Harrison completed his last will and testament, which was dated January 21, 1869. The first provision of his will set aside the one-half acre plot of the family cemetery, which he bequeathed to “… all who are in existence at the time of my death.” The second provision gave La Grange to Harrison’s nephew, Benoni H. Jordan, “…on the condition that he keeps the graveyard well enclosed.”

charge of whoever may be the occupant, till under the law, and this my will, now can hold them,” he wrote. However, by his third bequest, Harrison’s will becomes contradictory, or at best, confusing.

In addition, Harrison directed that Jordan also take care of several specific items of his personal property, including the mirror over his mantle, a piano, the two portraits of himself and Catherine, and “…all the books and pictures I may leave in the room now called the parlor,” and a mahogany wardrobe and marbletopped table.

“I give and bequeath to the oldest Blood Relation …in possession of La Grange under the Second Clause of this my will, whether male or female, for his or her life, my land called Gravel Plane, which contains about two hundred twenty-five acres. This as well as La Grange is to descend to the oldest Blood Relation I leave in existence, whether male or female, at the time of the death of the occupant (meaning Benoni Jordan?) under this my will, it being my wish and will that both La Grange and Gravel Plane continue in the possession of my Blood Relatives till the death of all of them… ”

“All these items I wish to remain in my present residence in the care and

Disputes over the interpretation of Harrison’s will persisted until the mid-

20th century, and regardless of his original intentions, determining the ownership of the property became more and more complex as the number of Harrison/ Jordan descendants increased – rather than dying off – over the years. A transcript of the original document is on display at La Grange, and the will is examined in Ray Olszewski’s forthcoming book, The Will: the Legend of Benoni Evans Harrison and La Grange, to be published in 2014.

The cemeteries at La Grange

Benoni Harrison died in August 1869, and was buried in the existing family cemetery, located about a quartermile south of the main house at La Grange. The terms of his will dictated the size of the marble slab to be placed over his grave and the inscription, which was to read: la grange continued on page 8 Haymarket Lifestyle

“Sacred to the memory of Benoni E. Harrison, a native of Virginia, Born in Prince William County the seventh day of January 1786, and died the (left blank) year of his age, and his earthly remains are deposited under or in front of this slab.” According to the survey done by Ron Turner and Betty Duley, the epitaph was shortened considerably, but the stone also bears the Masonic symbol, and there is a footstone marked “B.E.H.” Originally, there were two smaller cemeteries at La Grange – the original half-acre family burial ground described in Harrison’s will, and a smaller one west of the house. Years later, the two cemeteries, or at least the tombstones that marked the graves, were moved and consolidated on a small plot of land about a half-mile south of the house. The location of the original cemetery is not known, but it is likely that the remains of Benoni Harrison and other family members still rest there. These include Peyton Norvill, who died in 1849 and was the first person to be buried there; Benoni’s wife Catherine; Catherine’s stepmother Sarah A. Norvill (1788-1854), and Catherine’s sister, Margaret Norvill (1807-1864). Also buried at La Grange was Benoni Harrison’s great-nephew, Civil War veteran Hugh W. White (1839-1912). Recently, a new Confederate gravestone was placed in the consolidated cemetery by Wallace Harding, a descendant of Jane

Harding White, Hugh White’s mother. It is noteworthy that Hugh’s wife “Betty Jane” was buried in the cemetery at Little Georgetown, because by the time of her death in 1929, ownership of La Grange was still in dispute. Also buried there were John G. Gossom (1838-1899) and his wife, Mary F. Gossom (1838-1925), who was likely the last person buried at La Grange. Originally from Dumfries, the Gossoms lived at La Grange following Benoni Jordan’s death. The Gossom’s great-granddaughter, Mrs. Peggy Pickett Gardner, was born at Waterfall. She recalls visiting their graves, which were cared for by Mrs. Gardner’s grandfather, George A. “Allie” Gossom (1878-1977). “After studying several surveys, I realized that the cemetery had been moved. The stones are not placed in any logical order, and only three tombstones (those of Benoni Harrison, John C. Gossom and Hugh W. White’s new stone) are facing east toward the sunrise, as is traditionally done. The rest are facing west,” explained Mr. Olszewski. “It was probably done by a developer back in the 1980s. I’m working on finding factual evidence to back that up.” Hugh White’s son, Henry Samuel White (1888-1958) married Nancy Burgess (1898-1961), and lived in Thoroughfare Gap for many years. Their daughter, Helen White Mayhugh, lives in Warrenton. Mrs. Mayhugh and her cousin, Leslie White King, of King George County, Va. have been collecting

information about their family and La Grange, which they share with Mr. Olszewski.

La Grange in later years

According to the terms of Benoni Harrison’s will, ownership of La Grange passed to his nephew Benoni Harrison Jordan, and Gravel Plain to his “… oldest Blood Relation.” While he lived at La Grange, Jordan sold off parts of the property in order to hold on to the rest of it. He also rented the tenant houses on La Grange to bring in extra income. After Jordan’s death, John and Mary Gossom stayed on at La Grange as tenants and tried to maintain the place, according to Mr. Olszewski. However, after their passing, the house was often unoccupied, and during an extended period of vacancy, vandals stole much of the original woodwork, mantles and windows. The main reason for the periods of neglect was an ongoing legal battle over the provisions of Benoni Harrison’s will. The issue was brought to a head in a 1935 chancery case, Sarah Katherine Inskeep, et al, vs Virginia E. Blake et al. In a legal notice published in the Manassas Journal in November 1935, La Grange was described as a 388-acre farm “…containing an old brick colonial mansion thereon, in a bad state of decay.” A public auction of La Grange, as well as the 225-acre Gravel Plain property, was scheduled for Saturday, la grange continued on page 10

La Grange flourished while the Gibbons owned it. “It was a beautiful place, where they raised white-faced cattle,” recalled Mrs. Gardner. “The property was surrounded by a white board fence, and there wasn’t a weed to be found on the place.” A family named Rust lived in the two-story c. 1929 tenant house behind the main house. All this changed with the passing of Mr. Gibbons, and later the death of his widow, Irma I. Gibbons Carton, in 1972. At that point, La Grange passed to Cecil and Nancy Culbertson, trustees of her estate.

By May 1979, when LaGrange was photographed by Frances Jones for a Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission survey, the property was again overgrown and in deteriorating condition. Courtesy of the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC). la grange continued from page 8

Dec. 21, 1935, at the front door of the Prince William County Courthouse. Terms of the sale were, “One-third cash, and the residue of the purchase price in one and two year equal installments,” according to the notice. Commissioners of the sale were Burnett Miller and Thomas H. Lion. They were to handle the auction and “hold legal title to the real estate… until all purchase money has been fully paid.” Clerk of the Court at the time was George G. Tyler, and the auctioneer hired to handle the sale was J. P. Kerlin. However, the auction never took place, as more legal wrangling ensued. A second pleading was filed in February 1938, with eight complainants, once again led by Sarah Katherine Inskeep, vs. a list of over 130 respondents, all related somehow through their Harrison/Jordan ancestry. According to the pleading, “… the object of the above-styled suit is to construe the will of Benoni E. Harrison, deceased, to ascertain the heirs of said Benoni E. Harrison and all those who have an interest in his estate, to sell the land of which he died seized and possessed, and divide the proceeds among those thereto entitled.” The case was settled in March 1938. La Grange was sold to Joseph T. and 10

Irma Gibbons for $2,756, for which they received a Commissioner’s Deed for the property. The proceeds of the sale were divided among the complainants who agreed with the settlement; those who rejected the settlement would try again in 1954, but were unsuccessful. According to Mrs. Gardner, Joseph Gibbons owned a laundry company in Washington, D.C., and work to stabilize and repair the main house at La Grange began soon after the acquisition. “My uncle, Benoni Gossom, did a lot of work on the property while the Gibbons owned it,” she recalled. To this day, she remembers being impressed by the huge fireplace in the kitchen wing during a visit to La Grange with her grandfather. Work on the neglected main house included replacing missing windows and trim, and rebuilding damaged walls and floors. Major structural work involved rebuilding of the arched breezeway and extensive roof repairs. “The mantels, door and window trim, doors, windows and stairways are reproduction work. The floors are replacements,” according to the survey done for the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission in 1979. “The replacement 6/6 sliding sash windows are flanked by reproduction paneled shutters.”

It is recalled that while they owned La Grange, the Culbertsons lived in the tenant house. The large barn and a smaller tenant house on La Grange burned in 1973. Later, attorney Michael Ward was appointed substitute trustee for the Culbertsons. The property remained in the family until December 1991, when it was sold to Robert E. and Nancy C. Shostak. According to Prince William County land records, the Shostaks owned La Grange until October 2004, at which time they sold the house and land – now just 20 acres – to Lae Jin and Myeong Park.

The Winery at La Grange

On Dec. 9, 2005, PWC Winery LLC, trading as The Winery at La Grange, purchased the main house, existing outbuildings, and the 20 acres from Mr. and Mrs. Park. A partnership, PWC Winery LLC was headed by renowned vintner Chris Pearmund; Mr. Olszewski was one of the original 20 partners. “The place was a mess. It was all overgrown, trees had fallen, and there were problems in parts of the building. You should have seen all the old farm equipment, cattle troughs and other junk they pulled out of there,” said Mr. Olszewski. “They spent a lot of money cleaning the place up, and then rehabilitated – not just renovated – the house, adding modern conveniences.” Fletcher Henderson was also one of the original partners, and served as construction manager while the project to establish the winery was underway. He recalls that it cost $22,500 just to have the junk removed from the property. la grange continued on page 12 Haymarket Lifestyle

With the establishment of the vineyard, La Grange returned to its agricultural roots. The historic main house was remodeled for wine tastings and larger gatherings, and new buildings erected for processing the varieties of grapes grown on the seven-plus acres currently under cultivation. The Winery at La Grange opened in September 2006.

As for the future of La Grange and the historic Waterfall/Antioch area, Mr. Olszewski would like to see a historical marker placed at the main house describing the significance of the estate, and the accomplishments and contributions made by Benoni E. Harrison. He has already composed the information he would like to see on the sign:

According to the on-line trade publication Hagarty on Wine, Beida Jade Bird, a Chinese corporation based in Beijing, acquired The Winery at La Grange in January 2012. Today, it is a very busy place, with winemaking activities during the growing and harvesting seasons, and a parking lot full of the vehicles of visitors on weekends and holidays. In addition to wine tastings, tours of the main house and grounds are also offered.

La Grange

Mr. Henderson left La Grange briefly, but returned as the winery’s general manager and On-site Winemaker. Doug Fabbioli, a paid consulting winemaker, assists him.

This property was first deeded by Lord Fairfax to William Watkins in 1741. George Green acquired the property from William Hogan in 1788, and built the manor house that stands today. Benoni Evans Harrison, a self-taught lawyer, postmaster, merchant, Justice of the Peace, and County delegate to the Virginia General Assembly acquired the property in 1827 and named it La Grange. Harrison and his family are buried nearby. Only 20 acres remain of the original 300 acres and is now the home of the County’s first Virginia Farm winery. Mr. Olszewski’s effort to tell the full story of Benoni Harrison has been

recognized by the owners of LaGrange, who developed a special blended “Benoni’s Red” wine, as well as naming the tasting room, seating area on the lower level and an outdoor pavilion in his honor. In addition, a glass of wine is placed on an upstairs fireplace mantle every night, should the spirit of Benoni Harrison choose to make a visit. “Benoni was a unique individual, who has definitely stayed at La Grange throughout the ages, overseeing his beloved home,” said Leslie King. She remembers visiting La Grange several years ago when the place was in poor condition, and is pleased with the restoration, and the fact that the property is now in active agricultural use. “I also believe that Benoni is happy with what has been done with La Grange,” she added. For more information on Mr.Oszewski’s research and upcoming book release, please visit his website at www.olszewskienterprises.com.

Face-to-Face Therapy is a Relationship You Can Count On by: Esther Boykin

I was enjoying a day off at home last week when I caught a commercial for Dr. Phil. Apparently he was going to help a couple repair the damage caused by the husband’s affair. Now I must confess that I am not a big fan of Dr. Phil’s show and I did not watch the episode. I can’t comment on what happened between this couple or if the advice they got on the show was helpful but it did get me thinking… does anyone even need to see a therapist anymore? In this age of digital information overload and instant accessibility via social media, is there room for faceto-face counseling in our lives anymore? A quick Google search for “affairs” and “parenting help” turns up an endless listing of websites and articles, many of which promise the answer to your problems in 5 easy steps or less. There are Facebook pages and quizzes on medical websites that help you do everything from creating a behavior plan for your child’s ADD to diagnosing anxiety and depression. And then there is Twitter and Facebook and of course the traditional media sources like magazines and television shows, like Dr. Phil. All promising couples, families, and individuals the information that you may have thought you could only get from sitting on a couch for an hour each week with a professional. Let me be clear, I use these resources just like everyone else does. It’s amazing to get online and get the opinion of a wellrespected physician in a matter of seconds or read the latest research on an issue that is affecting you or someone you love. And when your life feels out of control, there is tremendous value in being able to instantly access information that can help you begin to address whatever is causing you pain (be it physical or emotional). But has all of this information and pseudo-psychology replaced the role of real-live therapy? At times it seems we have evolved into a society that doesn’t really need people other than our virtual BFFs and twitter followers. While the ease with which we can access information and resources has improved our lives and our health in significant ways, it’s also become a troubling obstacle. Rather than establish a trusting relationship with a family doctor, we run to WebMD’s symptom checker and possibly even order our antibiotics online. Instead of calling your mother to talk about how she managed the stress of married life, you read the latest list of 10 ways to 14

please your mate and hope for the best. And instead of seeking the care and guidance of a mental health professional, too often people are finding solace in online chat rooms or TV pop psychologists. These are not inherently dangerous choices. In fact I often encourage my clients to use the web and read books and articles in conjunction with our work. Information can be your greatest ally when facing difficult times. But our appetite for virtual connection and instant information also creates an isolated existence. Far too often people try to solve complex and emotionally overwhelming problems alone. It seems that many of us are adopting the idea that simply knowing how to treat depression is enough to fix it or that understanding the steps to rebuilding trust is enough to save a marriage after infidelity. The truth is that just as you wouldn’t expect that giving a child a calculus text book would be enough for them to begin solving parametric equations (yeah I had to Google that one!), so it is with our emotional health. Human relationships and psychological health is even more complex than calc. Improving relationships, understanding our unique psychological quirks, and resolving mental health disorders require more than just information. It requires a relationship. Research shows that the number one factor in predicting therapeutic success is the client-therapist relationship. A trusting connection with an educated and compassionate professional can be the difference between divorce and reconciliation. It can be the difference between effective parenting and an out-of-control child or between debilitating anxiety and a life well-lived. Even just a few sessions with the right therapist can be enough to help you get life on back on track, whatever your concerns or condition. I’m not telling you go and delete all those episodes of Couple Therapy from your DVR or stop visiting your favorite health and relationship websites or blogs. Information and virtual resources aren’t the enemy. Just don’t use them as a substitute for face-toface connection. Remember that your problems exist in a real world, not online or in print. Sometimes, no matter how great the advice from cyberspace, it’s just best to ask a real person for some real help. face to face continued on page 16 Haymarket Lifestyle

What does retirement mean to you? Traveling? A hobby? Volunteering, a new career or business? Or just more time with your grandchildren? Whatever your goal, you’ll need a retirement income plan that’s designed to support the lifestyle that you envision, and minimize the risk that you’ll outlive your savings. That’s where we come in. We ask questions and listen to you. Your goals, your concerns. Planning customized for you. As a fee-only firm, we work only for you. Your success is our success. Get in Touch: www.woodsmithadvisors.com.

1. Find help sooner rather than later. Try not to wait until you feel ready for divorce or are in an extreme crisis over a particular situation to finally ask for help. Starting therapy as soon as you notice you (or your child, or your spouse) are not making the changes needed on your own can mean shorter and more successful counseling. It is always better to be proactive than wait for things to get overwhelming. 2. Ask for referrals. Although counseling is not something that we discuss with everyone in our life, you’d be surprised how willing friends and family are to share their recommendations if they know a good therapist. If you can’t get a referral from a friend or health professional then consider using a reputable directory; preferably one that will check the therapists licensing credentials for you. Two to try are GoodTherapy.org (www.goodtherapy. org) and Psychology Today (www. therapists.psychologytoday.com). 3. Remember that successful therapy is built by a good working relationship with between you and your counselor. Don’t be afraid to interview a few to see who might be a good fit. Many therapists will offer a consultation or initial session as a time for you to make a decision. During the interview, ask about their approach to therapy and what you should expect in the initial sessions. It’s also helpful to ask questions that relate specifically to the issue that brought you in. 4. Therapy can be a comforting experience and also a difficult one. For many people new to the counseling process, it’s easy to become frustrated by the slow pace of change or the emotional turmoil that comes with exploring difficulty issues. Talk to your therapist about your concerns and ask for some guidance. Most importantly, don’t give up if it’s not what you expected. If all else fails, don’t be afraid to try a different therapist.

We help you sleep…and dream.

Warm Your Soul

Tired of being cold? Aruba doesn’t fit in your plans? There are warm, tropical places in the area that can give some relief. The United States Botanic Garden Conservatory, the Smithsonian Butterfly Pavilion and the indoor plant section of large garden stores all are warm, green and welcoming.

The first time I went to the U.S. Botanic Garden it was Christmas and this huge greenhouse was filled with red Poinsettias. It was warm in temperature and color and truly magical. The second time was in January after I moved here. I went with my girlfriend Mary Ellen who is as crazy about growing things as I am. We toured all of the different exhibits carrying our mittens, scarves and coats; found a bench on the second floor and spent over an hour just talking and enjoying being warm and surrounded by green. After that the Garden closed for several years for much needed renovations and repairs. It reopened with a new focus on teaching about plants along with showing collections of spectacular examples. The Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Avenue, SW; is open 10 to 5 daily and admission is free. Butterflies need warmth so it is a given that you can warm up quickly in the

Smithsonian Butterfly Pavilion. Here, in the middle of winter, you can be surrounded by exotic plants and live butterflies. Warm and humid and filled with flying colors this place can elevate anyone’s mood. There is a fee every day except Tuesday and reservations are strongly recommended. All of this can be taken care of at the Butterfly Pavilion Box Office. It is a magical experience. Gary and I rented an apartment for three months while our Haymarket house was being finished. It was on the first floor in the back of the building and perpetually dark. We referred to it as “The Cave.” Even the cat was showing signs of misery from sunlight deprivation. Whenever I felt myself becoming irrational I took the short drive over to Merrifields on 29 and spent as long as it took in their greenhouse to be able to smile again. Any garden store that is open year round has an area for indoor plants that is warm and sunny and highly restorative. While these areas can be almost too warm in the summer they are a blessing now. Whether it is a short stop in a garden store greenhouse or a day trip destination you can shake the cold out of your bones, breathe warm, humid air; see fabulous plants and wildlife in lots of special places in the Metro DC area.

Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www. TheGardenLady.biz.

JOURNALING CLUB COLLABORATION Teachers Jackie Kruchten and Mary Osburn from Reagan Middle School along with Vicki Burns from Battlefield High School, met in September and brainstormed on how to create an artistic collaboration between the two schools with the intent to provide opportunities to build upon each other’s art programs. An artistic partnership was created that day for Reagan and Specialized painting techniques for customizing backgrounds were Battlefield art students to share a passion for creating art. taught to the middle school students by NAHS members using NAHS members from BHS began this school year creating 2 acrylic paints. Students will continue to build on these surfaces accordion pocket portfolios each, one for themselves and one creating even more unique outcomes when they meet individually at for their journaling buddy they would meet later in the year. their own schools. NAHS students met their buddy for the first time on Tuesday, November 12th at Reagan Middle School. The middle school students in the newly created journaling club were hand selected to participate in this collaboration. Techniques and processes were taught by the high school students to inspire personal creations throughout the school year. The concept of “fodder,” recycled magazine images and text used as creative inspiration, was introduced as a starting point for creating miniature works of art known as “Artist Trading Cards.” ATC’s will be created throughout the school year. Using the county courier, students will be able to send these works of art to their artistic partners established at this first collaborative meeting. This first meeting was a huge success. Students have been very excited to meet their journaling buddies. Now that they have physically met and shared this creative experience, the students cannot wait to create works of art to share with each other.

When it comes to Fitness, Don’t be a

Sunshine PA T R I O T by Gunny Barker

Christmas, New Years and Valentines Day! What do these holidays all have in common? Lots and lots of food, sugar, fat, and tons of extra calories, which is exactly what you don’t need when you’re exercising less and sitting around more! When it comes to exercising, are you a “sunshine patriot?” During the harsh and cold winter of 1775, Thomas Paine cautioned young Countrymen not to be “summertime soldiers or sunshine patriots.” Well, as you know, the rest of the story is history, but did you know that these very same words can be applied to many people who seem to “give-up” on exercise as the days of autumn and winter become colder and shorter? Involved and passionate about the fitness industry for the past 25 years, I am here to tell you that I have witnessed this happen over and over again to many people each year. I work with clients who train relentlessly throughout the spring and summer, witnessing them make incredible changes in the appearance and conditions of their bodies, but as soon as the cold and dark days of winter arrive, many will unexplainably pack it in and head for the indoors, where they’ll hibernate and fatten-up like a bear throughout the winter. Why do many who exercise so earnestly throughout the year suddenly throw in the towel because of a few less hours of daylight and colder temperatures? To make matters worse, they are giving up on exercise at a time when they should actually be doing more instead of less. Why? For starters, I’ll give you five good reasons: Halloween, Thanksgiving, 28

Of course, you don’t need a degree in mathematics to figure out that consuming a lot more calories, coupled with little to no exercise, equates to a lot of blubber and a bigger waistline. Keep in mind, weight gain or weight loss all boils down to one thing, and that is calories-in vs. calories-out. During this time of year, all those comfort foods usually add up to a whole lot more calories taken in vs. those calories we burn off. This of course helps explain why the average American puts on an average of 10lbs over this 4 month period! If you’re looking to improve, or for that matter even maintain your current fitness level and body composition, your individual battle with Mother Nature cannot be fought eight months out of the year. The fact is folks, in order to stay healthy and fit, you must remain committed to exercise and proper nutrition throughout the entire year. Consistency in both nutrition and exercise are essential, and your absolute keys to maintaining a lean and fit body all year long. At Gladiator Boot Camp, our gladiators are well aware that their battle with fat must be fought not only every month, but each and every day of the year; and it cannot be won if we choose to eat right and exercise only on days when it’s convenient or when it’s sunny and 70. sunshine patriot continued on page 30 Haymarket Lifestyle

sunshine patriot continued from page 28

During the harsh and cold winter

of 1775,

Thomas Paine cautioned young Countrymen not to be “summertime soldiers or sunshine patriots.” HERE’S WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO:

Right now, I want you to envision what you want to look like next spring and start working towards that goal. Think about how great you’re going to look and feel when you shed those sweatpants and bulky sweater to reveal a lean and strong body that you’ve been working so hard to achieve all through winter. Go ahead---picture it right now! While you’re thrilled and proud of your new look and body, so many others will be complaining (whining) about how many pounds they’ve added and how out of shape they are as they stampede local gyms in search of summer membership specials. Unfortunately for most, it will be just another year of good intentions but few results. Don’t let it happen to you! The cold and dark days of winter are ahead of us and no doubt it could get nasty out there. Certainly, there could be some “times that try men’s souls” however, if you are dedicated, disciplined and committed to yourself and your goals, you will not only persevere, you will achieve victory!

HERE’S WHAT I RECOMMEND:

I encourage everyone to set a winter fitness goal, get started and stick to it! Most people make the major mistake of waiting until next spring to set their summertime goals, but by then it is already too late. Fitness experts agree that you need to allow a minimum of 12 weeks when setting new fitness and body composition goals, so be smart and start now. Do not make the mistake of packing on extra pounds this winter and then try and make up for it next spring by doing endless bouts of (boring) cardio next spring. Trust me, this approach never works because you end up pushing yourself way too hard, too fast and end up either overtraining, burning out or even worse - injuring yourself. Don’t be naive and expect changes to occur overnight. Set your spring and summer time goals now and begin working on them to allow yourself the needed time to achieve them.

EAST OCEAN CHINESE RESTAURANT

Opening six months ago in the expanding Trading Square Shopping Center, this family owned and operated establishment is providing Haymarket residents with a new stylish dining experience. The husband and wife team, Chunsi and Wei Lin opened East Ocean Chinese Restaurant to create a space where families and friends could gather to enjoy freshly prepared Chinese dishes in a contemporary setting. Cheerful blues and purples dress the walls and welcome guests, while their plush leather seating tempts guests to stay instead of carrying out. “We tried looking at other locations, this place is still new and still growing up,” said Lin when deciding on Haymarket as their home.

Their Egg Rolls, Crab Rangoon and Beef on a Stick are perfect to start with. The Dumpling (steamed or fried) is also a favorite and pairs well with their Egg Drop Soup or Hot & Sour Soup. “People just love our Hot & Sour Soup,” Lin mentioned. The menu offers various options for fried rice too. Their traditional Fried Rice can be tossed with meat of your choice as well as vegetables and tofu. The Lo Mein and Noodle dishes offer the same customization and combinations. The Thai Basil Fried Rice and the Singapore Rice Noodle feature a kick of heat in every bite. Providing options for every taste, East Ocean boasts an expansive menu with main dishes that include chicken, beef, lamb, pork and seafood as well as vegetables and tofu. General Tso’s and Curry Mango are two of their most popular chicken dishes along with the Kung Pao and Sweet & Sour Chicken. Lin mentioned that the Curry Mango Chicken quickly became a frequently ordered item when it was introduced. “It’s the perfect sweet and spicy mix.” The Hunan style beef, lamb and pork are all excellent choices. The Black Pepper Beef, Pork with Garlic Sauce, and Sha Cha Shrimp are all notable for their added spice. “My favorite is the Crispy Beef,” Lin said. “I could eat it every day!” In addition the menu has options for vegetarians and those wanting to be health conscious. Their Szechuan String Beans and the Moo Shu Vegetable dishes are filling and flavorful. They offer steamed vegetable dishes with your choice of sauce. Tofu is also available as a main dish or can be added as a substitution.

“We do sell a lot of Tofu,” Lin said. “The most popular is General Tso’s, a lot of our customers will try that.” East Ocean is located at 6438 Trading Square near Kabul Kabob House and Penn Station East Coast Subs. They are open seven days a week Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 10:00pm, Friday 11:00am to 10:30pm, Saturday 11:30am to 10:30pm and Sunday 11:30am to 9:30pm. Their daily specials are listed on the website and kids (ages 9 and under) who dine-in eat free. They offer dine-in, delivery, carry out and catering services. Be sure to check out their offerings this month for the Chinese New Year happening on January 31, 2014. For more information on East Ocean please visit their website at www.eastoceanva.com or place an order by calling (703) 753-1201 or (703) 753-1202.
