A Guide to Effective Resume Writing and Job Search for Beginners By Jean L. and Dennis A. Taylor
You don’t have much experience, or maybe none at all…so how do you attract the attention of employers when looking for summer employment or a permanent job…? It’s a jungle out there, but with some basic tools, a good attitude, solid work ethic and some face time you can and will get hired! Here are 12 tips to move you in the right direction:
The “Paperwork”
Resumes are designed to get you an interview. Interviews are designed to get you hired. Having a clean, uncluttered and completely factual resume is crucial. Never, ever, exaggerate or add false statements to your resume – this document is intended to be a chronology of what you have actually done in your career, even if you are just starting out. Tap into and use any and all tangible experience – church projects, Girl or Boy Scout activities, leadership roles you had in high school, part-time jobs, etc. Even mowing lawns or raking leaves counts! There are a million different resume formats so just think about what you would want to see if you were the employer. Thinking “easy to navigate and read” is always a great choice. Your resume should not exceed two pages; in fact one is preferable, even if you have 30 years of experience. Quality is much more important than quantity!
The “Sales Pitch”
For a beginning job seeker (actually, for any job seeker) having a compelling cover letter is often more important than your resume. The cover letter is your sales pitch – this is your chance to talk about key “hot buttons” that today’s employers look for…a solid work ethic, your commitment to show up every day and on time, your willingness to work weekends and overtime if and when necessary, and to go the extra mile for the customer. The greatest concern employers have when it comes to young/entry level employees is their work ethic, overcome that objection and you are surely in!
Seek Advice
Ask people you know, love and trust to critique your resume and cover letter. Ask people you don’t know well at all to critique your resume and cover letter. Make tweaks accordingly and measure your results and the reactions you receive.
The “On-Line Job Jungle”
Applying to blind ads, sending resumes to unknown fax machines, and filling out endless applications on-line is one way to find a job…but it is far from the best way. The competition is fierce, there is seldom any form of response (other than an occasional form letter), and you can waste a whole lot of time hoping. You should strive to express yourself, in person, and not rely on electronic channels as your only source of leads.
Look the Part
Put the flip-flops in the closet, those are for the pool. Toss the jeans and tank top; they are not in any way impressive to employers. It’s time to get serious – you don’t need to wear a suit but you do need to dress professionally (that means clean, pressed, coordinated, and muted clothing). Stand up straight, smile, always deliver a firm handshake and maintain eye contact – these little things can make a huge difference. effective resume continued on page 10 8

As we have seen patients of all ages developing obesity and consequently diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other illnesses as a result of their weight, we have sought ways to help without the use of potentially dangerous medications. After extensive research into weight loss methods, we have chosen to implement a Medically Supervised Weight Loss Protocol in our office this past March of 2013. This program has a firm scientific base and has been working tremendously to help our patients lose weight, cut back and in some cases stop medications. For information on our Weight Loss Protocol, please call the Weight Loss Clinic directly at 571-248-2652 and check out the website at www.IdealWeightLossGainesville.com

Meet and Greet!
Network; attend social and business gatherings (business groups like the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, the Southern Fauquier Business Owners Association and the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce welcome guests to their mixers, luncheons and evening events). Gather your confidence and attend with the intent of meeting as many small, family-owned business owners and managers as you can. Take some copies of your resume with you, but you don’t need to ask these folks for a job, instead ask them for help and guidance as they often know who is hiring. They can help you with networking and introductions. Show off your personality and practice your firm handshake and eye contact.
Give Back Before You Get — Volunteer.
Find a worthy cause, one you believe in, and offer your services, for free – this will help you acquire real-world work experience and references, and you never know, you might just get hired as paid staff after you prove yourself! Don’t forget to ask for a letter of recommendation on the letterhead of the organization; testimonials are the best form of advertising your skills and work ethic!
Connect with the Professionals
Register with local employment agencies and temporary service firms, many companies use these services to acquire pre-screened personnel without having to wade through hundreds of resumes. There is no fee to you as an applicant and if an interview is arranged for you there is a good chance you will be seriously considered.
Use the Tools
Use on-line tools (LinkedIn, Facebook for Business, Branch Out, etc.) to do research and make connections. Investigate and reach out to firms in your geographic area – express interest and ask if you can make an appointment to come by and introduce yourself. Work toward making deeper connections with employers – most hires are made on personality and the genuine feeling of the parties “liking” each other.
Stay the Course
Every “No” you hear means that you are that much closer to a “Yes!” Keep your chin up — you are valuable, worthy and there are opportunities out there for you, but you have to keep going and find your reward.
Saying Thanks
Always send a (clearly) hand written thank you note to anyone and everyone you meet and to everyone who helps you. Collect business cards, get some nice quality thank you cards and some stamps, and send thoughtful notes expressing your thanks and appreciation. This tip alone may set you apart from every other candidate out there resulting in the job of your dreams!
Say “Thank You” Again and Ask for the Job!
Even if you are not sure this is the job for you, sincerely thank the interviewer and ask for the job! It’s easier to turn down a job offer than to not get one at all! Job offers build confidence! Everyone starts somewhere, and hopefully with these tips you will have a much better than average chance of landing a fulfilling opportunity; one that might just last for many, many years to come! May your job search be interesting, meaningful and fruitful.

Fauquier Health Summer is the Perfect Time to Eat Healthy Fauquier Health routinely conducts a community health needs assessment to determine the health needs of the area; obesity—along with all its unhealthy ramifications—is indeed a serious problem. Healthy eating is an important way to combat the problem, and Fauquier Health has developed several initiatives to promote wellness – deliciously. Farmers Market As a way to promote healthy, fresh local foods, the hospital hosts the Warrenton Farmers Market on Hospital Hill every Wednesday morning in the spring, summer and early fall. The Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering the season’s best produce, locally produced meats and other summertime specialties. Through a grant from the Fauquier Health Foundation, residents who are part of the Fauquier Free Clinic’s Diabetes Management program receive vouchers to shop at the Farmers Market, so they are able to see how eating fresh, local food can impact their health. Tony DeWalt, executive chef at the Bistro, gives a cooking demonstration every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Bistro, using fresh produce chosen from Farmers Market vendors. After watching Tony work his magic, those watching the demos still have time to stop by the market and buy supplies to replicate the dish at home. Chefs Programs The Junior Chef program is one way Fauquier Health is reaching out to children to teach them healthy habits. The program allows those aged 10 to 18 to visit with the Bistro’s executive chef and other culinary experts, learning how to cook fresh, healthy foods. The program is held one Saturday each month. When Fauquier Health announced its Junior Chef program on its Facebook page, there was an outcry from adult wannabe cooks who shouted, “What about us?” Answering that call, Bistro chefs will begin holding monthly cooking lessons for adults too, beginning July 20. Registration for either program may be arranged by calling 540316-3588 or visiting www.fauquierhealth.org.
of the community is an initiative called Let’s Get Movin’. In cooperation with Fauquier Community Child Care, exercise and healthy eating experts work with children to show them the benefits—and fun—of healthy living. This project— run as a pilot last summer—is funded through several community sponsors who care deeply about the health of our young people. This year, the program will expand to include field trips sponsored by the Warrenton Garden Club. Children will visit the hospital on Tony DeWalt, executive chef at Wednesday mornings, when the the Bistro on the Hill restaurant, Warrenton Farmers Market is on the Hospital Hill campus. Students gives a cooking demonstration will learn about fresh, local foods; every Wednesday in the Bistro, during the Farmers Market. talk with the local farmers selling their wares; and experience the excitement of an open-air market. Children will also visit the organic Culinary Healing Garden on the patio of the Bistro on the Hill, which provides fresh produce for patients and Bistro patrons. The Bistro’s executive chef and garden staff will talk about how to plant and grow a garden. Employee Wellness Programs Employees at Fauquier Health are encouraged to adopt healthy habits through an extensive employee wellness program. Employees earn incentives to eat right, exercise, and reduce their stress. Staffers recently completed a Veggie Up program where they logged at least three cups of fruits or veggies a day for eight weeks.
Senior Supper Club The twice-weekly Senior Supper Club provides healthy meals to those 55 and older at a reduced price. More than 200 meals are served every week through this program. Our seniors love that they can gather with friends and get a complete meal – with lots of choices – for only $5.
Need Help with Diabetes Management?
Culinary Healing Garden Fauquier Hospital grows an organic Culinary Healing Garden in five raised garden beds next to its Bistro on the Hill, providing fresh produce for patients and Bistro patrons. The veggies and herbs chosen daily from the garden brighten patients’ meals and add freshness to entrees enjoyed by visitors in the Bistro.

Healthy
All in the Family by Colby Schreckengost BS, MS, CPT
In my profession, we have a tremendous opportunity to have a positive influence on a lot of people. But, there are 168 hours in a week and we only see our clients an average of three of those hours. Depending on the client’s age and the program in which they are participating that’s approximately 4% of an individual’s week that we have their full attention and direct impact on their lives. The rest of the 164 hours we count on clients to take what they have learned and apply it to their lives. But, during those same hours, they are also influenced by family, friends, co-workers and the media. THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN! Think about it. What happens when my clients go home and continue their crazy-busy lives of going to work, school, sports practice, scouts, music lessons, concerts and running errands? The influence now falls back on their family and other people in their lives. So, as you can imagine, it isn’t easy to adopt good habits when those around you don’t have them. You have the opportunity to create a positive impact on your entire family - spouse, kids, your parents, your brothers, sisters, and coworkers. To me, nothing is more gratifying than seeing a family getting healthy together. At Next Level, we currently have over 20 families training with us. It really sends a strong message and it’s really powerful. Not only are families getting healthy together, but the fact that the entire family is working out gives them a common bond and something to talk about at the breakfast or dinner table. Whether it’s gym workouts, sporting events or outdoor activities; it’s all great family fun. It’s interesting how it gets started in different families. So let’s take a look at some of the family influencer’s and the way it all works.
Top-Down Approach:
Most of the time family influence comes from the top down. The leader of the house sets the tone. If the leader is working out and staying active the rest of the family is more inclined to do so. If the leader is inactive and a real couch potato, the family tends to be less active. It’s really hard to ask your kids to do something that they don’t see you doing. Leading by example is a positive way to get the family active. Not only working out and playing sports but activities like family bike rides, long dog walks or morning hikes in the Shenandoah Mountains can create great bonding times and lasting memories.
Bottom-Up Approach:
With all of the young people that we’re training these days, we’ve seen trends where kids are having influence on their parents to be more active. Young athletes will start training at our facility and the parent will just watch for a few weeks. Alongside our athlete training session is usually an adult group working out. Parents will say, “hey, that looks like fun” and the next thing you know parents and kids are working out on the same training floor doing similar exercises but with their own peer group. On the ride home after the training session, they share their experience; like how challenging their workout was and how fun the trainers were.
Spouse Influence:
Another trend we’re seeing at our facility is increasingly more couples training together. Generally, it is the wife starting with us and then she encourages her husband to give it a try. Before you know it they’re both training and spending time together doing something productive, healthy and fun. Dinner conversations include discussions of the day’s workout instead of how awful work was or how crappy their boss treats them. It’s happy hour without the wine! But, it’s not just the working out and the sports activities that keep people healthy; nutrition plays a huge role. family continued on page 16

Nutrition:
One of the things I hear from clients trying to lose weight “I have to prepare two meals, a healthy dinner for me and mac and cheese for my kids because they won’t eat what I eat.” To this I always say “If processed foods are not good for you, do you think they’re good your kids?” Keep trying different clean eating options. Don’t give up! You will find something they like. And, keep trying until you do. One of my clients recently told me they finally convinced her 11 year-old daughter to try salmon and the kid loved it!
Time:
“We don’t have time to eat healthy; we’re always running to this event or that. We just hit the drive thru!” I get it. We’re all busy. Here are a few nutritional strategies to help with the chaos: ● Quick healthy breakfast: the most important meal of the day. Try microwave scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, oat meal or Greek yogurt and fresh fruit, millet bread toast or banana with peanut or almond butter or a fresh fruit smoothie in a blender. Avoid cereal; there are a lot of studies out now that discourage wheat products in our diet. ● Cook your dinner meals for the entire week on Sunday and stock the fridge. So you’re just heating dinner up when you get home. Get the kids involved in the cooking and teach them how to cook healthy. You’ll be surprised once they get involved how much they’ll get into it. Eat dinner at home; even if it’s late. If it’s healthy, it’s all good. And, it gives the family a chance to circle up and talk about their day. Stay connected! ● Keep healthy snacks in the car! If you feel like a taxi driver most evenings, carry a cooler stocked with bottled water, nuts, seeds, grapes, apples, pears, oranges or bananas. Greek yogurt and string cheese also make a good snack. These snacks will keep you nourished, hydrated, and give you energy. Healthy snacking also keeps your metabolism fired up and keeps your body from starving and trying to store nutrients as fat! ● Make small changes! Be careful with overweight family members-it can be a touchy subject. Try to incorporate one or two small changes like reducing soft drink intake and adding more water to their daily routine.
Get the family involved with these tips: • Ask your kids how they feel after a practice or a workout! • Talk with your family about how great YOU feel after a workout and how much fun you had during your training session. It’s a subtle way to get your spouse going instead of just nagging them to start exercising. They have to want to start. Once they get going amazing things can happen! • Give them positive support. Even if it’s an activity that they don’t excel at; the fact that they are out there giving it their best is what really matters. • Keep trying new healthy recipes until you find food that tastes good and is good for the whole family. • Cook with your spouse and kids: Ask for help and give them tasks that they’ll think are interesting i.e. (making fruit smoothies or homemade salad dressings in the blender) • Find short articles on healthy snacking and the affects it can have on your, performance on the job or on the playing field. Discover what motivates them. • Avoid the drive thru with on-the-go healthy snacks. • Small changes have big impacts! Drinking more water, getting to bed earlier, eating a good breakfast: start with one!
Recently, one of our clients told me that her husband started training because she talked so positively about her experience instead of begging him to workout. She said, “He had to want to do it. It had to be his idea, and on his time frame.” They’re experience has to be positive so that they want to continue. Getting started is 90% of it!

HAYMARKET GAINESVILLE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
Get in the Know: Hurricane Season The Mid-Atlantic region has seen some tough hurricane seasons over the past 5 years. While proper insurance coverage doesn’t normally seem to be a priority, it does become top-of-mind when severe storms are looming. If you have concerns about rain water, heavy winds, fallen trees, and lost power, “Am I covered?” is much easier to address before damage is done. As hurricane season approaches, keep these six things in mind: 1. BE PREPARED. In the event of a catastrophic claim, how great would it be to have pre-disaster video/photographs of your home to share with your insurance claims adjuster? This is a relatively simple task to accomplish these days. Spending an hour walking around your home taking video inventory of your personal contents as well as video/photos of your home will save you a ton of time scrambling for receipts to show your adjuster. 2. KNOW YOUR DEDUCTIBLE. Most of you know that your home insurance policy has a deductible, usually $500 or $1000. What you may not be aware of is that a few companies’ policies carry a much larger “Hurricane Deductible” which is a percentage of your dwelling coverage. Example: Your dwelling coverage on your home insurance is $400,000 and you have a 2% Hurricane Deductible. This means that you’ll be paying for the first $8,000 worth of damage resulting from a hurricane. Brace yourself… some policies carry a 5% deductible ($20,000). Yikes. 3. KNOW THAT FLOOD IS NOT COVERED. Most insurance policies exclude flood damage. In order for this to be covered, you need to purchase this coverage separately through your insurance
agent. Coverage is available for your dwelling as well as contents of your home. IMPORTANT: Flood insurance typically carries a 30-day waiting period. So if you call your agent the day before the hurricane is arriving, you will likely be out of luck. 4. TAKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES. If you sustain wind damage and can safely prevent further damage from occurring through the use of tarps and covers, do it! Save receipts from any materials used…most insurance companies will reimburse you. 5. YOUR NEIGHBOR’S TREE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. It’s hard for some people to believe, but if your neighbor’s tree falls on your home, YOUR insurance would pay for the damage to your home, not theirs. If you suspect a neighbor’s tree is dying or threatening to come down, you need to notify them of this in writing (if you’re nervous about the formality of sending them a letter, blame it on me) so that if the tree does fall down, you may be able to hold them accountable. 6. DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR CAR. Assuming you have Comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, you should be covered if the next hurricane knocks a tree over on your car.

History
Gainesville: Forever on the beaten path Part 1: A community at the intersection of two main roads and a railroad By John T. Toler As Gainesville residents and drivers on U.S. 29 can attest, the $267 million highway project to ease congestion at Linton Hall Road and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks can’t be finished soon enough. The massive construction project – currently the largest in Virginia – is scheduled to be completed in late 2014. There will be two overpasses: one carrying U.S. 29 traffic over the railroad tracks, and the other carrying Linton Hall and Gallerher Road traffic over the tracks and U.S. 29. Additional improvements include widening U.S. 29 to six lanes, and eliminating driveway entrances and two traffic signals between I-66 and Virginia Oaks Drive. The highway project and recent commercial development have changed the topography and skyline of Gainesville, and the evolution will continue as planned commercial development along Linton Hall Road and between Route 55 and I-66 is completed. In spite of all that has changed, Gainesville has a long and interesting history, which reveals stronger ties to the present then many people realize.
The ‘Middle Grounds’
In earlier times, the village that became known as “Gainesville” actually had two other names, if only briefly. In colonial days, the region was known as the “Middle Grounds,” in reference to its location between Broad Run and Bull Run. 24
In the 1700s, a settlement took root at the intersection of the Shenandoah to Dumfries road, which ran east-west, crossing at Linton’s Ford, and the Alexandria to Orange road, that ran north-south. In the early 1800s, Samuel Love of Buckland Hall started work on the WarrentonAlexandria Turnpike. In the hamlet where the turnpike passed through the Middle Grounds, a new stable was erected for stagecoach drivers to switch horses. Other businesses followed, and the settlement became known as New Stable. In 1846, a post office by that name was opened there in Richard Graham’s hotel and store. Mr. Graham also operated a large stable that catered to the drovers and stage drivers and other less pretentious travelers. “Predictably, Mr. Graham was the first postmaster, and he remained on the job when the village became Beckhamsville, named for Cicero Beckham, fifteen days later,” wrote historian Eugene M. Scheel in Crossroads and Corners: A Tour of the Villages, Towns and Post Offices of Prince William County, Virginia (1996). “That post office was discontinued on the last day of the year.” In addition to Graham’s hotel, travelers were accommodated at the tavern run by Richard O. Shirley (1802-1857), and later by his widow, Susan Shirley (1813-1880). The Shirley’s tavern “…was somewhat the prototype of the modern tourist home, in that its guests were restricted

to stage passengers and transients,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places and Its People (1941). Shirley family descendant James K. Shirley of Marshall recalls that for years their family cemetery was hidden in a thicket off Linton Hall Road. When a shopping center parking lot was built around it, the cemetery was cleaned up and became a fenced green space. The coming of the Manassas Gap Railroad in the 1850s was a major turning point for the stagecoach line – which would go out of business – and Beckhamsville, which would get a new name, and a road to prosperity. The person responsible for bringing the railroad through the village was Thomas Brawner Gaines (1814-1856), who had begun buying up property in the area as early as 1835, and later became a major landowner.
“Thomas Gaines, canny Welshman that he was, and owner of the area where the Manassas Gap Railroad sought right-of-way, insisted that all passenger trains should stop there, and that the place should be called Gainesville,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places and Its People. Actually, “canny Welshman” Thomas Gaines’ family had already been in America for six generations, settling first in New Kent County, Va. in the 1670s. Later generations lived in King and Queen County and Culpeper County before coming to Prince William. Thomas was married to Mary Cundiff Gaines (1811-1880), and they had three children: Malina Somerville (18361913), John Pendleton (18401913) and Thomas B. (18481875).

The Gaines family lived in a house built in the 1830s on a tract of land bordered by present-day Catharpin Road and Route 55. Thomas Gaines lived to see the railroad built across his land in 1852 and the village named for his family, but he died young, in 1856. “By this time, Gainesville had become the leading market town of the Middle Grounds, a shipping point for grain, timber and stock,” according to Mr. Scheel.
Civil War action around Gainesville
After Confederate forces moved south from Centreville in the spring of 1862, Gainesville was occupied from time-to-time by Union troops. But the actual fighting came to the vicinity of the village in late August 1862, as forces from both sides moved into position for the epic Battle of Second Manassas. The army of Confederate Gen. T. J. “Stonewall” Jackson had quietly come into Prince William, and on Aug. 26, cut off Union Gen. John Pope’s railroad supply line on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad at Bristow, and the following day, destroyed Pope’s supply depot at Manassas Junction. After completing the raid, Jackson’s men vanished into the countryside. On the morning of Aug. 28, 1862, elements of Pope’s army searched the area for Jackson, joined by Union forces under Gen. Franz Siegel, but to no avail. Jackson had left Manassas before dawn, circling north along Bull Run and taking a position along an abandoned railroad cut in a heavily wooded area between Gainesville and Sudley. Unbeknownst to the Union generals, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. James Longstreet 26

were moving their armies from the west toward Manassas to back up Jackson, and confronted Union troops under Brig. Gen. James Ricketts at Thoroughfare Gap. A pitched battle took place there on the afternoon of Aug. 28, 1862. The Confederates drove the Union forces out of the Gap, pushing them back toward Haymarket and Gainesville. “That evening, while Lee and Longstreet were near at hand at Thoroughfare Gap, Jackson brought on the Battle of Gainesville in an effort to prevent Pope from moving eastward, where he would be greatly reinforced by McClellan,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its People and Its Places. From his protected position, Jackson waited until the middle of a column of McClellan’s troops – moving eastward on the Warrenton Turnpike – was in range. At about 6 p.m., the Confederates opened fire, attacking Wisconsin brigades led by Gen. John Gibbons, and New York brigades under Gen. M. R. Patrick and Gen. Abner Doubleday. The Battle of Gainesville, also known as the Battle of Brawner’s Farm, lasted two
ferocious hours. At one point, the federals launched a counter-attack, and Confederate troops under Gen. Alexander Lawton and Gen. Isaac R. Trimble were called into reinforce Jackson’s men. “The losses on both sides were frightful. Gibbon’s brigade lost almost 800 killed or wounded. The 2nd Wisconsin lost 276 men out of the 430 who went into the line, and 21 of their wounded were hit at least twice,” according to Robert Thomson in A Legend is Born at Brawner’s Farm: the Iron Brigade at Second Manassas. “On the other side, in addition to Lawton and Trimble’s horrific losses, the Stonewall brigade had lost 340 men out of 800, a 40 percent casualty rate. In fact, so fierce was the fighting in those two hours along the Warrenton Pike, that one in every three men engaged was hit at least once.” Confederate losses also included the wounding of one of Jackson’s division commanders. Gen. Richard Ewell was wounded in the left leg, requiring amputation below the knee. He was first cared for at the home of his cousin, Dr. Jesse Ewell at Dunblane, north
of Haymarket, before being evacuated further south. After Second Manassas, Gen. Siegel had his headquarters in Gainesville, occupying the Gaines home for several months. It was there in November 1862 that the court martial hearings were held for the Union soldiers involved in the burning of Haymarket on the night of Nov. 3-4, 1862 (See Haymarket Lifestyle, Nov. 2011) The Gaines family remained in Gainesville throughout the Civil War, but their home “… served as headquarters for Union general officers and staff, including Gen. Rufus King in the spring of 1862, Gen. Franz Sigel in the autumn of 1862, and Col. S.S. Carroll in early 1863,” according to a study conducted by Wetlands Studies and Solutions Inc. of Gainesville. “The dwelling and core area of the site was also used as a Union military hospital for five weeks in the fall of 1863, during the Bristoe campaign.”

of the South, was under federal control. Slavery was gone, and gradually a “new normal” was established. Prince William County was divided into six magisterial districts, including the Gainesville District that included most of the northern end of the county. The county’s public school system was established in 1870, following the passage of Virginia’s Public Education Act. Gainesville School District originally consisted of six schools for white students (Buckland, Catharpin, Gainesville, Hickory Grove, Waterfall and Thoroughfare/ white), and three schools for black students (Antioch, Macrae and Thoroughfare/ black). Four more schools were built in the Gainesville District in the 1880s: Mill Park, Haymarket and Piney Branch for white students, and North Fork for black students. With the exception of the Gainesville
Elementary School, which closed in the early 1900s due to falling enrollment, these one-room schools would serve the district until they were consolidated in the 1920s. “Maintaining adequate enrollment was a long-standing problem at Gainesville in its early years,” wrote Lucy Walsh Phinney in Yesterday’s Schools. “The School Board even agreed to offer premiums of $5.00 to white teachers who achieved the highest enrollment for the 1893-94 school year.” In 1904, the unused Gainesville Elementary School building was sold for $150, and subsequently turned into a residence. The Gaines family built a racetrack on their property that was remembered as one of the best in Virginia. Sometime in the early 1870s, the original Gaines home was destroyed by fire, and a new house erected near the site. Mrs. Gaines died in 1880, and Miss Somerville Gaines became mistress of the property.

Miss Somerville Gaines gave land, including the Gaines family cemetery, to the congregation of the Gainesville Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1883. The church was built there in 1884-86.
In 1883, Miss Gaines gave members of the Gainesville Methodist Episcopal Church, South an acre of land, including the Gaines family cemetery, as the site for their church – a rare example of the graveyard existing before the church. Work started on the church in 1884, and was completed in 1886. In the years to come, the Gainesville Methodist Church grew, and the graveyard was expanded as the final resting place for many of its members. Mrs. Evelyn Lunsford, 90, a long-time member of the church, recalls that when Miss Gaines gave the additional land so that the cemetery could be expanded, it was understood that only members of the Gaines family could be buried in the original section on the east side of the church, and everyone else buried in the new section on the west side. Space in the church was limited, and even with the addition of a fellowship hall in the 1950s, it was still too small. In 2005, the congregation moved to a new building on Milestone Court, which was consecrated on April 30, 2006. The church has retained ownership of the cemetery and the old church building, which is currently used by the congregations of Trinity Life Church on Sunday mornings, and Vision Community Church in the afternoon.
A regrettable incident A double killing occurred in Gainesville early on the morning of March 18, 1892 that was remembered by residents of the area for many years – even though no one from Prince William County was involved. Two accused murderers from Fauquier County were being brought to the train station in Gainesville when they were overtaken by an angry mob, and lynched. Lee R. Heflin of Stafford and Joseph Dye of Calverton were accused of killing Mrs. James W. Kines, a young widow, and her three children at their home near Calverton on the night of Nov. 9, 1891. The alleged motive was a robbery, which cost four innocent lives and yielded the killers only $70. Investigators soon narrowed the search to Dye, who lived on a nearby farm, and Heflin, who had started working at the Dye farm just the day before the murders. The suspects were incarcerated in the county jail in Warrenton, and indicted by a grand jury. However, when the cases went to trial, legal maneuvering by the suspects’ attorneys caused a furor in the community. For a while Heflin and Dye were held in the jail at Alexandria, returning to Warrenton for trial. When one of the defense gainesville continued on page 30 Haymarket Lifestyle

attorneys faked illness in order to slow the proceedings, people were enraged. Fauquier Jailor C.M. Pattie was concerned about violence, and arranged for the suspects to be taken to Alexandria by train. But he first had to get them to the station at Gainesville. Late in the night of March 17, 1892, Heflin and Dye were hidden in a wagon, and accompanied by two guards, departed Warrenton. About an hour after they left, an angry mob stormed the jail. Learning that the prisoners were gone, they made fast up the turnpike, catching up with the wagon just south of Gainesville, near the home of Haywood Triplett. The guards were overwhelmed, and the mob hanged Dye from one tree, and Heflin from another. To be certain that the men were dead, they shot Dye eight times, and Heflin four times. Their mission accomplished, the mob returned to Warrenton down the Greenwich Road. The guards fled to Haymarket, where they spent the night. The bodies were found the next morning, and residents of Gainesville were horrified and demanded a full investigation. A grand jury was empanelled in April, but no one was ever charged. Years later, a tree that stood in the median of U.S. 29 in front of the present-day CVS pharmacy in Gainesville was known as “the hanging tree.”
The Manadier Sanitarium Sometime before 1908, Miss Somerville Gaines sold the
family home and 34 acres to Mrs. Margaret Mayan. According to the VHLC survey, shortly after completing the transaction Mrs. Mayan donated the property to a charitable and benevolent association called the Manadier Sanitarium for use as a hospital. Trustees of the association some of the most influential members of the Haymarket and Gainesville communities: William M. Jordan, C.E. Keyser, George G. Tyler, Macon Cave, and Col. Newland T. DePauw. Rev. Cary Gamble, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Haymarket, was the ex-officio chairman. Terms of the donation specified that if the sanitarium failed, the property would revert to the Protestant Episcopal Education Society, and that “…the property could never be used as a place for gaming or gaming devices, or the manufacture or sale of intoxicating liquors.” The venture never got off the ground, and the property was returned to Mrs. Mayan. She sold the house and land to Haymarket physician Dr. Wade C. Payne in 1914. Miss Somerville Gaines and her brother John P. Gaines both died in 1913, the last two family members of their generation. Miss Gaines was buried in the family graveyard, and John in Occoquan. Part 2, to be published in August, deals with Gainesville in the 20th century, and the impact of the most recent changes.
A UNIQUE HOME, LONG GONE In 1981, a survey of the 1875 Gaines house was conducted for the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, with photographs of the property taken by former Prince William County Architectural Historian Frances Jones. Following are details from the survey of the property, identified as File 76-152. “The Gaines house is a large Victorian, T-shaped, rambling, 2½-story frame house. There is probably no other house like it in Prince William County. The main house probably contains about 15 rooms. There is a small, two-story addition attached to the main house, which contains three or more rooms. The steeply pitched gable roof, plain bracketed cornice and half-timber ‘stick-style’ gable ends are some of the house’s more striking architectural and stylistic features. “A one-story open porch wraps around part of the front and west side of the house, and the front façade features a 10-foot wide bay window on the first floor, and a ‘porthole’ window on the second floor. The house is covered with channeled siding, and has double cornerboards. A small guest house, or possibly a separate kitchen, is located on the house’s northwest corner.” The survey also mentions other outbuildings, including “… a play house or office, with a cruciform roof, a shed with a gable roof, a cinderblock barn with a gambrel roof, and a 30-ft. by 70-ft. wooden barn.” It was noted that no farming was being done on the land, that the structures on the property were in very dilapidated condition, and “…the owners have no intention of repairing it, hoping instead to develop the 19-acre tract that the house sits on.” The Gaines property passed through several hands during the 20th century, the last several years as an investment property. James Shirley, who has lived in the area since 1970, recalls seeing the house when it still could have been saved, and wishes that it had been. Today, all of the buildings are gone, and the site is part of a 99-acre tract between I-66 and U.S. 29 assembled by Lerner Enterprises of Rockville, Md. for future development. According to the Lerner Web site, “planning and design is in progress” for a project called “The Grove at Gainesville.” Included in the plan are over one million square feet of retail, entertainment, hotel and office space in an “OpenAir Main Street Setting.”

This spring I have been really happy about having two, kind of quirky, trees. One is light and white, the other is dense and dark. I’m glad I didn’t plant them near each other because I think they would have fought with each other and canceled out each other’s impact. I like them better as stand alone feature plants. The first is White Fringetree. It is small and not very commanding most of the year. It’s leaves are medium green and a simple shape. It’s bark is smooth and gray brown. But when my Fringetree blooms it is spectacular. It has flowers that are amazing. They are long and narrow – hence the name – and fragrant. The fragrance is somewhere between Magnolia and Honeysuckle. At dusk, because of the white flowers, it glows. This is not a long lived show but I enjoy it every day when it is in bloom and eagerly await it’s coming next year. The other tree is called Smokebush. Technically I guess it is a shrub but right now it is bigger than my Fringetree. The foliage comes in different colors but the most dramatic is the dark purple. The leaves are round and as much as three inches wide. The real show happens when the small flowers fade and long, thin hairlike stalks emerge. They appear in large bunches and look just like puffs of smoke - to the touch they are light and dry. On top of all this I have never had any problem with deer eating it.
