COUCH T

“We all have dreams, in order to make dreams come into reality; it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort.” - Jesse Owens (Olympic Gold-Medalist runner) By Heather Lucas, DC

Do you feel like you’ve become a couch potato? Have you wanted to exercise but don’t know where to start? Running is inexpensive and a good way to be healthy, feel good and even lose weight. Many people have gotten turned off of running because they start off too fast. You should ease into running gradually. Provided is a 5K training program to help you get across the finish line. This program assumes you do not have any major health problems; it is recommended that you check with a health care provider prior to beginning any exercise program for the first time. RECOMMENDATIONS: • Find a time to run that works best for your schedule; this will help you stay committed. Try to avoid running in the heat of the day. Run in the early morning or later in the evening when the sun is low. • Wear light colored clothing.

• • • •

• •

Stay well-hydrated drinking water. Stretch after every workout to avoid injuries. Visit a local running store to be fitted for properly fitting shoes. Rest days are crucial, resting between each run day will reduce your chance of injury by allowing your joints to recover and your muscles to strengthen and repair making you a better, stronger runner. Set goals for yourself. Setting goals will help you stay motivated; don’t give up until you reach that goal. Use proper running form (Look straight forward naturally; this will help straighten your back

and neck allowing them to be in alignment. Relax your shoulders and as you get tired don’t let them creep up towards your ears. Keep your hands in an unclenched fist and put your elbows at a 90-degree angle and make sure they swing front to back as you run.) How fast should I go? You should run at a pace that you could hold a conversation without gasping for air. If you find yourself huffing and puffing you are going too fast. Congratulations on starting training and welcome to running! Good Luck!!

Author Lee Trimble And Beyond The Call The Father, Hero & Man Behind the Story - Captain Robert Trimble By Christine Craddock

For Lee Trimble, Haymarket author, the moment he almost lost his father at the age of 85 triggered his decision to really get to know this quiet man by bonding with him and learning his true life story. While Lee knew of Captain Robert Trimble’s experiences as a bomber pilot in World War II, one slip of the tongue led to a revelation about his father’s undercover work as a hero who helped almost 1,000 POWs return home from Poland in 1945. As Lee says, Robert’s work as a bomber pilot “was heroism enough; we never knew there was so much more.” Lee was shocked by this revelation and thus began the adventure into learning and researching the whole story, ultimately co-writing his first book entitled Beyond the Call: The True Story of One World War II Pilot's Covert Mission to Rescue POWs on the Eastern Front which was listed as #1 in books about prisoners of war on Amazon.

Robert, his wife Eleanor and baby Carol, after the war 10

Captain Trimble Haymarket Lifestyle

Poltava Commander Trimble The story goes like this. On a visit at the nursing home, Lee asks Robert about a particularly painful time in Robert’s youth when his own father left the family. Robert says “In some ways going off to war helped me escape my unhappiness for awhile; I was so excited. But while I was in Europe something happened to me that changed how I looked at life. I have not talked about this very much. It was so terrible that I returned from Russia very depressed, not caring about my relationship with your mother, the military or even me." Although Lee wanted to ask more, he held back because he saw the pain it was causing his father. But the word “Russia” stuck out to him. Having never heard his father mention that he had been in Russia in the war, he took the chance on getting more information. Robert responded, “It’s one of the things I purposely never mentioned to any of you. In fact I was ordered not to. And frankly I am not sure I want to now. It was painful then and it’s taken a lifetime for me to recover. It was a dark evil time. No one knew that we were in Russia as OSS operatives."

Lee said it was difficult to coax this part of his father’s war experience out of him because Robert wanted to forget the horrors he witnessed, including Auschwitz, and the feeling of being “constantly tailed by Stalin’s secret police.” Lee says his father “still showed the fear and anxiety talking about it 60 years later.” Captain Robert Trimble’s adventure began in 1945. He was a 25-year-old bomber pilot who found himself at Poltava Air Base in the Ukraine, which was provided to the United States as a bomber staging field. Trimble felt deceived when he found out that the orders he had accepted, which was supposed to be flying out aircraft that needed repair, was actually a front for the real mission of working with counterintelligence agents to help American and other liberated POWs return home. The Amazon book description states: “In total secrecy, the Office of Strategic Services chose an obscure American air force detachment stationed at a Ukrainian airfield; it would provide the base and the cover for the operation. The man they picked to undertake it was veteran 8th Air Force bomber pilot Captain Robert Trimble.” While his initial reaction was anger, Robert eventually accepted this mission when he realized how important it was. These former POWs wandering the Polish region were injured and suffering from hunger, sickness, and hypothermia. Acting courageously, Robert Trimble set out on foot alone while carrying a large amount of money to help secure travel for the POWs he came across. His brave and courageous acts helped lead to the safety of so many while risking his own life. The book takes you through Captain Robert Trimble’s account of this dangerous mission. It has been reviewed as vivid, engaging, powerful, and riveting. Co-written with Jeremy Dronfield who Lee says has extensive knowledge of World War II, it should be an inspiring read and one that may

be a great adventure to share between fathers and sons. It took Lee 6 years of research to confirm and validate the details of his father’s courageous story. Lee attributes his father’s courage to two sources: one was that Robert had to become the man of his household, working while going to school, at the young age of 14 when his father left the family. But also Robert had a love for adventure. “He was a fearless flyer,” says Lee, and the commander of his base in England called him "hot doggie.” Robert’s enthusiasm for going to war was evident in his pursuits and was what led him to his ultimate heroic acts of saving people while putting himself in harm’s way. The story of Lee and Robert may serve as a reminder that there may be a hero who lives inside all of our fathers. For The Love of Plants Thoughts & Inspiration On Gardening For Blooms, Scents & Taste By Lynne Galluzzo

I remember when we planted some of the first trees and bushes in our yard in Haymarket and I wondered what they would look like in ten years. Well, here it is eleven years later and many of them have gotten pretty amazing. This year the best show came from the Fringe Trees, the Crabapples and the Smokebushes (also known as Smoke Tree). Our two Smokebushes are stunning this year. They are ten foot mounds of pink foamy flowers. In the morning when there is just a touch of dew still on them they literally sparkle like diamonds. They both used to be purple but one of them is turning a bit green. Plants are like that – changing for reasons all their own. That’s part of the magic of gardening. My roses, which have been neglected for a few years now (and it showed), finally got some attention this spring. I cut them back at a good time and fed them with Osmacote and Epsom Salts. The Epsom Salts are Magnesium Sulfate which encourages basal breaks, or new stalks. They are starting to bloom and look better than they have in a long time. The garden is in the “Post Spring – Pre-Summer” period. Penstemons, Roses, and Joe Pye Weed are the features right now. It is a wonderful thing when a plant does more than one thing – serves more than one purpose. Not that I don’t treasure all of my trees, shrubs and flowers that simply look wonderful or smell good, but there a few that do even more than that like Chives. We have a row of Chive plants just outside the vegetable garden fence. We started with one; 12

over time that one has created its own row which is fine. The long, green, tubular leaves are decorative, deer and rabbit resistant and taste great chopped up in everything from salads to eggs to cream cheese and butter spreads. The round, puffy violet flowers are pretty and long lasting. I cut a handful of them this spring, put them in a dark purple glass vase and they lit up the corner behind my sink for weeks. They only got replaced because they were losing color, not because they were dropping petals and being messy. Do you have a cat? Have you ever witnessed a cat with fresh Catnip? Every cat reacts to Catnip differently but every single one of them is a show. They completely lose any sense of self and become very primal. There is another garden plant with a similar name and from the Nepeta family – Catmint. Some cats like it, some are mildly interested, but they do not LOVE it like they do Catnip. So while Catmint is a great and very useful garden plant, for true cat pleasure make

sure that you get Catnip. My dear, departed cat Max would accompany me while I gardened. I had to have at least three Catnip plants so that two could recover while he ate, rolled on, slept in and generally massacred the third. For indoor cats a fresh stalk of Catnip is far more fun than packaged treats. At the end of the season we cut stalks and dry them in a paper bag for freshening toys all year. Catnip is highly deer resistant, has pretty purple flowers and soft green leaves which makes it a useful garden plant also. “This garden smells like pickles!” One or both of the lovely little twin girls that visit me in the garden said that and they were right. It smells like pickles because the single Dill that I planted about four years ago continues to seed itself; consistently returning year after year. It would be easy to pull it all out and be done with it but I enjoy its tenacity, I like the scent protection it gives my Roses and I love having it available fresh for Cucumber salad. It is tall and feathery and easy to remove from places where it isn’t welcome like

between path stones. Just as decorative as regular flowering plants is my Sage plant that has soft green and purple leaves and stalks of purple flowers. It has the added bonus of drying well for use as a seasoning. Purple Basil is a must in my flower garden. I love how the dark purple leaves contrast with all of the green and the leaves are fabulous shredded in salads and on top of a hot fresh pizza. Last week as I walked up from the vegetable garden with a bounty of spring salad greens I stopped by my Coral Drift Rose and cut a few blossoms. The petals from two of them made the salad look extra special and the others stayed fresh in the bag with the greens. Chives, Catnip, Dill and Sage are not the showiest plants in a garden so they work a little harder by being decorative, deer resistant, flavorful and easy to grow. That is why I keep them and that is why I love them.

LIFE &

Living It

Happy Independence Day! Although our little town does not have a 4th of July celebration, families won’t have to travel far to see some great fireworks displays. Here are a few around us to visit on the 4th.

Celebrate America

9431 West Street in Manassas Party starts at 3pm, fireworks at 9:15pm Known to be one of the largest fireworks displays in Northern Virginia, historic downtown Manassas celebrates the holiday with an all-American party in the streets. There will be rides for children, food vendors, and a watermelon eating contest. The lawn for the fireworks display fills up quickly so be sure to get your seats early and bring a blanket and chairs. Families can also venture out to Leesburg, Middleburg, Culpeper, and Fairfax and many others to experience more small town Independence Day celebrations. For a full listing of events, go to virginia.org/july4thfestivals. Adults and families choosing to stay home and grill out with family and friends, please remember to be safe with fireworks. Here are some tips from the Fire Marshal’s Office, a division of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue.

July 4th Celebration at Great Meadow

5089 Old Tavern Road in The Plains Gates open at 4pm A huge celebration awaits families visiting The Plains for the 4th. With a general admission purchase, families can enjoy numerous children’s activities, a helicopter air show, polo exhibitions, parades, rocketry demonstrations, and so much more. The fireworks display is also one of the largest in our area with a grande finale like no other. Go to greatmeadow.org to learn how to purchase tickets.

Fireworks Safety Tips Fireworks should only be used under adult supervision. Fireworks should only be used outdoors on a driveway, sidewalk or other fire-resistant surface. REMEMBER: Fires are caused by careless handling of fireworks in areas exposed to sparks or live fireworks. NEVER ignite fireworks during high winds where flying sparks can start a fire. Keep a bucket of water handy in case sparks start a fire. Be sure children around fireworks know to stop, drop and roll if there

clothing catches on fire. Deposit sparklers in a metal container as they may be stepped on while hot or lost in the grass and stepped on while playing. • NEVER aim or throw fireworks at another person. • NEVER try to re-ignite fireworks that malfunction or fail to go off. • DO NOT wear loose clothing when using fireworks. • NEVER experiment or make your own fireworks. • NEVER carry fireworks in your pocket.

“UNDER 21”

ACTIVITIES

THIS SUMMER

FUN & PERSONAL FULFILLMENT OPTIONS FOR YOUNG ADULTS By Emma Korynta

Now that summer is in full swing for many high school and college students, endless amounts of 20-and-unders are blindly staring at their laptops as they wait for their next Netflix episode to start. But fear not! While the Haymarket area may have a plethora of wineries, bars and the like to hang out in, there are still plenty of options sans alcohol!

1

TAPPING INTO YOUR WILD(ERNESS) SIDE Outdoorsy types look no further. Virginia is known for it’s beautiful sites and trails. From the Bull Run loops to the Manassas National Battlefield, you can’t go wrong trying to get in touch with the great outdoors!

2

PUBLIC POOLS If you don’t live in a neighborhood with a pool but you’re still craving a little sun and a dip in the water, try a public pool. Whether you choose the Bull Run Swim & Racquet Club, Atlantis Water Park, or the Central Park Aquatic Center, you can’t go wrong. Instead of wasting away the day inside, take a nice book and dip your feet in the shallow end or (if you’re feeling adventurous) take the plunge into the deep water.

CATCH A MOVIE 3 It may seem obvious, but meet up with a few friends at Regal Gainesville and go catch the latest hit. Summer is the season of the box office, so you won’t be able to take a trip to your

18

local theater without having a tough decision of which flick to pick. GET INVOLVED WITH 4 INTRAMURAL SPORTS Are you finding yourself having

withdrawals after the end of your sports season from the school year? Sign up for an intramural sport. If you can’t find the right team for you, you can even consider coaching for a Little League team. Try searching “intramural sports in Haymarket, VA” for more information.

BECOME A 5 DESIGNATED DRIVER You may not be 21, but others in your circle certainly are. There’s no better way to say you care than by keeping others safe. Check local facebook groups or keep in contact with older friends to see if anyone needs a safe and sober driver.

6

CHILL A LITTLEWITH SOME ICE CREAM With endless options in the area you can absolutely find sweet spots to satisfy your sugar cravings. Do yourself one better and combine this option with anything else on the list- everything else is sweeter with a little ice cream. Don’t forget, July is National Ice Cream Month!

TRY OUT THE JOB MARKET 9 Of course, to enjoy some retail therapy you have to have some spare

change. The Haymarket-Gainesville area has a plethora of places where you can find employment. You can increase your earnings and experience to tout on your resume. Check out www. monster.com for more information.

beyond clay by rebekah grier

Creating beauty out of the “unlovely” is Lori Langford’s specialty. Both physically and emotionally, she takes the ugly and unimpressive and turns it into something exquisite and useful. In 2007, Lori’s mother passed away suddenly, leaving Lori to struggle through an intense season of grieving. Lori’s husband, knowing how much she loved to collect pottery, began to suggest she learn how to create pottery as something to fill her time. After consistent denials to try, Lori finally bought her first bag of clay. She recreated a tray with the imprint of leaf. “And I haven’t stopped,” said Langford. Lori is a potter. She transforms uninspiring blocks of clay into some of the most lovely and meaningful pottery pieces in Virginia using only her hands and her kiln. Owner of Big Dog Pots Pottery in Marshall, VA, Lori’s handmade pottery pieces have new homes in countries all over the world, including Australia, Canada, and Mexico. She’s created dog bowls for AKC champions, Civil War replicas, and continues to expand her talents and offerings. Despite a career that most people would consider artistic, Lori does not consider herself an artist. “I am not artistic. I am not an artist. The joke in my family is when I say, ‘here, let 26

me draw you a picture of what I’m talking about.’” A scientist at heart, a geologist by education, and an urban planner by trade, Lori has chosen an art form that still allows her to use her scientist’s curiosity in melting, mixing, and molding elements. “I’m all about melting things.” Working in pottery now for the past six years, Lori adores being a potter and will even get jittery and uncomfortable if she’s away from it for more than two or three days. She usually spends between 40 to 60 hours a week in clay and is quite prolific. Her Etsy shop alone has had over 600 orders since 2009 and is what generates most of her international sales. It was in 2009 that Lori left her 20-year career in urban planning to pursue her then-hobby. “This all came very late in my life. To find out that I’m actually able to do this is a huge ‘who knew’, because I never knew,” Lori said. While Lori can, and does, make everything from small ornaments to cups to plates, she is by far most well known for her dog bowls – it’s even how she got the name, Big Dog Pots. When her hobby started growing and she could no longer keep all the pieces she created, Lori began attending fine art shows as a way to find new homes for her items. An avid dog-lover,

most of the pieces she made were dog “pots.” She quickly became known as the “dog pot lady.” Some time later, a customer in Canada contacted Lori. She wanted a custom dog bowl made for her Spaniel, Coco, that could keep Coco’s long ears out of the water and food in her bowls. Working together on a design, Lori and the customer measured Coco’s snout and created a bowl that was just big enough to fit Coco’s snout, allowing her ears to drape over the sides. The Spaniel bowl was born. “They have taken on a life of their own…[They’ve] really hit a chord with people,” Lori said. While this now-insanely popular design is named after the Spaniel, it works well for any long-eared dog and Lori has custom fit it to snouts of many varying sizes. Lori

has even made custom Spaniel bowls for the Master of the Hunt in Louisville, Kentucky and AKC Spaniel champions. Describing how customers from all over the world have sent her photos of their dogs enjoying her bowls, Lori said, “It’s a thrill. It’s such a thrill to see animals using my bowls in far corners of the world. [We’re] making the world happier, one set of ears at a time.” Another unique and popular item in Lori’s repertoire is her Civil War replica mugs. Lori described how during the Civil War, metal cups had to be melted down for weaponry. As a result, potters on both sides of the war started making clay mugs for the soldiers to use that were large enough for beverages as well as eating stew. Lori has found that her mugs are just as popular with the locals as with tourists who want something made from the area that is also reflective of the history. “It’s been very interesting to see what my pieces have gone off in their own sort of way,” Lori said of her eclectic catalog of pieces and her surprise at which ones have become popular. Besides her most popular

28

and requested items, Lori creates a large amount of custom work. “We’ve had a lot of interesting requests that have come in through the door. And we’re always open to what people are interested in and if it’s in our skill set we’ll give it a go.” Lori gives a lot of credit to the community for her current and future success. “We’ve been very well received. The community is very welcoming and excited.” When Lori first opened Big Dog Pots Pottery, she only sold pottery. Now, because of interest from the community, she offers classes, paint and glaze, studio time for other local potters, and most recently, fused glass. “We’re not a one-shot place,” Lori said. A generous community participant, Lori donates “whatever we can find in our budget and still pay the mortgage” to local non-profits such as the Middleburg Humane Society and Fauquier SPCA as well as other organizations and families in need. She also donates “comfort crosses,” small clay crosses made to fit in the palm of your hand, to help bring comfort to

those who are suffering a loss. Because loss is something Lori understands. By courageously embracing and gently molding the unexpected season of grief from her mother’s passing, Lori has created an exquisite legacy of love and service that goes beyond mere blocks of clay.

HEY

Dad??

M

y son knows me well. After every milestone that he and my daughter reach, I usually offer a lessons learned speech. It drives them, and The Boss (my wife) nuts. So, to keep true to my pattern, I will offer the following lessons learned to my kids, but also to all the graduates of Battlefield High School’s Class of 2015. As a bit of background, on 10 June 2015, at approximately 5:10 pm, in the spacious Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater, in front of more than 5,000 students, faculty, and guests, Principal Amy Ethridge-Conti of Battlefield High School announced the final words that forever changed the lives of the students of the Class of 2015, “By the power vested in me by the Commonwealth of Virginia, I now pronounce you graduates!” At those words, the graduating students jumped to their feet, tossed their hats high in the air, and gave a resounding, final group yell. Then, faculty, students, parents, and other guests mingled to hug, shake hands, and congratulate one another. Here is what I say to all you Battlefield graduates, including my son. I offer my congratulations on your incredible achievement…and I want to remind you of one important fact, you didn’t achieve it by yourself. You had a superb supporting cast that helped you reach your milestone, so as your graduation slowly sinks into reality this summer, may I suggest that you take the time to thank your supporting cast. Let’s review who they might be.

The leadership team of the Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS). Send your “Thank you” email or letter to Dr. Steven L. Walts, the Superintendent of the PWCS, thanking him, his staff, and the members of the School Board for building one of our nation’s best public school systems. In doing so, they afforded you many unique learning opportunities and opened many doors for your future success. The administration, faculty, and staff of the elementary and middle schools you attended. Most of you were born and raised in the Haymarket-Gainesville area, so you likely attended one of the areas elementary and middle schools such as J.W. Alvey,

By Bob Crisman Tyler, Bull Run, or Gaineville. It was in these early years of your schooling in which the foundation of your future was set. Send an e-mail or a letter to the principals of your former elementary and middle schools to say “Thank you” for their dedication to you. The administration, faculty, and staff of Battlefield High School At Battlefield, Principal EthridgeConti and her faculty provided you so many wonderful and unique opportunities to learn, to mature, and to be successful; all the while, enjoying an exceptionally safe, nurturing, and caring environment. The Battlefield High staff took great care in providing you with a healthy and clean school and grounds, topnotch athletics and student activities programs, and open lines of communication between and among you, your parents, and Principal Ethridge-Conti’s administration and faculty. Send an e-mail or a letter to Principal EthridgeConti to say “Thank you” for her dedication to you. And, send an e-mail or a letter to those faculty and staff members at Battlefield High who made a difference in your life. Your community Raising you was not an easy task. The demands on parents and children in this area are incredible, and meeting all those demands is impossible without the help of neighbors and your parent’s friends. You know who I mean, the neighborhood mom who always drove you to school when you missed the bus or the parent who met you at the bus stop in the afternoon, and then drove you to your sporting practice, or the dad who always picked you for his GBA basketball team so you could be a teammate with his kid. Send an e-mail or a letter to those adults who helped your parents raise you, and say “Thank you.” Your friends Someone once said that to find one true friend is a gift. During your journey starting in Kindergarten and culminating in your senior year at Battlefield, you met a whole lot of

students, all of whom were experiencing the many trials and tribulations of growing up. With them, you created ever-lasting memories. With you, they shared deep secrets, created inner feelings, laughed and cried with you, got upset at you, and supported you. Send an e-mail or a letter to your friends who were there for you, who stood by you, and say “Thank you.” Your family Your parents, step-parents, guardians, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and siblings are your support network. It was your mother who, after she put you on the school bus for the first time or dropped you off at school for your first day of classes, stood there bravely as you waved goodbye, only to go home and let out a good cry. It was your father who stood stoically in the emergency room waiting area while doctors set your broken arm or stitched up a nasty laceration, only to break down into tears later that night in the dark recesses of the master bedroom. You may not have always felt the loving support of your family, but it was there every day, demonstrated in many ways. In fact, it was there before you were even born, when your parents started planning for your arrival into this world. Your family, especially those who raised you on a daily basis, made great sacrifices in their lives on your behalf. Give your parents, your stepparents, your guardians, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles, your cousins, and your siblings a warm, caring “Thank you” in an e-mail, or in a letter, or by a hug that shows you understand how much they helped you reach the milestone of graduating from Battlefield High School. Let me wrap up by asking what lessons you might learn in reflecting upon your graduation from Battlefield? Well, one thing, life is complicated and difficult, so you need a strong supporting cast to help you realize your dreams. And two, don’t forget to say “Thank you” to those who help you along your journey through life.

Joseph Miller built the Center for the Photographic Arts in 2002 on his property near Catharpin. It is used for seminars, workshops, classes and photo exhibits. Mr. Miller was also was instrumental in the creation of the Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs in 1997.

Abstract Culture Lives In Catharpin One man’s passion for art provides an education for others by John T. Toler Situated at the end of a long driveway off Catharpin Road, the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts (JMCPA) has provided training and a creative outlet for photographers of all skill levels since 2002. Built by long-time Catharpin resident Joseph Miller on the site of a burned furniture restoration workshop, the goal of the center is to promote photography as an art form, through abstract visual design. The JMCPA is also the headquarters of The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC), “…an informal entity created in 1997 by Joseph Miller, with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk,” according to the NVACC Web site. The purpose of the organization is to foster cooperation and communication between the camera clubs in the region. Among the ways the NVACC has served members is the publication of its Directory of speakers, which is periodically updated; offering training for camera club photography judges; and creation of the Field Trips Guide for Photographers, which includes information about nearby sites that camera club members might want to visit. The NVACC has produced 25 booklets covering a variety of 32

subjects related to photography, which may be downloaded and printed, or displayed electronically. According to the JMCPA mission statement, classes and workshops held at the center “…are designed to inspire photographers to be creative, and to produce images which evoke mood, feeling and emotion.” Mr. Miller has a more simple expression: “…to reveal the poetry of photography.” This is done by shifting a photographer’s focus from the more familiar subject-based photography (for example: nature, landscapes, animals, etc.) to abstract, design-based works, using textures, weaves, patterns and other non-subjects. Both color and black-and-white photographs are used. Workshops are generally held monthly at the JMCPA, and are limited to 30 participants. In order to ensure that there are enough seats and an adequate number of handout materials prepared, pre-registration is required. Schedules and information about events are announced through the member clubs. Workshop assignments involve producing and presenting a predetermined number of original images, which are then subject to critique and analysis. Through this process, the photographer not only learns about the subject matter itself, but the ways in Haymarket Lifestyle

Ghostly, an abstract photo in blackand-white by Nicholas Williams of the Silver Spring Camera Club, won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the recent exhibition. which imagination and creativity can be applied – often resulting in unique artwork. As also noted in the mission statement, “Technical craftsmanship is not enough. To be considered art, a photograph must be felt, as well as seen.” On permanent display in the exhibition gallery is a collection of images from internationally known photographer Freeman Patterson. The ‘MOMA South’ Mr. Miller found kindred spirits in his two long-time associates, Amie Tannenbaum and Matt Schmidt. A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Tannenbaum retired as a professor of French language and literature after a 30-year career teaching at Gettysburg College. She is also an awardwining photographer, and resides in the cottage on the property. Mr. Schmidt, who lives in Reston, is an expert in computer design, and a soughtafter speaker at camera club workshops and similar events. He has also produced a number of award-winning photographs; Mr. Miller considers him a genius. Each May for the past five years, Mr. Miller, Dr. Tannenbaum and Mr. Schmidt have organized and executed an Abstract Photography Exhibit at the center, drawing a growing number of participants, principally from regional camera clubs and others who embrace the genre. This year, 115 photographers from camera clubs in Virginia and Maryland and one photographer from New York submitted 466 images. Of this number, 120 were selected to be displayed and judged in the JMCPA gallery. July 2015

Nicholas Williams, a member of the Silver Spring (Md.) Camera Club, earned the Fifth Annual Exhibition’s Peoples’ Choice Award for “Ghostly,” an abstract black-and-white photo. Eighteen other photographers received Special Mention. Mr. Miller notes that abstract photos rarely win in general camera club competitions, largely because few judges understand – or even like – abstracts. But through the work of the center, the popularity of abstract photography is

growing; indeed, those who have learned at the center refer to it as the “MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) South.” A member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, Mr. Miller is frequently invited to speak at camera club gatherings, explaining the processes involved in visual design, creative thinking, and the technical aspects of abstract photography. Other topics include what’s good – and what’s not – about competitions, and how

Matthew G. Schmidt’s Fibonacci in Blue to fairly and accurately judge photographs, including abstracts. He has also traveled to Israel and South Africa, where he has shared his experience with other photographers. Securing a legacy While Joseph Miller’s interest in photography has evolved into the abstract, his ties to Catharpin and the land where his home and the center were built are based in both history and reality. A native Virginian, Mr. Miller, 83, traces his lineage back to Edward Digges (1621-1675), who came to Virginia from England in 1650 and settled in York County. He was the governor of Virginia from 1855-56, and served on the Governor’s council from 1670-1675. Mr. Miller first became seriously interested in photography while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Europe, he took photos of the city scenes and countryside, which he sent to his parents, Joseph Franklin Miller (1906-1978) and Annie Laurie Digges Miller (1909-2002), “…because I knew they would never get over there to see them,” he recalled. The family connection with Prince William County began in the early 1950s, when his aunt and uncle, Frederick and Mary Frances Digges Miller, purchased the historic Oakwood estate, at the intersection of Catharpin and Sudley roads, which they renamed “Dun Roman” (See

Haymarket Lifestyle, October 2013). Mr. Miller returned to the area in the 1960s, working for Eastman Kodak, and later the State Department and Department of Commerce, specializing in international trade. Following the death of his uncle Frederick in 1969, his aunt Mary Frances gave parts of her property to her close relatives, including a parcel she gave Mr. Miller. Soon afterward, he built a new home on the property. The unique house was built of native stone taken from nearby hillsides, and the complex stonework done by his multi-talented uncles, the late Roscoe and Henry Digges. Wishing to share what he had learned about photography and design over the years, Mr. Miller began offering workshops to small groups during weekends. After he retired, he restored furniture in a large old building behind his house. In 2002, the furniture workshop was struck by lightning, and completely gutted. Work started immediately on a new building, which would become the Joseph Miller Center. “By then I was 70 years old, I realized it would be a lot easier to move photographs around the building than heavy furniture,” noted Mr. Miller. Ten years ago, Mr. Miller put his entire property in a permanent conservation easement through the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. Although growth is happening all along Catharpin Road, the property of Joseph Miller will never be

subdivided or paved-over. The oldest structure on Mr. Miller’s property is the remodeled cottage fronting on Catharpin Road, which was originally a slave quarters on the Oakwood estate. Based on his discovery that the old floor joists were cut with a pit saw, rather than a circular saw (in common use only after 1832), he figures that the oldest section was built before 1850. From 1901 until 1972, it was the home of Charles O. Berry (1880-1975) and his wife, Laura E. Hurley Berry (1882-1972). In one of the many conversations he had with Mr. Berry, Mr. Miller learned that Mr. Berry’s father had been born a slave in the cabin, giving further testimony to the age of the structure. The cabin was expanded over the years, and was the home of Mr. Berry and his wife their entire married life – 71 years – and where they raised their family. In recognition of their long ties to the property, when Frederick and Mary Miller acquired Oakwood, they gave Mr. and Mrs. Berry life tenancy in the cottage, and their relationship remained close over the years. Their son Ed Berry helped Roscoe and Henry Digges build Mr. Miller’s home, and later the JMCPA building. Both the establishment of the JMCPA and the preservation of the bucolic setting that it occupies represent Mr. Miller’s ultimate goal: to accomplish something special that “…will stand the test of time.” “I have had a love affair with design photography, and I’m happy that I’ve been able to share this passion and create the photographic arts center,” he said. “I have been lucky in life, and want to leave something for future generations.” With that in mind, Mr. Miller has plans for his ultimate succession, but in the meantime, “I just can’t rest,” he said. He and his associates are currently working on the schedule for a series of one-day seminars to be held at the center. Future classes include Camera Club Competitions 101 on Saturday, Sept. 12, Abstract Photography on Saturday, Nov. 21, and Judging Camera Club Photographs on Saturday, Dec. 12. All of these discussions are for one session, running from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs and the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts, visit www.nvacc.org. Also found on the Web site are images of some of the photographs that competed in the Fifth Annual Exhibition.

GERMS, GERMS

EVERYWHERE There’s no escaping germs, but you can keep them from spreading By Ashton Wagner

Germs are literally everywhere. From your keyboard to your cellphone and from the bathroom to the kitchen, germs can exist on every surface. Dr. Steven Tang of Novant Health Bristow Run Family Medicine in Gainesville, Virginia, said it’s important to be aware of places where germs thrive and to take action to protect yourself and your family. “Sometimes we make presumptions about where we get germs,” Tang said. “We assume germs are spread from close family members, but the majority of the time they are spread through public places. Germs can live on surfaces for a couple of hours. Think about touching a shopping cart after the person who used it last sneezed on it. You should take advantage of the disinfectant wipes most grocery stores offer.” Disinfectant wipes come in handy to kill bacteria and clean grimy surfaces. Use them on the TV remote control, light switches in your house and your office desk.

Another place germs can thrive is in the refrigerator, especially in leftover food. “Depending on what the leftover food is, there is a limit on how long you should keep it,” Tang said. “We need to be diligent when it comes to food safety.” Foodsafety.gov recommends discarding leftovers after three or four days to prevent them from spoiling or becoming dangerous to eat. SUMMER TIPS With summer drawing near, many people are traveling and spending time near the water. Tang said that a lot of people pick up germs on airplanes. “Since planes are enclosed and there are so many people on board, it’s easy for germs to spread,” he said. Tang suggested wearing a mask when traveling to areas where you haven’t been exposed to those germs. “We have this social taboo of wearing a mask, but in reality, a mask can prevent a lot of germs from being spread from one person to the next,”

he said. “In other countries, especially countries in Asia, people are more accustomed to wearing a mask to prevent the spread of germs.” Swimming pools also have the potential for the spread of germs, despite the use of chlorine. “It’s hard to kill some specific viruses,” Tang said. “Common warts can be transferred fairly easily, as well as athlete’s foot, which can be picked up in common locker room areas.” WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF What’s your number one protection against germs? Hand-washing. Using soap and water is the best way to keep your hands clean. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds, or the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. If you aren’t near a sink, hand sanitizer is a great alternative, Tang said.

WHERE THEY’RE HIDING A recent study by CBS Pittsburgh found the single-serve coffee maker their employees use contained 4.6 million colonies of bacteria and mold. Another CBS station in Dallas found bacteria such as E. coli and staphylococcus in their single-serve coffee maker. “Damp areas promote the growth of germs,” Tang said. Many single-serve coffee makers have water reservoirs where internal standing water can stay for days.

Green Maple Market Offers Wide Selection Of Organic and Healthy Food Options By Christine Craddock

While Haymarket may not be currently found on a list of healthiest places in the DC area, it may not be far from the future. The availability of restaurants and markets offering healthier options for food, including organic, non-gmo, and chemical free produce and meats seems to be growing rapidly. Adding to the list is Katherine Fuerst Holster who officially opened Green Maple Market for business on May 15th in Vint Hill. “We believe that what is good for the earth is good for our bodies too” is the mantra Holster uses to run her market. With the goal of making “farm fresh, healthy, wholesome, local foods easily accessible to our community and surrounding area,” Holster accomplishes this by purchasing from local farmers who raise animals in a way that is all natural, free-range

38

and pasture raised without added hormones or antibiotics. Holster believes deeply that “we all have a responsibility to be good stewards of the land we’ve inherited and to protect it for future generations.” Also, by purchasing from our local farmers, we are supporting those who use “earthfriendly, sustainable farming practices” to protect land that is used for food production. Holster eventually hopes that by supporting farmers, more and more young people will turn to this profession and serve to bring it back into popularity for future generations. But Green Maple Market is not Holster’s first venture in owning a farm market. During her tenure at Virginia Tech, she offered fresh organic produce at a small farmer’s market underneath a maple tree. The Maple Tree Market,

Katherine Fuerst Holster, Owner

as it was named, served to give her a first experience in providing a service she felt passionate about to the community. Years later, Holster opened Countryside Farm Market in Amissville when her children were little but went back to the workforce for the security of a full-time job. However, her passion and desire to own a fresh market did not fade as the years went by. When she learned that her grandfather, who died a month before she was born, had opened a grocery shop in 1937 when he came to America named “Green Tree Market,” she was touched by this shared interest. Green Maple Market was so named in honor of her grandfather’s and her own dreams coming to pass. “I didn’t choose Vint Hill; Vint Hill chose me,” says Holster about the decision to locate the market

in an area that is thriving as a new destination spot for both locals and travelers. Ed Moore, Vint Hill President and Julie Broaddus, who owns Old Bust Head Brewing Company with her husband, had already envisioned the building where the market now stands serving this purpose so the conversations flowed immediately. The market contributes to Vint Hill’s ‘buy fresh, buy local’ theme and is located in an area where Holster says “consumers are starved for healthier food choices.” Holster envisions an expansion

of the market for the future but for now, her focus is on “bringing the best products to market” that she is able to find for her customers. NEW SOLAR ENERGY PROJECT APPROVED FOR LANDFILL On May 19, 2015, the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors unanimously approved the recommendation of the Public Works Department Solid Waste Division to authorize an operating lease and license to use the Prince William County Sanitary Landfill for the development of a solar energy generation project. Placing solar panels on the open space of closed and capped areas of landfills have become an accepted and viable option for landfills throughout the United States. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies concluded that installation of solar panels on closed landfills is a Best Management Practice. The project is also consistent with the Virginia initiative for producing renewable energy by state and local governments through publicprivate partnerships, and the EPA Clean Power Plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel power plants. Installing this solar energy project, through a public-private partnership, also meets one of the County’s Landfill Eco-Park component goals-- utilizing closed areas of the landfill for a beneficial use to produce renewable energy. After a public procurement process CGC, Inc. (CGC), of Wakefield, MA was selected for the project.

42

CGC will design, build, own, operate, and maintain a solar energy project on landfill property to provide power directly to County facilities located on the landfill property. CGC will lease the solar project to the County for 25 years and produce solar energy to offset the amount of power purchased from NOVEC. The total Phase 1 project size is approximately 1.5 MW. Based upon estimates, the County will save approximately $13,000 per year by producing and utilizing this on-site renewable power. Utilizing the power from this 1.5 MW solar project is also estimated to reduce carbon emissions and the County’s carbon footprint by 1400 tons/year. This is equivalent to taking 300 cars off the road each year. Future expansion of the solar panels is also possible as additional landfill areas are closed and capped. The solar panels are scheduled to be installed on southern exposure slopes of the Prince William County Landfill and operational in early 2016.

The Prince William County Solid Waste Division provides solid waste management, recycling, composting and waste resource education to over 400,000 residents. The division employs more than 50 people and operates the only active Extraordinary Environmental Excellence (E4) rated landfill in Virginia, the highest level of certification awarded by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP). In 2013, the SWD also earned the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Gold Medal Award for its Sustainability Program. The Solid Waste Division is a part of the Prince William County Public Works Department, an accredited agency of the American Public Works Association. For more information on this project contact Thomas Bruun, Director, 5 County Complex Court, Suite 250, Prince William. (703) 792-6254 Fax: (703) 792-4617

Avoiding Co$tly Housing Mistakes in the Midst of a Divorce Divorce is a tough situation which opens up many emotional and financial issues to be solved. One of the most important decisions is what to do about the house. By Susan Jacobs You have 4 basic housing options when in the midst of a divorce: 1 Sell the House Now and Divide Up the Proceeds –As you work to get your financial affairs in order, make sure you understand what your net proceeds after a sale will be - i.e. after all selling expenses and needed repairs. Then you can determine what your split of the proceeds will be. The split may not be 50/50, but rather may depend on the divorce settlement, the source of the original down payment and property laws in your area.

4 Retain Joint Ownership – If there is not enough equity you might consider retaining joint ownership for a period of time. While this temporary situation means you have no immediate worries in selling you will want to keep your eye on tax considerations which may change from the time of your divorce to the time of the sale.

If you and your spouse decide to sell your home, it’s important to work together through a professional to maximize your return. You will need to put differences aside. You both will need to sign a listing agreement, the contract and the all the closing documents.

2 Buy Out Your Spouse – This may require you meeting with a lender to determine how much you can afford based on your income and current debt. You will want to take into consideration the selling expense to arrive at a buyout amount. 3 ❸Have Your Spouse Buy You Out – If you are the one who is leaving, you have the opportunity to start again in new surroundings with cash in your pocket. However, be aware that if the old home loan is not refinanced you will be liable for the mortgage. Just because your spouse did a quit claim deed does not release your financial obligation. This liability may make qualifying for a new mortgage difficult for you if you decide to purchase a home. A mentor once told me that “giving back is not something you do when you become successful , it’s something to do to become successful.” Over the years, we’ve supported many groups and organizations with our time and with our dollars. Some of the organizations in the Haymarket-Gainesville community include The Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center, The Gainesville Haymarket Rotary Club & The Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your business. I’m not sure if I can pinpoint a specific moment - nonetheless, looking back it’s satisfying to know we have made it this far. It’s rewarding to see some of our team grow with us personally and professionally. While the payment and delivery of healthcare is in the midst of a paradigm shift - we’re excited about the potential the future offers. Have you had an experience with your business that you wish you could redo differently? Nothing comes to mind What are the top 3 business tips & tricks can you offer other business owners & professionals? 1. Focus on what you do & do it well. 2. ‘Giving Back’ is what you do to become successful, not when you’re successful. 3. Surround yourself with GREAT people - trust & empower them.

Naked Mountain Winery Offering Pleasing Wines & Tranquil Setting - By Steve Oviatt Naked Mountain is one of the Commonwealth’s oldest wineries but has a surprisingly youthful face, energy and approach to winemaking. Started in the mid-70’s by Bob and Phoebe Harper, Naked Mountain Winery gained a well-deserved reputation for excellence and as a tranquil oasis for a pleasant afternoon. In 2005, the Harpers retired and began looking for someone to take over. Five years later, Randy and Meagan Morgan, then from Gainesville, learned of the winery’s availability during a tasting and purchased it. Still in their 20’s and knowing little about making wine, the Morgans made it through their first year before hiring the also young, but experienced Seth Chambers as winemaker for the 2011 season. His success with that otherwise difficult vintage sealed his position at Naked Mountain. One white wine of note is the

Petit Manseng, with its tropical notes and soft, creamy texture, making this a great salad and light dish wine. The other is the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, which is surprisingly soft and fruity and pairs well with various shellfish and vegetable dishes. Red wine lovers will be pleasantly surprised by the Cabernet Franc, which is complex, with big, fruity overtones and pairs well with Lamb and other big dishes. The well-known Aerie Red blend is a big, hearty wine that lingers on the finish, also making it the perfect wine with big dishes. Cigar, chocolate and cheese lovers will be pleased by the Soar II Port style wine, which comes in a larger bottle than expected and is the perfect end to a fine evening. Picnics, kids and dogs are welcome, if supervised. And while you are encouraged to “Drink Naked”, please do it in the privacy of your home. Randy, Meagan, and Morgan - Owners

Steve Oviatt is President of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association and runs his own consulting business in addition to working for a number of local wineries. Steve Acknowledges that his daughter has taught him everything he knows about wine. He lives in Catharpin with his wife, Nancy.
