Freemasonry Thrives Hay Market Lodge No. 313 Marks 100 Years

On June 18, members of the Hay Market Lodge No. 313, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (A.F. & A.M.) will observe their 100th anniversary. The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature an open house at the lodge at 6713 Jefferson Street, barbecue dinner, live entertainment and special award presentations. Most Worshipful John M. Chambliss, Grand Master of Virginia, will join in the celebration. Prince William County and the Town of Haymarket officially recognized the anniversary on Feb. 16, the actual date of its charter, but members of the lodge wanted to wait until warm weather for the celebration. Master of Hay Market Lodge No. 313 is Geoff Swanberg, of Lake Ridge. Other officers are Senior Warden Jerry Hampton, Junior Warden David Perry, Secretary Jim Kraut, Treasurer Wayne Grindle Sr., Senior Deacon Kevin Feltmann, and Junior Deacon Doug Collins. A Rich History in Haymarket In many ways, Freemasonry in Haymarket has closely mirrored the history of the town; it has had its ups-and-downs, periods of prosperity and decline, and has felt the same effects from outside influences. The Town of Hay Market was chartered in 1799, and while there had been Masons in Prince William County as early as 1769, it wasn’t until the town was selected as the site of the District Court in 1802 that Freemasonry was established there.

Geoff Swanberg, Master of Hay Market Lodge No. 313 (standing), talks with Lodge Secretary Jim Kraut in front of the lodge on Jefferson Street. 6

“With the Court also came the Masons, and finding it too far to return to Dumfries Lodge No. 50 for meetings, decided to petition the Grand Lodge for the establishment of Lodge at Hay Haymarket Lifestyle

Market,” according to “The History of Hay Market lodge No. 67,” written by Past Master Edmund B. Roland in 1998. “On Dec. 15, 1802, the Grand Lodge issued a charter in the name of Hay Market Lodge No. 67, appointing James Wiggington, a former member of Dumfries Lodge No. 50, as Master; John W. Wiggington, Senior Warden; and William Shaw, Junior Warden. Hay Market Lodge No. 67 met in the jury room of the District Courthouse building (now St. Paul’s Anglican Church), “… this being the most convenient place, and most of its members were in some way connected with the Court,” according to Mr. Roland. “It is assumed that the lodge prospered as long as the Court remained in Hay Market.”

of the burning of Haymarket in November 1862, the charter was found by a Confederate officer – presumably a Mason – who recognized its significance and saved it. He was later killed at the Battle of Bristoe Station in October 1863, “…and the blood-stained charter of this lodge taken from his body by a doctor of the Federal forces,” according to Charles J. Gillis in “Haymarket’s First Masonic Lodge,” written in 1945. Brother Surgeon McDermott, a Mason, was the doctor who recovered the charter. Years later, the charter was returned to the Grand Lodge in Richmond, where it was “…framed and hung in the Trophy Room,” for many years, according to Mr. Gillis. Sadly, the 1802 charter was misplaced when the Trophy Room was remodeled, and this time lost forever. Freemasonry Returns to Haymarket After a long absence, a new Masonic lodge was established in Haymarket. A petition supporting the new lodge signed by ten high-ranking Masons representing seven area lodges was sent to the Grand

Lodge of Virginia in support of the new lodge. The petition was approved, and on Feb. 16, 1911, the Grand Lodge issued a charter to Drinkard Lodge No. 313, and assigned the lodge to Masonic District 1. The lodge was named in honor of Past Master William F. Drinkard. Having met previously in Rector’s Wheelwright shop in Haymarket, the Masons set out to build a lodge of their own. On June 23, 1914, Brothers George G. Tyler, J.E. Beale, W. M Jordan, M.G. White and W.H. Shirley were appointed to a committee to execute the planning, financing and construction of a new lodge building. The maximum amount to be borrowed for the project was set at $1,200. Work began soon afterward, and the lodge on Jefferson Street was completed six months later. The first meeting was held there on Jan. 25, 1915, and final indebtedness – $729.95 – owed to Brown & Hooff, a building materials company in Manassas, was ordered paid on Aug. 23, 1915. The lodge continued through two World Wars, the Great Depression and other events that had direct impact on the citizens of Haymarket. Over the years, many prominent men from the town and

Like the town of Haymarket, Lodge No. 67 face a period of decline after the District Court system was abolished in 1807 and the Court moved to Brentsville. Representation at meetings at the Grand Lodge was inconsistent between 1808 and 1812, and Mr. Roland states that between 1801 and 1812, the meeting place was moved from the courthouse to the Hay Market Inn. By 1816, the lodge was dormant. Various versions exist about what happened to the original 1802 charter of the lodge after it was declared extinct, only to resurface during the Civil War.

area around it were Masons, often rising to Master of the lodge. Their photographs are displayed on two walls on the first floor of the lodge. “On July 10, 1961, after honoring Most Worshipful Brother Drinkard for 51 years, and at time suffering some embarrassment from the name ‘Drinkard,’ the lodge passed a resolution to recommend to the Grand Lodge that its name be changed to the name of the first lodge in Haymarket, i.e., Hay Market (two words) Lodge,” according to the account in Haymarket: A Town in Transition by Sarah M. Turner. “Subsequently, at the annual Grand Communication of the Grand Lodge of Virginia in 1962, the resolution was adopted.” With 144 members, Hay Market Lodge No. 313 has enjoyed steady growth in numbers, largely due to the increased population growth in the area –especially young families – and a renewed interest in Freemasonry. Such is not the case in other parts of the state where the population is aging, declining or both, according to Jim Kraut, of Heritage Hunt, who also serves as District Membership Coordinator. The Hay Market Lodge Charitable Foundation Inc., a 501-C3A non-profit charity, received major funding from the estate of the late Lloyd and Mae Van Horn, long-standing members of the Haymarket community. “It is in their name that contributions to charities are made by the Lodge,” according to the pamphlet, “Freemasonry: A Means of Union for Men of Strong Ethical Values,” distributed by the lodge. “Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Van Horn exemplified the ‘Way of Life’ that is a Freemason. His deeds continue to benefit mankind beyond his time.” Mr. Van Horn died in 1994. In their February 2011 proclamation, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors recognized that the principal goal of Freemasons is “…to improve and strengthen the character of Individual men, and through the individual, the character of the community,” and that “Freemasonry has been a force in Society … for good in our County through Masons’ involvement in a host of charitable, educational and community supporting activities.” With a strong state and national organization, clear direction and inspired leadership, the future of Hay Market Lodge No. 313 is bright, as it enters its second century.

What is Freemasonry? According to the Masonic Philanthropies, “Freemasonry (or Masonry) is a voluntary society of men who are drawn together by their common desire to seek ideals which have the most worth in the world, and exalt the dignity of every person and the human side of our daily activities. To attain these ideals, Freemasons meet in local lodges to learn the lessons of the great intellects of the ages, and to apply this knowledge to their daily lives.” Masons trace their roots back to the skilled builders of the great Gothic cathedrals and other magnificent structures. When the Gothic architecture period ended in the late 17th century, Masons still gathered in lodges for the purpose of passing on to new generations their personal code of conduct. This honored origin is recalled in the Masonic Seal, with the square and compasses. Distinguished Masons over the years include 16 U.S. presidents, including George Washington, and several signers of the Declaration of Independence. Others include Virginians Chief Justice John Marshall and governors Harry Flood Byrd II and James Gilmore. Masonry is a fraternal organization, not a charity or religion, but rather “a society of men of strong ethical values who do good works.” Efforts in Haymarket in this regard include the child fingerprinting ID program (with the Prince William and Fauquier County Sheriff’s Offices); charitable grants provided each year through the Hay Market Lodge Charitable Foundation Inc.; providing funds for academic scholarships through the Grand Lodge of Virginia; and encouraging individual members to give volunteer hours assisting others in the community. Freemasonry is the oldest and largest men’s organization in the world, with an estimated four million Masons worldwide, meeting in 34,000 lodges in 54 countries. There are about three million Masons in the U.S., and 55,000 in Virginia, meeting in 350 local lodges. Hay Market Lodge No. 313 currently has 144 members. Unlike some other countries, each state in the U.S. has its own Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge of Virginia is in Richmond. Some of the more familiar orders within the Family of Freemasonry include The Scottish Rite, The York Rite, the Shriners, The Grottoes, The Tall Cedars of Lebanon and The Masonic Service Association. Relatives of Masons, especially wives, can join The Eastern Star. Hay Market Chapter 123, Order of the Eastern Star, was chartered on April 25, 1975 and meets at the lodge. Membership in the Masons is strictly voluntary, and there is no effort made to recruit new members. But if a man is interested in becoming a Mason, all he has to do is ask a Masonic friend for more information, or contact the Grand Lodge of Virginia.

Fauquier Health Prevent Colon Cancer with a Colonoscopy June is the month when we give a special nod to the men in our lives. Father’s Day is June 19, and June is also Men’s Health Month. Although colon cancer is the third most common kind of cancer for adults of either gender, some evidence suggests that men especially may benefit from earlier screening. For men, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths. Dr. Esther Bahk of Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas, is a great believer in preventive medicine. She explains that colon cancer is a largely preventable disease. “A colonoscopy is a very effective tool for colon cancer prevention. Everyone age 50 or older should discuss colonoscopy and other screening options with their healthcare providers.” Colon screening can detect polyps — growths that doctors can remove before they turn into cancer. Experts advise that colorectal cancer screening should begin at age 50, but a recent study of people ages 55 to 70 revealed that only about half of them had been screened. One reason for the hesitancy seems to be a perception that preparation for a colonoscopy is timeconsuming and difficult. It may help to remember that although sometimes uncomfortable, a colonoscopy is an extremely effective test that can spot cancer in its early stages. The benefits far outweigh any possible short-term discomfort.

Dr. Esther Bahk

Be Prepared For a clear view of the colon during examination, it must be clean. Bowel prep, as it is called, requires all solids to be emptied from the gastrointestinal tract before the colonoscopy.

This process takes from one to three days, using cleansing solutions followed by a clear liquid diet. Prior to your colonoscopy, your doctor will give you exact preparation instructions, along with bowel-clearing liquid or tablets. Drink lots of water and other clear liquids, such as sports drinks, strained fruit juice, fat-free broth, tea and soft drinks. For variety, try clear Jell-O and popsicles. Staying hydrated can help prevent discomfort. To ease the preparation, wear comfortable clothing; make sure to leave enough time for the process; and add ginger, lime or flavored drink powder to the prep liquid, but avoid flavorings with purple, blue or red dye.

Fauquier Health will welcome a new endocrinologist this summer. Dr. Lida Tabatabaeian is a diabetes specialist and will begin working with Fauquier Health Endocrinology in July. She will see patients one day a week at Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas. Dr. Tabatabaeian can be reached at (703) 743-7300.

Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Dr. Jairo Torres will present a lecture, “Chronic Ear Infections: What parents Need to Know” at 7 p.m. on June 1 in the Sycamore Room at Fauquier Hospital. Does business success mean grow bigger and toss off the sole proprietor moniker? When small business owners start to consider incorporating, surprisingly the advice is often “No, not now, the rules are more beneficial to not being incorporated." One key - If you live on your profit, you have nothing to shelter. Corporations are a separate entity from the business owner. Corporations have their own legal status, property, rights and liabilities, fees and paperwork. The money and assets belong to the corporation, not the individual or shareholders. Test your business for a couple of years then decide. Is your intention to go big or are you giving this dream a shot? One motivator to staying small is less reporting headaches; for instance simpler tax prep. Not necessarily easy, (you still need to have beautiful record keeping and understand what is deductable, regardless of who prepares your taxes)

oes d by: Jerole Nelson

but simpler than a corporation.

Here’s another “soft” reason: small can be happier. When you run your own business, you can chose to stay small, and keep the business the way you want it. Once an owner decides to do that, the pressure to compete with the big dudes is lifted. Many small business owners just want to work for themselves doing something they care about. Financial return is an obvious factor, but, passion, and lifestyle flexibility carry a lot of weight too. It is true that small business owners do make less on average than their W2 counterparts, and less than their own previous W2 lives yielded. Yet, they stay. We usually use sales, profit, and growth to measure business success.

Summers arrival brings with it a number of things that are unique, we embrace long sunny days, ice cream cones, sunscreen, outdoor seating, backyard barbecues and of course baseball. Playing in the highly competitive Valley Baseball League (VBL), the Haymarket Senators are an energetic, collegiate level team rooted in Haymarket. Ball players with outstanding skills from across the country, knowledgeable coaches and the charismatic owners create this team bringing Haymarket a season of events for everyone to enjoy. “We want good players out there but we look for character because we represent Haymarket,” Owner Bernie Schaffler said. The heart of its current owners, Schaffler with his wife Robin and Scott and Jayme Newell, hold this

12

not-for-profit ball club together. Taking over the team in the 2007 the foursome elevated the Senators into a winning program with the support of the community. By 2009 the Senators fought 11 other teams in the wooden bat league to become the VBL Champions. The VBL has produced over 1,000 professional players since its existence making it a desirable as well as elite place for serious players. The Senators themselves have produced major league players like Josh Judy, a relief pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. Many minor league teams also have former Senators players. “It’s a cool thing to watch these kids grow as players and professionals,” Schaffler said. In addition to the players maturing, this is a developmental stage for coaches too. Ryan Fecteau began coaching the Senators in 2008, gaining the necessary experience he was hired as the Assistant Head Coach and Recruiter for Bryant University in Rhode Island. His involvement with this ball club helped shape his career and gave him the exposure he needed

in order to arrive at the next level. Fecteau worked hard this off-season to form a team that would represent Haymarket well with individual qualities and another successful season. “Ryan was instrumental in putting this year’s team together,” Schaffler stated. “We have a nationwide team, the best of the east and west are here.” Twenty-six players representing 16 different schools will present their own sense of style and flair on the field. Schools like Wake Forest, California State University, University of Massachusetts, University of Connecticut, and West Virginia University to name a few. Four players will be returning to proudly wear the letter H again this summer: Jimmy Dowdell an outfielder from Boston College, Jason Boyer a left handed pitcher from Florida Atlantic University, Sean Lyons an outfielder from Northeastern University, and Grant Sasser a left handed pitcher from North Carolina State. “Sasser is the only player to return for four years,

Haymarket LifestyLe

which is unheard of,” Schaffler mentioned. “It says that we are a good club and we take care of our guys!” The Senators also welcome two new coaches this year from California, Head Coach Justin Aspengren and Pitching Coach Nate Klein. Both played and now coach at Santa Barbara City College, together they have uniformity in coaching procedures as well as enthusiasm and determination to win. The players bring the game to our community but our community brought the players. All players and coaches are housed using a host family. Families throughout the area graciously open their homes to the team providing them temporary housing for the summer. Host families provide an unspoken support system for players, being that they are miles away from friends and family. Comforts like homemade meals always help ease homesickness. The “Feed the Senator’s Fund,” where volunteers sign up for a designated home

game to provide the team with a home cooked meal. They’ve had everything from baked ziti to pancake dinners. They’ve ordered 85 chicken sandwiches at Chick-fil-A or 20 large pizzas at a local pizza joint to keep the guys happy and not hungry. “We want this to be a good place, Schaffler explained. “We want these players to go back to their colleges and their coaches to tell them Haymarket was a great place and we were taken care of!” The 2010 season brought an impressive 8,000 fans to the stands at Battlefield High School to cheer on the Senators. Friendly crowds at the games are a mix of adults, teens and children. Chanting, yelling, and excitement is all around, children are running and playing in the open space and chasing foul balls. It is common to see the kids hanging near the dugouts, waiting to talk to the players they idolize. The games are entertaining with activities between the innings for fans and kids to

participate in. The Hamburger/ Hot Dog race is a favorite; two kids from the stands are selected to wear a boisterous hat with a hot dog or a hamburger on it. They jump into a couple of inner tubes and race from home plate to first base and back. The winning baseball snack goes on sale at the concession stand. The concession stand like most sells snacks, quick bites and a Senator’s special drink called Natorade. Shirts and Hats are available to represent Haymarket’s team. “It’s a big tailgate where families can come and enjoy themselves, even if you don’t like baseball,” smiled Schaffler. Come out on June 4th at 7:30 for their season opener against the Front Royal Cardinals. Tickets are $5 for each adult and $3 for children 12 years old and younger. Season passes are also available for the dedicated fan. For more information visit their website at www.haymarketbaseball.com.

Haymarket Senators will be hosting 3 separate camps in June and July. All camps are from 9am-1pm, ages 6- 13 both boys and girls. With 20 hours of instruction they will learn hitting, pitching, catching, and fielding. Each child will also receive a t-shirt and a 2011 season pass! June 27 – July 1 | July 5 – July 8 | July 13 – July 15

Want to get involved with the Senators? There are plenty of opportunities. Consider becoming a host family, volunteer at the games, an intern looking for experience, inning sponsor, monetary donor or Feed the Senators. The Blog!

No, It’s Not the Latest Sci-Fi Movie by: Jamie Gorman Web Logs, commonly known as “blogs,” have been around for a number of years - but over the last couple, with simpler tools and the onset of social media, they have become more mainstream. And they aren’t just for businesses, the technical savvy and professional writers; blogs can be set up and published by almost anyone. In fact, with the ease of inserting pictures and video you don’t even need to do much writing for your blog!

What is Blogging? A blog is simply a special type of web site that is designed for publishing frequent online articles and notifying “subscribers” when those articles are posted. If a web site is like a book or brochure that doesn’t change too often, then a blog is like a magazine or newspaper, which is published periodically and then pushed out to subscribers. Whenever a new article is posted to the blog by the author, subscribers receive an update by email or other means to inform them that there is a new post. So, when you find an interesting blog to follow, instead of having to go back to the site and check for new posts you can subscribe and be notified when there is a new post.

Whereas, a blog is a series of posts that the author develops to establish expertise, entertain or just start a discussion! The most common calls to action are to read and comment on the article or to click on advertising links. (SigmaBizBlog.com)

A “blogger” is someone who writes articles, or “posts” to their blog site. A blogger can write about any topic and usually picks something they enjoy or have a high level of expertise. Another advantage of using a blog is that it provides readers the capability to comment on each article, creating a very effective way for bloggers to have a two-way discussion with their readers!

Subscribe, Discuss and Share Blogs provide information and entertainment on a wide variety of topics. They can be long or short and include pictures, music and video. When you find a blog that you like it is easy to subscribe to the blog so that you are notified each time the blog is updated. Just look for the orange symbol on the page or in your browser window and follow the instructions. Web sites are typically focused on the promotion of products and services with a call to action of clicking on a product links. (www.sigmabizlearning.com) 16

Have you ever finished reading an article in one of your favorite magazines or newspapers and had the immediate urge to ask the author a question or share your own experience on the topic? Most blogs have a “comments” section on the bottom that lets readers provide feedback and ask questions. This online discussion between readers and the author is often the most valuable part of the blog post!

One of the things that helps make blogs so popular is the ease of sharing the good ones with friends through social media channels, like Facebook and Twitter. This online sharing of the best content provides a media that can take a good post viral if the right people like the content. As a reader, sharing the right blog posts over time can make you a trusted source of good information, but as a blogger, publishing great content builds a tremendous online presence that can help grow business or a career!

Blogging is a great tool for self-publishing online content and pushing it to subscribers, and there are several reasons and benefits to creating and writing your own blog. Personal

Many bloggers post just for the fun of it. They write about hobbies, topics of interest, politics and just life happenings – they simply enjoy their subject and like to write about it. Sometimes these blogs start out as a hobby and then gather large amounts of traffic, resulting in a blog that can become a professional asset or even its own business! Professional and Business Credibility

If you are a professional or expert in your field, blogging is a great way to establish credibility in your industry. Being published for most professionals is a big stepping stone for their career, primarily because it shows they’ve reached the point of expertise to put their opinions 18

and conclusions out in front of other professionals for analysis and comment. Although a blog is self-published, it still has the effect of laying out your professional thoughts to the world for criticism and discussion. Over time, blogging can establish you as a known expert in your field - definitely a boost when looking for that promotion or new job opportunity. In much the same way a person can blog for professional credibility, a business can blog to build their credibility with customers and potential customers. Blogs are used by businesses in every industry to write about products, the need for their products and how they can fill specific customer needs. They can also be used to highlight the expertise of key employees, discuss industry news and solicit feedback from customers.

Online Presence

Many businesses use a blog primarily to improve their online presence and rank themselves higher in the search engines. Search engines use things like key words and the number of relevant links from other sites to place the best results on the first page when you search for something on the web. It turns out that blog posts on industry and product topics usually include the same key words that customers use to search for those products online. This, along with well placed links, can be a big help in putting a business on the first page of search results, making them more likely to be the first call a customer makes. Make Money

Great content that entertains, informs or shocks - drawing viewers, listeners Haymarket LifestyLe

and readers - is always an opportunity to make money! Searched for technical support for a computer or how to fix a leaky faucet lately? It probably landed you on a blog page with a relevant article surrounded by advertising. A blog that draws traffic looking for the type of products your business sells can be a great place to advertise. Many blogs that start as a hobby or other reason end up building enough traffic to be an advertising media. A blog can also be used to sell your products and services directly online. By drawing potential customers with great and relevant content, a business can begin the online sales process by linking to their catalogue or ordering process.

Becoming a Blogger Free blogs through Google Blogger or WordPress are a great way to start blogging and offer many options. But if you decide that the blog is more than just a hobby, it is worth the money to “host” your blog with a paid service. The primary advantage is in the number and variety of “plug-ins”, add-on applications

that add functionality to your blog, that you can access and use. The hard part of blogging is consistently writing and adding content. Most bloggers will tell you that the set-up and technical aspects of posting a blog are the easy part. Thinking of topics and actually writing the posts are what put an end to most budding bloggers! Experts will tell you that in order to build subscribers and be effective at blogging, it is important to blog at least multiple times per week, and professional bloggers who sell advertising post multiple times per day. That means 100 topics to create and write each year! Of course, if your goal is to have fun as a hobbyist blogger with no aspirations of a large fan base, posting a couple times per month can be very satisfying. Business owners often come to me, having heard about the business and professional advantages of blogging. Before spending the time and accepting money to set up their blog, I advise them to go home and write 3 potential blog posts of 350-500 words each. This is a

good exercise to gauge the amount of time it takes to write a post and assess their ability to come up with interesting and engaging topics related to their industry. It also gives them a head start on writing and something to post once we have the blog set up.

The Next Step! A good technique for any blogger is to always leave the reader with a next step – inviting a comment, sharing the post or clicking a link. The next step for this post is to leave you with a few links for some experienced local and professional bloggers that you might want to check out and even subscribe!

MATTERS

Dog Days of Summer We’ve talked to local experts on adopting and incorporating new pets into your family as well as lifestyle. The Prince William County Animal Shelter provided us with guidelines to help select the right furry friend and Doggie Delights, a specialty pet store offered insight on integrating your new addition and tips to pet ownership.

Picking a Pup by: Lt. Dawn Harman

Thinking of adding a new member to your family? Spring is a great time to adopt a dog from the Prince William County Animal Shelter. Choosing to bring a dog into your home is a major decision, so make sure you are ready to invest your time and energy. It is also important that you are prepared for the financial responsibility that comes with dog ownership. Owning a dog is an investment. Depending on the type and age of the dog you select, you can plan to spend the following:

+

e Your Dog Hom g in g in r B s 0 0 4 $200 xams/Vaccine /E s it is V t e V l ia $100-300 Init and Collar $20-50 Leash $25-150 Toys ming $30-500 Groo ing $50-200 Bedd d $250-700 Foo $1,000-2,800

Annually

If you are prepared to make the financial investment, then selecting the perfect dog for you requires some self-examination. Think about the size of dog you would like. Would you prefer a small dog you can carry around or are you a giant dog breed lover? If you are not sure, a medium sized dog would probably be best. Keep in mind, small dogs are more vulnerable to injury and more sensitive to colder temperatures, whereas large breeds need a lot of room to move around and may have long “happy” tails, that when wagging can cause damage to small objects in the home. Don’t forget to consider the age of the dog when selecting your companion. Puppies are cute but require lots of attention and housebreaking. Adult dogs might be a better choice if you want to have a better idea of the temperament and energy level of the dog. But, be aware that just because the dog is an adult, it does not mean it has had any training! Senior dogs also need homes and are less likely to get selected from the Shelter. If you can devote some special attention to an older dog who will likely require more veterinary care -- then a senior dog may be for you. Activity level is another factor. If you cannot commit to more than one or two leisurely walks per day, then a low energy breed like a Basset Hound might be a good fit. If you want a companion to jog and play with, a breed like the Border Collie might suit you. Be willing to adjust your attention and exercise levels to fit your dog. dog days continued on page 22 Haymarket Lifestyle

digging, excessive barking, chewing, and raiding the trash. These behaviors are sometimes reasons dogs are surrendered to the Animal Shelter. To prevent behavior problems, dogs should have both physical and mental workouts. Games such as tug of war and fetch provide exercise but also reinforce the

“But dog ownership gives the dog something it needs: a job. Dogs need to stay busy and engaged to lead full and happy lives. Dogs are a great way to enrich your life by providing companionship. But dog ownership gives the dog something it needs: a job. Dogs need to stay busy and engaged to lead full and happy lives. Many problem behaviors exist in dogs because they sit at home, bored and waiting for their owner to return home. This restlessness can get overwhelming and cause destructive behaviors, like

bond you have with your dog. Warmer weather provides a better environment for longer walks, trips to the park, car rides, and working in the yard. Being outside more invites the opportunity for your dog to run off. The Animal Shelter recommends all dogs be micro-chipped for identification, in addition to wearing their collar and county dog license. The Shelter

provides micro-chipping to all dogs adopted at the Shelter at no additional cost to the owner and most veterinarians provide this service for pets. Bugs also love the warm weather. A flea and tick control program will help to keep your dog healthy and a veterinarian can recommend a program that is right for your family. The Animal Shelter is open for adoptions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Thursday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Beginning July 1, the adoption fee will be $45, which will include basic vaccinations, micro chipping, and a starter kit. An additional fee may apply if the dog has not been spayed or neutered at the time of adoption. The dog license may also be purchased for any dog with proof of a current rabies vaccination for $10. The Shelter is located at 14807 Bristow Road in Manassas and can be reached by calling 703-792-6465 or by emailing at animalshelter@pwcgov.org.

Tips, Toys, Tricks and Training by: Nick Verna

Summertime is the perfect time to adopt a furry family addition. Most families have more time during the summer to devote to a new pet since there are more daylight hours and children are often home from school. This means more time to bond with your pet. Also, outdoor play and training provides more room for active pets to romp. Remember that adoption will involve a commitment to good pet care that will require both time and money. Time to spend with your new pet to bond, to do training and to generally hang out together. veterinary well-care, boarding kennel or home care for when you’re away, etc. You also need a plan for emergencies, like a trusted person who can access your home if need be and a credit card or savings to handle unexpected medical costs. When adopting a puppy or kitten, plan to take them to see a veterinarian as soon as possible when introducing them into a new home with other pets. Kittens and cats especially need to be up-to-date on their FIV and Feline Leukemia shots prior to being allowed around any other family felines. Take your time when selecting an appropriate pet for your family. Be practical – Visiting an animal shelter is an emotional experience and you will be best served to avoid making a decision without thinking it through completely. Once you’ve made your selection and brought the new adoptee home, your new special family adventure begins. The addition of a new pet presents a unique opportunity to teach children about the responsibilities that go along with having a pet. Feeding time, grooming and walks can all be great times for bonding. Your new pet will need its own place to sleep and to eat. For dogs, I recommend a very open (wire) crate with a bed in the back and food and water bowls in the front. The door should be left open. For kittens and cats, their own bed not too far from a litter pan should be enough Both dogs and cats should have their own toys. Don’t use toys that are not meant specifically for dogs and cats. Avoid toys with strings or ribbons and toys that could be easily swallowed. Also watch to make sure that they don’t eat toy stuffing or squeakers. Toy selection is usually a trial and error exercise. A scratching post for cats and kittens will save furniture, and a carpeted climbing tree would be great if possible. If a kitten or cat doesn’t seem to care about a dedicated scratching post or tree, rubbing it with catnip will usually help. Crate training your puppy or dog is something I can’t stress enough. Dogs are den animals. They need a place where they’ll feel safe when they sleep, are scared, don’t feel well or just want to be alone. And a crate is a great way to avoid home-alone problems. For dogs, local dog parks are a great place to take your new pet in order to exercise or in the case of a puppy, to introduce them to other dogs so that they can develop good doggie social skills. Stay close though, because a puppy or small 24

dog unfamiliar with the park may quickly feel overwhelmed by larger dogs. You should make every effort to have a visit to the dog park a happy one. Many parks have special areas for smaller dogs and puppies. Don’t forget that warm/hot weather brings with it a few petunfriendly problems: Paved walkways, parking lots and streets may be hot enough to burn sensitive paw pads. Also car interiors can quickly reach life-threatening temperatures even on overcast summer days. Excess outdoor activity on hot days can cause dehydration and/or heat stroke, so make sure that your pet doesn’t overdo it and that there is always plenty of cool water available. Good nutrition is the foundation for lifelong pet health. Remember that dogs and cats are carnivores and have no need for grains of any kind. Stick with food brands that are owned by dog and cat food companies and stay away from brands that are owned by marketing companies or those that show up on the shelves of big chain stores. Finally, to find the best foods and treats for your new pets, or for advice about foods and treats, visit us at Doggie Delights, 3517 James Madison Highway, Haymarket. BACK UP S NGERS There are garden stars and there are garden support plants. Roses, Peonies, Iris, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Hydrangeas – the big, famous and colorful show plants of the garden all look better when they have some sturdy, less flashy garden-filler flowers planted around them. These are The Supremes to the Diana Ross plants. Three of my favorites are Linum, Penstemon and Verbascum. Linum, or Italian Flax, is about 18 inches tall with light, feathery foliage. On the ends of each arching stem is a little sky blue flower. Penstemons have more range of size and color but Husker Red, with its dark red stems and stalks of white flowers it emphasizes any plant near it. Delphiniums do not do well in Virginia so the best alternative is Verbascum. It has just the right long stem of flowers to give your garden the “Cottage” look. Even better, the deer do not eat any of these and birds and butterflies love them. Add some good backup singers to your garden and it will really make music. Lynne Galluzzo has 4 Reds, 1 Double Red, 1 Double Pink, 1 Blush, 2 Rainbow, 1 White Out and 1 Sunny in her garden in Haymarket. She and her husband live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@ comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz.

Cupcake Heaven

a sweet spot Baking sinful treats on the corner of Washington Street and Old Carolina Road since June of 2008, Cupcake Heaven and CafĂŠ has made Haymarket a little bit sweeter for the last three years. With over 30 years of experience creating unique and sassy cakes out of her home, Kim Newman was approached with an opportunity to bring her fantasy-like creations into the community.

“I felt like this was where I was suppose to be,” Newman described when she checked out their current location. “Things kept lining up and falling into place.” Within a year Cupcake Heaven and Café became a sweet spot serving up delicate hand crafted indulgences that complement their coffee bar. Featuring 40 flavors of cupcakes this little shop has seven consistent flavors: Red Velvet, Vanilla Devine, Chocolate Bliss, Vanilla Almond Raspberry, Classic Yellow, Vanilla with Milk Chocolate, and Cookies n’ Cream. Each is decorated with a mound of icing and glittering adornments on top. Impressively, Newman bakes every single cupcake and hand decorates with the help of two others. The remaining cupcakes are imaginative and truly expressive in their flavor and presentation. “I look everywhere for inspiration,” Newman said. “Websites, television shows, my kids, and just experimenting in the kitchen.” Maple Bacon is savory and sweet with a chopped bacon accent. Margarita, Pina Colada, or Coconut Key Lime are all a little bite of summer. Gingerbread, Pumpkin Pie, Snickerdoodle, White Chocolate Peppermint and Spiced Apple send a taste of the holidays. A childhood favorite came to life from the suggestion of her kids, Peanut Butter and Jelly. Luscious Lemon, Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Caramel, Lemon Berry, Strawberry Squared and Raspberry Cocoa Kiss dazzle the senses with a fruity zing. Chocolate Covered Strawberry and Pink Champagne are delightful for any celebration. These are just a few there are many more fun flavors to try. “We try to keep flavors exclusive to us,” Newman explained. “It’s much more fun that way!” Although specializing in cupcakes, Cupcake Heaven provides a comfortable atmosphere for guests to enjoy including wifi, and an assortment of seating arrangements all tucked away within a cute gift shop. Grab a cup of coffee from their coffee bar or a specialty drink like a latte, espresso or cappuccino. Don’t like coffee? Don’t worry. They have plenty of teas. Accessorize your morning pick-me-up with a freshly made muffin, quiche or fresh fruit. If you aren’t in the mood for breakfast they have an ice cream bar with milkshakes and fruit smoothies. Cupcake Heaven and Café is located at 14950 Washington Street. They are open seven days a week, Monday through Sunday 8:00am until 7:00pm. In addition to the sweets at the café, they take orders for cupcakes and specialty cakes for any occasion and are always looking for an unusual challenge. Stop in to satisfy that pesky sweet tooth or call to place an order at (703)754-6300. -How We Do ItThe restaurants that appear in this section are chosen by Haymarket Lifestyle Magazine (HLM) food critics.
