Is Your Child Prepared for College and Beyond... by Michelle Kelley, LCSW
S
o your child is heading to college this fall. Congratulations!
Emotionally?
Emotional Intelligence: A Critical Yet Underdeveloped Skill
For parents and high school seniors alike, this is an emotionally charged and bittersweet time. It is a time to remember and reflect on your teenager’s personal, academic, athletic and extracurricular achievements and milestones from grade school through high school. It is a time to celebrate their forthcoming graduation, emerging independence and transition into young adulthood.
Today’s children are growing up in an incredibly fastpaced world that allows little time for introspection or the opportunity to gain self-knowledge. Our graduating seniors appear mature, sophisticated and adult in many ways, but they have not been well-schooled in identifying, understanding and managing the emotions that govern their decision making.
It can also be a time of mourning for parents who must come to grips with letting go of the beloved child in whom they have invested so much: so much time, so much hope, so much energy, so much attention, and so much worry.
In my professional experience counseling teenagers and their parents over the past 20+ years, I have observed that many outwardly successful and accomplished high school students are clueless when it comes to understanding and taking care of the emotional dynamics in their lives. This is troubling, because it is human nature for emotions to drive our actions and choices in life. Emotions, more than logic, often dictate the friends we choose, the people we date and marry, the way we spend our leisure and the careers we pursue.
While your teenager is savoring the final days of their high school career and all the traditional rites of passage that go with it -- Senior Prom, graduation ceremonies and graduation parties -- you also deserve to be recognized and commended for all you have done to prepare your child for college, and to promote and develop your child’s selfreliance and independence. You have spent many hours together with your child researching and evaluating college choices, visiting college campuses, and ensuring that college applications were completed and submitted on time. Now that these tasks are behind you, you have yet another important role and mission as a parent: ensuring that your child is emotionally prepared for college.
Equally worrisome is that many parents do not know how to teach the crucial skills of emotional intelligence to their children. There are many reasons why this is so: • Many -- if not most -- adults have never been educated in how to recognize and care for their own emotional needs. How can they teach a skill to their children that they have never learned or put into practice themselves?

• Our schools do not make emotional intelligence part of the regular curricula. Our children are encouraged and expected to excel academically and athletically, but they are not offered any regular, consistent or ongoing instruction in the emotional dimensions of their lives. They are not taught how to recognize and deal with difficult emotions, how to set boundaries to protect themselves in demanding or dangerous relationships, or how to apply critical thinking skills to social and dating relationships. • Our society communicates a double standard. We are taught to believe that displays of emotion are acceptable in women but a sign of weakness in men. How ridiculous! The truth is that emotions are a sign of being human. Understanding, managing and learning how to communicate one’s emotions is a sign of higher intelligence, not a sign of weakness! This is what is commonly referred to as emotional intelligence. When your child arrives at college, he or she will be thrust into a maze of challenging new social situations, dating relationships, temptations, distractions and technology traps. Before sending your child off into this brave new world, I encourage parents to set aside time this summer to discuss and equip your child with the critical thinking and emotional intelligence skills they will need to protect their well-being and ensure their success in college and in life.
The Importance of Developing Critical Thinking Skills
Critical thinking can be traced to the Socratic method of Ancient Greece. It is a process of asking questions to trigger a deeper level of thinking and understanding. It is an important skill that everyone should develop, and should be considered a part of formal education. It is imperative that your child develop and strengthen their critical thinking skills to ensure that they do not make emotion-based decisions that will undermine their prospects for success in college, life, and future careers. Your child must also learn how to understand and skillfully navigate the emotional dynamics in social and dating relationships, so as to make wise and healthy decisions for themselves and others.
Information technologies and social media enable us to communicate with others in ways that are exciting, challenging . . . and potentially dangerous. Our children are growing up in a world where a single impulsive or illconsidered posting on Facebook or Twitter can be shared instantaneously and broadly, with serious and detrimental consequences for one’s career and personal well-being. Many teenagers that I have counseled do not fully grasp the longterm and potentially harmful consequences of social media communications. They do not understand that the photos, comments and personal information that they post and share with friends online may be viewed by college admissions officers, future employers and others, thereby putting their reputations, relationships and future employment prospects at risk.
How Critical Thinking Skills Can Save A Teen’s Life
Critical thinking skills can be life-saving. Many of today’s parents are fearful that their child will be tempted to drink and drive or drive and text, thereby jeopardizing their own safety and the safety of others. It’s not enough to tell your child not to text and drive or not to get in the car with someone who has been drinking. Today’s teenagers need to (1) know their options, (2) practice speaking up for themselves in uncomfortable, difficult or dangerous situations, and (3) have the confidence and discernment to speak up and when necessary, remove themselves from dangerous situations. This is where critical thinking skills can be applied. Does your teenager know what to do if he/she were at a party where they felt uncomfortable due to some type of illegal, inappropriate, or harmful activity taking place? Your teenager needs to develop discernment and street smarts to deal with such situations, as well as the confidence to speak up and take appropriate action on his or her own behalf.
Role Playing Reinforces Critical Thinking Skills
Often times a teen has not learned or practiced the phrases and language that will help him or her to speak up confidently or walk away from a potentially dangerous situation. In difficult or uncomfortable situations, your teenager may be paralyzed by feelings of guilt or confusion that impede his critical thinking capacity and ability to act wisely and confidently. This is where role playing can help. During role playing, teenagers practice speaking up for themselves and embed key phrases into their subconscious so they can better access the language they need when the occasion calls for it. Most teens are not able to think through or anticipate all the possible short-term and long-term outcomes and consequences of their own activity or the activity of those around them. Teenagers often harbor unconscious emotions and fears that can easily become obstacles, keeping them from making good decisions. emotional preparedness continued on page 10

emotional preparedness continued from page 8
These are the types of conversations and discussions that parents need to be having with their teens before they set off for college -- and not just once! When I work with teens I will often do role playing to help them develop and strengthen their critical thinking skills. Knowing what to say is not enough. Your teenager must be able to speak up confidently in difficult situations. This is especially important if your child has a people pleaser personality type.
How Emotional Intelligence Can Improve the Quality of Your Teenager’s Life
Next Steps: Preparing Your Child for the Emotional Demands of College • If you haven’t already done so, initiate a conversation with your child about the topics discussed above. Be casual and friendly; nothing turns a teen off more than making a big deal out of something. • Be a calm and supportive presence in your teen’s life. Avoid being critical or judgmental. You want to be the person your child turns to when they need help.
As stated above, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your emotional and social world. To succeed in college and in life, your teenager will need to know how to handle:
• If your child already struggles with anxiety or depression, don’t assume these symptoms will go away on their own. Seek out professional and compassionate help before they leave for college.
• Disappointments
• Enroll your teenager in a course or seminar that will help foster these very important tools. There are many worthwhile programs available and will be beneficial during their development into adulthood.
• Break-ups • Academic struggles • Difficult social situations & difficult personality types • Technology traps
Possible Obstacles to Developing Emotional Intelligence • Fragile self-esteem • Anxiety • Depression
Even though your teenager may be eager to break free of your supervision and involvement in her life, you still have an important role to play in supporting and guiding their decision making. Teens heading off to college are most likely experiencing a mixture of excitement and anxiety about what’s to come. Whether they acknowledge it or not, they still need your love, guidance and support. Make sure your child is well equipped to handle life’s difficult moments. They are meant to be speed bumps -- not road blocks.
• Loneliness • Insecurity

HAYMARKET GAINESVILLE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
Be Wise & Optimize Search Engine Optimization (SEO) In the beginning, all your business needed was to create a website and your customers would come. Now, in order for your business to be found it is essential to utilize keywords it the text of your website to be search engine optimized (SEO). SEO requires you to pay attention to the keywords the search engines use to index your website. Potential customers use keywords to search for your business, products and services. Here is a short list of the things you can do to make your website search engine optimized: 1 Create a Google Analytics account (www.google.com/analytics) and add the Java code to all pages of the website. The statistics it gathers will allow you to see how many potential customers are coming to your website, what search terms they used, what pages they looked at, where they came from, and how long they stayed on the website. 2 Setup a Google Webmaster Tools account and link it to the Google Analytics account so information will be shared between the two accounts. Google will crawl and index your website and learn about specific problems you could be creating without knowing. It also discovers other links to your websites. Create a sitemap.xml file, upload to your website, and link the file to Google Webmaster Tools. 3 The title and meta description tags for each page of the website needs to be unique. The search engines review each of the tags and if it finds duplicate text it does not index the duplicate pages. Title tag needs to be about 70 characters in length with two to three keywords, your company name, and your location. Meta description text, about 150 characters, needs to describe what is on the page. 4 Add a description tag to all images with keywords, this gives the search engines additional text for indexing your website, it also allows your website to be 508 compliance (disability accessibility). 5 Make sure your potential customers can easily find your business by address and phone number. Put your phone number in the top of your website in text form so smartphones can call you with one click. 6 Content needs to be fresh, updated regularly, and is crucial for increasing traffic. Consider integrating a blog into your website and writing articles about your products, services, and business activities. 7 Setup social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yelp) link to them and post frequent information that links back to your website. If all of this seems confusing, follow my advice,

take your WORKOUT with you! by Gunny Barker
packable workout equipment for any vacation
Do you ever skip workouts when you go out of town? Maybe you find it hard to stick to a routine when your daily schedule changes, or when you don’t have the equipment you normally use. Or perhaps you’re like me, and you’re not very keen on the idea of having to share the hotel exercise room, which normally is just a tad bigger than my closet, with two other people who are pounding out a hamster workout (sorry, not a fan of treadmills) with the Today Show blaring on the TV. Oh, and no thanks, I’ll take a pass on the1970’s recumbent bike too! Whatever the reason, I am now about to make it much harder for you to get away with not exercising the next time you go on the road. Sure exercise can be difficult when you’re out of town, but this is the perfect opportunity to breathe some life into your routine and do something different. Being limited in the amount of time you have and the type of equipment available can actually be a good thing, since you’ll have to be creative and come up with different ways to work your body. So I teach my clients how they can perform some phenomenal calorie burning and muscle building workouts using only their body weight and something they can easily throw into a suitcase or backpack. While serving in the Marine Corps, this is how we had to train whenever we deployed, so we had no choice but to get creative with bodyweight exercises and our workouts. Over the many years I served with the Marines, and now as a Master Fitness trainer, I’ve been able to come up with a lot of different ways to challenge and work your body with little or no equipment at all. This all being said, I wanted to provide you with some helpful tips on what you can do the next time you go on the road for business or vacation. vacation continued on page 16

You Can Take it With You
OK, packing your dumbbells and your weight bench for a trip is a dumb idea, but if you don’t have a clue whether the hotel you are staying at has a decent exercise room, here are some great alternatives:
Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are awesome for so many reasons. First, you can do everything with these babies. There’s not a body part you cannot target with one little resistance band, and since you have tension throughout the entire movement, you’ll really feel the burn, and the pump! Secondly, you can wad these up and stuff them into your suitcase or backpack without taking up a lot of room. Perhaps best of all, you can use resistance bands anywhere, whether you’re in a hotel room, at the beach, camping at the lake, or even in your office for that matter (just be sure to close the door so they don’t hear you grunting).
Super Bands
Superbands are another big favorite of mine. They are much different than resistance bands and they will provide you with a completely different workout. Unlike resistance bands, which have handles to grip on each end, superbands look like a big thick rubber band, and they come available in many different levels of resistance. Like resistance bands, you can get real creative with superbands and have yourself a phenomenal full-body workout in about twenty minutes, and do so just about anywhere. These bands are absolutely band-astic!
Jump Rope
Why is it that so many people become enamored with all the latest fancy exercise machines and gadgets, but always seem to forget about the basic exercises that produce the greatest results? Since TSA probably won’t let you get away with stuffing a pull-up bar in your suitcase, let’s talk about what the mighty jump rope can do for you. Jumping rope is an excellent exercise for your heart and body, and can also really help you torch some serious calories. Plus, while jumping rope, you’ll also work on your balance and coordination, and particularly so when you try jumping rope on one foot. Have you forgotten what a great workout a jump rope can provide? If so, get yourself a stop watch and give this quick workout a try: Start out by jumping rope for one minute, then immediately drop to the floor and start doing push-ups for 1 minute. Continue switching back and forth between jumping rope for 1 minute, and performing push-ups for 1 minute. Continue for a total of 12 minutes, with no rest between sets. Oh, and make sure you get all the way down on those push-ups!
Suspension Straps
Suspension strap training has become very popular and it’s a great way to train for people of all ages and abilities. This type of workout uses suspension training exercise straps to use a person’s bodyweight as well as gravity to provide resistance. Suspension straps are extremely effective at developing core and muscular strength, balance, joint stability, and endurance. TRX, which was created by a former Navy Seal, is without a doubt the most popular suspension strap training system out there today, but there are several other companies who make suspension straps which are very comparable to TRX, and about half the cost. Like resistance bands and superbands, suspension strap training can be done just about anywhere, so long as you can find a place to hang your straps, which is not very difficult if you’re willing to get a little creative. For example, when performing suspension strap training in my boot camp classes, we’ve used everything from monkey bars at the playground, field goal posts, and even hung the straps from tree branches. Whatever your destination, a little advance planning can ensure that you stay on track with your exercise program. Hopefully, I’ve been able to convince you that the next time you go on the road there really isn’t a good excuse for missing a workout. Oh, and if you do decide to take me up on getting in some workouts with the bands, jump rope or suspension straps, chances are pretty good you just might stick with these for all of your workouts, whether at home or on the road, and forget about all those fancy machines and gadgets in the gym. History
Historic property is part of the past – and the future
Oakwood at Catharpin by John T. Toler
While development has come to other parts of the Catharpin area, the owners of Oakwood, on the southeast corner of the intersection of Sudley and Catharpin roads, are committed to maintaining the original character of the property: agriculture and open space.
along with his brothers Thomas and James, “…owned or leased land in the Catharpin Run vicinity,” according to the survey done by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission in 1979. “The oldest part of the house was built about 1830.”
Dr. Edith Kennedy, D.A., an associate dean at the Warrenton Campus of Lord Fairfax Community College, owns 30 acres of the Oakwood tract, including the site of the long-gone historic home. Two years ago, Dr. Kennedy established a Chesapeake Bay Friendly Model Horse Farm on the property.
Mrs. Kennedy, who was very familiar with the house, believes that part of it was much older, perhaps built as early as the mid-1700s. Recalling the structure in later years, she remembers the older part separated from later construction by a brick wall. “It was definitely two houses joined together,” she said.
Family members own the rest of the 100-acre Oakwood tract. Dr. Kennedy’s parents, Thomas and Frances Kennedy, live on an adjoining property, and her uncle, Joe Miller and brother, Steven Kennedy also have homes on the original Oakwood property.
At the time, the property was known as Annfield. It is described as being of log-and-frame construction, with six small rooms along a central hallway. There was a large kitchen separate from the main house, connected by a covered porch.
Early History
In those days, the large estates around Haymarket were owned by a few prominent families, many of who intermarried, and eventually passed the properties to their
The history of Oakwood goes back to the late 1700s or early 1800s, when the land was owned by Richard Newman, who In this photo of the north side of Oakwood taken in the early 1960s, one can see ‘Aunt Mary’ Miller standing by the doorway, and her husband, ‘Uncle Freddy’ seated on the steps. 20

children. The next owner of Annfield was Francis W. Lewis (1822-1913), the son of Rev. John Lewis, whose family also once owned Portici and Stepney. Francis Lewis and many of his family are buried in the old cemetery that was once part of Stepney. Sarah Carter Ball (1803-1875) was the next owner of Annfield. Known by most as “Miss Sally,” she was the daughter of Landon Carter (1768-1858) of Woodlands, in Loudoun County; granddaughter of John Carter (17391789) of Sudley; and great-granddaughter of Landon Carter (1710-1779) of Sabine Hall. She was married to Alfred Ball (1798-1853), the son of Spencer Ball (1762-1832) and Elizabeth Landon Carter Ball of Portici.
Parts of the main house at Oakwood may have dated back to the mid1700s, and were enclosed in the large expansion done around 1900.
“Sarah Carter Ball was much beloved in the community, and remembered for her kindness and generosity.
house and altered the remainder” during his ownership.
“Apparently she took as her role model the ‘virtuous woman;’ described in the last chapter of Proverbs, who was proficient in many vocations, but particularly stretched out her hand to the poor and needy,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places an Its People.
The resulting structure was described as “A two-story, gable-roofed, frame constructed L-shaped weather boarded house on a high stone basement,” in the VHLC survey. It had a two-story wing on the south side of the main house, connected by a one-story passageway.
“Annfield had been acquired by Francis W. Lewis, who after he had inherited Portici conveyed the property to the widow of his uncle Alfred Ball, thereby exchanging homes with his aunt. Sarah Carter Ball later inherited a 200-acre tract adjoining Sudley Mill. This she sold in parcels to former slaves, but retained nine and one-half acres for sentimental reasons.” Alfred and Sarah Carter Ball are buried in the family cemetery at Portici.
There was a two-story porch in the ell on the east side of the main house, and a large, two-story bay window on the west side. It is believed that the name was changed to Oakwood during the Metcalf ownership, in recognition of the huge, vintage oak trees near the house.
By 1900, Annfield was owned by Joseph E. Metcalf, and according to the Works Progress Administration report written in 1936, Metcalf “…allegedly demolished a part of the
In 1910, Oakwood was purchased by Charles R. Macdonald (1862-1939), a relative of the Metcalfs. He was already familiar with the area before moving to Prince William County from Pennsylvania, where he was an executive with a coal company. A skilled administrator, Mr. Macdonald served as the Prince William County Superintendent of Schools from 1916 to 1925. “The Macdonalds came to Oakwood as bride and groom in July 1910. They joined Sudley Church four months later,” according to History in a Horseshoe Curve: The Story of Sudley Methodist Church and Its Community. “His devotion to Sudley never waned.” It is recalled that the Macdonalds hosted many church meetings, picnics and ice cream socials at Oakwood. The Macdonalds built a tenant house on the property in 1920, which served as the home of Charles Berry for many years. After Mr. Macdonald’s death, the next owner of Oakwood was George Riley, overseer of roads for Prince William County.
Dun Roman and the Millers
In the mid-1950s, Oakwood was purchased by Edith Kennedy’s great-aunt and uncle, Frederick (1907-1969) and Mary Frances Digges Miller (1904-1988), who renamed the property Dun Roman. Before coming to Prince William County, the Millers had a farm in Laurel, Md., as well as holding steady jobs in the Often mentioned in histories of Oakwood but rarely seen, the wooden hinges and batten doors in the attic were indeed unique. 22

William J. Bronaugh While it is likely there are other graves at Oakwood, the large gravestone marking the resting place of William Bronaugh has long held the interest of those living there. The writing has become faded and worn, but years ago, Mrs. Frances Kennedy transcribed William’s epitaph, one of the longest, if not most eloquent one will find. Sacred to the Memory of William J. Here rests from all the cares of fleeting life A youth whose early worth our praises claim. His human bosom was unknown to strife And all his actions brought increase of fame. Thro habit virtuous, and from reason just When round his heart death’s gloomy terrors play He did not alter life’s allurements lust But neatly smiling, heaven’s decree obeyed. When ere his friends shall view this darksome grave, When ere upon his virtues they reflect The mourning tear will fall, the heartfelt sigh will heave By tender passions all their soul be decked.

Washington, D.C. area. “Uncle Freddy” worked for Safeway groceries stores, and “Aunt Mary” for Southern Railway at Union Station in Washington. Both were entrepreneurs, and were always busy starting businesses of their own, including a restaurant in Laurel. Born in Bealeton, Va., Aunt Mary was familiar with the Northern Virginia area as well, and it was while they were running the Cherokee Motel in Fairfax County that they decided to buy Oakwood, which soon became known as Dun Roman. Indeed, they were “done roamin,’” and would spend the rest of their lives there, working the land and raising a variety of farm animals. Aunt Mary was especially fond of her birds, including chickens, guineas and peacocks. The old house at Dun Roman held many surprises. Frances Kennedy, mother of the current owner, recalls that Aunt Mary noticed that the curtains in windows in the attic looked worn out and torn, but couldn’t reach them because the only access was by climbing a ladder. After a stairway to the attic was built, she entered the attic and found that the “curtains” were actually painted on the window glass, giving the illusion of lacy draw-back curtains. The attic was the full size of the house except for a small room furnished with an old bed on the east side entered through a batten door. “It was likely a servant’s quarters,” explained Edith Kennedy. The room also had two batten doors with wooden hinges and latches that earned a special mention in the 1979 VHLC survey. During their ownership, the Millers added a wing on the southeast side of the house. The lower floor was one of the three kitchens in the house, to which Aunt Mary added a family dining room. The upper addition was used as a 16’ x 30’ closet, because there were no other closets in the house. It was believed that Oakwood had a ghost. William Bronaugh, who was likely a member of the Bronaugh clan

that lived at The Shelter, was killed in a hunting accident while visiting in 1844, and was buried in the old cemetery east of the main house. Sightings of the dead hunter’s spirit – riding in a cart, his ghostly groans accompanied by a howling hunting dog – were reported over the years. In addition to the farm, Aunt Mary operated the Stone House Inn, located next to the historic Stone House on the Manassas Battlefield. It was open during the warm months, and closed through the winter. “The inn had a huge dining room, and two screened-in porches on the front,” recalled Mrs. Kennedy. “Behind the inn were four small cabins, and beside it, an older house, where Aunt Mary could spend the night…it’s hard to believe that it all fit between the Stone House and Sudley Road.” With the creation of the Manassas Battlefield Park, the Stone House Inn – like all of the other privately-owned businesses and homes in the immediate area – was condemned by the federal government, and taken for the park. The inn was closed, and the building demolished in 1952. “Aunt Mary loved that restaurant, and hated to lose it,” recalled Mrs. Kennedy. “She went to Manassas, and bought the General Bee Restaurant,” near the intersection of Sudley Road and Route 28. The Millers had no children, and after Uncle Freddy’s health failed, they sold the restaurant, and ceased the farming operations at Dun Roman. “They finally retired from business,” said Frances Kennedy. Following Uncle Freddy’s death in 1969, Aunt Mary gave parts of the property to her close relatives, including her niece Frances Kennedy and her husband Tom; her nephew Joseph Miller; grand-nephew Steven, and grand-niece Edith Kennedy. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy built a new home on five acres south of the main house at Dun Roman, and moved there from Calverton in Fauquier County.

Oakwood House is Lost
Catastrophe struck early in the morning of Jan. 25, 1987, when the main house at Dun Roman was destroyed in a disastrous fire. Aunt Mary kept two dogs in the house, and was awakened by their barking. Going to investigate the noise, she found the house filling with fire and smoke, according to the Jan. 26, 1987 edition of the Potomac News. She could not reach the dogs, and they perished in the blaze. Aunt Mary escaped outside, suffering burns to her hands, scorched hair and smoke inhalation. She sought shelter from the freezing night in her car. A man who had been playing cards late into the night at a neighbor’s house nearby saw the blaze when he came outside. Shocked at what he saw, he returned and told his friend to call the county emergency dispatcher. The men came to the scene, and finding Aunt Mary in her car brought her to the Kennedy’s house, where she stayed briefly before being taken to a hospital for treatment. Before it was over, seven fire companies responded to the fire, remaining on the scene until after 9 a.m. Two firemen were also injured, suffering burns and frostbite, according to the Potomac News. Mrs. Kennedy has her own memories of what happened that terrible night 25 years ago, when she and Tom he were awakened by the neighbor who brought Aunt Mary to their house. She believes that the fire started when a brick from the chimney fell in, allowing heat from the woodstove to ignite the wood in an adjoining wall. “Aunt Mary had been asleep in a velvet chair in the family dining room (at the rear of the house), and when she opened the door to the main hall, the fire had already reached there,” she recalled. “She couldn’t save the dogs, and had to leave through the back door with nothing but her purse.” Returning home from the hospital with Aunt Mary, the Kennedys had to pass the still-smoldering ruins. “I leaned over to block her Little remains of the main house at Oakwood, which burned on Jan. 25, 1987. This chimney was once part of the family dining room addition on the rear of the house

view, but Aunt Mary told me to sit back. She wanted to see what was left of the house,” recalled Mrs. Kennedy. Her home and possessions gone, Aunt Mary lived with the Kennedys until her death in 1988. “Losing the house broke her heart,” said Mrs. Kennedy. “She had lost everything, her dogs… she would just walk the floor.” Edith, who shared a birthday (Dec. 29) with her great aunt and always had a special bond with her, is still saddened by the loss of the main house at Oakwood. If it were still standing, she would have inherited it. “I still dream about the house,” she admitted. “But there is always some reason that I can’t go inside. I can only see it. It’s heartbreaking.” But what Edith did with the land Aunt Mary left to her would have made her proud. Along with her achievements in higher education, Edith has taken her love for horses to new levels with the establishment of a unique, special horse farm at Oakwood. It is described by the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District (PWSWCD) as “…a public/private partnership that has created a model horse farm for the purpose of identifying and sharing land management practices that benefit horsekeepers and the environment.” According to the PWSWCD Web site, “Through seminars, farm tours and other on-site workshops, we seek to share information about the sensible and environmentally-sensitive horsekeeping practices” used at Oakwood Farm. Appointments for a tour can be made by calling the PWSWCD office at (571) 379-7514. Love of the land is clearly a Miller/Kennedy family value. Standing at the rear of the house overlooking the open, rolling fields that greet her, Mrs. Kennedy reflected on the past nearly 40 years she has lived at Oakwood. “When we built our house here, this was a cornfield,” she recalled. “It is nice to know that when I look out the window, what I see is ours.”

Improving Heart Care in Our Community
a team effort Cardiologists all agree that “time is muscle.” Quickly treating cardiac emergencies – like heart attacks – saves lives, reduces heart damage and improves quality of life. In Prince William County, patients experiencing heart attack symptoms have expert care close to home with Novant Health Prince William Medical Center’s 24/7 heart attack team and recent advances in technology.
Novant Health Prince William Medical Center recently expanded cardiac services, which will improve the immediacy of care for heart attack patients. Thanks to a community collaboration with local EMS, Novant Health implemented the LifeNet® system to allow paramedics to transmit a patient’s 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG) electronically from the field – whether it be an ambulance or the patient’s home – to the hospital and simultaneously to the interventional cardiologist-on-call in less than 10 seconds. “If we know a patient is going to need a procedure in the cardiac catheterization lab, there’s no need to spend valuable time in the emergency room,” said Melody Knapp, RN, director of heart and vascular services at Novant Health. “We now do a bypass method where the patient is taken directly from the field to the cardiac catheterization lab.
The EKG is also sent to the cardiologist on their smartphone, so when the patient arrives, the lab is prepared with staff and a cardiologist to begin opening the clogged artery.” With this extra layer of communication to the physician, patient care is expedited, Knapp continued. “This allows our providers to review and make clinical decisions in real time, in advance of the arrival of the patient,” she said. The LifeNet system is a partnership between Prince William County’s emergency rooms, local EMS agencies, Prince William County, and Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park who
worked together to install the modem technology in all the ambulances that transport patients to area medical facilities. “With this new system, we can activate the cardiac catheterization lab sooner, saving precious minutes for the patient,” said Knapp. Novant Health Prince William Medical Center’s cardiac catheterization lab opened in January 2011. It offers diagnostic heart catheterizations and coronary angioplasty (a procedure that opens a blocked artery), pacemaker insertions, permanent implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and electrophysiology ablation procedures.
“With this extra layer of communication to the physician, patient care is expedited.” 28

CASA NEEDS YOU
THE DIRT ON DIRT Augh! I want to write about Roses and Hellebores and so many other plants that I am excited about, but there is no use in encouraging you to invest in plants until I have finished talking about the soil that they will be planted in. Last month I encouraged applying a layer of good mulch for aesthetics, water retention, weed prevention and soil conditioning. This month I will dig into dirt some more. It is an old saying but very true – “Feed the soil, not the plant.” Give any plant a home in good soil and it will be happy. Yes, there are exceptions but rich, dark, loamy dirt is a good home for most growing things. This is because it is full of worms and humus, moisture and nutrients. The best soil is about 5 percent actively decaying organic matter. This means that there are soil microorganisms breaking down decaying plant material, feeding the nutrients into the soil moisture, which gets taken up by the roots and feeds the plant. It is truly one of nature’s wonderful cycles. The best thing you can do to incorporate decaying organic matter into your soil is with compost. Whether you make it yourself or have it delivered or buy it in bags it is the prime food for your garden. All of my vegetable scraps, dryer lint, eggshells, even the paper from my shredder go into my compost pile. If your HOA restricts compost piles and you drink coffee – dump the grounds into your garden beds. Coffee grounds are super organic and will benefit your garden much more than the landfill. Healthy soil holds more moisture, buffers extreme acid or alkaline conditions, increases aeration, binds heavy metals so they don’t enter the ecosystem and warms up faster in the spring. Add a layer of compost to your soil, cover it with a layer of good mulch and go get some plants.

Joe’sItalian Restaurant
The Gainesville and Haymarket communities have been served by one small Italian restaurant for thirtyone years; Joe’s Italian Restaurant continues to provide tasty dinners, loaded sub sandwiches and delicious pizzas. Within those years of service the landscape in Gainesville has transformed dramatically going from a rural byway to a bustling interstate exchange. During this process, Joe’s has kept their menu familiar, deliveries prompt, and maintained a friendly staff. Swing by Joe’s with your friends, or place a delivery order for your family. Either way, this restaurant will satisfy that Italian craving.
Looking for a sub or sandwich? They offer over 15 choices on the menu including cold or hot and 12” or 6” subs. The “Zep” Italian Hoagie is slammed with flavors including ham, Genoa salami and cheese. There are five Parmigiana choices available for order including Chicken, Eggplant, Meatball, Sausage and Veal. Each one is tasty. Their Gyro on a Pita is tender and juice topped with feta cheese, lettuce, onion, tomatoes and a special house sauce. Lastly, the Grilled Chicken Breast and the Cheeseburger Deluxe are stacked with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonnaise and a side of hot French fries.
Appetizers and salads are great to start any meal. Begin by trying their Stuffed Mushrooms packed with crab stuffing or their Cherry Bombs with cheese and ham tucked inside of hot cherry peppers. Their Mozzarella Sticks are a customer favorite along with the flavorful Bruschetta with diced tomatoes, freshly chopped basil and a touch of garlic and olive oil. Their fresh greens make for scrumptious salads like the Caprese with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The Caesar, Tossed and Chef’s salads are also notable.
Specializing in pizza, Joe’s style is round and thin topped with your favorite accents. Joe’s Special has been satisfying customers for years with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms. Go for a classic like the Cheese. They offer a Vegetarian sprinkled with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and olives. The White Pizza has fresh garlic and gooey mozzarella and the Hawaiian is sweet with ham and pineapple. In addition to pizza they offer baked turnovers like Calzones, Stromboli and a Sausage Roll.

Settle down for a hearty dinner with one of Joe’s pasta dishes. The Sausage & Green Peppers is spicy with Italian sausage, sautéed green peppers, onions and marinara sauce – served with pasta, fresh bread and soup or salad. Their baked dishes include Meat Lasagna, Manicotti and Stuffed Shells. Get a taste of the sea with the Shrimp Francese with lemon butter, white wine and mushrooms or the Seafood Combination with shrimp, calamari, scungilli and mussels cooked in a marinara sauce. Finish off your meal with a homemade treat like their cannoli or tiramisu. Joe’s Italian Restaurant is located at 14085 John Marshall Highway near the Flagship Carwash Center. They are open seven days a week starting Monday through Thursday 10:00am to 10:30pm, Friday through Saturday 10:00am to 11:00pm and Sunday 10:00am to 10:00pm. Stop by or give them a call at (703)754-2235 for carryout or delivery orders. For more information about their menu or their location please visit their website at www.joesitalianrestaurant.com.

The Reviews: “It’s Viognier the way God intended, or at least the French. It has not been manipulated. Stainless steel with a year on the lees. For us, the Viognier really shines when it is picked early when the acidity and minerality are preserved. With too much hang time, it ends up lush and flabby and we like it lean and lithe.” -- Jason Tesauro
