June is the start of the summer, which is always a time that is full of fun and anticipation. School is out, and some of you may be excited to indulge in a well-deserved vacation you planned earlier this year. This month is special to me because it brings back very fond memories. Summers at the beach; time spent with my father. So for all of you celebrating fathers this month consider this simple advice: enjoy each moment with your dad and family, as I know some of you—just like me—have lost your father (or maybe a special father figure) way too soon. I was blessed with a kind, hardworking, loyal, and generous father. He was always working on a project for our home, helping a neighbor, or spending time with our family. He instilled a strong work ethic in me. He also taught me to be kind to others, as well as to always be on time, no matter what. Jokes and laughter were abundant in our home. I will treasure those memories. After he passed at the young age of 53, I was fortunate to have other father figures step in along the way, like my my step-dad (who also passed) and my wonderful father-in-law. This year I

VonCanon General Store Small Town, Tall Tales Shelby Adams brings family legacy from the mountains of North Carolina to Virginia STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

T

he story behind VonCanon General Store in Vint Hill is more than a business owner pursuing a dream; it also is one of family support, carrying on a legacy throughout generations, and building relationships in the community. With the support of her parents Angee and Matt Adams, Shelby Adams has created her version of a general store inspired by what she envisions her greatgrandparents’ store looked and felt like so many years ago. The history of the space and small town feel of the location in Vint Hill could not be more perfect for this concept. The VonCanon legacy began way back in the town of Banner Elk, North Carolina. The area was first inhabited by Cherokee Indians who used the Elk River to hunt, and the first European settlers arrived in the 1820s. Martin Banner created the first permanent settlement; as the Banner family grew the area became known as Banner’s Elk and more early settlers began to inhabit the town, including

a family by the name of VonCanon. Although the town grew, throughout all the years much of it has remained the same primarily due to a mission to preserve much of the heritage and charm. Shelby’s great-grandfather is Charles VonCanon, a direct descendent of the founding members of the town. In a book titled Our Living Heritage by Michael Joslin, Charles details memories of his childhood sitting by the fireplace listening to his grandfather’s stories of hunting elk and the toll the Civil War took on the families. “A very outgoing and gregarious people person,” Charles was the mayor of Banner Elk for 28 years. His parents owned several businesses in the town, including the first Ford dealership

and a country store. It is Shelby’s fond memories of being told the stories about her great-grandparents adventures in the mountains of North Carolina that inspired her to create a similar type of atmosphere here in Virginia through a country store. On September 1, 2016, VonCanon General Store held its official ribbon cutting on the front porch of the building that has a long history as part of the Army base, and it’s been successful ever since. Visitors entering VonCanon will first be dazzled by the bins of candy in the front of the store, where many of the neighborhood children can be found taking their time making just the right choice. The recent addition of Dippin’ Dots has surely contributed to the store’s popularity.

HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE

}

Angee and Shelby say the kids have really formed a bond with the family by their daily visits. Other items available for purchase include cereal, coffee, creamer, tea, and a refrigerated section with eggs and milk. Shelby wants the community to be able to buy some of the simple necessities of life without traveling far. But there is so much more to see. Many of the items visitors delight in perusing at VonCanon’s are vintage-inspired decor items handmade by local artists, and unique pieces that can’t be found just anywhere. Handmade metal and wooden signs are displayed throughout the store, furniture is featured in the back section. Shelby has an eye for all things vintage and antique, and makes sure that the pieces will be treasured for years to come. Shelby and Angee are looking for more local crafters and artists to offer customers even more options of charming pieces to add to their homes. But perhaps even more important to Shelby is the relationship she is forming with the community and the ability to offer a ‘Mayberry’ feel for visitors. She truly wants VonCanon to reflect the stories she heard throughout her childhood as a place where people gathered, relaxed on the porch with a soda and a treat, and got to know one another. There is even talk of a few gentlemen forming a ‘Liar’s Club’ where they sit together to tell stories about when they were younger... kinda like the ‘fish tales’ where the size of the fish increases each time the story is told. VonCanon General Store is located at 7167 Lineweaver Road in Vint Hill. To learn more, call 540-935-2903 and follow the store on your social media accounts. Or better yet, take a drive to the quaint little area that is starting to feel like a small town in itself, grab a soda and some candy, peruse the merchandise, and take a seat on the porch. You just might hear a tale or two from days gone by. ❖

A

ppropriate, structured play is often an overlooked element of dog ownership. Play is vital for the human-canine bond, and is a great way to drain a dog’s excess energy. Additionally, regular play—which can be incorporated into your training routine—is a great way to improve engagement skills and helps your dog learn impulse control.

THE START OF PLAY Select a start cue such as “ready” or “lets play” to signal that a stimulating interaction is about to begin. This helps get the dog in a playful frame of mind, but also allows you to focus your dog’s attention. Make sure you are the one who chooses when play begins. When your dog is focusing on you, mark the behaviour by saying “yes” and begin a game of tug, fetch, chase, or wrestle.

NAME THE GAMES

KNOW YOUR TOYS

Make sure to use verbal cues to signal your exact play intentions. Use “tug” to get the dog to pull on toys, “fetch” for retrieval, and “seek” to find hidden items. Many owners love to exclaim “I’m gonna get ya” before wrestling or playing chase. Using verbal cues helps the dog learn how to act in a play situation and strengthens behaviors.

There are loads of different toys on the market, most of which are completely useless. Go through your dog’s collection and ask yourself “what is the purpose?” of each toy. Some are meant for fetch, some for tug, some dispense rewards. Others are simply there because they appeal to our human senses. If the toy does not have a specific purpose for your dog, get rid of it. Otherwise you may be encouraging destructive chewing habits. Instead of allowing your dog to shred items, consider investing in some safe chew toys to keep their mouths occupied.

ROTATE TOYS AND ACTIVITIES Toys can become novel to your dog. Play games and give access to some toys, and rotate different ones every few days to keep interactions interesting and engaging. Rate your dog’s favorite toys in order of preference and consider incorporating play as part of your training routine.

SETTLING DOWN AFTER GAMES It is also important to signal to the dog when playtime is over. Many dogs become hyper-stimulated during play, leading to playful biting, jumping, and nuisance barking, and need to learn how to calm down to prevent these behaviours from escalating. When play is over, simply say “game over” or “all done” while removing toys. Disengage with your dog, or leave the room (for super excitable dogs) to signal that play is over. Simply use the cue “chill out,” “settle,” or “calm down,” and stop moving: stand still and fold your arms. Your dog will soon lose interest with the lack of animation. In the exact moment your dog switches from excited to calm (they may stand still, change their breathing pattern, sit, lay down, or shake off) use your verbal “yes” marker and reward him. ❖

Coaching THE PROCESS OF FITNESS BY COLBY SCHRECKENGOST

H

ave you heard the phrase “you’ve gotta learn to love the process?” I love this mindset and encourage adult clients as well as athletes to develop it. But in reality it’s easier said than done. In today’s world of immediacy (texting, emailing, responding, and overall social media urgency) our brains are now wired for instantaneous results. But when it comes to improving our fitness and health, the changes never happen as quickly as we’d like. I was recently asked “who is your typical adult fitness client?” It was a pretty easy question to answer. Typically adult fitness participants are between the ages of 30 and 80, and most are looking for weight loss; the more senior clients are thinking more in terms of longevity. Most individuals are interested in looking and feeling better. And most have no idea how long it takes, the consistency involved, or the amount of effort required to improve physically. Many of these individuals have previously had small and unsustainable results with other fitness attempts, whether in a gym or a home program.

16

WHAT IS IMPORTANT? COACHING. Consider a selecting a place that will help you attain the greatest fitness possible per dollar and hour spent. Constantly improving exercise programs and nutritional education has always been a crucial part of the fitness process. Facilities need to stay up to date on the latest fitness research and adjust your training programs accordingly. A professional trainer can assist you with all of this. Find a place, like ours, that will focus on client results, not membership sales. The key to how fitness is accomplished is simple: a good coach. A coach with a positive attitude, proper technique, who relies on effective, evidence-based programs is what you need to look for. The coach should also emphasize pre-workout preparation and post-exercise recovery. Even proper meal preparation and better nutritional strategies are important when coaching individuals to achieve their goals. It is important that the coach also provide suggestions on

general lifestyle improvement and reinforces the overall positive effect that exercise has on your body, both physically and emotionally. The coach should also help you with fostering a positive camaraderie among other clients. Good support is essential. These are all things that are missing in a do-it-at-home approach with youtube workouts and healthy cookbooks. THE BENEFITS OF COACHING. Regardless of what fitness level you are aiming to achieve, true fitness is about consistently working out three to six times per week and committing to making better choices at every opportunity. Understanding intrinsically WHY you want to do this and determining what will motivate you on the tough days are both crucial. Because it’s NOT going to be easy. Anything worth having never is. You must also adopt healthier nutritional strategies and change your lifestyle. That’s what it’s all about. Don’t just learn a new workout or count on a 21day quick-fix routine—it’s not enough. You need a coach to teach you how to train, to master the correct training techniques and to enjoy the process of your fitness routine. If you’re not sure where to begin, consider all of the ways a professional can help you embrace the process.

arm days mixed with cool vacations are a perfect recipe for spending more time outside. Whether you’re camping in the woods, hiking in an exotic locale or simply exploring close to home, a few tips can ensure you stay safe while enjoying the wilderness. “Having a first-aid kit available and stocked with essentials is critical,” said Dr. Steven Tang of Novant Health UVA Health System Bristow Run Family Medicine. He recommended standard kits that include Band-Aids and antibacterial ointments but suggested some additions.

{ JUNE 2017 |

“Tweezers to remove splinters are always useful in the summer months,” he said. “I’d also include a pain-relief spray such as a lidocaine spray with aloe for use after burns—whether it’s a sunburn or an accidental sparkler burn from fireworks.” Make sure all products and medications have not expired, he added.

Other Tips

Be practical about poison ivy and poison oak. “When to seek medical attention is really a matter of the extent to which you have a poison ivy or poison oak rash,” Tang said. “If your rash is extensive to the point that applying cream over the area isn’t practical—if it’s all over or in multiple

places—your doctor can prescribe an oral treatment of steroids which will dry things up more quickly.” He reminded parents to be especially mindful that exposure to the oils from the plants doesn’t have to entail being outside or around offending plants. “Pets can easily transfer oil from poison oak and poison ivy from their fur to children, and we see a lot of rashes on kids that way,” Tang said. Beware of mosquitoes and ticks. “Everyone is worried about tick- and mosquito-borne illnesses,” Tang said. “It’s important to make sure you have enough DEET protection to repel them.” If you are bitten, any reaction up to a quarter or half dollar size is a localized reaction that doesn’t require medical care, Tang said. “If the border of your bite reaction starts to creep beyond that, you should see a doctor.” He recommended using a buddy system to check family members for ticks and other insects after time spent outdoors. “If you are bitten by a tick, be mindful of the secondary features of Lyme disease, such as flu-like symptoms, fevers and knee pain. Make sure you know what to look for,” Tang said. Mosquitos are no joke either. Mosquitos can carry West Nile Virus, and a bite from an infected mosquito can cause someone to become seriously ill or, in rare instances, may be fatal. Use insect repellant and clothing to protect against mosquito bites.

Be wary of stings that mean something more. “It can be hard to tell initially if the reaction you’re experiencing from an insect sting or bite is normal,” Tang said. “Bee, wasp, yellow jacket, hornet, and fire ant stings most often trigger allergies.” Signs of an anaphylactic reaction to a sting include: • Difficulty breathing • Hives that spread beyond the sting • Swelling of the face, throat or mouth • Wheezing or difficulty swallowing • Restlessness and anxiety • Rapid pulse • Dizziness or a sharp drop in blood pressure Any reactions of this nature require emergency medical treatment as soon as possible. Carry an epinephrine auto injector (sold under brand names such as EpiPen) if you or a family member has a history of severe allergic reactions to insect bites or stings. If stung by a bee, wasp, or hornet, wash the site with soap and water. Remove the stinger with gauze or by scraping a fingernail over the area—never squeeze or use tweezers, according to the CDC. Apply ice to reduce swelling, and avoid scratching which may increase swelling, itching, and the risk of infection. If bitten by fire ants, rub the ants off briskly, consider taking an antihistamine and monitor for signs of anaphylaxis. Seek medical care for any snakebite. ❖

Haymarket’s Military Sacrifices

Our soldiers fought for their town in the Civil War; today, the town fights for its soldiers BY DANIELLE KIJEWSKI

he local men and women who have served our country in the military have valuable information to share and history to document that is important for future generations to observe and understand. Where scholarship and records are lacking, these soldiers and their stories are the lights that show us life as it was, our town as it was, throughout its history. In spite of Haymarket’s small size, many of its young people have left to serve as members of our country’s armed forces. Some photos remain, but many other details have been lost through the years. Haymarket resident William Randolph “Ran” Smith’s journal, written from a southward

campaign by the Confederate Infantry during the Civil War, offers just such a glimpse into Haymarket’s past that would otherwise be lost to history. Ran Smith served as a member of the Prince William Rifles, Company F, of the 17th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Established in the Town of Haymarket on November 26, 1859, the company’s 52 men answered the Confederacy’s call to arms after Virginia seceded from the Union in April of 1861. The campaign took him from Centreville through Warrenton and then through and around the Confederate capital of Richmond. Entries from his diary share details of difficulties common

to many wars, but his thoughts, as shown in the following excerpts, were constantly with his family and friends back in Haymarket. He valued their safety and security more than his own life, and this conviction gave him strength. March 23rd, 1862 The people of Culpeper and Orange are not so kind or generous by half as those of Fauquier and Rappahannock. […]This may not be true of the inhabitants in general but is our experience. Sometimes we would go to find grand looking farmhouses and apply for a meal but a servant would come out and tell us they had nothing, which we knew was not true. These are the people for whom we peril our lives and undergo hardships and privations. April 4th, 1862 Mr. Hulfish arrived in camp this afternoon from Haymarket; how the boys clustered around to hear the news from home. He returns tomorrow and everyone is busy writing letters home for they do not know, but this may be the last chance for a long time. April 5, 1862 We were quite surprised on returning in the afternoon to hear that Mr. Hulfish had been arrested by order of Gen. Hill (our Brigadier). HAYMARKET HERO

It seems that someone had reported that he was a spy and had come to camp to gather information, for the benefit of our enemies. Lieut. Carter got him off however toward night, and he is going to make an early start in the morning, for home. I don’t reckon he will visit our camp again soon. I hope he will arrive safe at home with our letters. Mr. Hulfish, a treasured visitor to Ran’s camp with welcome news from home, did reach Haymarket in safety, though his

Charles Melton house was one of those burned by Union troops in November of that same year. William Randolph Smith never saw his home again, nor was he returned to it in death; he was buried on the field where he fell in the Battle of Glendale, near Richmond. Other sons of the town who never returned home from war include Harry Welsh, who was killed as he parachuted into France during the Second World War, and Roger Mabe, who gave his life in the Vietnam conflict. A friend from Ran's company, Corporal Frederick Ebhardt, found Ran’s diary amongst his things. Ebhardt and Corporal George Pickett of the same company kept the diary safe through the remainder of the war. These two young men, both residents of Haymarket, had enlisted on the same day. Though they were themselves wounded later in the war, they brought it back—intact—to Haymarket where it was presented to Ran’s family.

While on foot patrol, a blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) left him critically wounded and without his legs. After a mountaintop helicopter evacuation, Sergeant Dandrea was treated at Camp Bastion/ Leatherneck in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in England and Germany, and then at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda. The local 84 Lumber partnered with Homes for Our Troops and other local businesses to build a new home in Haymarket for Sergeant Dandrea and his family. Materials and labor were all donated, a successful fundraiser was held to support Homes for Our Troops, and the home was provided to the Dandreas free of charge in honor of his extraordinary sacrifice. Then, as now, Haymarket watches over its men and women in arms who, in turn, watch over their country. ❖

Behaviors that scare your couples therapist BY ERICA TURNER

I

t may surprise you to hear that infidelity is not necessarily the issue that worries couple therapists the most. In fact, while I recognize the emotional devastation and pain that infidelity causes, unless there is a history of habitual indiscretion, cheating on its own rarely makes me worried a relationship will not survive the long haul. Below I talk about three relationship warning signs that actually give me (and my fellow couple therapist friends) more cause for concern.

1.

You Don’t Spend Time Together

This is a common issue we see with couples, but I think it’s important to highlight because it has the power to very slowly undermine your marriage and your connection to your partner. Frankly, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of couples making time for each other. Typically, this is more of a problem we see with couples who are also parents, but it can creep up in relationships where one or both people work an odd schedule, or there is some other practical or logistical block. Regardless of the cause, you should think about time spent together as nurturing your marriage. When you don’t spend time together, you’re essentially starving your relationship.

WHAT TO DO Be thoughtful about creating opportunities to hang out or do things together. It doesn’t have to be fancy—take twenty minutes each day to chat, cuddle on the couch, or take a walk around the neighborhood. If your children are six or older, institute a rule that designates periods daily, or at least a few times a week, when mommy and daddy are not to be bothered. In the long term, consider taking a weekend or vacation each year without your children or other family members. Whatever you have to do, make sure you make space and time for each other and your relationship, in both small and large ways.

2.

Those Ugly Horsemen: Contempt and Criticism I think one of the most painful things we see in couples therapy are partners who are openly mean to, or dismissive of, one another. Speaking cruely or disrespectfully to a spouse is more damaging than yelling, or even cheating, and is an important warning sign in a relationship. This is very different from making petty or childish statements during a fight. These are couples for whom even seemingly calm interactions are laced with barbs and subtle assaults. And when they do fight, it’s no holds barred, with no regard to how words will emotionally impact an individual. Sometimes, there is even a drive to purposely hurt the other person.

3.

WHAT TO DO If you notice that you and/or your partner have gotten into this hostile and hurtful pattern with one another, try to determine when these behaviors started and what it would take to heal your own pain. Give careful thought to what may be fueling your anger and hurt. Ask yourself if you still respect and value your partner for who they are, and if you don’t, why? Also, ask yourself if you would be willing to work on emotionally trusting this person again. While it may be unimaginable to expose your vulnerability at this point, both of you will need to be willing to expose your tender sides for the relationship to have a chance to heal. Also, strongly consider getting help from a couples therapist or other trusted person; it can be particularly difficult to escape this damaging cycle.

Mutual Withdrawal Mutual Withdrawal

I think, when people imagine couples therapy, they often picture two people shouting at each other while the counselor tries to play referee. That’s why marriage therapy is so hard, right? All the screaming, fussing, and crying? But ask any couples therapist, and they will say they prefer two people screaming at each other versus two silent souls sitting on opposite sides of the couch. Even though it can be tricky to deal with dueling partners, when couples argue you know that at least they still care on some level. Either their partner still means enough to them or they still have hope that things could be better, which is why

they continue to fight. But withdrawn couples are often worn down from fighting, from not having their needs met, and from not feeling heard in the relationship. These individuals often have little faith or confidence that their relationship can improve.

WHAT TO DO If you sense you have started to feel a sense of hopelessness around your marriage or relationship, it may be time to ask yourself some difficult questions. Am I willing to

do the work to make this relationship better? Do I honestly accept things the way they are and can I continue living like this? Do I believe it’s possible to get my needs met within this relationship? Do I believe it’s possible to be and express my authentic self with this person? Essentially, you need to assess whatever hope you have left and determine if you are willing to try to make your relationship better. If you sense that your partner has given up, then it’s time to have an honest conversation with them about how they feel about your relationship. Determine if they are willing to make the effort to get back on track. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security if your partner has stopped fighting with you—this can sometimes mean they have given up. Instead, talk about what is and isn’t working in your partnership.

To be clear, I am not saying that the presence of any of the three relationship warning signs outlined above mean a relationship is over, or that couples cannot recover. But these are characteristics I’ve seen that reflect a relationship that is struggling in a significant way. If you notice any of these behaviors in your relationship, the worst thing you can do is to do nothing. Couples can go on in these circumstances, often for years, in this no man’s land where there is limited connection, fun, and emotional trust. They also often feel trapped, resentful, or, in more advanced cases, like they’re dying internally. Take action to address these concerns before they get worse.❖

It’s BBQ Time! What to consider when purchasing a new barbeque

Cabinet Trends A look at the “in” cabinet trends for 2017

It’s Summer BBQ Season What to consider when purchasing a grill

BY DEBBIE EISELE

any people are passionate about their barbeque recipes and methods, and many get into a friendly, informal competition with neighbors and family involving secret ingredients and procedures. Either way, summer is the time to enjoy the outdoors and some wonderful food. Whether you are preparing a simple meal for a small group, or for a large gathering, food off the grill is a staple for summer get-togethers. This season, you may be looking to purchase a grill. Maybe you need an upgrade, or yours was blown away and damaged in a storm and a replacement is needed. Or maybe you just want to “wow” your friends and family. No matter your reason for seeking a new grill, it is important to think about what you need and want in terms of a grill’s functionality, durability, longevity, available accessories, and even aesthetics. BBQ gurus know there are so many options for grilling, and each will insist their own personal preference is the best.

{ JUNE 2017 |

If you’re looking to buy one to start off your summer, the possibilities can be endless. With this in mind, we turned to Kent Rankin from Rankin’s True Value. He has years of experience helping customers with questions on the best options to meet their needs and budget. He outlined several key considerations for us to share with you.

Brands

Kent noted that there are several popular brands and all offer different price points and functionalities, but there is a perfect grill out there for everyone. Some good brands include Weber, The Big Green Egg, Char Broil, Napoleon, and Primo.

Type of Grill

If a brand wasn’t enough of a decision to make, there is more to consider. Gas, electric, infrared, and charcoal are the options you may select from. When making the selection that is right for you, Kent said, consider how much time it will take for your grill to be ready to cook. “Electric and gas grills start fast

and are quickly ready to use. Charcoal may take approximately five minutes (if you use a chimney starter), while the ceramics may take a total of 20 to 30 minutes of warm-up time before they are ready to use.” To determine what is best for you, Kent suggested you consider your environment: “People in apartments or condos may be limited to electric, due to restrictions in their community.” For those who live in their own home, he said that it depends more on how it will be used. Will it be used occasionally or on a regular basis? How many people will you be cooking for at one time? Will you be slow-cooking or smoking your meats, or mostly flipping burgers, hot dogs, and chicken? All of these are important questions to ask yourself when determining the best grill for you. If you are a fan of smoked meat, which requires long, slow cooking, there are steel and ceramic options for you. It is important for slow cooking lovers to note that maintaining heat is crucial to the creation of a good meal. If you need to open the grill to add more charcoal during the cook time, it could impact your end results. “A steel smoker will only hold the desired heat consistently for a few hours before it will need more charcoal, Kent explained. Steel vessels (not the professional grade) may make “maintaining a constant temperature almost impossible, and they cannot really be used in the winter as the outside temperatures will not allow the grill to reach the internal temperature that is needed.” If you are set on a steel smoker, you may need to consider spending the money on a competitive smoker the professionals use.” Kent also noted that when using steel smokers, “Many of these have a water pan, so you can add moisture. The steel variety loses moisture which can dry out meat.” Ceramic smokers “hold the heat better (up to 12-plus hours, eliminating the need to open it to add charcoal every few hours), and can be used in the winter. Also, the ceramic smokers retain moisture better than steel, without the use of a water pan.” Kent was quick to note that Weber did just come out with an insulated steel smoker (double wall steel) which improves the efficiency of the steel version. “It is more expensive than the Green Egg, and this is the first year it is available for purchase.” But if you are set on steel, this may be another option for you.

Budget

If you have a limited budget, there are plenty of options available. A smaller Weber charcoal grill can be purchased for around $80 and a gas grill can go for around $399. Of course, if your budget falls into the “sky’s the limit” category, the options may range into the thousands of dollars for a model with all the bells and whistles for the professional barbecue enthusiast. There are even models that offer it all in one product: gas, charcoal, smoker, and grill combined, which can serve as an complete outdoor kitchen.

Accessories

What is a grill purchase without the benefits of a few add-ons? Kent does recommend a few must-have accessories: “they are worth the investment.” These include a meat thermometer, a cover to protect your purchase, and a good brush or pad to clean your grill with.w If you wish to add other accessories now or in the future, there is a plethora of options. For the rib lovers, there are a variety of rib racks available. Pizza lovers can rejoice knowing there are pizza stones for grills. For those that just enjoy a good roasted chicken or turkey, there are turkey roasters and beer can chicken racks. The list of accessories available is “endless,” according to Kent. Certain brands like Weber and the Big Green Egg have very specialized accessories for the BBQ guru and technology fans. For instance, Kent noted that the Big Green Egg offers the Flame Boss (several models available), an alldigital version with a fan which is used in conjunction with your smart phone. It can monitor the internal temperature of the meat and of the grill. Weber offers a comparable product, known as the iGrill. This may even be a great Father’s Day gift this year. Many locally-owned and chain stores offer a variety of options for you to chose from, but now you are armed with information to help you with your selection process. Enjoy the tasty summer BBQs and the fun you have along the way. Painted Cabinets Are Still On Top A look at the “in” cabinet trends for 2017

Cabinet color trends that last

his year at the 2017 International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida, orange and matte black were announced as the “Color Trend for 2017.” I know this is hard to believe! Stop what you’re doing and look around the space you are in right now, do you see any orange? If you don’t yet, you will soon. Trendsetters are utilizing orange and black all over the kitchen, from cabinets to grout, even on upholstery and exterior siding. Color is always coming and going; when gray was announced as the color trend of 2002 we were all of the opinion that this would be a short-lived trend. Fifteen years later, gray is still popular and projected to become a neutral. Grays are warming into what is now referred to as “griege,” or gray-

Whether renovating or building a new home, white painted cabinetry is still the number one choice of homeowners. One of the most frequently asked questions I hear is: “Are white cabinets going out of style?” My answer is, no, definitely not. White painted cabinets will always will be in style. Almost everyone loves a crisp, clean, white kitchen. If your cabinets are in good shape and don’t need replacing, but could benefit from an updated look, you might consider painting them. Whether you decided this is a project you would like to take on yourself or hire a professional, painting your existing cabinetry is the most budget-friendly option. Visit your local paint professionals to find out the best paint for your project, or to find a painter. While you’re painting those cabinets, make sure

you change out the decorative hardware (knobs and pulls); nothing says 1982 like a shiny brass knob. I am, however, noticing a resurgence of bold colors on the kitchen island, accenting the white. In most kitchens, the island is not only functional, it is a focal point. Islands are the place where a homeowner can express creativity and show a hint of their hidden personality. Colors such as bold greens and vivid blues, or a dark stained wood, are making the island appear more like a custom piece of furniture.

Cabinets and kitchen design Another consideration is the style of the cabinet to select. No matter what you call it, the Shaker, Mission, or Prairie-style door is by far the most popular one. The reason is that it is a simple design, it’s easy to clean, and you can add character by using different styles of decorative hardware. A cup pull gives the shaker door a country feel; a bar

pull will feel more modern. And that is the secret to the Shaker door’s popularity—its versatility. The latest trends continue to indicate wood as the preference, however, several of the cabinet manufacturers are introducing metal in their new lines. The old-fashioned metal, favored in the 1950s, may soon reappear in a more modern style in the near future. Cabinets that consist of all drawers are very popular right now, especially when you include inserts. Clients are storing dishes, pots and pans, and glasses in the drawers. Having these everyday items located below the counter top also helps with accessibility for younger children or anyone who may have limited mobility. Whether you have the drawer by itself or in combination with a roll out tray, opening it requires fewer motions than an upper cabinet, making it very useful for the elderly. Full extension drawer glides with soft-close are truly the way to go. Another trend I see is making the kitchen “multi-functional.” Most of our clients are renovating to open the kitchen up to the rest of the home. They want the cook to be a part of the family action and not separated or relegated to the “scullery.” Cooking has also become a group activity for family members, as well as entertaining. At a party, everyone always ends up in the kitchen, right? Now more than ever, it is not the size of the kitchen that matters as much as its functionality. The utilization of every possible space available will provide an enhanced room and experience. Working with a professional can help you with the design of your kitchen and they can provide extremely helpful suggestions to maximize your space and create a more efficient design.

Cabinet hardware options Stainless or brushed nickel are still the most popular materials for cabinet hardware. Emerging as one of the newest offerings is brushed bronze or French gold. Oil Rubbed Bronze is still favored, but is not as readily available as it used to be; most vendors are replacing that finish a with matte black option. Additionally, if you are interested in a more modern look, you may opt for no handles or knobs at all. Some cabinet manufacturers are now incorporating a “touchto-open” technology which is very popular on wastebasket cabinets. If you know someone who has recently completed a kitchen renovation, ask them for a referral. Most design professionals will meet with you in their showroom at no charge for the first consultation. All you need to do is take a few measurements, do some research on appliances, and make time in your schedule to sit down and chat about your project. It will be time well spent. ❖

HOME UPGRADES WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE BIGGEST RETURN? BY BRYAN GARCIA

here are lots of ways to improve your home and increase its value when it’s time to sell. However, before you launch into renovations—and the costs associated with them—you should first ask yourself why you want to upgrade. Here are three questions to consider. Do you want to upgrade

Project cost recoup can depend on materials and labor. Labor-intensive jobs hold less value, while those based mostly on materials, like a front door,

The cost in the first scenario above may not be recouped fully in home sale price, but could provide long-term savings and benefits to your lifestyle while you live there. Do you want to upgrade because you are ready to sell and there are things in your home in obvious need of repair or updating? Or, are you ready to sell and hoping some upgrades will be an investment that will bring you more value in sale price? I will start by saying, regardless of which scenario applies to you, there are very few home upgrades that will bring 100 percent return on your investment. According to the 2017 Cost vs. Value Report, published by Remodeling Magazine, the resale value compared to the job cost for midrange and upscale home projects has a cost recoup (estimated percentage of

Upgrades that improve energy efficiency in the home will bring more value in colder states, while a backup generator may be a deal-winner in coastal states prone to hurricanes. According to the Remodeling report, the only projects that will bring a 100 percent return or more to the DC Metro area are front door replacement, garage door replacement, and attic insulation (158 percent). A major kitchen remodel may yield 58 percent and a bathroom remodel 60 percent. That said, it doesn’t mean home remodeling projects won’t bring value to your

add joy and value to your daily routine while an appliance, window, or utility upgrade can save on energy costs. Indoor and outdoor living space, like a patio/deck or recreation/theater room can provide endless hours of entertainment and save on going out. An in-law suite or bedroom addition can save on rent elsewhere. All of these upgrades will still add value to your home when it is time to sell. Updating things in need of repair like roofs or siding, or remodeling dated kitchens and baths may not bring full return either, but in some cases, NOT doing them could hurt the sale of your home, especially if comparable homes have these features already updated. If your home sits on the market for a while due to competition,

you may end up selling for less than you hoped. So, how do you know what upgrades are best for your home, and in the end will provide the biggest bang for your buck? National and regional statistics vary, but here in the Haymarket area, based on my experience as a REALTOR®, the homes that seem to generate the most interest and sell the fastest at or near asking price are the ones with updated kitchens, updated bathrooms and extravagant outdoor/indoor living spaces. These homes will compare favorably to those with dated kitchens and baths, which translates to added expense for buyers when

looking at resale homes. The upgrades in kitchens that seem to impress buyers the most are new appliances, granite or solidsurface counters, tile backsplashes, and trendy light fixtures. The color and style of cabinets really depends on buyer preference, so updating to the latest cabinet trend just to sell isn’t always necessary. It’s the same with bathrooms. Upgraded vanity surfaces, new fixtures, and updated lighting go a long way and can be enough if the existing shower, tile, and flooring is in good condition. A seamless glass shower door upgrade is also an impressive upgrade, but expensive. Many of the buyers I work

with in this area really seem to want the indoor and/or outdoor recreation wow factor. They look for basements that are not only finished but provide entertainment options like bars, home theater, and recreation rooms. Outdoor living space with decking and patio, builtin fire pits, and grill stations will bring buyers back for a second look. All of these can be costly, so do your research on materials and design, get a few quotes, and be sure you will enjoy the upgrades while you are in the home. If you are planning to sell, talk to a REALTOR® about recent home sales near you and the comparable features. A knowledgeable

REALTOR® can give you a good idea of what renovations are worth it, and which ones may not be necessary to sell. Aside from actual updates and renovations, the most important thing you can do to add value to your home when you are ready to sell—especially if budget is a concern—is to prepare it properly. This may mean renting a temporary storage unit to declutter: remove excess furniture, knick knacks, and overflowing closet and garage items. Freshen up rooms with paint, clean carpets, and make sure all bathroom tile is free of mildew. Lower cost upgrades like light fixtures, throw rugs, decorative pillows and shower curtains/towels go a long way too. ❖

h, summer! It’s time for flip-flops, popsicles, lazy days at the pool, and a break from school. It’s also time for summer reading at your public library. We’re talking prizes for reading, fun weekly challenges, and tons of events and activities all summer long. And it’s all free, of course! Before we get into the details, let’s talk about why summer reading is so important to school-age students. Maybe you’ve heard of the “summer slide”? It’s the learning loss that happens during the summer when

kids and teens don’t read or participate in educational activities. But don’t worry, because public library summer reading programs help combat summer slide. Research shows that children who are engaged in summer reading programs perform better academically when they return to school in the fall1. And the best part is that your kids and young adults get a quality experience at no cost. The library’s Explore Summer Reading program is all about celebrating the joy of reading for fun by providing incentives along the way. The program provides many educational and entertaining experiences that help foster a lifetime love of books and libraries. The program starts June 19 for all ages—infants through adults—at all library locations. Kids and young adults may also register online at www.pwcgov.org/ summerreading. And if you are concerned about that

lifelong animal lover, Debbie Gretz believes “no living thing should live in fear or in pain.” She found herself drawn to animals in need: those with medical issues or special needs, as well as those suffering from abuse. Debbie and her husband Bob began fostering dogs at their home, starting a with a pug but quickly adding two or three more. Debbie says that she and Bob came to realize the issue wasn’t really how many dogs they could handle; it was more about how many were in need. “When you are committed to rescue, what is easy for you is never part of the equation; it is more like, ‘okay, how can we make this work?’” Over the course of 13 years, the Gretzes fostered many dogs. But it was when they realized how many of the senior dogs needed a permanent home to retire to rather than interim care that they decided their passion was worthy of becoming more. In April 2016, Debbie and Bob officially opened Gray Face Acres, a nonprofit rescue and retreat for senior dogs, on their secluded 10-acre property in Haymarket. The organization is a registered 501 (c) 3, run only by volunteers, and entirely funded by Debbie and Bob with contributions from generous donors. “To put it

Debbie and Bob Gretz feel a common desire to help dogs: it “drives us and ties us together.” Their home is filled with dog beds and sofas, not cages.

simply, we are very passionate about what we do,” explains Debbie. If not for people like the Gretzes, many senior dogs would be left in shelters to live out their last days alone. For dogs with medical issues or advanced in age the odds of being adopted are slim to none, says Debbie. At Gray Face Acres, the dogs from local shelters are given the love and comfort of a home, along with help for their individual needs. From Gray Face Acres, some dogs are adopted into loving families who also have a heart for the senior and medically fragile animals. “The old ones really tug at my heart, and at the same time really make me smile,” says Debbie of these sweet companions who fill her home. Through their work, the Gretz’ have formed relationships with shelters who will call

Gray Face Acres when a senior dog finds his or her way into the shelter. Some of these dogs have had a home all their lives, but the owners may have passed away and there was no one else to take the animal in. The dogs are scared and confused after being taken from the only home they’ve ever known. “We bring them here, where they are not placed in cages but are allowed to be part of the family. Our family room is filled with dog beds and sofas and there can be anywhere from five to fifteen little seniors in residence who are safe and and happy, until we find them a new home.” But the work is not for the faint of heart. Some dogs who come to Gray Face Acres are too elderly, and do not live long enough to be adopted. But with Debbie and Bob, they are able to cross over the “rainbow bridge” with

someone loving by their side when their time comes. Providing a voice and a calm, safe environment for these dogs is what Gray Face Acres is all about. But what Debbie and Bob do for these dogs gives back to this inspiring couple tenfold. “This is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” Debbie says of the nonprofit. Being able to take a dog who is at risk of being euthanized at a shelter and place them in a home where they are cared for, comforted, and loved means that the mission of Gray Face Acres is being fulfilled. “Each and every one of the dogs that come through here has added to our lives, has made us appreciate what a blessing it is to have a safe, warm place to call home. Their resilience and capacity to love is amazing.” For those who share a compassionate heart for senior dogs, there are many ways to become involved with Gray Face Acres. The organization is in need of people to help transport dogs from shelters, assist with fundraising efforts, and provide administrative support. Additionally, they need foster and adoptive families, and monthly donations for medical and vet care. To learn more about the organization, go to www.grayfaceacres.org or follow them on facebook to see the latest updates. ❖

Are you from this area and what do you like about our town? Both Ed and I moved to Northern Virginia from New York but have been in the Washington DC area for so long this area is now home for us. We live in Dominion Valley, and although we are not golfers we love all the green space and the view of the mountains.

Priscilla Myerson Myerson & Myerson, CPA’s 5618 Swift Creek Court, Haymarket 703-743-1040 | mandmcpas.com

When and why did you decide to start your own company? Myerson & Myerson, CPA’s (M&M) began as a part-time enterprise. Both Ed, my husband, and I had full-time jobs. In the mid-1980s, I commuted to D.C. with several senior executive service IRS employees. They were in the IRS’s computer operations and asked if I would do their taxes. Over the next few years, Ed & I grew the part-time practice. Fast forward a few years, I decided to begin operating our business full time. We were successful and eventually opened an office in Arlington.

How does your business serve the local community? We assist small to mid-sized businesses to get to where they want to be. While we do tax returns and financial statements, we also work to help our clients understand what the numbers are telling them and how to improve their results. We help individuals who have not filed tax returns for numerous years, and those whose

returns have been successfully challenged by taxing authorities.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. We have been able, on a number of occasions, to assist taxpayers who are struggling financially and who owe the IRS and/or Virginia a lot of money; to work out an agreement with which they can live with. In the best case, the IRS moves the liability to uncollectable status and while the liability doesn’t go away, the IRS ceases collection efforts and only communicates with the taxpayer once a year to determine if their financial situation has changed.

Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? We have acquired several clients through HGBA. The organization is a very relaxed and collegial environment in

which to meet and talk with other business persons in the Haymarket Gainesville area. It is an opportunity to get to know people, and to put a face, personality and business name on the business services offered.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1.

2.

3.

Pay your bills from the correct accounts. Keep separate business and personal credit cards and bank accounts. Remember your business isn’t you, it is a separate entity. Don’t wait until year end to put your books together. Record business income and expenses when they happen. If it isn’t recorded, you can’t deduct it or manage it. File your taxes timely, even if you can’t pay. You can always work out a payment plan, but you don’t need to add additional penalties and interest.

Spring is spectacular. The flowering trees make it a joy to be outside.

What are some hobbies you enjoy? Both Ed and I like to cook and experiment with new recipes. We enjoy visiting ethnic restaurants. We both love opera and very much enjoy the Met in HD.

Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? Helping Haitian Angels. The organization is dedicated to helping children, who would otherwise become street children, to have happy and healthy childhoods. They also provide education, so when the children are grown they will be able to provide for themselves.

What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I worked overseas for the U.S. government for 13 years, serving in Libya, Nigeria, and Germany.

She and one of the owners, Michelle DeWitt, treated me like we had been friends for years while they took me on a tour of the facility and introduced me to the crew. Everyone seemed to be in motion and yet still

stopped what they were doing to answer any questions I had, or encourage me to sample a few of the delicious brews that head brewer Bobby Burris had been working on. Each serving tank houses a different beer, crafted with unique flavors. I enjoyed each one and had a hard time picking a favorite, which is unusual for me. The MAC Imperial Red IPA, BRB Blonde Ale, BRX Belgian Dubbel, and CAP Porter are on the opening lineup but new brews will be available in the future. The huge, shiny tanks lined up along one wall in the facility appear more like works of art than functioning equipment. With it all visible from the expansive interior seating area, the result is a welcoming area for visitors to ask questions and learn about the process while enjoying the atmosphere. Michelle and Bill DeWitt have owned the Farm at Broad Run since 1998 when they bought the property off Route 55 in Broad Run. The farm first functioned as a nursery and producer for Community Landscape Services, which is also owned and operated by the DeWitts. It has been the couple’s combined passions— Bill’s experience in the landscape business and Michelle’s desire to feed her family fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the farm—that has allowed them to successfully operate the farm all these years. But when the couple discovered yet another mutual interest, homebrewing beer, it sparked the idea to open a brewery on the farm.

But simply opening a brewery wasn’t what the DeWitts had in mind. They invest time into not only the big picture, but also concentrate on the smallest details to create something unique and personal. The Farm Brewery at Broad Run is the perfect showpiece to prove that the DeWitts thought through every single aspect of their exciting new venture. The interior design looks like Joanna

Gaines stopped by and whipped it all together. The combination of wood and stainless steel with iron elements makes it feel authentic yet modern. Even the bathrooms were designed and implemented with thought. Two walls are lined with individual bathrooms labeled in cutout iron words: “Stand,” “Sit,” or “You Choose,” where parents of either gender can accompany their children.

Left: Meticulous planning went into the design of the taproom to make it feel as though it belonged on the farm. Right: Michelle and Bill DeWitt have owned the farm for years, but a common interest in homebrewing spurred the idea for a brewery.

Visitors can sip by the warm fireplace at one end of the taproom, sit at one of the long tables in the middle of the room, at one of the lower tables for families with kids, or at the bar alongside the serving tanks. The interior is gorgeous, but the exterior is a close rival. I have a feeling this summer a lot of families will be enjoying the beautiful surroundings outside of the taproom which include a large lawn space for families with kids to play. Just as much thought was put into the individuals the DeWitts wanted to be involved with the brewery. Michelle’s lifelong enthusiasm for fresh food and pure ingredients led her to a partnership with Aaron Lynch, owner of Hidden Julles Cafe of Warrenton and Haymarket. For years Lynch has been purchasing Michelle’s homegrown produce to use in the cafe. When Lynch got word of the brewery concept from on the farm, he knew that his food truck “THE RAMBLER” would make the perfect accompaniment. The food at Hidden Julles is known for being fresh, organic, and natural, but more importantly, delicious The partnership between the farm and

the cafe is “fluid” says Lynch. While the food truck will be available for visitors on the days the farm is open, there is also talk of a more extensive role. Lynch envisions dinner and beer pairings in the beautiful pavilion in the future. The Farm Brewery at Broad Run has enjoyed a successful opening and has been well received by the community. But this is just the beginning—the DeWitts look forward to many years of families enjoying their hospitality and making memories. ROSES

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORS AND SCENTS BY LYNNE GALLUZO

I

started growing roses as inspiration for my kaleidoscope drawings. It didn’t take long for me to get emotionally involved with the plants themselves. The colors, variety, scent, and cool, silky petals made me an avid collector, and I have grown as many as 50 varieties in my garden. My membership in the American Rose Society included a subscription to a magazine filled with information on rose culture, new roses, rose breeders, and the role of roses in history and art, which only fueled my enthusiasm. Frequently appearing in the articles and photos was the International Rose Test Garden in Portland Oregon, “The City of Roses.” (Even the manhole covers have a rose embossed on them.) Last October, we visited Seattle, and then Portland for a few days where the test garden is located. That area of

the country is infamous for its rainy weather and our visit coincided with the tail end of a typhoon from Asia, so the rain was pretty much endless. I had no idea if the test garden was open or if anything would be blooming. The rain stopped for a while, so we hiked up a significant hill and there at the top, with a view of Mt. Hood and Portland, with just a touch of sun to make everything sparkle, was the International Rose Test Garden. At least half of the plants were in bloom. If more than that were blooming it might have been too much for me to take in. The visit was perfect, and so were the roses. These plants receive the maximum care in a perfect climate. Some of the specimens were at least six feet tall. Many of the buds were as big as eggs. There were some varieties that were the

epitome of perfection, making my own backyard roses appear neglected. A really difficult thing for me to witness was the large wheelbarrows full of very healthy rosebushes that had completed their testing time and were being removed to make room for new ones. Since no rose leaves my garden unless it is dead, or without hope, it was all I could do to not trail after them and ask if they would like to share some discards. None of my roses look as vigorous as the ones they were sending to the compost pile. At that moment, I made a vow to give more time and attention to my own roses this year and see what they might become. On a warm, February day I pruned all of my roses. I even consulted a note, well, several notes, I had made in Portland of “must have” roses, but opted to concentrate on making the roses I already have happier and healthier. A few of my roses have only one or two strong stems. I placed a quarter to a half cup of Epsom salt around the base of each of them to encourage new stems (basal breaks). I also provided each plant with some slow-release fertilizer. The correct amount to apply does

vary so be sure to read the label. Too much can be as harmful as not enough. I also use compost to fertilize the roses. I have been pretty good with pruning and feeding my roses over the years, so by logical deduction I concluded my roses must need more water. Experts recommend giving rose bushes one gallon of water every week. A short rain won’t do it; a sprinkler system set up for lawns won’t do it either. If you are able to get a hose to your roses this is my handy dandy method for measuring a gallon with the hose. Count while you fill a bucket to the gallon mark with your hose. That will tell you how long to water the roses when you’re out there with just the hose. Watering is a great way to commune with your roses; enjoy new growth, lovely blooms, amazing scents, and inspect for any problems. I can recommend some stalwart roses in my garden that have hung in there in spite of me, the Virginia heat and humidity, and deer. Two separate David Austin Roses: Rosa ‘Graham Thomas’ (climbing form) and Rosa ‘Abraham Darby’ (shrub form). Both are lovely, fragrant, and tough-as-nails. While my favorite

color is pink, the yellow ‘Graham Thomas’ rose is my forever favorite. The first grandiflora rose (Rosa grandiflora ‘Queen Elizabeth’) keeps coming back every year — it grows to five feet or more and produces classic pink flowers. All of the Knock Out roses do well. My favorite is the Blushing rose (Rosa ‘Radyod’) which grows to about four feet high and blooms a beautiful light pink. The Mother of Pearl rose (Rosa ‘Mother of Pearl’) has light peach, fragrant flowers and is one of the many grandiflora roses available. Carefree Sunshine (Rosa ‘Radsun’) blooms continuously with bright yellow flowers, even in the shade of my cherry tree. The Sally Holmes rose (Rosa ‘Sally Holmes’) is a free form shrub. This particular rose gets tall, and is on the edge of my garden; it defies deer browsing, shares space with bee balm and Iris, and still showcases pretty white flowers. I don’t do kaleidoscope drawings anymore, but I still love roses. I love them enough to make an honest effort at treating them well this season. I am looking forward to seeing what the extra love can do for them! ❖
