Quality & Integrity from start to beautiful finish!

—The Tyen Tackett Story—

Minutes to live. Seconds to act. A lifetime to enjoy. “There was vomit on the bed, and Tyen was turning blue.” That’s how Vickie Tackett described the scene when she went in to check on her napping son. She immediately called 911, and an emergency crew rushed him to Fauquier Hospital. When they arrived, a medical team was standing by to take action. The entire staff was focused on Tyen. Except for one nurse, who realized Vickie needed a little help as well. “She came up and gave me a hug,” Vickie recalls. “It meant the world to me.” Images revealed that a bolt from Tyen’s bed was lodged in his airway. And, with steady hands, a doctor used a pair of forceps to pull the object out. “You could hear everyone in the room cheering,” Vickie remembers with a smile. Today, the loud sounds you hear coming from the Tackett house are that of a young boy playing cars, reading books and, well, just being a kid. To learn more about Tyen’s story, visit FHstories.org. History

The Tyler Family of Haymarket Influential family helped shape Western Prince William County

Part 1: George Grayson Tyler

By John T. Toler George Grayson Tyler (1869-1938) had a career in public service that spanned 40 years. This portrait hangs in the library at the elementary school in Haymarket named in his honor.

For years, many people in Haymarket have associated the surname “Tyler” with the George G. Tyler Elementary School, which opened in 1968, when the elementary schools in Western Prince William County were consolidated into one new school. The Tyler family of which George Grayson Tyler (1870-1938) was a member originally came from England, and at least nine generations of the family have lived in Virginia. George G. Tyler’s distinguished ancestors include fifth U.S. President James Monroe; George Mason, the “Father of the Bill of Rights;” and George Grayson, the first U.S. senator from Virginia. Closer to home, two of the founders of the Town of Haymarket in 1799 included 6

members of the Tyler family. George G. Tyler was the son of Robert Horner Tyler (1838-1903) of Haymarket. At the beginning of the Civil War, Robert Tyler joined the 8th Virginia Infantry under Capt. Edmund Berkley of Evergreen, northwest of Haymarket. A junior officer in the Evergreen Guard, Lt. Tyler participated in the routing of Union forces at the Battle of Balls Bluff on Oct. 21, 1861. By early 1863, Robert was promoted to the rank of captain, and in February married Sarah Sophie “Sallie” Chinn Tyler (1852-1917), the daughter of Benjamin Tasker Chinn (1807-1886) and Edmonia Randolph Carter Chinn (1813-1895). Benjamin Chinn built Ben Lomond, in Manassas in 1832.

Capt. Tyler was captured by Union troops in May 1863, while he was visiting Sallie at Mt. Airy, the Taylor family home in Richmond County where his wife and in-laws had fled after Manassas was overrun by Union forces in the spring of 1862. He was taken to Washington, D.C., and confined to the Old Capitol Prison. Capt. Tyler and Gen. W. H. “Rooney” Lee, son of Gen. Robert E. Lee, who had been captured and was being held at Ft. Monroe, Va., soon became pawns in a high-stakes prisoner of war incident. Confederates T. G. McGraw and William F. Corbin were captured while recruiting for the Confederate Army in Kentucky, and executed on May 15, Haymarket Lifestyle

Located in the village of Hickory Grove north of Haymarket, Clifton was the birthplace of George G. Tyler and several of his brothers and sisters. Clifton burned in 1903.

1863. In retaliation, the Confederates threatened to execute two captured Union officers – Capt. John Flinn and Capt. H. W. Sawyer – who were being held in Libby Prison in Richmond. “The Union was swift in its response,” wrote Haymarket historian Ellie Ivancic in an article about her family in the April 2003 edition of the Prince William Reliquary. “On July 15, in an attempt to stop the Confederates from killing the two Federal captains, General-in-Chief H. W. Halleck upped the ante. He ordered Col. William Ludlow (the Union agent for prisoner exchanges) to place Gen. Rooney Lee and another officer ‘not below the rank of captain’ in close confinement (ie: solitary) under heavy guard. He further ordered that upon receiving word of Sawyer and Flinn’s execution, Gen. Lee and the other hostage should be immediately hanged.” The second officer selected was Capt. Robert H. Tyler. As intense negotiations for a prisoner exchange dragged on, release of a third Union officer – Gen. Neal S. Dow, who had been captured in Louisiana in July March 2012

1863 – was added to the demands. While this was going on, the captives continued to suffer. “Capt. Tyler was kept in prison under constant threat of death, was held in close confinement for at least four months. In March 1864, was legitimately released with Rooney Lee in exchange for Sawyer, Flinn and Dow,” according to Mrs. Ivancic.

Capt. Robert Tyler, father of George Grayson Tyler, was a Confederate officer who served in the Evergreen Guard. Horner.

Capt. Tyler returned to duty, but was captured again at the Battle of Sayler’s Creek on April 6, 1865, and sent to the prison on Johnson’s Island, Ohio. The war over, he was paroled in June 1865 and returned home, living at The Shelter, north of Haymarket. After the war, Robert H. Tyler served in the Virginia legislature, and was appointed to the committee that successfully came up with the plan to adjust and settle the state debt of $28 million. While they lived at The Shelter and later, at Clifton, the Tyler family grew to include 12 children: Robert C., Bailey, Benjamin Chinn, George Grayson, Henry Taylor, Hanson B., Mary Ann, Carrie C., John Y., Edmonia N., Sallie Norton, and Matilda G. Tyler.

Sarah Sophie ‘Sallie’ Chinn and Robert H. Tyler were married in 1863. They were the parents of 12 children, all born in Prince William County.

After standing empty for years, The Shelter was demolished in the 1990s.

The Shelter was a working farm north of Haymarket and home of William B. Tyler, father of Robert H. Tyler. Generations of Tylers lived there as well.

A Life Well Lived Third-born son George G. Tyler attended the small Hickory Grove School after it opened in 1877, and later attended the Bryant-Stratton Business College in Baltimore. Returning to Haymarket after graduating, he helped his father on the farm. “Mr. Tyler taught school at Gainesville and Hickory Grove schools from 1898 to 1900,” according to George G. Tyler: A Virginia Gentleman, written by longtime former George G. Tyler Elementary School Librarian Nancy Thaete. “During this period, his family stayed part of the time at The Bungalow, a small house across Rt. 55 where Tyler School is today.” During 1902, the family faced two crises: Clifton burned, and patriarch Robert Tyler passed away. The family – including George, his mother and five unmarried sisters – moved to The Highands, a house at the intersection of Old Carolina Road and Jefferson Street in Haymarket. 8

Leaving teaching, Mr. Tyler was appointed Prince William County Deputy Treasurer, a post he held for five years, followed by two years service as a deputy sheriff. In 1909, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools, a post he held until 1916. During his tenure, Prince William County Public Schools grew in the number of students and the quality of education provided. “Mr. Tyler was paid an annual salary of $900, at a time when teachers were paid $25 per month,” wrote Ms. Thaete. “He had no office, and no secretary.” She also noted that Superintendent Tyler visited each school in the county at least once a month, traveling by horseback until the School Board allowed him to rent a horse and buggy. As the head of the public school system, Mr. Tyler was “… most efficient and loyal, and derived great pleasure from his visits to the public schools, and his contact with the children attending the same,” according to the resolution passed by the Prince William County

Board of Supervisors presented after his death. Appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court in March 1916, Mr. Tyler served in that office until his death in 1938. He was also the Census Enumerator for Gainesville District, and Clerk of the Draft Board during World War I. Mr. Tyler was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for nearly 50 years. At St. Paul’s, he served as Sunday School Superintendent, member of the choir, church vestry and as the Diocesan delegate. He was also a long-time member of the Hay Market Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M. “Mr. Tyler never married, and continued to live with his mother and sisters at The Highlands, “ according to Ms. Thaete. “ His nieces and nephews loved to visit ‘Uncle George’ and the aunts, and sometimes jokingly called The Highlands, “Aunt Hill.”

During the last years of his life, Mr. Tyler’s health began to fail, but he continued to serve as Clerk of the Court right up until his death on Sept. 2, 1938, at age 68. Mr. Tyler’s obituary, published in the Sept. 8, 1938 edition of the Manassas Journal, described him as “…one of the most beloved citizens of Prince William County and a member of its official force for nearly 30 years. He took a great deal of pride in his work, both official and in private life. He loved his county very dearly and was in every way a thorough Virginian.” In an editorial following Mr. Tyler’s death, the Manassas Journal noted, “This unostentatious gentleman of the Old South has passed from our midst as quietly as he lived. Always considerate, unselfish and generous, all classes mourn him. Mere words cannot describe nor measure his worth. Sorrow stricken, we can only stand in silence and mark his passing with tears.”

Ben Lomond, on the western side of Manassas, was the family home of the Chinn family. Edmonia Randolph Carter Chinn (inset) was George G. Tyler’s maternal grandmother.

Tyler Elementary School honors Mr. Grayson’s memory, and his service as an educator and administrator in Prince William County. Opened on Oct. 12, 1968, Tyler Elementary School consolidated

the smaller elementary schools that previously served the area. It currently has about 630 students drawn from the communities of Crossroads, Greenhill Crossing, Haymarket Station, Parks of Piedmont and Pageland. Principal of Tyler Elementary is Jennifer Perilla, and about 40 teachers are assigned to the school. Part 2, to be published in April, will focus on other notable members of the Tyler family.

Fauquier Health Continuing Care Facilities Join Planetree Pilot Program Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton has been a Planetree-designated hospital since 2007; in fact, it was redesignated in 2010 for a second three-year term. Although The Villa at Suffield Meadows assisted living facility and Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center (FHRNC) have consistently incorporated Planetree philosophies, there has never been an official Planetree designation for continuing care facilities – until now. Planetree, an organization dedicated to patient-centered care, has launched a multi-year pilot program to test its Planetree Designation criteria in continuing care settings. FHRNC and The Villa at Suffield Meadows have been among those chosen to participate in the pilot. Feedback from employees and residents at The Villa and FHRNC will help refine the program to ensure that it represents the best patient-centered care practices.

The Villa at Suffield Meadows Planetree facilities strive to provide a comfortable, soothing, resident-centered physical environment. The Villa at Suffield Meadows was built with that philosophy in mind. Fifty-six apartments, from studios to two-bedrooms, are arranged in neighborhoods with lots of open, comfortable common areas. Planetree also recognizes that older residents who are engaged and interested are healthier and happier. The Villa has an active resident council; its members make suggestions on leisure activities, new initiatives and menus. The calendar is filled with games, crafts, exercise classes, lectures and special events and The Villa van takes regular trips to wineries, farmers markets and shopping venues. Sarah Pearson, administrator of The Villa, says, “One of our residents, Sid Cumins, organized an informal card-playing group. They get together about six times a month, and I can hear them in the game room, laughing and cracking up. Mr. Cumins also likes to do woodworking, so we set up a space for him to do that.” Patty Koval, The Villa’s activities director, said that The Villa’s exercise rooms are always buzzing. “The treadmills and bikes are in constant use, and classes given by the exercise physiologists of the Fauquier Health Wellness Center are very popular.” Pearson said, “Assisted living is all about choices. We like to make sure our residents have lots of options to pursue their own interests.” Delicious food is an important piece of the Planetree model; it provides nourishment, of course, but also pleasure and a chance to socialize. Other special features at The Villa include a beauty salon, spa, movie theater, a library equipped with computers, and walking trails. Outdoor areas include a patio with an outdoor fireplace and raised flower beds for those residents who like to garden.

Employees and residents of The Villa danced the night away during The Villa’s one year anniversary celebration.

The Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Chad Perkey, administrator of FHRNC, says that his staff has been working in groups that focus on the components of Planetree: food and nutrition, and arts and entertainment, for instance. Residents may enjoy a beach day or an international day, a county fair day or a fiesta day -- with a Mariachi band. There is a even a special wheelchair-accessible garden for residents who would like to tend their own small plot of earth. FHRNC recently redecorated its dining room and rearranged its seating plan so that all residents enjoy meals together. Employees are encouraged to share meals with residents as well. “There’s a lot more interaction, and that’s good for everyone,” says Perkey.

The Carriage House is a separate memory-support neighborhood designed for those with memory impairment or dementia. The twelve patients in this community enjoy the many patient-centered amenities of The Villa in a more secure environment.

Of course, Planetree requires that residents in long-term care facilities receive the best medical care, too. Toward that end, electronic records are replacing paper charts. Perkey says, “Electronic records are not only more secure, but they allow us to track care better. Everything is in real time. I can securely go online anytime, from anywhere, and find out the last time a patient was checked on or review their medical status. It improves accountability and helps us to be more patient-focused.”

To learn more about the services and apartments available at The Villa, call 540-316-3800 or go to www.warrentonvilla.org.

ARE YOUR FITNESS GOALS HOLDING UP?

Let’s face it, we all have great intentions, but when it comes to sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, our health and fitness goals are usually the first to be abandoned. As a Master Fitness Trainer, creator and lead instructor of Gladiator Fitness Boot Camp, I’d like to provide you with a few insights on why I think this happens to so many every year, and more importantly, provide you with a few tips and suggestions on how you can stay on track this spring with your 2012 fitness goals. One of the most important tips I can pass on is that you must not sabotage yourself by setting goals that are not realistic. Year after year, I witness this same mistake being made by overly ambitious clients. Let’s take Jane for example. On January 1st, Jane is all fired up and rearing to go with great intentions and lots of enthusiasm. 14

Jane’s joined a gym, she’s got her fancy new gym attire, she’s hired a personal trainer, and she is absolutely determined to lose all that flab and get ready for the beach! Jane insists that she is going to exercise two hours per day, six days per week, and nothing is going to stop her, not even my advice to scale back her aggressive goals a bit! Granted, Jane is like a lot of other folks, she is desperate and determined to achieve that “beach body” look she’s been promising herself for years, but can never seem to achieve. Hey, but this year is going to be different for Jane, so she charges off full steam ahead to the gym, and to her credit, she actually does great for the first 30 days, and is even doing pretty well on day 60, however, by the end of March, it’s evident that most of her steam, if not all of it, has just about burned out. In the fitness world, we refer to this as a client “hitting the wall.” Again, this is not

uncommon, so if it’s happened to you in the past, or perhaps is even happening to you right now, don’t lose faith, I’ve got some great advice on how you can get back on track and get that steam engine fired-up again! First, you need to re-examine your goals, and if needed, adjust those goals by ensuring they are both realistic and achievable! Let’s be honest, there are a few things in life that are guaranteed to happen, and you already know what two of those are, and I’m here to tell you the third, which is life is always going to get in the way of your fitness goals! Yep, just like the other two, this one is guaranteed to happen, so you’ve got to expect it, and you’ve got to be prepared to deal with it when life smacks you in the mouth. Intense regimens with goals that are resolution continued on page 16 Haymarket Lifestyle

not realistic easily create a problem, as Jane’s above – she set herself up for failure. Keep in mind, exercise is not an all or nothing endeavor, it is a continuum. The key to achieving your results will not be what you did during January or February, but what you continue do through the entire year of 2012 and beyond. Next, I want you to keep in mind that achieving your health and fitness goals, and any goal for that matter, is all about the “C” word: CONSISTENCY! By that I’m referring to consistency in both your commitment to exercise and diet. Even if you were able to maintain such an intense exercise regimen, exercising 2 hours per day and 6 days per week, your results would still be minimal if you were not eating right. Which is why I continually remind my clients that exercise and diet are like the two wheels of a bicycle; you’ve got to keep both wheels going at all times if you expect to go anywhere. Burning body fat and building lean muscle requires time and discipline, it cannot be done overnight, and cannot be achieved with some magic pill, or some new fangled piece of exercise equipment that you see on some late night infomercial! Also know that realistic goals do not 16

have to be small, they can be big, but most importantly, they must be powerful. If your goals are not powerful enough, then it will be too easy for you to make excuses on why you don’t have the time or energy to exercise or eat healthy. Trust me, this is really important so set aside some time to do this, and when you come up with your powerful goal, write it down and then take it a step further and tell a few friends about it. Perhaps your goal is running a marathon, completing an adventure race like the Super Spartan or Tough Mudder, maybe it is showing off your smokin’ hot body on an upcoming Caribbean cruise! Your goal could be to shed fifty pounds and shock the heck out of everyone at your next high school reunion, beat your teenager in the 100-yard dash, or you just want to fit into those darn skinny jeans again!

Whatever your fitness and health goals happen to be this year, it really doesn’t matter, so long as the goals you choose are realistic and powerful enough to keep you charging ahead whenever life happens to get in the way. As you prepare to leap into spring, remember that a better body does not come in a pill or a bottle, and fat loss success does not depend upon the particular training program you choose. There are many different approaches to exercise and nutrition that can work, but the one thing that must always be there is a goal and the burning desire to achieve it. When you don’t have it, no diet or workout will help. When you do have it, nothing can stop you from getting the body you want!

Coaxing Spring Now is the time to take your cleaned and sharpened pruners (see February’s article) and put them to good use. This is multi-tasking at its best. You clean up your trees and bushes by pruning and brighten your home with spring bloom. Pick a sunny, mild afternoon and walk around your yard looking at your trees and flowering shrubs for crossing branches, dead branches and places that the deer rutted up. Cut out all of these - leaving a healthy, well structured plant ready for the upcoming growing season. Save the cut branches that are at least 12” long and show evidence of bud swelling. Bring them inside, smash the bottom of the stems and place them in a large vase of lukewarm water with a bit of preservative in it. There are commercial preservatives like the packs that come with florist flowers or homemade ones like 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide or 1 tablespoon of Listerine or 1 tablespoon of lemon lime soda. The main point is to keep the water fresh and slow down the growth of bacteria. Keep the branches in a cool place and away from direct sun. Change the water when it gets stale and cut a little more off of the stems. You can mist them occasionally if you like. The aim is to simulate spring conditions – cool and moist. In anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks you should have lovely flowering branches well ahead of outdoors and you cleaned up your yard too!

Choosing the Perfect Paint Colors for Your Home By Paola McDonald

Add a Little Color to Your Life Painting can be the most impactful and often least expensive way to completely change the look of a room, but choosing the perfect shade for a given space can turn into an overwhelming and sometimes daunting task for many homeowners. It’s something Haymarket resident Jennifer Peltier didn’t realize when she started thinking about painting her home a couple of years ago.

“I have an image in my mind of what [paint colors] I would like yet I am unable to come up with that color in real life,” stated Peltier. “And I have an idea of what colors I like, but I am unable to make them work with the decorating and architecture that I already have.”

Although painting is a relatively inexpensive way to make a big impact in a room, homeowners fear wasting time, energy and money by choosing the wrong colors. Luckily there are a few resources right here in our backyard that can help reduce your paint selection stress.

She’s not alone. Many homeowners I meet are more than a little stressed about selecting paint colors on their own.

Vienna Paint in Gainesville, a Benjamin Moore dealer, for example, provides several resources to help you with your quest for paint continued on page 20

Left: Wallpaper is making a big comeback. The vertical stripes help to make a small space feel taller and adds interest to an otherwise bland bathroom. Right: Stripes in varying shades of blue give this contemporary space a “beachy” feel. the perfect shade for your space. Most notably, their complimentary in-store color consultations, provided weekday afternoons and some Saturdays by yours truly along with two other color experts, Anji Johnston, a local decorator, painter and faux finisher and Bridgett Wilson of Bridgett Wilson Designs. Simply bring photos of your space and/or furnishings, samples of your tile or granite, upholstery or window treatment fabrics or whatever it is you are trying to coordinate your colors with (I’ve seen people bring in entire area rugs). One of the color experts can help you narrow down to those colors that would best compliment your space and belonging. And the best part, it’s free! It sure beats bringing home bunches of paint chips and not being totally certain if what you’ve chosen is correct. Andrew Mosher, Vienna Paint Area Manager has seen his share of stressed out homeowners visit the store. “They come into the store with their hair standing on ends, lugging in about a thousand paint chips that they’ve narrowed it down to,” he laughs. “Once they speak to one of our consultants, you can see the tension release from their shoulders… [and] they feel more comfortable about moving forward with their paint project.” With his 19 years of paint experience and an incredible knowledge of all things 20

paint-related, he gladly steps in when the consultants aren’t in the store to help clients choose that perfect paint color. Quite a feat, considering he’s actually color blind. If in-store consultations just aren’t enough to help you choose that perfect shade, the store’s professional paint consultants also provide in-home analyses, for a small fee. This is an ideal way to help you choose the right colors, and it’s worth it. The consultants not only consider paint colors, but they do so while also evaluating your specific space, lighting, architectural features, existing furnishings and fabrics. This allows them to make the most informed suggestions to enhance your own space and style. “This setup gave me the freedom to explore the colors that I liked and thought would work together, but also the security in knowing that I could drop by the store and make sure that my choices didn’t look completely terrible,” Peltier said about the in-home consultation services. “Having a [paint] consultant also opened up a whole new realm of decorating ideas with wallpaper.” Consultations aren’t the only tool out there for paint selection, though. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, there are a few secret weapons to get your color selection bragging rights. Paint manufacturers, such

as Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams, spend fortunes to research color trends and assemble coordinated and easy to use color palates to help you look like a pro when selecting a color palate for your space. Each company has compiled many different paint chip books that you can purchase for easy color selection in your own home. Some of the chips within these books are compiled based on similar but coordinating colors while others are based on varying gradations of the same color. A simple tip for choosing your own paint colors is to select a color strip with one color you like and then select your coordinating colors by going up or down on that same strip. Some stores even have specific color chip books with coordinating color palates for any design style or color preference. Another great tip for easy color selection is to choose an inspiration piece to pull your colors from. This inspiration piece can be something you already own or something new you want to incorporate into your space. It can be an accent pillow, drapery panel, area rug, pretty much anything that you love and really want to base the design for that room around. Once you have a piece selected, simply pick the color that is least represented within that piece. For example, if you have an accent pillow that you love and it has three different colors within it, find the color that is the least Haymarket Lifestyle

NOW YOU’LL KNOW WHERE YOUR TEENAGERS ARE ON FRIDAY NIGHT

represented among those three and consider using it as your paint color. You’ll be amazed at what that does to really bring out that inspiration piece and set the tone for the rest of the design for that room. Once you have narrowed down favorite colors, bring home pintsized paint samples or larger paper color chips available at the Vienna Paint store and put them up on the wall in several places. Observe the colors during different times of the day to get a true feel for how it will look in your space, as many colors appear to change throughout the day. And why stop only at paint. Vienna Paint of Gainesville is a one-stop decorating shop where you can also purchase wallpaper (which, by the way, is making a big comeback), upholstery and window treatment fabrics, custom window treatments, bedding and upholstered headboards, as well as shutters. “Overall, I’ve been in the store about a half dozen times over the ••Anne (spring) qtrpgmagad_color:Layout 1 1/15/09 2:52 last three months, and the employees are always eager to help and address any questions,” Peltier said. “I will always use that store as a source for paint and decorating ideas, simply because I get good, personalized service, and I love the Ben Moore colors.”

What We Think, We Become

Have you ever wondered why is it that some people seem so happy, so successful and so together? Some of the best advice I was ever given as a young person was, “You become what you think about.”

Every single thing we see, hear and do has an influence on what we think about. It’s like that computer saying--garbage in, garbage out: well, it works in the reverse as well, thank goodness, for humans! As our young children are growing up we need to consider what they are putting “in” if they are watching positive movies and shows like The Waltons or Touched by an Angel, you can be assured the ideas that are being planted in their sweet, innocent little minds are going to be a good influence on them. We have such an incredible opportunity to help mold them into incredible human beings, their minds and spirits are like sponges longing to be filled with truth and hope and love. The example we set will make ALL of the difference. I think a lot of parents don’t want to take a good, hard look at their own lives because it would require change and sacrifice in order to be the very best example for our children. Our children deserve it and they need it desperately in order to be successful and have real joy! So, the next time that your tempted to jam in the car to Lady Gaga, remember that you have an incredibly beautiful, pure heart and mind listening and taking it in, we BECOME what we surround ourselves with and I don’t think there’s one mom out there that wants their child to be a “bad kid” or a “monster” with a “poker face.”

Make-Up Tips for Teens -ALWAYS wash your make up off before you go to sleep. If you don’t, it will clog your pores and create acne! -Wash your makeup brushes on a regular basis, at least once a week. They are a breeding ground for bacteria that causes acne. Use a good brush cleaner; we recommend Bare Minerals. -A mineral foundation will allow your skin to breathe better, keep pores from getting clogged and help maintain a natural look. Bare Minerals is a great foundation. -Never let your eyes compete with your lips. If your eyes are dramatic, make your lips subtle, and vise-versa. -Lip gloss can be very drying if used daily. Your lips need to be exfoliated occasionally and moisturizer daily before bed. We recommend Dermalogica Climate Control Lip Treatment. -Don’t over-do the black eyeliner. If you use too much, it makes the eyes look smaller and cheapens your overall look. -Have a professional makeup lesson done when you are ready to start wearing make up; leave it to the professionals to get you started on the right path!

Retirement Basics

$

One of the most talked about issues in the current economy is how we can prepare for a secure retirement. Since the financial meltdown in fall of 2008, many people have had to reduce their savings rate, and in fact some have had to dip into their retirement accounts to weather the financial storm. For those who are close to retirement age, they may need to reevaluate their situation to determine if working longer will help provide the resources needed. People who are in the savings mode need to make sure that they are saving enough. What are the primary things to consider when saving for retirement?

Longevity The average life expectancy in 1935 when Social Security originated was 61.7 years. For those who worked until age 65, many did not live long enough to collect much from their Social Security accounts. Contrast with 2010, the average life expectancy has grown to 78.7. And

this is the “average.” How many people do you know who are already beyond that age? It’s important to note that if you retire at the “full retirement age” to collect your full Social Security benefit, you may potentially live another 30 or more years in “retirement!”

Living Expenses It’s likely that your living expenses may be reduced at the time of retirement. Taxes will be lower, and savings are now a source of income, instead of a reduction. Based on a study by The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, those with pre-retired income of $50,000 or above can expect to need about 80% of pre-retired income to have a secure retirement. The study also revealed that those who start saving at age 25 for retirement will need to save approximately 12% of income to retire securely at age 67, while those who start saving at age 45 will need to put away about 31%.

For those who are employed with a 401k, 403b or TSP plan benefit, employers often match a portion of the amount saved. Be sure to take advantage of this benefit, as it will increase your overall savings more rapidly. For the self-employed, discuss the options for retirement savings with your tax advisor. Some tax-deferred vehicles are often overlooked, such as the SelfEmployed 401k. The best way to make sure you are saving is to have funds withdrawn automatically and put into an account that is not touched. “Pay Yourself First” and stay on the road to Financial Security in Retirement.

Barbecue Brothers BAD TO THE BONE SMOKEHOUSE Local stepbrothers Chase Hoover and Bobby Lytle teamed up combining their entrepreneurial enthusiasm and love for good food to bring a casual barbecue joint with style and flavor to Gainesville. Hickory logs create a crackling fire that smokes to naturally tenderize while creating a succulent soft pink color and a tantalizing smoky taste in their quality meats. Their dry rubs and homemade sauces are the perfect concoction of spices and ingredients to slather, smother or dip. Their friendly atmosphere and respectable dishes would impress any seasoned barbecue lover. Pulled Pork Nachos are preferred when ordering a starter and perfect to share. Crispy tortilla chips are piled high with Carolina

Pulled Pork, warm queso cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. Or try the Sample Platter, a plate embellished with sliced Brisket, Carolina Pulled Pork, House Sausage and one St. Louis Rib to taste their in-house specialties. Their Smokehouse Wings are meaty and prepared by smoking, grilling and tossing them with your choice of Honey Bourbon (hot or mild), Original BBQ or Teriyaki sauces. Looking for light leafy greens? Order their Smokin’ Salad made with fresh mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, avocado, and onion straws complemented with your choice of Sliced Beef Brisket or Grilled Chicken. Match your salad with a hardy

soup; they change daily but imagine Brisket and Rib Chili. Add the Stuffed Potato to your soup or salad, it’s packed with butter, sour cream, melted cheddar-jack and your choice of Pulled Pork, Chopped Brisket or Pulled Chicken. Burgers, sandwiches and plates are all sizeable in portion and incredibly satisfying. The BBQ Burger is monstrous with a ½ pound of certified Angus beef topped with Pulled Pork or Chopped Brisket, grilled onions, pepper-jack cheese and onion straws all accented with house BBQ sauce. Garlic-roasted Pork Sausage sliced and placed on a French roll with grilled onions and peppers makes their House Sausage Sandwich. All sandwiches and burgers are served with a side of your choice. “Most people are surprised by our Brisket,” Hoover mentioned. “The way we cook it we are able to present a dish you can eat with little or no sauce if you want to or you can put sauce on it and still get that great moist beef flavor that people really look for in Brisket.” The Georgia Chopped Pork Plate is full of fresh Pork Shoulder rubbed and slow-smoked for 14-16 hours, densely chopped and marinated in their homemade BBQ sauce. The Hickory-Smoked Half Chicken is dry rubbed, slow-smoked and finished with a honey BBQ glaze; this dish will not disappoint. March 2012

“There is a lot we are trying to get people to catch on to but the Smoked Half Chicken is really good,” Lytle said. “It’s moist and smoky, when people do order it, they enjoy it.” Their Rib Dinners are slow-smoked for a tender, savory flavor and served in a half or full rack. Combination Plates are excellent for trying two, three, or four meats and paired with two sides. Family Packs are available to feed friends and family. They made four convenient options with plenty of choices to customize your meal to feed anywhere from a group of four up to twelve to fourteen people. Partner up their tasty smoked meats with sides like ranch beans, cole slaw, potato salad, the daily veggie, seasonal sweet corn, or mac & cheese. Bad to the Bone Smokehouse is located at 8045 Stonewall Shops Square in Gainesville, to the right of Dick’s Sporting Goods. new savings.

Monumental IPA is a rich copper color, and is intensely hoppy. Port City adds a special blend of American hops throughout the brewing and fermentation process to create a complex combination of aroma and flavor. This ale exhibits floral notes, flavors of citrus and resin, combined with delicious caramel background notes. Magnum, Centennial Amarillo and Liberty hops ABV – 6.3%

IBU – 50

Maker: Port City Brewing Company is a new craft brewery located in metropolitan Washington, DC. They are an artisanal brewery in Alexandria, Virginia producing an exciting line of handmade, great quality, locally crafted ales for the DC and Mid Atlantic Market. Thoughts: “While the nose has a good deal more hop presence, the taste is much more balanced with a nice level of malt sweetness starting things off. It’s quickly followed by a decent hop presence that is fruity with hints of tangerine and grapefruit, as well as a moderate amount of bitterness that lingers in the crisp, clean finish. It’s got a great balance and is easy drinking — an ideal combination for sitting on the back deck after pushing a mower around the yard for a couple of hours. “-Local Blogger Ray – BarleyBlog.com “Monumental IPA is an interesting IPA - the first thing you will notice is the gorgeous copper color of the Ale. From a flavor perspective, there is a nice intersection of hops and citrus notes, with hints of pine and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall, a crisp, refreshing, delicious IPA - one that will probably appeal to a larger audience of beer drinkers who don’t like being smacked over the head with Hops!” - Local- Neal Emerald
