GIVING BACK
to Those Who Gave So Much by Kelsey Dominick
In the fall of 2006, Pastor Barry White of Park Valley Church in Haymarket, asked each of the church’s small groups to take on some type of community service project for a period of 40 days. One of the small groups, led by Shirley and John Dominick of Haymarket, decided to visit our country’s recovering military service members at Walter Reed Medical Center. The experience profoundly affected all of the small group members in such a way that they decided to continue their visits indefinitely. Over the course of the past seven years, the visits expanded in scope and size to include Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital. The visits provided opportunities to spend quality time in conversation with our country’s wounded, ill,
and injured service members and their families, thanking them for the sacrifices they have made and reassuring them their fellow citizens cared for them. These visits proved to be morale boosts for the service members, whose average hospital stay at Walter Reed is 300 days, and even more so for the family members. All of their lives had been changed forever, but the time spent with the volunteers who visited truly seemed to make a difference. Since their first visit to Walter Reed, the volunteer group has continued to work at improving their mission. In the summer of 2012, Shirley Dominick decided to establish the non-profit organization, Serve Our Willing Warriors, in order to expand the tangible services they provided. The organization grew quickly gathering membership and the support of many people throughout the surrounding communities. As fate would have it, an idea was presented to

the group to provide a temporary retreat facility for the country’s recovering warriors and their family members. All the members of Serve Our Willing Warriors felt this was just the kind of service they would like to provide on a continuing basis. The retreat facility would be a place where an entire family could enjoy a week or two of rest giving back continued on page 8

and relaxation – a getaway from the daily routine of their lengthy outpatient care. Although this was a great idea, finding or building such a facility presented an awesome challenge. That’s when the miracle happened. Shirley started searching for suitable properties and located an 11,000 square foot house for sale on 37 acres of land in the foothills of the historic Bull Run Mountains right in Haymarket. At about the same time, the IRS approved Serve Our Willing Warriors as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Virginia Corporation. So, in March of 2013, the property was purchased and the Bull Run Warrior Retreat was established. The house is now being renovated and transformed into a beautiful new lodging house, complete with full handicapped accessible features and many wonderful amenities. A Home Built 35 Years Ago For The Purpose of Our Mission This 11,000 square foot house was built on a very large scale in 1977 and was often used for large social gatherings over the years. Many of the non-profit members, as well as visitors, notice that the house was built to almost perfect specifications for the current intended purpose of a retreat lodging house.

Some of the on and off-site activities available to the guests will include:

Once the existing house on the property is renovated, Serve Our Willing Warriors plans to build three additional 3-bedroom houses on the 37-acre property. At that point, four or five families at any one time will be able to enjoy their time together. Shirley, a retired Air Force Officer of 22 years adds, “Although it will take a substantial amount of resources to achieve our goals, we’re very confident of our success based on the level of community support we’ve experienced so far. always felt this was a higher calling from the very beginning and now I know it to be true by the way people are being moved to support us in this mission.” Community Support Community support for the Bull Run Warrior Retreat has been heart-warming to the members of the non-profit group. As the word spreads, more and more sponsors are stepping forward to be associated with this great community project that seems destined to be a beacon of light in Prince William County and the surrounding communities. Examples of this support include Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and High School sports teams and clubs that have provided community service projects such as; gardening and mulching, grounds cleanup and clearing, fence painting and repair, spreading the word about our special fundraising events and more. Many other members of the surrounding communities have visited the property and committed to fundraising projects, working on various committees, and making donations of time, materials, money and labor. Local contractors who have donated their services include Greco Masonry of Haymarket, Fibertek Inc. of Herndon, Stone Center of Manassas, Homestead Building Systems of Bristow, Ralston Architects of Chantilly, and Signature Kitchens of Haymarket just to name a few. Some of our elected officials including County Supervisor, Pete Candland, and State Delegate, Dave Ramadan, have visited the property and are in full support of the project. Although the goal is for the Bull Run Warrior Retreat to be 10
operational this year, everything is dependent on the support received by individuals, companies, and organizations. The material needs for the renovation work on the retreat house are for the installation of an elevator, a wheelchair lift, replacement windows, a whole house generator and kitchen appliances. The human resource needs are for people willing to commit their time and work on any number of committee positions. John Dominick added, “Our goal is not just about Serve Our Willing Warriors being successful. It’s really about engaging the surrounding community to give back something meaningful to some very special young men, women, and their families who sacrificed so much for all of us. If everyone plays a part, the end result will be a win-win situation for everyone involved.” To learn more about Serve Our Willing Warriors and the Bull Run Warrior Retreat, please visit the website at: www.willingwarriors.org. VARSITY GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM by Jessica Kronzer
Winter sports are over and now warm weather is welcoming sports like softball. After a long winter, many softball players are eager for the new season. Softball is not only an intense sport, but a great bonding experience. Members of the Battlefield Girls’ Varsity Softball Team opened up about this enjoyable sport and their expectations for the upcoming season.
Taylor Adams, a sophomore on the team, commented on the bond between her teammates and acknowledged the important role camaraderie plays in creating an unbeatable team, “We work together well.” Adams said the team’s best quality is “coming together when we are down.” She believes that a combination of trust and support can make a winning team.
Freshman Saige Cisler, a new member of the varsity softball team, commented about her varsity teammates, “They’re like my sisters.” Team sports at school are a great way for students to connect and learn about both teamwork and the sport.
Natalie Rosenthal, another freshman on the team, has faith in her teammates stating, “I think that we will be strong offensively [because] we are all very good hitters.” Defense doesn’t seem to be a problem either with Rosental mentioning, “I think we have really good pitches and good infielders.”
UPCOMING HOME GAMES: 05.08.14 6PM VS. WESTFIELD 05.13.14 6PM VS. OSBOURN 05.16.14 6PM VS. FREEDOM
Softball coach, Joe Schelzo is confident in his team’s ability and said “The depth of our talent is our program’s strength. The challenge will be identifying the best of that group and moving them into positions to help our program be successful at a region and state level this year and beyond.” Scherzo has high hopes for the varsity softball team. The BHS girls’ varsity softball team is a great way for students to play softball and build strong friendships. The softball team looks forward to an exciting yet challenging season.

BHS BATTLE OF THE BANDS: FROM A PARTICIPANTS PERSPECTIVE by Andrew Young
The 2014 Battlefield High School Battle of the Bands was everything a local music fan would want. Every band was diverse, different, energetic and brought forth a new element to take the show to new heights and make this year more entertaining. As the lead singer of Nine Hand Riot, this was my take and experience with the other bands, and the show as a whole. The organization of the event was well run. Applications were sent to a committee that included two demo songs and bands waited to hear back to see if they were selected. Three bands were selected for the line up including Nine Hand Riot as well as our friends in A.K.A. and Lions are for Chasing. This made for one of the most talented lineups we’ve ever been apart of. The guys in the other bands and people running set-up were phenomenal. Every band was super friendly and generous. Deja Brew volunteers Tom Nichols and sound
man Cameron Lodge, were there to organize the set up. They were very direct, but were kind and a pleasure to work with. They did all they could to make the show into the best organized and sounding show to date. I realized as the show began, there was something awesome going on in the room. There were three extremely different, yet musically tight bands that were playing. After all of us in NHR played first, we got ready to hear the guys in A.K.A. take their run at the stage. Opening with “Sail”, a cover of AWOLNATION, followed by a mixture of covers and originals such as the moody “Broken Wings,” and the uptempo tunes of “Unexpected” and “Average Teen Angst,” the guys certainly did make their punk rock presence felt by everyone in the auditorium. Junior Max Nichols’ vocals and guitar work were on point all show, and one of the highlights of the bands set. Freshman drummer Andrew Bannan had some ridiculous moments throughout the bands time on stage, including one of the tightest drum parts I’ve ever heard as a music fan in “Broken Wings.” Sophomore bassist Chris Aitken tore it up all show on his 5-string, and you would think he was on the track team for how fast he was running across the stage during “Unexpected.” Lions are for Chasing took the stage next, as the final act of the show. These guys brought some of the best energy of the night. Even without lead vocalist Ryan Strong, who unfortunately could not play, the guys left a great impression on the Battlefield crowd. Senior drummer Anthony Inglimo has repeatedly proved himself to be a high school drum virtuoso, and his drumming was essentially perfect all night. Both bassist Brian Pierce and his guitarist
14
brother Dylan Pierce shared lead vocal duty, and sounded good doing so! The guys in Lions had one of the best stage presences of the show. They too played a mixture of covers and originals, notably covering Blink-182’s “After Midnight” and a stellar pop punk rendition of “This Love” by Maroon 5. After a set by the all-star line up of battle of the bands alumni Alex Williams’ Berklee College band, the winner was announced, ending an energetic night and celebration of music. Every band was incredible and made for one of the best “battles” that our school has ever had. All of our bands are on Facebook, and followers can be kept up-to-date on upcoming shows and happenings. Be sure to check out Nine Hand Riot, A.K.A and Lions are for Chasing. CONGRATULATIONS NINE HAND RIOT FOR WINNING THE 2014 BATTLE OF THE BANDS! Haymarket Lifestyle

Cut off from the rest of the world… FRIGHTENING INCIDENT LEFT PART OF HAYMARKET’S BUSINESS DISTRICT IN ASHES by John T. Toler
On the afternoon of Sept. 1, 1945, the Town of Haymarket suffered what is likely the second most destructive fire in its history. Two important structures in the center of town – the U.S. Post Office and the building housing the TriCounty Telephone Co. and the Western Union offices – burned to the ground. While this was happening, Haymarket was cut off from the rest of the world. At the time, Manassas attorney Stanley Owens owned the local telephone company and both of the structures that were lost, as well as the nearby Haymarket Bank building. According to a report in the Sept. 6, 1945 edition of The Fauquier Democrat, “Considerable delay in getting firefighting apparatus to Haymarket was caused by the fact that the telephone exchange, housed in the building where the fire originated, was immediately paralyzed.
“It was necessary to drive to The Plains to call the Warrenton fire department, and to Manassas to summon the fire department from that town. Both buildings were practically a total loss when the firemen from those towns arrived on the scene.”
Also known as “Beulah,” c. 1837 Kalarama was the home of Ella Pearson’s mother, Mrs. Mary Margaret Lunceford (1864-1966), who had moved there a few years after the death of her husband, Henry Franklin Lunceford (1850-1930).
Also lost in the fire were two apartments in the telephone exchange building. Clyde Pearson (c. 19101963) and his wife, Ella (1907-1992) and their three children occupied the upstairs apartment, and the downstairs unit was rented to a Mrs. Foley. Clyde Pearson was a housepainter, while both Ella Pearson and Mrs. Foley worked at the telephone exchange as switchboard operators.
Kalarama was owned by Dorothy L. W. Archibald (1898-1977), the widow of Teller Archibald (1879-1936), who lived nearby at Archwood Farm. The rent was $6 per month, and Mrs. Lunceford’s stepsons also provided labor for the farm.
The Pearsons moved to Haymarket from Kalarama, their long-time family home about one mile east of The Plains, in 1942.
Kalarama, a large old house east of The Plains, was the family home of Clyde and Ella Pearson. All three of their children were born there. The Pearsons moved to Haymarket in 1942. 16
All of Clyde and Ella’s children were born at Kalarama: Betty Jane (better known simply as “Jane,” born in 1937), Lee Shirley (born in 1938) and William Nelson (1942-1984). Although she was very young when the family moved from Kalarama, Jane remembers the house well. “It was so

cut off continued from page 16 big that we would take tricycles and ride from the upstairs all the way through there,” she recalled. “I loved that house. It was so big and interesting. Years later, we wanted to go back and see it, but it had burned,” in March 1985. Arriving in Haymarket, the Pearsons stayed briefly at Burnside, north of town, which was owned by a relative, Irvin “Bud” Creel at the time. Soon afterward, they rented the upstairs apartment in the telephone exchange building. The children attended the nearby Haymarket Elementary School. Jane recalls that when she was in Mrs. Helen Clark’s first grade class, there were four girls named “Betty.” In order to avoid confusion, only Betty Jarman got to keep “Betty;” the other three girls were called by their middle names – in her case, “Jane.” Visiting their grandmother back at Kalarama was no problem for the Pearson children. A Trailways bus ran between Haymarket and The Plains every day, and they could ride for 15 cents. The telephone exchange building was an interesting place to work, and live. Jane recalls that the switchboard operators knew everyone on the party lines, and often went beyond the call of duty to help out. A typical example was when legendary Haymarket citizen Brownie Bass was on her way to the beauty parlor or shopping, she would stop by the
telephone exchange and inform Mrs. Pearson or whoever was on duty that she wouldn’t be home for a while, and to tell any callers to try later. Long before answering machines were invented, the message was personally handled.
THE BIG FIRE OF ‘45
On the afternoon of Sept. 1, 1945, Mrs. Foley came in to the office to start her shift. “She went into the break room to make coffee in a percolator on the stove, and somehow it fell over or blew over, and set the house on fire,” recalled Jane. “It was a frame house, so it didn’t take much for it to go up. I was there when it happened, but I don’t remember the smoke and flames… maybe I just blanked it out. “My mother had been to Melton’s store, and brought in a bag of groceries. When she saw that the building was on fire, she grabbed her groceries and an alarm clock, and went out the door.” The hot fire spread across Washington Street to the Roland house, where some of the siding was burned. “Our was father working in Falls Church that day, and on the way home he stopped at a gas station, where he heard about the big fire in Haymarket,” said Jane. “But he didn’t know that it was his house that had burned down until he got there.” At the time of the fire, Lee was with his grandmother at Kalarama, and became aware that something was burning east of the house. “We looked out the front door, and saw the smoke coming over the mountain,” he recalled.
This photograph, taken around 1910, shows the building (at far right) that was later used as the Haymarket telephone exchange. Partially visible at the extreme right is the east wall of what was once the Haymarket post office.
“We didn’t know what it was until the next day, when they told us that our house had burned down.” Finally, the fire was put out, but both buildings were a total loss. “When I saw what was left of the house, it was just a tin roof on top of a pile of debris, only about two feet high,” said Lee. According to the report in The Fauquier Democrat, efforts to fight the fire were also hampered by a lack of water, but remarkably, no mail was lost when the post office building burned. “All telephone and telegraph service out of Haymarket was completely disrupted, with the exception of a telephone in the residence of Dr. Wade C. Payne, which was connected by the C&P Telephone Co. with The Plains, and furnished the only outside telephone communication with the town.”
AFTERMATH
The Pearsons spent the night of the fire in the house owned by Henry Utterback in Haymarket (also known as the Hulfish House, and today the location of The Very Thing for Her), before moving into an apartment on the second floor of the Haymarket bank building the next day. According to Jane, they never entered the first floor of the old bank, but through the glass doors, they could see telephone equipment, wire and supplies stored there. Access to the second floor was through a door at ground level on the west side of the building. It wasn’t long before the telephone exchange was relocated to the bank building, and back in operation. Jane recalls that the switchboards and related equipment were in the rooms at the front of the bank, and the apartment in the rear. Setting off the town siren, which was located on the roof of the building, was the duty of the switchboard operators – or by the Pearson children, if they were home. “We blew the siren every day at noon,” Jane recalled. “And if there was a fire in town, it was blown one time, or if it was out-of-town, it was blown two times. We would fight over who got to blow the siren every day.” cut off continued on page 20

Lee remembers that his father planted a vegetable garden in the narrow space between the west side of the bank building and the street, where large bushes now grow. “He would raise tomatoes that were so big that one slice would fill a sandwich, ” recalled Lee. “Whatever we didn’t eat, he gave away or sold to the store.” Both Jane and Lee agree that it was ironic that the Haymarket Firehouse was built on the site of the lost telephone exchange the following year. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Pearson bought the old Tyler house on Jefferson Street above the railroad tracks from W.S. Melton. It was purchased “on time” for $1,000, with payments set at $20 a month. Jane still has a collection of receipts for the mortgage. The Tyler house has the distinction of being one of the three structures in Haymarket that wasn’t burned by Union troops in Nov. 1862.
Jane Pearson Brown and her brother Lee Pearson share a moment in front of the Old Bank Building in Haymarket, where they lived from 1945 to 1948.
In the early 1950s, Mr. and Mrs. Pearson bought the unused Haymarket depot for $100, with the requirement that it be removed from its site along the railroad tracks. “My Dad and I took our tools and tore it down, and we used the materials to build another house on Fayette Street,” noted Lee. “We used the big beams, the rafters, the flooring... even though it was a cinderblock house, it had a lot of wood from the depot in it.” What wasn’t used in the construction was cut up for firewood.
In 1955, the Pearsons built “the stone house” on Fayette Street, using materials salvaged from the old Haymarket depot. Visible behind the house is the old Tyler house, the first property the Pearsons owned after moving to Haymarket.
Completed in 1955, the house was veneered with stone, and is known by the family as “the stone house.” Once the work was completed, Clyde and Ella and their children moved into the stone house, and Mrs. Lunceford moved from Kalarama to the Tyler house, where she lived until her death in 1966. Both the Tyler house and the stone house are still owned by the family, and
are currently rented out. Lee notes that Jimmy O’Brien, a tenant who occupies one of the basement apartments, has lived there since 1968. “He started renting the placed from our Mom!” said Lee. Ella Pearson was active in Haymarket affairs, and served a term on the town council. She also acquired other properties in the town, which she rented. “If it had a door, she could make a rental unit out of it!” said Jane. After completing seventh grade at Haymarket Elementary School, the Pearson children made the long bus ride to Osbourn High School in Manassas. “There wasn’t a thing on Sudley Road back then, just a farm or two,” recalled Jane. After graduating in the 1950s, Jane joined her mother working for the U.S. Army at Vint Hill Farms Station. In 1958, she and Mosby Jackson “Jack” Brown were married at the Haymarket Baptist Church, and had their wedding reception at St. Paul’s Parish Hall. The newlyweds moved to Fairfax, where Jane started a 37-year career working for the U.S. Government. After retiring, Jack and Jane Brown returned to the area, and for the past nine-and-a-half years have lived in a new house built at Vint Hill. Today, Jane works part-time at the Long & Foster Real Estate office in Gainesville. Lee’s first job after high school was as a “blaster,” planting dynamite charges for two construction companies. He later served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force, and in the Air Force Reserve. He returned to Prince William County after his military duty, and set up a car rental business in Triangle, and began a successful career as a real estate investor in Prince William County, Fredericksburg and Suffolk. For the past 35 years, he has lived on Park Avenue in Manassas.

HAYMARKET WELCOMES FIRST NEWBORN
Juliana and Daniel, residents of Gainesville, VA, welcomed their new baby boy on March 27 at Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center just a day after the new facility opened. And the brand new hospital greeted its first newborn. At eight pounds, twelve ounces, their son Isaac was delivered at 10:24 a.m. by Dr. Eugene Louie-Ng of Novant Health Lake Manassas OB/ GYN with offices in Gainesville and South Riding. Baby Isaac claims the distinction of first baby born at Haymarket Medical Center. “We’re honored to play a part in welcoming our community’s newest residents,” said Don Sedgley, president of Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center. To celebrate the event, the family was presented with a large gift basket from the Novant Health Auxiliary filled with local goodies. “This is very exciting for staff,” says Dr. LouieNg. “To have the first baby born is a milestone for the new hospital, and we’re just happy to celebrate it.”
Haymarket Medical Center’s secure women’s and children’s unit houses seven labor and delivery rooms, 16 private post-partum rooms with personal miniature refrigerators and convertible sofa beds for overnight visitors, two dedicated C-section rooms, a well-baby nursery with 16 bassinets that is staffed by an experienced team of neonatologists and staff certified in neonatal resuscitation and neonatal resource nurses. Nurses’ care for both mother and baby using a family centered care nursing model. Breastfeeding support is provided by a lactation consultant, maternity tours are offered and education classes will be offered.
When asked how baby Isaac’s name was chosen Juliana said that Daniel liked the name, which means laughter and how it was originally going to be the name of their first born child until they found out they were having a girl [older sister Victoria]. A Golf Community Haymarket and Gainesville host a variety of challenging and fun golf courses by Jim Aram
Virginia Oaks Golf Club For my fellow golfers in the area, there’s no doubt that our clubs gathered a bit of extra dust after a winter for the ages in the Mid-Atlantic region. Thankfully, spring has arrived albeit a few weeks later than usual and it’s time to get out the sticks and give it a go at one of the many local golf courses. Before I go any further, let me preface the article by coming clean. While I enjoy the game of golf tremendously, I’m a high handicapper, a hacker, a duffer – but nonetheless end up playing a fair amount of golf with friends, business colleagues and in many charity tournaments throughout the season. I have yet to decipher all the intricacies of the game but do enjoy the occasional flash of brilliance on the course that keeps me coming back for another round. We’re extremely fortunate to have a variety of quality courses right in our backyard in Western Prince William County. With the exception of Robert Trent Jones I’ve been lucky enough to play them all a few times over years. My intent is to share my experiences from the perspective of a fan of the game – someone who enjoys an often tranquil (sometimes frustrating) afternoon on the links. I’m in no position to give tips on your swing – but my hope is if you haven’t taken advantage of some of the following courses - you’ll find a way to explore and expand your golf experiences locally. 24
VIRGINIA OAKS GOLF CLUB
Virginia Oaks Golf Club, located in Gainesville, is a P.B. Dye designed course that opened in 1995. It’s located in the Virginia Oaks Community and is open to the public with memberships available. The course winds its way through the community with many holes adjacent to the scenic Lake Manassas. While it has the lowest slope rating (measure of difficulty for bogey golfers like myself) of the courses in the area included in the article, I find the course somewhat challenging due to the many undulations on the course. These undulations are a common feature on P.B. Dye courses and can make a flat lie a rarity – meaning you’ll often be swinging with the ball below or above your feet, adding a variable to the flight and direction of the ball. Nonetheless, the course offers an enjoyable round of golf at a relatively good value. After your round you can sit on the patio, enjoy a cold beverage and watch golfers try to nail the green on Hole 9, an island like par 3, that of course you birdied during your round. Virginia Oaks Golf Club is part of the Capital Area Golf Membership and includes partnerships with seven other area courses in Metro DC including P.B. Dye, 1757 and Reston National to name a few. golf community continued on page 26 Haymarket Lifestyle

STONEWALL GOLF CLUB
Stonewall Golf Club is located slightly up the road from Virginia Oaks Golf Club. The course architect Tom Jackson designed this upscale daily fee public course that opened in 2001. Golf Magazine has rated Stonewall as one of the Top Public Courses you can play and I would have to agree it does not disappoint. The course also has many holes that offer spectacular views of Lake Manassas. The course’s slope rating is the most challenging of the courses in the area. Yet, I have experienced some of my most memorable shots at here. While I have yet to have the good fortune of a hole-in-one, I was lucky enough to achieve an eagle on Hole 15 from 110 yards out. We won’t talk about the rest of the scorecard that day or any other day for that matter, it was a glimpse of what is possible on the course despite my lack of golf acumen. Stonewall’s daily rate can be on the higher end but I would say definitely worth it and a nice treat. The club’s restaurant, The Brass Cannon is a nice place to grab a bite to eat before or after your round while enjoying golfers approach the scenic 18th green. Stonewall offers multiple levels of membership including a very reasonable membership in their Patriot Club that offers discounted greens fees and priority tee times.
BULL RUN GOLF CLUB
Bull Run Golf Club
The Bull Run Golf Club opened in 1990 and is set among 450 acres at the base of Bull Run Mountain in Haymarket. Course architect, Rick Jacobson designed the Bull Run with wide fairways and golfers in mind. The public course is part of the Raspberry Golf Trail & Management which operates several other courses in the area including Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, Old Hickory Golf Club and Augustine Golf Club. There are picturesque views and challenging holes found among the rolling hills of the course. Until the past few years the course was relatively free of housing but as the residential real estate market has picked up developer, Van Metre Homes, has been building estate style homes alongside the course. Thus, more care must be taken to hit your shots straight alas end up in someone’s backyard or worse inside their family room. The 18th hole is notable in that depending on the distance on your tee shot from an elevated green, you’ll be dared to carry a pond and make it on the green on your second shot – a dare I often attempt with limited success. All in all, I find Bull Run a very enjoyable round and one of the better values in the area as well.
ROBERT TRENT JONES GOLF CLUB
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is by far the crown jewel of courses in our area and the only course I have yet to have the pleasure of playing. Incidentally, I’m available for invites and will clear my schedule for a round at this pristine golf course. RTJ is an exclusive private club located in Gainesville and membership is by invitation only. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., who has built hundreds of courses around the world. He called one course “his masterpiece” and honored it with his name. The course opened in 1991 and caters to golf purists in that there are no swimming pools or tennis courts – just golf. It has since hosted several Presidents Cup matches, the most recent in 2005. I was lucky enough to attend in 2005 and caught my first in-person glimpse of Tiger Woods. Since then I’ve attended several business golf community continued on page 28

On one of those visits I walked through the locker room and gazed at the names engraved on the lockers to include several past U.S. Presidents, several professional golfers and Michael Jordan to name a few. The course is also on the shores of Lake Manassas and while playing next door at Stonewall Golf Club – I’ve observed a helicopter or two dropping off or picking up a foursome. The latest news surrounding RTJ is that it will be hosting the Quicken Loans National Tournament (formerly the AT&T National) in the summer of 2015. The tournament invites the top 120 PGA Tour Professionals worldwide to compete for their share of a $6.5 million dollar purse and is hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The event will no doubt bring much fanfare and excitement to the area early next summer and will be a must attend event for local golf fans.
EVERGREEN COUNTRY CLUB
The Evergreen Country Club’s roots run deep as far as local courses are concerned. The private course opened in 1968 at in the Evergreen Farm Subdivision in Haymarket. The course was designed by Algie Pulley to take advantage of the natural beauty of the site at the base of Bull Run Mountain. The course is the most mature in the area using wooded areas as hazards and channeling water from Bull Run Mountain into several creeks and ponds that come into play on eight of the holes on the course. The rolling hills and views
of the mountain make for a pleasant afternoon enjoying the many splendors of nature that can be found on a golf course. The club offers additional amenities to members including a swimming pool, tennis courts and the Berkeley Manor House dating back to 1827. This is course is the longest of the courses in the area and provides a challenging round of golf. A fire destroyed the original clubhouse in 1989 and temporary facilities were used until the new clubhouse was opened in the 90’s. The club offers memberships at several different levels and hosts a great fireworks display on the 4th of July.
HERITAGE HUNT GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
The course at Heritage Hunt opened in 2000 and is located behind the gate in the adult active Heritage Hunt Community in Gainesville. This Arthur Hills designed private club is currently managed by Billy Casper Golf. Of the courses in the area it is the shortest from the white tees, where high handicappers such as myself, should be teeing off from to maintain an adequate pace of play. The clubhouse has a beautiful colonial style and the course is set among 750 acres of rolling hills complete with streams, ponds and wetlands. The course is fun to play and kept in good condition. Since Billy Casper Golf has taken over management they offer some very competitive membership options from a Platinum, Silver and Hunt Club Memberships that make it very accessible despite billing itself as a private club. The course is also part of the Capital Area Golf Membership with Virginia Oaks and several other courses in the Metro DC region. golf community continued on page 30 Evergreen Country Club

Piedmont Country Club
PIEDMONT COUNTRY CLUB
The private Piedmont Club opened in 2001 in the Piedmont development located in Haymarket. The Tom Fazio designed course offers generous fairways and medium sized greens and winds its way among the development over rolling hills with views of the Virginia Piedmont. The course is player friendly yet challenging, especially as the season progresses and the grass alongside many of the fairways begins to lengthen and thicken. A misdirected shot to the right or the left may have you attempting to chop out of some pretty deep rough the likes you may have witnessed while watching The British Open. Recently, all the greenside bunkers have been reconditioned with new sand which is a nice touch – especially when a day on the course seems more like a day at the beach. The Piedmont Club is part of the Club Corp Family – which owns or operates a portfolio of more than 150 country clubs, business clubs, sports clubs and alumni clubs across the country and thus offers a wide variety of access to its members both locally and while traveling. Locally, your membership provides various access and benefits at The Tower Club in Tysons Corner, The City Club in Washington DC and The River Creek Club in Leesburg. Memberships are offered at several different levels and at very competitive pricing when you consider all that is included.
DOMINION VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB
The Dominon Valley Country Club is located in the Toll Brother’s community by the same name in Haymarket. The private Arnold Palmer designed course opened in 2003.
Arnold Palmer states “My basic philosophy of golf course design is straightforward. I try to design courses that are exciting and enjoyable for all players, but also respect and preserve the existing terrain.” The course at Dominion Valley does just that – it has wide fairways, strategically placed bunkers and greens that challenge golfers. The course plays through the community, along Little Bull Run Creek and around many natural preservation areas. I particularly enjoy the 9th hole, par 3, with an island green. Not only do you have the water to contend with but make note of the speed and direction of the wind before teeing off, otherwise you may find yourself playing from the drop zone on your next shot. The club offers different membership levels to residents of the community and offers a limited number of memberships to non-residents. Amenities the club offers in addition to golf include a swimming pool, tennis courts and a fitness center to name a few. There you have it. Our area has many quality courses for the local golf enthusiast. This list is no doubt incomplete and I’m sure I’ve left out some other great courses that are worthy. The benefit of having so many choices, many of which have been added in the past decade or two, is the competition. Clubs must keep their courses in good condition and whether it’s a single round or you’re considering a private club membership – there is plenty of value to be found. If you haven’t recently, I encourage you to dust off your clubs, grab a few friends and experience the great golf we’re fortunate to have at our doorstep in our community. Also, as a reminder if you ever need a fourth at RTJ, I’m available.
Jim Aram is the owner of Advantage Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation and currently lives in Haymarket. He’s an admitted hacker and recovering club thrower. Nonetheless, he enjoys the mental, physical and social aspects the game of golf has to offer. Someday he hopes to master the game but for now he simply enjoys the process and appreciates every opportunity to play a round.

Buy LOCAL
&Love It This time I am going to offer you a different angle on my yearly rant against ordering from plant catalogs. I really do love it when they all start showing up in my mailbox. Pages and pages of beautiful, healthy and perfect growing things: flowers and shrubs and vegetables and trees, promising me that there will be another growing season. I like discovering what’s new, what the hybridizers have been working on, what I might want to look for and plant this year. Then I get frustrated and angry. Sometimes the pictures are not accurate in their depiction of colors or bloom mass. Sometimes the descriptions are so inaccurate that I have to check the plant name again to make sure I am reading the right one. Sometimes they leave out important information like how much deer enjoy eating a particular plant, or how one plant might cover your whole garden in two years, or how only an expert with lots of free time could possibly get this plant to establish and grow. That is why I read the catalogs but I buy my plants at our local garden stores. I have researched three favorites and I will share with you why I love them.
The Farm at Broad Run 34
Meadows Farms is the oldest and has the most locations. In 1960, Farmer Meadows was a High School Coach making summer money by selling tomatoes door to door out of a red wagon. With hard work, a good product and good prices, he grew from the wagon to a roadside market. By the mid 60’s he added plants to the vegetables. In 1972 he opened the first full time nursery in
by Lynn Galluzzo
Sterling, now there are 22 locations including a landscaping division and an imaginative golf course. Seasonally, Meadows Farms employs about 2,500 people with 600 to 700 year round, full time jobs. When I asked Ron Meadows what he thought made Meadows Farms special he said, “Selection, quality and price.” I agree. I shop at a few locations, thankfully Prince William County has two locations (Manassas and Woodbridge), and I can usually find everything on my list or a good substitute. It is a manageable size, well laid out and someone is always available to push a cart heavy with plants and help me load my truck. The prices are fair and their specials are good. My guilty pleasure at this Meadows location is walking through the Stone Center. They have rocks that I never knew existed. There are decorative rocks in all sorts of colors and sizes, rock stepping stones in a variety of colors, giant boulders, river rock and manufactured pavers. I can select the perfect piece for my purpose, one or several, pay for it, and get help loading. When I lived in Centreville I went to the Merrifields location on 29 as often as possible. When we moved to Haymarket that location was too far away to be time efficient for my business. You can only imagine my joy when I learned they were opening in Gainesville. I was so excited that I started going there when it was just a trailer, a few plants and some bags buy local continued on page 36 Haymarket Lifestyle

of mulch. It has grown into such an amazing place. I was so overwhelmed on my first visit that I left with just one little annual. I was like Robin Williams in the movie Moscow On Hudson when he goes to an American supermarket for the first time and is paralyzed by choice. All of this began April 9, 1971 when Bob Warhurst and Buddy Williams opened the Gallows Road store on a half acre of land. They grew, bought, grew, rented, grew and bought some more until that original store occupies over 9 acres in the heart of Fairfax. In the late 80’s, early 90’s they expanded to the store near Centreville on Route 29 and then recently to the Gainesville store on Wellington Road. They have a wide variety of plant material and sales staff who know and love plants. Kevin Warhurst told me that quality is so important to them that their buyers go to growers all over the country and personally tag items for Merrifields. One of the things that I value the most about Merrifields is the Help Desk. I have asked questions about pruning and weed control. I have brought in cuttings for identification and diseased cuttings for analysis. They never make me feel stupid and I always leave with an answer or solution that works. That to me is invaluable. They also offer free seminars on an interesting variety of topics. Merrifields boosts the region’s economy by employing 700 people in season and 320 year round.
In contrast to these big, multi location garden stores, The Farm at Broad Run is as small and personal as you can get. The single, retail location on Route 55 is like Cheers – everybody knows your name. In 1992 the owner, Bill Dewitt, started with a landscape company. By 1998 he had expanded to wholesale plant sales. In 2007 The Farm opened its retail store and in 2008 welcomed Thomas Buckley Jr. who became the manager. Buckley has worked to create a well organized, well stocked, friendly and fun place to visit. The homegrown produce, eggs and organic meats are so popular that sometimes I have to put my name on a waitlist. My family counts on a “Farm Turkey” for Thanksgiving every year. The Pavilion is a popular party rental for events ranging from business parties to weddings. Families enjoy stopping by to visit because they can feed the farm animals while stocking up on plants. Birthday parties and school classes are all given fun projects and special attention. For a small location the plant choices are varied and interesting. They are well cared for and the prices are great. Thomas and his staff have years of experience with plants and are very helpful with suggestions of what would be the right thing for the right place. Two new employees have come out of retirement from Meadowlark Gardens. Thomas says future plans include reestablishing the wholesale business, offering more hardscape installation, increasing
Merrifield Garden Center
the use of the pavilion and offering monthly classes. Right now The Farm at Broad Run has 300 seasonal workers and 30 year round people and it sounds like that will be increasing. I love and frequent all three of these places. Their unique differences make each one special to me and a destination for specific reasons. They all have wonderful staff that try very hard to help me with anything I need. I have fantasized about quitting the pressures of running The Garden Lady and working at each of them although I strongly suspect I would never bring home a paycheck. How could I spend all day working among all of those great plants and not want to take all of them home? Although I am usually on a mission to find plants for one or more jobs I almost always spend additional time walking around, seeing what is new, what is blooming, and learning more by reading descriptions and talking with sales people. When I do select plants I enjoy and value the process of choosing my own instead of having a faceless catalog worker make the choice for me. Buy local. Its way more fun and the plants will be stronger, cheaper and far more likely to thrive in our area. A short note on the benefits of the cold snowy winter – it has killed or seriously depleted several species of harmful bugs and nourished many of our native trees that struggled with the warmer winters.
Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz.

So you’re thinking, ‘Great! Fewer bees to scare me or sting me!’ While this is true it is harmful for our food supply. Bees are pollinators and they are needed for approximately 90% of flowering plants and crops that we consume. Crops like apples, grapes, peaches, pears, cucumbers, broccoli, carrots, soybeans and many types of melons just to name a few. For example, the pesticide poisoning of bees can result in a loss of 14 million dollars worth of crops annually. That’s a major loss in produce and profit.
MAKE YOUR GARDEN THE BEE’S KNEES!
Spring has sprung and you have probably already started growing your home garden. There is one key component to vegetable, fruit and flower gardens that you probably don’t think about - bees. Home gardens can only be successful with the help of bees. I hear from clients “I don’t want to attract bees” mostly for the fear of children getting stung, but really bees are an important part of a healthy garden. We need not fear them, we need to work to create a safe place for both the bees and our families. Since 2006, Beekeepers have reported a substantial decline in bees returning to their colonies. Nearly onethird of colonies in the United States have vanished. This decline has been coined the “Colony Collapse Disorder” which has been created through pesticide poisoning, invasive parasites and inadequate food supplies.
Many of the bees that we fear will sting actually don’t; interestingly only half of the bees in the world are capable of stinging. Contrary to what many think, bees aren’t flying around looking for a new victim. Although, in regards to those that do sting there are a few things garden owners can do to prevent being stung: • • • • •
Be mindful of their nests (including the ground and trees) Respect their space Avoid dark clothing Don’t use perfume Refrain from quick movements
In addition to being tolerant of bees, gardeners can also provide a healthy environment for them. It is important to plant a variety of flowers that will bloom at different times of the year to keep the bees active. Bees are buzzing around from April through November so offering a diverse set of plants will keep them coming back. Bees are most attracted to yellow, purple, orange, white and blue as well as sweet fragrances. As any gardener

should know native species are the best because the pollinators are already adapted to their offerings. It is suggested to plant in large areas with an assortment to create an abundance of pollen and nectar. Make the bees happy by planting: Asters, Black-eyed Susan, Joe Pye Weed, Penstemon, Purple Coneflower, Goldenrod, Zinnias and Basil. Please try to avoid using insecticides, but if you must spray in the late afternoon close to dark because the bees are less active. In order to be productive with your garden you’ll need to encourage bee activity… go ahead and get busy like the bees.

CONFIDENCE HOW DOES YOUR YOUNG ATHLETE GET IT? by Colby Schreckengost
I have been very fortunate to have coached a lot of athletes in my 23 years as a strength and conditioning coach. The longer I’m in it, the more I believe that confidence is the key to having success in anything you do. This is not a revelation by any means. Coaches and sports psychologists have been talking and writing about it for a long time. But what does it really mean to your young athlete and how do they get it? So I went to my trusty online Webster’s dictionary to find a short and sweet definition of the word confidence: a feeling or belief that you can do something or succeed at something. You hear it all the time in all levels of sports. Confidence is the number one factor in determining the success or failure of all athletes and teams. Said one commentator as I watched last weekend’s telecast on the golf channel, “Tiger Wood’s personal setbacks and injuries have caused him to lose confidence and he’s struggling to win these golf tournaments that he used to dominate.” In the NCAA Basketball tournament that just finished, teams that were hot and had a high field goal percentage heading into the NCAA 40
tournament had a distinct advantage because their high shooting percentage allows them to play more aggressive on the defensive end of the court. They’re confident that if they make a mistake and give up a basket or two, they can come back and score again. I recently spoke to the parent of a 13 year-old soccer athlete that had just finished a 10-week athlete training programs. I asked how his season was going and the father responded “Jack is so much more confident this season. He’s running stronger and not getting knocked off the ball like he did last year.” But he didn’t start out that way. He started out like most athletes; unsure of himself, new to the discipline of strength training; his mindset of giving great effort on every repetition of the linear and lateral movement drills was not where it needed to be. You see, training is progressive. You must learn to walk before you run; you must be able to do a static lunge before a walking lunge or a jump lunge. Exposure is a term that I like to use with our young athletes. Don’t try to teach them too much at the beginning. Show them the drill or exercise. Then let them have a few exposures to it
before shouting corrections and getting them thinking too much. The idea being that with proper coaching cues, the athlete will reach a certain level of proficiency and then we can challenge them even more. Evaluation should be constant. More often than not, the majority of the athletes won’t “get it” with the first or second exposure. Sometimes you have to be willing to take a few steps back and apply what we call regressions, just until the group or the athlete is competent with the task. I believe there is an art and a science to coaching. The science is doing the research and understanding which drills and exercises to do while training athletes. The art is being able to apply the science at the correct time and utilize the correct motivational tools to get the result that you want. Gaining confidence on the playing field is one outcome, but I think this new found confidence spills over into other aspects of our young athlete’s lives. classroom because they become unafraid to ask questions. They no longer have to be the “cool kid” in class and sit in the back of the room. If they become more engaged in the classroom most likely they will learn more and have more academic success.
•
Social Confidence: It’s tough being a teen trying to negotiate their way through the awkward social situations as well as pressures of dating, parties, alcohol and drugs. A confident kid gains self-assurance that gives them the courage to ask for a date or to confidently avoid peer pressures to do something they know is wrong. Sure there are plenty of outwardly confident athletes and non-athletes that get side tracked and fail to reach their full potential. These type of athletes tend to be overly confident on the outside because their natural athletic ability has always pushed them ahead of their peers, but inside they do not truly believe in themselves and are not willing to put in the work that gives them the confidence they need. These individuals tend to fail in the classroom, get caught up in the wrong crowd and spiraling out of control. It’s not always about having success early in games or hitting the game winning shot to win a championship. In my opinion, the most important way to achieve confidence comes from the work you put in. Grinding through every workout, every practice, and every study period for the most
challenging of classes. It’s the everyday process of making yourself better. As one of my mentor’s always says: “If you make yourself 1% better every day for 50 days, at the end of those 50 days, you’ll be 50% better.” Pretty powerful stuff right? Unfortunately, the mindset of many coaches is to go crazy writing workouts that beat up their athletes because that’s how they were treated back in the day. As a designer of training programs for all levels of athletes, we emphasize the following Confidence Building Training Factors. If your goal is to drive confidence in a young athlete, each of these factors needs to be addressed: • • • • • • • • • • •
Discipline: Be on time and conduct yourself in a respectful manner Attitude: Come ready to focus on getting better Mindset: Learn proper preparation and recovery strategies Leadership: Outworking people is the best form leadership Team Player: Be able to thrive in a group or team environment Get Stronger: Nothing builds confidence like getting stronger Speed Development: Focus on ground force production Power Development: It’s not about repetitions but energy output Movement Skills: Learn to move with efficiency Flexibility: Why? Injury prevention strategies Nutrition: Learn daily strategies that will aid in recovery
Fun: Learn to enjoy movement and training like an athlete Work Ethic: Grind it out! Every training session is an opportunity to get better
If an athlete continues to work through the process in all phases of training, the confidence will come. But, they have to learn to enjoy the process or they’ll come up short in the success and confidence categories. We’ve all seen the stories of the walkon collegiate athlete that works his or her butt off to become a starter, earn a scholarship and eventually get drafted into the professional ranks. Usually, the most important point gets lost, like how the athlete overcame adversity, grinded out the workouts, and got pushed to the back of the line until someone got injured and they made the most of their chances. That type of confidence is earned and doesn’t happen overnight. Athletes have to learn to enjoy the process of getting better every day until that one day when the coach says, “Okay kid, get in there and let’s see what you got!” The grinder has built the inner confidence to take advantage of the opportunity. The fact is, no matter how old you are, or what athletic goals you are trying to obtain, confidence will always be the key ingredient to your success. You are not born with it, you must earn it through grinding it out every day, every training session, that’s what creates confidence……..and opportunities.

Finding the Right Solution for Relationship Woes EVALUATING THE OPTIONS IN COUPLES THERAPY, RELATIONSHIP COACHING AND MARRIAGE EDUCATION
by Esther Boykin, LMFT
Once upon a time couples counseling was reserved for the seriously distressed couple. It was something that couples would slip away to do without telling friends or family. Thankfully times have changed and the role of couples therapy and the many forms that it can take has become a comfortable part of our culture. While we have not fully shed our cultural ambivalence about therapy in general, there is an increasing acceptance that therapy, counseling, coaching or whatever you choose to call it is a valuable resource that many of us can benefit from. It is this shift in our collective consciousness that has made many people more comfortable talking about how these services have helped them.
From Robert Downey Jr. to Kourtney Kardashian and even Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, more and more high profile people are sharing the value of having professional advisors in their lives. And so we are now faced with the challenge of navigating through the myriad of “helpers” to find the one that’s right for us. For couples, this can be a daunting task. Whether you are facing specific issues in your relationship, simply want to work on general communication skills, or something in between; finding the right helping professional for your relationship can be a challenge. Below are the most common forms of couples help and some tips on how to figure out which one may be right for you.
COUPLES THERAPY The most universal option, couples therapy or couples counseling can take a variety of forms and theoretical perspectives. Because of this couples therapy is a suitable option for a couple seeking premarital guidance just as much as it can be effective for a couple on the verge of divorce. The most crucial key here is to find a therapist who is trained and experienced in working with couples and relationships and comfortable working with your issue. A good couples therapist has the skills to help you enhance your relationship as well as to identify major areas of concern. I like to compare couples therapists, particularly marriage and family therapists to a good all around mechanic. You can take your right solution continued on page 46

car (relationship) in for an oil change every so often and should anything major breakdown they can help with that too. Of course if you are past the maintenance stage and in need of serious intervention this is also the person to call. Complex issues such as addiction, infidelity or extremely volatile conflict should be taken to a couples therapist, preferably one experienced in dealing with such concerns. RELATIONSHIP COACHING Coaching is sort of the new kid on the block in terms of relationship support professionals. The field has grown out of executive coaching which is designed to help professionals develop plans, implement change, stay motivated and when necessary deal with crises effectively. Relationship coaching works with couples in much the same way- helping to identify strengths and weaknesses, create and implement plans to move forward toward their goals. Whether you are dating or married a relationship coach can help you work on very specific skills in a personalized way. As they learn about you and your partner, a coach can help you work together to make the changes or improve the skills that matter most to you. Although often similar to couples counseling, relationship coaching does not require the licensing or educational credentials of counseling and thus is not well-suited to work with understanding issues such as how your family of origin impacts your relationship or the effects of mental illness on both partners. MARRIAGE/RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION For couples unsure about enlisting the help of a professional, marriage (or relationship) education can be an excellent place to start. Based on psycho-education (i.e. education about psychological or emotional issues), these programs teach couples many of the skills that help
relationships do better. Communication, effective conflict resolution, and even some aspects of intimacy can be taught in these classroom style programs. The range of marriage education courses can be overwhelming and it is useful to do a little research to find a program and an instructor that meets your personal style. Some of these programs are very experiential asking you to role play and be actively involved in the process and others follow a more traditional teaching format with presentations, handouts, and even homework to practice skills. Whatever its specific format, relationship education is based on the premise that couples can learn to love each other more effectively or at least develop some of the crucial skills necessary to make their relationship more fulfilling. COUPLES RETREATS, GROUPS AND WORKSHOPS Retreats, groups and other configurations are often just a variation of one of the three categories above. When exploring these options the same tips can be applied once you find out what kind of perspective the facilitator is working from (e.g. counseling, coaching, psycho-education). The main difference to keep in mind is that these are group-based settings. Groups can offer a powerful experience for its participants as you learn from the person leading the group as well as the other group members. Many times people find that although they were hesitant about sharing at first, the group offers a wider range of perspectives and useful insights than they could have found in a one-on-one situation. However group also means that you have to become comfortable sharing personal details of your relationship and your feelings with many people. In all these settings confidentiality should be a required component of participation, but if privacy or sharing in front of others is an issue for you, it may be better to choose an individual approach.

Taste New York & Italy PIZZA NY MARGHERITA
Owned by brothers Joe and Marco D’Agostino, Pizza NY Margherita is a comfortable, casual place where the customers are known by name. With natural light streaming in from the two walls of windows lining the restaurant, the simplistic, cleanly decorated space lends itself to families and couples enjoying wonderful Italian food, not limited to just their delicious pizza. There are television screens placed unobtrusively around the room where visitors can gather around to talk about sports or recent news. The smell of garlic pervades the air and convinces you to order the garlic knots that are displayed near the register next to the array of pizzas and calzones of all different flavors and toppings. Pizza NY Margherita’s menu consists of New York as well as brick oven pizzas with many different choices of toppings. Hot oven specialties include Italian classics like pepperoni rolls, stromboli and calzones; and there are fresh salads to choose from that are full of flavor. But perhaps the most delightful items on the menu are the desserts. There are cannolis, cakes, and a colorful assortment of gelato on display at the front of the store. Owning a pizza restaurant runs in the D’Agostino family. Joe and Marco’s parents are John and Margaret, owners of Tony’s NY Pizza in Fairfax. John D’Agostino had attended culinary school in Italy and worked as a chef on cruise ships before moving to NY and learning how to cook authentic New York pizza. When they moved to Virginia, with John working hard behind the scenes and Margaret being the face of the business and the “people
The staff at Pizza NY Margherita stand with owner Joe D’Agostino (blue shirt) for a picture; together the team creates some of the tastiest pizzas in the community. person,” the couple opened their restaurant in the Fair Lakes shopping center. The passion for cooking was passed on to their children. Five years ago, Pizza NY Margherita made its debut as the place to go for NY pizza in Gainesville. The name of the restaurant was based on the story from 1889 as the King of Italy and his wife, Queen Margherita di Savoia visited Naples, Italy on vacation and the Queen fell in love with the pizza made with mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes for the colors of the Italian flag. The chef dedicated the pizza to her by naming it Pizza Margherita. As the D’Agostino family comes from Naples, this story had special significance to them. Being involved in the community is something that is important to the
owners of Pizza NY Margherita. Joe and Marco D’Agostino are proud to sponsor sports teams and host fundraisers for local schools. They want their restaurant to be a place where families and friends gather together to enjoy great food and have a great time. Pizza Margherita is located at 5115 Wellington Road in the Virginia Gateway Center near Massage Envy and Buffalo Wild Wings. The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 11:00am to 11:00pm with daily lunch specials on weekdays from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Delivery is also now available. Catering can be arranged by calling the restaurant. For more information, go to Pizzanymargherita.com, visit their facebook page, or call (703) 753-0744.

QUATTRO GOOMBA’S WINERY Oh the Taste of a Local Wine! Most families have that one relative who has attempted to make wine in the basement with varying degrees of success. At least half of the Quattro Goombas (“Four Good Friends”) can tell that story and how successful those attempts were, leading to the founding of the Quattro Goomba’s Winery in Aldie. The “goombas” are Jay and Jody DeCianno and David and Carole Camden. Jay DeCianno’s Italian grandfather was his inspiration, spawning a hobby that followed him and his family through several states over the years before settling in South Riding about 10 years ago. Making wine in the DeCianno’s basement caught the attention of neighbor Carole Camden, whose family has a rich history of making communion wines for churches in central Virginia. The hobby outgrew the DeCiannos’ basement, necessitating the move to a dedicated facility on vacant property
in 2008. Opening in 2009, the winery became full-time following winemaker Jay DeCianno’s layoff from the Defense industry. DeCianno and his wife, Jody, run the winery while David and Carole Camden provide behind the scenes support for this family oriented, “blue collar” winery. This small winery makes wine with a Mediterranean flair, using grapes from all over the world, as well as from Virginia. The Sorelle is notable for being a dry Riesling that pairs with a variety of poultry and seafood dishes. The red Tradizione (from a secret family recipe), aged in Bourbon barrels, can be served chilled. The vanilla finish is exceptional. And ask Jody for her Spinach Salad dressing recipe using the Vino Dolce dessert wine! Wine slushies and pizza are big draws, as is music on the weekends. Picnics, kids and dogs are encouraged.
