Care

JUMP

Don’t this Winter Vehicle Battery Maintenance

A battery can last four to five years with proper care, but today’s vehicle computer systems create a small but constant drain on batteries, even when the vehicle is parked or in long sitting periods. Therefore, checking the battery should be included as part of the routine vehicle maintenance.

Turn-Off Electric Devices in the Car: All devices should be turned off when the vehicle is not in use, since some electrical devices may remain on and can discharge the battery by the morning.

The Car Care Council advises vehicle owners have their cars’ batteries tested periodically. Whether the driver or the auto technician tests the battery, a hand held battery tester only takes a minute or two to check the battery’s performance. Batteries typically do not go bad overnight and frequently checking the batteries performance will indicate if a battery isn’t putting out the amount of amperage that it should. Testing the battery should be performed every time a vehicle is brought in for service, approximately every 7,500 miles.

Consider Disconnecting the Battery or Connecting it to a Trickle Charger if not Using the Vehicle: If the car is not going to be used for a sometime, disconnect the battery from the car and remove it from the car altogether. Or, use a trickle charger that is made to keep a battery at a constant level of charge when not in use for long periods. This ensures that the battery will not get discharged when the vehicle is not used. Also, allowing a normal car battery to fully-discharge repeatedly may reduce the battery’s life span.

Here are a few tips on taking care of the battery; they may help to increase the battery’s life: Protect from Temperature Extremes: Extreme temperatures are one of the biggest factors in determining the average life of the battery. In regions with extremely cold temperatures, consider using a thermal blanket or electric battery blanket which serves as a battery heater. Regular Maintenance: Keep corrosion under control by using baking soda and distilled water (tap water reduces the battery’s potential.) Use an old toothbrush to remove corrosion and build-up from the battery posts and cables. Make sure cables are tightly fastened so that they do not move. Constant Charge Levels: We recommend testing the battery frequently to ensure it holds a constant 12.5 to 13 volts. Performing a load test will ensure the voltage does not drop below 10.5 volts.

Many battery cases have a decal stating its expected life, typically 60 or 84 months. If it’s near the end of its expected service life, replace it. Battery maintenance will ensure there will never be a situation when the car will not start. A final few hints battery replacement may be needed: • The starter takes a while to crank the car and the key has to be held in the start position before the engine starts. • In some vehicles, a battery annunciator light on the dashboard will illuminate when the battery is beginning to fail. • The headlights are dim at idle but brighten when the engine is revved.

p Revvin’ U Robotics ILITE Robotics Team at Battlefield High School The Inspiring Leaders In Technology & Engineering (ILITE) Robotics Team at Battlefield High School made their debut in 2005 as Haymarket’s only competitive science and technology team. By 2006, just one year after their emergence, they received three Rookie All Star Awards while competing under FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science

and Technology), a not-forprofit organization with a mission to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology. This organization sets the standard for orderly competitions that build science, technology and engineering skills among young people that will inspire and develop life skills including confidence, communication and leadership. ILITE is led by Professor Gail

Drake an industry professional who left to personally encourage students to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). With her guidance and enthusiasm ILITE has become a recognized name, a fierce competitor and a decorated program.

Students learn the concept of touch sensors and color recognition initially. They build mazes and color routes that challenge their simple robots to detect different hues and follow particular colors especially when they intersect or turn. These abilities provide the foundation for more intricate mechanisms within larger, more complex robots as they build on their basic programming, teamwork and build skills.

“The ultimate goal is to learn that programming is so much fun,” Professor Drake explains her reasoning for teaching students using hands-on application in a nontraditional classroom setting.

in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), an organization designed to encourage children to like technology and science through the building and programming of an autonomous robot using the LEGO MINDSTORM robot set. Each team is comprised of a maximum of 10 students and at least one adult, but ILITE members have been volunteering their time and knowledge locally. Their interaction with over 600 children has helped initiate an increased interest in robotics in our area. Mentors are currently working with FLL area teams on the annual project, with the mission and research geared towards senior citizens. This year ‘Senior Solutions,’ as named by the FLL, is motivating teams to research problems associated with senior citizens and create a solution to that problem by developing a product.

Aaron Guo, a youth mentor and ILITE team member, is helping his FLL team build Team members of ILITE take their knowledge and excitement a robot with a video chat component that will follow the for robotics to middle and senior around. “It’s especially elementary school aged for those seniors who would children. Through after school like to stay connected with activities, they inspire future family members who are not engineers and programmers to necessarily in the area,” Guo become involved. is trying to find a way that technology can help aid the aging process. On November 17th Battlefield High School will host the Regional FLL Competition 1 and 2 making it the only location in the nation to host two events in one day. It is anticipated that over 500 elementary and middle school students will be featuring their robots in competition. ILITE also reaches out to the community through fundraising activities and awareness at local events. Annually they make an appearance at Pumpkin Pandemonium where they host a robotics obstacle course for children. Obstacles and a projected path are created and two square-bots (14”x10” November 2012

“It’s to inspire other kids to want to be able to do things – that’s really all we do,” Professor Drake said. “And the line doesn’t stop all day long to drive robots. They’ll also have underwater robots and the pool for them to drive.” Each September ILITE anxiously waits for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) to release the competitive game for the season. school students to compete in head to head competition using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building and programming their robots to complete on a 12’x12’ field. This year the team will compete against 18 countries and 3,500 teams in the game called ‘Ring It Up.’ ILITE will be developing and building a robot that will remove rings from pegs on the outside of the field and place them on a rack at various levels in the center of the field.

Once the problems are solved and the strategy is initiated it takes a little over two weeks to build the robot. This year ILITE would like to enter two robots in FTC, which would mean they will have two teams. At this point they are unsure of how they would like to divide themselves into teams.

“This years game has rings that you have to pick up off of side racks and place on this middle rack,” team members Justin Shaw and Garrett Ormond explained. “It’s a much more complicated game of actually having hand manipulators to be able to do this.”

“They are so engaged in solving the problems that they have learned how to get along entirely different,” Professor Drake said. By working in a large group they have developed respect for one another through the problem solving process, and collectively they can take those solutions and move forward.

They have until December when competitions start to collaborate, prototype, create a drive train and build the robot.

Professor Drake asked the class as a whole, “Why don’t you know what you want to do?” There was a faint mumble from the class “because we love each other too much.”

FTC isn’t the only game they play, ILITE also builds and “They use a true engineering competes in FIRST Robotics process,” Professor Drake Competition (FRC), this said while explaining their sport mixes the excitement of development strategy. “They science and technology. With tear the game apart for how strict rules, limited resources, [to] win mathematically: they time limits and teams of 25 document different ways to win, students or more, they are they put that aside and list all of challenged to raise funds, the engineering problems that design a team brand, build have to be solved, then they and program a robot as well figure out which ones they can as collaborative skills. FRC game that presented challenges like multiple baskets at various heights and a seesaw component used to switch halves.

achieved those goals and even earned scholarships or jobs at large technology based firms through their fun, yet hard work with Battlefield Robotics.

Last year working together paid off big time, ILITE Robotics rocked the Regional and State competitions for both FTC and FRC.

ILITE will be hosting three events in November at Battlefield High School. On November 10th doors open at 7:30am to welcome IROC (ILITE ROBOTICS OFFSEASON CHALLENGE) competitors and spectators. This is an off-season competition, which is a great way to recruit students, mentors or fans into the robot world. On November 13th they will be holding an open house for anyone interested learning more about the program. “Senior Solutions” the 2012 Haymarket FLL Regional competition will take place on November 17th, 48 teams will compete for the title and the right to move on to States.

“We’ve got laid-out strategies,” Professor Drake mentioned about their plan for competition. “We only play to win the Region - we don’t pull it out. I won’t let them do things in qualification matches, not until the finals or unless we needed it to win the match -we don’t show another team what we were capable of.” It worked. They dominated the Regional and the State for FTC taking home first place in both competitions, while the FRC team received the Engineering Inspiration Award and the Chairman’s Award. Both teams qualified for the FIRST 2012 Championship, which was comprised of four World Championship competitions held in Saint Louis, Missouri. There both teams were remarkably successful, the FRC team finished as a quarter finalist and the FTC team brought back the FIRST TECH Challenge World Championship. Many students in the ILITE program have dreams of attending technology and engineering focused universities like Virginia Tech. Some have

“Both events are truly amazing,” Professor Drake exclaimed. “[It] is beautiful how this community has embraced Robotics. They truly love it, and it is with the support of the community on academic celebrations that we can bring back a focus on STEM.” All events are free, so spend the day with family or friend supporting ILITE. Sponsorships and volunteer positions are available and necessary to keep this successful team running, if you’d like to get involved or make a donation please visit their website at www.first1885. org. ILITE team members wait to compete.

Fauquier Health Diabetes 1.5, Explained Everybody knows there are two types of diabetes – Type 1 (juvenile onset), that affects children and Type 2 (adult onset), that develops later. Lida Tabatabaeian, M.D., of Fauquier Health Endocrinology, explains these two major types of diabetes have been defined by their underlying metabolic problems. Lida Tabatabaeian, M.D. Fauquier Health Endocrinology 550 Hospital Drive Warrenton, VA 20186 540-316-5940

But hold on, it’s not that simple. Dr. Tabatabaeian says that there is a third classification for patients who don’t fit neatly into either category. Getting to Know Type 1 Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic cells. As a result of this breakdown, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. In fact, certain autoantibodies are present that resist the production of insulin. This type of diabetes most often develops in children, and the patient requires insulin treatment for survival. A Look into Type 2 Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance and pancreatic dysfunction; it is considered a lifestyle disease and usually develops in adults – although it is now occurring with alarming frequency in children. With Type 2, there are no signs of autoimmune disease, and it usually does not require insulin in its early stages. A Combination of the Two Here’s where it gets more complicated. Dr. Tabatabaeian says that the medical professionals who study and treat diabetes noticed that among the people who do not require insulin at diagnosis most of whom

were assumed to have Type 2 diabetes – a significant number showed autoantibodies. These patients were treated initially with diet therapy and oral medicines like people with Type 2 diabetes, but they also had an ongoing autoimmune process like people with Type 1 diabetes. The term “latent autoimmune diabetes of adults” (LADA) was applied to these patients. It was originally called slow-progressing Type 1 diabetes, but now clinicians prefer the term Type 1.5 diabetes, because it has features of both the major types. People with Type 1.5 diabetes are said to have “double diabetes” because they show both the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic cells of Type 1 diabetes and the insulin resistance characteristic of Type 2 diabetes. People with Type 1.5 have autoantibodies and gradually lose their insulin-producing capability, requiring insulin within five to 10 years of diagnosis. As their insulin resistance suggests, many

people with Type 1.5 diabetes are obese or overweight. If you would like to learn more about diabetes and how to manage it, call 540316-2652 or email diabetes@fauquierhealth. org to find out about diabetes selfmanagement training classes at the Fauquier Wellness Center. A diabetes support group usually meets at the Wellness Center, from 6-7 p.m., on the second Thursday of every other month. However, the next meeting will be held in Fauquier Hospital’s Sycamore Room, on Thursday, November 8.

Talk with Someone Who Knows John Anderson, cyclist and marathon runner, will speak from personal experience on Balancing Diabetes and Exercise. The talk will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, November 8, in Fauquier Hospital’s Sycamore Room.

Kick off the Season at Fauquier Hospital’s Holiday Fair Fauquier Hospital will hold its annual Holiday Fair on Friday, November 16 in the second floor conference area and the Bistro on the Hill. History

‘We were always on the move’

World War II veteran describes his experiences in North Africa and Europe by John T. Toler

Because of his background and specialized training, World War II veteran Joseph D’Andrea was not involved in direct combat while serving in North Africa and Europe. But what he experienced provides valuable insights into what our young soldiers endured, and the scope of the massive military effort as Allied forces closed in on Germany. Now a retired stockbroker living in Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, Mr. D’Andrea was born in Bronx, N.Y., and grew up on Long Island. Just 18 when Pearl Harbor was attacked, he graduated from high school and worked for a year as a technician at the Sperry Gyroscope Corporation plant on Long Island, building and testing aircraft bomb sights and compasses. This experience would have a direct effect on his future. Ready to serve, Mr. D’Andrea attempted to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps and serve on a ground crew, but was drafted into the Regular Army and inducted at Ft. Dix, N.J. Because of his technical background, he was pulled from larger group of draftees headed for the Infantry. Following basic training, he was sent to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where he received additional training (MOS) as an Instrument Repairman. His primary duty was to work on the Army’s M-1 anti-aircraft director, which was “… as big as a refrigerator, and operated three 90mm guns,” he noted. Upon completion of his army training, he was promoted to the rank of corporal. Ordered to report for overseas duty, Cpl. D’Andrea headed for Norfolk, Va., on a Baltimore and Ohio troop train with blacked-out windows. When the troops arrived in Norfolk, they were placed in a windowless outdoor pavilion. “Norfolk at that time was loaded with Nazi spies,” who would report on any troop or ship movements, he recalled. Before embarking, Army officials passed out a training manual dealing with “the habits and culture of the English people,” ostensibly to prepare them for duty in the United Kingdom. However, this proved to be a ruse, in order to deceive the German spies. Just prior to leaving for overseas duty, Cpl. Joe D’Andrea posed for a photo with his younger brother, John. 14

On to the European Theater Cpl. D’Andrea crossed the Atlantic in a convoy of twelve troop ships, constantly on the lookout for lurking German U-Boats. “The lead ship would blow its whistle, and the rest of the convoy would change direction, zigzagging,” he recalled. “We were mostly seasick, living on saltine crackers.” As they neared the end of the 10-day voyage, one of his comrades pointed to the horizon, and asked, “Joe, what’s that out there?” It was the Rock of Gibraltar, not the coast of England – the true destination was Mers El Keber, Tunisia, in North Africa. Reaching the Mediterranean Sea, Cpl. D’Andrea witnessed a rare sight: the French battleship Lorraine, which had been taken out of the country by the Free French, and would continue to fight the Nazis until the end of the war. Once in North Africa, Cpl. D’Andrea was assigned to a Replacement Company, “Where you could be assigned to any Army branch that needed you,” he explained. Later, Cpl. D’Andrea became part of the 6118th Technical Supervision Regiment. “That was easy stuff, but it was hot.” His unit moved from North Africa to Italy, where they served as a back-up force. “The biggest danger I faced there was traveling in a Dodge 6x6 (tactical truck) on the narrow mountain roads, which had no guardrails,” he recalled. In Naples, he noticed a ship carrying soldiers from Brazil. “They were wearing German helmets … but the next time we saw them, they were wearing British steel pots.” Later, Cpl. D’Andrea shipped out on the HMS Samaria, “…an English troop ship that smelled of mutton,” which transported his unit to Southern France where his unit became part of the 75th Infantry Division. “It wasn’t an invasion when we got there,” he noted. “We went over the side on cargo nets, and you had to move at a certain pace or you would get stepped on.” After landing, the troops traveled inland in freight cars dating from the cavalry days of World War I, known as forty16

Passing through the Straits of Gibraltar, Cpl. D’Andrea witnessed a rare sight, the French battleship Lorraine, which had been seized by the Free French.

and-eights. “That’s because they were built to carry 40 men and eight horses,” he said. “But we traveled with probably 60 men, and no horses.” They arrived in Dijon, France, where they were quartered in a bombed-out convent. Cpl. D’Andrea accidentally cut his hand, and while at a field hospital, his outfit moved on without him. He was assigned to next unit to come along, Headquarters Battery of the 698th field Artillery Battalion. By then, the allies had effectively swept the German Luftwaffe (air force) from the skies in that area, so Cpl. D’Andrea’s MOS as an anti-aircraft instrument repairman was not needed. As a result, he spent a few months escorting Italian and German prisoners-of-war and repairing ordnance equipment as his unit moved through parts of Europe formerly held by the Nazis.

On to Germany “We were always on the move,” he recalled. During this time, the troops usually slept in 8-man tents, but on a few occasions ended up sleeping on the snowy ground with only a blanket over them and newspapers underneath to keep out the dampness. As a corporal, on one occasion he was assigned to make sure his fellow soldiers took their daily anti-malaria pills. Referring to a quote in Charles Brown MacDonald’s book, A Time for Trumpets, “At any given time during the war, 40 per cent of the Allied forces and enemy forces were lost.” According to Mr. D’Andrea, there were reasons for this: the units were often spread out over large territories, were often separated in the hilly terrain. “If you got detached from your main unit, you got hooked up with the next unit to come along,” he explained. “There was no facility to get separated groups back with their original units.

The troops in Europe also had to use WWI-era maps, some which were written in French. Maps that they had that were written in English were not much more than mere line drawings, lacking sufficient detail. “And some people couldn’t read a map, anyway,” he added. The Germans were retreating, but attacks by enemy V-1 and V-2 missiles and long-range artillery remained a real threat, as did infiltration by German soldiers dressed in American army uniforms. “Night time was scary. We had to determine if men entering our camp were really Americans,” said Mr. D’Andrea. “We had code words, or asked questions like, ‘Who won the World Series?,’ or ‘What teams play for Chicago?’” “We woke up one morning and heard a loud humming noise that got louder and louder,” recalled Mr. Cpl. Joe D’Andrea, on D’Andrea. “After about a leave in Paris during half-hour, we looked up to World War II. the horizon, and estimated that we saw hundreds of B-17s (bombers) and their fighter escorts headed east, to Germany. It made you proud and anxious, at the same time.” Cpl. D’Andrea’s unit overran a concentration camp in Germany where priests, nuns and other religious prisoners were found in starving condition. “We were ordered not to give them any of our food, which was too rich and would kill them,” he remembered. “Later, the quartermaster took care of them.”

Guest of the Swiss, and Home While in Europe, Cpl. D’Andrea had one very pleasant experience. For some reason still unknown, he was in a group of U.S, servicemen selected to be guests of the Swiss government for a 10-day leave. They were wined-anddined, and escorted on tours around Switzerland. “My biggest problem was that we were required to wear our dress uniforms, which in my case had been folded-up in the bottom of my duffle bag since ’43,” said Mr. D’Andrea. The war in Europe ended in May 1945, and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower had declared that, “Personnel could only serve

in a maximum of two theaters of war.” This meant that some Army units in Europe could be sent to fight in the Pacific Theater, where the Allies were preparing for the invasion of the Japanese home islands. Having already served more than two-and-a-half years, Cpl. D’Andrea had accumulated enough service points to be shipped back to the States. After spending some time in Paris awaiting orders, he recrossed the Atlantic by ship, and recalls seeing the Statue of Liberty as he neared New York Harbor. “I felt the same thrill as a new immigrant must have felt,” he said. For his service, he was awarded the EAME Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Once on Staten Island, he was given $2.35 to pay for transportation, and was met by his parents and siblings, who were waiting there for him. Like the millions that came before him and would come after the Japanese surrender, he was home and In April, Joe D’Andrea was ready to resume civilian life. among the WWII veterans honored at Fairfax High School.

Post-war Readjustment

Mr. D’Andrea returned to work at the Sperry Corp. He attended college at night, and married Mary Tracey in 1951. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in 1953, and after buying some stock became friends with his broker, who convinced him to leave Sperry and get into the Stock Market. Mr. D’Andrea attended training programs offered by the New York Stock Exchange, and started a long career as a broker with Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns in New York. Retiring in 1998, he started D’Andrea Business Solutions Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in coaching small businesses. His first wife Mary died in 1997, and in 2000, he married Eleanor Casey. Also that year, Mr. D’Andrea completed the requirements to become a Certified Professional Behavior Analyst (CPBA). Mr. and Mrs. D’Andrea moved from New York to a new home in Heritage Hunt in 2005. Looking forward to his 89th birthday on Nov. 12, 2012, Mr. D’Andrea is active as one of the senior members of American Legion Post 1799 in Haymarket, as well as continuing his consulting business. He is also a member of the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce.

the season of giving According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief charity, “hunger in America exists for over 50 million people. That is 1 in 6 of the U.S. population – including more than 1 in 5 children.” The Virginia rates of food insecurity are 12.4% overall (translating to over 992,000 food insecure people), and 16.4 % child food insecurity (translating to over 300,000 food insecure children). One local charity that is dedicated in the fight against hunger is the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry (HRFP). The HRFP first opened its doors in 2005 as a small food closet at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Because of the growing need of families in the area, and with the support of both St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Mission and the Town of Haymarket, the food closet has grown in size and scope to become the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, and since 2010 has been a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. The HRFP relies solely on local businesses, churches, community groups, and individuals to donate food as they fulfill their mission to “Help Other People Eat.” Currently, the HRFP helps over 400 families weekly who are in need from Prince William, Fauquier, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Page Counties.

Gearing up for the HRFP Holiday Basket distribution For so many of us, the best part of the holidays is time spent with loved ones over a great meal. In an effort to increase the number of families that can partake in this time honored tradition, the HRFP is once again busily preparing Holiday Baskets that will be distributed to families in the area this holiday season. How can you help? To the right is a list of items that the HRFP is specifically asking for to include in their Holiday Baskets. These items can be donated by individuals, or the HRFP is happy to help anyone set up a food drive to collect these items. All donated items can be dropped off at the HRFP, conveniently located in downtown Haymarket at 14740 Washington St – nestled between the Police Station and Haymarket Baptist Church. For additional information about the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, drop off times, and volunteer opportunities, please visit the HRFP website at www. haymarketfoodpantry.org or email them at haymarketfoodpantry@gmail.com. 20

There are two kinds of Deer. Mule Deer resemble Mules and live west of the Mississippi River. Our problem is the WhiteTailed Deer. In 1930 there were 300,000, now there are 29 million. A normal, healthy adult eats 5 to 10 pounds of twigs, leaves, flowers, nuts, etc. per day. That means the average herd of 15 consumes 65 to 150 pounds every day. This results in an annual loss of millions of dollars of crops, landscaping and garden plants. Deer have been called finicky eaters but a hungry deer will eat almost anything. Deer survive by their sense of smell – their noses are eight times bigger than a human, their sense of hearing – their ears flex and rotate, their eyesight has special construction that helps them see in low light, they can run swiftly and hide with camouflage. All of this is to keep them from being eaten. Since the population of predators is fairly low, the deer population is flourishing. At this time of year the Deer are rutting, breeding and eating. Rutting is when the bucks rub the itchy velvet off of their antlers. Any tree with a diameter of less than 6 inches is a rutting target. If a deer damages the bark all the way around a trunk the tree will die because the bark channels the water up through the tree. Protect your trees with fencing or the plastic, spiral tree wrap.

Dave Stinson Sr dstinson@geico.com

It may seem that you can back off on using deer spray because the growing season is winding down but the deer are looking for even more food because they want to fatten up for winter. This is the time to be vigilant with deer spray and fence off favorite food trees like Arborvitaes. I like Liquid Fence because it does not clog sprayers. It smells horrible but once it dries that goes away. Reapply after a heavy rain. A hungry deer is a quick learner. It is always good to change up sprays. Combine spray with an application of Milorganite. This is a mild, granular fertilizer from the Milwaukee sewage treatment plant. You could have a really bizarre looking yard if you decorated your trees with all of the suggestions for homemade deer deterrents: soap, hair, fabric softener, mothballs, predator urine, and tin cans with stones in them so go easy on those. I still do not understand how we can create a rolling laboratory that has successfully landed on Mars and we cannot create a salt lick with birth control that can curb the deer population. So for now, the best thing you can do is discourage them from your yard and hope that your neighbor doesn’t. Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www. As Pivot, Flying V skates at the front of the pack

LADIES LOVE ROLLER DERBY Lots of left turns, hard hits, and expressive uniforms with flamboyant accessories accurately describes the community that three local ladies have joined. Ice Tease, MenaPaws Ataks, and The Flying V are all Haymarket or Gainesville residents that have become members of the NOVA Roller Derby. A flat track roller derby league with four teams, NOVA Roller Derby is run entirely by skaters volunteering their talents and time. Together they work to make the sport fun for all skaters, volunteers and spectators. They encourage their skaters through positivity and promote health, fitness and well-being. This organization skates with pride and purpose but also serves the community through volunteer programs. All three skaters were led to derby through different experiences, but all of them boast about the pleasure that has come with this lifestyle. The combination of practices and bouts builds character and strengthens the relationships among team members. Many women have sought out the sport as a place to get in shape and get healthy. The track is a place where lessons are learned and respect is earned (sometimes through bruises). Influenced by derby, Ice Tease talks of her experience, “Roller derby has helped me to be a better team player, to take criticism and use it to get better, to be more healthy and in shape, and to reach out and be an active part of my community.” The derby community is intimate, but their connections far outreach our northern Virginia comfort zone. “I’ve met some great people, who I know I would not have 26

met otherwise,” MenaPaws Ataks said. “I can go to any major metropolitan city in the US, and internationally (my husband and I recently travelled to San Juan, Puerto Rico to attend the Mainland vs. Puerto Rico bout) and find someone to skate/practice with.” Jerseys and names are just as distinctive as the women who wear them. Each name is absolutely individual not to mention inventive, and there is a worldwide database to make sure of it. Names are usually picked as a personal expression like a nickname, a tribute, a memory, and more. “I wanted something that had my nickname in it so that I would hear it easily on the track,” The Flying V explained. “Everyone calls me V in real life. I’m not sure where the Flying came from, [but] I wanted something cute and clever.” MenaPaws Ataks got her name inspiration from her current life stage. She is a married, mother of three and a grandmother to two little boys. And Ice Tease played on her southern Georgia roots where sweet (iced) tea is the most popular drink. Curious about the uniforms? These brightly colored frocks are representative of the personalities of their teams. The Vineyard Vixens, Ice Tease team are merlot and silver and the Backwoods Rollers, The Flying V’s team don camouflage and pink. Their travel team is the Skate Troopers with brown and gold. Many players personalize their look with embellishments - there are some who even wear full-face paint. roller derby continued on page 30 Haymarket Lifestyle

Flying V (black helmet) takes a hip whip off teammate Pippi Punkerella

“My team, the Beltway Betties, hails from around the beltway hence our symbol is an interstate marker with a Bettie pinup girl sitting on top,” MenaPaws Ataks explained. “Our members are pretty and glamorous however, we can take a hit, give a hit, and we’ll jam right past you in the fast lane!” Loud uniforms and aggressive teammates are the characters they transfer into on the track, but they aren’t a bunch of rebellious, wild women. NOVA members are entrepreneurs, businesswomen, active and military veterans, educators, healthcare professionals, college students, homemakers, IT professionals and more. “We are also ethnically diverse,” MenaPaws Ataks added. “All shapes and sizes (body types) and the skaters range in age from 19 to 57.” These women work hard and want to prove that derby isn’t staged or fake. It’s a real competitive sport with real hits. “When you see us hip check or shoulder check each other on the track, that’s not a choreographed set up for the audience’s entertainment, that’s a girl busting her butt to help out her teammates,” Ice Tease said. After the bouts teams join together like old friends, talking amongst each other including spectators. “One of my favorite traditions in roller derby is that at the end of the bout, all of the fans come up and stand along the edge of the track, and the skaters skate around and give high fives to everyone,” Ice Tease mentioned. “We are appreciating our fans, and they are appreciating us, and I love the sense of community we have together.” “Skate Hard, Give Back” is truly an expression that they live by. Not only do they practice hard and play hard, but they also work hard at making an impact on the community. Each month NOVA Roller Derby selects a local charity to benefit at each bout throughout the month. The charities they support have varying needs, so each skater is encouraged to help raise funds, donate items, spread awareness, create care packages and more. 28

MenaPaws Ataks (in blue) jams for the Beltway Betties

“The roller derby community is something very special. I have been a part of other team sports, but there is nothing else out there quite like this. The roller derby community and NOVA prides itself on community development,” Ice Tease said. Local organizations that have already seen the benefit of partnering with NOVA Roller Derby in 2012 are: DandyWalker Alliance, Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, The Aurora School, Mission Sleep, Homeless Animal Rescue Team, The Neighbors Foundation, Hope for the Warriors, and Shelter House. Ice Tease said, “Whether you are looking for a fun way to get fit, a great way to get involved in your community, or just need a creative outlet for stress relief, it will be one of the best things you do for yourself!”

On November 10, MenaPaws Ataks and the Beltway Betties will take on Ice Tease and the undefeated Vineyard Vixens in the Season Championship. The bout will be held at the Dulles Sportsplex with doors opening at 4:30. In November they will be working with Shelter House, a crisis prevention, safe house that provides support services for homeless families and victims of violence. Please bring new, fullsize toiletries to the bout to help prevent violence and homelessness in our area. NOVA Roller Derby is actively recruiting new skaters and accepting transfers in the area. If you’d like to get involved, but want to wait to skate, there are fun opportunities for referees and volunteers. It’s a great way to learn the rules and get involved in the local derby community. Healthy November is National Diabetes Month

Take Control with a Healthy Lifestyle

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Almost 26 million Americans, both adults and children, battle this chronic, serious disease, which is a leading cause of kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, nontraumatic lower limb amputations and blindness.1 According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), this leading disease nationwide is characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from the body’s inability to produce or use insulin. There are two major types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2. Individuals’ bodies with Type 1 diabetes are unable to produce insulin. This type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 2 diabetes is the most common with millions of American’s bodies either not producing enough insulin or their cells simply ignore the insulin. Insulin is responsible for the body being able to use glucose from the food you eat for energy and to fuel the cells in your body.2 The ADA suggests that a healthy lifestyle made up of a nutritious diet and regular exercise can contribute to preventing diabetes. In honor of National Diabetes Month this November, dedicate yourself to living a healthy and fit lifestyle by incorporating the following three guidelines into your daily life.

Eat Healthy to Fuel a Strong Body Everyone has heard the saying, “You are what you eat,” but the truth of this simple saying is more accurate than most are willing to give credit. The food you put in your mouth fuels your internal systems to function appropriately, your brain to think clearly, and your cardiovascular and muscular systems to perform physical tasks appropriately. Food is such an important factor to your body’s livelihood that it’s important to focus your eating habits on a nutrient-rich, whole foods diet that is packed with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and whole grains. Exercise Regularly to Reduce Risk of Disease A healthy diet and regular exercise routine go hand-in-hand to help reduce your risk of diseases such as diabetes and live an overall healthy lifestyle. The ADA offers the following benefits to being active, as it relates to combating diabetes:2 •

• •

• •

Improves Blood Glucose Management: Activity makes your body more sensitive to the insulin you make and it burns glucose (calories), both of which help to lower blood glucose levels. Lowers Blood Pressure: Activity helps your heart pump stronger and slower. Improves Blood Fats: Exercise provides heart healthy benefits such as raising good cholesterol (HDL), while lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides. Promotes Weight Loss and Maintaining a Healthy Weight Lowers Risk of Common Diseases Such as Heart Attack, Stroke, Some Cancers and Bone Loss

• • •

Increases Energy and Improves Quality of Sleep Reduces Stress, Anxiety and Depression Builds Stronger Bones and Muscles: Weight-bearing activities, such as walking, can make bones stronger. Strength-training activities, such as lifting light weights can make muscles strong.

Maintain a Healthy Weight for Optimal Health and Fitness There isn’t one magic number when it comes to determining a healthy body weight. Everyone’s ideal weight is unique to their specific body structure, muscle mass, water retention and overall health. To determine what your specific healthy weight range should be, consult your health care provider or a licensed nutritionist/dietitian. After you work with a professional to determine your healthy weight range, these providers can help you establish and adjust your weight loss or management goals to align with achieving overall health and fitness. Before you begin any weight loss or exercise program, you should always seek the advice of an appropriate professional, which could range from your health care provider, licensed nutritionist, a certified personal trainer, etc., depending on the specifics of your situation.

Through state-of-the-art techniques and science, Fitness Together combines strength training, cardio conditioning and nutritional guidance for a complete health and fitness solution that can help get you started toward making healthy, wellrounded food and exercise choices to support an active lifestyle. Call or come into our local studio today for more information on individual nutrition and exercise plans that can help you make your overall fitness goals and aspirations more attainable.

Haymarket Quick and healthy are rarely used together when describing the same restaurant, but there is a new establishment in Haymarket that is incorporating the concept and sharing it with the community. Haymarket Kabob is an upscale take-out or dinein restaurant that offers their guests deliciously healthy Middle Eastern inspired food. Their menu while small, is full of seasoned, grilled halal meats and fresh vegetables whipped together to create savory guilt free dishes. Haymarket Kabob has cozy leather booth seating, casual bar seating and family style tables all perfect for stopping in to share a meal. Necessary to start the dining experience is an order of the house Hummus, velvety and rich this pairs superbly with small talk and Naan. This specialty made flat bread is made to order, by hand starting with the ingredients, to kneading, to the oven. This bread is handled with care until it’s baked flat with cloud-like bubbles. It’s served hot right to the table, so eat with care. They offer four salads that are plentiful and fresh. A mixture of vibrant vegetables piled high and topped with dressing of your choice. They offer a Garden Salad and a Tomato Salad that are meat free. Their Gyro Salad is quite popular; a mound of leafy greens topped with gyro meat. They also offer a Grilled Chicken Salad. Their Kabobs and Combination Platters both feature grilled meats, rice, naan and a small salad. The meats are seasoned to perfection and placed

Kabob over an open flame grill to bake in the savory flavors and juices. Their Kabobs choices include Lamb, Chicken, BoneIn Chicken, Shrimp, Beef and Kofta. They do offer a vegetarian option with grilled veggies. Or enjoy a Combination with options like Lamb & Chicken; Chicken & Beef; Lamb, Beef & Chicken; and Gyro. Their succulent meats and veggies surround a mountain of rice and crisp salad to make a playful presentation. Order one of their three warm sandwiches accompanied by your choice of rice or salad for a filling meal. Their Gyro is a customer favorite with meat and veggies neatly rolled into their hot naan. The Chicken Sandwich is just as enticing and for veggie lovers try the Cheese, Tomato and Onion Sandwich. For an after meal treat, indulge in locally made baklava, Hershey’s ice cream or a coffee, espresso or cappuccino. Haymarket Kabob is located at 6850 Piedmont Center Plaza behind the USTigers Tae Kwon Do on Route 55. They are open seven days a week: Monday through Saturday 11:00am to 9:30pm and Sunday 12:00pm to 9:30pm. Delivery service is available within a three-mile radius and they offer catering for both large and small events. Remember kids under the age of six can eat for free off of the kids menu, so gather the group and make it a family night. For more information or to place an order please call (703)7532805.

Dark Hollow Imperial Stout The Beer: Dark Hollow blends the miracle of two crafts, brewing and distillation, to create a work greater than the sum of its parts. This imperial stout has been aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels, patiently breathing in and out of the wood, gaining complexity, depth and character. Complex, Robust, Malty, Roasty, Full-bodied. Pours a dark black with a medium brown head. Smell subtle and sweet with a hint of chocolate. Tastes very creamy with sugar and chocolate malts and a hint of bourbon.

The Brewery: Blue Mountain Barrel House was founded in 2011 by the Smack family as a sister brewery to the original Blue Mountain Brewery, in Afton(Nelson County). The original Blue Mountain Brewery was created in 2007 by Taylor and Mandi Smack, Matt Nucci and a group of fearless share holders. Blue Mountain introduced the concept of the rural brewery to our corner of the world and set the standard for great beer in Virginia. As the first production arm of the Blue Mountain family, the Barrel House focuses on the higher-end beers from Blue Mountain that require special processes, special ingredients, and a whole lot of patience. 495 Cooperative Way, Arrington, VA 22922 (434) 263-4002

The Reviews:

This 10% Imperial Stout was aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels for 100 days. This aging allowed for hints of wood, waves of bourbon and a touch of a char to seep into the layered depths of the beer. Being a fiend for stouts, this is the beer for which I was most excite. It did not disappoint. - TheBarleyBlog.com The flavor of fine bourbon wraps itself more around the taste of the imperial stout than through it. Each sip has a tamed (not mellowed out) bourbon feel without it tasting as if it’s just an added flavor or that the tannin brought along the worst of the charred barrel. ThePintGlass.Tumblr.com

Smooth and chocolaty, with a creamy mouthfeel and a delicious after-taste. My wife and I fought over the remains of this bottle (and she doesn’t usually like beer). Wow! - HoppedUp.Tumblr.com
