ROBOTICS EVENTS November 2, 2013 November 16, 2013

Battlefield is hosting two robotics events on Saturdays in November that the community is invited to attend. On November 2, 2013 from 10 am – 3 pm, an FRC competition will be held, featuring robots up to five feet in height. Twenty teams plan to compete, having their robots throw frisbees into targets from a variety of locations on the playing field. The second robotic event is the Haymarket FLL Regional competition, on November 16, 2013 from 8am to 4pm. The competition, called Nature’s Fury, is hosted by Battlefield’s ILITE robotics and sponsored by FLL (First Lego League). Last year over 50 teams competed with hundreds of participants being introduced to robotics competition. Both events will be located in the Battlefield High School gymnasium and admission will be free. BHS’s robot takes a shot at last years robotic event.

The men’s team has been ranked as high as first for the entire state, all classifications combined. The Bobcats, coached by Jeff Michaelis and Mallory Trowbridge, are led by Aaron Hill, Ryan Miller, Justin Wilkens and Haben Zemichael. The women’s team also won the Judges Classic placing five runners in the top ten of the meet. The team is led by Saige Cisler, Becca Howe, Georgia Matthews and Emma Thornberg. The state championships will be held on November 15th with the girls racing at 10:30am and boys at 11:15am at Great Meadow in The Plains. Admission for the event is $10.

OPERATION TURKEY November 1 - 14, 2013

Battlefield’s FBLA chapter is once again sponsoring Operation Turkey. This school-wide canned food drive will run from November 1 through November 14. Operation Turkey, a program of SERVE Inc., provides Thanksgiving Day food baskets to over 1,100 families in our area that are in need. Students are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to their homerooms. Last year over 2,200 food items were collected at Battlefield. This is an annual project sponsored by the Future Business Leaders of America.

selecting the

IDEAL PET

By Captain Dawn Harman, Prince William County Police Department

for your family Think it’s time to add the pitter patter of little paws to your home? At the Prince William County Animal Shelter we’d love to help you find that special pet looking for his or her forever home. Many people consider the addition of a pet to their family with holidays approaching. Pets can be a great addition to any family but make sure to let your head lead your heart when it comes to making a lifelong commitment to a pet. Picking a pet is much about matching its personality and needs to your lifestyle.

A younger dog would be great for an active family.

Cats love to interact with people even though they are independent.

Tags on the cages provide information about each available animal.

Older dogs are excellent companions for experienced and new owners.

8

There are four questions you should ask yourself before selecting a furry family member. First, do you have the time? All pets require a time investment of their owner. It’s not simply about making sure the pet has fresh food and water, although that is non-negotiable when it comes to your pet. Some pets, like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils, may be perceived as relatively low maintenance compared to dogs or cats. Small mammals that are housed in a cage with food and water require clean bedding and disinfection of their habitats (to prevent that ammonia smell), toenail trims and attention - not particularl low maintenance. Birds, although housed in their own cage, can trash an area in no time at all with seed shells, feathers and dander and will require having their wings clipped if you don’t want to risk them taking flight for parts unknown when out of the cage. Cats, although somewhat independent and sometimes aloof, ideal pet continued on page 10 Haymarket Lifestyle

out before you own a new animal is to volunteer as a foster provider. The Prince William County Animal Shelter is always looking for folks who are willing to open their homes and hearts temporarily to a homeless animal that just needs a little boost.

The Animal Shelter has an assortment of dogs available for adoption.

love to interact with people and require daily scooping of their litter box. If you forget, your cat will be sure to let you know with small “presents” to make the point. Dogs generally require the most care, with walks or exercise playtime and their ability to demand attention from even the most exhausted owner. Dogs and cats of course require the obligatory attention patting, nail trims and grooming, depending on the animal’s coat length and thickness. Secondly, can you children or other pets adjust? Most small children are intrigued and excited about new animals. This can sometimes intimidate a new or unfamiliar pet. Natural behaviors of small children, such as sudden running, darting, loud noises or squealing, and placing their face in front of anything they want to see, can sometimes be interpreted as prey behavior or aggressiveness to pets. This can cause an unfortunate reaction from the pet which may force a new owner to re-think ownership of the animal. Before selecting a new 10

pet, consider the age of any child in the home and your ability to make the time to introduce that pet slowly to the child, making sure ground rules, such as no poking the eyes, no pulling the tail and not honing in during feeding time are followed. Particularly with small children, never allow a new pet to be alone with an unsupervised child. Existing pets in the home may have something to say as well. Some dogs and cats are “one-pet” animals. Just because your neighbor may have three cats does not mean your cat would appreciate a friend, and just because dogs are generally pack animals does not mean your dog would appreciate a newcomer trying to become leader of the pack. Hamsters and other small mammals may be very intolerant of another “invader” in their habitat. Unfortunately there is no way to ask your pet ahead of time but slow introduction of a newcomer will allow your pet to give you all the signals you need to determine if it is the right choice for you. One way to figure this

Next, is your lifestyle stable? Does your career cause you to be out-of-town frequently or to move often? These situations are very stressful for pets, even birds and guinea pigs. Leaving your pet alone may bring out the pet’s defensive nature and cause bad behaviors to erupt. Even though you may like the idea of pet companionship consider the pet’s needs as well. Lastly, and probably most importantly, can you afford it? Many pets are relatively inexpensive to acquire. But there are on-going costs to consider when adding a furry friend to your budget. Food, vitamin supplements or medication, grooming costs, vaccinations, new or replacement habitats, litter or bedding, treats, toys, collars, identification tags or microchips, health examinations, spaying or neutering, boarding or pet sitting for vacations, and medical expenses if your pet becomes sick or injured. Initial investments can be between $200-$400, depending on the pet selected, and annual costs can be budgeted at approximately $1,000$2,800. Pets are a great way to enrich your life by providing companionship and giving you a sense of satisfaction by giving them a good home. If you have asked yourself the questions and are ready to take the next step, the Prince William County Animal Shelter is ready to assist. The Animal Shelter is six days a week: Tuesday through Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm to 4:00pm. The adoption fee for a dog or cat is $45, which includes basic vaccinations, micro chipping, and a starter kit. An additional fee may apply if the dog has not been spayed or neutered at the time of adoption. Small mammals and birds are less and dependent on the species. The Shelter is located at 14807 Bristow Road in Manassas and can be reached by calling 703-792-6465 or by emailing at animalshelter@pwcgov.org. Haymarket Lifestyle

MONEY MATTERS:

Smart Money Moves at any Age

As a financial planner, I have the great privilege of helping a wide variety of people make smart decisions about their finances—and over the years of guiding conversations about money, several common themes usually emerge. So, I’d like to share some of these common money issues that are encountered at various ages, as well as the target for retirement savings. In Your 20’s: Start Good Habits One of the most important good habits to learn is setting and maintaining a budget. With the advent of smart phones, apps and mobile banking, it is increasingly easier to monitor spending habits. Commonly used programs like www.mint.com help to aggregate financial account information, and make it easy to see how you spend your money. When you know where you are spending your money, you can clearly see where you may be able to save money and set it aside for future goals. Savings target: 10% of your income. In Your 30’s: Vital Planning Years Often children are now part of the financial picture. So around this time, family protection becomes important, especially in the event of unexpected illness or death. Conversations typically center on insurance protection— business, life, auto, home coverages. It is important to select the correct types of insurance, and in the proper coverage amounts. In addition, basic estate planning documents are needed to protect your family: a Will, General and Medical Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Medical Directive. Savings target: 15% of your income. In Your 40’s: Prudent Management Typically, the investment portfolio has grown to a size that needs to be carefully managed—too much risk can derail retirement plans, so carefully rebalancing the total asset allocation is critical. Often, there are multiple investments accounts scattered from old jobs, inheritances, or old advisors. It is prudent to consolidate these assets, and develop a cohesive investment strategy that matches the family goals. Savings target: 20% of your income. In Your 50’s: Retirement Under Siege At this age, retirement plans are usually pressed by children heading off to college, and perhaps the pressures of caring for aging parents as well. Figuring out how to handle the challenge of college and weddings without disrupting retirement savings is key, as well continuing to monitor the investment risk in the portfolio. Savings target:20% of your income. In Your 60’s: Creating the Retirement Paycheck Now, retirement is quickly coming into sharp focus. At this time, conversations about “The Number” (the amount of money you need to provide for you and your family for the rest of your life) are frequent. Typically, a “retirement paycheck” is built by maximizing social security payouts, collecting pension benefits, or creating a tax efficient withdrawal strategy from investment accounts. Continuing health insurance and exploring long term care insurance are also common concerns. At any age, there are many smart techniques and money tricks to explore, but really a good financial plan is simply about protecting you, your family and your future. So, I encourage you to seek out a financial planner that understands this—and can help build a financial plan for you. And, the peace that comes with a good plan is truly priceless. Sarah J. Yakel is currently a Vice President at The Fauquier Bank. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional, Sarah focuses her time on comprehensive financial planning and investment management for Wealth Management clients. avoid seasonal slip-ups. The summer sun has faded and fall has arrived. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year: football, fall festivals, pumpkins and Halloween! The leaves are starting to turn and the seasons are changing. How about you? Are you settling back into an old routine in life and fitness? I urge you to use this time of year to embrace change and use it to your advantage. Why is it that so many folks around this time of season allow themselves to “fall back” into old bad habits? Why are they so dedicated throughout the spring and summer, yet as soon as the beach gear gets put away and the kids head back to school, many suddenly seem to fall off the fitness wagon as quickly as they got on it? This usually starts when someone misses (let’s be honest, skips) just one or two workouts per week, and then its 3, and then 4, and then the inevitable, they stop exercising altogether. Don’t let this happen to you. Keep your momentum going and fall forward, and not back! Do not allow the change of seasons change what has been working for you. Keep in mind, unlike us, fat NEVER takes a day off. Do whatever it takes to remain consistent with exercise and nutrition, and do not allow your hard work and the results you worked so hard for this summer fade away as fast as that summer-time tan. It does not have to be that way unless you allow it to happen. As a Master Fitness Trainer, and instructor of outdoor boot camps, I’ve had the pleasure of training with a lot of hard-core and motivated folks over the years, and when it gets dark and cold during the winter months, you’ve got to be motivated in order to remain consistent. I’ve inclued 15 tips of ‘very fit people’ that I’ve compiled over the years which they use to help stay motivated and consistent year round. Don’t be the one to fall off the fitness wagon this year, fall forward and not back! momentum continued on page 16 14

1. Look at exercise as a pleasure and privilege, not as a burden or chore. Think positively about the changes regular exercise and proper eating habits will continue to produce for you all year long. 2. Focus on short-term fitness goals with an emphasis on completing daily exercise. 3. Keep a daily log of what you’re actually eating. This includes grabbing a handful of chips, eating the crust of your kid’s sandwich and all your snacking. 4. Enjoy contributing to the health of others by having a partner or friends to exercise with, as well as recruiting others who desire to feel better and have more energy. 5. Enjoy an occasional (once a week) “unhealthy” treat, but never an “unhealthy” week or “unhealthy” vacation. 6. Invest in the right tools—good shoes, fitness equipment, a new book, attend a nutritional seminar and invest in good cold weather gear if you’re training this winter! 7. Stick with eating plans you can maintain indefinitely. Remember that no matter how hard you’re working out, if you’re consuming too many calories, you’ll never see the muscles that lie beneath layers of fatty tissue. 8. Make it your goal to do some form of exercise 6 days per week. I encourage my boot campers to perform intense resistance exercise 4 days per week, and allow 2 days for some form of low-impact exercise, such as martial arts, walking, swimming, yoga, biking, hiking, ultimate frisbee (my personal favorite) etc., and to also be sure to schedule 1 day of complete rest to allow the body sufficient time to fully recover and recharge. Don’t make the mistake so many others do of over-training. 9. Get adequate amounts of sleep, but remember that people who exercise regularly fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. My advice: Shut off the TV and read 20 minutes of something motivational every night before falling asleep. 10. Avoid monotony by taking up new forms of exercising or using things that keep you motivated and inspired. 11. Don’t compare your body to others. Instead, work to be your personal best. 12. If your diet is unbalanced, take daily vitamin and mineral supplements for total health. 13. Move beyond the boundaries of weight loss and into total fitness. Measure success by the way your clothes fit and not a number on a scale. 14. Work to take your exercise to new levels of intensity. 15. Limit alcohol intake to special occasions. (Weekends are not special occasions)

Lady

Fall into White

It all started about four weeks ago when an old customer of mine asked me to refresh her white garden. A white garden may sound somewhat bland and boring but if you could see one in the late afternoon or early evening you would see why they are wonderful. At those times a white garden glows. It is just like someone threw a switch and everything lights up. Her garden is especially challenging because it gets little water, is shady and is right on the edge of a deer woods - but challenging can be fun and interesting. After a tour around a local garden store I had a list with several possibilities. We agreed on a Caryopteris with variegated foliage, a Veronica with white blooms and a variegated Iris. All three of these plants fit the criteria. The Caryopteris is wonderful whether it has a solid green leaf or green and white leaf because it bursts out with loads of blue flowers at the same time the Chrysanthemums are blooming for marvelous contrast. The Veronica is reliable, hardy and the white, deer resistant flowers will be perfect. The Iris will enhance the garden with its variegated, long leaves even when it is not blooming with light purple flowers. Since this white garden has difficult growing conditions we included plants that have green and white foliage but bloom in a color as well as plants that bloom exclusively white. Some gardens are restricted to only white blooms,

but I like the variegated foliage too. It certainly lasts longer than any white flowers. Other plants in this garden are Lambs Ear with soft light green leaves, Yuccas with tall stalks of white flowers and reblooming Immortality Iris.

A shrub with green and white or yellow and white foliage can light up any shady part of a garden. These plants were made for shade. As a general rule, plants with variegated foliage prefer, or do better in, partial shade. (Of course as soon as I say this, a whole list of variegated foliage plants that thrive in full sun pops up in my head. Sigh.) That is another reason it is so important to read the tag on the plant for specific requirements. Be careful about placement with other plants. You can plant one as an accent or plant a group of three or more as a larger statement but stay away from mixing different kinds together. Years ago when we were planting an area by a creek Gary and I got overly excited about plants with green and white leaves. When we stood back we saw Variegated Redtwig Dogwood bushes in front of a Variegated Dogwood Tree in front of a Japanese Variegated Willow. It was a very noisy jumble. Since then the Willow has gotten huge, the Tree drowned and we added some solid Redtwig Dogwoods so it has quieted down considerably.

Have some fun this season and add some light to your garden. Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. History

Recalling our British Heritage By John T. Toler

Part 2: The enduring legacy of the Low family of Vint Hill

Born in Liverpool to John and Elizabeth Green Low, Andrew Morton Low (1839-1934) came to the U.S. as a youngster, settling in Savannah where his father and his uncle, Andrew Low II (1812-1886), had established Low, Taylor & Co., a cotton exporting business. He often accompanied Charles and Lucy Green, his aunt and uncle on his mother’s side, to Greenwich, Va., where they spent their summers at The Lawn (See Haymarket Lifestyle, October 2013).

business was very successful, and in 1860, Andrew was able to buy Vint Hill, a large property west of Greenwich.

Andrew M. Low joined the family business in Savannah, and in 1859 married a Greenwich girl, Elizabeth L. Moxley (1833-1904). Known as “Bessie,” she was the daughter of Arminta Elizabeth Moxley, a long-time Greenwich resident.

Today, most people think of Vint Hill as the site of the U.S. Army post that operated there from 1942 to 1997. But during Andrew’s ownership and later, it was a working farm.

In the years leading up to the Civil War, the family’s cotton exporting

The history of the land goes back to colonial land grants, but it is believed that it was Thomas P. Hooe who first called it “Vint Hill” when he owned it from 1803 until his death in 1822. Vint Hill passed through several other owners before Andrew bought the 729-acre property from Virginia L. Brooks for $11,229.

“When Andrew Low and his wife first moved here, they took up residence in an old ramshackle house that dated back to the days when the

property was first settled,” according to an article in the June 29, 1959 edition of The Antenna, the official weekly newsletter published by the Troop Information Section at Vint Hill Farms Station. “Plans were drawn up for the construction of a two-and-a-half story mansion, and work progressed immediately. When the initial wooden frame had been completed, Mr. Low erected an open hearth, and with materials readily available on the property, he formed and fired all of the bricks needed to complete the structure.” Construction was delayed by the onset of the Civil War. “In an effort to preserve his new home and property from the scourge of war, Low raised the English Union Jack over his property low family continued on page 24

as a sign of neutrality, according to The Antenna article. “The neutrality of this area was honored by both sides. Once the war was over, work on the house was completed, and farming operations resumed.”

A Successful Farming Operation Shortly after the end of the Civil War, the family cotton exporting business was dissolved, and Andrew and Bessie Low were busy farming and raising a family, which eventually grew to eleven children. Even during the difficult days of Reconstruction that followed the Civil War, the rebuilding of Vint Hill continued. Between 1870 and 1871, several new agriculture buildings were built on the farm, and later, housing for farm workers added to the estate. Fauquier County agricultural records for the years 1870 to 1900 reveal that production at Vint Hill was typical for that time period. Wheat production dropped countywide after 1870, and Low’s principal crop during that time was Indian corn. He also cultivated oats, potatoes and winter wheat, and by 1880, he increased the cultivated acreage at Vint Hill from 400 acres to 450 acres. Also between 1870-1880, Low established a large fruit orchard, consisting of 1,000 peach trees and 25 apple trees. Low’s livestock inventory also reflected current trends. The size of sheep herds in the county doubled between 1870 and 1880, but Low did even better. In the late 1860s, he had

just 60 sheep at Vint Hill; by 1880, the herd had grown to 175 sheep. He also added a new herd of 25 cattle.

moved to Nottoway County, Va. Low later remodeled Silvermead for use as a residence for his farm manager.

The growing family called for other changes at Vint Hill. In 1890, eldest son Douglass Moxley Low (18611931) married Frances Marion “Marie” Green (1866-1909). The couple lived at Silvermead, a new house built on two acres near the main house that Douglass had bought from his father for $1 in May 1885. It is believed that the two-story structure was built on the site of the original house at Vint Hill.

During his ownership of Vint Hill, Low was known as a shrewd businessman, and is credited with starting the first Grange in Virginia. His home was often the scene of hospitality and entertainment, and he was remembered as a musician as well. He raised fine horses, and for years was involved in the old English sport of foxhunting.

Apparently “Bessie” Low did not hold her daughter-in-law Marie in very high regard, at least for her abilities as a homemaker. According to a family legend, Bessie insisted that Silvermead be built without a kitchen, because she thought Marie was a terrible cook, and wanted the couple to take their meals in the main house. Perhaps because of continuing conflicts with Bessie, in October 1893 Douglass and Marie sold Silvermead back to Andrew Low for $1,650, and

In 1885, Low sold a one-acre lot on Vint Hill to the trustees of the Center School District (of Fauquier County) as the site for a new public school. The school was built, but when it was no longer used, he re-acquired the property and had the school building removed. Bessie died in 1904, and by 1910, most of the children had left the area. No longer interested in continuing the farming operation, in January 1910 low family continued on page 26

low family continued from page 24

Low sold 600 acres of Vint Hill to a Mr. O. Johnston and his wife, Leila McClellan Johnston, of Coleman, Texas, for $18,900. The Johnstons held on to the property only briefly, selling it in April 1911 to Martin L. Kohler, of Philadelphia, for $32,000. Apparently, Kohler was acting as a purchasing agent for Philadelphia businessman S. Mitchell Harrison (1858-1927). Kohler proceeded to buy additional tracts contiguous to Vint Hill, including the Herbert Carneal property (128.5 acres, previously owned by Andrew Low, for $1,700); and the J. T. Armstrong property (29 acres, for $1,600). By July 28, 1911, Kohler had assembled the properties into a single 782-acre tract, which was granted to Harrison “...in consideration of the sum of one dollar lawful money of the United States of America.”

Andrew Low’s Later Years According to his great-greatgranddaughter, Neal Tyler Smith, of Doswell, Andrew Low moved to Texas, where he had a successful business career. Later, he returned to the area, living quietly with his spinster daughters, Katharine M. Low (18721966) and Jeannette S. Low (18771963) at their home on Jefferson Street in Haymarket.

Andrew Low spent the final years of his life living in Haymarket in a home on Jefferson Street he shared with his daughters Katharine and Jeannette. Courtesy of Marian L. K. Tyler. 26

It is recalled that during the time he lived there, Low electrified the house with a 42-volt Delco generating system located in a shed he built at the rear of the property. There were other changes that brought the family together. In 1909, Marie Low died at their home in Nottoway County, and Douglass returned to live in Haymarket. In 1927, he married Susan Berkeley Alrich (1879-1965), the daughter of Rev. William Alrich (1836-1903) and Mary Tyler Alrich (1841-1920). “Sue-B,” as she was called, lived one house away from Low and his daughters. She was a talented artist who painted many local scenes and renderings of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where her father had been the rector immediately after the Civil War. While living in Haymarket, Low made many new friends, and in his later years, was a patient of longtime Haymarket physician Dr. Wade C. Payne. “Andrew Low was a most punctilious man, who kept records of anything of importance to him for over 75 years, including a diary of his physical condition,” wrote Martha Leitch, of Buckland, in “History of Vint Hill Farms” (1979). “He would contact Dr. Payne before April each year and make an appointment fore a medical

examination on April 21 (his birthday),” according to Mrs. Leitch. “Each year in August he was stricken with an attack of asthma, and would shut himself in his room for the entire month, or until the attack subsided.” Andrew Low died at his home in Haymarket on Nov. 1, 1934 at the age of 95. “Keen of mind and alert to daily happenings in affairs of the world, he was ever the genial guest and the charming host to his circle of friends,” according to Haymarket correspondent Inno McGill in a Manassas newspaper. “Until recently, when death deprived him of two companions, his son Douglass and Statia Meade, Mr. Low covered from two to three miles in daily walks, and credited much of his excellent health to his fondness for exercise.” His survivors included seven of his eleven children. In addition to Katherine and Jeannette Low, they included Josiah Green Low of Baltimore, H. Mayzek Low of Kansas City, Mrs. Marian L. Piercy Dickinson of Fredericksburg, Mrs. Virginia Hardaway of Richmond, and Mrs. Ellen Douglas Luke of Nokesville. Always a loyal British citizen, before he died Low asked that the low family continued on page 28

Carpenter, rector of St. Paul’s, conducted a brief service at the family home in Haymarket. Burial rites were performed at the Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Rev. Carpenter and Rev. J. Royall Cooke, the pastor at Greenwich.

Changes Come to Vint Hill

At a presentation at Vint Hill Farms Station in May 1993, three of Andrew Low’s greatgrandchildren were given copies of a portrait of Low (center background). From left: Mrs. Virginia Piercy Parr, Eugene Luke and his sister, Ellen Scott Luke Swango.

Back on Vint Hill, Mitchell Harrison remodeled the main house and added several farm buildings, including the sturdy barn, a fancy stable near the main house, a carriage house with servants’ quarters above, and several smaller outbuildings. He changed the name to “Vint Hill Farms,” and in 1913 added nearby Buckland Hall to his property holdings. After Mitchell Harrison’s death in 1927, the Vint Hill property passed to his second wife, Margaret Janet Smith Harrison, and his son, John Kearsley

Mitchell Harrison (d. 1953). After Mrs. Harrison died in 1940, J.K.M. Harrison became sole owner of Vint Hill, which he added to the former Armstrong property across present-day Route 215 (now known as Acorn Farm) that he had inherited earlier from his father. J. K. M. Harrison was the last private owner of Vint Hill Farms, which was taken by the U.S. Government in July 1942, and used as a military post and radio transmissions monitoring station during World War II, and beyond. Col. C. F “Rick” Davis, secondto-the-last commander of Vint Hill Farms Station, made a special effort to honor the Low family, and invited descendants of Andrew and Bessie Low to special gatherings that took place before, during and after the post’s 50th Anniversary in 1992. Vint Hill Farms Station closed in 1997, and the property is now undergoing commercial and residential development by the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority.

Cookies & Camp-Outs Archery has quickly become one of the girls favorite activities. Here they are practicing in the Potomac Woods.

Haymarket Girl Scouts Over one hundred years ago a dynamic woman pulled together seventeen girls in Savannah, Georgia for the very first Girl Scout meeting. Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low was a progressive woman with a vision to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual development of all girls. Low worked to remove girls from isolated environments and revive their spirit through community service and nature. Daisy got the girls active by hiking, playing basketball, camping trips and more. Girl Scout’s has since become one of the strongest girl empowerment organizations within the country with over 3.2 million girls and women participating.

as individually to earn badges, which teach them self-confidence, partnership, leadership and community need.

Both Haymarket and Gainesville have girls and women working to better themselves and the community by joining the Piedmont Association Service Unit. Laura Morgan, Carrie Harris, Stephanie Bell and Susan Lee, lead Troop 6846 that is composed of seventeen girls. A joint troop of Juniors (4th-5th graders) and Cadettes (middle school age), the girls work on projects together as well

Carrie Harris, “The girls can pursue their own [service] interests and still be recognized within Girl Scouts.”

“It’s easier to go do community service, because the leaders let you know where people need help so you can help them,” Cassidy Lee explained. “And that’s really cool.” Their service projects in the community vary greatly, which mostly depend on the interest of the girls. Some girls have volunteered for the Red Cross at blood drives, others have walked animals that are awaiting adoption or wrote holiday cards to send to our troops.

Bull Run Wounded Warrior Retreat located off of Waterfall Road received assistance from the troop. “We went over for a workday,” one scout recalled. “Some of us gardened and some of us cleaned inside.”

Together the girls have worked diligently on projects that are designed to enrich the community or complement the Girl Scout program. “There are service pins you can earn, especially when you get to the teen level,” troop leader Laura Morgan explained. “A couple of these girls earned Cadette Community Service or Cadette Service to Girl Scouting pins.” Both pins require each girl to provide twenty hours of service to an organization. The Cadette Community Service bar activities could include stocking shelves at the regional food pantry, shelving books at the library, or visiting children in the hospital. The Service to Girl Scouting bar is earned by volunteering hours specifically to the Girl Scout organization. Eight of the girls staffed Camp Happy Days that invited girls from the community to come and experience the essence of Girl Scouts. “We worked for five days to show other girls the kind of things that we do,” the girls said. girl scouts continued from page 32 Haymarket Lifestyle

They did an “Epic Camping Trip” in order to earn an outdoor cooking badge. All weekend the troop cooked every meal using one of the following methods: box-oven, stick, foil packet and pot cooking.

girl scouts continued from page 30

Their camping trips involve fun activities like archery and tie-dye too. The girls aren’t the only ones enjoying the camaraderie. “We’ve done things that we probably would have never done as adults being Girl Scout Leaders,” Morgan said. “A few years back the girls wanted to do a laser tag party with their cookie money.”

Members of Troop 6846 gather for a meeting. They made hemp bracelets and necklaces.

Morgan and Harris set it up and followed it with a fondue dinner (cheese, meat, and chocolate!) and a slumber party with all seventeen girls. “We wouldn’t have camped as much as we have without the girls,” Morgan reflected. “I got archery certified last year, I would have never done that, but it was for the girls. Next year I want to get kayak certified for them.”

Members selling cookies outside of Starbucks.

Morgan also mentioned that the girls needed to be at least in sixth grade to lead Camp Happy Days. They worked a forty-hour week over the summer. They led the programs and shared with the campers why they joined Girl Scouts. “I’ve met a lot of new friends,” Abby Morgan said. “And it’s really fun to have people that you know when you do group stuff.” During that week the girls made necklaces, maps, painted pictures and even tie-dyed. “You get to do a whole lot of new things that you wouldn’t normally do,” another member said when asked why she liked Girl Scouts. The troops service even extends overseas. In addition to sending holiday cards they girls have created their own Gift of Caring project. As they sell 32

cookies, they offer their customers the opportunity to purchase additional boxes for troops serving overseas. At the end of the sale, the boxes are shipped using part of the profits from the cookie sales. “We send boxes of cookies over to the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Kendall Miller said. “We’ve been sending them since 2008 and they’ve even started scout troops over there!” Morgan totaled the number of boxes sent and it was an astonishing 2,600 boxes since starting the project. Besides service this troop’s favorite activity by far is camping. They utilize the proximity and beauty of Potomac Woods in Lucketts, Virginia. “Each troop is different,” Morgan remarked. “We are really into camping and even archery.”

The girls make this troop unique with their blend from many schools in Haymarket and the nearby area including Samuel L. Gravely Elementary School, Bull Run Middle School, Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School, Highland School and Wakefield School. In addition all three of Morgan’s girls are members of the troop along with a few other sister pairs. The differences in school and age have made a lively and nice group of girls that truly care about one another and have developed a heart for scouting. “We have just been so lucky,” Harris mentioned. “The girls get along - they enjoy being with each other.” Daisy would certainly be proud of this troop and their commitment to improving the community and building strong relationships with each other. The Piedmont Association offers troops for girls in Gainesville and Haymarket. Fauquier Health Therapy Venues at FHRNC Renovated for Patient Comfort If your doctor says that you need physical rehabilitation, your choices just got better. Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Warrenton has just remodeled its therapy department; it’s designed to provide the best possible patient experience. Entering the therapy department, the first thing you will notice is the new open floor plan that provides easier access for patients, more choices for therapy activities and increased interaction between patients and therapists. The expanded space also provides a brighter and more uplifting atmosphere for recovery. The new area also includes a completely functioning kitchen and bathroom, so that patients can have real-world experience with daily home functions, like cooking a meal, loading a dishwasher, or getting in and out of the bathtub. In addition to regular therapy equipment -- walking handrails, weights, dexterity tools -- there are

stairs so that therapists can ensure that patients are ready to navigate their home environment before they are released from therapy. And new audiovisual equipment has been added for enhanced patient education. Several therapists have received expanded education for specific patient populations. For example, Michele Bryant, MOT (Occupational Therapist), and Beth Michael, MS, CCCSLP(Speech Language Pathologist), now have special advanced certification in brain injury therapy for patients with stroke and other brain injuries. Also recently renovated, FHRNC offers an aquatic therapy pool – the only warm, saltwater pool in the area. If you’re recovering from an injury or living with a medical condition that’s slowing you down, aquatic therapy may get you moving again. Aquatic therapy is a low-impact, low-gravity form of physical therapy that uses rehabilitation techniques while in the water.

Exercises are usually done while upright, and participants don’t need to know how to swim. The water depth is shoulder high or lower. The buoyancy of water supports the joints, but it also provides resistance for building muscle. Exercise intensity can be boosted by moving faster in the water or using resistance tools like floats and weights. The benefits of aquatic therapy are many. It may improve muscle tone and strength, endurance, circulation, flexibility, range of motion, balance and quality of life. As a rehabilitation tool, it can be an excellent option for those recovering from joint replacement surgery or mobility issues like those related to stroke. The warm saltwater pool at the Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center has been renovated. 34

e l z z i S t s a o C Subs with East

PENN STATION EAST COAST SUBS A good Philadelphia cheesesteak means a lot to a sub fan. It’s why Penn Station East Coast Subs has worked hard to make it great in their own way - deli style with an east coast touch. It’s not just the cheesesteak that makes them special though, as they offer over a dozen delicious options for you to pick from. Opened in March 2013, the familyowned franchise planted the first Penn Station East Coast Subs in Haymarket because of the familiarity they had with the area. Owner Anna PrendergastVermillion, who used to ride horses in the area competitively and fell in love 36

with Haymarket, wanted to “bring the blossoming community a sub they would come back for.” It’s immediate appeal in the area is apparent. The classics (Cheesesteak, Club and Reuben), the chickens (Teriyaki, Parmesan and Cordon Bleu), the Italians (Pizza, Italian and Sausage) and the lighter options (Artichoke and Vegetarian) are all grilled to order for you. They also offer the Dagwood which is a create-your-own option with your choice of meats, cheeses and toppings. Or you can try your sub “East Coast Style” with your choice of meats, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red

onion, banana peppers, oil & vinegar, salt & pepper and mayo. Sizes include a 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch with the price ranging from $5 to $10 dependent on size. The Kids Meal is a 4-inch sub with small order of fries, a kiddie-cup beverage and a lollipop. There is also a monthly special to entice you to try something new. The most popular menu items are the owner-favorite Cheesesteak (steak with provolone and your choice of sautéed onions, fresh mushrooms, banana peppers, spicy-brown mustard, mayo, pizza sauce), the Italian (smoked ham, hard salami, pepperoni, Haymarket Lifestyle

provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onions, banana peppers and more) and the Grilled Artichoke (artichoke hearts, provolone, oregano, parmesan and mayo). They also offer Cheesebread baked with provolone, parmesan and oregano with your choice of pizza sauce included. The cook doesn’t start grilling anything until you place the order. It may take a little bit longer than some other sub shops, but the grilled taste baked through on sourdough bread makes it worth it. You can top your meal off with freshly cut and cooked fries (again not cooked until you order November 2013

them) and fresh-squeezed lemonade. One cannot forget their in-house Chocolate Chunk cookies either. If you dine-in, you can enjoy a new, clean atmosphere with tunes playing in the background. Penn Station also features catering for your party and business needs. Party Sub Trays are loaded with 16 4-inch cold Deli subs of your choosing, with options for chips, cookies and lemonade and iced tea by the gallon. If the tray isn’t your way to go, they also offer box lunches - individual lunches served with a cold Deli Classic, chips, a Chunk Cookie Bite and a mint for after.

Penn Station is located at 6424 Trading Square in the Haymarket Village Center near Starbucks with ample parking available in the shopping center. The restaurant offers dine-in and carry-out with additional outdoor seating. They can be reached at (571) 261-1010 for call ahead orders which are recommended for those in a hurry or with many children on the go. The hours are Monday through Saturday 11am to 10pm and Sunday 11am to 9pm. They also provide an e-club for specials and offers online at http:// www.penn-station.com.
