Piedmont Press & Graphics created and published the area’s Lifestyle Magazines beginning in 2005. Our publications have grown to three (Warrenton, Haymarket and Broad Run) and about 160 pages each month with a total mailed distribution of over 33,000. We were very pleased with the success in the region, especially for you, our monthly audience. Our goal has always been to deliver the best local stories to create a better community. We love these magazines. We love our printing and sign businesses, too. But all three took too much time and we knew, eventually, we had to let something go. There was no deadline to do this. No financial pressures. Simultaneously, there was interest in acquiring our ‘babies’. Making sure the publications ended up in the hands of local, devoted people was number one on our list of criteria. Fortunately, we ultimately chose to work with Rappahannock Media, a team led by local publishing veterans Dennis Brack and Tom Spargur and an entire team of people from the area including editor Pam Kamphius of Warrenton. Combined with our existing staff, we believe this is a dream team. Rapp Media publishes the Culpeper Times, the Rappahannock News and the prestigious Piedmont Virginian Magazine. Quality journalism will reign with the Lifestyle Magazines. Holly and I will be here at Piedmont Press & Graphics, focusing on our core business of printing, design, signs and mailing services as we have for 29 years. And, yes, we will still be active in the region and with this magazine. Please stay in touch.

re you looking for your next best vacation ever? Ocean cruising is a great way to spend some rest and relaxation time. There are a plethora of options to suit just about any taste including adventure seekers to those wanting some quiet time away.

Why Select A Cruise? Most contemporary cruise ships are like floating resorts – providing restaurants, live Broadway style entertainment, swimming pools, clubs for children, spa services, casinos, night clubs, sleeping accommodations and MUCH more. Whether you want a romantic getaway, a family vacation,
a girlfriend getaway or a mancation for the men, there is a perfect cruise for the occasion. Cruises are great for groups as well. Think of embarking on a cruise for an upcoming celebration you wish to share with others. Family reunions and anniversaries are the perfect reason to set sail. This type of vacation is also ideal for those who wish to travel with people with similar interests. If you have an interest in golf, you can play a round on some world famous courses while cruising to ports around the United Kingdom. Scuba lovers can cruise the Caribbean and dive some of the great sites at each port of call. People love to cruise because it

is so inclusive. You have numerous dining options that are included in your cruise fare – from seated formal dining to casual buffets and burger joints located poolside. Travelers visit several destinations and experience their diverse cultures without unpacking and repacking. Simply sit back, relax and enjoy all the ship has to offer while making your way to each destination. Planning Your Adventure Make sure you consider which season you want to travel. Santorini, located in the Greek Islands, is a very popular cruise ship destination in the Mediterranean.
round. Alaska’s cruise season is May to early September, while the Panama Canal is popular October through April. The Mediterranean is great April to October and Hawaii is a great cruise option all year round. There are even fall cruises to Nova Scotia and Canada. Australia, New Zealand, and Asia are becoming popular cruise ports as well. It is important to note how much you want to spend and if you want to work with a smaller budget, consider departing from a port close to home to save on airfare. Nearby Ports To Consider Locally, the Port of Baltimore offers cruises on Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Lines. Depending on the time of year, both cruise lines offer travel to Bermuda, Bahamas, and Southern Caribbean for a warm beach vacation. Want to travel north instead? No problem. Canadian cruises are available for those wanting to admire beautiful fall foliage. Occasionally, American Cruise Lines sail their small ships from Baltimore as well. Unlike the large ocean cruise ships, American Cruise Lines sails from Baltimore carrying an intimate group of up to 104 passengers. They cruise the Atlantic coast inland passages from
Baltimore to Charleston, South Carolina and on to Jacksonville, Florida. They offer highly personalized and refreshingly relaxing atmosphere. If Baltimore doesn’t offer what you are looking for, try a little farther north. New York and New Jersey ports have Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International departures to a variety of destinations. With so many options close to home, your vacation is just a short drive away. Preparation Is Key Being prepared for your cruise is critical to ensure smooth sailing. Cruise lines require a government-issued photo ID. A passport is the most common identification accepted and is required on most sailings. Go to travel.state.gov for the most current requirements. You will also need to print your edocuments provided by the cruise line once you have completed the online registration. Be sure to label your luggage with name tags. Be sure to pack a small carry-on type back with essentials for your first few hours on board the ship. Ideally, you
should pack your swimsuit, a book to read or a deck of cards along with any medications you may need because the rest of your luggage will be taken to your stateroom and will not be available for several hours after you have boarded. Some ships offer free mobile messenger apps to connect with friends and family while on board, as well as Wi-Fi. Royal Caribbean International offers Voom - the fastest internet at sea. If you are a fan of social media and love to share your experiences, you will be able to do so during your trip. Your cellular carrier may also offer cruise ship data and voice packages. If you really want to relax and disconnect, set your phone in airplane mode. This will also avoid unexpected roaming charges. The cabins typically only have one or two North American standard, 110 volts AC and standard European 220/230 volts AC outlets so you may want to pack a power tap for more flexibility. And don’t forget your charging cords for all your electronics. Where To Go For Information Think of a travel consultant as a tour guide that will lead you to your best vacation ever. When you buy travel using a travel consultant, you get their expertise at no expense to you. When you work with a travel consultant, you develop a personal relationship with someone who wants you to have the best possible vacation. Utilize their travel expertise to streamline your planning process and offer options you may not have considered. Each cruise line has its own style and target audience. Their websites offer great information about their ships, itineraries, and ports of call. Remember, cruises offer a myriad of options for your next vacation. Plan and book your travel plans according to your preferred destination(s) or season of travel. Bon voyage! ❖

or self-proclaimed “city slicker” Margaret Murnane and her husband Jeff Jensen, a Utah native, owning Asher Hill Farm where they raise farm animals and bees, weave rugs from sheep’s wool, all while collecting and refurbishing antique furniture, has been a way for them to combine their passions into one place. Asher Hill Farm, located on Sudley Road in Gainesville, provides the family with the space to pursue all their interests. And they certainly take advantage of it. “Everything in this house has been a project,” says Murnane, as she shows visitors the many rooms of treasures she has collected, including antique, hard-to-find pieces. And it seems as if each one brings her as much delight as the next. She lights up when describing where and when each piece was found and what her plans are for restoring it’s beauty. Twenty-five years ago, she met Jensen, who was an Army Captain with five young children. Murnane had also been in the Army and just recently gotten out when she met her future husband. During the early years of their marriage they lived on the Presidio, a park and former military base on the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula - or “heaven” as Murnane calls it. Fort Belvoir was their first venture in Virginia after Jeff was stationed there and then retired after three tours in the DC area. Choosing to retire in Northern Virginia was a surprise to both of them, as well as the decision to trade in their new home for a 12-acre farm around 10 years ago. Murnane and Jensen’s ‘hobby farming’ throughout the years has included horses, pigs, chickens, guinea hens,

bees, llamas, and sheep but when they bought Asher Hill farm, the bees, llamas, and sheep were what they chose to continue raising. The llamas serve a protective role for the sheep by guarding them from wild animals roaming the area. Always a “farmer at heart,” Jensen’s interest in raising sheep originally stemmed from Murnane’s fascination with fibers and one of his daughter’s talents as a weaver. While researching unique breeds of sheep that are easy to raise on a small farm, Jensen and Murnane met with some shepherds at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in Frederick, Maryland. Sporting a shepherd’s cane so he could really feel and look the part, Jensen decided on the Border Leicester and the Leicester Longwool sheep, which is a breed known for its lustrous, heavy wool, brought back to the United States by colonial Williamsburg around 1990 after it disappeared from the country in the 1980s. The starter flock of one ram and two ewes was actually the first time city girl Murnane had ever seen a sheep up close. Jensen says it has been “entertaining to watch” his wife learn how to handle the animals and the tractors while asking a myriad of questions. Twice a year comes the fun part of shearing the sheep and processing it for wool, which includes washing and drying the wool, then using a mill to spin the wool into yarn to be used for weaving rugs. Murnane and Jensen take great pride in their wool, the beautiful colors and the many different ways rugs can be made out of the silky material. Jensen brags that his wife has, over time, “become an OK farm girl and a good shepherd” while he gets particular joy from “walking our pastures with a shepherd’s cane in hand and our flock in tow, baaing for attention and maybe a special treat.” But this is just part of the adventure that exists at Asher Hill. At the end of April, Margaret retired from a long career with the Army Corp of Engineers, and now “things are going along at farm

speed” she says with a smile. She and Jeff spend their days working on any one of the many creative outlets they are so passionate about at the farm. One of the hobbies they have taken up in the last few years is beekeeping. Surprisingly, the Gainesville area is home to many beehives and beekeepers; Murnane and Jensen simply had to do some knocking on the doors of their neighbors to find out more about it. With the input of neighbors, some research on YouTube, and some beginner training at a local beekeeping club, Asher Hill became home to a hive of bees shipped from Georgia. Fast forward to today and there are now 14 beehives around the farm. The enjoyment of the hobby for this couple comes from “interacting with our colonies, watching them grow, and benefiting from the sweetness of their honey,” they say. But they didn’t stop there. Once they learned more about their existing colonies, Murnane and Jensen created new colonies and even gave some to their family and friends, while also planning to raising some new queens from their own colonies. It’s a rewarding experience for both of them. “The relationship that we have developed with our bees and the satisfaction we get from watching them work and interacting with them has been a blessing, and of course the pleasure we get from sharing our honey with others is satisfying because it gives us many opportunities to talk about our bees, which we love to do,” says Jensen. The passion is the textiles and the bees, says Murnane, but the fun is the wood and metal. When Murnane and Jensen met, Jensen could fit all of his belongings into his Volkswagen van. But that all changed quickly. Murnane always had a eye for restoring furniture, she says, as “it breaks my heart to see things thrown away.” Growing up in a military household, it seemed as if possessions always had to be discarded with each move. So the only way to furnish a home without breaking the bank became taking what others didn’t

want and giving it a makeover and a new home. Through the early years of their marriage, the couple started picking up furniture at local flea markets then refinished them. Murnane says, “I had developed such a wonderful relationship with wood and refinishing, and finding the treasures.” Eventually they had to rent a storage unit to house the pieces in their collection. When they bought the farm, Murnane could finally begin to buy the larger pieces she is so drawn to. At Asher Hill Farm, Jensen has “the space to hone his woodworking skills,” using the bottom of the barn for a workshop while Murnane collects her pieces in the top of the barn and storage sheds. There is one storage area Murnane is particularly fond of, containing a treasure trove of antique wood beds, that she calls ‘The Bed Shed.’ Jensen uses his talents to convert some of the bed pieces into beautiful benches that can be used in a modern home as dining or entryway pieces. His unique ability to blend two
pieces into one is a talent not many have. Murnane says there aren’t many opportunities for small vendors to show their work in a non-stressful situation. So in June, she held her first Barn Sale, inviting high-end furniture vendors with quality antiques and refurbished pieces to be sold. The event was a wonderful success, allowing her to build relationships with others of the same passion while unloading many of the treasured items she and Jeff had worked on throughout the year. The Asher Hill Fall Holiday Barn Sale, the second event, will be held November 11, 12, and 13th from 10 am to 4 pm each day at 4580 Sudley Road in Gainesville. There will be local vendors selling repurposed, shabby, antique and vintage painted treasures as well as local crafts, upholstery fabric and many more unique items. Be sure to visit with the sheep, ask about the bees, and find Murnane and Jensen for a chat. It will be an experience for all to enjoy. ❖

Planting for Winter Interest
Below: Snowdrops are one of the first signs that Spring is on its way.
By Terri Stevens
T
he winter is predicted to be cold, dreary and snowy. But your landscape doesn’t have to be. There are many options for plantings that will provide color and interest throughout the winter months. There are many trees whose bark provides interest in color and texture such as the Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum). This tree sports an exfoliating cinnamon colored bark which is quite attractive. Also, Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘sangu kaku’) has an intensely red bark as the temperature
cools. This particular maple is stunning once snow is on the ground. The white against red contrast offers a vivid explosion of color. The River Birch (Betula nigra), with its multi-stem structure and peeling white/grayish bark, also offers winter interest and its branches are ideal for craft projects. Many shrubs also provide color and interest - some with berries and leaves. Many shrubs that bear fruit also are a food source for wildlife. Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) or Black Chokeberry (Aronia prunifolia) are either
purple or red, respectively and grow 3-6’ and will thrive in wet areas. Their berries are edible and are used in jam, jellies, and pies - if you can harvest them before the birds get to them! The Redosier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) has brilliant stems originating from the ground that are an intense red against the white winter snow. This plant is a show-stopper! Another plant that provides unique winter interest is the Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea anomola subsp. petolaris). This type of hydrangea offers a twisting cinnamon colored bark that grows against a wall, on a lamp post or trellis. Let’s not forget our herbaceous ICHELLE M. HOPKINS friends. Little BluestemM(Schizachyrium scoparium), grows to 3’ and isATTORNEY not littleAT LAW or blue. Little Bluestem is native to our prairies and sports 4 seasons of interest. In the winter little bluestem turns a coppery brown and is a delight against evergreen color. Helleborus, or Lenten rose (Helleborus foetidus) are evergreen perennials and bloom very early in spring with white, burgundy or pinkish blooms. There are many varieties of helleborus which will bloom between January and March depending on the weather. Lastly, Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) are one of the first signs that spring is on the way. These little jewels start popping up even when there is snow on the ground. Plant these little bulbs in the fall for the earliest of spring blooms along with winter aconite (eranthis hyemalis), which bloom yellow late in the winter bringing spring at last. So, don’t despair… your winter doesn’t have to be dark and dreary, with some planning your landscape can have color throughout the year. It’s fun to go to the garden center and pick plants that will provide immediate satisfaction, but to prolong landscape beauty, look beyond the instant gratification and your winter garden will be amazing. ❖

Waterfowl Fall Migration A season of beautiful birds that are important to Ducks Unlimited and the region By Shawn Kooyman
V
irginia provides an important wintering habitat for Atlantic Flyway waterfowl of all types, including divers, dabbling ducks and sea ducks. Virginia’s migratory waterfowl also include swans and geese such as Canada Geese, Snow Geese, and Tundra Swans. Fall migration typically begins in late August or early September and lasts through January or February when some of the early nesting waterfowl migrate back to the nesting grounds in the Northern States and Canada.
What are dabbling ducks? Dabbling ducks primarily feed in shallow water habitat and are noted for their ‘tipping” style of feeding. Dabbling ducks that can be seen in Virginia during the annual fall migration include: Mallards, American Black Duck, Northern Pintails, GreenWinged Teal, and Gadwall.

protection is an important conservation tool along Virginia’s coast. What are sea ducks? Sea ducks are similar to diving ducks in the manner in which they feed and are generally located in the open waters of the bay and ocean. They include, Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, Long-Tailed Duck, and Eiders

Why are conservation efforts needed? Some of the highest priority species for conservation work in Virginia are American black ducks in coastal saltmarshes and wood ducks in riverine environments. In addition to the habitats of the Chesapeake Bay and Back Bay, forested wetlands along the James, York, Chowan, Rappahannock and Potomac rivers are some of the most important areas for waterfowl in the Commonwealth. Water quality issues in the Chesapeake and Back Bay have big impacts on seagrass beds, a critical habitat component for waterfowl as well as for commercial and recreational fisheries. Restoring wetlands along the rivers that feed into these areas and enhancing coastal marshes will improve water quality in the bays. As with all coastal areas in the United States, land
How does Ducks Unlimited provide assistance? Ducks Unlimited works with private landowners that have made commitments to the future by perpetually protecting their properties with conservation easements, and we coordinate with other organizations to increase land protection efforts in key areas of the Commonwealth. A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a property owner and a qualified conservation organization in which the owner voluntarily restricts the type and amount of development that may take place on his or her property. A conservation easement is a way for landowners to protect property that has a conservation or historic value while maintaining ownership and use of the property. Each easement is tailored specifically to the property and the owner’s desired uses, including economic gain or recreation and the right to sell or deed the property to another. DU has worked with private landowners in Virginia to protect more than 5,700 acres via conservation easements. Private landowners are often under financial pressure from taxes and the encroaching sprawl of development. Landowners

Landowners use conservation easements to voluntarily protect property in its natural state while reaping significant tax advantages associated with potential estate, income, and possibly property taxes. T
o experience authentic Indian food in the Haymarket and Gainesville area, Taste of India is the destination. Owners Ashok Kunver and Mausam Shrestha, friends for years, but business partners on and off since 1998, opened the restaurant two years ago. In the beginning, they opened their first restaurant in Connecticut, but then Shrestha moved to Maryland and Kunver pursued an opportunity in Michigan. In 2010, they came back together again to open a place in Staunton. Their great partnership eventually brought them to Gainesville, which was a great opportunity for them to provide this area with the Indian food that was in high demand and was lacking for those living here. Taste of India restaurants are now open in Harrisonburg and Charlottesville also.
Visitors might see Shrestha, a soft spoken man with kind eyes, tending to the buffet or greeting diners inside the establishment that is modern in design and highlighted with Indian accents. He jokes that the restaurant has had an increase in visitors lately because the statue housed in glass in the front of the waiting area is a Pokestop in the popular Pokemon Go app. Ninety-percent of his customers come from a background of Indian descent but the other 10 percent are newcomers to this type of food. “Try it,” is his suggestion to those who have never experienced authentic Indian food. The common perception is that all Indian food is spicy, he says but it may be surprising that instead, Indian food is made with a variety of more than 20 spices including garlic, cumin, bay leaves, and ginger among others. When asked which dish would be best to experience Indian food for the first time, he suggests the Chicken Tikka Masala, which is made with tomato and cream, or the Chicken Curry that uses a range of spices to achieve its unique flavor. Visitors also may be surprised to realize the menu at Taste of India includes many vegan choices, and every meal is gluten free, except the bread. The recipes for the dishes have been passed down from Kunver’s family, mostly from his father. The menu boasts
“fragrant, zesty, and warm Indian spices” prepared fresh each day and blended to create distinct flavored dishes. This practice “is an exacting, centuries old craft,” the owners say. Soups, appetizers (both hot and cold and vegetarian and non-vegetarian) make up the first part of the menu, like Aloo Tikki, which is mashed potato patties dipped in chickpea butter, or the Meat Samosa, crispy patties stuffed with mildly spiced ground lamb. Then there are the Tandoori specials. Originating from mostly the northern part of India, these dishes are cooked in a traditional charcoal fired clay oven called a Tandoor, which “returns juices and flavors of meats and bakes them to perfection.” The Chicken Tandoori comes to your table hot and smoking on a bed of onions, after being marinated overnight in yogurt and fresh spices. Other Tandoori dishes feature fish, lamb, shrimp, a mixed grill, and vegetables. There are 9 chicken specialties to choose from, all served with basmati rice. The menu continues with many specialties of lamb, seafood, rice, vegetarian (many of them vegan), and chef’s specials like the Chicken Madras cooked in a special chili sauce with spices and coconut. As an accompaniment to any dish, visitors can add a selection of Naan bread stuffed with a variety of herbs, cheese, nuts, lamb,
and spices. And to top off all these delicious offerings, sweet or salted Lassis are available to order. The Mango Lassi is a particularly popular one, as lassi is a refreshing yogurt-based drink often served in the summertime in India. Lunch and dinner features an all-you-can-eat buffet of colorful dishes so diners can get a full array of what Taste of India has to offer. Taste of India is located at 14706 Lee Highway in Gainesville. To view the menu and learn more, go to tasteofindianova.com or call 703-743-5151. The restaurant also offers carryout and catering services. ❖

H
iking and backpacking are exciting outdoor activities that without a doubt not only bring us closer to nature, but also hold the promise of adventure and new experiences. Yet the differences between the two are distinct despite many similarities. Hiking means walking mainly on well designated nature trails for the pure pleasure it provides and rarely needs more than a pair of hiking boots, a rain jacket, some water and a snack. Backpacking with the idea of camping overnight involves the study of maps, detailed preparations for a stay in the wilderness, and the ability to carry 25 to 35 pounds on one’s back. The goal of day hikes at Boots ’n Beer is to enjoy getting out in nature with the camaraderie of others, to get a solid workout, and to revel in banter and laughter while rewarding ourselves at the end with a cool draft beer in a neighborhood tavern. Our Boots ‘n Beer backpacking excursions, on the other hand, involve more detailed planning and preparation, venturing farther out into the wilderness, pitching camp and eating. And when returning home, cleaning and restoring the equipment. Backpacking is considerably a more grounding and deeper experience. It tests not only one’s independence and self reliance but also the ability to work together. Whether hiking or backpacking, John Muir said it best: “In every walk with Nature one receives far more than one seeks.” And so it was with our latest Boots ’n Beer three day backpacking trip, which took us deep into the wilderness of West Virginia.

“Hiking and backpacking are exciting outdoor activities that without a doubt not only bring us closer to nature, but also hold the promise of adventure and new experiences.”
Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia Dolly Sods Wilderness is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in West Virginia. It’s an area of high elevation of windswept plains. It is located on the Allegheny Plateau is known for its extensive glacier shaped rock formations, upland bogs and sweeping vistas. With crooked and stunted trees, huckleberry bushes and ferns, its climate and plant life resembles that of Canada. Dolly Sods is like a unique island of wild country surrounded by Appalachian hardwood forests. Once the home to vast forests of massive spruce and hemlock trees, between 1899 and 1924 the entire forest was logged, which makes the area susceptible to wildfires to this day. During World War II this plateau was used for artillery and mortar training, and in 1975 Congress designated close to 18,000 acres as protected wilderness.

Mapping Out The Trails And Hiking The Map With close to 50 miles of a variety of trails of single track, old logging roads and railroad grades, the generally well marked paths meander in quiet solitude through the ever changing landscape and often vanish amongst roots, rocks and bogs. This happened to us two years ago on a Boots ‘n Beer day hike in Dolly Sods. The trail simply disappeared on us, and we had to bushwhack for three hours against diminishing daylight to find our way back to the trailhead. But our hiking group was lucky on this trip. We never went off trail once, due in large part to our hiking buddy, Cooper Wright. He had studied the maps and planned out two hikes with exit routes in case of an emergency.
The group at Dolly Sods.
Cooper’s Detailed Hiking Plan The beginning of our hike, however, threw us a surprise. After a three hour drive from Warrenton to the North Section trailhead, we discovered that the South Section was closed due to wildfire prevention. Plan B came to our rescue, and we would approach Dolly Sods from the South Section trailhead. This put us an hour and a half behind schedule, starting around five in the evening. Our goal was to pitch camp before nightfall which we were able to accomplish. The weather forecast promised us a clear and mild night. Because of the wildfire warnings, we could not light a campfire so we all crawled into our tents in the hope of a good night’s sleep. Despite the Boy Scouts’ motto
“Be Prepared” some of us were not. The temperature dropped unexpectedly into the mid 30’s, and I, for one, was shivering through the night under my summer quilt. Breaking camp early in the morning helped get our cold stiff bones ready for the day’s hike. With 11 miles to go through rolling landscapes, we wanted to strike camp before a bad weather front moved in on us. By three o’clock in the afternoon we established camp and prepared dinner. By six o’clock that evening the temperature turned pleasantly warm and a light rain began to fall. As darkness fell, all of us were in our tents and falling asleep to the steady drums of raindrops coming down faster and heavier. It was actually a most agreeable way to fall into a deep and sound sleep. The witching hour arrived with low rumblings of thunder while rain poured heavily and lightning flared in muted colors through the tent wall. Now fully awake, I had hoped that the rain would have stopped so that the morning would provide us with a clear and crisp start as we hiked home to the trailhead. It was not to be. The storm moved closer and closer and unloaded its full fury on us. My quilt accumulated a fine mist of water droplets, and rain seeped into the bathtub of my tent because I had pitched it in a slight dell. That’s when you learn to balance on a 20-inch wide mattress without moving and just let the soothing lullaby of the falling rain take you back to sleep. At daybreak we gathered in the rain around some tree trunks and enjoyed a first cup of coffee before breaking camp. We were in a cheerful mood, for surprisingly we had all slept well. John Hagarty reminded us that one cannot spend two days in Dolly Sods without having a downpour and walking in wet trails. The joy of backpacking is perhaps best encapsulated in the Boots ’n Beer maxim “There is no bad weather, just bad equipment.” The rain followed us to the end of the trail where we met a group of backpackers hailing from Florida, Illinois and Kentucky. They were ready to start their three day hike in the Dolly Sods Wilderness. As our tents and backpacks were drying out at home, they reminded us of our three day experience of hiking in intermittent rain! But our greatest take-away was that we all felt fortunate and grateful to have enjoyed the great variety of everything Dolly Sods had to offer - clear blue sky, sunshine, unusual rock formations, deep green forests, dark grey hanging clouds, rain and wet trails, starry nights, and the rare camaraderie and friendship of shared adventure and experiences. ❖

If your dog or cat cannot urinate— harmful toxins can build up in the bloodstream and make your dog or cat very ill and even lead to death. Cats and dogs can develop kidney stones just as people do. They are often associated with your pet’s diet. Small stones can

VOMITING AND DIARRHEA Both young and old dogs and cats eat things they are not supposed to ingest. This includes toys that have been feverishly torn apart then eaten, rocks, socks, underwear, corn cobs, needles, owner’s medication, chocolate, etc. All of these things can make your dog or cat very sick. If you know that your pet ingested something inappropriate, please call a veterinarian immediately. What was ingested and how long ago will determine the urgency of the situation.

BREATHING PROBLEMS If your dog or cat appears to have any difficulty breathing they should be evaluated immediately. This is frequently caused by the following: Cats, like people, can be affected by asthma that requires immediate oxygen therapy. Old large breed dogs that are exposed to heat or exertion can exacerbate degenerating laryngeal function and can present as if they are being choked. This condition is called laryngeal paralysis. Puppies and kittens can bite into electrical cords and cause their lungs to fill with fluid. Heart disease can affect dogs and cats. Clinical signs, including rapid shallow breathing, can be seen immediately.
develop in the kidneys and bladder and then try to leave the bladder which can lead to an obstructive flow of urine out of the body. If your cat or dog is straining to urinate—posturing to urinate and nothing comes out—please call a veterinarian immediately. The obstruction needs to be relieved immediately.

any dog and cat owners are awakened in the middle of night or relaxing at home on a Sunday afternoon and find themselves concerned about their pet’s wellbeing. When is it necessary to call the veterinary emergency clinic to have your dog or cat evaluated? There are emergencies in veterinary medicine that require immediate attention. The following are some of the more common urgent cat and dog emergencies you should be aware of as an owner.

TOXINS Many household items used to kill insects and rodents are very toxic to dogs and cats. Vomiting, increased salivation, weakness, diarrhea, and seizures can result from ingesting toxins. Other toxins include: CHOCOLATE Clinical signs depend on the amount and type of chocolate ingested. For many dogs and cats, the most common clinical signs are vomiting and diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, a racing heart rate, muscle spasms or tremors, and occasionally seizures. Chocolate is toxic because it contains methylxanthine theobromine. Theobromine is similar to caffeine and is used medicinally as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dilator, and a smooth- muscle relaxant. Theobromine can be poisonous and results in severe clinical signs, especially if untreated. Approximately one ounce of milk chocolate per pound of body weight is toxic to your pet. Approximately ¼ ounce of dark chocolate per pound of body weight is toxic to your pet. ANTIFREEZE Ingestion of antifreeze is highly toxic to dogs and cats. The chemical in antifreeze, Ethylene Glycol (EG), causes extensive kidney damage almost immediately after consumption. As little as five tablespoons of commercial antifreeze is enough to kill a mediumsized dog that weighs approximately 55 pounds. Immediate treatment is necessary. FOREIGN MATERIAL Unfortunately, dogs and cats like to eat things they are not supposed to ingest. A simple strand of dental floss ingested by a cat can be life threatening. The string can lead to severe intestinal trauma. If you know your pet has eaten anything he/she

TRAUMA Dogs and cats love to run outside, especially after other animals. Unfortunately, this can lead to trauma from an automobile, falling from a high height or altercations with other animals. Trauma after being struck by an automobile can lead to lifethreatening injuries. Dogs and cats don’t pay attention to cars while running in the streets so serious injuries can often occur when they are struck by a car. It is always a good idea to have them evaluated by a veterinarian if this occurs as lung contusions, abdominal trauma and even fractured bones can be well hidden by dogs and cats. Falling from high heights such as trees, stairs, second-story windows, bridges and retaining walls can lead to serious orthopedic and abdominal injuries. ANIMAL FIGHTS Unfortunately, all dogs and cats do not get along. When an altercation occurs serious injuries can follow immediately after the incident or even days later. It is always wise to have your pet evaluated after they get into an altercation with another animal. If the animal is not an additional pet in your own home—be sure to inquire about the other’s rabies status. If your pet is attacked by a wild animal it is always a good idea to have their rabies vaccine booster evaluated. If your dog or cat is not well, it is always advisable to contact your veterinarian. The sooner issues are addressed—the better it is for your beloved pet. piano is a complex and beautiful instrument. Accordingly, there is much more to the piano rebuilding process than simply buying parts and installing them. Going beyond the basics is where the true art of piano restoration comes into play. It is also the reason John Bowen has truly earned the title of Master Piano Tuner and Technician. A maven in the art of premium piano restoration, Bowen has built a respected name for himself in tuning, repairing, and rebuilding these percussion instruments, with a special affinity for the preeminent Steinway & Sons maker. Bowen has maintained a steady stream of business for forty-two years and, with a reputation that precedes him, has fulfilled every entrepreneur’s dream of never having to look for work yet always managing to find it. “I don’t advertise, but somehow everybody has my phone number,” he buoyantly said of his word-of-mouth success. Bowen’s calling can be traced back to his youth and his budding relationship with the man who repaired his mother’s piano, an affiliation that would lead to a parttime job in the man’s shop. Bowen worked for a local piano business in northern Virginia after graduating college in 1974 with a degree in music education. With the help of his wife Dorothy, he started his own business ten years later, and the rest is niche-market history. Reflecting on his seamless career path, he noted, “Some kids like to work on cars. My deal was working on pianos—because I like woodworking, I like working with my hands, and I like music. So it all kind of blended together.” A lifelong northern Virginian, Bowen left Gainesville in 2002 for a more spacious setting in neighboring Haymarket where he found an idyllic ten-acre lot and self-built a pristine house that reflects his natural talents for design and construction. With a wellequipped workshop and all the requisite tools of the trade, he enjoys the dual privileges of doing what he loves from the comfort of his own home. Bowen usually limits himself to two projects at a time as each order is labor-intensive, often requiring up to six months to complete. His latest refurbishment was a 1957 Steinway Concert Grand, commissioned by Osbourn Park High School in Manassas. In addition to six county school systems, Bowen’s work has graced

numerous cathedrals, embassies, hotel chains, concert venues, and private homes across Virginia, Maryland, and the District. Knowing the product and customizing orders to each client’s specific requests and requirements are paramount to Bowen’s business model. “It’s about knowing what a piano needs and replacing pretty much everything in there to Steinway specifications. The only questionable area would be the voicing of the piano (how the piano “speaks”), and that is catered to the customer’s liking. Every piano has its own personality, but the way it speaks can be blended to the customer’s personality. And that takes time to do. It’s all in the way the hammers are lacquered, sanded, and positioned,” Bowen explained. Choosing the right components when rebuilding a piano is essential. It takes a true specialist to understand the nuances and features of each brand and style of parts. This is very important in creating the tone and touch that is desired by the customer. And customer satisfaction is priority for Bowen, whose illustrious clientele has included Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Horowitz, André Previn, Victor Borge, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, and Billy Joel. “I work with very talented musicians, and they want the piano to sound and look very similar to when it was brand new. That is exactly what I do. And I think that’s why people stick with me,” he mused on his singular staying power. While Bowen works on all types of pianos, he explained what makes Steinway a special name and the preferred manufacturer of both classical and contemporary pianists, “All the materials that go into the piano are the best you can buy, which sets Steinway way ahead of the competition. The material for the rim is one-quarter inch maple. The keys are made of sugar pine. Each grain of wood on the soundboard is a highway for the tone. Steinway has a very close grain, with many grains per inch, which gives it a much better sound.” With care, precision, and passion, Bowen embarks on his latest project, restoring a

So, Your Kid Wants to Play in College? By Colby Schreckengost & Stacy DiRocco
L
et’s face it. If your son or daughter is involved in sports, the idea of them playing at the collegiate level has at least crossed your mind. The fact is, of 8 million kids playing high school sports, only 480,000 will go on to play in NCAA athletics. 1 So, if you think college athletics might be in the cards, the first thing to ask yourself is, “Is it their dream, or is it mine?” If it’s your dream, then let them enjoy their participation in sports – the friendships, camaraderie, discipline and teamwork they learn are invaluable lifelong lessons. Their positive experience and your support will mean more to them than stressing over getting recruited or riding the bench for four years. If it’s their dream, how can you help without becoming the dreaded, overbearing helicopter parent? You help by giving them the tools they need and by helping them navigate the complicated world of college athletics.
EXPOSE THEM TO THE RIGHT CAMPS There are ID Camps and there are skills camps. ID camps are often held on weekends during the school year. Only a small number of athletes can participate, and therefore, will be more likely to be on the coach’s radar.
40
{ NOVEMBER 2016 |
Skills camps are more about raising team funds and your athlete could find themselves trying to stand out among hundred of other kids – and the coach might just make a brief showing. The best way to find the ID camps is to regularly visit the school’s athletic website and look for camps. The other is to fill out their recruiting form because they’ll mail ID camp brochures to names they have on their list.
DON’T COUNT ON ANY COACH OR SERVICE TO GET YOUR KID RECRUITED Have your athlete reach out to the colleges they are interested in, sending a personalized email that includes their position, jersey number as well as upcoming tournament schedule and game times, if available. Of all the athletes we have trained, we have never had an athlete get recruited from a recruiting service. It really takes the athlete making a connection with a coach.
DON’T OVERDO THE TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT The fact is, if an athlete spends all their time traveling and playing games, they aren’t training. Training is what helps an athlete stand out. Most teams have a parent on the
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
sidelines handing out player information and identifying which coaches are there. A follow up email to coaches who showed up is the right thing to do and lets the coach know you are indeed interested.
MAKE SURE YOUR ATHLETE MAINTAINS THEIR GRADES There’s nothing worse for a recruit than being turned away because they can’t meet the academic standards of a school. And, kids with stronger grades stand a better chance of a good financial aid package if they manage both sports participation and good academic standing.
DON’T LET EGO DICTATE THE SCHOOL Let’s not forget, your kid is going to college to get an education. Only a fraction of collegiate players go on to play professionally. You can’t count
on that being your kids’ career. So, what that means is Division 1 is not the-be-all-end-all when it comes to collegiate sports. In fact, there are plenty of competitive D2 and D3 schools that could potentially be a better fit academically and socially for your kid. Plus, financially, your kid could end up with a bigger financial aid package there than hoping for a small slice of the limited pie that a D1 school could offer.
BE READY TO PLAY AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL We consistently hear from college coaches that they want athletes, not players. What does this mean? They share that many athletes trying out for their teams have clearly specialized way too early, and are not athletic enough or strong enough to keep up with the competition on the field
or to avoid injury. In other words, many aren’t physically ready to play at the college level. If your child has a strong coach, chances are they are already getting plenty of skills training that is then reinforced in games. But, is their body strong enough to continually meet the demands of several practices a week and 1, 2 or 3 games on the weekend? We see too many injured athletes, particularly with season or career ending knee injuries, simply due to the fact they weren’t strong enough to endure the daily rigors of their sport. We have parents scratching their heads when we mention strength because to them they equate daily practice with strength building. Well, it doesn’t quite work that way. Athletes NEED what I call Foundational Strength. What is Foundational Strength? In the same way you wouldn’t want your house built on a weak foundation, you don’t want your athlete competing on a weak foundation. And the higher level they play, the stronger the foundation that is needed. So how do you go about building this Foundational Strength? Enroll them in a really good science-based and age appropriate strength and conditioning program. This type of program will most likely not be found in your basement or in a big box gym while watching ESPN and doing bicep curls. Athletes need a program that includes nutritional strategies, recovery techniques, Olympic lifts, core strength, lower body single-leg strength and hinge patterns, sprint mechanics, plyometrics, 1st step quickness and multi-directional change of direction.
FIND THE RIGHT COACH They also need a knowledgeable coach - the quality of the coaching is every bit as important in the weight room as it is on the field. Strength and conditioning must be their craft. It’s essential that the coach know the difference between training to improve performance and training for conditioning. Does he or she understand how to implement sport specific ESD (energy system development)? Can they teach your athlete to work smarter and harder to get the maximum benefit for their efforts? Can they see and correct technique? Are they able to focus on individual athletes, or are they overwhelmed because they’re trying to coach 30-40 athletes at one time? Be sure to ask questions before signing them up for a program, and recognize that an athlete will not really benefit from a one- or two-week program. It generally takes at least 10 weeks to show marked improvement. ❖
Colby Schreckengost is owner/director of training at Next Level Fitness & Performance in Haymarket, VA. Colby holds a BS and MS and is a former strength and conditioning coach at the University of Tulsa. He is a certified personal trainer and Sports Nutritionist.

Voice A PERSONAL REFLECTION ON THE BOOK, MY VOICE: A MEMOIR BY ANGIE MARTINEZ By Alonzo Kitchens

fter reading the book My Voice: A Memoir I respect radio personality Angie Martinez even more. She inspired me on a whole new level by teaching the reader to know their individual worth when it comes to their career. She writes about asking for what you want and not taking no for an answer, and working hard until you get where you want to be in your career. Even though Martinez is successful and fairly well-known, she says that she still isn’t where she wants to be. She feels there is more to accomplish by teaching the next generation of radio broadcast journalists what avenues they should take to be great.

Martinez is the true definition of a person who chases her dreams, and I admire her for her drive and tenacity. She went from interning at a radio station in Miami as a teen, to become one of the greatest well-known radio personalities who has ever graced the microphone on syndicated radio. She spent two decades working for NYC Hot 97 FM, where she built her career interviewing the likes of Jay-Z, Beyoncé, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, J. Cole, A Tribe Called Quest, and more. Martinez was also invited to the White House, where she interviewed President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, a definite highlight in her career.

Martinez is now recognized as one of the most influential radio personalities in pop and hip-hop culture. radio station had new management and made changes that just didn’t feel comfortable. So she had to make some hard decisions for the next phase of her career, whether to stay with Hot 97 FM or move to the radio stations newest competition, Power 105.1 FM. Martinez talks about the time she met with the radio executives from Clear Channel (also known as iHeartRadio) and that they had discussed for years to get her to come work for them, but knew she would decline because of her loyalty to Hot 97 FM. Martinez had other plans and at that point in her life she had to weigh out the options by re-evaluating her career and deciding whether to work with a new company that would not just broadcast her show in NYC, but in many other cities. The newest radio station, Power 105.1 FM, created more avenues for Martinez so that her brand has skyrocketed with the power of social media and technology. In some ways I feel that many people can relate to the Martinez’s story - surviving the hardships of life, building relationships, and staying connected with the people who have always showed her support. Hot 97 FM was never going to be Martinez’s final stop, because she has more work to do. After reading this book, Martinez has taught me that sometimes there are going to be opportunities that you just can’t turn
down or pass up, especially where there is going to be growth for your career. Don’t question or secondguess yourself on making the right decision for the next phase in your life. She talks about when she made the final decision to move to Power 105.1, she knew that she would get a lot of support from people in the industry because of the platform she created over the past 20+ years. Throughout this book, Martinez gives great advice to the reader. In the last chapter, she states, “The point is, you never know what you can do until you really put yourself out there and try it. Do it. Whatever it is. Challenge yourself. If you can’t imagine the finish line, the first step is to just show up. And don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Run your own race.” I was so inspired by what she said that it made me really take a look at my life and re-evaluate some things to really figure out my own goals and passions, and to find the true power of my voice. If you’re interested in checking out Angie Martinez’s book “My Voice: A Memoir,” it is located in the Prince William County Library System in the Adult Non-Fiction collection, call number 791.44092 Mar. What I learned from this book is that you have to keep the faith and stay determined because there will be new challenges that will take place along the journey. ❖

I remember my college communications radio broadcasting professor asking the class who they looked up to when it came to radio personalities. Usually when you’re referring to someone in radio you think of the greats like Donnie Simpson, Steve Harvey, and Tom Joyner, but I can remember the first time I heard Martinez, a.k.a. “The Voice of New York” formerly of NYC Hot 97 FM, my whole outlook on radio changed. Martinez is someone who truly embodies hip-hop culture, and she understands the true artistry of what an artist is trying to portray in their music. So when it comes to interviewing celebrities, whether they are musicians, actors, teachers, or even politicians, she has a special way of making people feel comfortable, allowing them to open up to the radio listeners. Martinez is now recognized as one of the most influential radio personalities in pop and hip-hop culture. In her memoir, Martinez opens up about her struggles and how she overcame them, whether it was her finances, stepping away from radio for a while to focus on being a full time mother, going through depression, and even making the decision to move on from being the host of NYC Hot 97 FM. This radio station is where Martinez first got her foot in the door when it came to working at radio, the place where she had been for twenty-plus years. In her book, Martinez describes how the

FIVE WAYS
to stretch your health care budget Did you know open enrollment for 2017 health insurance begins November 1? No matter the size of your budget, these tips can help keep your body and your wallet healthy.
1
FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY FOR A SUBSIDY. Depending on your income and household size, you may be eligible for a subsidy that lowers your premium. To find out if you are eligible for a subsidy in 2017, check out the health care savings chart on Healthcare.gov.
2
UNDERSTAND HOW YOUR PLAN WORKS. “Choosing an insurance plan is a very personal decision,” said Arlene Ferebee, senior director of strategic development with Novant Health. “You need to make sure you are getting the right amount of coverage for your health care needs, at a price that fits your budget.” To find the best plan for you, carefully review the terms so you know what is and what is not covered, what procedures you need to follow to ensure your claims are paid, and which providers and facilities to use to get the most costeffective care.
3
FIND A DOCTOR WHO IS A GOOD FIT FOR YOU. Most insurance plans cover preventative and wellness services, so choosing a primary care provider is an important first step to getting care and staying healthy. Make sure the physician you’re seeing is in-network for your insurance plan to avoid any unsuspected costs, but a good personal fit is important, too. Be open with your physician about your cost concerns and he or she may be able to help you avoid excessive or unnecessary medical costs.
4
{ NOVEMBER 2016 |
SWITCH TO GENERIC DRUGS. If you’re not taking them already, ask your physician if there are generic versions of your medications that might work as well for you. Aside from their lowered price, many grocery, pharmacy and big-box chain stores offer additional discounts for certain generic prescriptions.

USE RETAIL CLINICS AND URGENT CARE CENTERS. Find yourself sick or injured when your doctor’s office is closed? Instead of heading straight to the emergency room, look for a nearby retail clinic or urgent care. They can provide treatment after hours for many nonlife threatening health needs and are cheaper than hospital emergency departments.
