History

Recalling our British Heritage Part 1: The family of Charles Green played a major role in local history By John T. Toler

During the 1800s, immigrants from Western Europe settled in the Haymarket area, bringing with them or starting families that would have a lasting impact on regional history.

Haymarket in the Greenwich area. These immigrants included the Green and Low families, who arrived in the United States in the early 1830s, and were ultimately related by marriage.

Notable among these families were the Heinekens and the Peters, who came from Germany and established homes and estates from Haymarket north to Hickory Grove (See Haymarket Lifestyle, November, 2010.)

Patriarch of the Green family was Charles Green, who was born at HalesOwen, Shropshire, England in 1807, and came to the U.S. in 1833. His principal residence was in Savannah, Ga., but was a frequent visitor to the Greenwich area, since he had a sister who lived there.

Perhaps lesser known but equally significant were families who came from England and settled southwest of

His first job in Savannah was as a clerk, followed soon afterward as a partner in the E. P. Butts cotton exporting business. When that company failed, he went to work for another cotton exporter, Low, Taylor & Co. The senior partner, John Low (1799-1859), was married to Charles’ sister Elizabeth.

1865), Charles (1844-1908), and Andrew Low Green. Sadly, Catherine died of tuberculosis in 1844. Charles and his sons continued to spend their summers in the Greenwich area, and were introduced to members of the old families who lived there. In 1850, Charles married Miss Lucinda “Lucy” Irland Hunton (18281867), the daughter of Thomas Logan Hunton (b. 1802) and Ann Moxley Hunton (1803-1886) of Buckland, and granddaughter of Mrs. Gilbert Irland heritage continued on page 8

In 1837, Charles married Catherine Jane Burroughs (1818-1844) of Savannah, and two years later, the family business changed, becoming Andrew Low & Co., with Andrew Low Sr., his brother John’s son Andrew Morton Low, and Charles Green as the partners. The firm prospered, supplying the spinning mills in England with bales of cotton grown and processed in the South.

Moxley (1775-1858) of Greenwich. On their wedding trip to England in July 1850, Charles wrote the following about his new bride to James Fisher, who was Charles’ agent in Baltimore, as well as Lucy’s uncle: “All you said of Lucy she deserved, and more: truly she is a good girl, and makes me more thankful and more

Wishing to spend more time in Greenwich, in 1855 Charles bought The Lawn (c. 1837) and 22 acres at Greenwich from Mrs. Moxley, his wife’s grandmother, for $3,000. He added to the property, eventually accumulating 470 acres, which he maintained as a working farm. “From The Lawn, many a Virginia cured pork ham, sausages and other farm products made their way to the dinner table in the Savannah house, transported

Built from 1854-1859, major structural problems

And that she is happy, her boundless spirits give me the most pleasing and continuous assurance.” By the time the newlyweds returned to Savannah, work had started on a fine new home on Madison Square, which was completed in 1856 at a cost of $93,000. And with the passing of every year, the connection with Greenwich became stronger. “The comfortable Virginia farm home of her mother – where Lucy returned for the birth of their sons, Gilbert H. (1851-1909), Edward Moon (b. 1853), and Douglass (1855-1911) – became a second home to Charles as well,” wrote Martha L. Summerall in Faithfully Yours, Charles Green (1992). 8

Link to Greenwich grows

Mrs. Moxley had established Greenwich Presbyterian Church in 1802, and at the time Charles Green purchased The Lawn, the congregation was meeting in a log cabin near his home. Born Aminta Elizabeth Douglass, Mrs. Moxley was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Douglass of Charles County, Maryland. She married Gilbert Irland Moxley (1778-1811) in 1802, and lived at “The Grove,” near Greenwich. Widowed in 1811 with four young daughters and a son, Mrs. Moxley is remembered for “…her tireless

Also in 1859, Andrew Morton Low, his business partner in Savannah, purchased nearby Vint Hill, and with his new wife, Elizabeth “Bessie” Moxley Low (1838-1904), began work on the main house there. Back in Savannah, Andrew Low & Co. prospered until the outbreak of the Civil War, and Charles Green became one of the wealthiest men in the city. His home there was the scene of many parties and entertainments as the clouds of war gathered. heritage continued on page 10 Haymarket Lifestyle

Civil War & confinement

Andrew Low & Co. continued to operate until the fall of 1861, when the Union blockaded the port of Savannah. Returning from a business trip to Europe in November 1861, Charles Green, his sister Mrs. Elizabeth Low, and Andrew Low arrived in Canada before entering the U.S. at Detroit. They had been followed by detectives working for the U.S. government, and upon crossing the border, they were arrested and charged with “…making contacts on behalf of the Confederate government to arrange loans for the purchase of arms for the Southern forces,” according to Mrs. Summerall. “They were transported to Fort Warren in the harbor at Boston for confinement.”

8,000 troops to Canada, and threatened Britain’s entry into the war on the side of the South,” according to Mrs. Summerall. “Only a full apology to Great Britain by Pres. Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward resolved the situation and ended this threat from the ‘Trent Affair.’” In a letter to his wife Lucy written in December, 1861, Charles notes that, “The Trent Commissioners (Mason and Slidell)” are in the next room, and we take tea with them, and they with us, on every alternate evening. I wish you could brew for us sometimes!”

and by virtue of his British citizenship, declaring his property’s neutrality. In addition to The Lawn, this protection extended to the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, which if it ever ceased to be used as a place of worship, would revert to English ownership – an argument that prevented it from being taken over and damaged by Union soldiers. Incidentally, fellow Briton Andrew Low used the same strategy to save the main house at Vint Hill. Throughout the war, Charles maintained this appearance of neutrality, which allowed him to work with

The detectives suspected that Elizabeth was carrying secret documents meant for Confederate President Jefferson Davis, but after subjecting her to a personal search, they found nothing, and released her. “It is said that in due course such papers were delivered by the lady to President Davis at the Capitol in Richmond,” wrote Mrs. Summerall. Family tradition holds that the documents were hidden in her hair. While Elizabeth may have avoided imprisonment, Charles and Andrew spent several months at Fort Warren. However, as “political” detainees, rather then prisoners-of-war, their conditions at the prison were reasonably comfortable. Charles immediately began contacting his influential friends in the North and in England, as well as the British Ministry in the U.S. and the U.S. Secretary of State, demanding to know the specific charges against them. Also confined at Fort Warren were James Mason, of Virginia, and John Slidell, of Louisiana, who were at the center of a little-known international affair. Suspected of traveling to Europe to secure support for the Confederacy, they had been forcibly removed by the U.S. Navy from the Trent, a British ship in international waters. “Outraged that the United States had thereby violated the freedom of the high seas, the British government sent 10

Although restored and updated, the original Greenwich Presbyterian Church looks much as it did in the 1860s.

After three months confinement, Charles and Andrew were cleared of the charges due to lack of evidence, and released. The men returned to their families, but the war was far from over.

Actions near Greenwich

As huge battles were fought at Manassas and skirmishes heard nearby, Greenwich was saved from immediate destruction. Much has been written about how Charles protected The Lawn by flying the Union Jack over his house,

antagonists from both sides. But deep down, his sympathies lay with the South. A battle fought on May 30, 1863 between Capt. John S. Mosby’s partisan rangers and Union cavalry following a raid on a federal train at Catlett brought the war to Charles Green’s doorstep. The day before, Mosby and 48 of his men had entered Prince William County from Aldie, with plans to disrupt rail traffic headed down the Orange & heritage continued on page 12 Haymarket Lifestyle

Alexandria rail line at Catlett’s Station. They stopped Briefly at The Lawn, as some of Mosby’s rangers were kinsmen of Lucy Hunton Green.

Capt. Hoskins and three other rangers charged the attackers, hoping to delay them, but more Union cavalry closed in. Capt. Hoskins fell from his horse, mortally wounded. Mosby counterattacked, firing canister at the Union troops, and for a while, drove them off. But enemy reinforcements joined the fight, and knowing he was in a weak position, Mosby ordered his men to disperse into the surrounding woods.

Among Mosby’s officers was Capt. Bradford Smith Hoskins, an Englishman and veteran of the Crimean War who had come to America, and offered his services to Gen. J.E. B. Stuart. No doubt, Charles Green and his fellow countryman Capt. Hoskins had a lot to talk about during the brief visit, where refreshments were served in the drawing room of The Lawn. Heading south from Greenwich, Mosby’s rangers camped near Kettle Run for the night, and were awakened by reveille from a nearby Union camp along the railroad tracks. The rebels crept down to the tracks, where they quietly loosened a rail and attached a wire, which was pulled away as the train approached. With a crash, the locomotive and several cars ended up on the crossties, and Mosby’s men fired on the train with rifles and a small howitzer captured during an earlier battle. Guards on the train retreated after two shots from the howitzer, and the rangers took what they could from the train and set it on fire. But by then, soldiers from the Union camps along the rail line attacked, and Mosby started back up the road toward Greenwich. With Union cavalry approaching, his men took up a defensive position on the lane near Grapewood,

The howitzer was recaptured, along with Capt. Sam Chapman, a key member of Mosby’s command, who was badly wounded. “It was probably at this time that Charles Green came up the road in his cart being pulled by oxen. His horses had previously been commandeered by the Union Army,” according to the National Register of Historic Places nomination prepared for Greenwich Presbyterian Church. “He stopped and picked up Hoskins and proceeded up the lane, where he offered ice water and brandy to Union soldiers. Because they believed Chapman was too severely wounded to be taken prisoner, the Yankees loaded him onto the cart with Capt. Hoskins. The wounded men were taken back to The Lawn, where they were placed under the care of Mrs. Green and her mother, Mrs. Hunton. Chapman recovered from his wounds and later rejoined Mosby. Capt. Hoskins, however, was too seriously wounded, and died. “At the request of Capt. Hoskins’ father, over the captain’s heritage continued on page 14

grave in the Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mr. Green erected a monument surmounted by a cross bearing the inscription, ‘In Hoc Signo Vincos’ (In This Sign You Will Conquer),” according to the NRHP nomination. As the war dragged on, area surrounding The Lawn was used for a time as the headquarters of Gen. George C. Meade during the various times Union troops were on the move in the area. It is also believed that Col. John S. Mosby and possibly Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard were entertained there.

courtesies had been exchanged, Green went forward and said to Howard, ‘General, we surrender the city upon one condition.’ With some scorn, Howard replied, ‘Sir, a conquered city has not the privilege of making terms of surrender.’ Green responded, ‘Nonetheless, I insist on the acceptance of one condition before capitulation, namely that General Sherman and his staff make use of my house for headquarters during their stay in Savannah.’” Later, Charles offered the invitation directly to Sherman, stating, “If you don’t take it, some other general will. I

witnessed elsewhere in the South: impressed by the reception he received, Sherman ordered his commanders to see that there be no looting, intimidation of civilians, or entering private homes without permission.

Post-war years

The end of the Civil War brought little joy to Charles Green’s family. Eldest son Benjamin, who was serving as an officer in the Confederate Army, died of “consumption” on Feb. 14, 1865. Back in Greenwich, the old log church building on the property – which was being used by the Union occupation force – was burned to the ground, either by accident or intentionally. Immediately after the surrender in April 1865, Andrew Low & Co. was dissolved, and Charles briefly joined an insurance and banking firm. By 1868, he was ready to get back into the cotton exporting business, and started Charles Green & Co. in Savannah. Lucy Green died on Dec. 26, 1867, a year after their son Frank Sorrel Green (1866-1880) was born. At her request, she was buried in the Greenwich Church Cemetery, across the road from their country home.

Gen. W. T. Sherman celebrated Christmas 1864 in Charles Green’s home in Savannah, where he had his headquarters. Harper’s Weekly, Jan. 28, 1865.

Sherman in Savannah

One of the more controversial affairs surrounding Charles Green was his invitation to Gen. William T. Sherman to use his home in Savannah as his headquarters after Confederate Gen. William J. Hardee moved his troops from the city in late December 1864, leaving it open for Sherman’s occupation. As soldiers under Union Gen. Oliver O. Howard approached the city early on the morning of Dec. 21, 1864, Mayor Richard Arnold, Charles Green and several aldermen rode out to meet them. They offered to surrender the city. According to Burke Davis in Sherman’s March (1980), “When official 14

much prefer you.” Sherman accepted the offer, and Charles and Lucy and their six children still at home had to find other accommodations, likely in the servants’ quarters behind the house. Charles had his reasons. By offering his home to Sherman, he spared some other citizen of Savannah who might not have been able to handle having their home requisitioned; and by having the top commander staying there, it was unlikely that the fine house would be vandalized “…at the hands of a victorious soldiery.” While many of his neighbors were critical of his overtures, Charles may have saved Savannah from the destruction

Charles married a third time in 1869, to Lucy’s cousin Aminta Fisher (1835-1908), of Baltimore. In Savannah, Aminta was active with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and is remembered as a “…capable, assertive woman whose Scots-Presbyterian was strong in her character, and who brought a fortune into the marriage exceeding Charles’ own,” according to Mrs. Summerall. Although much changed in the South after the Civil War, the family’s cotton exporting business prospered. Aminta still maintained her home in Baltimore, and the couple also spent time at a summer home they built in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The couple made several trips to Europe, where they purchased fine paintings and sculptures. Charles and Aminta had one child, a daughter who they named Aminta, nicknamed “Minnie,” who died in 1878 at age seven. heritage continued on page 16 Haymarket Lifestyle

Back at The Lawn, Lucy’s mother – affectionately known as “Aunt Hunton,” was in charge, and Charles’ youngest son “Little Frank” often stayed there. Until Emancipation, Charles owned slaves at his homes in Savannah and Greenwich, but after the war, hired help was used. In a letter sent from Savannah dated Dec. 19, 1871, Charles described a problem developing at The Lawn to Dr. Moxley, an uncle of both Lucy and Aminta, who lived nearby: “Aunt Hunton is troubled about getting the cows milked, as the female servants object to going out in the snow and bad weather. Now under circumstances like these, I think our man Carter should attend to the cows, and if Aunt Hunton approves, I should be glad if you tell Carter you have heard from me and request him to milk the cows until it is convenient for Mrs. Hunton to send someone from the house to do it.” Charles Green died in August 1881 at the summer home in Maine, and was brought back to Greenwich, where he lies buried near his wives Lucy and Aminta, and many other family members. His passing was noted in the Aug. 17, 1881 edition of the Savannah Morning News:

“With Charles Green’s death, Savannah loses a valuable, influential and honored citizen, and a merchant whose unimpeachable integrity made him respected throughout the commercial world.” Another tribute was made by Gen. Sherman, who called Charles Green, “A gentleman in the highest sense, handsome in person, and with sense which enabled him to guide his course in one of the mightiest tempests of passion which ever occurred on Earth.” The house on Madison Square in Savannah passed to Charles’ son Edward Moon Green, but through a series of bad investments in cotton futures, he lost his entire inheritance by 1891. The home was purchased in 1892 by Judge Peter W. Meldrim, and was later known as the Green-Meldrim House. In 1943, the property was purchased by St. John’s Episcopal Church and remodeled as its parish hall. The Lawn stayed in the family much longer. The Green estate was left to two daughters, Mary Green (b. 1863), wife of Ten Eck De Wit Veeder (b. 1854), who lived with her family at The Lawn; and Anne Hunton Green (1858-1928) who was married to William Whann Mackall (1859-1939), and lived across the road at Boxwood. In 1906, the Green sisters agreed to swap ownership of the two homes, with the Veeders acquiring the Boxwood house and 64 acres, and the Mackalls assuming ownership of The Lawn and 164 acres. The Lawn remained in the Mackall family until 1965, when it was purchased by Edward Saunders, who held on to the property briefly before selling it to Mr. and Mrs. Henry “Bud” Ross, who live there today.

The Lawn has been the home of Mr. and Mrs. ‘Bud’ Ross since 1965. The brick kitchen at the rear of the house was part of the original 1837 structure.

A New Dimension in Screening for Breast Cancer Doctors and scientists agree that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. While digital mammography is still one of the most advanced technologies today, it is only a two-dimensional picture of the breast. A woman’s breast is three-dimensional – composed of different structures, such as blood vessels, milk ducts, fat and ligaments. All of these structures, which are located at different heights within the breast, can overlap and cause confusion when viewed as a two-dimensional or flat image. This confusion of overlapping

tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary call backs. The new addition of 3-D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, at Novant Health Imaging Heathcote may have you asking yourself some questions. What is a 3D mammography breast exam? 3D mammography is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram. During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast detail in a way never before possible. They can scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book. Why is there a need for tomosynthesis breast exams? What are the benefits? With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of your breast tissue in a one flat image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of normal breast tissue looking like an abnormal area. In this way, 3D mammography finds cancers missed with conventional 2D mammography and means there is less

chance your doctor will call you back later for a “second look,” because now they can see breast tissue more clearly. What is the difference between a screening and diagnostic mammogram? A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images which is called a diagnostic mammogram to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated. What should I expect during the 3D mammography exam? 3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. There is no additional compression required, and it only takes a few more seconds longer for each view. Is there more radiation dose? Very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same amount as a traditional mammogram done on film. Who can have a 3D mammography exam? All women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, both screening and diagnostic. To learn more and schedule your appointment, call 703-369-8073. Preseason Training for Athletes: “Where Preparation Meets Opportunity” By Colby Schreckengost BS, MS, CPT

If you ask most successful coaches, they will tell you that if their team comes into the start of the season in great condition, their team’s chances of winning a championship increase tremendously. Seneca, a first-century Roman philosopher, said, “Luck is where the crossroads of opportunity and preparation meet.” The modern definition is: “When you prepare well, you are likely to succeed.” Having coached football at the collegiate level and trained countless athletes as well as developed strength and conditioning programs in all sports, I am convinced now more than ever that preseason training is not only a good thing to do…..it’s critical. And here’s why!!!!

inJury Prevention At Next Level, we train between 1520 teams per year. I knew that we had a tremendous impact on the success of those teams, but how do we quantify that? As an example, I always quote one of our travel soccer team managers whose team has trained with us for the past 3 winters in preparation for the start of their spring season. He recently told me; “you know why we keep coming here to train? Because when the season starts and I look at our opponent’s bench, they always have 3-4 girls on crutches watching and we don’t have any!” Want to make the team? Although it seems glamorous and exciting to train professional and college- bound athletes, I get as much or more personal satisfaction when a parent tells me “after training with you all winter, my 15 year-old finally

made the travel team she’s tried out for 3 years in a row. We don’t take credit for our athlete’s success, but there’s no question that pre-season strength and conditioning drastically increases an athlete’s ability to succeed at any level.

Better conditioning = Better Practices: coaches can get more done! Coaches are always looking for

an edge on the competition. A better conditioned team enables a coach to practice their team with more “game like” intensity and for a longer period of time. We’ve all seen a de-conditioned athlete or team that peters out halfway through practice; the coach gets angry that he’s not getting the focus or time during practice to improve his team.

Building a stronger, more confident Last week I received an email from a parent of a 13 year-old that trained all summer: “Jack is playing outstanding soccer this fall. Confident and strong!! Preseason training has really given him an edge and it is evident on the field (and even at home). He even stepped forward to play keeper when both of the other keepers went down with injuries.” It really fires me up to hear that good training can have such an impact on a young man.

athlete

increased individual Performance = increases team success We don’t just lift weights anymore. Good training now has a broader definition and more than ever we’re focused on making athletes 22

move better, run faster and react more quickly. If we can improve “the machine” that is the athlete’s body, the team will benefit. It makes too much sense, but if every individual gets faster and stronger in preseason, the team as a whole will be better.

keeping athletes healthy. Utilizing foam rolls, lacrosse balls and massage sticks to improve muscle, ligament and tendon tissue and prepare athletes for explosive and rigorous workouts, reduces the chance of muscle strains tremendously.

shouldn’t Ball skills Be enough? I

By understanding an athlete’s restricted mobility, asymmetries and joint instability, corrective exercises can be specifically designed to improve on an athlete’s individual deficiencies when it comes to movement and stability.

like the golf analogy: it doesn’t matter how fancy the clubs and how many hours you spend on the practice tee, technical skills will only take you so far. Until you improve the mechanism (your body), your game will never reach its highest potential. Tiger Woods popularized strength and conditioning for golf. But if you observe professional golf athletes recently, you rarely see the golfer with a big belly and skinny shoulders. They all realize that it takes both great skill work and improved fitness levels to be great. I tell our athletes all the time, “If you want to play at a higher level, you better buy-in to the strength and conditioning component of your athletic development. If you don’t, you’re opponent will and when you meet on the field, they will beat you!” Now that we’ve discussed the reasons why preseason strength and conditioning is important, let’s talk about the 8 critical components of a good program.

imProving the Quality of soft tissue Just in the past 3-5 years, soft

tissue recovery and preparation has been established as one of the keys to

corrective and moBility strategies

dynamic Warm-uP and movement PreParation Most of the latest research

says that proper warm-up (elongating muscle tissue while moving through stretches) is much more effective than static stretching when it comes to preparing the athlete for increased loads and explosive training. Movement prep exercises allow the joints to open up so the body moves with less restriction.

Building core staBility “All movement

starts with a strong, stable core!” At least 10 minutes of every training session should be dedicated to increasing core strength in multiple planes of motion. An athlete’s lack of core strength not only decreases performance due to energy leaks during movement, it can also result in injuries due to added stress on extremities and joints.

Performance enhancement We used

as acceleration and deceleration, linear and lateral speed, change of direction, vertical and horizontal explosiveness, foot speed and overall agility was genetically predetermined - you’re either born with it or not. We now know that if taught correctly; movement skills are no different than ball skills, they can be improved upon through proper instruction, repetitions, and on-going professional coaching.

increasing strength and PoWer

Getting stronger doesn’t always mean laying on your back and bench pressing 300 lbs. In fact, that type of lift should only be done once or twice per week for most athletes. Today’s strength and conditioning programs need to be multifaceted; utilizing a variety of strength and power exercises. The key to developing a good strength program is progressions. Not all athletes are at the same level physically and the programming should reflect it. For instance, a high school athlete in a movement-based sport should be doing explosive-based training or Olympic lifting as a part of their training regimen. Programming for middle school

athletes should be focused primarily on ground-based plyometrics and static bodyweight exercises until mastered. Ten yearolds and under should be training with medicine balls and body weight exercises that are more motor control oriented and fun in nature. All programs should take into consideration both bilateral training (using both legs and arms simultaneously) and unilateral training (using 1 leg, 1 arm, or alternating). And finally, all athletes move in multiple planes of motion and the training should incorporate all of them. Vertical and horizontal pulling and pushing, static and dynamic stability, as well as rotational power should all be utilized when designing the workouts. Today, we have more tools and knowledge than ever before to prepare our athletes for the rigors of sport. But we need to understand progressions in order to develop programming that will improve our athletes and not hurt them.

energy system develoPment (conditioning) Running laps around the

field and wind sprints in linear patterns used to be all we did for conditioning. We now know that improving our athlete’s

energy system, can not only be tailored to their sport in accordance to rest-work ratios, it can be challenging and fun as well. All training sessions should end with some type of “finisher.” Athletes can really benefit from metabolic circuits built around activities such as sled pushes, medicine ball slams and throws, battling ropes, box jumps, slide boards, kettle bell swings, bike intervals, ladders, tire flips and sledge hammer work. Games like running relays, reaction tag, and sprinting football catches keep athlete’s from getting bored by providing an element of fun from back in their playground days.

recovery strategies One component of

preseason training that has been neglected over the years even by professional athletes is recovery. Proper nutrition, quality sleep, days off, massage or extensive stretching on off-days in most cases is the missing piece to an athlete’s winning performance strategy. I am always amazed during our initial athlete evaluations, how poorly our athletes eat and sleep. It’s no surprise their training sessions and overall athletic performances are so inconsistent. Education, family buyin and accountability are imperative to improvement in this area. In closing, it’s critical that we develop a preseason strategy for our athletes or teams. Get out a calendar and start to develop a 10-week preparation plan leading up to the start of the season. Utilize a knowledgeable professional to ensure all of the needs of the athlete are being met. Be prepared and be ready for your opportunity when it arises!

FOR SPRING

FALLING There are parts of winter that I enjoy – sledding, cold crisp mornings, frost covered Evergreens and the architecture of leafless trees. But only for a limited time and then I start yearning for warmth and green and flowers. By February, I am tired of winter and I start looking for the signs that give me hope that there will yet be another spring. While I am encouraged by the growing pile of plant catalogs I go outside looking for more tangible proof and I am never disappointed by my Hellebores. Somewhere in those beautiful evergreen leaves is a flowerbud, maybe even more than one. My collection is growing slowly because they are relatively expensive compared to other perennials their size. The most familiar common perennials can be purchased for $10 or less. Hellebores run from $15 to $30 each and sometimes more. So I figured that if I am going to encourage you to buy and plant Hellebores I should be able to explain why they are pricey, as well as worth it. When Hellebores are grown from seed they take two to three years to get to a saleable blooming size. This slow growth creates expense. Also, to get an exact replica, most Hellebores are grown from tissue cultures. This is in itself an expensive and time consuming process but since growing from seed can produce more surprises than consistency, tissue culture is the method most often used. Finally, as Hellebores become more popular many of the names and forms are being patented.

hellebores provide a bud of hope for changing seasons

This means that a grower has to pay the patent holder/hybridizer royalties and licensing fees. Along with being my “hopeful harbinger of spring” Hellebores are simply great plants. They were originally grown for medicinal purposes, specifically as a poison. The upside of this is that they are truly deer resistant. Mine have never been browsed by deer and they are growing in a deer heavy area. While they are usually thought of as a shade plant they can be exposed to some sun. In fact, intense shade will lessen flower production. They need moisture but will be unhappy in soggy poorly drained situations. The colors range from an almost black purple to red-purple to white, ivory, pink, yellow and freckled combinations. The latest thing in hybridizing is to create new flower shapes: cupped, open and flat, double flowered, upfacing and bell shaped – downward facing.

I could have written this in February or March and urged you to go and find one or two and plant them. The reason I am writing this now, for you to read in October, is that the garden stores are starting to run sales. You can get some great Hellebores at really wonderful prices, plant them now and be all set to go looking for spring in your own garden.

A New Place to play by: Menzie Pittman & Bruce Gair

Musicians and artists alike have a new space to energize, inspire and improve. 4410, an extension of Contemporary Music Center, is an intimate state-of-the-art performance venue that opened in Haymarket. Menzie Pittman, owner, and his CMC team have been influencing the music scene in the community since 2004. Seeing the need for a boutique venue, Pittman worked to build a space that combined premium equipment, professional experiences, learning opportunities and a cool place to just kick it. Through passion, research and contractors, Pittman was able to paste together his vision and open in June. Now musicians of every age gather together to display talents of every style and form of music at 4410.

Pittman made sure to incorporate elements that every musician would desire in a performance space. He knew he needed a sophisticated sound system, professional lighting as well as an atmosphere that reflected a reverence to the great venues that preceded it. In his research he was quite fond of the Bluebird Cafe located in Nashville, Tennessee and Blues Alley in Washington D.C. as well as the Cellar Door, formally in Georgetown. He noted elements of each that were particularly unique but also useful. He looked at specialized institutes for art curriculum but was most impressed with Belmont University, also located in Nashville. photo credit: rayna marie photography 34

“On the walls, you will see a recollection of iconic artist logos that are captured in a tribute to the Cavern Club where the Beatles played during the early 1960s,” Pittman explained.

Opposite the logos, on the other side of the room is pop art mural of a woman’s face. Local high school art students painted both pieces; their work brought life to the venue. Pittman said. “They were personally selected by Hatch Show Print. The stage is magical. An oversized, handcrafted barn door proudly holds the 4410 sign and draws in your attention. Bright colored stage lights, repurposed shed windows, massive speakers and equipment fill the stage. The floor looks as though listeners have traveled far to visit their favorite artists, while the strings of globe lights hanging delicately from the ceiling make listeners feel at home. Above the lights hang white waves of sound clouds that tune the room, enhancing the quality of sound. Refreshments like coffee, water, soft drinks and snacks are served at the back bar made of recycled barn wood.

When asked about the evolution of the design and purpose of 4410, Pittman’s response was, “Above all, I am a music educator, and my mission is to develop and encourage personal talent so that students can learn to perform without fear, and discover their best creativity and most unique voice.”

Pittman has created a venue that is available to artists and aspiring artists of all ages. Friday night hosts Open Mic and attendees as young as elementary school and as old as grandparents can be seen together enjoying the music. Since opening in the summer 4410 has hosted Rock Camp, workshops for bluegrass and banjo, song writing classes and even local artist Terry Roth - he painted live to his favorite music. 4410 was conceived to be an enabler of all the art forms. In the future, the venue will schedule visual arts classes and workshops, clinics on stage presence, classes on performance, recording classes, music clinics, song writing classes, literary classes and jazz. Look for national artists and high profile local artists to conduct workshops as well as perform. Guest artists will be abundant @4410. For more information about 4410 please visit www. contemporarymusiccenter.com or give them a call at (571)261-5000 to find out more upcoming events.

Aliens in the Landscape We aren’t talking about ET, the extra terrestrial or martians wanting to take you back to their planet. Worse! We are talking butterfly bush, honeysuckle, ivy, and some ornamental grasses among other plants stealing our landscape. While these plants might bring beauty and fragrance to your property, they are also actively defeating our native plant species. So, with a little bit of knowledge you can conquer the aliens and improve your landscape. So why native plants? Native plants are the right choice because they are resistant to drought, insects and disease and they require less care. Native plants also improve soil fertility, provide food and shelter for wildlife as well as reduce run-off. There are so many wonderful native plants to choose from. Native plants are readily available from most reputable garden centers or landscape contractors. Often, the best choices are right under your nose. Here are a few of my favorites. To attract hummingbirds or songbirds to your landscape consider Clethra (Clethra alnifolia) especially the variety ‘Ruby Spice’ with its pink bottlebrush blooms and yellow fall foliage it’s a wonderful addition to any shrub border or garden. Also, Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus Sericea), Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticilatta), and Serviceberry (Amelanchier sp.) is another great choice with its rich fall color and desirable winter berries. If you are a butterfly fan, they will make an appearance with Turtlehead (Chelone glabra), Blazing Star

(Liatris spicata), and Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreaum). These native plants provide nectar for butterflies. The monarch population is in severe decline. The reason is somewhat controversial, but the leading theory is climate change. With drought leading to fires in the monarch’s migration pattern, some of the plants monarchs feed on are lost with the fires, thus no food source and decline of the monarch. Resist the urge to plant butterfly bush believing it will attract butterflies. Butterfly bush is an aggressive weed that will grow in pavement, streambeds, and everywhere you don’t want it to show up. It is not a great source of nectar for the butterfly either. Its nectar is not known to be rich in nutrients. Instead plant butterfly weed, joe-pye weed or one of the most important plants specifically the for monarchs, milkweed. It is the only plant where monarchs will lay their eggs. They also feed on it as caterpillars as well as enjoying its nectar. In conclusion, Go Native! Supplement with ornamentals. Native plants will bring you less maintenance, lots of joy and attract wildlife. There are many sources available to find the best native plants for your garden. Of course consider exposure, soil type and mature growth. Check with the local Cooperative Extension office for a current list of plants considered invasive exotics. The list changes as we learn more about these “imports.” A great website for more information is www.dcr.virginia.gov.

A Blend of Cultures Maaza 29 Kitchen & Bar

In April 2013, Gainesville welcomed a multi-cultural restaurant that played with American, Italian and Ethiopian flavors. Using traditional herbs and spices from each region, Maaza 29 Kitchen & Bar creates unique dishes that will be both familiar and exotic. Getting its name from the matriarch of the owners, the Reta family, the restaurant uses fresh ingredients from Nokesville area farms as well as authentic seasonings that would be found in her kitchen. At home Maaza cooked to keep the family together at the dinner table and the restaurant provides the same comfort and closeness for those who visit. Lettuce Wraps are a great handheld starter; they are stuffed with ground Italian sausage, Mediterranean rice, red onion and shredded Mozzarella. Also notable is the Sambusa, a pastry filled with your choice of spiced potato, lentils or beef and deep-fried. A messy favorite with a cultural twist are their Chicken Wings – meaty wings tossed in a spicy Ethiopian dressing. Both the wings and Chicken Tenders are lightly fried and paired with one of their signature dipping sauces: awaze mayo, mitmita yogurt or scotch awaze.

Grab your greens with a Salad Entrée. They offer four large salads piled high with fresh veggies as well as chicken, salmon, and steak. The Smoke Salmon Salad boasts toasted pecans, mixed greens, peas, and asparagus drizzled with Dijon dressing. The Grilled Chicken Salad has mixed greens, pecans, sweet grapes, tomatoes with a red wine vinegar. Their pasta dishes are plentiful with four types of noodles to choose from: capellini, fettuccini, penne and spaghetti. The Bolognese is a favorite with a rich combination of meat, vegetables, herbs and red wine. Their Vegetarian Pasta is filled with bright plants like cremini mushrooms, broccoli, floret spinach, bell peppers and red onions cooked in a homemade tomato sauce. Entrée’s at Maaza 29 will please an assortment of tastes. The Steak A La Bismarck is flavorful: a New York strip topped with diced tomatoes, eggs and melted goat cheese placed over a bed of sautéed spinach. The Awaze Tibs are an Ethiopian specialty with petite tender medallions marinated in awaze sauce and simmered in seasoned butter,

sautéed red onion and green peppers. The Ethiopian Vegetarian Platter is excellent to split with a combination of shiro, mesir, stuffed peppers, gomen, alecha and timatim fit-fit. The Blue Cheeseburger is filling with ground topround blended with green peppers, red onion, garlic and blue cheese. It’s grilled and served on a brioche bun topped with lettuce, sliced tomatoes and red onions and served with their signature fresh cut mitmita fries. Maaza 29 Kitchen & Bar is located at 14630 Lee Highway in Gainesville near Taste of Nora and Volcano Hot Stone Grill. Maaza 29 is open six days a week Tuesday through Thursday 11:30am to 10:00pm, Friday and Saturday 11:30am to 1:30am and Sunday 2:00pm to 9:00pm. They offer take-out service for guests on the go and outdoor seating for guests wanting to enjoy the crisp fall weather. For more information about the restaurant please visit their website at www.maaza29. com, follow them on Facebook for the latest specials or give them a call at (703) 753-2177.
