ince 2008, Jason and Holly Andrzejewski started a tradition of hosting an annual holiday party for their friends and family with a unique twist. The couple asked guests to bring a gift or a donation that would be given to families in need, struggling with a life-threatening illness. Seeing the impact of this simple idea, Holly and Jason were inspired to do more. The next year’s party helped a longtime family friend by providing her financial assistance to ease the burden for her last holidays with her family after a long battle with cancer. “It was then we realized not only do we have a heart for this, but we could have a direct impact on families who are going through the unthinkable. How lucky were we that we have never been directly affected by this?” the Andrzejewskis say. The 2011 party was the inspiration for the couple to take the steps to build upon their idea. With approximately 300 guests that year, they helped raise a large amount of money for Trevor’s Treasures, a local nonprofit organization named after a little boy who battled a rare form of cancer. Trevor’s Treasures assists

families whose children face a similar diagnosis of it’s namesake. Inspired by this wonderful experience, the idea for Give Back 2 Others was born, becoming an official nonprofit organization in August of 2014. Give Back 2 Others is “dedicated to financially assisting families who are facing a lifethreatening illness” by helping with household expenses. These expenses include but aren’t limited to short-term mortgage or rent payments, utility bills, groceries, house cleaning services, and upkeep of lawn and yards. This organization gives 100% of donations to the families to fulfill their “ number 1 goal” of giving back to the community. Each family is given a set amount of financial assistance that the organization has committed to according to the budget. But sometimes families need more. The Helping Hands Fund was created for families who have already received assistance from Give Back 2 Others but find themselves needing further help. The money for this fund is provided by “local realtors, mortgage companies, builders, and individuals who strive to do

We are always looking for others with giving hearts that want to help and make a difference. Other local organizations that benefit from volunteers or donations: Give Back 2 Others is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial support and assistance with household expenses to families facing a life-threatening illness in Prince William county and surrounding communities. Through annual fundraisers and the support of monthly donors and corporate sponsors, the organization helps to ease the burden for families in need. www.giveback2others.com

more” by giving monthly donations of support. And each time the money from this fund is used, the donors are notified so that they can truly witness their helping hand in action. Donors and local community sponsors are always needed for this important mission of helping families in crisis. As the Andrzejewkis say, “We are always looking for others with giving hearts that want to help and make a difference.” Holly and Jason are a perfect example of how a simple idea can spawn into something bigger and provide a positive impact. They explain this notion so well, “we realized so many people have a giving heart, sometimes they just don’t have the platform to know where to give.” Giving back doesn’t have to mean establishing an organization. It can mean volunteering, donating or simply emotionally assisting those in need within our community. Luckily for all who live and work in Haymarket, opportunities exist all around us to help our community. There are some many places that would benefit from volunteer time or donations. Remember, the organizations highlighted are just a few of the many opportunities that are readily available to anyone in the community. Those who help with these organization, and those who founded these nonprofits are the people who are contributing to our town and to our lives, in both big and small ways. ❖

The Haymarket Regional Food Pantry became a nonprofit in 2010 with the mission of providing food to individuals and families in Haymarket and the surrounding communities. The pantry depends on food and financial support from those in the community. Those looking to get involved in this important cause can donate food or money, organize a food drive in their neighborhood, school, or workplace, and can also volunteer at the pantry. www.haymarketfoodpantry.org The Haymarket House, a maternity home, was established by Carried to Full Term, a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe environments for pregnant mothers in crisis. SCHEDULE YOUR 3D MAMMOGRAPHY TODAY 3D mammography is an advanced, clinically proven technology designed for early breast cancer detection. During the 3D mammogram, multiple projections create a 3D image of your breast tissue. Your radiologist can see breast abnormalities in a way never before possible. Fauquier Hospital is the only facility in the region to have the new low-dose technology available for 3D mammography; using the same radiation dose as a 2D mammogram. Research studies show that 3D mammography reduces callbacks for additional imaging by up to 16% and increases cancer detection by up to 40%. Talk to your doctor about whether 3D mammography is right for you.

TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST SEX By Esther Boykin

e are all familiar with the public service announcements encouraging parents to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, internet safety, not texting and driving, and of course safe sex. But have you ever wondered why aren’t parents encouraged to talk about love and dating? I mean we know that when parents share their values about drugs or alcohol they can influence kids to make better choices. So why aren’t we being called to influence our children to make good relationship choices? How to date may not seem like it should rank very high among the many other issues facing teenagers today. The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, eating disorders and body image issues, and even the rise of cyber bullying all seem like greater threats to our children than dating the “wrong guy” (or girl). Yet when you consider that almost three quarters of all 8th graders are dating; and, according to the CDC, by high school more than half of them will experience some form of dating violence (either emotional, physical, or sexual) suddenly healthy relationships becomes a much higher priority on the “keeping our kids safe” checklist. In a world filled with distorted images of love and intimacy- ranging from unrealistic fairy tale romances to sexually explicit, emotionally detached affairs to violent and controlling examples of “love”- our children need guidance now more than ever. And as it turns out, they know it. Millennials (those in the their 20’s now) have fewer sexual partners and report being more focused on finding a

relationship than their counterparts did 25 or 30 years ago. And the generation of kids behind them are trending in the same direction. They may have more liberal views of about sex but their desire is to find more than someone to hook up with. If you’re like many parents, your dating advice may only consist of telling your child to wait and have sex after marriage or at least when they fall in love. But how will they know when it’s love and if it is

the example we set through our behavior is incomplete. Happily married couples may begin a heated discussion as the kids walk in the room but table it until everyone is in bed. Maintaining appropriate boundaries is essential and children do not need to be exposed to every parental disagreement, but if they never see you work through an argument then how do they learn what conflict resolution really looks like?

EARLY RELATIONSHIPS SET THE TONE FOR TEENAGERS’ SENSE OF SELF AND CREATE A BLUEPRINT FOR ADULT INTIMACY. love, will they know how to build a healthy relationship whether or not it includes sex? So many teenagers and young adults today are creating relationships without any concrete ideas about what a “good’ relationship is really like. Many go out into the dating world looking for a relationship that’s either just like their parents or not like their parents relationship. Whether they grow up with parents who do not seem to truly love or like one another, with an absentee parent, or even with parents who are happily committed to each other, children often find themselves creating a list of don’ts without ever considering what they do want. Setting a good example is part of the picture but often as parents

Single parents may begin dating again but exclude their children from the process. Of course you can’t have your teenage son picking out your next boyfriend but you can talk with him about the qualities in a man that would make him a good partner. Regardless of the status of our own love life, your children need to hear from you about what a loving, mutually satisfying relationship should be like. I often say that one of the greatest gifts that my mother (and father) gave me was a positive view of marriage. My parents were divorced when I was in elementary school so it was not by example as much as through honest discussion. We talked about the value of working at a relationship, learning to grow together and supporting one

another’s dreams. They taught me that relationships require work and although they were not successful in working through the issues in their marriage, they reinforced the idea that it is possible and worth the effort to always try. Those are some of the same relationship lessons that my husband and I try to instill in our children. We, like all parents, have a vision of what we want their lives to be and that includes their love lives. You can’t dictate the kind of person your child is going to fall in love with, but you can help them to think about what qualities will matter the most. Is it going to be more important that our daughter’s boyfriend be attractive or that he is kind and respectful? Will our son choose a girl because of the great car she drives or because she can engage him in meaningful conversation? We can’t give the final answer to these questions but as parents we all can have a significant influence on them. The impact of the dating choices they make early on reaches further than just the possibility of teen pregnancy, a controlling boyfriend, or a broken heart. These early relationships set the tone for teenagers’ sense of self and create a blueprint for adult intimacy. So I encourage you to talk with your child this week about love and relationships. Not sure where to start? Why not just start by asking them what they think about love and dating. You might be surprised by what you learn and what they are ready to learn from you. ❖

A Tree That Thinks

By Lynne Galluzzo

The innate qualities of a cherry tree

Cherry Tree (above & below)

Cherry trees are a favorite of the Webworm when they pitch their ugly tents in the trees.

28

{ October 2016 |

T

he path through my perennial garden is crunchy with dry leaves. Not the usual fall leaves, it is too early for those, but the dry leaves from the big cherry tree that presides over the garden. Cherry trees are a bit different from other deciduous trees – they are more finely tuned – it’s almost like they think. Cherry trees all over the region have been dropping their leaves as a survival tactic. Fewer leaves means the tree will need less water to survive. The dry heat we have experienced has caused this. In fact, I have watched this happen most every August/September when it is hot and dry. My River Birches, which inhale quantities of water, are also dropping their leaves for the same reason but not in the same amount as the cherry trees. Another thing cherry trees “decide” to do is die when they are in standing water for more than an hour. Many years ago Gary and I planted a fruit bearing cherry tree in a dip in the yard because we thought it would get more water there. The tree died in a year. We found out that the “nice place” we put it was not good at all. My neighbor has a double row of cherry trees lining his driveway. In the spring this is really beautiful. But one of the trees is in a natural low spot and has already needed to be replaced. I am sure that the first one drowned. Additionally, cherry trees adjust their leaf growth to adapt to their individual light conditions. Trees with low light have more and bigger leaves in order to get as much sunlight as possible. Trees that have a higher light exposure have less leaves and they are thicker in order to maximize their ability to photosynthesize. Versions of cherry trees have been noted all the way back to prehistoric times. Henry VIII, notorious for many things, also ordered the introduction of sweet cherry trees into England after he ate some sweet cherries in Flanders. Some cherry trees are native to North America and others, like the famous trees of the Tidal Basin, were imported. Cherry tree seeds are among the list of seeds that were sent to the Plymouth settlement in 1628. Luther Burbank worked at breeding a cherry tree that would be strong as well as a plentiful fruit producer. He was interested in using the common bird cherry because it is hardy and bears fruit in quantity. The problem is this tree is poisonous. Burbank wanted to create a tree that would not need spraying in order to have a good crop. He bred new trees but I know of no commercial fruit cherry tree that is productive without the use of chemicals. Where apple trees will continue to bear fruit long after an orchard has been abandoned cherry trees will not. To get good cherries to the retail market is not easy. The trees need to be irrigated, sprayed for bugs and viruses, and the fruit carefully harvested. Weather is also a factor in production. Rain in quantity, hail, frost and drought are all problems for the growers.

PROFESSIONAL, PERSONALIZED SERVICE Garden stepping stone with dried up Cherry Tree leaves

Cherry tree leaves are a desirable food source for a variety of bugs. If you see a webby tent with caterpillars in a notch of a cherry tree in the spring it is Tent Caterpillars or maybe Gypsy Moths. In the fall, if you see a fibrous tent on the end of a branch it is Fall Webworm. These tents in the fall are MICHELLE M. OPKINS more of an aesthetic issue than something thatH will harm the ATTORNEY AT LAW tree. The cherry tree has already created and stored all of the energy that it needs to survive the winter. It is only when the Webworm population is huge that something should be done. I read that just by breaking open the tent with a sharp point – pole pruners are great for this – or blasting it open with a stream of water, predators will gain access to the bugs inside and clean them out. If the tent is on a branch of the showcase cherry in the middle of your front yard and you can reach it safely then cut it off and dispose of it. Chemicals are a last resort because the chemicals that kill these caterpillars also kill the beneficial bugs living in the tree. I found the cherry tree that is in the center of my garden at a big box store at least ten years ago. Then it was a slender thing, probably no more than an inch in diameter and not very tall. This was before I had the truck so I stuck it out the sunroof in the Acura, found a classical music station and drove home very pleased with myself. Planting this tree changed my idea from having a perennial border to having a garden with a circular path. It has grown faster and bigger than I ever imagined or planned for. It creates more shade than I would really like and for a while I was climbing in it and whacking off branches every year. This year I looked at it and decided that the garden was going to have to adapt: less roses, more hydrangeas. Next spring I will sit in the bench underneath the tree, reflect on our history together and enjoy it’s abundant blossoms. Who knows? It might be thinking the same thing.❖ Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, live on ten acres in Haymarket where they garden extensively. HIKERS’

OKTOBERFEST By Andreas A. Keller

Cooper Wright hiking in the Shenandoah National Park

S

ome of our best hiking occurs in the fall. With clear skies, bright sun, temperatures comfortable for hiking and the spectacular array of fall color, it’s a great time of the year to hit the many trails found in our own backyard. The Shenandoah National Park and the George Washington National Forest alone offer hundreds of miles of well maintained trails, many of which lead to spectacular vistas over both valleys and mountain ranges with expansive views far into the horizons. With October’s perfect hiking weather who can resist putting on a pair of boots and setting out to breathe in the crisp mountain air, take in the rich color and smell of the fall leaves. The fullness of fall only adds to the joy and energy of walking with fellow hikers as we move briskly along until we find an outcropping of rocks where we can absorb the farreaching vistas that easily fill you with the “Awesome Expansiveness of It All”. Winding our way back to the trailhead and feeling a healthy tiredness, we invariably pick up our steps as we sense our reward for energy well spent - a refreshing beer and the camaraderie of good company!

No other hiking club understands this better than Boots ’n Beer, a drinking club with a hiking problem! BEAUTIFUL OCTOBER HIKES AND REHYDRATION SPOTS The Skyline Drive is a scenic 109 mile road that runs the entire length of the Shenandoah National Park and is particularly popular in fall when the leaves are changing color. Numerous trails can be accessed along the drive including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Two of the many mountaintops along Skyland Drive which open up the vastness of our world as far as the eye can see are Mary’s Rock and Hawksbill Mountain. Mary’s Rock offers an unobstructed 360 degree vista considered to be one of the most beautiful in Northern Virginia. The trailhead for this 4 mile hike is at the Panorama parking place off Skyline Drive. At 4,051 feet Hawksbill is the highest peak in the Park and can be reached in an easy hike of about 2 miles from Hawksbill Gap parking on Skyline Drive at

WATCHING A SUNRISE OR SUNSET SITTING ON THE OUTER EDGE OF MCAFEE KNOB IS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE mile 45.5. A longer hike of over 9 miles and about 2,000 feet elevation gain can be found on the website Hiking Upward. We often end our hikes at the rehydration spot of Griffin Tavern in Flint Hill which carries a wide selection of craft beers on tap and can be easily accessed from either the Front Royal or the Sperryville entrance to the Park. Three beautiful hikes with particularly breathtaking, panoramic views of nearby valleys and mountains are Big Schloss, Tibbet Knob and Buzzard Rock North in the George Washington National Forest. Big Schloss is a 4.4 mile hike and Tibbet Knob is about 3 miles. The trailheads for both hikes are at Wolf Gap Recreation Area. Both those hikes involve some scrambling at the very top and caution is recommended driving up the mountain to the trailheads as the road is narrow, windy and not very well marked, but the views make it well worth it. After the Big Schloss and Tibbet Knob hikes, which are accessed from the Woodstock area of the Shenandoah Valley, we invariably end up in the

Woodstock Brewhouse which receives highest praise from our Boots ’n Beer hikers for its great beers and food. Buzzard Rock North is a short and easy hike with spectacular vistas from the ridge top. http://www.hikingupward. com/GWNF/BuzzardRockNorth/ The perfect libation after this hike can be found in Front Royal at the PaveMint Tap House and Grill. Thirsty hikers can choose from over 30 craft beers on tap and the food menu, sourced from local farms, resembles more a five star restaurant than a beer joint frequented by Appalachian Trail hikers. It definitely has the Boots ’n Beer stamp of approval. There are two more October hikes for the more adventurous hikers. Both offer jaw dropping vistas of nature’s beauty. Old Rag is one of the more popular yet challenging hikes in the Shenandoah National Park with a 9 mile loop and lots of strenuous bouldering and scrambling

at the top. If you need to motivate teens to get out into nature and have fun, Old Rag will not disappoint. After tackling Old Rag a convenient rehydration spot is the Headmaster’s Pub in Sperryville. Outside of our neighborhood in Jefferson National Forest is an October hike that should not be missed — the McAfee Knob in the southern part of Virginia. It is one of the most photographed rocks on the Appalachian Trail! A moderate hike of 4 miles lets you step out onto the outcroppings and all you can hear is “Wow”. The panoramic views of the Catawba Valley, North Mountain, Tinker Cliffs and the Roanoke Valley are only trumped by the overhanging, awe inspiring, iconic McAfee Knob. Watching a sunrise or sunset sitting on the outer edge of McAfee Knob is an unforgettable experience but certainly not recommended for people with vertigo. Join Boots ‘n Beer for our own version of Oktoberfest as we enjoy October’s bright blue weather, hiking in the mountains and celebrating the day with the numerous craft beers found in the excellent local taverns that we’ve sampled especially for you! Find all our recommendations on our website bootsnbeer.com and click on Going Belly-up. ❖

Come Celebrate With The Virginia Outdoors Foundation By John Toler

T

he year 2016 marks the Golden Anniversary of the enactment of the Open-Space Land Act and the creation of the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF), which has its Executive Office on Garrett Street in Warrenton. Over the years, the VOF has had an important, positive impact on our communities and our environment through the preservation of open space. Currently, the VOF has almost 800,000 acres under easement, in 3,945 easements across the state. In Fauquier County alone, the VOF protects 462 properties in open space easements totaling 71,287 acres; 10 properties in Prince William County totaling 820 acres; and 148 properties in Loudoun County totaling 24,766 acres. In addition, the VOF has facilitated the acquisition of public lands in Fauquier County. These include the former Maxwelton property across U.S. 17 from the main part of Sky Meadows State Park (460 acres) purchased through a $2.2 million cash gift by Paul Mellon. Ownership of this property has been transferred to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, which maintains bridle trails on this portion of the park. The 2,486-acre Bull Run Mountain Natural Area Preserve along the Fauquier-Prince William

The duo Hadley Park will perform at the Virginia Outdoor Festival at Banshee Reeks Natural Area.

county line includes 2,350 acres owned by VOF, in addition to 4,500 acres surrounding the preserve under VOF open space easement. The Preserve properties were acquired over the years through more than 50 transactions. In order to share their success with landowners and partners, the VOF has already hosted four 50th anniversary events across the state, at Shenandoah State Park, Montpelier, New River Trails at Foster’s Falls and Coggins Point Farm in Prince George County. The anniversary observance continues on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, with the Virginia Outdoors Festival, taking place at the 725-acre Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, located at 21085 The Woods Road, Leesburg, VA. Banshee Reeks is also protected by a VOF easement. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and includes guided tours, demonstrations, speakers, a farmers market, kids’ fishing derby, silent auction, pumpkin painting and apple bobbing. Food will be served, and live music will be provided by Hadley Park, a popular female duo from Tennessee that has performed for several local area fundraisers. Admission is free for all ages. For directions and more information, visit www.virginiaoutdoorsfestival. com. ❖

When and why did you decide to start your own company? Ever since my grandmother taught me to sew at a young age, I have loved color & fabrics. I kept sewing as a hobby – even while working across retail, corporate and federal government jobs. I did those jobs well, but always felt there could be more to life. I needed an outlet for my creativity. I sewed window treatments and pillows for my home. My friends all thought that I should try design as a business, but they were split between whether I should start right away, or only do so after I’d done their house first! Having my second child in the mid 90’s meant that I needed to be home, and there was no better time to begin planning my own home-based business, which I started in 2001. How does your business serve the Haymarket Gainseville community? I tend to work with busy professionals and homeowners

who desire better living through refreshing home design. I provide many services and products that are only available through trade sources. There’s no need to travel outside the area to get innovative design services and great products. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your business? Through networking I met a professional woman that was having trouble finding time to decorate her house. She had seen one of my presentations to a networking group and shared that she really needed my services. She had no idea where to begin with decorating her home and was tired of living with a furniture collection somewhere between college dorm and “grandma’s attic.” She asked if I could come see her house and if I would be able to transform her house into a home she would love. We discussed how she wanted to use her space as well as how she wanted it to

feel. We evaluated the use of space and what “style” she most identified with and I came up with a plan for her foyer, kitchen, nook, and family room. We created a comfortable living space – with new wall colors, a sculpted rug, contemporary furniture, window treatments, lighting, and accent pieces. She was no longer reluctant to invite friends and clients over to enjoy both a cozy retreat and a comfortable entertainment space. She actually had tears of joy when she shared this with our networking group. That’s a great moment! Have you had an experience with your business that you wish you could redo differently? Describe. I saw a need to rebrand my business a few years ago, in part because as my business grew, my business name became only a subset of the full line of products and services that I now offer. Starting fresh, I would look to “go big” from day one.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? You have to love what you do. Building a business around your passions will get you up each day looking forward to new possibilities. Find likeminded people, especially those comfortable enough to be a mentor. If you are lucky enough to have a mentor - it has to be a good fit. I have been fortunate to have a mentor to show me the ropes – and we serve different communities so there is no competitiveness. It is someone I trust. I consider her advice and make it mine. Just as with a mentor, I have felt it important to network with my business community. Word-ofmouth referrals are essential to my marketing strategy. In the words of the motivational speaker Zig Ziglar, “You can have anything you want if you just help enough other people get what they want.” I want to understand what your business offers-there is someone out there today looking for that service-and I want to help make that connection. When did you join the HGBA? I’m a newer member with the HGBA (only a few months), so I feel like I’m still meeting others in the group. I’m looking forward to meeting them and learning about their businesses. ❖

Do I Need A 3-D Mammogram? What breast tomosynthesis is and what to expect view help with a more accurate diagnosis.

By Tenisha Waldo

W

hether you’ve had a mammogram previously or just turned 40 and want to think through your options for annual screenings, you should consider 3-D mammography, also called digital breast tomosynthesis. The 3-D mammography technology allows a woman’s breast to be imaged from multiple angles. The angled images provide 1-millimeterthin snapshots of the breast tissue that, collectively, provide radiologists a more detailed, three-dimensional view than standard twodimensional mammograms. “It looks like as if there was a book and we’re reading through the pages, so we get to see the breast in a much more detailed view,” said Dr. Sangeeta Srivastava, a radiologist at Virginia Radiology Associates and director of women’s imaging for the Novant Health Breast Center at Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center and Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center. Better angles and a clearer

WHAT TO EXPECT

Most women wouldn’t notice much difference between a 3-D mammogram and a standard digital mammogram. During a 3-D mammogram, an X-ray tube moves in an arc over the patient and takes multiple low-dose images that are regenerated by a computer. After 3-D imaging is complete, the machine will move back to the center and take the regular twodimensional, or standard, mammogram pictures. Srivastava said patients are exposed to similar amounts of radiation for both tomosynthesis and a 2-D conventional mammogram. WHY YOU MIGHT NEED ONE

Women who would most greatly benefit from 3-D mammography are those with dense breasts and those who have an increased risk of breast cancer. Contrary to popular belief, what constitutes “dense breasts” has nothing to do with breast size. Breast tissue is made of both fatty tissue and glandular tissue, the latter

HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE

}

of which causes the density. “A lot of women come in thinking they have dense breasts but they don’t,” said Dr. Nicole Abinanti, a radiologist with Mecklenburg Radiology Associates and director of women’s imaging for the Novant Health Breast Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Women of all ages may have dense breasts, but we often find that younger women who are premenopausal, or under age 50, as well as thinner women with less fatty tissue have dense breasts.” However, Abinanti said that all women may benefit from a 3-D mammogram, as it has been shown to increase the cancer detection rate while decreasing callback rates and minimizing overdiagnosis. Detecting cancer early has known benefits, Abinanti added, including the possibility of less-expensive, less-invasive treatments that are usually less disfiguring for a patient. DISPELLING MYTHS

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have a traditional 2-D mammogram before you can receive a 3-D mammogram. The additional

view of the 3-D mammogram is performed at the same time as the traditional mammogram. And don’t worry. Abinanti dispelled common myths that the radiation exposure or compression used are harmful. “Mammograms do not cause breast cancer or trauma to the breasts,” she said. “Compression is very important because it actually decreases the radiation dose. A lot of women don’t know that.” Patients can usually expect to receive their mammogram results in the mail within two weeks of their examination if the examination is normal. Even with 3-D mammography, there are still some findings that require additional imaging or an ultrasound. Visit NovantHealthUVA. org/women or call 703369-8073 to schedule your mammogram appointment. Same-day and walk-in appointments are available. If you think 3-D mammography is appropriate for you, simply request it when you call. Depending on your insurance plan, additional fees may apply. ❖

From IPAs to Ales Tin Cannon Brewing in Gainesville is a collaboration between home brewers Aaron Ludwig and John Hilkert. The pair, who met through their kids and wives, quickly established a partnership Tin Cannon Brewing offers at Ludwig’s house after Hilkert’s wife kicked him out of her kitchen. aficionados a plethora of options Initially intending to start a small business selling home brewing supplies, By Steve Oviatt their plans changed when the General Assembly approved a law enabling microbreweries. When Ludwig received a book detailing how to set up a microbrewery and shared it with Hilkert, Tin Cannon was off and running with the support of their families and friends. Based in a Gainesville industrial park, Tin Cannon features a cozy tasting room. Plans are underway to add a new brewery and canning line this coming winter. Meanwhile, the cozy atmosphere and “Cheers” style ambiance has gained a loyal customer base in addition to people visiting for the first time. The brewery features 10-13 beers at any given time, rotating various beers onto and off the menu every two weeks. Some beers, however, have proven to be popular enough to keep on, like the light, refreshing Virginia Blonde American Ale and the Twin Cannons Double IPA with its sweeter, malty overtones of Apricot and Peach (and 9% alcohol content). Heart of Lion Amber Ale, with its caramel overtones, was brewed to honor the Prince William Police officers who were killed and wounded earlier this year. Ludwig says his mother always wants him to bring some of the Cavalier Joe TIN CANNON BREWING Bourbon Porter, noted for its vanilla and bourbon overtones, when he and his 7679 Limestone Drive, #130 family pay her a visit. Steve Oviatt is Past President of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association who runs his own consulting business in addition to working with a number of local and international wineries. Steve acknowledges his daughter taught him everything he knows about wine. He lives in Catharpin with his wife, Nancy.
