Have you ever been bored of a room in your house and wanted to redesign it? What about when you were planning your wedding and needed fresh ideas? Or maybe you were having company over and wanted to make something absolutely mouthwatering? You spent what seemed like too much time searching Google, or cutting pictures out of every Southern Living Magazine in your home. Collecting ideas has always been a time consuming task that is now easier with a simple click of the repin and add to board buttons. With Pinterest, your own virtual pinboard, you can do everything listed above without it being a hassle. Using Pinterest is fun, easy, and doesn t require so much of the time that you never seem to have. You can save anything you like and organize it into categories or boards . Then, when you go back to look over your choices, it won t be so difficult to choose what theme you like best for your room, wedding, or what you want to serve for an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Pinterest is a virtual pinboard and picture based social media tool. It is a great way to find inspirational ideas, share cool stuff with friends, and easily keep pictures organized. Pinterest is also the third most popular social media networking site in the world, allowing you to share pins with friends, comment 6
on pins, and visit links. People love Pinterest because it’s fun, helpful, and easy to use. Plan a wedding. There are plenty of pins about hairstyles, dresses, “Save the Date” ideas, and decorations. I’ve tried a bunch of pretty hairstyles on myself, and I’m sure you could find one that you like too! Find your style. You can find endless pins of clothing styles, shoes, and nail ideas. I try tons of cool nail ideas, that aren’t that difficult to do! Redecorate your home. There are architectural ideas, furniture, DIY crafts, and theme ideas. I found a pin that was a seashell wreath, which would be great for a beach-themed bedroom. Learn new recipes. You will discover many delectable and creative recipes to choose from. Once, I found an iced coffee recipe that had coffee ice cubes instead of the usual, water-based kind. I’ve also come across a delicious recipe for sugar-cookie tacos! Don’t think that pins are limited to only those subjects! There is much more to find on Pinterest for whatever occasion! Some topics that might be of more interest to men include…
Pinterest Lingo
Board (noun): A themed set of pins Pin (noun): An image added to Pinterest Pinning (action): The act of placing an image on a board Re-pin (action): The act of reposting someone else’s image to one of your boards Pinner (noun): Someone who does the sharing (from http://socialoceanmedia.com):

Check Out Cars and Motorcycles. A man can find all sorts of pictures of Jeeps, BMWs, Mustangs, Hondas, Toyotas, Cameros, and Harley Davidsons. The selection of vehicles is endless and often updated. Search for Men’s Apparel You will find more than just women’s style on Pinterest. Men’s Apparel is also abundant. Ties, suits, colognes, watches, and boxers are only several things you will find in this area. How Businesses Are Using Pinterest. Pinterest is being used by businesses to gain more customers. ● Businesses can post pictures of the popular products they sell. For example, a restaurant can post a picture of a delicious menu item, and then link it to their website. ● A service business, like home landscaping, can pin pictures of landscaping jobs they’ve done, linking pins to their website. ● Businesses could also create a catalog of their items using boards. That way, customers can look at all the cool stuff in stock! ● A business can put a “Pin It” button onto their website so people can pin pictures from the website and share with friends. Business owners can get creative and figure out other ways to use Pinterest for a business advantage! After reading about all the helpful things available on Pinterest, I’m sure you’re just itching to know how to get started! 1. Start by going to the Pinterest website, www.pinterest.com 2. Send yourself an e-mail or ask a friend on Pinterest to invite you (If you send yourself an email, it will be several days before you get it.) Log on to your email account and find the email from Pinterest. 3. Accept the invite from your friend and sign up for Pinterest with a Facebook or Twitter account.
4. Follow the instructions given by Pinterest. Joining is only the beginning. There is more to learn once you are actually on Pinterest! Finding Stuff You Like. A good way to start off your Pinterest journey is by going to the “Everything” button at the top center of the page. Click it, and pins will show up with no specific topic. However, if you scroll over “Everything”, there will be a list of interests. If you see one that you like, click on it! Those pins will mostly be of that topic. If you wish to search for something in particular, go to the top left corner of the page, and type what you are looking for. Try not to be too specific, because often, more than one of the same picture will show up. The “Like” Button. If you see something you like, then simply “like” it! Scroll over the picture and the “like” button will show up, along with the “comment” and “re-pin” buttons. Later on, if you want to see your likes, go to the top right corner of the webpage and scroll over your name. Down a few rows will be the “Likes” button. Click on it, and you will see all of your likes. Pinning and Re-pinning. Re-pinning is very easy. Just scroll over the picture you wish to re-pin, click on
the “re-pin” button (next to “like” and “comment”), choose a board to put it in, write a comment, and click “Pin It”. To pin something, you must download the pin button onto the bookmark bar of your computer. When you are on a website and you see something you want to pin, just click the handy dandy “Pin It” button. (If you do not fully understand that, there is a tutorial video on the Pinterest website.) If you wish to pin a picture that is not on the web, upload it. Just go to the top right corner, and clicking “Add +”. Then click “Choose File” and it will pin it! If you have other questions on how to use Pinterest, go to the Pinterest website and go to the top right corner of the webpage. Scroll over “About”, and then click “Help”. There, you will find some good information on how to manage an account and other FAQs. Pinterest is fun because you can find cool ideas that aren’t widely used. It is easier and less time consuming because of pinning, liking, and categorizing into boards. Pinterest is helpful because of the hundreds of thousands of great pins you come across that help you plan out your life. It’s fun, easy, and useful. What could be better?

Creative and Cost Effective Ways to Spruce up Your Home Just in time for the Holidays By Paola McDonald
The Holidays are considered by many to be the best time of the year. They are a time for gathering, reflecting, laughing and enjoying the comforts of family and home. They are also a great reason (or excuse if you need one) to kick up your interior design a notch, before the guests arrive and the shopping begins. September is the perfect time to start working on some high impact, low budget and easy to incorporate home improvement projects to get you in the mood to entertain and celebrate. You still have some time to consider your options, create a plan and make your creative ideas a reality, just in time for turkey day. What better way to truly enjoy your holidays, and add a little “show off” factor to your home this entertaining season, than by giving your décor the spruce up it needs? This is not an article about Holiday decorating. Instead, I focus on creative touches to update your home décor and get it show off ready in time for the Holidays. You will, however be able to enjoy these ideas for years to come. Give One Wall Some Real Pizazz In one of my previous The Real Life Decorator articles I talked about the tremendous impact that simply painting your walls can have on your room. In the design world, it is the fastest, easiest way to make a big change in a space. It can infuse new life, create drama or set a backdrop and is the foundation of good interior design. With some creativity, it can also create a focal feature in a room. Consider accenting one wall in your living space with a contrasting or coordinating paint color. There are some simple tricks I use when selecting an accent wall color for my clients. The simplest trick is to find the color chip with your wall color and either go up two to three colors or down two to three colors on the same chip. This guarantees that the accent color will work with your current wall color and décor. If you are feeling more adventurous, find your existing wall color on a color wheel (you can find a color wheel on the Internet) and find the color that is exactly opposite your color on the wheel. This color should be a perfect contrast to 12

your existing wall color and will create a lot of drama or contrast, against your existing walls. Consider adding accessories and accents that incorporate this new accent color to pull together the rest of the room. The best way to choose an accent wall color, however is to look carefully at your existing décor and determine the least prominent color within your existing furnishings, artwork and accessories. For example, if you have a colorful area rug or accent pillow, find the color that is used in the smallest quantity within that item and use that as your accent color on your feature wall.
If papering your walls is too much to take at once, you can still use this dramatic option in other ways to add pops of color and texture to your room. Consider wallpapering the exposed back of a cabinet or built in for a punch of color and pattern. Tray ceilings are also an unexpected location where wallpaper can add drama without feeling overbearing.
If wallpaper still gives you the willies, there are also removable wall covering options available that can add interest and punch to a space. Wallpops by Brewster Wallcoverings (also available at your local Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams stores) are a commitment-free way to experiment with pattern, color and texture on your walls. These “wall stickers” are totally removable and reusable, so there is no getting wrong. If you miscalculate or don’t like where you’ve placed it, simply remove it and try again. They offer wonderful color and pattern options. You can mix and match or create a pattern for a wallpaper look without the commitment. Temporary wallpaper, like that created by Tempaper is another option for the wallpaper commitment-phobe. This company, found online, offers many patterns and colors in easy to install, easy to remove and easy to reposition wallpaper. It is a very cost effective, impactful and unique way to add that
pizazz to your home without worrying about the removal when you tire of the design. Faux finishing is another wall improvement technique that has regained popularity in the last few years. This is due in part to faux finishers developing new and unique finishes that mimic the look of wallpaper and add depth and texture to a space. It is also due to the fact that several paint companies, including Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and Ralph Lauren have created easy to use faux finishes in a can. Their two to three step products make creating your own faux finish easy and inexpensive. If doing it yourself is not your thing, consider hiring a local faux finisher, like Michelle Mayberry of Special FX Studio to create a beautiful, customized faux finish that will be the talk of the neighborhood. You can take the same approach as above and select one wall, ceiling or special piece of furniture to get the impact of this beautiful art form.

Updating your walls is not limited to the all-powerful paintbrush. There are some additional wall décor options that are unique, interesting and sure to have your guests pining for the name of your interior designer.
Wallpaper has made a tremendous comeback in the last few years. Homeowners once afraid of the aftermath of wallpaper (the treacherous removal of it) are now jumping for joy, as manufacturers have developed easier to install and remove wallpaper options. The colors, patterns and textures available are extraordinary and the prices are much more reasonable than you might think. Your local Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams stores carry a large variety of wallpaper books, instructions for installing and recommendations for installers if you choose to hire one.
Changing out accessories and trying a new furniture layout can make a room feel brand new and finished.
Try a New Furniture Layout Many of us get “stuck” with the idea that your furniture has to stay where it is or that there is no other way to arrange it. You would be amazed what moving around a few pieces can do for a room. I suggest taking an afternoon, asking a few strong friends for help (and/or just purchasing some furniture sliders at your local home improvement store) and trying out several new furniture layouts until you land on a new and unique arrangement for your space. Don’t limit yourself to furnishings within that one space. Think about furniture pieces in other rooms that could fill in gaps and replace items for better flow, more function or a more stylish look. Also consider unique ways of setting your furniture. For example, sometimes placing pieces on an angle is just what the room needs to create flow and focus. spruce up your home continued on page 16

Flowers, coordinated bedding, and a sweet treat can make your guests feel right at home. Only problem, they may never want to leave...
Change out Your Accessories
Perk Up Guest Accommodations
An inexpensive way to make a powerful change in your space is to replace your accessories. Items like accent pillows, throws, vases, wall décor, area rugs, mirrors and knick-knacks are easy and inexpensive to change out and can change the entire feel of a room. You can bring in more traditional Holiday inspired accessories or be more daring and try out some wilder, more intense colors and patterns that can create a big splash. Turquoises, purples, oranges and lime greens, as well as geometric patterns are very in right now and can really create drama and interest in a space. Local stores like Home Goods, Pier 1 Imports and Kirklands offer fantastic options at great prices. Keep your old accessories for later in the year when you may want to mix and match or change the mood of your room again.
If you are expecting overnight guests for the Holidays, why not make them feel at home, or better yet, like they are staying in a fancy hotel? A new duvet, a beautiful throw and some mix and match accent pillows can create a welcoming, comfortable bed. Consider adding a magazine and/or book basket or rack to the room. Fresh towels in colors that coordinate with your bedding will give the space a “decorator” feeling. Consider fresh flowers and a bowl of chocolates next to the bed for an added touch of welcome. Think about how your guests will need to use the space. Some guests could use a place to work on a laptop and plug in their cell phones. Consider also that guests typically have luggage so a well placed luggage rack or other creative option for placing their luggage can help to make them feel more at home. Also, don’t forget to consider lighting in the room. Like in any other well-designed space, consider both overhead lighting as well as task lighting for reading and working. Lowes offers wonderful options for overhead lighting and Home Goods has an amazing selection of very well priced lamps that can add both function and style to your guest quarters. The upcoming Holiday season can be a great excuse to give your home décor a little kick. With these budget friendly, high impact, easy to implement ideas you should have your family and Holiday guests “oohing” and “aahing” at your design creativity. And the best part is, you will be able to enjoy your hard work for years to come.

Fauquier Health recently welcomed two new general surgeons to its staff of physicians. In addition to establishing themselves as highly trained and skilled experts in the general surgery field, both physicians believe communication and trust are the cornerstones of the doctor-patient relationship. “I think that a lot of questioning early on, and especially during the decision-making process, forms the foundation of patient care,” says Kip Dorsey, M.D. “Communication builds trust between the physician and the patient. Just being up front with each other, being on the same page together, and both knowing what’s going on throughout the whole process, is how you develop that bond.” Dr. Dorsey recently relocated to Warrenton after completing medical school and residency at the University of Oklahoma, where he gained valuable experience using the most up-to-date procedures and technology for a broad range of surgical specialties, including general, trauma, critical care, breast, and pediatric.
William Cloud, M.D., agrees. One of the things that impressed him the most during his initial visits to the area was the level of trust various community members expressed for the health system. “The first few times I visited Warrenton, I asked people in restaurants, gas stations and throughout the community how they felt about the hospital,” Dr. Cloud explains. “They all had positive opinions, which reinforced my desire to join the team. And I want patients to know they can trust us. If they come to visit Dr. Dorsey or myself, I want them to know they will receive excellent care.” Dr. Cloud recently joined Fauquier Health after practicing for 29 years in North Carolina, where he averaged 1,000 surgical cases per year. Some of his specialty areas include abdominal and GI surgery, endoscopy, complex foregut surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, multisystem trauma, vascular and hepatic surgery.

Summer Surprises I love roaming my land in the early spring looking for any sign that the cold is ending and green is returning. Swelling treebuds, a red Peony tip and a single Snowdrop are all exciting finds. As the season progresses my garden keeps giving me new buds and flowers to discover and anticipate. Late summer is a different story. The Daisies are done, the Roses are feeling the heat, the hanging baskets look as lush as they did yesterday and the Chrysanthemums started blooming last month. There are two cures for late summer boredom: Abelia and Clethra. Abelias are mid size shrubs with small, shiny green leaves. They are covered with little, white, heatproof flowers during the summer lull. When the rest of my garden looks tired and baked the Abelias are fresh and happy. Clethra is also known as Summersweet. And, “how sweet it is!” Loaded with 2 to 3 inch candles of deliciously fragrant flowers, Clethras delight me just like the Abelias. The sad irony of these two shrubs is that they don’t look like much when everyone is racing to the garden stores in the spring, full of planting fever. People go home with trunks loaded with Hydrangeas and Roses, having walked right by the plain green Abelias and Clethras. You still might be able to find these now. Or make a note to get them next spring for a summer surprise.

Antioch Baptist Church marks milestone anniversary
The original Antioch Baptist Church was built of stone, and served from 1842-1901, when it was replaced by the present structure.
by John T. Toler
On Sept. 30, Antioch Baptist Church in the village of Waterfall west of Haymarket, will observe the 175th anniversary of its founding with a day of prayer, recollection and song. Present at the celebration will be congregants with roots in the church going back many years, if not generations.
Branch Baptist in Halfway, Va., who wanted to have a Baptist church closer to their community. The organizers were John C. Herndon, who would serve as the first pastor; George Love, Church Clerk Protem; and Elder William F. Broaddus.
In many ways, the history of Antioch Baptist Church reflects the Christian traditions celebrated there: birth, teachings, trials and suffering, a temporary death, and rebirth.
The congregation of six males and thirteen females first met in a small log cabin on the property built by William E. Foley, and previously used as a schoolhouse at Poplar Hill, the Foley property east of Waterfall.
The church was established on April 22, 1837 by nineteen members of Long

He was courteous and gentle when alone with his family as when in the presence of visitors.” “In ante-bellum days, services were held at Antioch on Saturdays for Negroes, so that the slaves might be at home on Sundays to care for the white folk, who apparently did most of their visiting on the Sabbath,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places and Its People. Hard times in Waterfall Even with the stability brought by good, consistent leadership and a devoted congregation, the first 50 years were difficult. The last three years of the Civil War were particularly hard, as many of the men had gone off to fight, and services were held just once a month, or less. Even after the war, times were hard.

Antioch Baptist Church held its first Homecoming (originally called the “All Day Meeting”) in 1922, “…followed by a week of protracted meetings, with services at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., at which time 27 people united with the church by baptism,” according to church records. “Baptismal services took place in the creek that flows through the churchyard, by damming the stream with rocks to get the depth of water needed.”
In January 1926, the Sinclair heirs put the old log cabin up for sale, and it was purchased by the Antioch Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society, which Wrote Church Clerk John held the property in A. A frame building soon rose in its place, appearing today much as it did a century ago. The Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery holds

Changes in the demographics wrought by World War II and the loss of long-time members took their toll on Antioch, and by the mid-1950s, the church had no full-time pastor. “Due to an ever-dwindling congregation, we were unable to continue services,” according to church records. “The church was closed on Oct. 1, 1962, except for the Annual Homecoming Service on the second

In addition to petitioning the Haymarket Baptist Church to receive “into full membership” former members of Antioch who wished to join, the agreement signed July 14, 1964 also gave Haymarket title to the property, and “such funds as may be in the church treasury.” REV. On July 22, 1996, the new congregation held a followup meeting where critical issues including the reelection of trustees, church organization, and a visit to the church were discussed. Former Haymarket Baptist Church pastor Rev. Larry Lee addressed the 28 people assembled there, touching on the theological issues that caused the division, and urging the two churches to work together. Later, Rev. Lee was asked to serve as interim pastor until a permanent pastor could be found. He accepted the call, and would serve the church as Antioch’s pastor until 2007.

Rev. Dr. Billy Tatum, who served as pastor of Long Branch Baptist Church from 1990 to 2004, became pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in March 2010. Ordained in 1971, Dr. Tatum holds a bachelor of arts, master of divinity degree, and a doctor of philosophy degree. “Yes, ‘Billy’ is my first name, not William. Everyone who participates in my boot camp obviously wants to experience optimal results, which is why I tell all new recruits the best thing they can do for themselves is to buy a cooler and a variety of containers to carry their food throughout the day. Your fitness and body composition results are tied directly to your capacity to get frequent meals (once every 3 – 4 hours), the right foods, and the right portion sizes throughout the day. For this reason, meal preparation is crucial to the success of your diet. “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail,” and this is very true when it comes to meal preparation. If you are not prepared, chances are very likely that you will eat the wrong foods and more calories than you expend throughout the day. As I regularly remind all of my clients, you can never out-exercise a bad diet, and nutrition is responsible for 70% of the results you will achieve in any fitness program. What I suggest is that you prepare the next day’s meals the night before, or even better, prepare several meals in advance on a Sunday afternoon. Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the grill by grilling chicken breasts, kabobs, tuna, salmon, steak, or whatever happens to be your protein of choice. And don’t just limit the grill to proteins either. Complete your meals by adding your favorite carbohydrates in the form of vegetables and/or fruits. For example, a chicken breast, grilled peaches, and a sweet potato is one of my favorite quick and easy meals. Once you’re done with the grill, pack all these foods in individual containers and store them in your refrigerator. For the next few days you’re all set with delicious and healthy meals. If you think you will be able to stick to a sound nutritional plan without being prepared, you are in for a surprise (and disappointment). You will either end up eating the wrong kinds of food, missing meals, or eating too much of the wrong foods. And in addition, you will definitely end up spending more money because eating out is not cheap. So be prepared and do not sabotage your hard work and progress! Eating out even just a few times per week at a restaurant can cost you hundreds of calories and slow (or halt) your progress. “Rob “Gunny” Barker is a Master Fitness Trainer and owner of Gladiator Fitness Boot Camp, which was voted N. Extremely balanced for a malt-forward beer. Very clean. A real treat to enjoy.-JEdmund @ BeerAdvocate.com This beer is all barley, all the time. It’s a malt soda that smells like bread and caramel with just the faintest hint of earthy hops and tastes like, well, a really good, toasty lager. It doesn’t shock; it seduces.-Daniel Fromson of Young&Hungry blog
