The Residents and Visitors of Haymarket are the Real Winners!

2013

T E K R A M Y HA

This month, we are pleased to present the winners in the Third Annual Best of Haymarket Awards. We had a record number of ballots cast again this year (over 2100). Your responses were a great reflection of what the community has to offer. Family stores, new shops and long-time landmarks led the way. We had a number of ‘New Winners’ this year, and the most popular category was Best Casual/Family Restaurant. We had a handful of very tightly contested races, all of which came down to the final day after some back and forth. While there were some surprises, in our opinion, there were no disappointments. So, whether you agree or disagree with the voting public, please take the time to discover some new local favorites for yourself. We

consider the Best Of list just a small “slice of the pie” that is the hundreds of wonderful businesses, places and people the community has to offer. We believe we have become an important part of building this community by providing history, resources and ideas from various sections of our region. Our advertisers love our market penetration and affordability, and their ROI has helped fuel success locally. Thank you to the readers of The Haymarket Lifestyle Magazine for caring enough to vote. Thank you to all the writers, photographers and donors for who contribute each and every month. It takes a big team to bring you this magazine each month, and we would like to thank Krysta Norman for steering another great issue and Mike Tedeschi for overseeing the voting once again.

And the winners are….

History

A Sanctuary for the Faithful, Saved for All By John T. Toler

Buckland Church has played different roles and survived change

The little chapel situated on a knoll on the south side of Lee Highway at Buckland has served several congregations – and seen a lot of history – over the past 157 years. While the petition establishing the town of “Buck Land” in 1797 did not mention a church, records show that a Methodist church known a St. Luke’s existed in Buckland as early as 1778, under the ministry of Rev. John Littlejohn of Leesburg. It is believed that architect William Buckland, for whom the town was named, designed this church.

Built in 1856, the church at Buckland was an unpainted frame structure until 1962, when it was taken over by the Gainesville Methodist Church and lovingly restored by members of its congregation as an Outpost Sunday School. Courtesy of Mrs. Evelyn Lunsford.

By 1835, Buckland had “a house of public worship free for all denominations,” according to Joseph Martin’s New and Comprehensive Gazetteer of Virginia and the District of Columbia. By then, the Warrenton-toAlexandria Turnpike had bisected the town, with parts of the community on both sides of the road. It is believed that the present frame church built in 1856 is located near the site of the original St. Luke’s. It occupies a one-acre lot that was donated to the congregation of the Buckland Methodist Episcopal Church by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hite. The agreement required that any church built there be available to other denominations and “evangelical societies” when not needed by the Methodists. The new house of worship was called St. Mark’s Methodist Church. It was affiliated with the pre-Civil War Methodist Church-South, and part of the circuit that included Methodist churches at Sudley and Centreville.

Restored by Thomas Ashe Jr. of Buckland, the church has been the home several congregations, most recently the Redeemed Church of Jesus Christ, which has worshipped there since 2011. 8

In a survey done in 1978 for the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission (File 76-116), the original church building was described as a small, one-story structure covered with unpainted, four-and-a-half inch lap, plain chestnut weatherboards. It sanctuary continued on page 10 Haymarket Lifestyle

measured about 30 feet wide and 50 feet long, and had a metal-covered gable roof. Other notable architectural features were the box cornices, single cornerboards, and nine-over-nine pane windows on the sides.

Rev. Melvin Lee Steadman served as pastor of the Gainesville Methodist Church from 19611965, and was the force behind the creation of the Outpost Sunday School at Buckland.

Inside the building, the walls were plastered, with plain trim. There was a balcony across the rear of the sanctuary, accessed by a stairway on the left side. Buried in front of the church are James W. Hunton (1836-1903), his wife, Rosa Love Hunton (1838-1917), and Addison Burgess (1811-1882). A small, fenced-in area nearby is believed to hold the unmarked graves of the Hite family. In later years, gravesites were located on the west side of the church, and on the east side of the lane that once led back to the c. 1805 Isaac Meeks house. During the 19th century, the most notable lay preacher at St. Mark’s was the colorful and outspoken Rev. John Trone (1802-1885), who lived in the house on the turnpike immediately east of the church. A blacksmith as well as a Methodist pastor, Brother Trone also preached at the Sudley and Centreville churches on occasion. He and his wife Delilah (d. 1876) and their daughter Julia Trone Compton (1839-1914) are buried in southwest corner of the church cemetery. With the establishment of the Gainesville Methodist Church in 1884-

86, the congregation at St. Mark’s dwindled. The two churches merged in Gainesville in 1907, and the building at Buckland sold to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Haymarket. For the next 25 years, St. Paul’s used the church, adding a small, single-story addition to the back providing space for a Sunday School room and an altar cove with a gothic-style window. The church was sold again in 1932, this time to a Pentecostal group, who renamed it the Harrison Memorial Chapel. The next owners were Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Carrico, who purchased the property for use by an Assembly of God congregation.

Return to Methodist Roots In early April 1962, the Northern Virginia Methodist Board of Missions purchased the building from the Carricos. The purpose of the acquisition was the first of its kind in the U.S., and part of a plan “… adopted by the Board of Education of the Methodist Church suggesting that local churches open Outpost Sunday schools to meet needs in areas where no Methodist church is in existence,” according to a report in the April 19, 1962 edition of the Manassas Journal Messenger.

The grave of Rev. John Steadman Trone (18021885), the first pastor of the church founded in 1856, is in the church cemetery. 10

Rev. Melvin Lee Steadman (19321987), pastor of the Gainesville Methodist Church, was a well-known historian and author as well as a

churchman, and embraced the idea of an outpost church in Buckland. He attended a meeting of the Association of Methodist Historical Societies in St. Louis in April 1962, where he presented the plans for the Outpost church, which would be called St. Luke’s, in recognition of the earlier church there. According to the newspaper report. “…the Association has recommended to the next General Conference that the plan used at Buckland be followed all over America.” Once again part of the Gainesville Methodist Church, the re-consecrated building at Buckland was completely renovated. Rev. Steadman organized the effort, and many members of the congregation pitched in with labor, money, materials and expertise. Sixty gallons of white paint was used on the outside of the building, and a new front porch added. Inside the church, pews, an organ, and chandelier lighting were installed, and a general facelift completed. “Those who helped this week were Billy Bolt, who finished the electrical wiring and hung the chandelier, and David Barbee, William H. “Buster” Clem, Marvin Carter, Joe Strawderman, Vernon Leitch and Joe Campbell, who did the carpentry,” according to Mrs. sanctuary continued on page 12 Haymarket Lifestyle

Vernon Veitch, a member of the church and the Buckland correspondent writing for the Manassas Journal Messenger. “Dick, Dick Jr., Alvin and Lee Jenkins moved the pews and organ in, and painting was done by Pete, Evelyn, Joyce, Jerry and Steve Hamlett, and Nettie and Pattie Fletcher.” Donations in kind were also made, including building supplies given by Jimmie Gossom, and the candlesticks, pulpit Bible and Book of Remembrances provided by Dr. and Mrs. Earle L. Meyers of Arlington. The pews and communion rail were given by Bethel Methodist Church, and installed by Vernon Wood. Mrs. Nathalie Harrison Roberts contributed the baptismal font. Rev. Steadman conducted the first worship service at the renewed St. Luke’s on Easter Sunday, April 14, 1963. “It was a very historic occasion for Buckland, and the sound of the church bell ringing out on Sunday morning, calling the people to worship, was 12

a sweet sound to our ears,” wrote Mrs. Veitch. “R.J. Wadsworth of New Baltimore was the guest organist, and the flowers at the altar were given by Mrs. S. C. Lunsford, Mrs. Grace Bear, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Brewster, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hamlett and Miss Loretta Chapman.” A meaningful part of the opening service was the baptism of 13-monthold Jennifer Lynne Kennedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert I. Kennedy of Buckland, “…thereby becoming the first baby to be baptized at the first service in the re-opened church,” according to Mrs. Veitch. “Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hamlett were godparents. The baby’s maternal grandmother, Mrs. Edith Rider of Warrenton, was present.” On Sept. 27, 1963, members of the Methodist Historical Society of Northern Virginia gathered at St. Luke’s, where the chief speaker was Rev. James L. Duley, of Alexandria, who served as pastor of the Gainesville Methodist Church from 1947 to 1957. Rev. Duley’s presentation was

entitled, “Historically Speaking, What is My Church?” Also speaking was Mrs. Veitch, who recounted the history of Buckland, and the churches that had served the community. Following the meeting at St. Luke’s, the historical group held its regular monthly meeting and supper at Cerro Gordo in Buckland, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Brewster.

Decline and Rebirth After Rev. Steadman was called to serve another church in 1965, attendance at St. Luke’s dwindled, and it became increasingly difficult to justify holding services there and maintaining the building. The church was closed in the late 1960s. During the time St. Luke’s was not being used, church members “Buster” Clem and Floyd Lunsford removed the heavy iron bell from the steeple, and stored it downstairs. Still concerned that the bell might be stolen, Mr. Clem took it to his home near Gainesville for safekeeping. sanctuary continued on page 14 Haymarket Lifestyle

In the 1970s, the Northern Virginia United Methodist Board of Missions used the building for “The Mustard Seed,” a thrift store and distribution center for goods to be donated to the needy. Later, an antique store briefly operated there. By 1988, the building was in poor condition, and the churchyard cluttered with junk. The missions board overseeing the property was ready to have the building demolished. But that would not be allowed to happen. Mr. Thomas Ashe Sr. lives in the historic c. 1799 stone tavern across Lee Highway from the church, and has been active with the Buckland Preservation Society for many years. Along with his daughter Elizabeth A. Hollingsworth, he purchased and restored the Rev. John Trone house, and also owns the unrestored Isaac Meeks house behind the church. When he heard of plans to demolish the church, Mr. Ashe confronted the missions board, advising them, “The Boss up there wouldn’t appreciate that!” Convinced that he was right, the board sold the church to Mr. Ashe, and soon afterward he restored the building as a house of worship, and cleaned up the grounds and cemetery. Mr. Ashe also acquired the old church bell and planned to replace it in the steeple, but determined that the structure would need additional repairs to be able to handle the weight. In December 1990, the congregation of the Apostolic Faith United Pentecostal Church was the first group to lease the church and hold worship services there. Other denominations would follow, and since December 2011, members of the Redeemed Church of Jesus Christ, led by Elder Michael E. Robinson of

Opal, have worshipped in the historic building. An independent Christian church, it has about 35 members, and conducts men’s, women’s ministries and youth outreach programs, in addition to regular Sunday worship services and Sunday School. The church’s message, “Joining Hands, Changing Hearts” invites “… persons of all races and ethnic backgrounds to join hands in fellowship with God,” according to Herman Robinson, the brother of the pastor.

The old church is an integral part of the Buckland National Register Historic District. With owners who are committed to preserving and maintaining the property as a house of worship, it shall continue to serve its original divine purpose for many more years. The efforts of those involved should please “the Boss up there,” as well as the congregations – present and future – that call it their home.

the garden

Lady

No More Bullies

At the end of July, if you stood in the entrance to my garden, you would have seen Daisies and Coneflowers and Butterfly Bushes and a great swath of pink and white flowers – Yarrow and Gaura and Rose Campion. It made a wonderful impression from a distance but if you tried to walk in on the path of blue stones you would have had to fight your way through weeds and aggressive flower stalks that were either growing between the stones or laying over them. When the garden was young I planted a Broom with dark pink fragrant flowers. I looked forward to it blooming every spring. I even planted a sky blue Iris near it to make bloom time more dazzling. However, it made the garden look off balance in the winter, being the only evergreen, so I planted two more, this time yellow to balance it out. As everything grew, the Broom, Yarrow, Gaura, Violets, Plumbago, Campion and Brazilian Verbena all started getting very pushy. Each flourished in its own way: got big, spread seeds or spread on traveling roots. I knew there were other plants in there but they were getting hard to find. So over a three day period I waged war on the bullies. I relentlessly cut back or dug out, filling my truck up more than once. Not only was

order restored to the garden but it was easy to feed and mulch around the plants that remained. Everyone has their own definition of a plant bully. I have eliminated Iris, Lavender and Daisies from clients’ gardens. I just trimmed them back in mine. I am currently digging out Azaleas that got all messed up with Nandina suckers in one garden and I removed giant grasses in another. It just shows that bullying is personal – even in a garden, but you don’t have to take it. All of that cutting and digging and hauling really did create some large bare areas in my garden. I am going to fill those spaces with plants that behave themselves like Penstemon and Verbascum. I will add some less pushy reseeders like Moonbeam Coreopsis and Blue Flax. And yesterday when I was buying some Abelias for a current job I found a Francis Meilland rose. It was bred to celebrate the man who created the color catalog for roses, refrigerated storage, patent registration and the Peace rose. This beautiful light pink rose is an award winner in Europe and America for growing in no-spray conditions as well as its classic Hybrid Tea shape and fragrance. So don’t hesitate to dig out the bullies, you will create room for a beauty.

Fauquier Health Fauquier Hospital Offers New Low-Dose CT Scanners Fauquier Hospital is installing two new Toshiba CT scanners (computerized tomography) designed to deliver a significantly lower radiation dose. Karla Kenefake-Hymans, director of the hospital’s Medical Imaging department, says, “With the new CT scanners, typical CT scans will demonstrate up to a 70 percent reduction in radiation exposure; head/brain CT scans will provide an approximately 50 percent reduction. The new scanner technology gives us the ability to acquire the best possible images at the lowest possible radiation and contrast doses.”

By the end of November, Fauquier Hospital will have two new low-dose CT scanners. CT scans combine a series of crosssectional X-ray images, or slices, of the organs, bones and other soft tissues. The advanced computer software technology allows the images to be viewed from different aspects, allowing the radiologist (the M.D. who reviews the images and reports the findings back to the ordering physician) to look at each slice individually or in combination. In some cases, CT images may be combined to create 3-D images. As a result, CT scan images can provide much more information than ordinary X-rays. Radiologist Dr. David Reilly, M.D., explained that both new scanners are 80 slice scanners. “They replace our current Emergency Department and Medical Imaging Department CT scanners, which have been 16 and 32 slice, respectively. The new equipment will be faster, in terms of scan time as well as 18

reconstruction time,” he said. “This will allow Fauquier Hospital staffers to complete scans even more quickly, which is especially important for Emergency Department patients.”

population, but will benefit everyone.” He added, “In addition, the table weight and bore size are increased to accommodate larger patients and help with claustrophobic patients.”

The scanner in the Medical Imaging Department will also have CT fluoroscopy to provide guidance when performing interventional procedures or biopsies. One of the new scanners will be ready for patients in late September, the other in early November.

Dr. Reilly said, “We are very excited about the dose reduction capability. Improvements in CT scanner technology allow for significant reduction in radiation dose and still produce high-quality images. This is especially important for our pediatric

Healthy

You have to Make Everyone is always looking for the “quick fix” and the “easy way out,” and that is particularly true when it comes to getting fit and losing fat. Turn on the TV and you’re sure to see an example of what I’m talking about; such as, “12 Minutes a Day to a Super Model Body,” “The Amazing Ab Roller,” or my alltime favorite, the “Velcro Belt” that you strap around your waist and the fat is guaranteed to melt off!”…What a joke! These are just a few examples of all the nonsense and misleading ads you’ll see on TV, in magazine ads and smeared across the internet. It’s time for someone to cut through the crap and tell the truth about how much effort it takes to develop a lean, strong and healthy body. What most people want to hear is that you don’t have to work hard; that all you need is the latest fad diet, fat loss pill, exercise gadget, workout video, or some other magic formula. What you really need to hear is that it takes time, discipline, hard work and sacrifice. The most popular excuse (by far) for failing to exercise consistently is, “I don’t have time.” Not having time to exercise is not a valid reason at all, and I don’t buy it for a second, here’s why. We all have the same 168 hours a week, and we’re all busy, but some people get in shape and others don’t. Why is that? Here’s the answer - People who successfully get lean and strong –and stay that way – have made training and eating right a priority. They MAKE time, even if that means getting up an hour earlier every day or giving up a couple hours of watching television or surfing the net at night. Here’s the bottom line folks - Successful people use every hour wisely and never waste time on unproductive and meaningless activities.

the Time The truth is that you will always make time for whatever is most important to you. If it’s important for you to spend two hours every night on Facebook, you’ll make the time. If watching a TV show every night is important to you, you’ll make the time. If playing the latest game on your iPhone is important to you, you’ll make the time, and if your health and fitness are important to you, you’ll make the time. You have to make exercising and eating right a top priority in your life. The average person in the United States watches five hours of TV per day, and yet those same people still use “no time’ as their number one excuse for why they don’t exercise! Building a lean, strong, and healthy body should take no more than 3 – 4 hours of exercise per week. As I remind my clients, “Take care of your body because it’s the only place you have to live.” You’ll never “find” the time; you must “MAKE” the time.

$tudents & Finance It’s that time of year, when parents of high school seniors and college freshmen are helping them organize for this big year ahead of them. Some will meet it with high anticipation, while others will feel the anxiety associated with being responsible for themselves. I remember having a conversation with my daughter when she first got her credit card. She announced to me that she had paid her bill, well before the due date. I asked her,”what was the amount that you paid?” She replied,”the amount they told me to pay.” When I asked to see her bill and the amount that she paid, it was a great educational opportunity. She indeed had paid what the credit card company highlighted as the amount to be paid. It was the minimum amount due. Luckily, she had plenty of time to pay the rest of the amount that she had charged that month to avoid a finance charge by the credit card company. Does this sound familiar to you? Sadly, our children have not been well educated in the proper use of credit, much to the detriment of their credit standing, and their future access to credit. It is never too soon to begin educating young people on budgeting and finance. Being able to demonstrate to them the

value of the money that they earn from chores, early jobs, and even what they receive in gifts will arm them with the knowledge to live responsibly, and also to avoid being a victim. As young people get their first jobs, or enter college and live away from home for the first time, they will be faced with offers and decisions that they should be ready to face. Some will need to explore financing for their college education. Student loans are debts that could impact them for a long time after they graduate with a college degree. Failure to repay the loans on a timely basis will impact their ability to buy a car, or even obtain insurance for a car. The time to help them develop budgets for themselves is now. Using a checkbook register, or better yet, computer based financial software such as Intuit’s Quicken or Microsoft Money will provide the means to develop the habit of managing their money. With an internet connection, transactions can be downloaded and reconciled within minutes. Making a schedule to do this will also create a discipline of knowing where they stand. Make a weekly appointment with the checkbook to make sure the numbers add up. A relatively new low-cost internetbased program called HelloWallet (www.

hellowallet.com) is a great way to track finances, and includes good tips and information on finances and budgeting at your fingertips. As our young people prepare to embark on independent living , we should send them off with three important lessons: ● Know how much money it costs to live, and don’t spend more than you have. ● Pay your bills on time. ● Stand up for yourself. If you have been overcharged, told that you owe something that you don’t, or have purchased something that doesn’t work, don’t be intimidated into walking away. Perseverance is the key, and you’ll be satisfied that you did the right thing.

MEET OUR MEMBER TERRI AUFMUTH Cornerstone Landscape

Gaining over 20 years of experience as a Garden Center Manager and Landscape Designer, Terri Aufmuth teamed up with a former business partner to start Cornerstone Landscaping in 1997. Choosing to pursue her own career has lifted any limitations on design, enabling Terri to design freely through landscape design, installation and hardscape installations. Terri, along with Cornerstone Landscaping have unbreakable ties to the community starting with her education at Stonewall Jackson High School and becoming a Haymarket resident in 1979. Both have been proud local supporters of the Haymarket community and they contribute to local schools and nonprofit organizations by supporting fundraising events. Cornerstone Landscaping has worked closely with Linton Hall School on some of their projects and enjoys being a dynamic part of the community. Joining the HGBA in 2011, Terri has been an active member by attending monthly meetings and accepting a position of leadership as a member of the Board of Directors in 2013. She kindly shared her favorite business tips: • Get involved in the Community. Volunteer. You will receive way more than you give. • Follow through, return calls and don’t underestimate the value of a thank you.

Port City Brewing Company Derecho Common The Beer:

As the name indicates, the Derecho Common by Port City Brewing Company located in Alexandria is inspired by a derecho-caused accident. Port City feared a loss of 13,000 gallons of beer when the massive storm initially hit Virginia. Due to the effects of the power outage caused by the storm, Port City lost one of the tanks of beer. This tank fermented at a higher than normal temperature, causing the brew master to try out a style of beer known as “steam beer” created in San Francisco, hence the birth of Derecho Common.

The Brewery: Port City’s name is derived from Alexandria’s rich and colorful history as an important colonial seaport, which later becomes a major brewing center and home to the largest brewery in the southern United States. Port City Brewing Company strives to revive, celebrate and continue this rich brewing tradition right outside the Nation’s Capital.

The Reviews: “The Derecho Common is crisp with a creamier texture than the traditional Port City lager. The green apple and lime characteristics make for a crisp edge to the hoppy finish.”
