The Best of the Best That’s what we are calling the winners of the Fifth Annual Best of Haymarket Readers’ Poll sponsored by The Haymarket Lifestyle Magazine and Piedmont Press & Graphics. We received thousands of ballots which demonstrate the passion that all of you have for your favorite places. The benefits of a contest like this is huge. Readers’ choice contests are sources of pride for local businesses; they ignite people around their favorite places and, most importantly, create more awareness and traffic for neighborhood shops. Our goal has been to invigorate the community and to make you aware that you have choices so you will continue to shop locally, even if you are not satisfied with a store you are currently using. We hope that this contest has been a nice boost to the local economy. There is quite a diversity of winners with a mixture of large, small, new and established organizations claiming the title of “Best Of”. Some of the voting was very close, coming down to the last day of balloting while others won by overwhelming margins. There were pleasant surprises this year among winners as several independent, owner-operated establishments took on larger chains or franchises. The best part, though, is that all of them are from Haymarket & Gainesville. They contribute to our community, provide goods and services and offer jobs to area residents. These businesses all support our tax base and help make the community the vibrant place it is today.

The Beneits of Strengthening Your Core Through Yoga by Liba Spyros

In this partner pose, the person in high plank is demonstrating a very strong core by being able to support the weight of another person on her back!

id you overexert yourself this summer - getting sore or injured? It could be because your core is not properly balanced. Harvard Medical School and Harvard Health Publications (H.M.S. & H.H.P) state that the core is the most critical section of the body. The core muscles act as the sturdy central link in a chain between your upper and lower body. A weak core causes a kink in this chain, which leads to back pain and injury. Virtually all aspects of your everyday activities involve the use of your core to stabilize and support your body as it moves. Such everyday activities including putting on your shoes, normal housework, standing still, looking behind you and other normally considered mundane tasks. In our normal jobs, we rely upon our core in twisting and lifting. Sitting down for an extended period of time also exerts
your core muscles, especially when you maintain a proper posture. Poor posture while sitting and standing leads to increase back strain as the muscles are out of alignment. One of the most significant causes of poor posture is a weak core. Many exercise programs focus on the abs (abdominal) muscles, as many of us desire six-pack abs. According to H.H.P. and H.M.S., the core is not limited to the abs. The core includes the back (lumbar), side (obliques), and the pelvic floor muscles in addition the abdominal muscles. When strengthening the core, it is important to balance your workout to address all these muscle groups so they work together in harmony. Otherwise, the chain that links the upper and lower body will kink causing an imbalance. This imbalance strains the muscles and if left uncorrected over time, may result in back pain because the spine is unduly strained. H.M.S. went on the say that a
In this pose your abdominals stretch and lengthen. The legs are engaged, there is no compression in the lower back, and the shoulders are down the back. 8

healthy muscle is not only strong, but also flexible. The core muscles are no exception. They need to be both strong and flexible. This allows freedom of movement and proper support. A strong flexible core is critical to enhancing performance in the activities we pursue in either our fitness routines or as weekend warriors. Popular activities powered by a strong and flexible core may include: golf, tennis, biking, running, swimming, and countless other sports. In fact, a strong and flexible core also enhances sexual activity. A proper yoga practice led by a certified instructor, will exercise all the core muscles by strengthening and increasing flexibility throughout the synchronized movement of a dynamic practice. Vinyasa flow, a powerful yoga discipline, utilizes the whole body and the natural forces of gravity to provide an all-encompassing core workout. The practice engages the entire abdominal girdle, promoting synchronicity and causing the different muscle groups to work according to their naturally intended design. For example, Surya Namaskar A and B (Sun salutations A & B), a standard feature in a typical Vinyasa flow class, incorporates a variety of the standing poses (Mountain and Warrior 1) followed by high-plank, low-plank, upward facing dog and downward facing dog poses. All of these poses work in harmony together to create the perfect abdominal core and full body integration workout. All the muscles of your core, as well as other muscle groups, work together in unison during the flow of movement. This is a healthier alternative to isolation exercises, where one muscle in the group gets overdeveloped to the detriment of the muscles in not only that group but also the
reciprocal muscle groups. Have you ever noticed someone who appears to have a strong core, six-pack abs, but suffers from a sore back? This could be the result of over developing the abdominal muscles while under developing the erector spinae or oblique muscles. Also, while the desired six-pack shows a lean physique, it does not show “being in-shape”. “Being in-shape” is more than looking lean or being strong - it is a balance of strength AND flexibility. How many people do you know look strong, but can barely touch their toes, can hardly twist to grab something from the back seat of their car (when sitting in the front passenger seat), or who look stiff when they move. This is not being in-shape. A Vinyasa flow yoga practice exercises the whole body resulting in improved strength and flexibility. Many elite athletes use yoga to compliment their fitness programs. They are finding that the various muscle groups of their body work together in unison, improving their overall performance and making them less prone to injury. When looking for a vinyasa yoga studio, it is important to find a studio that makes you feel welcomed. It is also paramount to choose a studio that has a stable core group of instructors who improve upon their education in both physiology and mindfulness training. Finally, find a studio that helps you achieve your balance (see our June article). It is important to feel supported and not judged. You are where you are physically from devoting time and energy to your career and family. The instructors and the community as a whole can assist you in developing a healthy positive mindset, as well as strong and flexible body.
For newer students they will do photo 1 to their ability, and photo 2 to their ability. Pose 3 and 4 are progressive poses for the more advanced practitioner. There is always room to grow and places to modify. Photo 1) From Downward facing dog, lift your leg high. This engages your hip flexors, which activate your core muscles Photo 2) Bring your knee to your triceps. Your weight shifts into towards your hands. Firing up your core to lift your ribs. Photo 3) If you are ready to go deeper, simply bend your elbows to come into low plank pose. Shoulder girdle now engages, abdominals integrate and your weight shifts forward Photo 4) The next stage of this pose engages your entire core muscles: pelvic floor, obliques, erector spinae, hip flexors, and abdominals. This is complete core integration.

HEY
Dad??
Hey Dad? Can You Help Me Get Ready For College? By Bob Chrissman
Advice from dumb old Dad
You may recall reading my article in the May issue of Haymarket Lifestyle Magazine in which my son asked me, Hey Dad? Can you help me plan for my college years? As a bit of background, the summer before my son started his freshman year at Battlefield High School, he and I talked at great length about his upcoming high schools years. We focused a good deal on his need to take advantage of all the opportunities that would come his way. In our many talks that summer, we mapped a
plan of action that outlined what he needed and what he wanted to accomplish by the time he graduated. Now, fast forward to May 2015, when he learned of his acceptance into his first choice of a university. He asked me if I would help him map his college years like we did for his Battlefield years. At the time, I told him that he needed to remain focused on his last month at Battlefield, and then we would talk college.
My son is leaving for college in two weeks. One evening while we were walking our Chow Chow, my son asked, “Can you help me get ready for college?” I had been waiting for him to ask for my help, so the Dumb Old Dad side of me immediately kicked into high gear. Problem is, I failed to pay close attention to what he really asked of me. I thought he asked me the same question that he asked me back in May, but if you look at both questions, you will read the subtle difference; the words “help me plan” verses “help me get ready” for college. Hmm…in my excitement to part yet another lesson on my son, I completely glossed over what he really wanted from me. My son, daughter, and wife, of course, suffered for my mistake. Reason being, for the next thirty minutes, I enthusiastically applied a basic Business 101 lesson to my son’s question. First, I explained that he needed to define the mission of a college student, and apply that definition to what he needed and wanted to achieve by the end of his college years. In other words, the mission he created would be his guiding foundation for his four years in college. Then, I suggested that he should create a set of goals that he would use to achieve his mission. I noted that a goal is a brief statement that offers strategic direction. Next, I
explained that he should identify four or five objectives for each of his goals, telling him that objectives provide tactical direction. In other words, objectives are measurable actions he can do, like engaging in 45 hours of community service every semester. I concluded my lesson by saying that establishing a mission statement and setting goals and objectives is a tried and true way to organize one’s life. Finally, I sat back in my chair at the kitchen table feeling every bit like a good dad. I had parted wisdom and knowledge on my children. Taking a long breath, and a sip of my Diet Coke, I waited for my son’s response. “Ah, that’s all great stuff, Dad,” said my son, “but I was really hoping you would help me with picking out my clothes for college. Like, how many T-shirts and pairs of jeans should I pack?” Did I just hear the screeching of a needle running across an LP?? Sheepishly, I replied, “Uh, ask your mother.” “Hey, speaking of me,” said my wife from the family room, “let me piggyback off of your great lesson, Bob. Your mission in this life is to be a useful husband. One of your goals is to do a lot of chores around the house. Your objective is to clean the garage and spray ant killer along the base of the house.” Hmmm…clearly, it was time to take the Chow Chow for a walk. Sometimes being Dumb Old Dad backfires.

Is Your Child A
STRUGGLING READER? Decoding Dyslexia Virginia By Debbie Eisele As the Regional Leader for the Gainesville/Haymarket Decoding Dyslexia Virginia (DDVA) group, Lynda Bruni has experience with dyslexia - two of her three children have been formally diagnosed. When asked how she became leader of this group she said, “I was reading information on the Learning Ally website and saw a post. It made me wish this group was available to me 20 years ago. I felt compelled to get involved and help support parents to shorten the learning curve of all the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’. From personal experience, I know it is nice to feel like

you are not alone. If I had a group like this when I was navigating the reading challenges with my own children, I wouldn’t have felt intimidated. I would have felt more in control. That is why I do this, to help all those parents know that they are not alone and that there are resources available to them. Our group can point them in the right direction or provide them with the information they so desperately need.” Attendees to the once per month meetings in Haymarket are primarily parents on the dyslexia journey. Some members are “new” while others are “experienced.” They each help other travelling this path. Various industry specialists, certified academic therapists (C.A.T.), child counselors, family counselors and others attend to offer assistance to the parents as well. Guest speakers periodically join the meetings to provide additional support and information. “The primary focus of the monthly DDVA meetings is to provide support for parents struggling with the diagnosis of dyslexia and to help them navigate the special education process which is a difficult one,” Bruni discussed. “Educators and administrators within schools may at times inadvertently pose a barrier to obtaining necessary evaluations and assistance for our kids. Research has indicated many teachers are not educated on dyslexia, and it is NOT their fault. Most teachers are amazing! School funding is not in
place to train educators on dyslexia. If teachers want the training they have to do it themselves - with their own money. Even colleges and universities in the Commonwealth do not teach anything on dyslexia to their professors/ instructors. Educating our teachers is important because each person has a unique learning profile - strengths and weaknesses. It is important to utilize the strengths and assist with weaknesses. No two people show the same symptoms or can be helped in the exact same way, it is a very specialized approach.” “We offer the community the benefit of our collective experiences. We hope to raise awareness on dyslexia within the community - parents and educators together.” Bruni explained. “Ultimately we would love to have a DDVA group in every school district and let parents understand that knowledge about this disability is power.” Although dyslexia is gaining a higher level of awareness throughout the area, there is still a lack of pertinent knowledge on how to identify and help children. “Unfortunately, many educators and parents do not know that dyslexia is not just letter reversal or inability to sound out words, it truly is so much more and students will not always show the same symptoms,” explained the regional leader. The International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) definition states, “Dyslexia is a specific learning Haymarket Lifestyle

disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” (www.eida.org) Bruni said, “Sometimes, it is difficult for parents to assist their children due to lack of financial resources or a myriad of other reasons. Reading, comprehension and study skills will be a battle for dyslexic students and it will not go away if it is ignored, it will only get worse. It is so important to identify, remediate and accommodate in order to assist children to be successful not only in academics, but throughout their life and careers.” There are many layers to dyslexia, so it is important to know how and

What Can Parents Do If Concerned About A Child’s Reading Skills? • Request a comprehensive evaluation from the school in writing (even if your child is an A/B student they are still eligible). • Know the special education process and what rights you and your child are entitled to under the law. • Obtain assistance from DDVA and other organizations that support families through this process. where help is available to both children and adults. “According to research, a multi-sensory language program 4-5 days per week for 1 hour minimum has been the most successful remediation approach for dyslexics. The program must be an explicit program proven to work on dyslexic students, not just a disabled reader. People with this neurological condition learn in a very specific way and it is imperative they receive a multi-sensory program,” said Bruni. Bruni explained the IDA website offers many resources for individuals and educators. She said, “If you suspect a child has dyslexia, parents or educators should request a comprehensive evaluation in writing (even if your student is an A/B student); know the special education process and what rights you and your child are entitled to under the law; and obtain support from DDVA and others that understand the evaluation and special education process (www. peatc.org is a valuable source for parents of students with any learning disability). The Prince William County’s & Fauquier County Public School’s websites both contain detailed information on students’ rights and special education services.” (www.pwcs. edu/ and www.fcps1.org) Bruni cautioned, “Be aware schools cannot diagnose a condition - they can only determine if children are eligible for the special education services. Conversely, a child with a diagnosis is not guaranteed eligibility for services.
Knowing the procedural safeguards in your school district and state will help you through the process.” Additional resources are available to students with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) through AIM-VA. This is a program that provides technology. Because of grants, AIM-VA offers this technology for free to schools and students and also provides training to educators within the school system. It is up to the Special Education teams within each school to contact their program coordinator to learn more about what type of technology is available to help children. Bruni said, “DDVA also wants people involved who are willing to assist on the legislative front - to provide updates to parents and to assist in promoting legislation both locally and nationally. Until we get laws changed there will still be an uphill battle in school systems throughout the state, because there are no laws on the books like there are for other learning disabilities.” When asked why it is important to reach lawmakers in Richmond, Bruni stated, “So there is legislation put into place to assist students with identifying, remediating and accommodating. If students are identified and remediated early (Kindergarten through 3rd grade), children will be better equipped to finish school. Many (students) can be taken out of the special education system because tools will have be given to allow students to master skills - not just pass - and be a part of a general education classroom. Dyslexics have average to above average intellect, but learn best with specific programs. If laws are put in place educators will be Haymarket Lifestyle

Fall Fashion Forecast: Navigating Through the Fur and Fringe by
Gretchen Scheele
When you see the headlines “Fall Fashion Trends”, it may elicit one of several responses: “Yeah! I can’t wait for the cooler months to come.” “No! I don’t want summer to end!” “Let me see what’s new and different this year!” spoken with excitement… or dread. Whether you love or loathe the onset of fall, she’s coming, all bedazzled in fur and leather trim, lace, and fringe. As the fall 2015 fashion trend magazine covers are hitting the checkout aisles at the local grocery stores, the latest trends may send you singing, or screaming. Your reaction will most likely hinge on your age, your budget, and the current shape of your physique. I doubt very many soccer moms were screeching with delight when the summer trends featured crop tops. Being in style, in trend, in the now, is possible – for any age, with any body type, within any budget. No matter your age, curve appeal, or discretionary funds, if you are reading this article, you are interested in being stylish. Let’s be honest, ladies, very few of us want to look outdated or older than we truly are according to the calendar. Nothing ages a woman like out of trend clothing. Here is what is on the horizon as fall comes trickling our way, mostly inspired by the ‘70’s: • The dusty side of autumnal colors. Moss green, steely bluish greys, muted light peach and teals, Marsala (raisin), and the lavender end of purple. • Greys. This is not a new trend; we see it every fall, but think head to toe grey, as in monochromatic. • Patchwork. True 70’s vibe. • Plaids. As always with fall, plaid makes its return, mostly in the form of a red tartan print. • Nouveau Victorian. High collars, ruffles, lace, brooches, but in modern colors, with edgy details (like leather, fur, glitz). • Flared cut pants and jeans. Yes, the trend is away from the skinny legged pants. • High waisted bottoms. Waistbands are heading north, reaching over the belly button to create a longer look. • Pant suits. Purchased as a set, not as separates, with an added touch, like mixed materials, added trims, or buckle details. • Car wash pleats. This translates into a skirt’s fabric being cut into long, fringe like bottoms like the synthetic strips that clean your car at the local car wash. • The flounced skirt hem. Goodbye pencil skirts, hello flowy movement! • Slip dresses. Slinky, shiny, seductive. • Fringe. On jackets, blouses, coats, and purses. • Bling is back! Big bling, not oversized jewelry with minimal design, but feminine, bedazzled jewelry, in the form of brooches and crop dusting earrings. • Stacked kitten heels. Gone are the stilettos. A wider, shorter, heel-base is in vogue. • Boots. Maybe designers are reacting to last year’s harsh winter 20

with the emergence of snow stomping worthy boots. Think combat. Another trend is tall boots, way far north of the knee cap. Furry feet. Think the opposite of combat boot – think of the upcoming Star War’s movie and our favorite Wookie. Furry arms. Coats and sweaters are trimmed with fur, either on the collar, lapels, arms, and even just the cuffs. One sleeve. Asymmetrical sleeves, with one side being long, and the opposite side coming no farther than the shoulder. Statement white blouse. Not the standard button up, but something with an added bit of interest -- ruffles, ties, or artistic lapels. The neck marks the spot. Skinny scarves, tied around your neck for a feminine touch, maybe even in a bow, up by the neck or loose and long. Turtleneck dickies/chokers paired with a lower neckline blouse or dress. This is a modern twist on the Victorian choker, minus the cameo. Patterned tights. Textural patterns, like fish net, chevron, and mock brocade (not colored pattern). Ribbed knits. Not so much a cable knit, but thinner, finer ribbing. Ponchos. Add fringe to the bottom, and you score more fashion points. Duster coats. Translation – below your shin, almost to the ankle. If it has big buttons, you just added an additional trend. Denim on denim. Denim jeans with a denim jacket or denim shirt; weight and color saturation should be different, not matching.

While some of these trends are really more like the laws of fall fashion (plaid, grey, leather/fur), the best way to look relevant but not overshooting it to the point of embarrassing your daughters or needing to refinance your home, is to remember with age, comes moderation. The longer you’ve held a driver’s license, the more discreetly the trends should be incorporated into the garment. Instead of purchasing a purse that has fringe that nearly hits the ground, a longer standing driver could opt for a sweater or poncho trimmed with a few inches of fringe on the bottom of the hem or sleeves. Instead of a patchwork coat, purchase an accessory, like a clutch or handbag. Big, blingy earrings might be worn with a classic black turtleneck or a simple, monochromatic (possibly grey) twin set. Slight updates to the classic pieces show that as we progress with the years, we are still living in modern times. This is also true of size; no matter the size of our curves, classic pieces like black pants or boot cut jeans paired with a current fashion, such as a fringed poncho or statement white blouse, accentuates our style, not our size. The most budget friendly option for your fall purchases is to check out
ladies consignment stores. They are often stocked with higher end labels, in classic pieces such as dress pants, cashmere sweaters, and jeans that would run you three figures at the local mall. Not only do they carry clothing, but also accessories. For the fall 2015 trends, consignment stores will have variations of white blouses, brooches you could add to a simple sweater or coat, boots and kitten heels, leather pieces, plaid or grey garments, and custom fur options like stoles, coats, and hats. Typically, consignment stores price their items for one-third to one half of the original retail price and carry only the better, higher quality labels in “like new” condition. It’s not uncommon to find Burberry, Chanel, Gucci, St. John, Tahari as well as mid range labels such Banana Republic, J Crew, Ann Taylor, and lines featured at Nordstrom and Anthropology. Check out your local consignment stores and eBay for a sane way to add style or stock up on staples. Whatever trends you decide to add to your fall fashion wardrobe, remember that fashion is supposed to be a fun reflection of your individualism, not send you to the local consumer credit counseling center!

SIMON KENTON, LARGER THAN LIFE Legendary frontiersman was born in the Bull Run Mountains by John T. Toler For years, a Virginia Historical Marker has stood along U.S. 15 north of Haymarket that acknowledges Simon Kenton’s birthplace, five miles to the west. In the minimal space allowed, the highway marker describes Simon Kenton (1755-1836) as a frontiersman and associate of Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark. But there is much more to the story; his life is a chronicle of the Revolutionary War, the struggles faced by the young nation in its early years, and the

brutal conflicts in the disputed Northwest Territory. Simon was born in a small cabin in the Bull Run Mountains at the headwaters of Mill Run on April 3, 1755. He was the seventh child of Mark Kenton Sr., an Irish immigrant, and his wife Mary Miller Kenton, who was of Scotch-Irish stock. The Kentons farmed the patch of land in a little valley between Highacre Hill and Roundtop Mountain known as “Devil’s Bed.” The property was owned by Richard Graham, a merchant whose family had acquired large tracts of land in Western Prince William, some of which became part of Fauquier County when it was broken off from Prince William in 1759. Growing up in poverty and relative isolation, Simon took little advantage of the meager opportunities to get an education in his early years, preferring to hunt and explore the forests around his home. He didn’t like farming or helping around the house, and would rather be playing games – or more often fighting with other boys in the neighborhood. Simon’s propensity for getting into fights would result in an incident that would change the course of his life. At age 16, he was smitten by a local girl named Ellen Cummins. However, Ellen wasn’t interested in young Simon, and was later betrothed to William Leachman, who was older and better educated. At the reception following the wedding of William and
Ellen, Simon created a scene by seating himself at the table between William and Ellen. Sensing trouble, William’s brother lured Simon outside with the promise of a drink, and proceeded to give him a severe beating. Simon recovered from his injuries, but never got over the incident. On April 5, 1771, his father sent him over to the

Simon was spared this gruesome fate when Simon Girty – a Tory turncoat who functioned as the liaison between the British and their Indian allies – came upon the scene. Girty, who claimed he had known Simon years before, convinced the Indian chief to allow him to take Simon to the British headquarters at Detroit, where he would be more valuable as a prisonerof-war. The arrangements were made and Girty and an Indian escort set out for Detroit with Simon and two other captives. Stopping for the night by an Indian trader’s house, Girty and the Indians engaged in a drunken spree. The trader’s wife, wishing to help the prisoners,
who opposed British rule. Hamilton had seized the fort a few months earlier, when the French and their Indian cohort fled under attack, leaving two Americans, one of whom was Capt. Leonard Helm, to face the British. They were taken as prisoners of war. On Feb. 23, 1779, Gen. Clark and about 100 men, including Simon, surrounded Fort Sackville. Although outnumbered 4-to-1, they deceived Hamilton into believing that the American force numbered 1,000 men – and just the mention of Clark’s name struck fear into the Indians under Hamilton’s command. After taking a few casualties shot inside the fort by American marksmen,

After dark, she took three rifles stacked by the house by the Indians, and freed the captives. After blessing and thanking her, the three men hastened away. It would take a month to get back to the American lines. Simon recovered from the ordeal, and was back in the service of the Continental Army, serving as a scout for Gen. George Rogers Clark during the February 1779 expedition to recapture Fort Sackville at Vincennes, Indiana, on the Wabash River. Col. Henry Hamilton, the lieutenant governor of Detroit, commanded Fort Sackville. In September, Simon and his party headed west, but on Sept. 16, 1783, his father died, and was buried at present-day Point Pleasant, W. Va. They first stopped in Limestone (later renamed Maysville) Ky., but soon pushed further west, where they established Kenton’s Station, near present-day Washington, Ky. Gen. George Rogers Clark, aided in his mission to recapture Fort Sackville by Simon Kenton (Butler), accepts surrender from British Col. Henry Hamilton.
Hamilton surrendered to Gen. Clark on Feb. 25, 1779. Among the Americans present at the surrender were Simon and Capt. Helm. Redemption During the summer of 1779, Simon learned that his father back in Virginia was still alive, as was his old adversary William Leachman, whom he thought he had killed some 28 years before. Now widowed, Leachman bore no ill will toward Simon. Taking back his old surname, Simon Kenton married Martha Dowden about 1782, and continued his service with the Continental Army until the peace treaty was signed with Britain in early 1783. Wishing to re-establish his family ties, Simon returned home later that summer – arriving just as unexpectedly as when he left. He asked his father, then 83 years old, and his older brother Mark, who had served with Gen. Henry “Light

The expedition, led by Gen. “Mad Anthony” Wayne was in response to increased Indian activity in the area, following the disastrous defeat of Gen. Americans as part of the Treaty of Paris. Also at issue was the presence of British troops to the north, who were allied with the Indians. On Aug. 20, 1794, Gen. Anthony launched an attack on the confederacy, resulting in the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Maumee, Ohio, south of Toledo. It was a decisive victory for the Legion, and the last major battle fought in the Northwest Indian War. Simon married Martha’s cousin, Elizabeth Jarboe about 1797, and in 1802, moved from Kentucky with his family to what became present-day Zanesville, Ohio. The couple eventually had six children. In recognition of his past service, he was commissioned a general in the Ohio Militia. Ten years later, his militia unit was called-up to fight during the War of 1812. One of five brigades under the Map of the United States in the late 1790s shows some of the original states and the command of Gen. Isaac Shelby (17501826), the Ohio Militia participated in the vast, disputed region known as the Northwest Territory. Battle of the Thames, which was fought on Oct. 5, 1813, near present-day Chatham, Ontario, Canada. British troops under Gen. Henry Proctor had been driven north out of Detroit, along with their Shawnee Indian allies under Chief Tecumseh. Outnumbered by the American forces and running out of food and ammunition, Proctor’s troops and Tecumseh’s braves were quickly defeated. Tecumseh was killed in the battle, and the poorly managed British retreat was a complete rout. The action re-affirmed American control of the Northwest Territory, and marked the end of the Indian alliances and British involvement south of Canada. After his last tour of military service, Simon returned to Ohio, where he became a large landowner. But while he was a skilled warrior, he was not well versed in the real estate and property laws of the time, and over the next ten years, he lost most of his property, and his fortune, to swindlers. Left with only a small cabin on a piece of undesirable land, Simon appeared before the Kentucky legislature at Frankfort, asking that a claim on property he still had in that state be released. Looking bedraggled and dressed in tattered clothes, he was not immediately recognized. But when his identity became known, he was treated with respect and the claim dropped. As was the case with other veterans, it would take years, but the U.S. Congress finally gave Simon a pension for his years of service. He died on April 29, 1836, in his cabin near Zanesville, and was buried in the small cemetery on the property. In November 1865, his remains were re-interred in the Oakdale Cemetery in Urbanna, Ohio.

Wanderlust PLANTS SHOWING UP IN UNEXPECTED PLACES by Lynne Galluzo
I retired. The physical demands of he job, the loss of my crew to other the pursuits and my husband’s retirement all combined to help me make this decision. I am very proud of the business I built and the quality of work we did. I met amazing people, some as customers and others who helped me in various ways. The newly found free time has allowed me to work on my own garden and it really needed it. It had become more of a curse than a pleasure because the neglect made me sad but given even a week of attention it is starting to be something wonderful again. I am reconnecting with my plants and I am enjoying finding where the “Wanderers” have gone to. To me the Wanderers are the plants that toss their seeds around the garden and show up in unexpected places. Wanderers are easy to remove from where I don’t want them. Thugs are their nasty counterpoints. Thugs are pushy, invasive and very hard to get rid of. I like talking about Wanderers more. One of my favorites is Rose Campion. The main plant is a small rosette of pale green, fuzzy leaves. In late spring it sends up one or two slender stalks that get small, deep rose colored flowers at the ends. Anything they wave around in front of looks better because of it, especially my Roses. The seeds don’t 34
go far, they seem to stay on one side of the garden, the plants take up little space and pull out easily when they get too prolific. I love Gaura. If I could sign my name with a plant at every place I worked at it would be with a Gaura. The main plant is nothing much but when it is blooming it has long, wiry stems with delicate little flowers at the end and looks very much like a swarm of tiny butterflies. Gaura comes in two colors – pink and white. Looking at my garden it seems that the white is the hardiest of the two. This year I have lots of white Gaura “butterflies” all over my garden. They seed and spread; surprise and please me. Brazilian Verbena is another plant that, like Rose Campion, has a small base of leaves and long flower stems, this time with bunches of small purple flowers at the ends. Rose Campion, Gaura and Brazilian Verbena are all called “See Through Plants” because they don’t block the plants behind them. Brazilian Verbena is the most widespread and prolific of the Wanderers in my garden. Fortunately it is easy to pull out of anywhere I don’t want it. Another plus of all of these plants is that deer leave them alone.
Gaura Several years ago I planted a true Perennial Chrysanthemum or Dendranthema which is different from the fall Mums that we will buy fresh out of the greenhouses in perfect hemispheres of packed flowers in a few weeks. This Chrysanthemum looks more like a Daisy but comes in a variety of colors like pink, peach, orange, yellow and white. The flower I planted was pink but the next spring it was surrounded by baby volunteers and every one of the ones I transplanted bloomed a different color from the original. Now when a new shoot shows up somewhere I look at it and wonder what color it will surprise me with. Again, they are easy to remove from places like between my path stones or on top of an Iris. These four are the real Haymarket Lifestyle
Rose Campion
Wanderers in my garden. You might have others. Then there are the flowering plants that slowly spread to larger clumps but stay manageable like Salvia and Echinacea. Bordering on annoying but still “Keepers” are the plants that spread vigorously and need more work to keep in check like Iris, Lambs Ear, Plumbago, Yarrow, Caryopteris and yes, even Daffodils. Their assets outweigh the negatives so I keep them, enjoy them, dig and divide them. The real Thugs in my garden, beside outright weeds, are the wild Violets and a pink, bell shaped flower called Campanula Punctata or Spotted Bellflower. I bought one when it was in bloom because it was pretty. I have tried everything short of Brush Killer to get rid of it. It was crawling all over a patch of Iris so I dug them up and cleaned out every root I could find. Unfortunately it seems I left a fraction of an inch of root somewhere in the September 2015
dirt because it is all back again. And spreading. Almost as hardy are the wild Violets. One of their favorite places to call home is at the base of my Roses where getting rid of them is almost impossible - as well as dangerous. I once left them alone because I thought they were a pretty groundcover. I changed my mind on that a few years ago but the Violets haven’t gotten the message. I planted one Gooseneck Loosestrife in my garden in Centreville. It took me three years to get all of the masses of volunteers out. I wish the garden stores wouldn’t sell them, or at least make sure the labeling has strong warnings about how vigorously these three spread.
IF YOU GIVE A WANDERER A HOME I PROMISE IT WILL REWARD YOU. It is September – have you cut back your shaggy hanging baskets? A good haircut and some food will keep them looking good for the rest of the season. Thanks to Terry Aufmuth for her great garden tips in the August issue. I have seen the great work Cornerstone Landscaping does. She has good ideas, does good work and is fairly priced. Retirement does not mean I will stop gardening or writing for Haymarket Lifestyle Magazine. I love doing them both and I look forward to having more time to do them both better.
Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz. 35

Avoiding Costly Housing Mistakes in the Midst of a Divorce
HGBA Member Spotlight
By Susan Jacobs
Divorce is a tough situation which opens up many emotional and financial issues to be solved. One of the most important decisions is what to do about the house. You have 4 basic housing options when in the midst of a divorce: 1 Sell the House Now and Divide Up the Proceeds –As you work to get your financial affairs in order, make sure you understand what your net proceeds after a sale will be (i.e. after all selling expenses and needed repairs). Then you can determine what your split of the proceeds will be. The split may not be 50/50, but rather may depend on the divorce settlement, the source of the original down payment and property laws in your area. 2 Buy Out Your Spouse – This may require you meeting with a lender to determine how much you can afford based on your income and current debt. You will want to take into consideration the selling expense to arrive at a buyout amount. 3 Have Your Spouse Buy You Out – If you are the one who is leaving, you have the opportunity to start again in new surroundings with cash in your pocket. However, be aware that if the old home loan is not refinanced you 48
will be liable for the mortgage. Just because your spouse did a quit claim deed does not release your financial obligation. This liability may make qualifying for a new mortgage difficult for you if you decide to purchase a home. 4 Retain Joint Ownership – If there is not enough equity you might consider retaining joint ownership for a period of time. While this temporary situation means you have no immediate worries in selling you will want to keep your eye on tax considerations which may change from the time of your divorce to the time of the sale. If you and your spouse decide to sell your home, it’s important to work together through a professional to maximize your return. You will need to put differences aside. You both will need to sign a listing agreement, the contract and the all the closing documents. In 2006, when I had the opportunity to start my own business, I decided I could best serve my customers by having a variety of marketing products to provide rather than a single product line. There’s been a lot of learning along the way but being able to work with customers on their marketing campaigns to get the best results for them instead of trying to sell them on a product is much more rewarding. And, I don’t miss those corporate office meetings one bit. How does your business serve the Haymarket/Gainesville community? Our business community is made up primarily of small businesses. Haymarket Lifestyle
I’m proud to say that we are very active in supporting the small business community in other ways. We facilitate the Small Business Roundtable twice a month with the Prince William Chamber and I am on the board of the HGBA. We work with clients to help them craft a marketing message and implement a campaign that deliver leads and prospects. Business owners wear many hats and can’t be experts at everything. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your business. It’s hard to pick just one. Like any business owner I remember my first order. It was for $19 in business cards! I had just opened the business and stopped at a local hardware store to ask about something I needed but the owner wasn’t in so I asked for their phone number. The lady behind the counter said they were out of business cards. I said, “Well, I could print you some!” and the rest is history. Another great moment was last year - we were chosen 2015 Micro Business of the Year by the Prince William Chamber. That was very special because it was voted on by other business professionals in the area. Have you had an experience with your business that you wish you could redo differently? If I could do it again I’d start faster and take more risks. If you own a business you need to think big and set goals. I would also have learned more about Internet marketing sooner. What are the top 3 business tips & tricks can you offer other business owners & professionals? 1. Focus - too many small businesses think that by limiting what they offer they are turning away potential clients. I know it’s counter-intuitive but the more a business can focus on what it does well the better it will do. 2. The digital age is here to stay - The big companies know more about your customers than you do and are marketing to them in very sophisticated ways. They are locking them in to the digital revolution and building databases so they can create new products specifically tailored to their buying habits. Review everything you do to make sure you are reaching your prospects on the web and on their phones. Capture all your interactions with them so you can learn and market to them as individuals. 3. Relationships are everything in business. Pay attention to your existing customers. They are more important to your business than new customers. Sell more to the people you already have a relationship with. Don’t be afraid to ask your customers what you are doing well and what you could do better. Be flexible and empower your employees to take care of customers. September 2015

Trinity Boyd Melts Crayons & Hearts How A Six Year Old Follows Her Passion In Life by Emma Korynta
Surrounded by unique canvases adorned with melted colors from the moment you walk in, you wouldn’t think you were in the average second grader’s idea of a fun day, but Trinity Boyd is not the average six year old. Boyd may be young, but she knows what she’s doing. Since she started at age two, Boyd has known that art is her passion. “I first wrote my name and I was doing painting and making people,” Boyd said. “I just loved art so much and it makes me happy. That’s all that matters to me and my mom.” Boyd has experimented with many different mediums of art, but
her specialty is crayon art. “She came home [from school] with the idea and I’d never heard of crayon melting,” said Brandi Norrell, Boyd’s mother. “I didn’t know that you could do it with a hair dryer or a heat gun or exactly what was needed, so we had to do a little bit of homework.” Crayon art is produced by gluing crayons onto a canvas in a particular order and then melting them with a heat-gun or blow dryer so that the colors drip down. On average, one piece takes a box of 24-count crayons, but that’s only if the piece is a simple rainbow.
Boyd particularly enjoys make her art different by choosing to only include particular colors or having a base on the canvas such as a word or a photo. Her favorite painting she’s made is decorated with silhouettes of dancers and a melting rainbow showering above them. “Ever since she was little, she’s always enjoyed art,” Norrell said. “In the preschool level it was finger-

painting, kid stuff. As she’s gotten older in kindergarten and first grade it’s gotten more specific like with the crayons. This last school year she decided she to enter an art exhibit. Then her crayon melting started, and it hasn’t stopped.” While Boyd has been making her art for years, this was her first art show of her own, which was held on July 18th in Haymarket. “She wanted to have an art show and didn’t know if it was possible, but after doing her art show in Wakefield she was wondering if she could have one,” Norrell said. “She has a summer birthday so it’s very rare that people can come to her actual birthday party. This was a way for her to celebrate.” Plenty went into making the art show become a reality, and Boyd was involved in the entire process. After the venue was booked, the canvases and crayons were bought, and the
layout was designed, Boyd had to make sure her vision was met. “I just take a couple breaths and I just talk and tell people how to do things,” Boyd said. “It’s just really fun to me.” In addition to helping set up, Boyd made individual crayon art paintings on small canvases as a gift for all guests and set prices for the individual pieces she had up for sale. Boyd was very focused on making this art show come to life, but she won’t stop here. She certainly is focused on crayon art, but Boyd and her mother see her expanding into different genres. “She does a little bit of everything, and the school where she goes offers a big exposure to the arts,” Norrell said. In addition to all of her crayon art, Boyd has experimented with clay sculptures and other mediums. While she hasn’t worked with any other
mode to the extent of her experience with crayon art, she is interested in branching out. “I think I’m going to start off with other things,” Boyd said. “Maybe splashing paint, or drawing, or painting, or something like that. Art is really all I do now.” Both Boyd and Norrell are proceeding with open, excited minds as Boyd continues to follow her passion. “As a parent, I just want to support her any way I can, to help her explore this idea and see if this is something she really wants to do,” Norrell said. “I’m just giving her a positive platform, a canvas.” Boyd showed how happy she is to have the ability to do what she enjoys while making the people around her happy. “My mom was so proud of me and I was so happy to be doing this,” Boyd said. “I guess this is my life thing now.”

COFFEE & WINE BAR
A European Adventure Offering Austrian Cuisine, Atmosphere & Beverages By Emma Korynta 56
Haymarket Lifestyle
Immediately when you enter, you’re greeted by the aromas of Viennese coffee and fresh-baked pastries. Surrounded by rustic yet modern décor and smiling faces, you truly feel you’ve been transported to Austria. “We see a lot of Europeans come in here and say ‘Wow, it feels like home,’” said owner Stefan Trummer. “They feel a connection. That’s what we want to see.” Trummer’s Coffee and Wine Bar was styled after coffee shops in Trummer’s homeland of Vienna, both in aesthetics and food. “In Vienna, you get fresh pastries, you get small sandwiches, good coffee drinks, coffee cocktails, like here. We offer the bar and our unique and selective wine list,” Trummer said. Trummer’s Coffee and Wine Bar is owned in part by Stefan Trummer and his wife, as well as his mother-inlaw, Lisa Royster. The couple originally opened the restaurant Trummer’s On Main in Clifton and decided to reach out to Royster to open this new restaurant. “My favorite thing is that our business is different,” Royster said. “It’s something new. It’s introducing people to a unique bar setting, style of dining, and a new style of coffee shop.” Every inch of the café is reminiscent of the type of dining experience one would receive in a Vienna coffee shop. The floor-to-ceiling windows and frosted glass bottles of water delivered to each table give the space an air of elegance
September 2015
that has disappeared from many businesses. “A European coffee shop is very fancy,” Royster said. “They have chandeliers hanging, all the waiters are in ties and long sleeve shirts, but we didn’t want to go to that extreme. We wanted to give it that feel, but keep it more modern. We brought old and new: a little industrial on top or our warm colors.” This update on elegance is most noticeable at the bar, where a rustic bronze backsplash pairs with the contrasting white counters with wooden and black stools. Splashes of red liven up the warm wood undertones and compliment the metallic accents. The European style is definitely apparent in their delectable food options. Whether you choose the Madrid Panini, the custom Greek Yogurt Bar, or the Arugula Salad, you can’t go wrong. “The way we put meals together, it’s not the norm,” said Trummer’s chef Aminata Sillah. “At least, that’s the direction I want to head in. I want to come up with things people aren’t used to but taste great.” Each sandwich on the menu offers a unique combination of fresh flavors from apple with manchego cheese and fig jam, to Italian speck with gruyere cheese and mustard. The arugula salad offers a combination of goat cheese, prosciutto and grapes lend a refreshing taste that prevents you from stopping until you’ve had every last bite. The real treat, though, are the pastries and coffee drinks. The stars of the show at Trummer’s really are the beignets. These donutlike pastries transcend anything you could even fathom tasting when you break open the fresh-baked fritters and dip them into the ingeniously chosen
butterscotch dip. The only thing that makes these treats a better cap to a great meal is when they’re paired with their signature drink: the Viennese Eiscafe, a drink that would be comparable to the best possible coffee milkshake you could think of. “We’re really proud of what we’ve done here,” Royster said. The trio believe the unique style of the café helps attract customers, especially coupled with their location in the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center. “We offer a bar atmosphere to some degree, but not the same as a other bars,” Royster said. “We offer a restaurant, but we don’t have steaks and fish to order. We offer small plates; we offer pastries all made here in house. It’s a 100 percent family owned business.” Trummer believes that the surrounding restaurants and businesses actually help the café. “I don’t see it as much of a competition because we’re something unique,” Trummer said. “It’s not like two ice cream shops next to each other. We are very different businesses, very unique places.” Trummer’s definitely appeals to patrons. “A lot of people really like the place,” Sillah said. “They like the food, the coffee (LavAzza brand of coffee) and ‘feel’ of the restaurant - the atmosphere.” 57
While the Austrian atmosphere feels most familiar to their European customers, Trummer’s as a whole hopes to make everyone feel like they’re in a place of welcome. “Our philosophy is to deliver excellent products and to make people happy and welcome like this is their home,” Royster said. “Since we are family owned, we want to make guests feel like they’re a part of the family.” Even the décor includes family photos of the Trummer family in Vienna. Trummer has plans to expand that ever-welcoming family. They’re researching locations where the next branch could be. While Trummer knows that a lot goes into bringing a restaurant to life, he knows the rewards outweigh the costs. “It’s always risky and a little frightening when you do something risky and out of left field that nobody’s ever seen before,” Trummer said. “You don’t know if it’ll work out or not, but when guests come through the door and you see the happy faces, it’s the most rewarding thing.” Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar 14013 Promenade Commons | Gainesville, VA 20155 703-754-0135 M-Th 8am-9pm // F-Sa 8am-10pm // Su 8am-9pm

GREENHILL WINERY & VINEYARDS Offering a New Taste At The Old Swedenburg Estate by Steve Oviatt Swedenburg Estate in Middleburg, started in 1987 by Juanita Swedenburg and her husband, gained fame as both the fictional home of author Ellen Crosby’s mysteries and for leading the fight to allow wine to be shipped across state lines. Hard times followed Swedenburg’s death in 2007. Before satellite entrepreneur David Greenhill purchased the struggling winery and vineyards in 2013, he conducted a series of meetings with then Doukenie winemaker Sebastian Marquet, who was looking for new opportunities. Once Greenhill purchased the property, Marquet took over by replacing older, diseased vines with new stock and varietals and giving the wines a new taste. Turning the old Swedenburg home into an adults-only club retreat and remodeling the tasting room has transformed the new Greenhill Winery and Vineyards into a true destination along the Route 50 corridor in Middleburg. The wines reflect Marquet’s Burgundy heritage, beginning with the delightful, bubbly Blanc de Blancs. The dry, fruity Seyval Blanc and bone dry Riesling pair well with sushi, sashimi, poultry and seafood. The highly rated 60

Chardonnay, with its light buttery and vanilla notes, is a refreshing treat with cheeses and chicken. Red wines of note are the surprisingly light Superstition, which pairs well with game and lamb, the light Philosophy Bordeaux blend that goes with red meat and the dark, smoky Ontology, a big Chambourcin that should be paired with dark chocolates.
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic to eat outside or purchase one of the picnic packages, which come complete with a bottle of wine and a blanket. Kids are welcome in the tasting room but dogs should be kept outside. Those interested can sign up for twice daily tours of the estate, complete with a tasting of the winery’s current offerings.
Steve Oviatt is former President of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association and runs his own consulting business in addition to working for a number of local wineries. Steve Acknowledges that his daughter has taught him everything he knows about wine. He lives in Catharpin with his wife, Nancy.
