It began over 11 years ago and what a time it was. Our twins had just turned a year old. We had recently finished our new facility for Piedmont Press and had moved in earlier in the year. There were only a handful more of college classes to take before I could graduate. There were the requisite non-profit boards to serve. Life was good but very hectic. Much time was devoted to working within our local community. Yet, too many meetings did not yield enough results that benefitted the folks that live here or work here. It was frustrating. At the same time, we were looking for a way to utilize our largest printing press more. A consultant, Sid Chadwick, challenged me to find a way to bridge some life passion with my love for printing. One day, the idea of a community magazine popped in my head. I talked about it incessantly, mostly to Holly, about how it would be about positive aspects of living here and that it would be written by the citizens and for the citizens. It would be a targeted, saturated distribution so that advertisers would be reaching out to everyone in a tight radius knowing their return on investment would be high. And the magazine would of high quality and free to the public. Input was sought from many in the field. “It’s impossible to make a reasonable return doing that.” “Well good luck with that idea!” “Don’t waste your money.” “You don’t have time to do this.” Etc. But one person believed. Holly. My wife told me to stop talking about starting Warrenton Lifestyle and we’d just make it happen. Her and I. On the sofa at night or over breakfast in the morning. So we did. The road was bumpy and we got many cuts and bruises but, ultimately, after 11 years, two more magazines and several specialty publications, we’ve been able to continuously deliver something we are proud of and your feedback has been what’s fueled us on. On behalf of myself, Holly and our team of writers, artists, ad reps, production crew and support team, we want to thank all of you, the readers and advertisers, for continuing to make The Lifestyle Publications a successful component of our communities. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and serve our local businesses. We are going to continue to expand our services throughout the region. See the launch of our new website at www.piedmontlifestyle.com which will bring you stories from ALL of our publications and a local calendar of events. Your input to our future issues is always welcomed.

Exit 40 Farmers Market unites local farms and families for fresh food and better health By Elizabeth Schierbeek
T
he Exit 40 Farmers Market is back, and they’re fresher than ever. The premier farmers’ market in the Haymarket/Gainesville area is bringing you an amazing lineup of local farmers and artisans. They offer a wide variety of products, including chemical free produce, pasture raised meats, eggs, local honey, preserves, olive oil, artisanal foods, crafts, and more. They also have a new time, location, and community partner, all aimed at helping to connect customers with the best options to keep their families healthy, happy, and hungry for more. Formerly known as the Haymarket Thursday Afternoon Market, The Exit 40 Farmers Market and the Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center are teaming up to make the community as strong and healthy as possible. They’re on a mission to help people develop and sustain healthy lifestyles. Novant Health UVA Health System manager, Jeanne Whitman, said they are proud to partner with the market and help support the local agricultural community. They want “to promote whole foods and farm to table [eating]”. They are trying to put an

emphasis on promoting preventative medicine. Just like the saying, “pay the farmer now, or pay the doctor later,” buying and consuming wholesome, local foods now can help save money and prevent illness in the long run. The market’s manager Teresa Pilegaard discussed the rebranding, “We’re trying to focus on what’s going on seasonally and helping people understand how seasonal farming, buying, and eating work. I want to be able to connect all these places in this vicinity with this customer base - to help make people aware of the agricultural industry that’s in their backyard. I want it to be a community supported market that focuses on the good things people are growing and doing in this area.” Her vision for the market is to make it “a community of relationships between these farmers and customers. So customers are comfortable talking to farmers, developing relationships and friendships with them, and therefore

supporting their endeavors, whether it be politically or financially.” The main thing she wants to share with any new customers is “the switch to eating locally can be scary at first and learning how to cook based on eating locally can be daunting. Taking the first step, coming to the market, even just buying one thing, is all you really need to start. You don’t have to make a major life change in order to be a farmers’ market shopper. Just take the time to come, look, and talk to the vendors.” About the vendors, Pilegaard said, “The first day I was there with all of them this year, I was amazed to see how excited they were to see each other. It’s a group of people who are passionate about what they’re doing and passionate about offering high quality food and products to the people who come through the market and are really willing to give of themselves.” Having shopped at the market and talked with the vendors myself, I can easily see what she means. From Elias Zarkadoulas at Taste of Old Country giving out free samples for customers, telling me all about the family olive groves on the sandy shores of Southern Greece, and how they offer an empty oil bottle recycling program. To Caroline Mello at Waterford Run Farm & Forge telling me about her jams and how her radishes were fresh picked that morning. A trip to the market isn’t just to get groceries. It’s a time to socialize, try new things, and meet some amazing members of the local

community. There are over a dozen confirmed vendors for the rest of this season, a number that will hopefully grow to at least twenty by next year. All but one vendor, who comes from West Virginia, is local to the area. The closest being about five miles away. Vendors include: Your Hotness Salsa, Great Harvest Bread Co., Silver Apple Farm, Countless Blessings Farm, Miriam Artistry and Produce, Purses 4 Pleasure, Threads, Cobbler View Farm, Taste of Old Country, Waterford Run Farm & Forge, Joie de Vivre, C. Hess Orchard and Produce. And it wouldn’t be complete without a food truck each week, Hidden Julles’ The Rambler, and The Farm Effect. Both offer farm to table options and make a wonderful addition to the market lineup. Another thing that makes this market

unique is their new children’s market. There will be several small stalls offered to children to sell foods or crafts. Some of the current vendors’ kids are already lined up to sell sausage and eggs they have raised on the family farm. Pilegaard said it will be a “space for them to learn financial responsibility, but also for them to get into this agricultural based environment from the get go. Supporting those around us by what we do and how we spend our money.” As author and educator Anna Lappé said, “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” Eating local is about eating what is in season, in whatever region you live in. At a farmers’ market, the offerings will vary greatly depending on the time of the year. The wonderful thing about these small farms is that they grow diverse and unusual items, including heirloom varieties. For example, after talking with Roger Gwinn of Silver Apple Farm, I went home with what is called an African horned cucumber, or jelly melon. It’s a small, spiky, green fruit with a slightly acidic cucumber taste. I also tried to buy what looked like a pear, but turned out to be another variety of cucumber. It’s so much fun talking to vendors, seeing the options each week, and trying something new. Another thing for people new to shopping at farmers’ markets to know is that some of the jargon and products can be slightly different. They may be used to seeing the phrase “certified organic” and know this to mean that it was grown

without pesticides and fertilizer. However, that certification can be a very lengthy and expensive process for a small family farm to take on. So, to help them from passing that cost down to consumers, many farmers who follow these same practices do not get certified. Instead, look for signs that say “chemical free.” Some farmers, such as Waterford Run Farm & Forge, are so dedicated to this cause that I’ve heard they will go out and pick beetles off their squash by hand. If you have any questions about products and practices, just ask. If you haven’t noticed the theme here yet, it’s all about getting to know your farmer and your food, and using that knowledge to better yourself and your community. If you want to help the environment even more, bring a reusable bag to carry all your wonderful goodies home from the market. The market is open Thursdays from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and will be held on the campus of Novant Health UVA Haymarket Medical Center at 15225 Heathcote Blvd, Haymarket, Virginia 20169, just off I-66 at exit 40. The market season will run from June through October, potentially November. Copper Cricket adds to the list of established consignment stores in the little town, like The Very Thing for Her and Upscale Seconds, both of which offer clothing and accessories. But the Copper Cricket picks up where The Very Thing, a furniture consignment store, left off when it closed in June of 2015. being so well received in town. Both Myre and Solomon have a strong belief in recycling and the old adage that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. “Consignments are like Christmas every day,” they say. Myre has been enjoying the furniture business for 18 years, with hours spent as a visual display coordinator and accessory buyer for Greenfront Furniture in Sterling and also at 3 consignment shops around the local area. During her years as an army spouse, Solomon realized
her enjoyment of antiquing and bargain hunting, but her time working at The Very Thing was where she learned about the business of home goods and the ins and outs of consignment store operation. The combination of these two different perspectives brings a wonderful partnership and balance to the store, which is both of the women’s first foray into the world of owning a small business. The name of the Copper Cricket consignment shop is something Myre and Solomon invested a lot of thought into.
A cricket on the hearth is said to bring good luck to the home, an idea which may stem from a Charles Dickens novel of the same name. And copper is thought to be a healing and balancing metal so much so that jewelry is often made of it so that wearers can reap the benefits. Combining these two concepts creates a unique and interesting name that so accurately fits this little shop. “Our goal is to have a fun shop where folks can find treasures to bring into their house to make it a home,” say the two. “Trends and tastes change all the time. It allows you to change your decor without paying an arm and a leg and freshen up your look” says a customer when asked the appeal of this type of store. Consignment allows buyers to purchase items at a lower price than buying new and also allows sellers to make a little money back. And while online yard sale sites have risen in popularity these days, as Myre puts it, selling on consignment allows a safer, easier way without having to wait on people to show up. The items in the Copper Cricket are priced aggressively and there is a big turnover of inventory. Visitors are guaranteed not to see all of the same items at each visit. To experience the thrill of the hunt, visit the Copper Cricket at 15026 Washington Street, behind the Town Hall. Look for the sign as you enter the Town of Haymarket before the first street light. Add Copper Cricket at facebook.com/ thecoppercricketconsignments or call 703-743-2346 for more information. ❖

Benefits of an Injury
Injury, A Treasure Map of Discovery by Liba Spyros

e have all experienced an injury. And I am sure we have never stood up and screamed, “Hurray, I have injured myself.” Injuries are never at a convenient time, because we feel there is never an appropriate time to slow down. In most cases, we get discouraged and frustrated by an injury; however, there are some opportunities for growth when this occurs.

In all cases, seeking the opinion of a health care provider is important. Some injuries require a time of rest for healing. A modified training regime expedites healing. your chosen method of exercise. Perhaps adding massages and visits to a chiropractor will assist you in meeting your physical goals. Injury prevention is the ultimate desire, but once injured, we need a new mindset for the situation. No matter what your workout routine is, observing your breath, areas of stiffness, and muscular weaknesses are great places to start. As a former ballerina, I have strong memories of ignoring pain, blisters, muscle strains, and fatigue that could bring me to tears. Slowing down was for the weak, and honestly could leave the door open for other dancers to replace me. As a yoga studio owner, I find it revealing that these same guidelines apply to us as a culture. “No pain, no gain,” is far from a safe healthy mindset, but it is still a strongly held belief. Mindful
Notice what you are feeling in poses. For example, how do you feel in a forward fold? Are you feeling tight in your lower back or hamstrings? Adjust to safely align your body in this posture. Bending your knees may prevent lower back strain. Ask instructors before or after class, how to safely move in any posture that causes strong sensation. Sometimes the feelings are because you are opening your body in ways that you haven’t in a long while. Other times, modifications are necessary for your safety. Although the above illustration applies to yoga postures, the idea also applies to a gym workout. Have a trainer observe your alignment as you lift weights or use a piece of equipment. Their eye has been trained to see things that a mirror can’t divulge. Have a dialogue with
doesn’t mean easy. Work to your full capacity, but journey inward to listen with your mind, and central nervous system. Don’t ignore your body’s signals, because you think it makes you tough. Being wise is smart, and will prevent injury in the first place. The progression forward will actually be faster if we aren’t forced to pause for healing.
your trainer/instructor about how you feel in your movements. As a client of a facility, make sure that your instructor is watching you and the room of practitioners. Research studios or gyms that have their instructors walk around the room to observe all the participants from many angles. An instructor should also have the skill to adapt their class sequence and

plan for the people that show up to take class. It is crucial you seek classes where instructors are not just leading, but actively watching and assisting participants. Seek a studio/gym with highly trained instructors that continually improve their knowledge. Your safety is the combined effort of your skilled trainer, and your own wisdom in how you show up to train. When you are conditioning with an injury that allows you to still safely workout, use modifications to proceed wisely. A while ago, I strained my piriformis muscle because I let my ego get in the way of my body’s wisdom. I was amplifying a posture while all the appropriate bells and whistles were going off in my head. I knew my hamstrings and glutes weren’t ready to do this posture, but I pushed through anyway. I was practicing next to a friend, and I remember saying to her, “I broke it!” My injury was not just from the one posture, it was due to my not listening to and straining my body over time. Here I was an instructor, a coowner of the studio, and yet I had to modify my poses. I had to let go of performance ego (left over from years of dance), and truly practice what I had been preaching: “It is your practice, so don’t look at anyone else’s mat.” “Listen to the sensations your body is sending you, and move accordingly.” “Let go of performance evaluation.” “Everyday is a new day and your body performs differently everyday.” The reward came 2 months later when I amplified my practice back to my regular postures. I couldn’t believe it, I was stronger than I had been 2 months prior. By working each posture to my fullest potential, while being safe and conscientious about alignment, I had achieved more than I would have in my regular practice. What a lesson that was for me as an instructor and as a student.

Letting an alignment cue be a guideline for the practitioner’s body is what the instructor is trying to achieve. As instructors, we can’t feel how you are feeling in a posture. Those signals are internal and personal. I have learned how to take the alignment cues and make them work for my body. I have long hamstrings, but my lower back prefers if I bend my knees in a forward fold until I am through the sun salutation portion of class. Through this process, I have come through on the other side of my injury with greater body awareness, a smarter practice, and a much stronger body. The most valuable lesson was that, “more doesn’t always mean better.” Wise effort is the key to a healthy practice that has longevity. Wise effort doesn’t mean slacking off. It means that you will stay off the injured list and you can keep practicing everyday without being on the sidelines. My chiropractor and massage therapist are also part of my health regime. I no longer view them as an extravagance or an indulgence, but a necessary part of my preventative health team. Keeping myself out of crisis is better than getting myself out of trauma. Perhaps the most obvious part of healing and prevention is a diet that works for you and your unique body. As a yogi, I prefer a plant-based diet. The deeper I get into my yoga practice, my dietary desires are leaning this way. Again, not every diet is for every person. In a yoga practice,
you train yourself to tune into the communication between mind and body. If we are keen listeners, we start to learn which cravings are emotional and which are physical. A heated yoga practice fosters the need for increased water intake. Soon you start to realize that you want more high water content food. So after class, a nice juicy pear may be a better choice than French fries. When we really need to question our choices is when we start to fight the body’s natural healing process. For instance, it makes no sense to eat sugar, which causes inflammation, if you are going
to follow that sugar later in the day with an anti-inflammatory medicine such as Ibuprofen, or Acetaminophen. Take notice of everything that passes your lips. You can either support your healing process or impede it. Developing an awareness of our physicality, observing how we move, breathe, and think is the start to a lifetime of safe fulfilling workouts. Is your natural response to push past a healthy point of effort or do you give yourself too much slack? This knowledge is powerful information. Are you someone who works out so you can eat whatever you want? Or, do you use nutrition to help your body stay in peek form? The former works for a while, but you may start to notice aches, pains, stomach issues, etc creep into your life. When that happens, it may be time to eat to win. “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food,” Hippocrates. Although injuries are a real setback, we have an opportunity to use the injury as a treasure map to greater knowledge of our bodies, minds, and spirits. With this mindset, our setbacks become less about what we can’t do and more about what we can do. Keeping a positive outlook on the situation will allow you to see the good instead of the bad. In the end, you will gain invaluable wisdom that you did not possess prior to your injury. Again prevention is preferred; however should an injury occur, try to enjoy the treasure hunt. ❖

Author Patricia Daly-Lipe Gets to the Heart of the Matter By Maria Massaro
Opposite Page: Author, artist, and activist Dr. Patricia Daly-Lipe is a twelve-year resident of Haymarket, where she enjoys riding her horses and “watching the beautiful sunsets” from her deck. Right: A prominent parentage: Patricia’s grandfather Oliver Hazard Perry Johnson, mother Elisabeth Johnson, and grandmother Katharine Hemmick Johnson.
I
t is truly a test of one’s writing and editing skills to justly summarize the life and work of Dr. Patricia DalyLipe, for this individual’s story is vivid, resonant, and ongoing. Author, historian, artist, philosopher, polyglot, globetrotter, horse whisperer, expert raconteur—Patricia is a woman of enormous scope, unflagging purpose, and invigorating wisdom. You know you’re in for a real treat, as well as an overdue self-analysis, when someone gets a conversation underway by urging you to “take the time to look. That’s the key. See with your mind’s eye, because that’s who you really are. There are so many parts of you that need to be revealed by removing the veil.” Sit back and press “Record.” A twelve-year resident of Haymarket, Patricia is a published and awardwinning author whose book, Patriot Priest (Strategic Media Books, 2013), is soon to be featured as a Book Club read at the Haymarket Gainesville Community Library. A commemorative biography of Patricia’s great uncle, Monsignor William A. Hemmick, Patriot Priest immerses readers in 1916 Europe and the unremitting trench warfare of World War I. Committed to helping the troops, Hemmick was proclaimed the “Patriot Priest of Picardy” by the Army and Navy, and he would ultimately become the only American Canon of Saint Peter’s representing the Knights of Malta to the Holy Sea. Reviewer Donna
Evers of The Georgetowner hits home in her reaction to this poignant story of an extraordinary man: “[Hemmick’s] steadfast sense of duty in the face of death and destruction is especially moving to us today, as we try to make sense of the endless wars that rage around us, and the inevitable moral question of whether we should ‘get involved’.” This legacy and lineage have not only made for compelling literature but have also inspired Patricia to live as fully and meaningfully as one can, to embrace the enfolding world around us and heed the personal narratives of the past. “You can learn from history. You need to learn. You need to understand what somebody did and what they said,” she opined when asked what she would
her own and that of her illustrious ancestors. A native of La Jolla, California, she moved to Haymarket in 2004 for its proximity to D.C. and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Both Patricia and her husband, Steele, also have family ties to this area, as well as a passion for horse riding, hence their decision to settle in northern Virginia. In between her lives on each coast, Patricia traveled to Italy and Belgium, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy at the Catholic University of Louvain in the mid-1960s. Upon returning to the U.S., Patricia earned her Ph.D. in Humanities, specializing in Creative Arts and Communication, while teaching at various schools and universities and raising three children from a previous marriage.
like readers to take away from her books. As both a writer and a painter, Patricia aims to create works that inspire people to transcend themselves by opening that mind’s eye and seeing beyond the limited range of perception. “I hope to make them a better person as a result.” To be sure, Patricia has learned from history,
With the encouragement of author and television host Richard Lederer, Patricia was primed to pen her first book, Myth, Magic, and Metaphor: A Journey into the Heart of Creativity (Rockit Press, 2005), following a succession of writing projects and awards. With the premise “to experience the sense of wonder we knew as children,” Myth,

Magic, and Metaphor incites readers to liberate their imagination and trust their inner muse while examining the components of the creative process. Surprisingly, Patricia did not set out to be a writer; rather, her literary career unfolded through the incitements and requests of others. “I just do what people ask me to do,” she simply said of her assorted opportunities. Nevertheless, she has always been an avid reader and an appreciator of evocative prose. Among her favorite authors are William Faulkner and James Joyce (who lived above her mother’s apartment in Paris), and their influence can be detected in her experimental use of language and stream-of-consciousness style of writing. Affirming this parallel, she proclaimed, “I love books that are open-ended because they invite you to come back and make another trip through them, so that you can go to another level of understanding. That is a well-written book; that is not a formula.” Self-discovery through creativity, curiosity, observation, reflection, and connection—this is the nexus of the nine books Patricia has written to date, as well as the theme of her work as a painter. An adherent of surrealism and abstract expressionism, Patricia started oil painting while living in Europe and has since won awards for her creations, a sample of which can be viewed at www.patricialipe.com. “You can enter into paint your own feelings and emotions, so you can relate to what you’re seeing,” she remarked of the creative process as applied to visual art. Ever the mentor, she advises aspiring artists to “let what’s stored in your memory come through. Don’t go according to a plotted plan; just allow the paint to express itself.” Patricia’s depth and expression of feeling are further revealed in another of her passions: horses. Formerly a breeder and racer, Patricia started rescuing thoroughbreds when she arrived in Virginia. “I didn’t like what was happening with racehorses,” she explained. Having witnessed too many abhorrent conditions and tragic fates, she wrote numerous articles

for magazines and newspapers, giving voice to these animals and raising awareness of their plight. “People need to know the reality of these thoroughbreds, horses who might have tripped or fallen or were simply too slow to continue a racing career. They are individuals. Each has a personality imbued with emotions that include compassion and compatibility. We humans can reap the reward, but only if we are willing to listen to them and grant them the care they deserve.” To date, Patricia and Steele have found loving homes for twelve horses, and they continue to dote on two retired geldings, Teddy and Justin. Yet, as Patricia added, one needn’t take in horses to be a lifesaver. Assisting on a farm or adopting a horse and supplying the funds needed for its care can make an enormous impact. Clockwise From Top: Evocative and esoteric, Patricia’s paintings are often inspired by visions and dreams. Patricia with husband Steele at the Jewel Ball in La Jolla, one of the oldest and most respected social, cultural, and philanthropic events in San Diego. The National Metropolitan Bank on 15th Street NW in D.C., where grandfather O. H. P. Johnson was President and Patricia “waved from the balcony to President Eisenhower on his inaugural parade.” The Lyceum in Alexandria was once the home of Patricia’s great aunt Sara Johnson McGuire, who “sold” the home to her husband Dr, Hugh McGuire for “eternal love.”
as Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center, Middleburg Humane Foundation, and Equine Rescue League offer adoption, volunteer, and donation programs for those who would like to get involved and save these magnificent animals from neglect, abuse, and slaughter. Even with all her undertakings and achievements, Patricia still looks ahead and plans her next move. Now in the process of finalizing her new book Historic Tales of La Jolla (Arcadia Publishing), she is already anticipating future projects: “I’d like to give fiction a try. I’d also like to illustrate my own book at some point, to do my own painting for my own story.” Beyond that, she would love her book A Cruel Calm: Paris Between the Wars (Rockit Press, 2015) to be made into a film, “not just because it’s my book and my mother’s life, but it was a period of history that was unique—a period when the arts were at their peak, when Paris was the center of art and of everything that was creative. Everything was happening. People were inspired; they were opening up to creativity. You can learn so much from that.” Insightful, expressive, and unquestionably creative, Patricia clearly lives what she lauds, embodying all the qualities she goads others to embrace and ignite. More than great reads, her books are exhortations for us to see
from other perspectives and to heed that which really matters. At a time when conversation is reduced to typed fragments and communication is an endangered skill, Patricia’s works are a wake-up call to our technocratic stupor and our emotionally stifled way of interacting, rousing us to honor the lessons of history, the messages of nature, and the wonder of imagination. “So many people feel like they can’t tell [what has happened in their life]. But if you find an outlet, even if it’s just you alone in a room writing it down or using your computer, you will feel better, because it isn’t doing anybody any good to keep it lodged inside. And you can help somebody else. If you have a problem of any kind, you need to learn to express your experience so that somebody else can say ‘You know, somebody else felt like that’ or ‘Somebody else went through that.’ And then you’re not alone anymore.” May we all find the courage to remove the veil and make a connection, for that is indeed the key. To learn more about Dr. Patricia Daly-Lipe, please visit her website at www.literarylady. com, where you can read excerpts or her work and securely purchase her books via PayPal. Their close, jovial friendship is immediately evident and their laughter is contagious. White and Dent have partnered to bring fresh, high quality blue crabs to Haymarket and surrounding communities, and customers are coming from both near and far. An idea that was 3 years in the making, Dent White and Blue Crabs opened in late Spring after months of hard work, setbacks, and struggles but is now thriving. And the partnership couldn’t

in Maryland or certain areas of Virginia and he or she will quickly explain. Blue crabs aren’t simply something to eat. They are an experience, a relaxing time with friends, a tradition passed down through families, and a special treat for celebratory occasions. Children are taught by their parents how to pick them, with the goal being not to waste a single bite of the meat. Families gather around a table, usually covered with newspaper, for hours of messy picking and conversations. There is a process by which you open and pick crabs. Similarly, there is an art form to cooking them. Dent White and Blue Crab’s secret family recipe for the seasoning was created by Kip
Dodson who is White’s father-in-law and Dent’s uncle. This recipe and their boiling process is something Dent and White keep close to their chests. It’s also something they don’t take lightly, just like the quality of their crabs. It is of utmost importance to them to ensure the satisfaction of their customers. Dent keeps a checklist of how to get the best product: right crab, right salinity. He explains that the crabs he chooses have to come from the right environment for the best quality, not too salty but just enough. He calls them black belly crabs because the black marks on the bottom of the crab show that it has not recently shed its shell and has been eating well, which results in a hard shell crab that is packed with meat. “We make it a point to tell our crabbers to toss back the white bellies that have just shed,” says Dent. This knowledge of the water was cultivated in Dent’s childhood with hours spent with his grandfather crabbing or working at his crab stand. Carrying a Dent name that is synonymous with crabbing, Dent says “I bleed it.” But working in a field that is dependent on mother nature is also unpredictable and “there is no guarantee” of what each day will bring. No matter what though, Dent and White have been successful at doing what they set out to do, which is build a family business. The employees are all family members, which is evident in a visit to the stand which feels a little bit more like a get together than most places. Dent White and Blue Crabs is located at 12814 Lee Highway in Gainesville between the Battlefields and Virginia Gateway Center. I started working as a Technician servicing copiers in 1988. For the first two years of my career, I was the number one technician at the Fortune 500 company. During my third year, I was also in the Marine reserve and was called into active duty for the first Gulf War. When I returned, I left that company and went to work for a local organization until it was sold a year later. In May of 1992, I started MP Copiers with the goal of providing the best service in the area. How does your business serve the HaymarketGainesville community?
We provide affordable copiers, printers, MFP’s, print management and document management systems to local businesses. Our plan includes the equipment, all parts, labor, toner, supplies and a four hour on site service response time. All at significantly lower prices than most of our competitors and at a fixed cost.

The greatest moment is when I receive a call or email after we install equipment at a new customer’s site. They have reached out to say how pleased they were with our team and our level of professionalism - how easy and quick the whole process was. I am blessed to receive several of these calls every week. Have you had an experience with your business that you wish you could redo differently?
It took me a couple of years in the beginning to realize that all of my employees deserved a second chance, sometimes a third or fourth chance.
I regularly attend the meetings and networking and sponsor events occasionally. For you, what is the primary benefit of being an HGBA member?
Meeting new business people. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
I have lived all over the world. I am where I want to be. We truly live in a great community that has so much and everything you could ever want within a few hours. There is the beach, the mountains, Washington DC and one of the best business environments anywhere. If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and why?
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?
To Fly! Traffic wouldn’t be a concern anymore.
In business, always do the right thing by taking care of your customer. Do the best that you can and then do just a little bit more. Try to keep every customer you have forever.
If you could be famous for something, what would you want to be known for?

Fauquier Hospital Promotes Colon Health
Have you thought about your colon recently? Well, today’s the day. Your colon (otherwise known as the large intestine) is the last stop in the digestive tract. At more than five feet long, it’s the final opportunity for your body to extract nutrients from the food you eat and prepare what’s left for elimination. A healthy colon ensures that you get all the benefits of your healthy diet and - along with the rest of your digestive tract - helps to keep you feeling energetic and happy. The Key to Athletic Speed:
Total Athletic Development
By Colby Schreckengost MS, BS, CPT, FMS,
N
o matter what the sport, the trend is that speed is the ultimate characteristic that coaches are looking for when evaluating athletes. In fact, speed seems to be all that coaches, parents, members of the media and the athletes themselves are talking about these days. Of course, it’s not the only factor in athletic success, but its number one in most competitive sports. Virtually every athlete that walks through our doors is told by his or her coach “He needs to get quicker and more explosive.” Rarely do we hear “she needs to be stronger & more powerful.” But you truly cannot get one without the other. In other words, to get faster you need to get stronger! Genetics plays the biggest role in an athlete’s ability to be fast. But in today’s competitive sports environment any speed improvement can make the difference between athletes making the team or not. As a Strength and Conditioning professional and Athletic Performance Coach, I do believe that we can improve on our genetically gifted speed or lack thereof. But to be honest, we can’t take

any athlete that runs 4.9 seconds in the forty yard-dash and make him run a 4.5. So if a coach promises this to you, just realize that he or she is most likely telling you this to sell his/her services. The goal should always be to maximize the athlete’s potential and get them to run their fastest at every opportunity. Those opportunities could come in the shape of contests, games, combines or showcases. Let’s first look at what we are talking about when discussing speed. Top-End Speed vs Sport Speed Unless you’re a track and field athlete, top-end speed is rarely used in most sports. Wide receivers and defensive backs in football, outfielders in baseball and middies in soccer and lacrosse are the athletes that utilize top-end speed the most. The next time you watch a game in any sport, observe the athletes and not focus on the ball. It can be difficult, but as a professional, that’s how I spend the majority of my time. You will soon see that what we label as speed, which incorporates most or all of the movements listed below: Top-End Speed- all out sprinting for 30 yards or more at a time

Acceleration- ability to reach top speed the quickest Deceleration- ability to slow down under control Change of Direction- ability to cut and move in multi-directions quickly Lateral Movement- ability to be elusive and to defend from side-to-side Forward/Backward Change of Direction- ability to start and stop moving in a linear pattern First Step Quickness- ability to start from an athletic stance or barely moving and beat your opponent to the ball. Quickness off the Ground- ability to not only jump higher but to get off the ground quicker when heading a ball or getting a rebound. Reaction- the ability to react to a ball or to defend an opponent or swing a club, bat or racket. While coaching the running backs at the University of Tulsa, I had the pleasure of coaching a few 1,000 yard backs. What’s amazing about those guys is none of them were sub-4.6 forty-yard dash backs. In fact one of them ran 4.8 (slow, right?) But when it was game time, most could flat out run the ball. They all

believed they were fast and they played that way. They could change direction, make amazing cuts, break tackles, had great vision, understood the game and were elusive in the open field. The fastest athlete that I coached ran 4.3 seconds in the forty yard dash. That is really fast and explosive in a straight line. Unfortunately, he was very stiff, took forever to make a cut, not very elusive and his time was mostly spent watching from the sidelines. He ended up being more successful running track (a linear sport) than playing football. So when we talk about speed being the number one factor in determining playing ability in most sports, we first need to analyze the needs of the sport. Like: What are the distances that need to be covered? Is it a small space like volleyball? Slightly bigger like basketball? Or a field like football,
baseball, lacrosse, or soccer? What is required of the position? Soccer Goalies need to jump and move linearly (forward and backward) and laterally (side-toside). Offensive lineman in football basically play in a 10 yard box but need to possess the quickness to strike people and push them around. A tennis player needs to possess all movements but only in a 60 X 80 feet space. When analyzing the needs of athletes, we first need to consider which athletes will be successful in which sports and most successful at which position in that sport. Evaluation: Aside from the obvious arm swing errors, only a well-trained coach will be able to disseminate where athletes fall short in running technique and lack of power. Every athlete is different, but in a group or team setting, we address the mistakes the majority of the athletes make. By utilizing tools like
the Functional Movement Screen, we can determine deficiencies in an athlete’s mobility, flexibility and core strength. We can also use hand-held or electronic timing instruments to create base lines to track improvement. Video analysis utilizing special software is a great tool that allows real-time feedback for athletes. After the evaluation an attack plan is developed based on the needs of the athlete. Muscle Fiber: Fast Twitch vs Slow Twitch Elite athletes in field and court sports are blessed with an abundance of fast twitch muscle fibers. Whereas your average marathon runner is born with less. Even the untrained eye can tell a quick player from a slow one. We’re all human and born with a certain amount of both red (fast twitch) and white (slow twitch) muscles. The key is targeting your training to develop the desired training affect.
As you look at this pyramid below that Jason Riddell, our Director of Athlete Performance, and I created you will see our philosophy on preparing athletes through the different stages of their careers. Younger athletes tend to start at the bottom while a more mature or elite athlete may start closer to the top. Bodyweight Mastery & Physical Preparedness: Athletes that are strong in relationship to their own body weight are usually fast. Think back to the elementary school P.E. classes and how the kid that could do the most pull-ups and push-ups was generally the fastest kid in the school. It only makes sense that improving bodyweight mastery and carrying less body fat (think more efficiency) is step one. Basic Mechanics & Repetition Method: At this level we’re improving running mechanics like posture enhancements, arm swing and knee drive. We also start to develop multidirectional movement skills, first-step quickness and doing basic strength training to improve coordination. Olympic Lifting Regressions and Sprint Mechanic Progressions: This athlete is getting ready for the rigors of high school sports. At this stage (think 13-14 year olds) we not only improve strength but introduce more central nervous system training (box jumps and dumbbell snatch) to improve quickness and power. Sprint mechanics are further developed adding some weighted sled runs. Max Effort Lifting, Plyometrics & Olympic Lifting Progressions: Now we’re really focused on improving our athlete’s horsepower with max effort strength training and developing the super stiffness needed for explosive power in jumps and more advanced Olympic lifts. Linear speed and multidirectional competitive drills are added to decrease reaction times.
Advanced Speed Mechanics, Combine Prep, & Dynamic Effort Method: At this stage, getting athletes to move from high school to college or from college to pro is the goal. Advanced knowledge is important in order to improve the athlete without injury. Dynamic effort training requires closely monitored athletes improving speed with weight and the sets are usually timed instead of counting 6 or 8 repetitions. As you can see the progressions for developing a faster, more explosive athlete have come a long way since the coach yelled at you to “run faster!” It’s important to know that without good foundational strength training and mobility work, improvements in speed and quickness are virtually impossible. As with anything in athletics, knowing when and how to progress the athlete is paramount. Other factors not mentioned here but are always included in our programming are proper nutrition, sleep and recovery strategies. We spend an enormous amount of time studying and coaching this stuff. It’s what we do. All day! Everyday!

Identifying Tick Diseases In Dogs by Charlotte Wagner
T
he leaves are beginning to tumble off trees as the dog days of summer come to an end. The incoming milder weather has us out playing in the leaves with our dogs, taking long walks in the woods, and tossing ball with Fido in the yard. With an increase of outdoor activity also comes a signiďŹ cantly increased risk for tickborne illnesses, which can affect humans and canines alike. Thousands of pets become infected yearly when ticks attach onto dogs and transmit disease. Amongst the most common conditions seen in our area are: Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Understanding symptoms, regular screening, and prevention is key to ensuring our safety and the wellbeing of our pets this autumn. Lyme Disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and is associated

with the Deer Tick. It is commonly believed that a tick must be attached to your dog for approximately 48 hours inorder for disease transmission to occur. Common symptoms include: lameness, fever, swollen lymph nodes and joins, and loss of appetite. In more extreme cases kidney disease, heart issues, and neurological symptoms may appear. Ehrlichiosis is transmitted by the Brown Dog Tick and Lone Star Tick and has been seen worldwide. Dogs may suffer from depression, reduced appetite, fever, lameness, stiff and painful joints, and bruising. Unlike other tick-borne diseases, symptoms often appear within less than a month. Anaplasmosis is carried by Deer Ticks, Western Black Legged Ticks, and Brown Dog Ticks. Signs and symptoms are similar to those of Ehrlichiosis and include joint pain, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. The disease may present itself in as little as 2

weeks after infection. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is transmitted by both the American Dog Tick and the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Tick. Disease transmission can occur in as little as 5 hours after the tick has attached to the dog. Signs of infection include: fever, reduced appetite, depression, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, difďŹ culty getting up. More developed cases may include heart abnormalities, pneumonia, kidney disease, declined liver function, and neurological symptoms. Diagnostic Tools Due to the high prevalence of tick disease in our area, veterinarians are encouraging basic screening as part of a regular annual wellness exam. Some species of ticks, such as the Deer Tick, can even carry multiple diseases at once. A general reference of Lyme Disease, Ehrlichionsis, or Anaplasmosis exposure can be seen when conducting a basic
heartworm test (often referred to as a snap test). Although this test detects the presence of antibodies in the blood, it is not a conclusive diagnostic tool. Further testing to establish more accurate antibody levels will better help determine diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and more uncommon tickborne illnesses are not identified on basic testing. If your pet is showing signs of potential tick disease ensure to discuss more extensive blood panels with your vet. In most tick-related conditions symptoms will not appear until multiple months from the initial bite or infection. It is vital for pet owners to know the options when it comes to disease intervention and prevention as some extreme cases of tick diseases may be fatal.
Prevention Veterinary products and over the counter medications have varying degrees of effectiveness in preventing tick-borne diseases depending on your location. Some substances are used topically, meaning the liquid is applied to the skin via a plastic tube on a monthly basis. Oral medications may be given once a month, or every three months, in order to prevent fleas and ticks. A variety of flea and tick collars are also available with effectiveness ranging from 6-8 months. Consult with your veterinarian in regards to the optimal flea and tick solutions for your individual pet. Be aware that some products will kill fleas or ticks, whereas others are designed to also repel them. Take into consideration any other pets in the household (as cats can be averse to some topical solutions put on dogs). Also think about your daily interactions with your pet, and the safety of your kids when selecting a preventative - some topical and collars may leave a residue. Charlotte Wagner is a certified animal trainer and behavior consultant. She advocates that prevention, management, redirection, and training of alternate responses is key to training success. She owns and operates Duskland Training and Behavior in Warrenton and can be regularly seen at conformation dog shows, agility events, rally obedience trials, therapy visits, and community gatherings with one or more of her precious pets.
