s there anything lovelier than spring in Virginia? I don’t think so. With the trees budding and the flowers blooming, there’s a sense of “we survived winter!” in the air, and that’s worth celebrating. So, we are. On the following pages you’ll find features that celebrate local coaches, tutors, bounce parties, and beers on a mission. Others that celebrate Marines who clean, artists with autism, and a sports team that will steal your heart. And still others that celebrate great wines, spring cleaning, and the incredible programming the Prince William Public Library offers to help kids with diverse abilities succeed. We’re honored to celebrate our incredible community and hope you enjoy this issue. Happy reading!

Spring Cleaning…

O

nce again the green leaves and blooming flowers herald the arrival of spring, and that means it’s time for for both our literal and figurative spring cleaning. This month we are clearing out some of your older questions and making room for your new ones. Enjoy!

bolts. We prefer concrete furniture. There are numerous vendors producing beautiful outdoor furniture in concrete that once placed is unlikely to be stolen, easy to clean, and can be harmlessly adorned with chalk to celebrate whatever occasion your business wishes to promote.

Pro Tip: Spalling is a concern in the winter due to the freeze and thaw cycles, but the pieces can be covered for protection or just allowed to gain “character”. What can I do to really “glam” up my bathroom without spending too much money?

We love integrated LED lighted mirrors. When you consider the savings of eliminating a vanity light from your remodel budget, they are very affordable. You should have electricity already at the mirror if you had a light above, so no need to run new wires. We get anti-fog units often with built-in speakers. Depending on the size they should only cost a few hundred all in.

Pro Tip: If you are worried that you will not have enough general light you can also retrofit the exhaust fan with an LED lit model. Most installations take under 10 minutes and the units frequently include built in speakers if that’s something you’d like. I’m nervous about how some of the things my GC is suggesting are going to look. Is there a way to get some reassurance?

Sounds like you are worried about a subjective rather than an objective concern. When we hear similar concerns we recommend having a rendering created. A near scale representation of what the final product will look like often helps people decide in moments whether or not they will like the final product. And while a photorealistic rendering is nice, we suggest you stick with an elevation. Your wallet will thank us.

Pro Tip: Many paint companies and more than a few furniture companies are adding augmented reality functions to their apps or webpages. They are far from perfect, but a free answer in a few moments may be all you need. Our large condominium complex wants to bring down electricity costs for residents. Any suggestions?

We’re considering building rather than buying. Are there pitfalls to buying a house plan online?

Yes, numerous. Houses should be designed for the climate, must conform to any number of local or regional restrictions, and absolutely must keep the specific topography in mind. You can’t always dig a basement, or orient in any random direction. There are plans that require less review and modification, and plans that require more, but either way I would start with selecting the builder, architect, or designer.

Pro Tip: When shown plans, we always consider likely furniture placement and window treatments in each room. While your house will probably look good when driving by, we want to make sure it works for those living inside as well. I worry about people stealing our shop’s outdoor furniture. Any suggestions?

While it’s possible to steal almost anything with enough time and dedication, making it more difficult should deter most thieves. Some businesses bring their furniture in at the end of every night, and some anchor theirs to the ground with

APRIL 2022

Start with having an energy audit performed. Depending on where you live, the electric company may either provide this service for free or will often offer rebates on some of the work it recommends. Especially with an older building, I would expect you could save hundreds if not thousands per resident over the long haul.

Pro Tip: If you aren’t ready for an audit, one thing you can almost certainly do is switch all the light bulbs to LED bulbs. One small commercial establishment we know saved over $200/month just making that change. hg

YOUTH SOCCER COACH

Juned Refai: Teaching Kids to be Successful On and Off the Field BY COLT BRADLEY

W

hen you think of what it might be like to be a youth sports coach, it’s most likely you imagine that the job revolves around teaching kids how to be proficient athletes and encouraging them to be the best they can be. However, while constantly striving for success is important, local coach Juned Refai of Gainesville believes there are equally important lessons about teamwork, sportsmanship, and recovering from failure that can be taught. Refai coaches his son’s youth coed soccer team where he not only teaches the kids how to be good at the game by having them practice drills on the field, but also how to be successful and confident off the field.

10 Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle

APRIL 2022

“Coach Juned stands apart from other coaches due to the amount of time he spends on individual players during practice,” said Erik Elington whose son plays for Refai. “He doesn’t simply direct the team, he shows them what to do and leads by example.”

A first generation Indian American, Refai works for the Department of Defense in the Office of Naval Operations, a role he desired because of his admiration of Muhammad Ali. During the Gulf War, Ali acted as a negotiator, helping to secure the release of 15 American hostages. Since that moment, he has loomed large in Refai’s life. Part of Refai’s interest in coaching soccer stems from his desire to have played soccer when he was younger. “In the 90s, soccer was not as famous as American football,” Refai said. “But now it has taken a very positive turn following in the footsteps of Europe, Africa and other parts of the world. It’s a sport that has the ability to facilitate cultural exchange and bring people together.”

The other reason he wanted to coach soccer was to be a positive presence in his son’s life. When he realized that he was designated as the head coach instead of the assistant he signed up to be, Refai accepted the role with the mentality that life is about taking chances and trying new things. It’s helped him face some of the challenges of coaching with a sense of optimism and purpose. “Coaching a bunch of five-year-olds and having them listen takes understanding.” Refai said. Being required to repeat himself and deal with behavioral issues that occasionally crop up can be difficult, but Refai embraces the challenge because he believes that coaching today should help players grow as people off the field whereas coaching in the 1990s was solely focused on improving athletic ability. He hopes that his style of coaching will help his players perform and behave well in school, treat others with respect, and have confidence in themselves. A key aspect of coaching soccer is teaching young players to pass the ball to one another. This may seem ob-

Clockwise from top left: Refai with the number one reason he got into coaching: his son. A teenage Juned Refai with his lifelong hero, Muhammad Ali. When coaching, Refai has a few core values he works to instill in his players. “Don’t be scared to face your fears, that’s number one. Number two, if you really want to be an asset to the team don’t just make yourself better, make everyone around you better.” Picture day with the team.

vious, but Refai believes it can truly cement the ideas of teamwork, respect, and problem solving at an early age. “Teaching young players to pass the ball when other players are open correlates to when they get older and have work and school projects,” Refai said. “It teaches them not to hog the project to themselves and try to take all the credit. It’s very important to get them to understand the value of teamwork” Moving beyond teaching young players teamwork, Refai works with them on learning to take constructive criticism. For example, when a player needed to step up his defensive skills, Refai took him aside for a private conversation and encouragement. “That helps open up young players to taking constructive criticism and input as they get older,” Refai said. “It helps prepare them for when they get a bad grade or fail a test or have a bad day at work. It’s important to instill the ability to rebound from failure at a young age and soccer is an excellent vehicle to do it with.” Refai has a few core values he works to instill in his players. “Don’t be scared to face your fears, that’s number one. Number two, if you really want to be an asset to the team, don’t just make yourself better, make everyone around you better.” Clearly those values resonate with the parents of his players. “Coach Juned is a spectacular coach and leader in that he gives his full energy and enthusiasm to teaching and training his players about the game of soccer,” said Erik Elington whose son plays for Refai. “He stands apart from other coaches due to the amount of time he spends on individual players during practice. He doesn’t simply direct the team, he shows them what to do and leads by example.” When asked if he could leave his players with one lesson that they would take with them for the rest of their lives Refai said simply, “Always be positive. Find the positive in everything.” hg

S

ince 2008, when Dr. Towanna Burrous founded Towanna Freeman & Associates, a management consulting firm located in Haymarket that offered executive coaching as an additional service, she has been evolving her business and focus to meet the changing needs of the times. In 2011, when she recognized an increased demand for diverse coaches, and no professional networks in which to find them, she created one - the Black Life Coaches Network. Then, in 2015, she rebranded the company as CoachDiversity Institute. The firm offers various executive coach training and education programs. “Coaching is a critical skill that 21st-century leaders need to unlock potential and performance in their people,” she says. “CoachDiversity attracts forward-thinking leaders worldwide who want to shift organizational culture to increase employee engagement and performance.” Making it her mission to diversify the coaching industry to provide her clients with credentialed coaching professionals who were not only racially and ethnically diverse but also of different ages, abilities, gender, and religions was only the first step. There was still more work to do. “I realized the International Coaching Federation didn't offer a curriculum that taught coaches to coach across diverse lines,” says Dr. Burrous. “I wrote the first-ever coaching curriculum grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion.” Dr. Burrous also concluded that not all coaches were

trained equally. Some of them needed to improve their coaching skills because their clients were coming to them with a lot of different challenges that were specific to people of color and to people with different sexual orientations. “Now, we are a training school,” she says. “People come to us to learn to coach across diverse lines.” Students include people who want to start their own business and want to be an internal coach inside their organization, or who want to be leaders in their organizations which they’d like to see become more inclusive. “Since 2015, we've graduated over 700 coaching professionals,” says Dr. Burrous. “This includes people who self-identify as white and want to work with people who are different from them.” CoachDiversity Institute offers three courses that build upon each other and provide students a certification in coaching. “There’s an associate level, a certified professional level, and an advanced level,” she explains, “and each program takes between four to six months to complete. Our students are executives, senior consultants, helping professionals, diversity practitioners from Fortune 500 companies, the federal government, and big non-profits. Many of them are making significant changes within their organizations.” CoachDiversity Institute’s growth has been phenomenal since adding this new offering to their portfolio. In 2021, it ranked number 524 on Inc. magazine’s 5000 list of fastest growing privately held companies in the U.S.

or Monica and James Lambert of Nokesville, 2020 wasn’t too bad. While many businesses shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some, like Lambert Bounce Parties, found a way to pivot. People still wanted to have fun with their families but were too nervous to do so outside of their homes, so Lambert Bounce Parties brought the fun to them.

18 Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle

Monica and James launched Lambert Bounce Parties in December 2016. Their daughters were small and loved bounce houses, (who doesn’t?) and they had a friend who recently opened his own rental company and thought it could be a great side gig for them. They decided to give it a try and it quickly became a booming business. They purchased a few bounce houses and as word spread, their

business grew rapidly. “The more we rented and saw how happy people were, the more excited we were to buy a new bounce house for the next year,” said Monica. You might think that bounce house rentals are strictly for the younger set. But you’d be wrong. Lambert Bounce Parties rents bounce houses for adults for any occasion, such as graduation parties, family get togethers, field day competitions (kids and adults alike) and even bridal showers. The combos are their best sellers, and can include a combination of a slide, bounce area and obstacle course, or other fun features depending on the age group it’s designed for. “We rented the King Castle Combo for my son’s birthday, and it was awesome,” said Lea Moore of Warrenton. “Delivery and set-up were perfect before the party. The kids had a blast, and we couldn’t get them off it! Lambert’s crew didn’t come back to pick it up until the next day, so my kids even played in it again the next morning. We will definitely be renting from Lambert’s again for the next party.” When the pandemic hit, Monica and James lost their ‘bread and butter’ regular rentals for church gatherings, schools and festivals. But as families started to get creative – and

with the help of creative Facebook marketing – the Lamberts started to see an uptick in backyard parties. And because they don’t just rent bounce houses, they also have inflatable movie screens, popcorn and concessions and dunk tanks, families eager for fun have plenty of options. As a family-owned business, they prioritize things that matter to their own family. Things like cleanliness, for instance. Even before the pandemic, cleanliness and hygiene was always top of mind for the Lamberts. So much so that they didn’t need to change their cleaning protocol, which includes sanitizing every unit with commercial grade sanitizers that don’t use harsh chemicals, when the pandemic hit. They also power wash units as needed. “Because we take such serious care of our bounce houses, they tend to last a lot longer than most,” said Monica. “But when one starts to show wear and tear, we replace it with a brand-new one.” If you’re thinking a bounce house business sounds like fun, for the Lamberts it certainly is. Their older daughters work with them, and several of their friends return seasonally to work there too. And if you’re curious what the Lambert’s favorite bounce house is, because let’s face it, they’ve tried virtually every inflatable available … that would be the 27-foot-tall water slide with a slip and slide at the end. hg Lambert Bounce Parties is based in Nokesville and serves all of Northern Virginia. Celebrating Diverse Abilities Inclusive Programming for Children at the Library BY JEANINE RAGHUNATHAN, HAYMARKET GAINESVILLE LIBRARY

W

hat is “inclusive programming?” This type of programming and learning is for children with additional learning needs and special requirements but is done in a mainstream environment. At Haymarket Gainesville Library, we have been offering a variety of inclusive and diverse programs to help meet that need for some time. The Adapted Story Time, a monthly special program, is one example. Adapted Story Time is a great way for children to learn group dynamics, improve social skills, share, and more. These story times are created using a combination of gross and fine motor play along with stories and songs. Children are encouraged to express themselves in a diverse learning environment. These story times also allow parents of children with disabilities to connect with other parents to share resources and ideas. Most importantly, we hope to encourage reading and learning and set up children for success as they prepare to enter preschool settings where these skills will be important. We have also been offering the Building Buddies program, which originated as a parent/child group welcoming all abilities to come together for stories and networking. Recently, it split into two groups: Building Buddies for children and Different Dream Parenting for parents to support and network with other parents. These groups are geared to all ages and all abilities. The best thing about inclusive programming is that it is just that – inclusive and for everyone! We encourage you to check out the programs listed here and join us.

ooking at art can bring people joy, soothe their souls and foster an appreciation of life. Being able to create art is even more incredible; Joe Baker of Bristow knows this well. “It's my favorite thing to do,” says Joe. “I like free drawing and sketching buildings and all that. It makes me happy and I like doing fun things.” The 21-year-old ink artist has faced many challenges in his life. “He was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old,” says his mother, Colleen. “He was having a really hard time writing, so in kindergarten we pushed for occupational therapy. Within a couple years of OT, he started writing and started drawing and just never stopped.” When Joe was in the fifth grade, he had his first major seizure. “We think the change into puberty was what prompted it; a third of kids with autism end up with epilepsy,” she says.

APRIL 2022

Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle 25

But art has always been there for him. It was a way to wind down after a school day and a vehicle to get his feelings out. While at Patriot High School, he took an art class and was also on the Unified Sports basketball team. “He loved playing,” says his mother. Unfortunately, Joe’s epilepsy became much worse and Colleen, a teacher for 29 years, the last of which were in Prince William County, decided to quit working in order to stay home and care for him. She also home schooled Joe so he could obtain his high school diploma, which he proudly did. When COVID hit, the idea of turning Joe’s passion into an actual business took hold. “I was doing some life skills with him like managing money,” she says. “We were stuck at home, and we made one of our bedrooms into an art studio. We bought all the furniture and spruced it up and bought a bunch of art equipment.” In September of 2020, Artfully Joe was up and running. Joe goes into his studio every weekday afternoon at 1:00 and usually works until 4:00, except for Fridays, which he and his mom call Fun Fridays. “We think it's going great,” says Colleen. “We're always trying to come up with something different, so in addition to the drawings, we’ve added note cards to our repertoire, and made calendars for the holidays. We haven't really been to any official art shows yet but are looking to do some.” Right now, some of Joe’s artwork can be found at The Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm in Gainesville, where he

also did a meet and greet in February. As with many small at-home businesses, initial customers consisted mainly of family and friends. But now, Artfully Joe receives orders from as far away as California, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Florida. It’s not surprising. There are wonderful collections of flowers, animals, silhouettes and more available online. Joe encourages people to buy his artwork. “They can hang it up somewhere in their house and put it in a nice frame and love it,” he says. Colleen believes Joe gets his talent from her father. “I'm crafty, not artsy like him, but his grandfather is an artist, although not by trade. His mother’s family was from Copenhagen, Denmark and he had a couple artists in the family that still have artwork there.” Joe and Colleen often brainstorm together about what he should draw next. “We have a whiteboard in his studio that somebody made for us and we decorate it for the seasons and we put ideas on it,” she says. “We also put up what we have going on that month.” Colleen enjoys helping Joe with his business. “I help him with ideas for social media and the website, and with purchases and shipping, and I try to include him in what I'm doing or what we sell. “It can be challenging for those with his issues to find a job. This has been great because he can see the benefits of working, and yet, if he has a seizure one day, he can stop and rest. He has that flexibility.” In addition to his business, Joe is also excited about becoming an uncle this summer. “I have a sister who is pregnant now and her name is Abby,” he says. “I also have three dogs – Billy, Baxter, and Petey.” Joe will take commissions drawing other people’s dogs, but not his own. He wants to keep them all to himself. “I'm really good,” says Joe. “I really love how I draw things and color them.” He would love for others to follow him and see his amazing pieces on social media. He also posts videos of himself in his studio, which are a must-see! hg You can follow Artfully Joe on: Facebook- Joe Baker Instagram- @artfullyjoe Twitter-Joe Baker TikTok- @theartfullyjoe Commission a custom piece or purchase one of Artfully Joe’s works here: bonanza.com/booths/ArtfullyJoe

Patriot High School’s Unified Team Celebrating athletes across the spectrum BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY PAUL LARA

ports brings people together, and the camaraderie found among players on teams is often phenomenal. This sense of sportsmanship and cohesiveness should be open to everyone, regardless of mental ability, and the Special Olympics Unified Sports teams ensure just that. About 1.4 million people worldwide take part in Unified Sports, and some of these athletes can be found right here at Patriot High School in Nokesville. Special education teachers Patricia Weate and Brooke Bell originally introduced Unified Sports to the school in 2016. These basketball teams are made up of students with both nonintellectual issues and intellectual issues and they all play together. “We have three special-needs students on the floor along with two gen ed [general education] students, so there's five kids on the court at any one time,” says Weate. Ages range from 14 to 21 for special-needs students and 17 to 19 for juniors and seniors. This is Kathleen Kitchen’s first year coaching a Unified team. “It’s just so rewarding to work with these kids,” she says. “They're always excited to be here and they just want to be a part of something great. It's about more than

just sports; it’s about all kids feeling like they’re a part of the school community.” “It's all about feeling accepted,” Weate said. “A lot of my students don't see that they have any differences at all. It's not that they have a disability, it's just that they're different, and so they're still athletes. It just looks different than what we normally see. It's celebrating all of our school’s athletes across the entire spectrum.” With each game, Kitchen says it’s important to celebrate the small victories. “We might have a student who will probably never make a basket, but it’s like, oh my gosh, he hit the net with the ball!” “I'm very proud of her for trying her best,” says Beth Brooks, whose daughter Aly plays on the team. “Seeing her smile as she runs up and down the court and trying really hard to make shots brings a smile to my face because she’s so happy to be included.” Bethany Balsis, whose daughters Payton and Addison play on the team, agrees. “Watching my girls play makes me insanely proud! I can see how happy it makes them and that’s what’s most important.” While Kitchen teaches the kids how to play the game, there’s some things she says they learn on their own.

“We can’t teach compassion, so it's really neat to see our advanced juniors and seniors partnering with Tricia and her kids,” said Kitchen. “I've seen a lot of our kids come out of their shells and really become involved with the Unified group. They’re learning their names and giving them high fives and when they see them in the hallway, they’re building relationships. And that relationship building is bridging the gap.” “It's a win for our special-needs kids, but also for our gen ed kids,” said Weate. “A lot of them have been going to school with some of these students their entire lives and have never had any interactions with them. To see them in their final years of high school coming together, really working together and having a common goal has been very rewarding.” “It feels great,” says Jennifer Fleming, whose daughter Kendall has been playing basketball since she was old enough to dribble and shoot. “We always found ways to keep her involved and grow her love for the game. The Unified basketball team is a lot like that. Her typical peers are very supportive and encouraging during the game.” Kitchen believes other coaches should get involved and bring Unified Sports to their own schools. “You will never coach another team that is more fulfilling because it's not as much about winning. It's about people and relationships and just learning to enjoy and accept people who are different from us and make them aware that they're capable of doing more than they can imagine. Seeing them go out there and just thrive makes you feel like you can do anything and conquer anything.” Mandy and Darren Richards, parents of team member Nate, encourage other parents to have their children participate in a Unified team. “To expose these kids to something so positive and kind is something that kids crave; they thrive in that environment. Sometimes special-needs kids are forgotten about and this Unified team is so special for them.” “I'm very proud of the work that we've done and I'm proud of our special needs kids, but also our gen ed kids,” says Weate. “They've really showed up.” It’s also wonderful to see the support in the stands. “All the students home and away cheer, clap, and shout for each athlete, regardless of which team they are on,” says Brooks. “That truly brings me hope that my child will be included on the court and off.” “It gave us goosebumps to watch Nate play on a team and be given the opportunity to participate in basketball games,” said Mandy Richards. “Our heartfelt gratitude that Nate was given this opportunity; he hasn’t been given many chances like this.” Along with Patriot High School, some of the other schools in the area that have Unified Sports Teams are Brentsville High School, Gainesville High School, Forest Park High School, and Potomac High School. hg To find out more about Unified Sports Teams, go to www.specialolympics.org/our-work/sports/unified-sports

Marine Level Clean Protecting and serving in a whole new way: BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY PAUL LARA

U

nited States Marines are known for their discipline and high standards. Haymarket resident Brandon Rice, a Marine who was deployed three times, including once to Afghanistan, carried these attributes into the business world in July of 2021. Rice and his brother-in-law Nicholas (Niko) Spyros wanted to start a company that would stand above the rest, and with Marine Level Clean, they have met that challenge. The idea for the business was actually inspired by Spyros’s mother. “She would have cleaners come through our house and when they were done, Brandon would walk around and he would see dust and other things that were overlooked,” says Spyros. Rice knew he could do a much better job. “I joke with Niko all the time that Marines are called professional janitors because we know how to clean, and clean right, on a daily basis,” says Rice. When he asked Spyros if he would like to go into the cleaning business with him, Spyros jumped at the chance. Coming from a background of entrepreneurs - his family owns Transform Power Yoga in Haymarket - he wanted to follow in their footsteps. This was the perfect opportunity. Since Spyros lives with Rice and his sister Sarah, Rice’s wife, in Haymarket, they spend a lot of time together. “I've always been pretty close with my sister, so that's never been an issue, and Brandon and I have always gotten along. It's just worked out.”

Brandon Rice, left, and his brother-inlaw Nicholas Spyros, are co-owners of Marine Level Clean in Haymarket.

They feel they make a great team offering their customers a variety of services, and also feel it’s important to customize plans to fit each one’s individual needs. “Marine Level Clean offers regular cleanings, move in/ move out cleanings and deep cleans for both residential and commercial clients,” says Rice. “We do weekly, biweekly, and monthly cleanings and we also offer window cleanings. All of our services can be found right on our website.” Their professional-grade product lineup includes cleaners that meet the EPA's criteria for use against the Coronavirus and other germs to help protect their customers from coming into contact with them. At present, Rice and Spyros do most of the cleaning themselves. But with the company’s reputation growing, Rice’s wife Sarah comes in often to help.

cleaning products to also be eco-friendly, which are healthier for people and better for the environment. “They do the job, but if someone wants us to use harsher cleaners such as bleach and ammonia, we can do that too,” says Rice. When going into someone’s home or business, their main goal is to make the items they’re cleaning look almost new again. And they pay attention to things most cleaners either don’t address at all or quickly skim over. “We're really thorough and consistent,” says Spyros. “We hit baseboards on regular cleans - not just on deep cleans. When we're doing a last look, we'll check on stuff that many people don't really think to look at, and take care of them before wrapping up.” These would include the molding along walls, air vents and filters, the insides of door jambs and window seals. “Whenever we do our initial estimate, a lot of our customers’ biggest complaints is that their previous cleaners never touched baseboards,” says Rice. “That is something we do from the lowest clean to the highest clean.” Since it’s more important than ever to live and work in a clean environment, cleaning services are in high demand, and Marine Level Clean strictly adheres to CDC sanitization guidelines. Right now, Rice and Spyros do most of the cleaning themselves, although Sarah often comes in to help. But, with their stellar reputation growing, their customer base is building fast.

Most of their customers have been with them from day one, and many local businesses, including the Haymarket Baptist Preschool, use their services. “Marine Level Clean takes care of our preschool’s cleaning needs each day,” said the school’s director, Laurie Frasz. “They do a great job and accommodate our requests as needed. And they’re very easy to work with!” “A house is someone’s sanctuary, and homeowners need that level of trust when allowing people into their home, especially when they’re not there,” says Rice. The company is also insured, so if anything is broken, they’re able to easily replace it or pay for it. He adds, “We are very, very careful when we go into people's homes, but if we start to wipe something on a table and that table is shaky and falls, we have insurance. That gives people peace of mind.” They are also comfortable having dogs and cats in the house while they clean. “We are perfectly fine with that,” says Spyros. “We actually have three dogs living in the house with us. Brandon and Sarah have a pit bull named Potter and a Cane Corso named Zeus, and my dad has a pit bull named Sam.” Persephone the cat also shares their home. When not working, Rice loves riding his motorcycle, hiking with his wife, and spending time with his children - Konstantina, who’s almost 2 years old and Faith, who’s 12. Spyros likes hanging out with his girlfriend, playing video games and playing soccer with friends. But, when it’s time to go to work, they are ready to serve. hg For more information about Marine Level Clean, or to make an appointment, go to marinelvlclean.com.

Fast forward 13 years, and Jennifer is not only a fulltime teacher in Prince William County, but she also tutors children through her tutoring business, Mills Virtual Tutoring in Gainesville. “I've been doing this for a long time and love it! I have taught all grades from middle school through Pre-Calculus...and the list goes on,” Mills said. Her teaching journey began in South Florida, where she taught middle school with classes of anywhere from 30 to 45 students of all learning levels. “I was put through the best boot camp ever for my first three years of teaching,” Mills said. “I attribute a lot of that to making me the teacher I am today and being able to evaluate what each student needs. I wanted to tutor, but I didn’t know how to get into it. This was the early 2000s, so the internet wasn’t what it is today.” During her time in Florida, Mills married a police officer who ended up getting a job with the government that

meant a move to Northern Virginia. “I got a job at West Potomac High School and they gave me the opportunity to put my name out there as a potential tutor and I got my first client. By the next year, I was working with 25 kids weekly on top of teaching. My husband was traveling a lot for his job so I wanted to fill my time with teaching.” After having two little girls, Addison and Lilly, the Mills family moved to Gainesville, which left Jennifer an hour away from the students she was tutoring. “I loved my tutoring kids, my students loved our sessions, and the parents were extremely pleased with their child's progress. I did not want to give it up, nor did the students or their parents.” And just like that, Mills Virtual Tutoring was born. “Some of the parents were skeptical that virtual tutoring would work, and I wanted to prove to them that it does. I would hire people who could teach the subjects I didn’t teach and that’s where this business really started to blossom.” After a few years, Jennifer had between 5 and 10 tutors working with her at one time, and then in March 2020 the pandemic hit. Staying true to her passion, Jennifer knew that she could help so many students when everyone was at home. “I was already set up with everything and the schools didn’t know what to do,” Mills said. “I ran ads on Facebook and tutored for free. I was running 75 classes that I scheduled with my tutors, everything from Kindergarten to SAT prep. We were online from 8am to 8pm. We had to figure out all of the kinks because we had between 30 and 40 students in the classes. I was essentially running my own school because the kids weren’t in school.” Now, Mills Virtual Tutoring has over 50 tutors working and hundreds of kids getting the support they need. “A lot of the teachers are previous colleagues or net-

work recommendations. I don’t advertise for tutors, but people come to me because they believe in our mission,” Jennifer said. “Whenever a parent calls to inquire, I tell them the business plan isn’t anything other than helping the kids in ways the schools can’t. This is specifically geared to the holes and issues that I’m seeing daily in the school system and correcting those for the students. You have motivated, engaged kids, and then the kids that think they’re not good at math. They just have to be more confident and believe that they can do it.” Mills Virtual Tutoring offers a wide range of tutoring services — One-on-One Tutoring, Academic Coaching, IEP Academic and Goal Support, and even Summer Enrichment. “I do every single course from Kindergarten through college,” Mills said. “I try to keep it different from a regular tutoring experience. The teachers use the digital tools very well. They know their curriculum inside and out and can see the bigger picture of how much this is helping the kids. I just really want to help and I know tutoring is the way to do it. I plan to do this until I’ve helped every last kid who wants my help.” hg For more information on Mills Virtual Tutoring, you can visit their website at www.millsvirtualtutoring.com or visit their Facebook page, Mills Virtual Tutoring.

Great Beer with an Environmental Mission Old Bust Head Brewing Company implements carbon capture technology

B

eer lovers and environmental conservationists in Fauquier County and the surrounding areas appreciate Old Bust Head Brewing Company’s libations and sustainable mission. The solar-powered, geothermal microbrewery in Vint Hill sports forty eight taps that serve up a variety of ales and lagers from pilsners to porters and beyond, and offer additional beverages such as hard seltzers and hard sodas. Old Bust Head Brewing is among the first craft breweries in the country and the first brewery in Virginia to implement carbon capture technology. This technology allows brewers to capture waste carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during fermentation and reuse it in other stages of the brewing process where CO2 is required. This new technology helps craft brewers to keep CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere while creating independence from outside supply chains. “Old Bust Head is motivated by a desire to make life both rich and sustainable. Recaptured CO2 is not only better for the planet, it makes better beer, so that’s a winwin,” says Old Bust Head co-owner Julie Broaddus. “CO2 is a major cost of production—in the ballpark of electric, water and sewer, and natural gas. This investment will reduce or eliminate our need to purchase outside CO2, but most importantly, like our solar array and geothermal system, it takes advantage of an opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint.” The scientific community has modeled the need for the global businesses to capture, reuse, store or convert billions of metric tons of CO2 to mitigate climate change. Carbon capture has long been reserved for large-scale brewers with millions of dollars to spare. Earthly Labs has miniaturized the technology to make it affordable and achievable for small businesses. This plug-and-play unit, called CiCi®, will enable Old Bust Head to capture more than 1,500 trees worth of waste CO2 from the brewing process each year.

“Old Bust Head offers an example of how small businesses can tackle the climate change challenge with practical solutions that deliver a compelling payback,” says Earthly Labs CEO Amy George. “We are inspired by all the ways Old Bust Head is meeting their commitment to their community and the environment, making great beer, creating jobs, using both solar and geothermal, and now recycling CO2. It is great to see a Virginia brewery among sustainability leaders in the country.” w

California’s LUMEN Essence BY MARK LUNA

M

y wine life took its turn for the real a little over 20 years ago, while living in Los Angeles, California. Up to that point and time in my life and travels, I had always appreciated and enjoyed wine…I just hadn’t fallen in love yet. Santa Barbara County changed that, and me, forever. Occasional drives a couple of scenic hours up the 101 Freeway to the SB wine country turned into frequent getaways to the Zaca Mesa Wine Trail, with regular stops and subsequent wine club memberships at Firestone, Curtis, Fess Parker (twice) and Zaca Mesa wineries. It was here, in the gorgeous surroundings of the Santa Ynez Valley and the mighty little township of Los Olivos, that I discovered the inimitable wines of Lane Tanner. A decade prior to launching her own eponymous label, Lane Tanner was fine-tuning her already immeasurable wine talents, first serving as oenologist at Firestone Vineyards and later landing winemaking gigs at both Hitching Post and Zaca Mesa. These efforts led her to become the first independent female winemaker in Santa Barbara County, as well as the first to dedicate her entire winery to Pinot Noir. As noted in her bio (available at Lumen.com), “Lane has always had a reputation for being the first to call a pick in the vineyard. Even during the 1990’s and 2000’s, at a time when most of her peers were chasing Parker scores and pushing harvest times ever later, Lane held fast to her winemaking philosophy – scores be damned. Her wines were always more old-world in style, and built for aging gracefully.” As one who consumed many LT bottles in the early 2000’s, I can attest that her wines were indeed produced in both the desire for and honor of an old-world sensibility, where timing things perfectly during harvest determines the timelessness of the end result. And from 1989 until her retirement in 2009, she faithfully followed her pursuit of low-alcohol, low-sulfite wines, richly complex and cel-

lar-aging worthy, in turn producing some of the finest wines to come out of Southern California.

Enter Will Henry

For 30 years, The Henry Wine Group was one of the most respected wine importers/distributors in California. Started by Warner Henry in 1985, it became a force in the fine wine wholesale world and it was here that Warner’s son, Will, cut his wine business teeth. Having worked at Leeuwin Estate Winery in Australia, in addition to becoming a widely-published journalist and photographer, Will utilized his business acumen, passion for wine and SoCal roots to entice Lane out of retirement; and together in 2013, they started Lumen Wines. As the name implies the measure of light form a single source, there isn’t a more appropriate name than this; since their new partnership, Tanner and Henry, along with D.C. native and assistant winemaker Justin Trabue, have been shining as bright as ever, with Lane once again producing outstanding cool-climate wines and Will using his formidable talents to get them out into the world. I recently had the good fortune to experience two Lumen wines and I invite you to experience them as well… Lumen Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2020 hails from Rancho Real Vineyard (100%) in the Santa Maria AVA of Santa Barbara County. It is SIP Certified sustainably farmed and of course, is 100% chardonnay. Technically speaking, it is fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 6 months in 18% new and 82% neutral French oak barrels. It also undergoes 100% Malolactic Fermentation…these details matter because they have a direct impact on how the wine tastes. And let me tell you, its taste is something very special. On the nose, Lumen Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2020 quickly introduces you to scents of pear, honeydew melon and white

flowers, with a backdrop of salinity and wet stone. These accentuations easily transfer throughout the palate, with added hints of tangerine and custardy lemon. Despite the malolactic influence, there’s great acidity to this wine and the finish is very even. It can be paired with a variety of springtime foods or enjoyed in a glass all unto itself. Only 230 cases were produced and at $30, it’s a very worthy purchase, especially for a single-vineyard wine. Of course, no Lane Tanner wine line-up, no matter the label, would be complete without pinot noir…there are very few winemakers who make a better PN than she does, and her Lumen Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley/Santa Barbara County 2017 is proof in a bottle. Always on course, Tanner has once again produced a low alcohol (12.9%) pinot noir wine of great range and depth, strictly adhering to the principles of her earlier work. With a barrel regimen of 6% new and 94% neutral French/ & Hungarian oak, Lumen Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley/Santa Barbara County 2017 is an unfined and loosely filtered wine, with no stem inclusion, essentially guaranteeing a purity of fruit and soil. It’s sourced from the vineyards of Sierra Madre and Garey, two of the finest sites in SoCal. As I couldn’t disagree with any of it, I’ll defer to Lumen’s tasting notes below to offer you its appraisal: “Wonderfully vibrant and energetic, with penetrating cranberry and sage on the nose, followed by undulating flavors of dried

strawberry, wild thyme and sandalwood on the palate – all wrapped in a firm yet velvety texture. Long, vibrant finish with lingering fruit and minerality, accented by cardamom, white pepper and anise notes.” It’s suggested that any wild game, salmon or bird dish will be greatly complemented by this wine. The winery produced 750 cases and it’s priced around $40; a sweet spot for great pinot noir. And of course, The Wine Enthusiast gave this wine an Editor’s Choice 93 points; a wonderful bit of irony, as Lane couldn’t care less than she did 30 years ago. So, give our local wine shop a call and get them to get you these wines…you’ll be glad you did. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! hg Mark Luna is a Portfolio Rep for Roanoke Valley Wine Company. APRIL 2022

The shopping center, home to the Regal Manassas and IMAX movie theater, is across from the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Parkridge Center in Manassas may be redeveloped Regal theater could be out, residential units in For the first time in 23 years, residents in western Prince William County will soon have to travel a little farther to catch the latest blockbuster movie on the big screen. Bethesda, Md.based Parkridge Center Retail LLC wants to redevelop the shopping center to construct more than 300 housing units. Under the LLC, Buchanan Partners and Willard Retail partnered to purchase the 312,227-square-foot shopping center for $22.5 million in April 2021. The company wants to rezone 44.3 acres across two parcels from business zoning to planned mixed-use and planned mixed residential. The company plans to construct 363 housing units, including 190 townhouses and 173 condominiums. A portion of the shopping center is planned to remain, but the application doesn’t specify which. While the plans still need work, Buchanan Partners Principal Russ Gestl said the initial vision is to develop between 140 and 200 units on the west side of the property. Eventually, the east side of the property will likely be redeveloped, but the company wants to first see the impact of the residential units on businesses on the east end. He also said the company is in discussions with Omniride to provide bus service to the property. “Retailers like to have people in the mix, and people like to have retail in the mix,” Gestl said. The application was submitted Dec. 20 and is still under review by county staff.
