We are an ice cream shop that sells delicious Gifford's Ice Cream as well as homemade cookies and cinnamon rolls.

We recently purchased this business that is now merging with Ghosted Concepts, our other business that sells sandwiches, chicken (and more – specifically Nashville Hot Chicken, and BBQ). We love to host private events as well as cater!

Yes, we were! We know that there are other great ice cream shops out there so we're excited to be chosen the best! Cookies & Cream has won twice before and Ghosted Concepts won last year for Best All Around Restaurant.

The friendly family feel of our shop and staff and, of course, because of the delicious ice cream!

Cookies & Cream has been in Prince William County since 2016, and we as Ghosted Concepts have been here for almost two years. We have loved running a business in Haymarket; the entire community has been so supportive and best of all they tell all of their friends about us!

We just recently took over as owners and operators of Cookies & Cream. We are so excited that we get to offer our community great food, great ice cream, and even better service all in one location! We

already have a couple of fundraisers lined up for some local organizations and we plan to do more. We love partnering with other local businesses and organizations.

We are a family restaurant, not only do we enjoy serving families but if you ask around, you’ll find out that most of the staff are actually family too! So, we hope that our unity is reflected in how we serve everyone that walks in. We like to believe that we create a home away from home atmosphere.

Yes! We were very surprised at winning “Best Of,” especially in two categories!

We are a small spot compared to other restaurants in the area, so it is such an honor to be recognized. Gratefully, this is our 4th year in a row winning “Best Mexican and Latin Food Restaurant” and first time winning “Best Business Lunch Restaurant.”

This area is like a small town in a busy metropolitan area. Everyone knows everyone when they come in. We’ve been around the area for 18 years, long enough to see children grow into adults and parents become grandparents. It’s been a blessing to serve such a tight knit community.

Due to the increased need for mental health services due to COVID-19, Clarity is committed to bridging the gaps in treatment within Prince William County. We will continue to offer individual, family, and group therapies along with a bi-weekly free parent support group. In 2022, Clarity went to local high schools in PWCS to train staff and students and will continue to pour into the community as a resource. In the last two years, Clarity

We also offer a large outside play area on our amazing outdoor porch. The pups have a field day out there playing and running around. We have a full apartment on site, and one of our staff members lives there full-time, so the pups are never alone if they are boarding with us overnight.

Where do you start?

Hire a coach: It’s the best thing you’ll ever do. Why? Because you need accountability, programming, instruction, and feedback. Start slow

When starting a strength training program, most people overestimate their capabilities and movement patterns and get sore and don’t feel like returning to the gym. You must start slow and with low volumes of exercises and loads.

Be consistent

I recommend starting with two full body strength workouts per week. Research says it takes 45 days to get hooked on a positive habit. Consistency will be key to not only learning the lifts but developing the habit and making progress.

A

few weeks ago, one of my clients who is over 50 came to me bragging about his golf game. He had recently returned from a trip in which he played three 3-day tournaments in 10 days. He wasn’t bragging about his golf, rather his ability to bounce back day after day without soreness, playing better and better golf each day, and enjoying himself.

He credited his strength training for his increase in striking distance and stamina. Which leads me to the point of this writing.

In order to maximize your time in the gym, work with your coach to pair exercises that utilize different muscle groups. This keeps your workout moving and helps with recovery. Remember to aim for two full body strength workouts per week, and start with very light loads. Of course, before starting any exercise regimen, consult with your physician and get the “all clear.”

He’s Got the “Write” Stuff: Meet Dhruv Amitabh

A

ll you need to do is have one conversation with Dhruv Amitabh of Haymarket and it’s clear that he is wise beyond his years. At just 11 years old, he is already a published author. His other talents and interests include Tae Kwon Do — he earned his black belt at age 7— baseball, playing the guitar, horseback riding, and more.

His number one passion, though, is writing.

“He comes up with and writes the stories by himself,” his mom, Shaili says. “We just read the final product.”

Dhruv, who is a sixth grader at Linton Hall School, submitted his story The First Grade Field Trip to the iWRITE writing contest last year and was selected as one of the winning entries to be published in the 2021 ‘iWRITE Short Stories by Kids for Kids Publishing Contest’s Anthology Vol. 12′. As one of the winners, Dhruv was invited to attend iWRITE’s Big Book Signing Celebration at the Hyatt Regency in Houston, Texas.

Traveling to Houston and being part of the book signing was a big motivator to keep writing for Dhruv. He was inspired by the other authors he was able to meet during the duration of the trip. iWRITE’s mission is to build student confidence through writing. They believe that through writing students become more creative and confident, which opens the door to opportunities they never had before.

When he’s not working on writing for school, he’s writing short stories on his own or with friends. He co-authored another story The One Who Started It All with five other students that was published last year.

“My language arts teacher gives me extra writing assignments,” Dhruv said. “We were studying China and I

had to write a Chinese legend. I wrote a story about two brothers that had a sibling rivalry. I had to do research to find out who the first king of China was to give the story context.”

Dhruv gets some inspiration from having a love of the Magic Treehouse book series. “He loves reading,” mom Shaili said. “He loves the fantasy, the mythology and the history components. He always loves integrating humor into his stories, as well.”

His latest story is part of a series called The Wild Adventures of Christopher Brown. The story tells the tale of 16-year-old Christopher Brown who lives in a neighborhood called El Puerto in Texas. He is a fan of western movies and loves the Wild West.

“The town he lives in used to be the Wild West, but now it’s a modern town,” Dhruv said. “One day, the Wild West rises from the ground and Christopher Brown is transported back in time where he meets his grandpa. I’m doing research to incorporate it into the story, also.”

When he’s not writing, he has many other hobbies, but he loves baseball. Dhruv has been on his baseball team since 2017.

“I like baseball because the team is always there to support you,” Dhruv said. “They used to call me the Miracle Hitter because I would always get a hit at the last second.” He started baseball with the Brentsville League, but now is part of the Gainesville Haymarket

Baseball League.

“He enjoys hitting and has a good supportive team,” mom Shaili said. “He needs team encouragement. He’s always motivated to perform when he has encouragement from his teammates.” hg

side from [being] friends, we’re very different people, which makes it work well,” Axe Addicts Co-Founder Sean Love said. The mobile axe throwing company out of Gainesville has been around for a year, a passion project of a group of friends with very different expertise.

To understand what brings these guys together, we must return to early 2021. Around that time, Chris took his family to a local axe throwing venue. He enjoyed it and suggested the activity to the guys. He also wanted to join an axe throwing league, so they all tried it out and immediately slipped into a league–where their now-Operations Lead Tyler Roby was their coach.

Tyler wound up as a coach after a DC bar he applied to around 2018 asked if he was interested in managing their axe throwing venue.

“I didn’t even know that was a thing at the time,” Tyler said. “I got a chance to check it out and here we are today.”

They all know that axe throwing has been on the scene for years, but it became mainstream within the last decade.

Beginnings of a business

“We started building the business and realized pretty quickly we had no idea what we were doing… [and] that if we’re responsible for our money [then] we’re going to go broke quickly,” Sean chuckled. So they brought in Chris and Dan as the economics and engineering experts, respectively.

When hunting down insurance for a mobile axe throwing company, Chris said, “We worked with some of the lead national insurers to develop new programs.” Instead of omitting insurance or paying insane premiums, they established a reasonable mobile axe throwing rate with those companies.

They navigated permits, rules and regulations, and registration.

“We had no idea if this was going to be successful, we just wanted to do it. We figured worst case, we have a trailer we can practice throwing in on the weekends,” Sean said.

“We wanted to make sure that we did two things when we started this business: make it accessible and fun.

Our approach is to make sure that we’re spending the right amount of time with people to show them how to do things,” Sean explained. He wanted people to enjoy

was a complete obsession,” Sean said.

As they became friends with Tyler, they asked him if he considered branching out on his own. They talked about how it was expensive to do things as a family, and how there weren’t local mobile axe throwing businesses to bring the sport to social venues or events. The guys realized the difficulties–in affordably providing the activity for families and hurdles with insurance–but they each had solutions to offer… so Tyler bought a trailer.

Dan pointed out “the amount of visceral fun it is to throw something with a lot of heft to it and see it stick into a target,” saying, “There’s an element of stress relief there and I know that we all can use that.”

They launched at the Haymarket Day Parade in October 2021 and have been busy about every weekend since.

who we haven’t been able to get to stick the board,” Sean stated–“Knock on wood,” Tyler interjected. They’ve had a myriad of people enter their trailer–kids, couples in their 70s.

“Anybody can throw an axe as long as someone shows you how to do it the right way,” Sean said.

They’ve brought axe throwing to bridal showers and had just been to an event with teachers when I caught up with them.

“We’ve been asked if we do funerals too,” Tyler said. Chris added, “We can do team-building events for corporate activities. We do birthday [and] retirement party activities.”

They have breweries where they regularly bring the fun, like Tin Cannon and Old Bust Head. Sean clarified that the venues have to have “good beer and good people” because they run the business in their free time outside of their full-time jobs.

Where it goes from here

They want to grow–their reach, opportunities, and availability. They imagine expanding to Winchester, establishing a brick-and-mortar shop, increasing their charity, and building more trailers. Crossroads-Connection fights food insecurity in Gainesville and Haymarket

M

any people would be shocked and saddened to know how many of our local children go hungry on the weekends. The crisis of food insecurity has been compounded by the devastating losses of jobs and lives during the pandemic and the increasingly high cost of food.

“We live in an affluent community,” says Jill Zimmerman, a core volunteer with Crossroads-Connection in Haymarket.

“Many people are surprised to realize that hunger impacts children who sit beside their own in the classroom.”

Crossroads-Connection, a Christian community service organization that provides weekend food for students in the Gainesville and Haymarket area, has been battling childhood hunger since 2011. Founded by Joan and David Gifford, it’s now a chartered club of Heritage Hunt community in Gainesville and a ministry of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Haymarket. Jim Allmon, a Heritage Hunt resident and member of the church, is the liaison between the organization and the schools.

“During the week, children are getting meals through a meals program at school, but over the weekend, they are struggling with hunger,” he says.

With this need growing, Crossroads-Connection has implemented a new campaign in order to serve more children. Champions for Crossroad Kids, started in July, will allow individuals and businesses to sponsor a child or multiple children.

“We want to increase our budget from $30,000 to $50,000 for the 2022-2023 school year so we can increase our reach from about 120 children to 200 children and maybe even go into a few more schools in the Haymarket/Gainesville area,” says Allmon.

Adds Zimmerman, “Each summer, we evaluate our funds and determine how many students we can support in the coming school year. While our goal is to never say

no to the request to support a child, we know that the need always outweighs our funds.”

Barbara Goldman, another Heritage Hunt resident, is the outreach director for the new campaign. “These are our children, this is our community, and we can make a difference,” she says. “We can build within our own community to strengthen it. The program also helps teachers because children can learn better and are more alert if they have the proper food.”

She says it’s critical for individuals, families, and businesses to come together to help. “My focus is on local businesses. We may not even know about each other, so we want to talk to them, tell them about ourselves and learn about them.”

Goldman feels this a perfect time to implement partnerships with these businesses. “Now that we're emerging or hopefully emerging [from COVID], it’s how we can make them feel good and get them involved. That's the key - to get them involved in charity in Gainesville.”

Adds Allmon, “It's the first time we've ever really gone out into the community with a program like this. We're having a group of volunteers approach local businesses and organizations, and churches are putting inserts into their bulletins.”

There are three levels of participation - Gold, at $1,250, which will sponsor five children for a year; Silver, at $750,

which will sponsor three children for a year; and Bronze, which will sponsor one child for $250 for a year.

Sponsors will receive certificates they can display, and Crossroads-Connection will put out a list of them with their corresponding donation levels on its Facebook page, website and in the Bull Run Observer. If donors want to remain anonymous, that’s fine too. There will also be a cookout at their facility in Haymarket to recognize the people and businesses who gave so generously.

Everyone involved in Crossroads-Connection is a volunteer. There are nine core members, some of whom shop for and organize the food, plus additional volunteers who help pack the bought and donated food into bags at its Haymarket facility. Once this is done, the bags are delivered to the schools to be distributed to children on Fridays.

Other core team volunteer members include Linda Zembower, who helps with packing food and delivery, and Andy Zembower, who assists with strategic planning and financial matters. They became involved through their church. “We find it very rewarding knowing that we’re helping young children in the community develop to their full potential,” says Linda.

Adds Tracie Schortemeyer, another core team member who is involved with organizational leadership, “With our primary goal being to alleviate hunger as a barrier to learning for our local school children, knowing our group is helping to fulfill this need is what keeps me motivated.”

Crossroads-Connections is always in need of food donations of nonperishable food items like macaroni and cheese, granola bars, oatmeal, applesauce cups, and fruit cups. Individual packets of breakfast cereal are also important, along with the kids’ favorite, Goldfish snack packs.

“I think the simplest message is that we are in a battle against food insecurity and by helping to feed our children, we’re building a much stronger community,” says Goldman.

The Zembowers stress that sponsoring children really makes a difference. “The children who receive the weekend food bags are always excited when they see the bags in their backpacks,” says Andy.

While this campaign will go on for two months, Crossroad-Connections is in need of donations all year long.

Monetary donations can be made online or by checks mailed to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church with Champions for Crossroads Kids in the memo line. People and groups are also needed to volunteer.

Making Up for Lost Time: Improving Kids’ Lives Post COVID

he Children’s Therapy Center (CTC) is not here to advocate limits–the company stretches across the Northeast coast, serves kids from birth to 21 years old, and helps with anything from picky eating to ADHD. The Gainesville center offers physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy, and is here to tackle what our children are dealing with as they emerge from the throes of COVID 19.

Pandemic pains Occupational Therapist and Manager of CTC Gainesville Alyssa Diprofio noted that executive function and social skills got hit hard enough that they are only now seeing kids return to pre-COVID routines in those areas. Without the usual structure in place of interaction in public learning spaces, “it’s like they forgot everything in the last year because it’s been turned upside down,” Diprofio said.

CTC responds by giving kids grounding techniques, coping strategies, and methods to help them “regulate their body to be able to function, get through their day, and enjoy their day,” Alyssa said. She emphasized that their focus is on “working with some cognitive flexibility to be okay with things going differently… as well as some of the anxiety around the unknown.”

Watkin noted how they personalize their approach to each child and their circumstances.

“It’s important to show them progress, so maybe we’ll break a goal down into smaller steps,” she said.

“It’s a combination of developing these coping strategies [and] involving parents…

As the kids become better with using these coping strategies, the hope is for them to identify their emotions independently,” Diprofio said.

A passion for education

The community’s role in reinforcing positive behaviors for the children is essential.

CTC will teach that child’s community about offering adult-selected choices (start your day by brushing your teeth or getting dressed–you choose). They also show kids zones of regulation with colors to reflect stimulation–such as blue for low arousal or

They want to encourage consistency in the support of each child.

“We try to get information out there so people are in a better place to help their kids and identify if their kids are struggling,” Laurie said.

They’re passionate about organizing educational services, doing school assemblies, and arranging parent support groups.

They’ve also ramped up teletherapy, held Facebook lives, hosted webinars, created newsletters, and made resources virtual wherever possible.

Accessible solutions

Whether COVID-related or not, it’s difficult to find time for all the things we benefit from. Marriott acknowledged that parents are busy, and insurance might prove an obstacle to getting therapy. That’s why CTC has flexible evening and weekend hours and works with insurance for proper coverage.

Watkin added that it can be overwhelming to realize your child has a challenge that they could use help with. They also know that the bigger task of meeting a child’s distinct needs is built on the small breaks along the way. For helping in the home, CTC has diverse activity videos (mommy and me yoga!) that give kids and parents a break when they need something new.

Alyssa has a toddler–a “COVID baby”–who couldn’t socialize because of the pandemic and benefits from some of the same things that CTC offers (one favorite is the yoga classes). The issues and solutions that CTC deals with are not far removed from team members’ lives.

No matter where someone is in the process of identifying and meeting their child’s needs, Watkin said, “If a child is struggling, even if you’re not sure they’re struggling, have them evaluated so we can determine if they would benefit from services–the earlier the better.” Diprofio chimed in, “it can’t hurt anything.”

Pinning Down Dreams A wrestling club for those who want to excel in the sport and in life

W

hen Jamie Carayiannis moved to Gainesville in 1993 and his children started attending Tyler Elementary School, he realized there was a need for more sports programs. As a high school and college athlete and former football, wrestling, and track coach, this was something he decided he could fix.

“I began coaching a softball program, and afterwards started a travel program called the Virginia Cannons for my daughter, Thia, and her friends and other kids who wanted to join,” he says. “I then started a wrestling program for young children called the Haymarket Hurricanes.”

At first, he jokes, it was just him and his two kids, Jack and John, but once the word got out, over 50 kids signed up in a short period of time. The following year, he had 75 kids.

“Overnight, it became one of the biggest programs in the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation.”

It was here he met Bryan Burns.

“When we moved to Haymarket, I had a young son, Jackson, who was in the second grade at the time,” says Bryan. A high school and college athlete, an All-American wrestling champ, and a university assistant coach, Jaime would soon recruit him as a coach for the Hurricanes.

After a few years, the two handed off the program to another coach when their kids grew out of the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (which is a beginner program).

“We were looking for something beyond that because our kids had developed to a point where they were ready for a higher level of competition,” says Bryan.

“As a high school coach, I would try to get as many

kids playing as possible, and the downside with many of the local programs was that they didn't have that concept,” says Jamie. “A wrestling program may have 13 starting positions, but you might have 90 kids on your team.”

He also believed that it takes certain kids time to bloom.

“If you stick with a kid and watch them grow, watch them mature, and then watch them get better, four years later you might be looking at a kid who’s a state champion.”

He merged his two philosophies and founded Virginia Patriots Wrestling Club in 2010 to train middle-school aged kids.

In order to give all the kids an opportunity to wrestle, they started traveling out of state to various tournaments. They often went to Pennsylvania because they had open tournaments, and also to New Jersey and occasionally Maryland.

“We were on the road every weekend, and by doing that, each kid was able to participate,” says Jamie. “Our goal with the club is getting them to continue to wrestle every year and then go on to wrestle in high school and beyond.”

Bryan, he says, was an integral part of the decision to travel since he grew up in Pennsylvania, and went through its wrestling system.

Brentsville District High School in Nokesville,” says Jamie. “They've got an excellent support staff for wrestling and they're very supportive of our program.”

Brett Stein, a high school coach with Brentsville and someone who has many wrestling awards under his belt, is also a coach with the Virginia Patriots Wrestling Club.

The Club is open to middle school aged kids who are really interested in wrestling and want to commit to excelling in the sport. The travel schedule is grueling and the tournaments competitive.

“No one can make a child love the sport,” says Bryan.

“He has to decide that for himself.”

Jessica Sanati’s 14 year old son, Evan, is currently part of the Virginia Patriots.

“Coach Burns has been unbelievably instrumental in Evan’s development,” says the Haymarket mom. “I think a lot of it has to do with Evan absorbing every single thing that Bryan says whether it’s about wrestling or about life.”

Evan’s been wrestling since 2017, and his mom says he lives and breathes it and plans to continue wrestling in high school and college. He even has goals for the Olympics, and definitely plans to open his own wrestling facility one day.

Many of the kids involved in the program have won championships and been place winners. Others have gone on to excel in high school and college. Jamie’s son, John, is one of these kids. He started wrestling with the Hurricanes when he was 5, and continued with the Virginia Patriots as a middle schooler.

“Virginia Patriots really helped me prepare for the Brentsville High School team,” says John. “I was wrestling some of the toughest middle schoolers in the country.”

John went on to win many tournaments over the years and now, while attending Belmont Abbey College, just attained all American status at the NCAA AA D2 Nationals that took place in St. Louis in March.

What he loves most about wrestling is how much it prepares players for life.

Coming down the rail: more places to travel by train

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and Norfolk Southern Corp. on June 30 announced the financial closing of the Western Rail Initiative Agreement, which will permit expanded passenger rail service from Washington to Roanoke and to the New River Valley.

The first step in the expansion is the addition of a second round-trip Amtrak train between Roanoke and the District of Columbia, subsidized by the state government, which started July 11 and will give residents another option instead of driving roughly 250 miles each way.

The new Washington-to-Roanoke round trip will make stops at Alexandria, Manassas, Culpeper, Charlottesville and Lynchburg. The agreement also calls for a potential future station at Bedford.

The new service is expected to add approximately 80,000 passengers in the first year once it is extended into the New River Valley.

Those taking the roughly 5-hour trip from Roanoke to Washington’s Union Station can then stay on the train and connect up Amtrak’s Northeast corridor as far as Boston.

The agreement also includes the future extension of the Roanoke service to the New River Valley with the construction of a new station as well as track and signal improvements.

“Communities along the Interstate 81 and Route 29 corridors will now have more passenger rail options when traveling to and from our nation’s capital and beyond, and the improvements will also increase our economic opportunities by enhancing freight-rail service,” said D.J. Stadtler, executive director of Virginia Passenger Rail Authority.

Dual Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins opens in Woodbridge

Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins celebrated the grand opening of its first "next generation" combo restaurant in Woodbridge at 13585 Minnieville Road with giveaways of free coffee and free scoops for a year to the store’s first 100 guests.

Dunkin’ franchisees and Woodbridge-natives Jerome Johnson Sr. and Jerome Johnson Jr. hosted the store’s official ribbon cutting on June 28. Following the ribbon cutting, Johnson, in partnership with the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation, presented a $2,000 check for the Hylton Boys and Girls Club. Children from these programs were on-site to accept the donation.

The store's "next gen" design includes a front-facing bakery case, a dedicated mobile order pickup area, premium beverage pours and a green design for energy efficiency.

The 2,200 square-foot restaurant will ultimately employ approximately 26 crew members and is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The new restaurant also features plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and will offer complimentary wi-fi for customers.

Franchisee Jerome Johnson currently owns and operates 11 Dunkin’ locations throughout Virginia.

Virginia’s leisure/hospitality jobs are making a comeback after COVID. More than half the 125,000 net jobs gained in Virginia over the past year have come in the leisure/hospitality sector, which was hardest hit by COVID and the resulting government-mandated economic shutdowns.

Leisure/hospitality gained 64,000 jobs from May 2021 to May 2022 to stand at 405,300, according to figures reported by the Virginia Employment Commission.

The jobs comeback in the sector represented a boost of 18.8 percent, nearly six times the 3.4-percent overall increase in jobs over the past year.

In May, Virginia’s non-farm employment was estimated at 4,044,400, up 125,000 (3.2%) from a year before. There were 110,300 additional private-sector jobs (up 3.2%) and 14,700 more public-sector positions (up 2%).

Northern Virginia accounted for 43,500 of the 125,000 additional statewide jobs, rising 2.9 percent to 1.52 million. Across Virginia metro areas, the increase in yearover-year jobs ranged from 1.6 percent in Virginia Beach to 6.3 percent in Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford.
