This is our biggest and most eagerly anticipated issue of the year. And this year, 5,942 people cast 41,220 votes for the businesses, events, and individuals they believe are the best. Thank you.

We added some new categories this year, including Best Place to Work, Best Customer Service, and Best Teacher. A Pup’s Valley, Miss Kibbles, and Kelly Zalaskus, respectively, swept each of those. I can’t tell how much fun it was to watch the votes tick up every day. I’d get my morning coffee, log in, and stare in astonishment at the number of votes coming in for A Pup’s Valley as the best place to work. I thought, “Wow, that place must have great management.” And then it dawned on me.

If you work there, you get to play with puppies all day. Yes, I’ve submitted an application.

In all seriousness, thank you again for voting and congratulations to all of this year’s winners. Thank you also to our advertisers and to our terrific sales team. You work tirelessly to make each issue a success and with this one, you’ve done it again.

And now, onto the bests of 2023!

THE BEST OF HAYMARKET / GAINESVILLE 2023
PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
8 Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle AUGUST 2023

Kelly Zalaskus

8th Grade, Science, Bull Run Middle School, Gainesville

Please tell us what you enjoy about teaching science and what you enjoy about teaching in general.

Every day is something new when you are a teacher! Teaching is so much more than providing content. It is about making connections with your students and finding ways to make complex ideas relatable and interesting. Many of the physics and chemistry topics I teach are best learned through hands-on manipulatives and investigation, and I love providing those opportunities for students in my classroom. Above all, it has been my utmost pleasure to bring my passion for the sciences and our natural environment to my students, in hopes that one day they too will prove good environmental stewards or even pursue STEM related fields to enact positive change.

Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win?

I was surprised to even be nominated! I work with many incredibly talented educators at Bull Run Middle School that would be equally deserving of such recognition.

What do you think is the reason our readers voted you Best Teacher? (Did you promise their kids all “A”s? It’s ok, you can tell us!)

I cannot say for certain why I was voted the "Best Teacher", because I believe there are so many educators just like me, who invest in building relationships with their students to drive student engagement and academic success. Are you from this area originally? What do you like about living here?

I am a product of Prince William County Public Schools, graduated from Brentsville District High School. When I grew up around here, everything from Gainesville to Nokesville was wooded or for farm-use. While it has been bittersweet to see the area change and become more populated, I really appreciate the additional opportunities for commerce and not having to drive

into Manassas just for groceries or to shop anymore. There is so much to do and see here, now!

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you?

I never grew up thinking I would become a teacher, let alone a middle school educator! I earned dual science degrees from my undergraduate program in hopes of becoming a marine biologist. While earning my master's degree in biology, I performed various studies on loggerhead sea turtle swimming biomechanics and was lucky to spend time doing biodiversity surveys and tagging sea turtles off the Atlantic Coast. Beginning my career in field research and data collection has helped me connect what I teach in my classroom with real world applications for my students.

Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?

At my school, I coach the junior varsity girls' basketball team and sponsor the tennis club in the spring. I am a strong proponent of mental health awareness in athletes. As such, I have supported causes such as Morgan's Message, and have been involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness community walk.

Legacy Ridge Living

16001 Loves Mill Lane, Gainesville, VA 20155

Main: (703) 468-7000

https:legacyridgeliving.com

Please tell us about Legacy Ridge. What products or services does it provide?

Legacy Ridge is an Assisted Living Community dedicated to caring for those with dementia and cognitive impairment in a secured environment. This means that all of our residents have some diagnosis of dementia. This allows us to really specialize in providing tailored care to those with cognitive impairment. Our community features two neighborhoods, with one dedicated to women only. We have a dedicated and compassionate team of caregivers and nurses on site, around the clock, providing the highest quality personal care and medication management for our residents.

In addition to providing excellent care, we also focus on meaningful and engaging social activities for our residents, delivered through a Montessori method of engagement. This means that instead of “entertaining” our residents, we work to engage with them in meaningful ways. We may spend time in our very own grocery store area, or folding towels together, or working on a project at the tool

bench. We look for ways to help our residents enjoy the things they used to in life and get back to the things they loved. We have a gardening club, walking club, and enjoy a host of group activities throughout the day as well. We also go on trips outside of the community and have recently enjoyed time at a local horse and tulip farm.

Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win? Why or why not? Have you won in past years?

Legacy Ridge has never won before. We did encourage friends and family to vote for us, but we were surprised and thrilled to know our presence was noticed.

What do you think is the reason our readers love Legacy Ridge enough to vote it "Best Of"?

We provide a service to the community that is very much needed.

Why do you enjoy doing business in Haymarket-Gainesville, and how long has Legacy Ridge been located here?

We have been open for almost three years. The community needed a facility that specializes in memory care and with so many 55 and over new builds in the area there are several caregivers that need the support. Most of the team that works at Legacy Ridge has had a loved one with dementia and truly has the compassion to work with elderly who are affected with it

Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?

Legacy Ridge offers once a month a Dementia Caregiver Support Group that is open to anyone in the community. We also offer a monthly Memory Café which enables people to participate in an activity with their loved one who has dementia such as cooking, painting or exercise. We conduct fundraising events that support the Alzheimer’s Association and every year we participate in the Alzheimer’s Walk.

W: C21NM.com/offices/gainesville

FB: @c21nmgainesville

Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?

I’m a residential realtor with Century 21 New Millennium here in Haymarket/Gainesville. I’ve been providing real estate services for over 22 years including representing sellers and buyers in Northern Virginia. I’m lucky to have a career I’m truly passionate about. “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.”

I specialize in selling luxury properties. Our creative marketing, high quality photography and professional community/property videos, staging, virtual staging and social media exposure allow us to consistently get top dollars for our clients.

Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win?

Why or why not? Have you won in past years?

I’ve been fortunate to have won in the past two years so I was pleasantly surprised I won again this year! It’s such an honor and privilege to be voted Best Realtor in Haymarket and Gainesville.

What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it "Best Of"?

I believe the reason my clients and friends vote for me is because they recognize my commitment to providing excellent customer service, exceeding expectations and my sales track record.

Why do you enjoy doing business in Haymarket/Gainesville, and how long has your business been located here?

I’ve lived in Haymarket since 2006. It’s such a wonderful community. I love living here and helping my clients with the sale or purchase of their homes.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?

We live in a very transient area. I’d like the readers to know that I have years of experience working with relocation companies and can assist with the process of moving out and into our area. Also, through our relocation network, I can help find an amazing realtor in other states.

Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?

Giving back to the community is very important to me. Through PWBC (a business networking group I belong to), we’ve been supporting Haymarket food pantry, Serve Our Willing Warriors and World Central Kitchen. I also volunteer for my neighborhood’s HOA helping organize community events and have been sponsoring my kids’ schools and our awesome swim team.

Three Ways Beautiful Salon & Spa

7917 Heritage Village Plaza, Gainesville

P: (571) 284-5986

W: threewaysbeautifulsalon.com

@threewaysbeautifulsalon

Please tell us about Three Ways Beautiful. What products or services does it provide?

Three Ways Beautiful has changed from a salon and spa to a salon to focus more on hair services and eyelash extensions. The Salon offers a range of services including hair extensions, highlights, colors, haircuts, Balayage, smoothing and hair straightening treatments, perms, waxing, threading, makeup and bridal services, barbering, eyelash extension, and many other services. We also have a diva curl specialist who specializes in curly hair.

The products that we have chosen to use in our salon contain natural ingredients that are free from harsh sulfates, parabens and other harmful chemicals. Eufora, Kevin Murphy and J Beverly Hills are a few key lines we carry that are designed to deliver healthy results, are cruelty-free and Kevin Murphy recycles the plastic waste from the ocean to bottle its products.

Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win?

Why or why not? Have you won in past years?

This is our 7th win for best salon and our first for barber. With all the amazing barbers out there we are honored. We do have stylists who

are amazing with barber cuts and we have more men and teenage boys coming in for the latest trends.

What do you think is the reason our readers love Three Ways Beautiful enough to vote it "Best Of"?

Since the beginning we have been given the opportunity with our success to give back to the community. We hear how homey and inviting our salon is. Clients come in as guests and leave as family. Sometimes it's not about the money but taking care of each other and I do not charge for guests who are going through chemo or are going through the loss of a family member or any such circumstance. It’s enough that we can just be there for support to help them through these challenges.

Why do you enjoy doing business in Haymarket/Gainesville, and how long has your business been located here?

We have been in business for 7 years and love this area and giving back to the community that has so lovingly embraced us. We love supporting the local schools, churches, women's club, fundraisers for cancer awareness and other medical donations, foster care, comfort cases, volunteering at homeless shelters and battered women’s events. We have a 10% off discount for military families. We donate food for families in need and we are a drop off for the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. We also

love to support our fellow small businesses by referrals as well.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?

We believe in the magic of kindness. "True beauty is born through our actions and aspirations and in the kindness we offer to others.” We want our guests to know that we are here for them. We are committed and dedicated to making sure our guests are satisfied and happy with their services as well as their experience with us. We are known for our complimentary coffee bar with our fresh ground Cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, and herbal teas. It's these little things, our commitment to our clients and our community, acts of kindness, compassion and our welcoming atmosphere that makes us who we are.

Can you tell us how you support other local businesses?

We love to support our small local businesses and neighbors as well as those here in our shopping center and have always included them in our events. One of us eats at Jimbos at least once a day and I personally love the salmon. (They serve breakfast on the weekends as well!) Choong Man's Chicken is very good, too. We also love Gainesville Pharmacy and Pal is the one of the best in the business. If you like that personal touch, he is your go to pharmacist.

Please tell us about A Pup’s Valley. What products or services does it provide?

A Pup’s Valley is a family owned and operated dog daycare, boarding, grooming spa and training facility. We offer cage free daycare with both indoor and outdoor playrooms. Our facility also has an onsite apartment where one of our amazing employees lives full time. This ensures that the pups that are boarding are never left alone at night.

Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win? Why or why not? Have you won in past years?

We were honored to win the Best of Daycare/ Boarding, Grooming and Training multiple years now. We were very surprised that we were nominated and awarded for best employer this year. We have a staff of about 30 employees that are true animal lovers. We are so appreciative of everything they do to make the pups safe and comfortable while they are with us.

What do you think is the reason our readers love A Pup’s Valley enough to vote it "Best Of"?

We believe we were voted Best Of as we strive to set ourselves apart from other facilities that offer similar services. We have smaller playgroups than others and a better pup to person ratio. We have a clean facility and outstanding customer service. We get to know our clients. They are our extended family.

Why do you enjoy doing business in Haymarket-Gainesville, and how long has A Pup’s Valley been located here?

Our business has been located in Haymarket for just over 4 years now. Owners Jim and Andrea Payne live in Haymarket as do a good number of the team. It’s important to us to live and work in our community. Haymarket’s population has so many pups the services were needed here.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about A Pup’s Valley?

A Pup’s Valley has strong partnerships with other local pet businesses so we can help our clients connect to meet their needs. We have partnerships with Vets to Pets who does mobile vet care and home euthanasia; Meg’s Loving Petcare who does in-home petcare; Miss Kibbles who is a retail store that carries your pet’s nutritional needs and offers supplies for your pets. We all work together to provide the best care in our community.

Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?

A Pup’s Valley supports local community sports teams such as baseball, swim teams, and school events. Additionally, we host multiple pup adoption events throughout the year. We love being able to help local families make a connection with a new pup addition. We also partner with the Willing warriors to provide free boarding services for the families pups that are staying at the retreat.

I Can See Clearly Now

One of our clients recently purchased a new home and needed help with their window treatments. What kind, how they should be hung, if they should come with drapery cords or not. We were happy to answer their questions and would be happy to answer yours, too. Send them to yaron@ formaltraditional.com and you too could see your answers in print.

I just bought a new house and need something on the windows. How do I choose the right kind of window treatment?

Congrats on your new purchase! The first thing we consider is if the treatments are going to be functional, meaning they can move; or decorative, meaning that they cannot. Even if you only ever want to open and close them once in a while, they will have to be constructed so they can move. Next we determine if you want them to move side to side like drapes, or up and down like roman or roller shades. Lastly we narrow down the particular style and ornamental considerations.

Pro Tip: There are options that articulate along another axis if you want to consider blinds as well.

I didn’t realize my neighbors were so close and able to look into my living room. What will ensure privacy?

When it is dark outside and there are lights on inside your house, it’s possible to see in. Complete privacy is only achieved when you can’t see out and they can’t see in. The easiest way to ensure this is to have your drapes lined with blackout lining which will block at least 98% of the light.

Pro Tip: As you probably want to allow light in sometimes, consider a layer of sheers behind your drapes which will partially obscure the view, but allow light through.

Should I take the window treatments up to the ceiling?

Under most circumstances we want to mount the hardware as high as possible. This helps create the feeling that the room is taller by drawing the eye all the way up. You’ll want to leave a little room at the top for installation though, unless the hardware is ceiling mounted.

Pro Tip: If you are hiding hardware beneath a cornice or board mounted valance, consider mounting the hardware directly to the top treatment to reduce holes in your walls.

Do I need drapery hardware with cords? While we too worry about the strangulation hazard posed by cords, many people prefer corded hardware because it helps keep people from dirtying the drapes by touching them with their hands. You can always look into a baton drawn treatment which operates via a stick attached at the header to keep cords – and hands –away.

Pro Tip: If you do have a corded treatment, make sure that at a minimum it is secured with either a tensioner or cleat.

Do I need to speak with my HOA?

Typically an HOA is most concerned with the view from outside your home and most will require that you have a white lining facing out your windows.

Pro Tip: If you are getting window treatments made at different times, make sure that at a minimum you have the same color lining on each side of the house. L

Do you have a project you could use assistance with?

Trouvaille Brewery

Tucked away on the main strip of Haymarket is a piece of Americana from our past. An old public school reborn into a brewery. It’s not a bar. People aren’t there to get drunk. They are there to enjoy delicious craft beer and community. Trouvaille Brewing Company opened in 2022 with passion from its ownership group of five: Cody Powell, Stephen Boyajian, Jake Osman, Greg Ramirez, and Ricky Elliott. For the past year, Trouvaille has served its community flavorful and creative craft beers, and it all started, like most great things in America, at home.

Homebrewing, to be exact.

The brew club was called the DOH’ which stands for Down Obsessed HomeBrewers. So obsessed, in fact, that opening a brewery was always the “dream.” After a November 2020 group message, the guys began planning their joint venture. They crowdfunded through a site called Mainvest which offers revenue-sharing notes in return for investment, and they raised 100k in just 21 days. They wanted to be local to the community and, after some searching, found the perfect location to bring their dream alive. Located in this writer's old elementary school. Gainesville Elementary School opened in 1935. Later, it became PACE West School, a special education school. In the past several years, it has been reborn as a place of commerce. Trouvaille and others have made it their home.

The homeyness of Trouvaille starts with the crisp white subway tile lining the draft wall. To the right is a hand-painted mural with a pop of color that draws the eye. The concrete bar top brings a rustic modern feel. The old-school menu boards pay tribute to the historic location in Haymarket. To the left of the bar are glass windows peeking into the brew room. The tanks are named after golden girl characters (Betty is the best IMO.) The tanks aren’t the only place the

owner's personalities show through. Monty Morin of Piedmont loves the “creative name selections.” The menu board is a blend of tributes to the community and famous movie memories—with beer names like Hazemarket and Welcome to Clark County. Above, the ceiling is draped with Edison light bulbs. The warm glow bouncing off the bright white of the tile and the personality intertwined into the design gives the customer a feeling of being simultaneously on a hilltop ski chalet and at home.

The knowledgeable and friendly staff serves every delectable beverage with a smile. Helping pair the customer with the perfect beer for them. When the customer sits down and takes a sip, they are hit with a punch of flavor. Customers like Ben Bryan of Gainesville love the “Very unique beer selection.” Citrus forward saisons, full body milk stouts, light wheat ales, and everyone’s favorite, the IPA, each beer with its own personality and flavor profile. They are distinctive and delicious. Brewed with care and quality ingredients. Once the customer tries one, they will want to return to try them all.

Setting out on this journey, I was most interested in the answer to one question. Why five people in an ownership group?

After speaking with them, it’s easy to see— teamwork, community, and family. They each carry unique and specialized strengths. Independently they are creative, industrious, thoughtful, charismatic, and professional. They respect others' strengths and work hard to allow everyone to shine. Dividing the

responsibilities of the brewery into five allows more time to focus on family and community. And while they each might specialize in different areas, they all have the same common passion, beer, and mission, “quality over everything.”

Trouvaille has cultivated an environment that embraces both family and community. Partnering and sponsoring with local youth organizations, creating fun events like Trivia and video game nights and welcoming adults and children by offering old-school cream soda. Helping mix the pub with the soda shop. It’s a place where one can bring their family, meet up with their community; or stop by for a cold one and conversation on

the way home.

If you’re looking for delicious craft beer, a place to relax and chat after a long day, or a place to connect with family and community, this is the place. Trouvaille Brewery is a hidden gem in the town of Haymarket. But it shouldn’t be hidden, so make sure you stop by, grab a beer and chat with the great staff and ownership group. And when you get home, tell your neighbor so Trouvaille can continue growing our local community. L

This local band mixes up music and fun

The name of the band may be Classic Spotlight, but these musicians play everything from Elvis Presley to Miley Cyrus. Tom Griffith of Haymarket, who is the band’s manager, keyboardist and vocalist, said, “We’ve played German songs at Oktoberfest and we've played Irish music. Sometimes it's a real challenge, but it improves our skills and this way we keep learning.”

Whether they get requests for good old rock and roll, ballads from the 50s, British pop from the 60s, or country music, they’ll play them. If they don’t know a song, they’ll be ready to play it at their next gig. Many of the band members have been performing for over 50 years, so they have the experience to get it done.

John Hill, lead guitar player and vocalist from Manassas, who joined the group in 2007, said, “Playing a variety of music makes it more interesting and allows us to reach a broader audience. On top of that, it really increases our musicianship. Plus, good music is good music no matter the genre.”

Since they’ve been playing music for so long in this band and others, fans who came to see them as teenagers are now bringing their kids and grandkids to performances. Classic Spotlight, which was formed in 1992 under the name The Music Box, changed its name in 2011. But, many of the members have played together for decades before that.

years,” said Griffith. “When we were very young, in the 60s, we both played with other bands, but if I needed a guitar player, I'd call him and he’d come. Bobby Embrey [bass player and vocalist] and I played together in the 70s, and eventually I got him to join this group about 10 or 12 years ago.”

He added, “Bobby, Tom Kane and I all went to school together, so we're local to this area.”

Said Kane, from Linden, the drummer and vocalist who joined Classic Spotlight about five years ago, “Tommy and I actually had a band called Crisis back in high school in the 60s, so we’ve known each other a long, long time.”

Rounding out the group is vocalist Nicole Peyton, who lives in Bealeton and is the band’s youngest member. She joined seven years ago.

With so many people in the band, some might think it would be hard to agree on how to do things, but with this group, that’s not the case. “There are really great musicians in this band, but none of us is trying to be a superstar,” said Griffith. “We're just having fun.”

Added Hill, “You really have to have chemistry with the people you're playing with. Some people just aren't going to get along and those bands won't last. But if you find the right type of people, have the same musical direction and the same aspirations, it’ll make things easier.”

Maybe the most important thing, they say, is to have a passion for music. “I was always beating on things in school,” said Kane, who lives in Manassas. “I would take change and stick it in my desk and start beating that metal desk. It was the perfect snare drum.”

Added Griffith, “I started playing music when I saw Bob Embrey at Parkside Elementary School playing in a group that had an organist. I then learned to play the organ.”

Hill’s first memories include his parents playing music on the stereo. “I was probably 2 or 3 three years old, and I remember after they put me to bed, I'd get up and sneak out to listen to them sitting downstairs listening to their hi-fi. I’ve also watched guitar players throughout my life. That's just what I wanted to play since I was 5 years old.”

Peyton said performing is all she ever wanted to do too, and has been doing it since she was a little girl. “According to my mother, I was singing before I was talking. I've been performing since I was 3 years old for audiences and this is what I love doing.”

Daniels, from Manassas, was inspired by watching other bands perform. “In 1962, I was visiting one of my cousins who played in a bar band. I was able to see him play and

was like, ‘Oh God, I want to do this!’ That was it from then on. Everything was about the music.”

For Embrey, who lives in Gainesville, his love of music was ignited by watching Elvis in 1956 and then later the Beatles in 1964 on the Ed Sullivan Show. “Being in a band was a way to meet people and have fun,” he said. “One of the first bands I played with was paid in frozen pizzas.” He later played in a band with Griffith in the 70s.

Classic Spotlight plays all around the area, including at Blue Ridge Seafood in Gainesville, Blue Valley Vineyards & Winery in Delaplace, the Harris Pavilion in Manassas, and Lion and Bull in Haymarket. They also play at private events and parties such as wedding receptions and class reunions. In addition, they perform at many charity benefits for nonprofits including Rolling Thunder and Youth for Tomorrow in Bristow.

“One of the big reasons people follow us is that when we play music, we not only play to have fun, but we get the audience involved so they have fun too,” said Hill. L

Yes, There Are Superheroes in Haymarket

Meet the Dominion Women’s Club

Founded in 1890, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is an international organization with a long history of working to affect positive change within local communities as well as on a larger scale – from advocating for women’s right to vote and working toward the improvement of child labor laws, to creating conservation programs that protect endangered species and raising millions of dollars to support public libraries.

One chapter, GFWC Dominion Women’s Club (DWC), works directly in Prince William County and Fauquier County to improve lives through active hands-on volunteerism as well as through donations to numerous local organizations.

DWC’s current President, Rosemary Boettke, joined the organization after her move from Lorton to Haymarket in 2013. As a former

English teacher who was still working in Lorton as a school media specialist, Boettke was looking to meet people in the Haymarket community and was drawn to the DWC’s first-ever author’s event, a fundraising event that is still one of the organization’s most popular events each year.

“It was a really friendly and nice atmosphere, and they have a very active education committee. I contacted the president through the website [to join]. It’s been a very pleasurable and wonderful experience being a part of the club,” Boettke said.

DWC is structured around a wide variety of committees from education and libraries, arts and culture, and civic engagement and outreach, to environment, health and wellness, and public relations.

“We’re really busy with lots of organizations in the area,” Boettke said.

The club is particularly involved with multiple elementary schools in the area, through tutoring, buying books, providing gift-wrapping services at an annual holiday event, donating classroom supplies, and organizing teacher appreciation events or activities. They also offer a yearly scholarship opportunity for a senior girl in high

school who demonstrates excellence in both academics and service to her community.

The organization also works with Gainesville Health and Rehab Center and provides baskets to homebound senior citizens through its civic engagement committee. Meanwhile, other committees support organizations like Fauquier Community Theatre, Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA ), Hilton Community Arts Center (part of GMU), Leopold’s Preserve, and many others, through donations and in-person volunteerism.

“Each of our committees is very vibrant -- this club really offers women that join it [the opportunity] to pursue their passions. There are a lot of opportunities for women to do quite a large variety of things,” Boettke said.

Boettke also says that what makes DWC a little different is that they’re actually a nonprofit that helps other nonprofits, citing their donations to food pantries and their work with nature preserves, among other work.

One of the recipients of DWC’s charitable work and donations is Bull Run Mountain Conservancy, an organization dedicated to education, research, and stewardship in an effort to protect the Bull Run Mountain Region. Michael Keiffer, the organization’s executive director, says that DWC’s involvement with the organization is extremely important.

“They have been extremely supportive of us for well over a decade -- financially supportive and programmatically. They help with our annual Halloween safari, our biggest event of the year and they support by attending our programs -- they’re great, easy to work with, and fun,” Keiffer said. He added that they are in the initial stages of planning a new program with DWC.

Deb Jewell, DWC’s PR Committee Chairwoman, and Haymarket resident for over 20 years, also became involved in DWC as a way to give back to the community. In her role, she has worked on building DWC’s relation-

ships with the business community.

Jewell, an IT professional by day, said, “I make a living connecting devices, but I make a life connecting people -connecting women with businesses that they care about.”

From first responders, veterans, students, and families to conservancies and the art community, DWC’s philanthropic reach is wide in Prince William and Fauquier, and the organization continues to grow both in terms of membership as well as the success of their fundraisers, with this year’s inaugural tea and fashion show event turning out to be a wildly popular, sold-out event.

“One of the nicest things [about joining DWC] was learning that I was a part of a historical organization that was always working for the change of women and children,” Boettke said. “We meet needs in the community in the way that we can. We’re part of a whole history of women trying to affect change.” L

Jewell says that the organization is always looking for friends and sponsors. Reach out to the organization through their website at dominionwomansclub.org.

“We’re part of a whole history of women
In June, second graders at Gravely Elementary School in Haymarket thanked the DWC for its support during the year. Several members go once a week to tutor them in reading and math. DWC members Sue Mork, Martha Feeney, Rae Lamb, Mary Ellen Murphy, and Irmen Horne plant flowers and maintain the flower bed in front of town hall and the police station in Haymarket.

Always read through the recipe once or twice before you begin. Knowing exactly what ingredients, tools and steps are involved will help you have a smoother kitchen experience.

Get organized, gather your ingredients and the kitchen tools you’ll need.

Prep ingredients ahead of time and clean up as you go.

Always ask an adult before using any kitchen appliance.

Churns of Endearment

The Return of the Ice Cream Social

While in the spring a young man’s fancy turns to love, in hot, steamy August, my fancy turns to ice cream. Homemade ice cream. Rich, creamy, drip-down-the-cone-and-onto-my-chin, ice cream. The kind that conjures up folksy thoughts of ice cream socials when people gathered in backyards and church halls for hand churned, homemade ice cream. Yum. Only now-a-days, instead of ice cream socials, we have social media and eat our ice cream virtually.

I Churn for No One

I say it’s time to make ice cream and bring back the ice cream social. But lugging a bulky, monster of an ice cream making machine out of storage once a year is not exactly a culinary good time. With a little kitchen magic, there’s no trick to whipping up old fashioned, ice-cream-social-quality, ice cream. It’s easier than you think. No churning or special freezing machines required. Just mix and pop into the freezer compartment of your refrigerator.

Let’s get into the kitchen!

Candy Bar Ice Cream Pops and Sundae Cups

The easiest ice cream you will ever make. Rich. Creamy. Decadent. Reminiscent of Haagen Daz before it went global.

MAKES 3 TO 4 POPS OR 2 TO 3 SUNDAE CUPS

EQUIPMENT

For pops – 3 or 4 popsicle sticks (sub heavy weight plastic spoons)

Freezer safe container (about 5 inches tall) to hold pops up right as they freeze (an empty coffee can works well)

For cups – 2 or 3 (8 to 10 oz.) disposable cups

INGREDIENTS

7 Tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (dairy or plant)

10 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream (dairy or plant)

½ teaspoon vanilla

3 to 4 regular size candy bars (your favorite)

DIRECTIONS

1. Whisk condensed milk, cream and vanilla. Set aside.

2. For pops; wrappers are used as molds so take care not to puncture or tear them. Candy bars in wrappers that measure at least 2 inches wide work best.

3. Cut off one end of each wrapper and remove the candy.

4. Cut the candy into random ¼ inch pieces. Spoon 1 teaspoon of candy pieces into the bottom of each empty wrapper. Pour in 1 inch of the milk mixture. Put a popsicle stick (or spoon - bowl down) into each. Alternately layer candy and milk mixture to fill. (You may not use all the candy.) Stand filled wrappers upright in a container. Freeze overnight. Cut away wrappers for serving.

5. For sundae cups; wrappers are not used. Remove candy from wrappers and cut into random ¼ inch pieces.

6. Beginning with candy, alternately layer candy and milk mixture into cups. Leave some head space if you want to add toppings or whipped cream at serving time. Freeze overnight.

Key Lime Sherbet

The chilly taste of Key West without the travel time.

MAKE ABOUT 3/4 PINT

INGREDIENTS

2 teaspoons lime gelatin dessert mix (like Jello)

¼ cup boiling water

3 Tablespoons lime juice (fresh or bottled)

½ (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk (dairy or plant)

7 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream (36% fat or higher - dairy or plant)

DIRECTIONS

Dissolve the gelatin mix in the boiling water. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into a freezer safe container. Cover. Freeze overnight before serving.

Shaken Cookies & Crème Ice Cream

By the time August rolls around you’ve probably run out of ideas for keeping the kids busy and off their cell phones. Here’s a tasty science lesson that will have them begging for more education: shaking lets the fat in the cream trap air which transforms a liquid (the cream) into a solid (whipped cream). Isn’t science yummy?

MAKES 1 PINT

USES 1 WIDE MOUTH CANNING JAR WITH LID

INGREDIENTS

1 cup cold heavy whipping cream (36% fat or higher - dairy or plant)

¼ cup cold sweetened condensed milk (dairy or plant)

3 Oreos (or other cookies - coarsely crumbled)

DIRECTIONS

Chill the jar and lid in the freezer for 30 minutes. (Longer is OK). Put the cream and condensed milk into the chilled jar. Cap and shake till you can feel the mixture begin to plop instead of being liquid (about 6 minutes depending on how fast you shake). Stop shaking or the mixture will return to liquid. Remove cap and transfer to a freezer safe container. Fold in cookies. Cover. Freeze at least 4 hours before serving. Overnight is better.

Strawberry Sorbet

Light and lovely. Serve it up a notch for adults by pouring a jigger of gin, tequila or triple sec over the top and adding a straw. Other frozen fruits, berries, or a combo can swap for strawberries. Just be sure to partially thaw whatever you use. If the fruit is too hard, your food processor or blender may get damaged.

MAKES 1 PINT

INGREDIENTS

3 cups sliced frozen strawberries (fresh or unsweetened packaged)

1/3 cup sugar syrup (to taste – recipe follows)

1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

Partially thaw strawberries at room temperature (5 to 10 minutes). Put into a blender or food processor along with sugar syrup and lemon juice. Blend till it eventually comes together (it will) and looks like soft serve ice cream – 2 to 3 minutes. It’s ready to eat or freeze for a firmer texture.

Sugar Syrup (For 1 batch of sorbet)

INGREDIENTS

½ cup sugar

1 cup water

DIRECTIONS

In a small pot, mix sugar and water. Bring to a boil (covered). Remove cover. Gently boil till syrupy –about 5 minutes. Chill before using.

Chocolate Maple Banana No Cream Ice Cream

OMG…. Fabulous without a smidge of dairy or fat! Be sure to partially thaw the bananas. If they’re too hard, your food processor or blender may get damaged.

MAKES ¾ PINT

INGREDIENTS

2 frozen bananas (each about 5 inches long, peeled and cut into 1 inch chunks)

4 teaspoons cocoa

1 Tablespoon pure maple or pancake syrup

DIRECTIONS

Partially thaw bananas at room temperature (5 to 10 minutes). Put into ae blender or food processor. Add cocoa and syrup. Blend till it looks like soft serve ice cream - 2 to 3 minutes. Ready to eat or freeze for a firmer texture.

And the winner for top tune is…

Third grade students at Occoquan Elementary School took home a big prize in the Michael & Sons jingle contest. The annual competition is open to students from Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C. This year, there were almost 50 elementary schools that entered.

Judging was based on social media engagement - likes, shares, and comments, with each one counting as one vote. A winner was selected from each of the regions that Michael & Sons services, winning a $5,000 prize. Occoquan Elementary was the winner in the Northern Virginia region.

“The lyrics I created, and the students from Mrs. Infante's third grade class created the movements,” shared Whitney Burkholder, music teacher at Occoquan. “The students were enthusiastic to learn and participate, they were actively engaged in knowing how our school was performing against the competition, and when the winners were announced, they were bouncing off the walls,” Burkholder added.

Caught up in the pickleball craze? Manassas Mall is too

If you’re one of the millions caught up in the pickleball craze, get ready.

Prince William’s first dedicated indoor pickleball facility will open in Manassas Mall early next year.

The Maryland-based company, Dill Dinkers, announced that it has signed a 10-year lease with Spinoso Real Estate Group, owner of the mall, for a location across from Autobahn Indoor Speedway.

The 16,485-square-foot space will include six regulation-sized pickleball courts with fences and an outdoor surface, bathrooms, private event space, a pro shop, a ball machine and a reservation system. Dill Dinkers will offer clinics, private and semi-private lessons and leagues in the space and will have a director of pickleball on staff.

"There is no question pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country," said Bob Sweeney, Prince William Chamber president and CEO. "With Anheuser-Busch, Mark Cuban, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James all joining the ranks of pickleball team ownership, it's clear that pickleball is making a great impact on our national and local economy."

Take your selfies at “Something Wonderful”

Local artist John Hartt has unveiled an exhibit called “Something Wonderful,” a larger-thanlife outdoor installation of strange and wonderful creatures. “Something Wonderful,” which opened in June at the Harris Pavilion in downtown Manassas, will be on display through Labor Day. An artist’s reception will be held at the pavilion on Aug. 4 from 7-11 p.m.

For the installation of “Something Wonderful,” Hartt (also known as “Jortt”) created 15 out-of-this-world creatures. Each painting depicts an 8-foot tall character with a different personality and a different story. These characters are designed to celebrate the diversity of the community, according to the artist, and they are ideal to take selfies with.

Each piece in the exhibit has a QR code that directs visitors to an online exhibit where they can share their interpretation of the art. As an artist, Hartt said, he loves to hear people’s stories and often finds people’s interpretations of his art more creative than his original concept.

The circus is coming!

Circus Vazquez is coming to Potomac Mills mall this month. The circus will feature a new cast, new production and new blue and white air-conditioned tent when it arrives Aug. 4. Performances will continue through Aug. 21.

Now in its 54th year, Circus Vazquez’ new 2023 show, presented entirely in English, features ringmaster Memo Vazquez, a third-generation performer. The show also features Ukraine’s award-winning clown, Housch ma Housch, the Reyes Brothers from Chile, who will deftly demonstrate their fast-paced juggling prowess, the Legion M Teeterboard Troupe, direct from Mongolia, who will perform acrobatics while unicycle master Pavel Valla Bertini will keep audiences on the edge of their seat.

For tickets and additional information, visit www.CircusVazquez.com. Tickets will also be available in person at the box office beginning opening day.
