UPCYCLE Mark Harrington, owner of Remix Market in Warrenton, saves as many items as possible from the doom of the dumpster and turns them into stately home décor and furnishings. Harrington rejects the notion of trashing things simply because they don’t look attractive or are slightly damaged and says, “By reviving, repurposing or upcycling the pieces brought to Remix Market, we are not only reducing what ends up in a landfill but giving these items a new life.” SALVAGE Dillon Jewell, part-time arborist, and owner of Great Run Woodworks in Warrenton, takes his DIY efforts to the extreme by painstakingly creating exquisite woodworking home décor from lumber salvaged from removals or – and this is the awesome part – lumber salvaged from your own yard. The tree that had to go? Now it can become a cutting board for your kitchen or a set of coasters you can use or give as a gift. It could even become a table or door or desk. The options are almost endless.

he start of a new year usually inspires people to come up with resolutions to do or achieve something over the next twelve months. Sadly, most of us ditch those goals before the month of January is gone. So how about making a resolution that’s relatively easy to keep, has no deadline to be accomplished by, and is good for everybody? I’m suggesting we all commit to making old things new again. This simple pledge could potentially have a huge impact on our landfills, not to mention our pocketbooks. There are lots of ways to give new life to old things. Here are just a few.
Go with a pro to… REPAINT Nadine Hollingsworth, owner of The Spotted Leopard in Gainesville, specializes in what I like to call environmental refreshment. The company paints kitchen and bathroom cabinetry and furniture. This breathes new life into existing pieces and saves homeowners thousands of dollars (not to mention the headache of living through a remodeling project), and lessens the burden on our landfills.

EMBRACE YOUR INNER DO-IT-YOURSELFER If you have a creative bent, time, and patience, you can tackle any of these forms of artsy DIY creation or restoration techniques. You can find lots of terrific educational information on Pinterest and YouTube (both of which are perfect for learning at your own pace), and if you’re really into it, try taking a class at AR Workshop in Bristow, or Remix Market or Past Reflections Antiques, both in Warrenton. CONNECT WITH YOUR INNER MARIE KONDO Last but not least, a fantastic way to make old things new again is by donating or consigning them to places where others can discover them. I’m talking about the “old things” taking up valuable space in your closets, drawers, attic, basement, under the beds, and in the garage. Things like furniture, clothing, rugs, gifts you never got to return, household accessories and tchotchkes. Simply ask yourself, a la Marie Kondo, if the item sparks joy. If the answer is no, donate or consign it and give your “old thing” a chance to enjoy new life in someone else’s home. When and why did you decide to join Outback? I started with Outback Steakhouse more than 16 years ago and quickly learned it was my passion. Over the years I have had many roles. Being a manager, training staff around the country, and being a proprietor for two different Outbacks. How does your business serve the local community? Right now we donate food through the local distribution center, Harvest Food. We also donated over $10,000 to Operation Homefront our first night of business. At my previous Outback, we donated hundreds of meals to local hospitals and essential businesses. We fed teachers and students as well as provided hospitality training to
local schools. We fundraised for PTOs and supported literacy by creating our own reading frequency program for students. We are excited to get to know Gainesville better so we can find ways to be a valued member of this community too. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. Developing people who work for me so they can grow into greater roles within the company and/or in their professional life. Seeing them flourish in their next phase and to know that I have been a part of it is a joy and a reward I wouldn’t trade for anything. Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? Appreciate diversity. Representation matters and it will change the way you do business when people from different perspectives have a voice in the way that you do things. Challenge yourself to be uncomfortable. If something seems daunting or feels overwhelming, that is what growth feels like. Listen. All the time, to everyone. Everyone wants to be heard. It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? I live in Vienna right now. We are looking to move to this area though, as I have been bombarded by some of the nicest people I’ve ever met since I started working in this community. What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Fall is my personal favorite season anywhere. I look forward to finding out what this area does
for the holidays to celebrate and be a part of it if we can. What are some hobbies you enjoy? I enjoy going to museums and crafting with my goddaughter. Hopefully when the pandemic is over I can do more of both again. What is your favorite restaurant? After all these years, I still eat in my restaurant every day. I have to say I genuinely love some good sushi and Bonefish Grill (and not just because Bonefish is a sister company!). What is your favorite local high school sports team? Having a lot of employees that attend Patriot and Battlefield High Schools, I am going to choose the middle ground and say, “Go Bobcats AND Pioneers!” Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one and why? As I mentioned before, we are passionate about our work with the Harvest Food Donation program. It allows us to provide nutritious meals to local families who need it. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job was working for my father’s auto shop in Florida when I was thirteen. While I loved going to work with my dad all summer long, I really appreciated my first restaurant job a few years later when I became a host. As a people person, I have been fated to love this industry more than any other and the discount on great food doesn’t hurt. ❖

Medical providers virtually assess and diagnose many pediatric conditions
T
hroughout the coronavirus pandemic, hospitals and doctor’s offices have stepped up to protect their communities. Given the critical need to maintain medical facilities as safe environments, they immediately established new cleaning protocols, stringent sanitation procedures and staff and patient screenings. Despite these safety measures, there is a level of risk associated with doing anything outside the home. There are patients — such as those with underlying conditions or an ill family member — who may be more comfortable using virtual care instead of visiting their doctor in person. This group often includes pediatric patients. According to Priya Tulsi, MD, a board-
certified pediatrician at Novant Health UVA Health System Olde Town Pediatrics in Manassas, virtual care can be a solution for assessing several common problems in children and adolescents. “The pandemic has turned our world upside down, and it’s been incredibly valuable to be able to offer virtual care,” said Tulsi. “During a virtual visit, we can assess common ailments, such as fevers lasting 1-2 days or runny noses, or evaluate visible concerns like ringworm, in a convenient, risk-free way. It can be a great option for parents who either want to avoid the risk of being in a public setting or just want the convenience — sometimes both.”
A Local Parent’s Experience Nina Hirshman is one parent who needed both convenience and safety. The mother of two from Manassas, who works in the medical
field herself, has scheduled two virtual visits with Novant Health UVA Health System providers for her 11-year-old son since the pandemic began. To her, the benefits of virtual care made it an obvious solution. Hirshman’s son’s annual checkup was able to be conducted almost completely virtually. She recorded his height, weight and temperature at home and relayed the information to the doctor. Although he did need to go into the doctor’s office to receive a shot, Hirshman shared that the in-person aspect of the visit was quick since most of his checkup had already been done. “As a working mother, it’s been a gamechanger to be able to have my children seen by a doctor over the computer,” said Hirshman. “I understand that there are still some things, like immunizations, that require an in-person visit. No parent should hesitate to bring their children into the office when it’s necessary. But the ability to do annual checkups or have minor concerns looked at over video has been really helpful during such an unpredictable and stressful time.” Hirshman shared that she wouldn’t hesitate to schedule more virtual care visits for her son and 13-year-old daughter in the future, even once the pandemic is a thing of the past. “I think virtual care has changed the way we pursue medical care,” said Hirshman. “It’s less disruptive to the school day and workday. It’s safe and very convenient.”
Virtual Care vs. In-Person As Hirshman acknowledged, there are still medical events that require in-person care, including newborn visits, comprehensive physical exams, lab work, and immunizations, as well as certain conditions, such as prolonged fevers, chest pain, hearing, and vision screenings. However, there are many issues medical professionals can assess virtually. “Virtual visits have been an important part of allowing us to continue providing quality care to our communities during this time,” said Tulsi. “It is our greatest privilege at Novant Health UVA Health System to be entrusted with children’s healthcare. Though an in-office visit is sometimes needed or may become necessary based on the virtual assessment or progression of the condition, we’re glad to provide a virtual care option to families.” ❖

HELP! I DON’T HAVE NEARLY ENOUGH SPACE TO PUT ALL THIS STUFF AWAY. HOW DO I MAKE MORE ROOM? Let’s start with making the most of the room you already have. A closet with a hanging bar can have a series of hanging "shelves" hung from the existing rod. You would be surprised just how much more clothing you can fit if each piece doesn’t need to be on a hanger. You need to PRO be able to see TIP your space in order to work with it. If you don't have ample light in the closet, consider adding a battery operated puck light. They’re inexpensive, give off very little heat, and don’t require any installation.

I HAVE VERY NARROW CLOSETS. IF I USE ALL THE SPACE WHERE WILL MY HANGING CLOTHES GO? Narrow closets can have a rolling clothes rack stored inside to add additional hanging capacity. When you need to get in, roll the rack out and step on in. Still need more hanging space? Consider waterfall style “cascading hangers” like retailers use. They’re great for making the most efficient use of space. PRO TIP
MY CLOSETS ARE FULL. NOW WHAT? Pick up some long, thin, underbed Rubbermaid containers. Pack them efficiently and you’ll be surprised just how much you can store in them. If you can’t find the type with wheels, consider placing the container on a stiff sheet of plastic like a carpet protector so it can be pulled out more easily. And if you do find the type with wheels, be sure to measure the available space beneath the bed so the container isn’t too tall. PRO TIP

OK, I’VE FILLED THE CLOSETS AND PACKED AWAY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE UNDER THE BEDS. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS? Put hooks or pocketed hangers on the backs of doors. Robes, towels, hats, shoes, any number of things can be stored that way. Opaque containers hide the contents and make spaces look less cluttered, but transparent containers allow you to find things more quickly. If you really need all that stuff, better to be able to see what’s where. PRO TIP
ANY FINAL STORAGE IDEAS? Seating such as a bench or ottoman can be designed with a large internal cavity for blankets, pillows, or other bulky items. Always start by finding a place for the largest items and work your way down. When you get to the end, it’s much easier to find a place to store that extra Chapstick than the duvet insert. PRO TIP
The best way to have more space is to have less stuff, but if that isn’t an option vacuum storage bags exist, too.

Changing Lives Through Smaller Sizes Dr. Alexandra Zubowicz performs bariatric surgery close to home STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
F
or years, Greg and Susan Gray struggled with health issues related to their weight. After hormonal therapies for endometriosis caused Susan to gain weight in her 20s, she tried unsuccessfully to lose her pregnancy weight through dieting. She would lose a few pounds, gain them back, and lose them again. Nothing worked to keep it off. She was eventually diagnosed with diabetes, which made weight loss even more difficult no matter what she ate or how much she exercised. Medications for diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol were necessary to treat her health issues. Greg’s weight was a rollercoaster for the last decade, with him reaching his heaviest at 315 pounds. Then a type 2 diabetes diagnosis in 2002 required medications that ultimately stopped controlling his blood sugars and required insulin treatment. For the next eight years, he and his endocrinologists tried over a half dozen insulins and other

medications with small successes and high prices. Susan was the first to consider weight loss surgery at the suggestion of her primary care doctor and a consultation with Dr. Alexandra Zubowicz, medical director of the Bariatric Surgery program at Novant Health UVA Haymarket Medical Center. “Dr. Zubowicz is an experienced surgeon and valued partner,”said Nicholas Dugan, MD, bariatric surgeon at Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Surgical Associates. “Working in tandem with Dr. Zubowicz and all of our experienced team ensures our bariatrics patients have a fully supported weight-loss journey.” Throughout her childhood, Dr. Zubowicz’s parents encouraged healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle and these important life lessons have carried into her adulthood. “It’s critical to adopt healthy practices at a young age,” she says. But of course there are many people who haven’t been afforded the opportunity to begin life this way. This can lead to a downward spiral into medical complications related to obesity. “Genetic changes in childhood set the stage for what a person’s weight will be like for the rest of their lives,” explains Zubowicz. Coming from a long line of doctors, Zubowicz always had a medical career in mind, at first considering psychiatry. However, during medical school, she came to the realization that surgery would be her niche. “I loved that you could fix a problem and help people lead better lives.” Trauma surgery was the path she thought she’d pursue. But with trauma surgery, there are frequent middle-ofthe-night calls that need immediate attention; Zubowicz wasn’t convinced that was for her. And although she knew for certain she wanted to be a surgeon; she began to realize one aspect of it that wasn’t quite what she expected. When someone comes for surgery, often there is a pre-op visit, the procedure, the post-op visit, and that’s it. Afterwards, patients move on with their lives. Zubowicz wanted a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with her patients, something she could achieve by pursuing bariatric surgery. In bariatric surgery, part of the process is a long preoperative phase and afterwards the surgeon and the patient are in life-long contact. “With other surgeries, you fix the problem and that’s it. But this is a long-term relationship,” she emphasizes. “With this surgery, you can have the best of both worlds in medicine.” Zubowicz explains that performing weight loss surgery is done in a “minimally invasive” fashion. “It’s incredible how much one can do with a few tiny incisions.” In almost no time, the overall quality of the patient’s life improves dramatically. There is nothing else in medicine that she’s seen that accomplishes reversing medical problems so quickly and helps people lead longer lives. But what about the stigma associated with weight loss surgery? As recently as fifteen years ago, bariatric surgery was thought of as “taking the easy way out” despite its sometimes-dangerous complications and larger, open incisions. Zubowicz stands resolute about reducing that stigma and the lack of knowledge associated with how weight loss surgery is prepared for and performed today. “The surgery basically jumpstarts the process,” says Zubowicz, and helps tools like diet and exercise be more effective. “Many people don’t know how safe it is, don’t

know it’s an option, and don’t know it is available right here in the area,” she says. Luckily for Greg and Susan Gray, their doctors suggested the procedure and encouraged their consultation with Dr. Zubowicz. After a three-month process that included nutrition counseling, psychiatric evaluations, and pre-surgery procedures, Zubowicz performed Susan’s surgery in December of 2019 at Novant Health UVA Haymarket Medical Center. Not long after, Greg got serious too. He lost 25 pounds during the pre-surgery process and Zubowicz did his surgery at Novant on his birthday. “It was the best present ever,” he says. “Our patients tell us that they feel safe throughout the entire process,” said Stephen Smith, MD, president and chief operating officer, Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center. “They’ve said that their experience – from intake to consult and from surgery to discharge and follow-up – is remarkable.” Within a week of her surgery, Susan was able to stop taking her diabetes and blood pressure medications and three months after, she was able to ditch her cholesterol meds, too. Greg’s results have also been incredible. He’s reduced all of his medications, rarely takes insulin, and within the next few months should be able to stop taking all of his prescriptions. But how much weight have they lost? you ask. To date Susan has lost 80 pounds and says, “I feel 20 years younger and have so much more energy!” Greg has met and surpassed his goal of hitting 220 pounds and reports that “I have more energy, less overall body pain, and no more achy joints. The hardest part is buying a whole new wardrobe!” ❖

These are the words that define C4 Explosive Sports Training in Manassas as well as its owner and founder, Charlie Chandler. “I always felt that in sports and activities, you learn a lot of lessons. When you commit to changing and working hard, you not only develop great character,” he said, “but a champion mentality. Regardless of what the results are, you come out a champion.” C4 is a family owned gym on a mission to create strong bodies and even stronger minds through education and movement in a non-judgmental and family-oriented environment. It is the result of more than two decades of experience and hard work put in by Chandler, a teacher and coach at Patriot High School, who’s dedicated himself to helping others reach their fullest potential. He currently teaches health, drivers education and weight training and has coached football for a combined 13

years, taking five off to stay home with his daughter. After years of training adults and kids in his personal gym or rented spaces, the opportunity to open C4 presented itself two years ago and, in Chandler’s words, “It’s been full steam ahead ever since.” According to Chandler, C4 offers the “Heinz 57® blend” of athletic training. That includes everything from team training, adult one-on-one training and group classes, to athletic performance training for high school and college athletes. It’s the athletic performance training that has turned out to be the cornerstone difference of the gym. In an area flush with a variety of fitness

place and allows members to work out with their favorite trainer from the comfort and safety of their home. And finally, because family and community are paramount to Chandler, he opened C4 to the KUMA Foundation, a local nonprofit that brings science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) education to underserved kids who used it for four weeks as a staging facility while volunteers collected food for those in need. “The gym was full of food and boxes,” he said. “It was a great feeling knowing that through the tough times we could get together and support each other.” While Chandler’s passion for giving back to the community was evident during the pandemic, it certainly didn’t start there. Almost since it opened, C4 has offered scholarships to students who otherwise cannot afford a membership but who are dedicated to furthering their athletic education. In addition, the gym supports several local sports organizations including Brigade Lacrosse, Grizzlies Football, Stonewall Jackson High School, Patriot High
School, and the Victory Lakes swim team. In the two years since it opened, C4 has grown tremendously. In December, the gym moved to a new, larger space where it can accommodate more athletes and offer even more classes and options to clients. It’s a place where members of all ages and stages receive expert training, space to clear their mind, and encouragement to work hard and achieve their goals. It is very much a community committed to creating strong bodies and strong, smart minds. Says Chandler, “It begins with the culture we’ve developed. We get to know each person on an individual basis and we develop a good personal relationship. It’s very much a family feel.” Indeed, his own family, wife Tracy, sons Braden, Christian, and Trent, and daughter Carlie are often in the gym, working with the athletes and demonstrating their dedication to the C4 motto: Change. Work with what you have and break the mold.” Released in August, the song is another addition to the local preteen’s age-appropriate, catchy, upbeat, and positive tunes.
When did you first realize your interest in music?
Growing up I sang and danced along to music all the time. I remember one day when I was six years old, I was looking for a hobby. I had tried playing soccer, but I didn't enjoy it. My dad suggested learning to play the piano and I decided to give it a try. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I immediately fell in love with it! I had three years of piano experience when I started to record my own songs. Now I've

How do you get inspired to write songs?
I'm actually still working on songwriting. My two albums were mostly written by my dad based on experiences I was having. I helped him with the lyrics, and the father of one of my best friends helped with putting everything to music. My dad has taught me a lot about songwriting, and I've taken a few classes to learn more about the process. My latest singles were written by Anna Maze who works with my producer, Mark Henry. I love how current and upbeat her songs are. I

I've been fortunate to continue my piano and guitar lessons virtually which has helped me realize how much I enjoy making music. Some of my dreams for the future include writing my own songs, releasing more music, working with new people in the music industry, and learning how to play a new instrument. I recently got a drum kit and I am excited to experiment with that! One of my biggest dreams is to be able to create a whole song on my own, meaning I would write it, sing it, and play all of the instruments for it. That would be an amazing accomplishment! I'm also hoping to build a following and have more people join my

Personally, I listen to different types of music depending on my mood. Music can make me feel a certain way. For example, I like faster songs to pump me up or when I am feeling happy or excited. I like slower songs when I want to relax or just feel calm. My hope is that other people will feel this same way when they listen to my songs. My lyrics all have messages that I hope people can connect with in some way. My latest song called Lemonade is about looking for the positives in things even if that's not always easy.
What artists influence you?
Growing up, I've been exposed to a lot of different genres of music. I think my main influencers are female artists who write, play, and sing their own songs. As I said earlier, that is a goal that I have for myself one day, and it's much harder than it looks! Some specific artists that have influenced me are Kacey Musgraves, Brynn Elliott, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez. As you can tell, my favorite genre is pop! ❖

The Boundary Breaks for Riesling BY MARK LUNA
I
n last month’s column on classic grapes, I mentioned (in passing) a few notable stars that easily qualify for the category, but whose stature perhaps falls a mere cluster under the trellis top of global recognition and, for that matter, wine grape dominance. Of course, these things are debatable, especially from those whose treasured wines consist of said notable stars; namely merlot, cabernet franc and syrah, as well as chenin blanc and riesling. Wait, what? Riesling?! Yeah, you heard me…riesling. The acclaimed British wine critic and German wine expert, Stuart Pigott once wrote, “Riesling has long been favoured by wine connoisseurs as the aristocrat of white wines.” He’s absolutely right. But, for those wine fans who don’t view themselves as such, yet do appreciate what a cool-climate grape like riesling has to offer in terms of style, finesse and subtlety, they too would agree. You’d be hard-pressed to find a grape that possesses the range riesling does, from absolutely bone-dry bottlings to luscious, viscous dessert

Australia, New Zealand, parts of South America and of course, the United States, most notably in Washington and New York State, specifically, the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. It is there, along the east-central shores of Seneca Lake, the deepest of all eleven lakes, where Boundary Breaks Vineyard is located. Husband and wife team and co-owners, Bruce Murray and Diana Lyttle started Boundary Breaks just over a decade ago, on a 120-acre family farm purchased by Bruce in 2007. The first plantings were in 2009 and first release was 2013. A mutual love of riesling and the Finger Lakes area, both Bruce and Diana are native upstate New Yorkers, was the impetus for Boundary Breaks Vineyard. As for the wines… If you’re looking for an approachable, crowd-pleasing, everyday riesling, then you have to open a bottle of Boundary Breaks Ovid Line North 2018 Riesling. This is Boundary Breaks core bottling, medium-dry, with 11% ABV and a very modest amount of residual sugar. Rich in both tropical and citrus fruits, its acidity can carve for days. With additional hints of strawberry and honeysuckle, OLN 2018 is a fun wine, lively and fresh, yet perfectly balanced for its intended style. Delicious on its own, yet certainly ready for an array of light culinary fare. Priced well under $20, it’s very affordable, but not a ‘cheapy’ riesling…value wins here. For those who have enjoyed the endless wonders of a great dry riesling, you have my word that the Boundary Breaks 2018 vintage of Riesling Dry #239 is a wine you must have. For me, dry is how riesling truly shines. While its fruit characteristic is up front and stony in nature, there’s enough old-world hints of petrol and glycerin to really take you back in time. The weight is ample and the finish never ends. The number 239 is a clone number, given to this particular variation of the riesling grape; and of the various clonal choices available to plant, #239 is well suited for the Seneca Lake environment and marked by both its acidic nature and dryness. To add to the stature of this wine, Wine Enthusiast

Magazine has twice named Riesling Dry #239 to its list of Top 100 Wines in the World, and previous vintages have consistently received 90+ point scores. And while I don’t always hang my hat on scores, landing a spot on this list deserves recognition, and the wine itself deserves one’s full respect and attention. Priced in the low $20s, it’s a steal. And finally, riesling as dessert… Ice Wine is a dessert wine made from grapes that are left in the vineyard after harvest, into the winter season, to dehydrate under the rays of the sun. With temperatures often reaching 15 degrees Fahrenheit (or lower), any water that’s left in the berries turns to ice. These dehydrated grapes/ raisins give the Ice Wine juice an earthier, honey-flavored quality, which is a hallmark characteristic of this wine. The most famous and expensive Ice Wines are produced in Germany; and Canada is also highly touted for their precious bottlings as well, where their use of the Vidal grape is quite reputable. In the United States, predictably enough perhaps, New York is also a producer of fine Ice Wine…Cue Boundary Breaks Riesling Ice Wine 2019. As mentioned earlier, Seneca Lake is the deepest of the Finger Lakes, pushing 700 feet deep at its core. Because of this depth, it actually does NOT freeze; however, air temperatures commonly drop well below freezing, and this coupling of low air temps with moderating lake influence produce a very unique micro-climate, conducive to great Ice Wine. Rich with honey tones and viscous caramel, Riesling Ice Wine 2019 is a gorgeous wine. There’s no loss of acidity, so you know it’s true riesling, but the textural elements really surprise here and the unexpected balance is superb. This has winter written all over it, but I would absolutely drink it all year round. It’s priced in the $60s, reflective of its superior quality and limited production and it’s worth every dollar. Get to know the wines of Finger Lakes and start at Boundary Breaks. To quote Pigott one last time, “Boundary Breaks belongs in the first league of North American Riesling producers.” I hope we all have a safe 2021, and here’s to a wonderful year of wonderful wine.
