appy New Year! Because the new year is the perfect time to change things up, we’ve done just that. Your favorite community magazine is sporting neat, new type treatments and a fresh, fun new logo. We hope you like our new look. Of course, one thing we’ll never change is our commitment to celebrating you: Your amazing kids, local heroes, talented neighbors, favorite businesses, generous friends, beloved community leaders, and more, much more. In this issue you’ll meet Justin Brown, a young man who didn’t simply graduate from Battlefield High, he skyrocketed out of there with all kinds of honors, accolades, and 51 credits toward his associate degree. Pretty amazing kid, huh? You’ll also meet wildlife rescuer, Olivia LoBalbo. She and her team save and rehabilitate possums, foxes, groundhogs, turtles, frogs, snakes, birds, and squirrels. It can take as long as a year, she says, to get an animal healthy enough to return to its habitat. But it brings her tremendous joy to call the person who brought the animal in and say, “Hey remember that turtle you dropped off ? You can come get him now.” Now that’s what I call a local hero. And let me not forget Alli Bohls and Cammi Fairbanks, owners of the new and noteworthy Crumbl Cookies in Bristow, and Taria Ramos, the “allergy baker” whose Gainesville shop, Inspired Cravings, creates treats those with food allergies can enjoy to their heart’s (and their health’s) delight. These are just a few of the people in our community we’re honored to celebrate. I’m certain you know others so, please, drop me a note at susan@whglifestyle.com, so we can share their stories, too. Until next month, happy reading and warm wishes for a wonderful 2022!

Pro Tip: When undertaking a renovation, it’s wise to reserve 20-30% in a contingency fund in the event an unforeseeable expense pops up. Better to have it and not need it than the opposite.

Design 101:

Our kitchen is terribly dark and we can’t add more windows. What else can we do?

Everyone’s Favorite Room — the Kitchen BY YARON LINETT

Natural light is ideal, but even the kitchen with the best exposure will be dark at night. Good general lighting and task lighting are a necessity in any kitchen. As for maximizing the natural light you do have, clean windows with window treatments that “preserve the glass” will allow in what light there is. Once that light enters, bounce it around the room with a higher sheen paint and cleverly placed mirrors.

Pro Tip: Paint with a high “LRV,” or Light Reflective Value, is better at bouncing light than absorbing it. Check with your supplier to help guide your decision. We have five rescue dogs that reside in the kitchen. How can we take their needs into account? When building a banquette, consider turning the underseat area into a series of cubbies or “dens,” so each dog can have their own spot. Besides, every dog we know loves to be close to where dropped food might fall.

Pro Tip: When designing for pets we like to use vinyl floor

cloths beneath their bowls to make spills easy to clean and provide another layer of protection for the floor.

We saw beautiful open shelves in our favorite restaurant. Could we include something like that?

Of course. Open shelving could be a big savings over adding traditional cabinets, but there are a few things to consider. Grease and dust will settle on anything that is on those shelves, so a good hood to remove airborne grease and a strict cleaning rotation for the rest is imperative. Next, remember to make sure there is plenty of space to hide the less than picturesque necessities.

Pro Tip: Decorative hardware for open shelves will draw a lot of focus, so splurge on the brackets and save on the shelf itself. When it’s covered with dishes the front face and hardware is the most anyone will see. We love antiques and repurposed furniture, is there a way we could incorporate them?

W

elcome back and Happy New Year! This month we go in depth answering a series of questions from a lovely couple looking for a revamp of their aging kitchen. Five rescue dogs, a taste for rescued furniture, and a rather dark home make for a unique challenge, but fear not. Answers abound.

We want to renovate our kitchen on a budget. How much should we set aside? There are too many variables to give a precise number, but in general the average homeowner spends 60-80K on a kitchen remodel. Cabinets can consume as much as 50% of the budget, and relocating water, gas or electrical often adds significant additional expense and complication. A kitchen and bath professional can help you manage those expenses and ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

It will take a little more planning and vision, but certainly you could use vintage and antique pieces. Our best recommendation is to have every piece measured (or scanned) and then insist on seeing elevations/renderings in advance. Don’t let your contractor figure it out “on game day.”

Pro Tip: Lead paint was extremely prevalent until banned in the 70’s. A quick and inexpensive test kit can tell you whether or not you want that antique piece anywhere near your food.

When and why did you decide to start this business?

meet&greet

Sandra (Sandy) Surabian

I decided to branch out on my own and start this firm in December of 2009. I wanted the ability to work directly with my clients.

How does your business serve the local community?

We work with both individuals and clients in the community to not only help with tax compliance but also with tax planning. I would like to say that we are partnering with our clients to help them succeed.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession.

I feel the most satisfaction when I am able to alleviate a client’s fears about owing the IRS and help them make a plan to stay in control.

Tell us about your experience with HGBA.

I joined HGBA 8 or 9 years ago. I have attended the monthly meetings but this last year, I decided to get more involved and have been having fun being on the board.

How has it supported you and your business?

Surabian PC

The casual atmosphere of the monthly meetings has allowed me to meet other business owners and discuss issues that affect me as a small business owner.

14535 JOHN MARSHALL HWY, STE 102, GAINESVILLE

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?

703-335-1040 SANDRA.SURABIAN@CPA.COM SURABIANPC.COM

1.Do the project that you dread the most first thing in the morning and the rest of the day is better. 2. Plan your week out on Sunday, starting with your personal time and fitting your business around it. 3. Don't be afraid to make mistakes but own up to them when you do.

Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?

I am not from here; I grew up in a military family and then was in the Air Force myself. We moved to the area because my husband got a job here. We love the small town atmosphere with access to the big town. Plus the weather is pleasant!

What is your favorite season in this area, and why?

I like the Fall. We get warm days and cool days, the colors are beautiful and, in my profession, we slow down.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy hiking, gardening, anything outside.

Are you involved with any nonprofits?

I sit on the board of Bull Run Mountains Conservancy because their mission of education and stewardship of our natural resources is really important to me.

What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job was a navigator in the AirForce. I navigated on a radar plane and traveled around the world.

The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area. The Power of Library Outreach: Put it to Use at Your Community Event! BY JESSIE SCALPH, BRANCH ADMINISTRATOR, HAYMARKET GAINESVILLE LIBRARY

P

rince William Public Libraries (PWPL) serves the nearly 500,000 residents of Prince William County, the City of Manassas, and surrounding jurisdictions. For many years, PWPL has reached out to citizens within the community to offer support and services by participating in various events, community festivals, school visits, and community group meetings. PWPL’s Office of Programming and Outreach (OPO) offers new and innovative opportunities for collaboration and partnerships within our county government and with Prince William County Public Schools, Manassas City Public Schools, and homeschools in the area. OPO also coordinates and conducts outreach to local businesses and expands outreach to include bringing the library directly to where people in the community live, work, and play. We talked with Kristen Burnham, OPO Coordinator, and Amy Cunningham, OPO Outreach Specialist, about OPO and its mission:

Can you give us a list of outreach events that OPO has attended or participated in recently?

Some community events include Manassas Fall Jubilee, Haymarket Day, Manassas Reads, and Taste of Woodbridge. Our growing outreach efforts with Prince William County Public Schools, such as teacher in-service workdays, career fairs, back-to-school nights, and library card drives, are extremely valuable in introducing library services and support.

Have these visits led to better partnerships in our community?

Immensely! Outreach helps introduce library programs and services and gives us an opportunity to develop partnerships where these services are needed most. For example, OPO has been involved with the Prince William Reentry Council. Because of this partnership, OPO introduced digital library card access to incarcerated citizens at the Adult Detention Center, who are within three

months of release. Our Digital Library offers career and financial resources, which can be extremely valuable for helping people transition to the next chapter in their lives. Another community partnership is OPO’s work with homeless shelters, including the Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center. This summer, a hybrid program was developed where kids residing at the shelter received free swimming lessons, toured a local library, and were treated to a special story time. We also visit local senior centers regularly. These outreach visits include targeted programs and developing a special collection that programmers deliver to older adults.

What sort of library employees participate in these events?

Employees at all levels and from all branches are encouraged to participate which allows OPO to offer a robust schedule of events in our community. Another advantage of such staff participation is that, through their suggestions, other events and contacts are developed in our community.

What are the future plans for the library’s outreach initiative?

PWPL will continue to develop the library’s outreach services, with the goal of forming a more targeted and focused Outreach department that will be able to devote itself fully to this purpose.

unfetti. Cookies & Cream Milkshake. Pink Velvet. Classic Sugar. Kentucky Butter Cake. Milk Chocolate. Churro. Key Lime Pie. Blueberry Cheesecake. Waffle. These are some of the favorites that have put Crumbl Cookies on the map. With a new location in Bristow, steps away from the Target and T.J. Maxx stores, Crumbl Cookies just became even much more accessible. Co-owner Cami Fairbanks, 33, of Round Hill, discovered Crumbl by chance on a girls trip to Southern Utah three years ago. “My friend said our first stop had to be at ‘this new cookie store’ and after I had my first bite of the Birthday Cake cookie, I have been hooked ever since,” remembers Cami. Cami soon introduced her best friend Alli Bohls, 30, of Aldie, to the cookie craze, and the idea of opening a franchise together followed quickly. “We decided to open a Crumbl franchise because we love the product and the company. The quality of the cookies that we bake fresh daily is unmatched,” says Cami and Alli, who debuted their Bristow storefront early last October. Each week, Crumbl offers a unique selection of cookies, all in their signature pink box. In all, Crumbl has 170+ different flavors, and the easy-to-use Crumbl app keeps fans updated on the weekly flavor offerings. “We have a

With a love of baking, Alli always dreamed of opening her own bakery. She holds a degree in Business Administration, which comes in handy as a new business owner. The two friends compliment each other’s skill sets and are excited for their Crumbl business venture. “Both of us are moms and we have seven kids between the two of us! Motherhood will always be our #1 priority, but these amazing cookies are a close second.” The Bristow Crumbl’s open-concept kitchen allows customers to watch the cookie-making process firsthand. “When you enter our store, not only is it beautiful, modern and clean, but you get to see everything happening right in front of you,” say Cami and Alli. “You get to watch the dough being mixed, smell the freshly baked cookies come out of the oven and watch our expert dressing team dress the cookies to perfection. From the moment you walk in, you are part of our Crumbl family, and we will strive to keep it this way by providing a very immersive and caring customer experience.” The Crumbl cookies are sold in a single box, 4 pack, 6 pack, and a party box of one dozen cookies. No SetBacks: Haymarket’s Justin Brown is Unstoppable BY FRANNIE BARNES PHOTOS BY HOUSE OF AMSTEL

W

hile it would be true to say that Justin William Brown graduated from Battlefield High School last June, it would also be an understatement. Brown didn’t just graduate. He rocketed out of high school departing Magna Cum Laude, a gold medal graduate of the CASIIT program, with 51 college credits toward his associate degree in information technology from Northern Virginia Community College under his belt. Plus, he’s a world champion archer. He also happens to be legally blind in his right eye, so when the pandemic brought virtual learning into students’ lives, it foiled Justin’s plans to complete that degree and receive it upon graduation. Staring at a computer screen for too long gives Justin double vision. As a result, the Haymarket resident had to make the difficult decision to postpone his two remaining courses until after leaving Battlefield. But Justin is no stranger to making difficult decisions. “Life has never been easy for Justin, but he never complains,” his mom, Kori said. In 2005, when he was just two years old, Justin was diagnosed with brain cancer and a very destructive brain tumor called a craniopharyngioma. This tumor is malignant by location. Radiation wasn’t a viable option for his young, growing brain, so each time his tumor grew, he had to have

another surgery to remove it. As a toddler, Justin had three craniotomy surgeries which totaled more than 45 hours in the operating room. Justin began radiation prior to Kindergarten, which delayed his elementary school start. It is surprising to learn that a kid who graduated with 51 additional credits started school late, but an ambitious child, he caught up quickly. The Brown family moved to Boston for more than eight weeks so he could receive a new type of radiation which, at the time, was available in very few locations. Despite his numerous health challenges, such as adrenal insufficiency, panhypopituitarism, a growth hormone deficiency, diabetes insipidus and being immune deficient, Justin has never said no to trying something new. In his formative years, Justin played sports. Baseball and basketball were his favorites, and he was quite good

at both. He played until his constant joint pain became unbearable. Another difficult decision he had to make at a young age – walking away from something that brought him much joy. He loves sports and did not want to give up playing on a team. When he was in 6th grade, he had the opportunity to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and play for the Reagan Middle School Archery team. Archery provided the sports team he wanted to be part of, and he was able to get up, shoot, and return to his seat which eliminated long periods on his feet and alleviated his pain. And, not surprisingly, he was pretty darned good at it too! When he left middle school and started Battlefield High School, there was not yet an archery team. der his wing, started a club and soon after a team. Justin played on the team throughout high school. Coach Bukva said, “It has been a privilege to coach Justin over the years and watch him grow as a person and an archer. He used to stand up to my shoulder and now he stands six inches above me. Determination and perseverance are two words that define Justin. Those words are lost on many young people these days, but not him.” During Justin’s time as an archer on the Battlefield team, he and his team became world champions. Justin earned many personal and team medals and he’s very proud of his large world championship ring. Justin now stands at six feet, six inches, a formidable stature and his mom describes him as a “gentle giant.” One of four boys, he is a quiet, sweet and kind person, who always puts others before himself and would do anything for anyone. Justin is always participating in a group or sport. While he is not currently on an archery team, he is passionate about Pokémon. And we’re not talking about merely collecting and trading cards, either. Pokémon is a highly strategic card game that requires skill and well thought out tactics. He has been asked to be a judge and to monitor games and he even runs online tournaments through the Fantastic Store in Chantilly. At a recent Prince William County School Board meeting, Justin was honored by Gainesville District school board member, Jennifer Wall, for his many amazing accomplishments. Some might think that narrowly missing the credits required to earn his associate degree in information technology – along with his high school diploma – would be a setback, but not Justin. He’s approached it in his usual, easy going way. This fall, he plans to attend George Washington University, 51 credits ahead of the game, to get his bachelor’s degree.

For the Love of Animals Gainesville’s Olivia LoBalbo wants to change how people look at wildlife BY ANALIESE KREUTZER

hile growing up, Olivia LoBalbo liked playing in the woods and bringing home turtles, frogs, and baby birds. When she grew up, her love of animals led her to work in vet clinics, but eventually, she realized her true calling was to work with wildlife. "People would bring wild animals into our vet clinics, and nobody really knew what to do with them. Often, they were euthanized, and I thought this couldn't be the only option," said LoBalbo, who lives in Gainesville. She sought out a

network of wildlife rehabilitators and became certified. In 2013, she founded the nonprofit Animal Education and Rescue Organization (AERO) to help rescue, rehabilitate, and release native wildlife who are sick, injured, or orphaned. AERO is a small, all-volunteer organization made up of people like LoBalbo who are dedicated to working with Virginia’s wildlife. The work is rewarding, but some cases are harder than others. “Not all the animals survive,” said LoBalbo. “The most memorable cases are those that come full cir-

One of AERO's goals is to make it easier for people to become wildlife rehabbers and get the training they need. Next year, in addition to its two new rehabbers, AERO will have 20 apprentices and 10 caregivers. When LoBalbo first decided to become a wildlife rehabilitator, she discovered that the certification process was challenging. It requires a two-year apprenticeship and 200 hours of hands-on work. "I discovered that rehabbers are busy people, and they aren't always willing to take on apprentices. They believe it's easier to do it themselves than to train someone," she said. "We really wanted to focus on the education of new rehabbers. We also wanted to get people involved and change the way people look at wildlife." AERO’s rehabbers get contacted directly by people who find animals as well as by veterinarians. At any time, LaBalbo or one of her colleagues could receive a call about an animal. “If it’s a wildlife emergency, the best thing to do is try to contact a rehabilitator directly to get the animal help quickly," said LaBalbo.

The most memorable cases are those that come full circle, when we’re able to take the animals in, rehabilitate them, and release them with the person who found them.

cle, when we’re able to take the animals in, rehabilitate them, and release them with the person who found them. Box turtles will come in completely crushed from a car, and we work with vets to place their shells and get them the medication they need. It sometimes takes six months to a year to rehabilitate them. So a year later, we contact the people who brought the turtle in and say, 'Hey, do you remember that turtle you brought in? It's ready for release.' The people who rescued the turtle can pick it up and release it back where it came from.” LoBalbo tries to keep the people who rescue the animals up to date with posts on the AERO website and Facebook page, but it isn't easy with so many animals. In 2020, she and her colleagues rescued 1,010 animals, a number she expects will double next year when AERO grows from three rehabbers to five.

LoBalbo mending an injured box turtle’s shell (top) and feeding a northern long-eared bat (bottom).

AERO rescues and rehabilitates all kinds of native animals, including foxes, groundhogs, squirrels, turtles, frogs, snakes, birds, and more. Some animals they legally can't take, like coyotes and deer older than fawns, because they are considered nuisance animals. AERO’s volunteers also do not rehabilitate raptors, such as hawks and eagles. However, they will take them in and stabilize them before transferring them to others for care. This year, LoBalbo worked with bats for the first time. "I got a northern long-eared bat, which is an endangered species. It was found in a campground, and the owner said we could come and do whatever we needed to do to make the area safe for these bats," said LoBalbo. “We inspected the campground and made a month-by-month directory of what the owners could do and avoid doing to help the animals.” Her recommendations included not removing trees in the middle of fall when the bats are mating and not spraying pesticides, which stick to the bats. “It’s very rewarding getting to spend time with the animals, especially when the process comes full circle and we’re able to get those animals back out,” said LoBalbo. “It feels good.” AERO Needs Your Help A nonprofit volunteer-only organization, AERO relies 100 percent on donations to provide the food, shelter, and veterinary care the animals need while they recover. Whatever donations don’t cover, the rehabbers and apprentices pay for out of their own pockets. To make a tax-deductible monetary donation or a supply donation via AERO’s Amazon wishlist, visit the organization’s website at AEROAnimalRescue.org.

One Part Inspiration, Two Parts Dedication: The perfect recipe for success

BY FRANNIE BARNES PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

nspiration can come from many places. For Taria Ramos of Gainesville, it came from her heart – her daughters. When her three daughters were young, she learned that one had a food intolerance to dairy and another was allergic to eggs and also had Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition in which the body cannot properly digest gluten which can lead to damage to the small intestine. Learning to navigate not only a gluten-free diet, but also a dairy- and egg-free diet, wasn’t easy, but Taria doesn’t shy away from a challenge. She poured herself into learning how to feed her daughters healthy food while also providing them with treats that all kids love but are difficult to find for those with food intolerances. Around the same time, Taria became a vegan, as it allowed her to transition easily to a diet without dairy and eggs. She also began baking gluten-free treats. Her cupcakes quickly earned her a reputation as an “allergy baker.” She would bring them to work, where they would be scooped up by colleagues. A former government executive who worked with troubled youth, Taria would bring cupcakes to youth detention centers and use them as a tool to counsel teens on how to make better choices and build a toolbox to transcend their

circumstances. They would talk while decorating the cakes and the conversations consisted of tough questions made more palatable with the help of her sweets. She would ask the kids, “Okay, this happened to you, what can you do now to get your mindset to change and get you what you need?” The cupcake represented the child, and the decorations represented the inspiration and good choices they would make for their lives and their bodies. At the end of each session, the kids would eat their thoughtfully decorated cupcakes, taking the meaning of the phrase, “You are what you eat” to a whole new level. As word of her delicious creations grew, Taria took ker show on the road. She purchased a food truck, stocked it with vegan, allergy- and gluten-free cupcakes, and drove into DC and surrounding suburbs where she quickly sold out. The truck, and Taria’s treats were a hit and she soon gained the attention of the DC culinary community and such celebrities as Martha Stewart and Steve Harvey. She was featured in Cooking Light and Health magazines, and was recognized by both the James Beard Foundation and No Kid Hungry, the popular Fit Foodie event in Fairfax.

As the Inspired Cravings food truck continued to gain momentum, Taria opened a brick-and-mortar bakery in December 2019 in the Madison Crescent shopping center in Gainesville. Four months later, COVID-19 presented its challenges, but Inspired Creations has survived and is thriving due not only to the community she has built, but the local community as well. Other bakeries that don’t offer gluten or allergy free products refer customers to her. “There is enough room in this industry for everyone who bakes,” Taria said. “I always feel like the universe is abundant.” At present, Inspired Cravings is the premier bakery servicing all of Prince William County and Northern Virginia schools as its baked goods are free of the nation’s top 8 allergies. Every ingredient used in Inspired Cravings is purposefully chosen. All baked items are vegan; dairy-free, eggfree, and cruelty-free but certainly delicious! On any given day, 24 flavors are offered. The ingredients are few and simple, but they’re creatively and safely crafted. Taria only chooses high-quality natural ingredients, avoiding preservatives. The bakery also avoids oat and almond flour, as those are high in allergens. (However, oat and almond milks are offered for coffees and lattes.) The bakery is also soy, peanut, tree nut, legume and seed free. When you walk into the bakery, there are rolls of brown paper on the wall along with markers for patrons to share their inspirations. Taria has received notes from parents and children telling her how happy they are to have the ability to enjoy sweets that were previously off limits. “Every day I’m in shock to know that we are helping so many. I didn’t know we would be on this path. I just thought it was important to share this small gift of celebration with others,” Taria said. Inspired Cravings has received recognitions such as the Top 100 Women in Allergy from Spokin, and PETA has recognized them as the only dedicated vegan organization in Prince William County. They also hold the title of the only dedicated vegan coffee shop within 150 miles of Washington DC. “People with food allergies often don't feel well and are looking for a smile,” Taria said. Who knew that cake could serve such a purpose?

Located at 8051 Ashton Avenue, the 25,000 square-foot building will be renovated to include a new makerspace featuring new technology and craft tools and equipment, an additional quiet study room for a total of two reservable meeting rooms available to the public, updated children and young adult areas and a new dedicated tween area, an open floor plan, and new, café style seating. While the library is closed, the book drop will remain open and any books placed on hold at Bull Run Library will be sent to Central Library to be picked up.

Or take the tree and greenery to one of these locations to be recycled: The Prince William County Landfill, 14811 Dumfries Road, Manassas. Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Closed New Year's Day. The Balls Ford Road Compost Facility, 13000 Balls Ford Road, Manassas. Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Closed New Year's Day. Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC), 5399 Wellington Branch Road, Gainesville. NOVEC will accept greenery from December 26 to January 9. The drop off area is in the front parking lot in the space outlined with orange safety cones.
