from the E D I T O R Isn’t it great to be able to travel, dine out, and hear live music again? We think so too, and it’s the reason this issue includes a profile of sushi hotspot Akasaka Restaurant, a look at where to find your favorite local bands this summer, and a terrific itinerary for a three-day escape to Madison County. On top of that, (because what’s a getaway with a good book?), you’ll find a profile of local author Charles Price. His new book, The Council: A Few Came Together to Become the Manifestation of Justice, is out now and getting wonderful reviews. And finally, please join us in celebrating the winners of Lifestyle’s first-ever Cutest Kid contest. Our first place winners, Chizaram and Emerson, are simply adorable, and our second and third place winners are pretty darn cute, too! Thank you so much for all your submissions and for voting, and a huge thank you to our sponsor, Piedmont Family Practice. It’s a delight to feature our local little ones whose smiles bring a smile to all our faces. Until next month, enjoy the summer and happy reading!

BY YARON LINETT Updating the yard and the grounds surrounding a home is one of the top projects homeowners undertake every summer. Of course, not everyone is a landscaping or hardscaping expert, so this month we answer some of your questions about both those tasks.
I HAVE WATER ISSUES WITH MY LAWN, HOW CAN I ADDRESS THEM? If you mean you have too much water, you could have an issue with grading or drainage. This might be fixed as easily as extending your downspouts or could be as elaborate as significant foundation work and installing French drains. If your house has a septic system it could potentially have drainage field issues. However, if your issue is not enough water, then an irrigation system might be in order. Regardless of the concern, most of these issues are fairly routine for the appropriate professional to diagnose and put together a plan of action to address them.

Root infiltration is no small issue when it comes to pipes. Remember that experiment from elementary school where the class planted seeds in concrete? PRO TIP
WE WERE THINKING ABOUT HARDSCAPING WITH SLATE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? We recently had a client who wanted to use slate in her backyard for a large patio and platform-style steps. While beautiful, we worried about the loss of traction that she would face when water or ice were present. Ultimately a paver in a similar look with a more favorable slip coefficient won out. It also didn’t hurt that it reduced
the materials cost by more than 60%. If you are open to alternate options, another product we highly encourage you to consider is stamped concrete. Just about anything you want can be mimicked in stamped concrete if your installer is talented enough. PRO TIP
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD CONSIDER AS WE PLAN OUR HARDSCAPING PROJECT? Clearly you will want to invite friends over to enjoy your new digs, and when you invariably lose track of time you will be thankful that you thought to include

path and stair lighting to help guide them safely around the house and back to their cars. You might also add a few well thought out accent lights highlighting your plantings along the way. Light pollution is a serious problem, so consider using dark sky compliant lighting. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you will be saving on energy costs as well. PRO TIP
WHEN WE SELECT FLORA FOR THE YARD WHAT SHOULD WE KEEP IN MIND? Our preference is always to use native species over invasive ones, and low maintenance options
certainly don’t hurt those of us with limited time or skill. The largest consideration for most of our clients however comes down to what is deer resistant. And while you can look up deer resistant plants per state, the hungrier the deer the less it seems to care about what it’s not supposed to want to eat. Just as we recommend a consultation with an Interior Designer for most projects, so too do we recommend one with a landscape architect for this one. It is always better to admit you don’t know what you don’t know. PRO TIP
I KNOW I WANT TO MAKE CHANGES TO OUR YARD BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO BEGIN OR HOW TO DESCRIBE WHAT I WANT. The first step in our process always involves our clients imagining the experience they want to have in the space. From there, a professional should be able to help determine what’s needed to create the environment that will provide that experience. Good questions to consider when envisioning the final use include how many people will occupy the space at a given time, and are there any accommodations that need to be made for accessibility. PRO TIP

WHAT DO YOU THINK? It’s an odd thing, sometimes what we think or feel about something is the exact opposite of how it really is. This is especially true of God -- most times we think we are separated from Him or that He doesn’t love us or maybe He doesn’t know we even exist. At one time we were separated from God but Jesus has changed all that! And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. – Romans 8:38 Visit your local church to hear about Jesus, the One who has bridged the gap for us.

A Passion for Helping the Community Gets Put to Work New staffing service looks to partner with businesses and employees BY ANALIESE KREUTZER PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
Y
ou may have noticed a new storefront recently next to Ethel’s New York Deli on Washington Street in Haymarket. The local franchise of Spherion Staffing and Recruiting is the latest venture of Kathleen Geneva, known to many locals as the owner of the Western Prince William County chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions. “I can’t wait for us to become a community partner, working with local businesses that are challenged to find the right quality candidate and helping local job seekers find opportunities. I want it to be a true collaboration,” said Geneva. She began her career in staffing right after college, working for a small firm in Washington, DC, and she fell in love with it. “Staffing is not for everyone, because it’s very fast-paced,” Geneva said, “but what I loved the most was the people. I loved helping people find their jobs, and I loved working with the clients to help them find a solution.” She started as a staffing coordinator with Norrell and learned all of the different nuances to running a staffing and recruiting business as she worked her way up to the vice president level before leaving to stay home and raise her family. Geneva always felt she would go back to work, but she wasn’t sure in what capacity.

{ JULY 2021 |
Then, when her son was in middle school and she was looking for an etiquette class for him, she found the National League of Junior Cotillions. Unfortunately, there was no chapter near her. When she inquired about it, she was told that they are franchised positions. That was nine years ago, and she has been running the local chapter ever since.
HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

She has assistance with the administration of the Cotillion program, but she plans to continue teaching the evening classes two nights a week. “Many of these children have been with me for years. I love to teach, and registration is booming right now with students signing up for next fall,” Geneva said. “We had to pause the program because of COVID, but I can’t wait to get started again in the fall.”
Wakefield School Class of 2021
Despite her enthusiasm for Cotillion, it has been a part time job, and with word-ofmouth largely driving registrations, there isn’t much she has to do. Her children are older—her daughter is in ninth grade and her son is a senior in high school—and she wanted a new challenge. “I called the company I used to work for and asked them what’s going on in staffing, and if someone wanted to come back, would they be open to that. I told them where I live, and they said they heard it’s exploding in job growth,” said Geneva. Norrell had since become a part of the larger Spherion company. They saw the need for an office here and suggested she set one up.
Meeting a Growing Need Business is booming in Prince William County, and so is the need for qualified workers. “Staffing is very different from recruiting and headhunting.” Geneva said.
Geneva started as a staffing coordinator with Norrell (now part of Spherion), and learned all of the different nuances to running a staffing and recruiting business as she worked her way up to the vice president level before leaving to stay home and raise her family.
“We need to get people back to work and regain their confidence. I hope that we can create some programs and get people back to feeling good about what they can offer in a new position or a new career. That’s what I’m excited about.” “An employment agency is going to find you a permanent job. A staffing agency works with clients to staff their workforce solutions. That could be short-term, projectbased needs, seasonal workers, interns, college graduates, or high school graduates.” Businesses use staffing firms as a creative solution for their workforce needs. Spherion charges a fee to the businesses, then hires and pays the employees and is responsible for getting them set up with the client. Geneva sees lots of opportunities in the County. “I foresee a huge increase in contingent staffing in Prince William County. There is a lot of ecommerce here, and a lot of businesses are moving here because it

has easy access to trucking routes,” she said. She is excited to begin programs for people relaunching into the workforce, veterans, college students looking for temporary-topermanent placements, and more. About the post-COVID job market, she said, “We need to get people back to work and regain their confidence. I hope that we can create some programs and get people back to feeling good about what they can offer in a new position or a new career. That’s what I’m excited about.” Geneva’s infectious energy and enthusiasm are a perfect fit for her new undertaking. “Being raised in a military family where you have to move around a lot

and adjust and adapt quickly, taught me a lot about being enthusiastic, because if you don’t get out there and make new friends, you’re never going to have any friends. It taught me to reach out and connect and engage,” she said. “With this new venture, bringing staffing and jobs and livelihoods back to people is really making me happy about spending my time in a meaningful way for the community.” Contact the Local Spherion Office 571-765-3355 • Spherion.com Facebook: @spherionprincewilliam Email: KathleenGeneva@spherion.com LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ spherionprincewilliamcounty

Haymarket’s first place winner is the adorable Chizaram Ekoh, a sweet, special young lady who loves making people smile. Said her mom, Elizabeth Ekoh, “Chizaram, or Zara as we fondly call her, loves to read and sing, loves ballet, loves to swim, loves unicorns, loves playing with her baby sister and she loves her family and God. Zara will always smile when she sees that everyone around her is good and happy. For example, when her baby sister feels sad, Zara always looks for a way to make her smile. She smiles too when the tooth fairy comes visiting and she's always smiling when she talks to family members over the phone, especially her grandma. She’s also a smart and delightful little girl. Since she was three years old, Zara has said that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. When anyone in the family gets hurt, she’s quick to get the first aid kit. She constantly plays the role of doctor. Her dad, Dr. Ekoh, is an orthodontist at TEEM Orthodontics in Gainesville, so that has definitely influenced her. She just loves to make sure that everyone around her feels ok and that no one has a booboo!”

Local author Charles Price encourages everyone to help heal the growing racial divide. BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
n April, ex-officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all three charges for killing George Floyd. Over a year ago, Floyd’s words “I can’t breathe,” sent shockwaves around the world. The event set off massive nationwide protests and riots, and illustrated a chilling depiction of what Black Americans have long suffered at the hands of law enforcement. In the months leading up to Chauvin’s trial, and the months since, it has been made clear that there is a growing racial divide in the United States. Charles Price, a local African American author from Manassas, released The Council: A Few Came Together to Become the Manifestation of Justice on June 19th, ‘Juneteenth,’ in hopes that it would provide insight as to how people unify in trying times and be a catalyst of conversation to inspire true healing. 'The Council' is centered around Nat Turner’s 1831 insurrection in Virginia and is a vivid, historically-based depiction of what impact this event would have had on America if the outcome was different. “This is a historical fiction novel where I spent six months diving into history centered around Nat Turner's insurrection, the political angst, and the community unrest,” Price said. “Included in my research was interviewing a descendant of slave owner Salathiel Francis, who was killed by Nat Turner's army. The interview provided outstanding accounts, family insight, political understanding, and emotional depth to the insurrection.” Price said that this book had been on his heart for a long time, having started it around 2015. “Some of the killings that happened particularly Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, and Philando Castile - hit me pretty hard. It feels like I'm sharing a piece of myself with people. It caused me to go back in time.”
18
{ JULY 2021 |
Charles has always been interested in history, Black history in particular. “When I was a kid, I loved water guns. I found out the water gun was invented by a Black man, Lonnie Johnson,” Price said. “I started reading about all of these contributions and all of the ways that Black people have contributed to American history. It helped me understand that despite our beginnings in America, we still made it a point to make contributions. We always have something to contribute through our work ethic and our creativity.” Charles, who grew up in Woodbridge, has witnessed, and experienced, prejudice since he was young. “I had racial problems in my neighborhood growing up as a kid. When I was pulled over for the first time, I was driving home from a party. I was with my friend, who was white, and the cop got aggressive with me for no reason. I included some of the experiences like this that my friends and I have gone through in the book.

The Black community has suffered a lot. If the goal is reconciliation and moving forward collectively as a nation, we all need to be heard. All voices need to be heard.” In light of the growing racial divide, Price felt this type of book could provide a sense of understanding of the African American remnant pain to the past, provide insight as to how people unify in trying times and serve as a testament to the importance of love, compassion, faith, and true unity. “The story isn’t about black people coming into power to somehow seek revenge; it’s about allowing us to come into our power and acknowledge what we’ve been through. My hope and my prayer is that it will showcase the need for empathy so that we can all heal.“ The Council: A Few Came Together to Become the Manifestation of Justice is available on Amazon. Three Days in Madison County The County’s Enticing Highlights Beckon BY NANCY BAUER
I
f you’ve spent time exploring Virginia Wine Country, it’s likely you’ve met Madison County, maybe without even knowing it: her farmlands fall on either side of Route 29, the road between Charlottesville and Northern Virginia, and her western flank edges up the slopes of Shenandoah National Park. The county’s five wineries are as different as the wines they craft, and each tells a unique story, from the quest of a billionaire owner committed to shining a light on the state’s vinicultural stars to the earnest eco-practices of one of Virginia’s tiniest wineries. This casual, three-day retreat is built around Madison’s wineries, though any traveler with a taste for backroad exploration will find plenty here to like. Wear your sneakers, but toss the stilettos in the back, just in case.

Day One Arrive mid-day and check in at the Madison County Visitor's Center (110 N. Main Street, Madison) for maps and breaking news, then make a beeline for a made-from-scratch lunch at the Café at Yoder’s Country Market, which is owned by a very industrious family from the local Mennonite community. Pick up some baked goods – maybe a few hand-held fry pies, shoofly pie, or German chocolate cupcakes - to snack on later or to stash for breakfast tomorrow morning. Picnic outside at the tables hewn by Amish and Mennonite craftsmen (available for purchase), then take a stroll through the petting zoo, which gives you peeks at everything from alpaca to exotic

fowl to potbellied pigs. Take Rt. 29 North to “downtown” Madison and stroll the shops on Main Street like SheShe, an upscale consignment shop. Just outside of town, be sure to stop in at Clore Furniture. The showroom features handcrafted early American style furniture that is prized up and down the East Coast. Head back to Rt. 29 North to reach Prince Michel Vineyards and Winery. The big oval bar in the tasting room can handle dozens of visitors – fun for peoplewatching – and a huge array of wine merchandise ranging from kitschy to clever helps fill those waiting-forthe-next-pour moments. After your tasting, take a self-guided tour along
the catwalk overlooking the wine production area below, where all the magic happens. Or call ahead to arrange for a personal guided tour or private barrel tasting. There are numerous B&Bs, cabins, and lodges scattered throughout Madison. But for this wine weekend, check in to one of Prince Michel’s luxurious suites located amid vineyards behind the winery. Decorated in French Provincial style, each has its own fireplace, kitchen, and private patio with mountain views. For dinner, a 15-minute drive brings you to Elim at the Inn at Meander Plantation for a truly special meal. The prix-fixe, fourcourse menu can contain such delicious offerings as quail, duck, trout, venison, pork, or seafood, complemented by a flight of four Virginia wines. Seating is at 7:00, sharp.
Day Two Today you’ll discover Madison County’s great outdoors. Take your pick: fishing or horseback riding will fill your morning. At Douglas Dear’s Rose River Farm, Dear has recreated an experience similar to what he found enticing about Colorado and Montana – trophy trout fly fishing in quiet, pristine, surroundings. Tip: For full immersion, book a yurt-style cabin on the property next time you visit. If you opt for horseback riding, head to the stables at Graves Mountain Lodge, where you can ride for as little as an hour or as long as six. The gentle horses wind their way through fields, orchards and woodlands. Cross streams, enjoy the flora and fauna, and notice the quiet. For a traditional down-home lunch at an old-fashioned price, Graves Mountain Lodge serves reasonably-priced family-style allyou-can-eat country ham, catfish, rib-eye, fried chicken, or rainbow trout, depending on the day. A full buffet is served for Saturday dinner or lunch and dinner on Sundays. After dinner, $5 buys you a hay ride and marshmallow roast on Fridays
and Saturdays. After all the physical activity, relax at DuCard Vineyards. Settle down in the warm wood-toned tasting room or slate patio with a bottle of gold-medal Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Rose, or the more unusual Triskele. On selected dates, DuCard also offers a seated tasting, featuring current releases, premium selections and rare library selections along with gourmet food platters to accompany the wines. No reservations are required but check their website for dates. Five miles from DuCard is the county’s newest winery and brewery that opened last July. Blue Quartz Winery is co-located with Shotwell Run Brewing Company, so visitors can sample wines, beers, and cider in the same tasting room. Also relatively new on the scene is Revalation Vineyards, fifteen minutes away heading back toward Route 29. No, not a misspelling, the winery is near the town of Reva, and had its grand opening in March of 2018. The tin-roofed log cabin that serves as the winery’s tasting room has superb views of the nearby mountains. For dinner, try a local institution. Many of Madison’s early settlers came from Germany, and while not an original settler, son Jerome Thalwitz continues in his parents’ footsteps at the Bavarian Chef. Open since 1974, this traditional German restaurant dishes up the best wiener schnitzel (breaded veal in the style of Vienna, nothing to do with hot dogs), and sausages like bratwurst and weisswurst accompanied by the requisite side of sauerkraut, along with pork, chicken, steak, and fish dishes. Servers in traditional Deutsche costumes add to the fun. In case you haven’t had your fill of beer with dinner, a visit to Bald Top Brewery to sample an array of artisan beers is in order. Owners Dave and Julie, along with brewer Mike, source materials locally and grow ingredients on their own farm that are used to craft a full spectrum of delicious beers.
Madison Mainstays
Day Three Sleep in late after the satisfying meal last night, then travel south on Rt. 29 to reach Early Mountain Vineyards. Steve and Jean Case of AOL fame spent two years renovating, updating, and refining the property. The impressive tasting room boasts a comfortable, rustic sophistication with natural stone and wood detailing that recalls the grand lodges of old. Early Mountain 2016 Eluvium red blend achieved one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a Virginia wine: it was named to the Governor’s Case in the Governor’s Cup Wine Competition 2019, a place awarded to the top twelve wines of the year. Early Mountain also does lunch, including fresh, seasonal salads, sandwiches, and dessert. Stay and relax with live music on the weekends. Time permitting, end your Madison County stay by stopping to shop at Plow & Hearth or Southern Grace, on opposite sides of the highway, a two-minute drive down Route 29. Merchandise available through Plow & Hearth’s down-homey catalog is displayed at the retail shop at the rear of the property and includes quilts, bird feeders, trellises, lawn furniture, garden clogs, and much more. The outlet in front is devoted to discontinued and discounted items so you’ll find bargains galore. Southern Grace is known for its display of outdoor water fountains, the largest in the state, as well as an eclectic assortment of home décor and garden pieces. Heading further south, check out MAD Arts (Madison Arts Exchange) with something artsy for everyone – more than 200 local artisans show a variety of one-ofa-kind items here. Shopping for whimsical hand carved garden art? Shed Lady Janine, director of the MAD Arts complex, expanded to a second location, M.A. Outdoors and More, to show large size wooden sculptures and yes, garden and tool sheds too.

fter 13 years working at a sushi restaurant in South Carolina, Trixya Lee pondered her future. A single mother of four, Lee was looking for her next career move as her kids were getting older and ready to “leave the nest.” A close friend knew of a restaurant owner who was planning to retire and looking to sell their business. “I saw the potential and moved to Manassas with my four kids to fulfill our dream of owning a business that I can operate with my family,” said Lee. Almost three years have passed, and Lee is the proud owner of Akasaka Sushi & Japanese Steak House. Located at 10788 Sudley Manor Drive in Manassas, Akasaka specializes in hibachi and sushi cuisine. To Lee, Akasaka is much more than a restaurant. It’s a place where people feel welcomed the moment they walk in the door. “I genuinely like talking to my customers and creating a connection and relationship with them,” shares Lee. “It makes me so happy to see regulars and newcomers visit us. I want to create a community here and make everyone feel welcome.” Akasaka boasts eight hibachi tables and numerous additional tables in the front of the restaurant that can be used for either hibachi or sushi orders. “I was surprised by the increase in the number of sushi customers at our restaurant since our main focus is hibachi,” says Lee. “Since I have previous experience in sushi, I am also capable of being a sushi chef and have put a lot of effort into improving the sushi menu and dishes here.” While the price of ingredients has risen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lee has ensured that the quality and quantity of the restaurant’s food does not change despite any circumstances. Lee’s staff of 18 includes her four children, but she says that all of her employees are like family to her. Customers also note the family feel of the restaurant. “I really like the décor and atmosphere. The service is so friendly and attentive. Everyone seems like they are having a good time,” says Kelsey Myatt, a Fairfax resident, who enjoys dining at Akasaka with friends.

While Lee has updated Akasaka’s sushi menu over the years with innovative ideas, her eldest daughter has enjoyed expanding the establishment’s drink menu. “We are Korean,” said Lee, “and my daughter experimented and researched a lot of the drinks popular there, and most of our new drinks are very fruity and delicious. I’ve been very happy to get positive feedback on them!” Akasaka’s drink menu has more than 20 alcoholic mixed drinks, including the popular Mai Tai and June Bug options. Lee has come a long way since she first moved to the United States and was working at a sushi restaurant. At that time, she didn’t speak much English, so she

with her customers and creating lasting relationships with them. Akasaka employees go out of their way to make customers feel special for their birthday celebrations. This includes a fun song, balloon hat and polaroid photo. Said Lee, “Doing the birthday song event is my favorite thing in the whole entire world! It makes me so happy that someone would come and celebrate their birthday here at the restaurant, and they want us to be part of that celebration! My kids joke that they lose their voices by the end of the night after doing multiple birthday songs, but I find great joy in doing them.” The birthday polaroids line the entryway of Akasaka, showcasing all of the fun times at the restaurant. In Korea, Lee held a “balloon art certification,” which allowed her to create balloon decorations on TV shows and broadcast programs. Fast forward to the present, and Lee still loves creating balloon art and sharing it at Akasaka. During the holidays, Lee makes a big balloon Christmas tree, and decorates with balloon hearts for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. “I enjoy seeing my customers come in and like the decorations and take pictures with my work and just enjoy our restaurant,” she said. “The owner was really sweet and wished me a very happy birthday,” remembers Ben Coyle, a Manassas resident, who recently celebrated his birthday at Akasaka. “I liked the family ambiance. And they left me wanting to come back.” Akasaka is open 7 days a week, with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays being their busiest dinner hours. Said Lee, “My restaurant doesn't open for lunch from Mondays-Fridays, so our hours are relatively short compared to other restaurants that operate all day, but my main goal isn't to make money by selling food. It’s to create relationships with my customers and to be able to spend time with my kids.”

The Summer Music Scene
A
rea music fans rejoice – between warmer weather and wider vaccine distribution, it won’t be long before your favorite venue, winery, or brewery returns to running a full schedule of live music. Most of us are ready to get out this time of year generally, and with the circumstances of 2020 keeping many at home, that restlessness to get back to a typical summer of music, festivals, and events is stronger than ever. Many establishments began booking entertainment in May, including Warrenton’s Denim and Pearls restaurant, which stages live music on Main Street during Friday and Saturday night street closures. Because Fauquier County was not officially considered Northern Virginia during the shutdowns, Warrenton was able to open up by closing streets to traffic, which allowed for outdoor seating along Main Street. “Prior to COVID we had music in our cellar bar area,” said Denim and Pearls owner Jenn Robinson. “Thanks to the Roll Out Warrenton program by the town council and staff, we were able to take our music outside. We are so appreciative that the town thought outside the box and figured out how to make it work long before the rest of the region.” Research showed that residents and visitors loved the changes and participated, helping Main Street businesses to thrive during a rocky time. Jenn, who is also on the board of Experience Old Town Warrenton, with responsibilities including Restaurant Week, books the music with her patrons and also fellow establishments in mind. “Molly’s, Deja Brew, Black Bear and more – we are all located close together so everyone can enjoy the music.” Fountains,

Elizabeth Lawrence Band, Bart Harris (from JunkFood), Bailey Hayes, and the Erick Messick Band are local faves that play the patio. Jean Gehlsen’s Cedar Run Brewery in Nokesville had just begun to hit its stride when the virus hit. “We’ll be two this month, so when the restrictions were put in place last year it caused a slower opening for us. However, we put strict cleaning procedures into place, and we picked up a lot of new customers that were drawn to that,” Jean said. “We enclosed our patio and added heaters, giving people space and the feeling of being outside. We were able to book music throughout the year because of those moves.” Cedar Run features live music Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Regional favorites like Low Water Bridge, Brisk, Front Porch Rockers, Trey Schneider, and Scarlette Awakening are the staples. “We have a mix of some country, bluegrass, rockers like Brisk who play ’90s music, and Front Porch Rockers who play music everyone sings to,” said Jean. “I have a lot of solo acoustic and duets on Saturday and Sunday – with Sunday staying low key so people can chill and get ready for the week.” While there are special events and dates that are totally family-friendly, Cedar Run welcomes only infants and kids ages 15 and up for safety reasons. “We have an award-winning brewer and food trucks all weekend in addition to the music – we are a great destination to kick back and enjoy!” Former engineer and current brewer Matt

Rose and his wife Ashley opened Barking Rose Brewing Company + Farm in October 2019, and while their plans were thwarted for last summer, they are gearing up for the upcoming months now. “We want to do all the stuff we couldn’t do last year, like music on Fridays and Sundays, Wednesday trivia, corn hole tournaments, yoga every other Sunday, and beer dinners in the hops yard with pairings and music,” Matt said. “We plan to build some outside pavilions, and we feature the excellent El Jafe street tacos via their food truck.” Matt sees the regional wineries and breweries not as competitors but as a community. “We all want to succeed; we want you to come out, have a beer or glass of wine, and relax!”

Death Ridge Brewery in Jeffersonton books music most Thursdays and Fridays, with bigger bands on Saturdays and its popular “Brunch and Bluegrass” on Sundays. “Most of our growth with regards to music has been grass roots,” said the brewery’s Zack Turner. “We started by finding a few bands locally, and now promoters and musicians reach out to us daily. With COVID, we kept most of the big bands outside under a tent to spread people out.” Zack shared that it's hard to tell what normal is for Death Ridge since they opened during the pandemic. “But, every time we have live music, we get a great crowd, and it seems to be increasing as things get back to normal. Plus, we can do more outside now that the weather is breaking and getting nicer.”
front, our newest offerings on tap, and all of the cool things we have planned for the summer,” said Dan Barrett. Old Bust Head offered live music throughout the winter and early Spring months indoors with COVID precautions, and as the weather warmed they moved back outside. “We’re excited to have Form of Expression, Maddi Mae with Wine Thief, Annie Stokes, Karen Jonas, The Thistle Brothers, Randy Thompson, and many other excellent local musicians bring their music back to us this summer!” As you head out in search of relaxation, fun, good scenery, food, and of course music, stay informed by following your favorite haunts on social media. Music and food truck schedules are usually shared that way, making it easy to make plans. Almost all regional wineries and breweries feature live music on weekends as well. Check the calendars, head out to support your regional businesses, and enjoy some live music this summer!

Rockwell’s America Explore the iconic artist’s work at a special exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester BY JILL DEVINE
“L
ife as I would like it to be,” is how Norman Rockwell, one of the most prolific and beloved American illustrators of the 20th century, once described his signature images of an idyllic America. Best known for his cover illustrations for Boys Life, the Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines, Rockwell chronicled six decades of American history, gently walking his followers through the Great Depression, two world wars, civil rights milestones, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Thanks to a traveling exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) in Winchester, Rockwell fans have the rare opportunity to view up close many of his original paintings and drawings, along with authentic vintage covers from all 323 of his Saturday Evening Post magazine commissions and a special print and digital display of

his iconic Four Freedoms posters. Norman Rockwell’s America, an exhibition on loan from the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island, and the American Illustrators Gallery in New York, New York, will remain at MSV through August 8, 2021. Rockwell’s instantly recognizable style is highly lifelike and hyper-detailed, and his illustrations have long tugged at our heartstrings, evoking nostalgia for simpler times. His heart-warming scenes portray ordinary people of all ages and walks of life, doing everyday things, like threading a needle, reading the newspaper, shooting marbles, visiting the doctor or peeling potatoes. “Rockwell’s appeal is that he comments on the human condition in a way that we can all relate to,” said Nancy Huth, MSV deputy director of arts and education. “He focused

on light-hearted emotion, friendships and family relationships, and his subjects covered the whole range, from posh international travelers and antique buyers to blue-collar workers or children,” she said. Rockwell’s first cover illustration was for Boys Life, the official publication of Boy Scouts of America, and his freelance relationship with that publication and the BSA covered more than 60 years. On display at MSV is On My Honor, Rockwell’s oversized charcoal-on-paper study for the February 1953 Boys Life cover. Winchester resident and assistant scoutmaster Gerald Crowell said he came to the exhibition specifically to see this piece, which features a Cub Scout, Boy Scout,

and Eagle Scout saluting in front of the Boy Scout Creed. “I like how realistically Rockwell painted the Scout uniforms, right down to the troop numbers and uniform patches,” he said. Also on display are print posters of Rockwell’s Four Freedoms – Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. Rockwell created the Four Freedoms, based on a 1941 speech by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to raise money for the war effort in 1943. Acknowledging that the America Rockwell portrayed in his earlier works was mostly ethnically homogeneous, MSV installed a digital display next to the Four Freedoms. That display, titled For Freedoms, presents an electronic series of photographs of a more inclusive modern America and is on loan from an artist-led organization of the same name that seeks to expand what participation in a democracy looks like and reshape conversations about politics. Also on display are some of Rockwell’s later works reflecting milestones or changes in racial thinking, including 1963 Portrait of Nehru and the 1966 Peace Corps in Ethiopia (Schoolroom).
Rockwell’s “The DoughBoy and His Admirers.” DoughBoy was the nickname for the American infantryman during World War I.

UNIQUE FARMING START-UP EXPANDS IN HERNDON
Malik Langley, right, surprised his younger brother Donn Langley at the Colgan High School graduation. By James A. Lepp/Prince William County schools
A Promise Kept When their dad died last year, Donn Pierre Langley asked his brother to promise to attend his graduation from Colgan High School in place of their father. But as graduation day approached, Malik Langley was in training at the U.S. Army’s Airborne School at Fort Bragg, N.C, and it didn’t look like he would be able to come. Donn walked across the stage to receive his diploma June 5, without his dad or older brother – or so he thought. Malik was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in uniform. The emotional reunion sent a round of applause through the audience. “He wanted me to be here for him because my father wasn't going to be able to,” Malik Langley said in a video posted on the Prince William County Public Schools Facebook page. Malik told school officials he had to fight hard to get the proper permissions to get away for the afternoon to surprise his brother, and he was required to return to Fort Bragg by the next morning. “I just wanted to keep my promise up to him,” he said.
Gov. Ralph Northam recently announced that Beanstalk, an indoor vertical farming startup, will create 29 new jobs and invest more than $2 million to significantly expand production and relocate in Herndon. The company’s new facility will produce a variety of pesticide-free leafy greens and specialty herbs yearround using proprietary hydroponic growing technology, achieving annual sales of over $5 million in the next three years. Beanstalk sells its fresh salad mixes and fresh-cut herbs through national grocery retailers, Northern Virginia farmers markets, and in its on-site retail store.
Hylton plans reopening in fall
The Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas will reopen for in-person performances this fall with a complete lineup of indoor and outdoor programming. The season will be highlighted by Tony Awardwinning performer Leslie Odom Jr., who will make his debut on the Hylton’s main Merchant Hall stage on April 30, 2022, at 8 p.m. Odom played Aaron Burr in the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” “We have been working to get Leslie Odom on this stage for so long, and we are so thrilled that we have succeeded. That’s going to be a special night,” said Rick Davis, executive director of the Hylton. The Hylton has not had any indoor in-person shows since March 2020, and is waiting until August to begin selling tickets for the 2021-22 season so it can “safely accommodate as many audience members as possible” based on guidelines at that time, Davis said.
NEW HOTELS, RESTAURANT COMING TO HAYMARKET? A proposed mixed-use development near Haymarket is one step closer to approval. At a recent meeting, the Prince William County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a rezoning request by Haymarket Town Center LLC to change 8.5 acres at the intersection of Antioch Road and John Marshall Highway from agricultural to office mid-rise. According to a staff report, the developer wants to build two hotels with 100 rooms each, a restaurant at 7,600 square feet and an office building at 3,000 square feet.
